Summary: Teenager Gretchen (Hunter Schafer) moves to an Alpine hotel with her father (Marton Csokas) and his family. She notices weird occurrences and that there's something off about her father's boss, Herr Koenig (Dan Stevens).

A coming-of-age A Cure For Wellness with great turns from both Schafer and Stevens. Gorgeous scenery and bonkers finale, too.

I dag var der fest (igen), og vi holdt forfest i køkkenet, hvilket var rart, for jeg har været hunderæd for at gå derud, mens jeg ligner lort, af risiko for at møde bare et af de 11 mennesker, jeg bor på gang med - særligt fordi jeg bor på gang med to helt absurd smukke schweiziske mænd. Jeg fik snakket meget med en af dem i dag, ham der ligner en model, jeg lærte, at han er i et åbent forhold, og at han ligesom jeg plejer at sidde og hyggedrikke og bare snakke på barer derhjemme, og det er uvant for os begge at danse så meget, som vi gør her. Jeg tror, vi kunne blive gode venner, han er virkelig sød, og han er lidt menneskeliggjort nu, hvor mit afstandscrush er forsvundet.

Derudover var det bare en rigtigt god aften som alle de andre. Vi var fire, der gik hjem sammen - “modellen”, en pige, jeg har snakket med før, og så en fyr, jeg aldrig havde mødt før, som jeg endte med at snakke med hele vejen hjem. Der er så mange mennesker at møde hele tiden. Der er så meget frihed i at danse med forholdsvist fremmede mennesker.

Intet drama er sket endnu! Kun gode dage. Jeg er så glad. Jeg har ikke engang tømmermændsangst her, uanset hvor træt jeg er. Jeg mærker knap noget til min angst overhovedet indtil videre. Jeg er ør i hovedet af indtryk og glæde. Jeg øver mig i at leve i nuet

Well, there it is in all its wackadoodle glory: Hong's only scene in this hard to find '05 comedy (I had to rent it on Amazon for $4.25 lol). In and out (and stoned out of his mind) in under 90 seconds. American Fusion had to crawl so that Crazy Rich Asians could walk? No can't print that…

Moving on.

I actually was mildly into this one for the first act or so. The humor was pretty broad and weird (as you can see from the above "sea otter nipples" riff + look at that movie poster!). But it descended into sappy schlock unfortunately.

Some highlights include:

An early Randall Park appearance as the son of the lead actress who wishes he was black (he's legit funny doing AAVE)

All the family's interactions with the black doctor (played by character actor de jour Tom Wright), especially when they bring him gifts which include a basketball and Popeye's chicken. (The commentary is obvious but effective: minorities stereotype other minorities just as often)

Fabio cameo

Weirdly, character actor Joel McKinnon Miller had a fairly significant scene as a plumber but he is not listed anywhere in the IMDB cast? Hmm.

And the great Pat Morita, who looks like this for some reason…

It was competent and fairly funny for a little bit... I swear! Oh well.

Greatly mismarketed piss-take of Gone Girl and similar thrillers with gorgeous setting and grimy undercurrent. Kendrick and Lively electric together.

my most recent read — jade war by fonda lee

i've been really struggling with fantasy this past year (i blame wheel of time for putting me into a slump😵‍💫), but i finally feel my sff mood returning and picking up jade war was the perfect re-entry into the genre.

i surprisingly LOVED this book. the characters are absolute perfection, the slow and intricate politics worked so well for me, and this series is so propelling. there's never a dull moment. everyone always pitches this series as 'the godfather but asian and fantasy', and i absolutely agree. beyond excited to continue!!
