Cato was my cat. That's the long and short of it.

From the first night I had him when he curled up against my neck to fall asleep with me, to his final night when he curled up on my chest to try and comfort me, there is not a single day I've been home that I haven't had my kitten chow with me. He was my tiny shadow, always trotting along after me or singing at me from around the house with that long Siamese wail or bringing me scores of socks he hid god knows where (although once he brought me an entire umbrella instead, which he was understandably proud of). He was by my pillow every night cuddled up against my arm, and we fit together like two puzzle pieces, like that little crook in my arm was designed for him, for his exact shape and size. He was with me through my health issues, through high school and college, through moving states, through covid, through tears, through the loss of other pets. He was there as I really learned to write, and there is not a single chapter of TRT that was written without his presence for at least a section of it even if it meant I had to stop editing or writing for a bit and just stare at the words instead because he wanted to be held NOW. And he even managed to hold off the cancer just long enough to walk with me through mom's hospital stay and her return home. I was his person, and he was my soul cat, a piece of me.

I was so torn last night. He was clearly in pain, dehydrated, wobbly, confused and restless, and couldn't get to the litter box. It had been really clear this week the moment was coming, that the cancer was going to take him soon. I'd had this big plan, to have it all happen at home in peace. He hated the vet, hated the stress, but it happened so fast, and I just... knew he couldn't wait for the vet's office to open so she could come here. He'd chosen his time and it was now.

I held him at the emergency vet when they gave him the sedative. I managed to choke out that silly singing tone that always made him happy, as I called him every last nickname he knew: my Cato-wato kitten chow, my Cato kins, my little Mr. meow meow, my sweet happy baby kitty. I made sure all he could see with those big beautiful blue eyes of his was me, as I petted his soft little ears and scratched his neck just the way he liked. And he actually managed to purr for me. He purred as he slipped away and the lights went out, and it was the last sound I ever got to hear from him.

I already miss you so, so much, my sweet old kitty, my Cato kitten chow. I'm sorry it couldn't be at home. But thank you for purring for me. Thank you for spending your journey with me. Thank you for the love you gave me. Thank you for the big meows and the headbonks and perching on my shoulder to interrupt with a breaking news story of Meow Meow. Thank you for the stealing of hundreds of my socks over 16 years and the way you always wanted to sit on me regardless of convenience or your own comfort. Thank you for letting me scoop you up for head smoochies, guarding me from nightmares, and solemnly supervising over 150 chapters of TRT. My soul cat, my baby kitty, my lovebug. I will always love and miss you. And one day I'll see you again.

Blue has the slender (Oriental shorthair/Siamese inspired) body type of her father. She looks a LOT like Stormtail, but she's blue instead of brown.

During Tigerclaw's attack, he clawed her chest, leaving her a scar over her leader mark, I like the symbolism, since this can represent her subsequent loss of faith in the Stars.

She was under extreme stress and trauma during the time she gave up her kits, and at the end of her life she was suffering from an extreme mental break that probably involved some dementia. This doesn't excuse her actions, but I love her character for how flawed and complex she is!

btw its kinda weird to have an uncommon breed of a common kintype. you search for "catkin" tag and it full of cats but none of them are close to your longmuzzled longlegged type("oriental cat kin/therian" tag is usually not used). theres no way you find a toy of your type, the best they have is some siamese cats(usually with too short face and too chunky legs). and sometimes its a color. i didnt think that black&white cats are unpopular until i searched for something close to me. and all the cat colors i sea are usually tabby, white or black. unccommon animal kintype is searching for it and find nothing, and uncommon breed kintype is searching for it and find a lot of things and none of them are for you.

the same is for my dogkin btw. gazehounds are nothing like your usual shepherds, hounds or terriers at all. and gazehounds are usually forgotten or ignored and presented only as a jokes about weird borzoi pics.

“Today, we gather to mourn the losses of Sunfluff and Thornsnatch,” Everstar meowed, looking out at the solemn Clan before him. “Thornsnatch gave his life in an effort to feed our Clan, and Sunfluff gave hers in an effort to save him. Tonight, their spirits are sent to StarClan, as loving parents, loyal warriors… and wonderful friends. We thank Mistscar and Muddyspots for retrieving their bodies from the river for burial. We thank Puddlefire, Robintail and Dandelionpaw for helping to carry them home one last time. And we thank Velvetfur for taking on the task of raising Rosekit. Tonight, as we hold vigil for these two wonderful souls, would anyone like to share memories of them?”

“I would,” Muddyspots said as he stood, prompting Everstar to nod as he came forward.

“I knew Sunfluff better than anyone. She was the best sister any cat coulda ever had… and when she told me she liked Thornsnatch, I’ll admit, I was skeptical. I wondered how any cat coulda captured her heart so easily. But over the moons I got to know him better than I had almost any other clanmate. I understood. He was witty while she took a bit to think. Where she was strong, he was fast. They balanced each other out, and when they were together, nothing could stop them… So it’s hard to believe a bit of water did just that. But they still left someone here with us, four someones, in fact. Puddlefire, Robintail, Dandelionpaw, Rosekit, I promise I will do everything in my power to help keep y’all safe. I don’t care that two of ya are warriors, because you’re still my kin, and I am still going to help ya. I love all of ya, and I’m going to care for you the same way they did.”

“Uncle Muddyspots…” Puddlefire started, before trailing off, his mismatched eyes welling with tears.

“Thank you,” Robintail finished his thought, giving her brother a soft, comforting nuzzle.

“Uncle Muddyspots, I’m scared…” Rosekit mewed as she padded up to the deputy. “What if Velvetfur isn’t nice to me because I’m not her kit?”

“Aw, Rosekit, it'll be ok. Velvetfur chose to take care of ya for a reason, didn’t she?” He locked eyes with the fluffy warrior, who averted her gaze for just a moment to look at her own son, who was consoling Dandelionpaw alongside Riverpaw.

Russetpaw would want this, she thought as she nodded. 

Rosekit looked back at Velvetfur, before her gaze fell on her mother and father.

“Can I stay outside tonight, and say goodbye to Mama and Papa with you?” she asked, looking back up at the mottled brown tom, who shook his head gently.

“I’d say yes if you were a little older, Rosekit, but you need to sleep properly. You’re too young to attend a vigil…”

“I’m three moons old! I’m old enough!” she argued, stomping her paw.

“No, you’re not. In fact, you, Lilykit, Skullkit and Pumpkinkit should all be asleep. Lavenderclaw, Velvetfur, could you please take these four to the nursery?”

Lavenderclaw nodded as she stood, gently herding Skullkit and Pumpkinkit away, as Velvetfur stepped forward.

“Come on, kits, it’s time to sleep. All that’s left is the vigil, and both of you are too young for that…” she told them softly.

“Okay, Velvetfur�� Goodnight, Papa… goodbye Uncle Thornsnatch and Auntie Sunfluff…” Lilykit mewed, before padding over to the siamese cat. Rosekit sat stubbornly, not willing to leave her mother and father.

“Muddyspots, maybe we should let her… She needs closure. Besides, by the end of the vigil, she’ll still probably fall asleep,” Mistscar urged his friend, who sighed a bit.

“I know, it’s just… I don’t want to choose between her grieving and her getting the rest she needs to grow up strong,” the deputy admitted.

“I don’t think this is your choice to make. We have to let her make some of her own decisions, which includes this. She’s young but… she still has a heart and mind of her own, y’know?” the black tom reasoned.

“You’ve got me there… alright, Rosekit, you can stay up. Just because this is important, alright?”

The little golden kit nodded, stepping back over to her siblings as Velvetfur took Lilykit back to the nursery. Muddyspots looked over at the four siblings as Everstar stepped forward.

“Tonight, all cats who were close with Thornsnatch and Sunfluff, who are old enough to catch their own prey… with the exception of Rosekit… will hold a silent, final vigil with the deceased. All who wish to join are welcome to,” the leader announced.

i think sasha's just an interesting character right off the bat, someone who caught the attention of tigerstar and got pulled into this horrible relationship and finally escaped. You really do feel for her when she's left to raise three kits all by herself and constantly has to choose between keeping them fed and being able to watch them.

i like Darktail as a villain and i like that he utilizes the lake, something that the clan's all live by is his greatest weapon. Drowning is scary to me so i'm probably biased lol OH and i like his moment of trying to connect with Violet

least favorite thing about them

for Sasha probably the lack of closure for her? i guess it's a double-edged sword, i kind of wish we got to learn more what happened to her and if she got the happy ending she deserved.

darktail....probably his backstory? it comes out of nowhere and doesn't add too much to anything. I'd also say the kin as a group are kind of generic bad group who hate old people, i think they could've done more with a group trying to emulate the Clans.
