Joy Ride (2023) by Adele Lim
This is so fun. Genuinely love that we have a raunchy roadtrip comedy for queer millennials now. And this cast has such good chemistry...I feel like this should be the movie of the summer.

I really appreciate that there was a character in Joy Ride who did not want to have sex and did not have sex. That character was supportive of their friends who wanted to have sex and did but it's nice that even in a raunchy comedy there was someone who could be interpreted as asexual and they weren't shamed for that or, god forbid "cured"

Howdy y'all.
I went to see Joy Ride today and I wanted to tell y'all how I felt about it.
I...LOVED IT!!
It made me laugh, it made me cry. It's a beautiful discussion about friendship. Collectivist vs individualistic cultures. And Sex vs romance. It was awesome!
It's unapologetically raunchy, it subverts tropes. The sex is weird and great. It has a bisexual having weird, fun sex. A super fun, somewhat kinky threesome, an assisted masturbation scene and a dance off.
All of which were also well done and satisfying. There's cultural celebration and friends coming through when you need them most.
Most importantly this movie is about bonding with "your" weirdos. That group of people that just get you, that see you. And they may not always agree with you but they'll help you just the same when you're down.
But also you should fuck that hot guy or take that adventure if you have the opportunity cause yes!
Okay, that's if for now!! Go see Joyride! It's great! I'm not to be too spoilery!

The following description is the R rating (equivalent of 18+ and similar ratings) for Joy Ride (now playing in theaters), and its reasons for its R rating, as worded by the MPAA.
Rated R for strong and crude sexual content, language throughout, drug content and brief graphic nudity.
All of these are things we have determined are unsuitable for unsupervised children, so the ratings boards in various countries know to take appropriate measures to make sure the wrong audience doesn’t see this movie.
None of these things are likely to trigger any physical health issues that moviegoers have. Nobody is going to be hospitalized for hearing the F word, any sex-related humor, on-screen drug use, or seeing someone’s genitals in plain view.
Despite the very nature of these things being the reasons behind Joy Ride’s R rating, none of these things are as dangerous as strobe lights. This movie has two moments of very sudden and severe strobe effects, making this film objectively dangerous, far more than any potential “moral” danger it may present.
Nobody is going to complain about this movie being less accessible to children because we agree that children shouldn’t see certain things without parental guidance, and that certain movies are only made for adults. The rating system provides the warning about the adult content beforehand. There are no warnings in any movie rating system about a hazard that is objectively more dangerous than the ones listed above.
As far as we can tell, Movie Health Community is the only place on the internet that is currently warning moviegoers about the strobe light risks in Joy Ride. We are happy to do our part in helping, but this needs to be a lot more of a team effort. We need to push not only for more new movies to be made with no strobe effects, but to give visible and clear warnings when strobe effects are present.

Lionsgate said Monday that its upcoming comedy marking the feature directorial debut of Crazy Rich Asians scribe Adele Lim will be called Joy Ride. The studio also unveiled the first still from the film, which you can view below.
The film due for release June 23 stars Ashley Park (Emily in Paris), Sherry Cola (Good Trouble), Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and Sabrina Wu as unlikely friends who embark on a once-in-a-lifetime international adventure. When Audrey’s (Park) business trip to Asia goes sideways, she enlists the aid of Lolo (Cola), her irreverent, childhood best friend who also happens to be a hot mess; Kat (Hsu), her college friend-turned-Chinese soap star; and Deadeye (Wu), Lolo’s eccentric cousin. Their no-holds-barred, epic experience becomes a journey of bonding, friendship, belonging and wild debauchery that reveals the universal truth of what it means to know and love who you are.
The film from Point Grey and Red Mysterious Hippo also stars Ronny Chieng (Crazy Rich Asians), Desmond Chiam (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), Alexander Hodge (Insecure) and Chris Pang (Crazy Rich Asians). The script by Cherry Chevapravatdumrong & Teresa Hsiao was based on a story by Chevapravatdumrong, Hsiao and Lim.
