A little Silentplanet concert blog entry

Watched Silentplanet yesterday live. It was a lot of fun. I was hoping for a few more older songs, but understandably they focused on the material of their two recent albums. And those songs were hitting hard. I don’t know how they mixed this, but the unisono riffs created such a thick wall of sound. Incredible.

Been a while since I last visited a metal concert and I was positively surprised to see how many girls and also queer folk were present. (I think I met another trans-girl while ordering some bitterballen. Not 100% sure, because I didn’t ask about that.) Seems the scene went opened up and started moving away from the boys-club mentality. Also noone threw their drinks around or tackled into you. It felt overall more safe. Still very energetic—mind you. I loved seeing some of the girls dance and make tough-girl faces. It was really cool. I also felt I could let loose a bit more than I was able to on previous concerts. Though I still avoided the pit. Whenever that opened up near me I got a bit scared xD

The supporting bands were fun as well. I missed the first one though. The friend I went with, said they brought such a positive and playful energy. Can’t be helped. I had a melted cheese sandwich during that time at home—which was also nice.

I stressed myself so much before that concert because I was planing to make that design I did for «visible unseen» into a t-shirt. In the end I send it to a printing service, to let them handle it. It came out pretty well. So my plan (almost four months in the making) to wear this as a shirt to the concert came to fruition.

I took my camera with me, but I wasn’t taking any serious pictures. I guess it’s still fine. Concert lights are always nice and it is also a reminder of me being there.

At the end of the concert Garret took time to speak to everyone who wanted to. I think there was a crowd of 50–100 people waiting in line. I waited kinda till the end to line up, so I was second to last. I find it incredible how he is able to interact with so many people in such a kind and genuine feeling way. Even at the end of that meeting he was full of energy and was hugging everyone who lined up and took time to lead a conversation based on what people wanted to talk about. I told him what «visible unseen» meant to me. My friend said I should show him the shirt I made (it was a back print—so, not visible from the front) and he was really fascinated to see a fan-made graphic design shirt. I don’t have a picture of the shirt yet. But I posted the design here a while ago, if you’re interested.

Yeh. Positive experience and really glad I went.

I actually managed to get this motiv printed, wear it to a Silentplanet concert and showed it to Garret—who wrote these amazing lyrics.

I’m a bit proud of myself. Like, I actually have the physical thing now. And I finished it in time. And had the courage to wear it outside (not that the design is terrible, just … you know … doing the thing, instead of just dreaming about it).

Eventhough I made these typefaces, seeing them printed I was like: “Did the exporting go right? Maybe it switched to the default font? It looks so different. But, at second glance … No these are actually the letters I made. They look so proper. I still need to get used to this.”

I should have just printed the front motive as well. It looks so plain in the front …

I have a history with christian belief and after de-constructing it I still holds merrit for me. Something that stuck with me is the idea of a homecoming. That after all the struggles there will be a “welcome home” that acknowledges these pains—in part already with friends in the here and now, and hopefully in a resolving way also in the hereafter.

And two media that express this feeling for me are Silent Planets “The visible Unseen” and the ending of Gunbusters.

Both bring me to tears every time. The former talks about the solidarity—especially queer people—can find amongst each other. The latter about the uncertainty of there being anyone left that shows you solidarity. As a side-note: It is astounding that this little series manages so much emotional punch, considering the breadth of blatant fan-service present in the movie (even seconds before this final scene).

I’m often not that good with poster design (more of an editorial design girl), so I don’t know if this is any good. But I thought it could be a neat t-shirt idea. What do you think?
