Oper Frankfurt - La Juive
SUMMER/contenders
The altitude of the meridian is rising rapidly. Comfortable wardrobe stimulates men's materialistic desires. The top candidates for shirts and shorts have been decided. Which is the most shining outfit this summer?

RAF Simons
The sophisticated silhouette and minimalist design with no unnecessary elements are the essence of Raf Simons. The deep moss green, epaulets, and flap pockets give the piece a military feel. It comes in a rich selection of six colors. ¥49,350 (Saint Frère)
Ann Demeulemeester
This season, we pursue a balance between tenderness and power. This dress shirt features slightly thick pleats, and the soft cotton used and original dusty pink color give it a gentle look. It is also smooth to wear. Black is also available. ¥68,250 (Orizzonti)
MIHARAYASUHIRO
Made with a variety of luxurious materials such as lining, cupra, twill, and herringbone. This dress shirt, which is like a pair with other items, is a piece that allows you to fully enjoy the (Miharayasuhiro) style. It is also available in white. ¥44,100 (Miharayasuhiro Tokyo)
Arts & Science
The simple texture that makes the most of the natural feel of linen is appealing. The attention to detail is apparent in the tasteful beige coloring achieved through special mud dyeing and the use of antique glass buttons. ¥48,300 (MEN'S SHOP BY ARTS&SCIENCE)

Dries Van Noten
An open-collar shirt with an ethnic Ikat print and embroidery on the chest that resembles a family crest. This piece symbolizes this season's collection, which skillfully combines Japanese and Indian motifs. The silk used in the material creates an elegant atmosphere. ¥37,800 (Dries Van Noten Aoyama store)
Alexander McQueen
This spring/summer collection was inspired by the wardrobe of artists. The evening wear-inspired collection features striking, powerful graphics that resemble abstract paintings reflected in a mirror. ¥88,200 (Gucci Group Japan Alexander McQueen Division)
Undercoverism
This piece features a water landscape transfer print, and the sleeves can be removed from below the elbow, making it a 2-way piece that can be worn as a short-sleeved shirt. It also has outstanding functionality, with a large pocket on the back and a gently curved collar for better breathability. ¥54,600 (UNDERCOVERISM)
N.hoolywood
A bold print of a collage of scraps taken in the automobile city of Detroit, USA. The design strongly reflects the theme of this season's collection. Don't miss the unique design, in which the reverse side of the fabric is used as the outer surface. ¥22,050 (Mister Hollywood)

Comme des Garçons Homme plus
This model reflects the theme of this season, "a jumble," with corduroy on the chest pocket and tartan check on the yoke. It has a nice punk feel. ¥25,200 (Comme des Garcons)
Adam Kimmel
A western shirt with a modern twist, typical of Adam Kimmel, with a low chest yoke and black snap buttons with gold trim. ¥53,550 (Reference price/Diptrics)
Prada
A collarless shirt with a deep neckline and raw edges. The simple design makes it a versatile piece that can be layered with any item. ¥40,950 (Prada Japan Customer Service)

A button-down shirt featuring a crazy pattern unified in pale tones. The tricolor ribbon tape on the placket is an effective accent. ¥18,900 (Tomorrowland)

This piece is covered with flags, symbolizing one of this season's themes, "Summer Sports." The snap button with the brand logo adds an accent. ¥144,900 (Moncler Japan)

Rick Owens
These pants, with details that make them look like they are layered with a skirt, are a key item for this spring and summer. The key point is the sarouel silhouette with an exquisite sense of volume. ¥84,000 (PRED PR)
Bottega Veneta
A floral pattern is printed on top of the paisley pattern. Check out the original textile design that exudes a unique atmosphere. ¥86,100 (Bottega Veneta Japan)
3.1 Phillip Lim
The striking textile is inspired by the paintings of French artist Jean Dubuffet. It creates a clean, straight silhouette. ¥36,750 (3.1 phillip lim Japan)

Joy Ride

Movies watched in 2023
Joy Ride (2023, USA)
Director: Adele Lim
Writers: Cherry Chevapravatdumrong & Teresa Hsiao
Mini-review:
I had been looking forward to this movie for quite a while, and I'm glad to say it met my expectations. It was clear from the trailers that the film was going for a very raunchy, balls to the wall sort of humor, and it definitely delivers. There are quite a few laugh-out-loud sequences, and the writers take things as far as they can in a way that feels positively surprising. Sure, some people might think the script relies too much on shock value, but the movie actually has some meta-commentary about that topic; they're just trying to show that Asian women can carry this type of comedies just as well as white people, or even better. Speaking of the cast, the four leads do an amazing job, although I'd probably pick Stephanie Hsu as the MVP. The story does become more predictable and generic during the last 20 minutes or so, but not enough to make things boring. So, yeah, give Joy Ride a watch if you're in the mood for something raunchy and hardcore.

Joy Ride

Joy Ride [trailer]
Follows four Asian American friends as they bond and discover the truth of what it means to know and love who you are, while they travel through China in search of one of their birth mothers.
It's a riot. Incredibly fast-paced and very funny, with some fresh talent. Not all raunchy jokes hit, but that's as always also depending on personal taste. Even the inevitable "conflict" towards the end felt quite sincere.

Joy Ride (2023)

Summary: Lawyer Audrey Sullivan (Ashley Park) takes advantage of a business trip to China to track down her birth mother, bringing best friend Lolo (Sherry Cola), Lolo's cousin Vanessa "Deadeye" (Sabrina Wu), and (eventually) college friend Kat (Stephanie Hsu) with her.

I like making book post compilations so here I have Asian Fantasy Novel recommendations that are mostly YA. These are in no particular order, arranged by covers more than anything ahaha. Titles and what I liked about it under the cut. I think Asian Fantasy novels are more about world building for me than character depth. Check the character warnings as needed, She Who Became the Sun and Poppy War are probably the most brutal of this list.
Asterisks * for the ones I liked the most. *She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker Chan - LOVE the pun for the title, She really became the Sun and the Son. A reimagining of the battle over the Ming Dynasty with literal mandates of heaven for people who have a chance at the throne. The characters are absolutely brutal. Zhu Chongba is a delightful gremlin.
Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh - Based on the myth of sacrificing young women to the water to please the Sea God to not flood the village. Mina jumps into the river to save someone else from being sacrificed. She needs to wake the Sea God to end the storms.
The Rise of Kyoshi by FC Yee - Based in the world of Avatar the Last Airbender, I think this could be a standalone even if you have no context. Kyoshi is a servant to a fire nation house and finds that she is the Avatar. I liked the mentors she had and the way she took on her signature look.
*A Thousand Steps into Night by Traci Chee - Miuko is an innkeeper's daughter but she gets cursed one night to turn into a demon. She goes on an adventure to try and reverse the curse. I really liked the plot structure and Miuko's internal dialogue.
Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo - Chih is a cleric who is tasked with various cases with their bird, Almost Brilliant. This novel follows flashbacks of maidservant Rabbit indentured to Empress In-yo but ultimately being friends. There are 5 so far that follows Chih's other cases.
The Epic Crush of Genie Lo by FC Yee - Another FC Yee book, I ended up reading a bunch of books from him including Yangchen. I think they are neat! Leans a bit of younger YA but Genie Lo's reveal of who she was on the Monkey King's team was just so good.
Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart - A really solid debut novel where we follow Lin, daughter of the emperor, who is trying to inherit the art of engraving commands into bone shards to make puppets come to life. I don't love all the POVs but Melphi is a delight.
*The Poppy War by RF Kuang - A fantasy novel that is inspired by the atrocities of the Sino-Japanese War and the Opium Wars. RF Kuang's magical battle scenes are really the highlight. I don't think I need to say too much, this made a big splash on the field.
Empress of All Seasons by Emiko Jean - In a world where humans and yokai are divided, Mari has trained all her life to win the competition to be empress despite hiding her yokai nature.
*Bridge of Birds by Barry Hughart - What if someone wrote a fantasy novel that was in the style of transliterated Chinese novels? I think this book is so whimsical and endearing where it follows Number 10 Ox trying to save the village children from their endless slumber by finding a cure.
The Black Tides of Heaven by Neon Yang - Twins separated as they grew into their powers, Mokoya stays with her mother as she gained the gift of prophecy while Akeha is sold off to the monastery as a bargaining chip. Akeha detests what he sees and joins the rebels to take down his mother’s council.
Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim - A debut novel where only men can be Imperial Tailors so Maia dresses as a man to join the competition. She has to travel the world to see three dresses for the emperor’s new bride made out of the sun, moon and star matter.
Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao - I think this book is like popcorn, all style! Its a pretty easy read where the best description is a video game world and palace drama blended up to be this novel.
The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez - There is a mix of second POV as a character is listening to his grandmother talk about this magic theatre and he gets whisked away to see the show they put on. The theatre is in third POV about two warriors who try to free the Moon Goddess and end tyranny in the land.
Dragonfruit by Makiia Lucier - Dragonfruit, sea dragon eggs, are able to grant wishes and Hanalei’s father steals one to save Hanalei instead of giving it to the cursed princess. They are sent to a life of exile but Hanalei eventually returns to make up for her regrets.
Siren Queen by Nghi Vo - What if Hollywood was run by Fae and people make life bargains to be famous? This is probably the only book on this list that focuses on western myths. Bit a drag at some parts but the descriptions are so haunting in some cases!
I will put other books that didn’t make the cut to the graphic and didn’t like as much but maybe you will like more.
Daughter of the Moon Goddess - Sue Lynn Tan
Descendants of the Crane - Joan He
Strike the Zither by Joan He
Fathomfolk by Eliza Chan
Spin of Fate by AA Vora
Song of Silver, Flame like Night by Amelie Wen Zhao
These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong
If you made it here, thanks for reading! I hope you got some new book recs!!
#Feel free to throw more books my way#book recs#book recommendations#asian fantasy#I don’t think I’ll tag any books#I just don’t think they compare well to each other#Clickityquack clacks

Carrying his child.
Finding out you're pregnant with Simon's child.
"I saw that you were perfect, and so I loved you. Then I saw that you were not perfect and I loved you even more." – Angelita Lim
After finishing breakfast, I followed Ghost to his room. He was packing.
"So you're leaving me finally!" I said.
"It isn't like that. I am getting deployed. Will catch up with ya later." He said while folding his clothes and putting them neatly in his suitcase.
I started helping him.
"Soap will teach you how to shoot a sniper while he is here," he said.
"But he cannot fulfill the void, your void, Simon!" I said, my voice tinged with a mix of frustration and sadness.
He paused, looking up at me, his eyes softening for a moment before he resumed packing. "I know, love. But duty calls. You understand that, don't you?"
I nodded, trying to swallow the lump in my throat. "I do. But it doesn't make it any easier."
He straightened up, closing the suitcase and pulling me into his arms. "I'll be back before you know it," he murmured against my hair. "And until then, remember that you're never truly alone. I'm always with you, in some way."
I buried my face in his chest, inhaling his familiar scent, trying to commit it to memory. "Just come back to me," I whispered.
He kissed the top of my head, holding me tightly. "I promise," he said, his voice firm yet gentle. "I'll always come back to you."
Tears started to well up in my eyes. I broke out in sobs. "You know these walls, this huge space I call home, they gnaw at me when I am alone. One day Johnny will have to leave. What would I do without you, my love?" I sobbed.
He cupped my face and wiped my tears with his thumb. "You are my girl and I need my girl to be brave. Do you understand?" he said, his voice steady but full of emotion.
I nodded, trying to pull myself together, feeling the warmth of his touch anchoring me. "I'll try, Simon. For you."
"That's all I ask," he whispered, pressing a gentle kiss to my forehead. "Just hold on. I'll be back before you know it."
He took his sniper case and opened it on the bed, removing the sniper and presenting it to me. "Here, Nora. Take care of it. It's yours now."
I took it from his hands, my fingers trembling as I felt the weight of it. "I have fought wars with it, and it's very close to my heart. That's why I'm giving it to you. Use it on your enemies, just in case. Johnny will teach you," he said, his voice steady yet filled with emotion.
I looked at him, tears blurring my vision. His presence, his strength, everything about him was etched into this weapon. My trembling hands gripped the rifle, feeling its cold metal against my skin.
He rolled his balaclava up to his forehead, revealing his face. His lips touched mine in a gentle kiss, filled with love and longing. I didn't want him to pull away, wishing time would stay still, keeping us in this moment forever. But reality was relentless, and he eventually drew back, leaving me with the rifle and the memory of his touch.
"Come, take my hand. The helicopter's waitin'," he said, taking my hand into his.
We climbed the stairs to my roof where Captain Price, Soap, and Gaz were already standing.
"We're leaving now, kid. We had a very good time here," Captain Price said.
"Captain Price! After my father's death, you've been like a father to me. I'm grateful you came here and spent time with me." I hugged him tightly.
Gaz came over and hugged me too. "Thanks, Nora, for all of that," he said.
"Mention not, Gaz," I replied.
Simon still held my hand, a comforting presence by my side.
"See ya again, LT!" Soap said, punching Simon's chest playfully.
Simon stood with me as they all boarded the helicopter. The blades started to move, creating a deafening roar.
"See you again, sweetheart," Simon said, turning to go, but I grabbed his hand and hugged him fiercely.
"I love you, Simon," I whispered.
"I love you too, Nora," he whispered back.
Captain Price couldn't hear our conversation, but I could see the suspicion in his eyes, his doubts about us beginning to take form.
I touched my lips with my fingers and then pressed my fingers against his masked lips, not caring about what Captain Price might think. Simon pointed his fingers towards his eyes and then to mine, gesturing that he would be coming back for me.
With that, he stepped inside the helicopter. Johnny and I stood there, watching as the helicopter ascended and flew away. I stood there long after it had disappeared into the sky, feeling the emptiness settle in.
Tears were flowing from my eyes, and Johnny noticed.
"It's awright, Nora. He'll be back when he's free. Until then, I'm here. Ye won't be bored, I promise." He chuckled.
"Thanks, Johnny," I said, climbing down the stairs with him following after me.
"Make yourself at home, Johnny," I said as I entered Simon's room and closed the door. His room felt empty without him.
I sat on the bed holding the sniper he gave me, touching it and thinking about how he had used it. It was a piece of him which he gave me. I noticed his grey hoodie lying on the bed. He left it there.
I held it close, taking in his scent, the musky cologne. It smelled of him. I laid on the bed holding it close, my face toward the balcony door where rays of sunlight entered the room. The bed, the sheets, everything smelled of him, and I wanted to envelop myself in his vibes.
I closed my eyes and drifted to sleep again with him on my mind.
It was almost lunchtime when I woke up.
I stood and opened the door. The faint voice of laughing grew nearer as I descended the stairs. There I saw Soap standing in the living room, talking to the chef and laughing at his own silly jokes.
"What's going on here?" I asked.
"Ach, nothin'. I was just tellin' her some jokes that I tell LT," Soap replied.
"Aye, Nora! Ye play games? Uno, Ludo, Monopoly?" he asked.
"Only Ludo, but nobody is here to play with me."
"Ye go tae the gym?" he asked.
"Yes, I have my own gym here. I haven't worked out in a while as Simon was here."
"Sure LT would have used it. He loves tae work out," he said.
"No, he didn't either," I replied.
"I'll show you the gym after lunch but let's eat something first," I said and went inside the kitchen to help the chef.
"Hey Johnny! Tell me anything about Ghost," I asked.
"Aye, lass! Ghost? Ah, he's a fine listener, ye ken? No one for idle chatter, but when he does speak, it's worth listenin' to. And when it comes to crackin' jokes, he's a right laugh, especially among us," Johnny replied in his Scottish brogue.
"Well! Simon said you'll show me how to shoot a sniper," I said.
"Aye! I'll teach ye," Johnny confirmed.
As the day progressed, I found myself immersed in conversation with Johnny. He was quite the charmer, with an infectious smile that lit up the room. He had a great sense of humor and was incredibly friendly.
"Aye lass! Let's play a game. Whit were ye sayin' before, which game ye play?" Johnny asked.
"Ludo," I said.
"Let's play Ludo then," he said.
"Sorry Johnny! I have to attend an online meeting. You can watch TV if you are getting bored." I said.
"Aye, lass, which meeting are ye off to?" Johnny inquired.
"It's my father's company, a pharma business. I'm running it now. I'll be joining the office from tomorrow, so you'll be on your own," I explained.
"I'll come wi' ye. Would love to see yer company," he offered.
"You sure? You won't get bored?" I asked.
"Nah, it's fine. I'm here tae keep ye safe," he replied confidently.
A month later,
I was sitting in the meeting room of my company. It was almost time to leave. Johnny did not accompany me today.
As I stood up, my head spinning, I felt a wave of dizziness wash over me. The room seemed to blur, and I struggled to maintain my balance. I reached out to steady myself, grasping the edge of the table as I took a deep breath, trying to calm my racing heart.
"Are you okay, Nora?" my colleague asked, concern evident in their voice.
I nodded weakly, forcing a smile. "I'm fine, just feeling a bit lightheaded. I think I need some fresh air."
With shaky steps, I made my way out of the meeting room and into the corridor. Leaning against the wall, I closed my eyes, trying to steady my breathing. The world spun around me, and I felt a sense of unease settle in the pit of my stomach.
I sat in my car, the wave of dizziness and nausea was overwhelming.
As I arrived at my mansion, exhaustion weighed heavily upon me. Johnny was there, waiting for me. But as I entered, a sudden wave of dizziness washed over me, and before I could react, darkness enveloped my vision, and I fell unconscious.
When I woke, Johnny was kneeling beside me, concern etched on his face. He had caught me before I hit the ground, his strong arms supporting me.
"Are you alright, lass?" he asked, his voice filled with worry.
I groaned softly, my head throbbing with pain. "I... I don't know. I felt dizzy and then... everything went black."
Johnny helped me sit up, his steady presence a reassuring anchor in the midst of my confusion. "We need to get you checked out, Nora. This ain't normal."
I nodded weakly, grateful for his concern. With Johnny's support, I managed to stand, albeit unsteadily. Together, we made our way to the nearest couch, where I sank down, feeling utterly drained.
As Johnny fetched a glass of water, I couldn't shake the feeling of unease that lingered within me. Something was wrong, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. All I knew was that I needed answers, and fast.
"I think I should call my doctor," I muttered, dialing his number.
Dr. William arrived within half an hour. "How are you, young woman? Aren't you taking care of yourself?" he asked.
"I don't know what's happening. I think it might be iron deficiency," I replied.
"Where's your friend, Nora?" he asked.
"You mean Simon?" I asked back.
"Yes," he replied.
"He's in the army, so he had to go back," I explained.
"And who is this gentleman?" Dr. William pointed towards Soap.
"He's my friend. Like a little brother," I said.
"Hmm. Low blood pressure, low sugar... What are you doing, kid?" he huffed.
"I'm taking a blood sample. We'll run some tests and I'll send you the reports ASAP," Dr. William said.
Dr. William took my sample and left.
"You should tell LT about this," Soap said, concerned.
"Tell what? It's just normal, nothing unexpected," I replied. "I should go rest." I headed to my room.
Sitting on the bed, another wave of nausea hit me. I rushed to the bathroom to vomit.
"I think I caught a stomach bug," I messaged Simon.
After messaging Simon, I rinsed my mouth and returned to my room, feeling utterly exhausted. I laid down on the bed, trying to ignore the lingering nausea. My phone buzzed with a reply from Simon.
"Are ya alright, love? Do ya need me to come back?" Simon's concern was evident even through the text.
"No, I'll be fine. Just need some rest," I typed back, though I wished he could be here with me.
Johnny knocked gently on my door. "Nora, you okay in there?"
"Yeah, Johnny. Just feeling a bit off," I said, my voice weak.
"Need anythin'? Some water, tea, maybe?" he offered.
"Water would be nice, thanks," I replied, managing a small smile.
Johnny returned quickly with a glass of water. "Here ya go. Rest up, alright?"
"Thanks, Johnny," I said, taking a sip.
As I settled back into bed, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was seriously wrong. The nausea, the dizziness, the fatigue—it all felt too much to be just a stomach bug. But for now, all I could do was wait for Dr. William's call with the test results.
Hours passed, and I drifted in and out of a restless sleep. Finally, my phone rang. It was Dr. William.
"Nora, I got your results. Can you talk?"
"Yes, Dr. William, please tell me," I said, my heart pounding.
"Your iron levels are indeed low, and you have low blood pressure and low blood sugar, which explains your dizziness and nausea. However, there's something else. Have you missed your period recently?"
My breath caught in my throat. "Yes, I have. What does that mean?"
"Nora, I think you might be pregnant. We'll need to do a confirmation test, but the symptoms and your blood work suggest it."
Pregnant? The word echoed in my mind. I thanked Dr. William and ended the call, feeling a mix of shock, joy, and fear. How would I tell Simon? What would this mean for us?
I decided not to share this with Johnny yet. It felt too personal, too raw to discuss with anyone before Simon knew. I needed time to process this on my own.
Lost in thought, I barely noticed when Johnny knocked on my door again. "Nora? Ya look like you've seen a ghost. Everythin' alright?"
"Just tired, Johnny. Thanks for the water," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
"Johnny, I've got to go see Simon," I told him as I hurriedly threw some clothes into my suitcase.
"Everythin' alright, Nora?" Johnny asked, concern etched on his face.
"Yeah, just...something important came up. I need to talk to him face-to-face," I said, avoiding eye contact.
"Alright, if ye need anythin', let me know," Johnny replied, his worry evident but respectful of my need for privacy.
I had told Johnny not to inform Simon that we were coming to see him. Dr. William had emailed me the test report, and I had it ready to show Simon. When the helicopter landed on the base, Johnny stepped out first, offering me a hand to help me down.
I wore simple white joggers, a long figure-hugging jersey dress, and a denim jacket. As I stepped onto the base, I could feel all eyes on me. Johnny grabbed my suitcase and led the way inside the building. The stares followed me as I walked, my heart pounding with anticipation.
Johnny carried my suitcase inside while I continued my search for Simon. I found him in the briefing room with Captain Price and Gaz, all of them engrossed in a discussion over a map. Simon was leaning on the desk, his focus on the map. I stood in the doorway, crossing my arms over my chest, waiting for him to notice me.
Suddenly, his eyes lifted and met mine. A look of surprise and concern flashed across his face.
"Lieutenant Simon Riley," I said, my voice steady but carrying the weight of the news I was about to share. "We need to talk."
He straightened up, his expression shifting to one of immediate seriousness. "Nora? What are ya doin' here?"
Captain Price and Gaz exchanged curious glances but remained silent. Simon quickly walked over to me, concern evident in his eyes. "Let's go somewhere private," he said softly.
We walked out of the room and found a quiet spot outside. Simon turned to me, his eyes searching mine. "What's goin' on, love?"
I took a deep breath and handed him the printed email from Dr. William. "Simon, I'm pregnant," I said, my voice trembling slightly.
He looked down at the paper, then back up at me, his eyes wide with shock. "Pregnant?" he repeated, as if needing to hear it again to believe it.
I nodded. "I wanted to tell you in person. This is big, Simon. It changes everything."
He stood there for a moment, processing the news. Then, he pulled me into his arms, holding me tightly. "We'll get through this, Nora. Together. I'm here for ya, no matter what."
Tears of relief and joy welled up in my eyes as I held onto him. "I was so scared, Simon. But hearing you say that...it makes everything better."
He kissed the top of my head, his voice full of love and determination. "We'll figure it out, love. One step at a time. Now, let's get you settled and take care of ya and our little one."

What Simon can teach us about boundaries!
Been seeing a lot of Simon hate again lately (mostly on other apps but i’m sure its here too) and it's getting pretty frustrating and honestly a little bit troubling that people think so little of Simon and his needs.
Simon hate feels like some weird connection to the patriarchy/heteronormativity where some people have just decided that it is okay for one person's needs to be ignored in a relationship in order to satisfy the other. Lisa seemed to intentionally try and create a dynamic in their relationship where they see each other as equals. They may struggle to see each others perspectives at times but that is true for literally ANY RELATIONSHIP where two people come together from different walks of life. Both their needs matter and their journey in the relationship is to figure out how to honor the other persons needs while honoring themselves or see if that is even possible.
Sooo I wanted to share some lessons about boundaries that people could learn through Simon instead of talking sh!t about him !!!

1. Boundaries are about what we want and need in a relationship. Sometimes people want different things and thats ok!
People love to say that Simon forced Wilhelm to come out. I even saw someone say that Simon was asking Wilhelm to "give up his family and the throne". No where does Simon ask him to do any of those things. Notice how Simon says "I don't want to be anyones secret"? This is not just about Wille. This is a boundary that he has for himself and the types of relationships that he wants to have. Everyone is allowed to have expectations or want a certain type of relationship. Saying you don’t want to be in a secret relationship is quite a reasonable request. It is also quite reasonable to say that you don't want to be in a public relationship. Sometimes in relationships, what two people need is incompatible at the time which is why it made sense for them to end things. That is the point- for both people to say what they need to feel comfortable and sometimes other people cannot meet your needs- you have to decide if that is a dealbreaker and for Simon at the time it was.
2. Boundaries ≠ manipulation
He tells Wilhelm he take as much time as he needs but you have to do it alone. That is a boundary it is NOT manipulation. He does not try to control Wilhelm or tell Wilhelm what to do. Saying a relationship wont work for you unless certain needs are met or that you dont want to do tons of emotional labor for another person is not manipulation. He is saying I am not okay with being a secret, I am not okay with having my trust broken, i’m not okay with being in a relationship where you say one thing and do another (Wilhelm made a promise he could not keep and even he has owned up to that to Nils). Simon is not saying YOU HAVE TO COME OUT RIGHT NOW OR ELSE. He is not playing mind games or trying to get Wilhelm to change his mind in order to be with him. He is willing to walk away even tho his heart is breaking because he knows it is not possible at that point for Wille and him to get on the same page.
Boundaries have become part of social media language lately thanks to instagram therapists and the like but a lot of people have misconstrued the meaning. Some people call something a boundary when they are actually being controlling. However the purpose of a boundary is about what you yourself are comfortable with, not what other people can/cannot do. Ex: “i am okay with holding hands in public but otherwise I don’t feel comfortable with PDA” (healthy boundary). Vs “you can’t have guy friends because I get jealous” (unhealthy boundary). Boundaries are healthy and necessary for a relationship to be healthy- they are not the same as manipulation or trying to control someone else.
3. What is okay for you does not have to be okay for someone else. Everyone’s boundaries are different because we are all different people with different traumas, needs, experiences, relationships, and limits. I have seen people compare the Wilmon to Narlie where Charlie is okay with Nick wanting to keep things “secret”. Besides the fact that this is a completely different relationship and context, the fun thing about boundaries is that what is okay for you does not have to be okay for someone else! Just because you would have been willing to be Wilhelm’s secret if he asked does not mean that Simon has to. Just because Charlie was willing to to do that for Nick does not mean that Simon has to. Not to mention !!! Nick also acknowledged that is not fair to Charlie and outside of not telling people they had a very loving smooth sailing relationship - people expect Simon to be like Charlie without acknowledging that Wilhelm is not giving the level of trust and security that Nick is. If you want to go there, I'm sure if Wille was acting like Nick being consistent not saying "i'm not like that", "delete my number" etc (regardless of the reason) then maybe Simon would have been more okay with it. This is not Wille hate bc i get it, but sometimes in empathizing with Wille people forget that Simon is a whole human with wants and needs. Simon needs to protect himself and his heart. We all do. Relationships should not require you to subject yourself to pain for someone else. It is healthy to have boundaries and know your needs and what you deserve. And at that point in time Wille could not give him that. Most people watching were quite proud of Simon for that so idk how the narrative got turned to him being selfish.
4. Boundaries can change
It is normal to reassess your boundaries, that does not make them any less valid. Clearly for Simon, once Wilhelm proved his trust more and and Simon reevaluated what he wanted, he decided that he was willing to be a secret if that meant having each other. If he never decided that, it still would have been totally valid. Also noting, there was no compromise/meet in the middle there in Simon deciding that he was willing to be a secret for Wille. It's just funny that Simon is getting the flack for not wanting to "compromise" or meet in the middle when in the end, Simon was willing to do exactly what Wille wanted and he gets ZERO credit from some people for that. Luckily Wilhelm sees what a sacrifice this is for Simon and does not leave Simon to sacrifice alone.
4. Boundaries protect the relationship, build trust and help relationships grow
If Simon had never stood his ground both in s1e6 and throughout s2 Wille would have likely continued the way he was going bc it was comfortable for him and he was understandably scared. They probably would have gotten in even more arguments and honestly i do not think Wille would have been forced to mature and consider Simons feelings in the way he eventually did. I know people resist Edvin calling Wille selfish but Simon has to constantly keep telling Wille “what about me? What about my family? Do you see how hard this is for me?” For some reason viewers are interpreting that as selfish ?? In a relationship you really should not have to be constantly reminding someone to consider you and your feelings.
Simon setting boundaries and saying what he wanted only made their relationship stronger even tho they had to take some time apart. Protecting yourself and wanting a healthy balanced relationship where your needs are considered as much as the other person’s is not selfish. And anyone who tells you that it is does not have your best intentions at heart. Simon is not saying his needs are MORE important than Wille’s he is saying that his needs matter TOO and are EQUALLY IMPORTANT to Wille’s. Which was the journey he needed to go on (as stated by his sister) and the journey that Wille needed to go on as well in order to create a healthy dynamic together.
Setting boundaries is hard but worth it in the end!!!
So yeah! I hope you all set some boundaries today or use this info to argue with simon antis 💖
