Oh gosh, I apologize for such a long wait...! Life just punched me around a bit with studying for board exams (which I passed, thankfully!), a bit of technical problems with the BD version, and a lot of real life things I needed to take care of before the year ends (￣▽￣*)ゞ

Op. 4 covers chapters 33-47 of the original comic, with a few scenes/moments omitted. It is essentially the build-up to the climax of the story that was covered in Op. 5! We were also blessed with the addition of Miss Mary Morstan and Adam Whiteley for this musical, and I hope everyone falls in love with them, too~!

Anyway, here are the subs~! A huge, huge thank you to @mouldering for helping me with proof-reading and quality checking! Lestrade is so funny, and now he's got a serious song. For as much as we laugh at his silly antics, he really is a pure man at heart, who just wants the best for everyone. I love that the musical pushed Lestrade to the forefront, with much credit to how much of a show stealer Takagi Shun is, but it really is a beauty to see a minor character in the anime\manga be treated with much care in the musical.

Shun Skywalker

Has said that if he ever lost his mask, not just Shun Skywalker but Shun Watanabe would cease to exist (that he would stop wrestling all together – but let me stress this, Shun Skywalker is not a man you should trust at all, he lies a lot).

When I say ‘odd’ I mean he used to wear a very bright green bodysuit and mask (known to fans as the frog suit) and would startle his opponents by doing this weird arms out pose and yelling “SKYWALK!” He also used to walk and stand in a weird way, which you might think was just how he is, and that it’s rude of me to mention this, but it was an intentional decision as it has returned alongside the bodysuit in his latest run as top nutcase of the promotion.

He may have seemed like he was a normal dude during his time as the leader of Masquerade until the Mascara Contra Mascara match of 2021, but it’s hard to ignore how Masquerade’s wore Venetian masks (to disguise their true selves) and performed an unnaturally perfect group entrance. This all being Shun’s creative decisions.

An analysis of Shun Skywalker vs Jason Lee from 2022

By him acting like a cult leader I mean he’s manipulative, possessive, toxic, hypocritical, eccentric and loud.

Shun Skywalker is not the straightest man on the roster, and I swear I’m not mentioning this because of my own preferences when it comes to what I like in my wrestling. This is a legitimately significant element to his character that you need to know about. The most obvious example of this is his relationship with Jason, which can be read as an abusive romantic relationship. This is merely a reading and not explicitly canon, but it certainly feels canon given the amount of support this reading has been given. This includes: Kzy on commentary comparing Shun’s behaviour to an ex-boyfriend showing up at their ex-girlfriend’s place of work just to “check up on them”, Strong Machine J straight up saying on commentary “ladies, don’t date a man like Shun Skywalker”, Jae on English commentary consistently making similar comparisons and even an article on Yahoo! News reading “Jason Lee breaks free from his deranged ex-boyfriend to join Natural Vibes”. Shun himself regularly uses romantic language and songs when talking or posting about Jason. Back before Jason returned to him, he would talk about how even though Jason had “broke his heart” he only loves him more and knows Jason will come back to him eventually, which he did. Jason is not the only man he’s made these sorts of advances towards, his most notable other target being Jacky Kamei. At a contract signing once, Shun said that he wanted to run away with Jason and Kamei and get married to them. He has a ‘type’ of man he likes to go after: cute face, deep thinker when it comes to their wrestling, pleasant but also capable of being malicious. This could be seen with his targeting of Yuki Ueno at All Together.

For the longest time he was billed at much smaller than he weighs, assumedly because every time they tried to weigh him, he just teleported away. So, he was 90 kg up until Dead or Alive 2024 where he was billed at 100 kg.

Has been compared to a variety of different animals throughout his career, from a falcon to a jellyfish to a goat and even a mosquito.

Yes, he pads his ass big time. I assume it’s because he lands on his butt for a lot of his moves. When you take off all the padding, he still has an impressive ass though…not that I would know or anything hahahaha-

Fun fact: He trained at Animal Hamaguchi’s gym and was close with Shingo Takagi.

Jason Lee

Everyone in Natural Vibes really seemed to love Jason, all having a soft spot for him. He formed the dynamic trio J.J.J with Jacky Kamei and Strong Machine J.

As previously mentioned, he was a part of Kung Fu Masters, but has since said he never wanted to be in the "dumb comedy unit" and hated every moment of it.

Once again, I recommend watching gutsdozer’s video if you want to know more about the ‘Jason Lee Saga’ of 2022.

Used to occasional make appearances on English commentary alongside Jae when Ho Ho Lun was wrestling. Unfortunately, with his turn, it seems we won’t hear from him again. I personally hope he does just barge in when Ho Ho is gone and spend the time on commentary just shitting on everyone.

Borrows a lot of his heel traits from Shun.

He once had washboard abs but accepted the sumo genes and bulked up. He has said that he will never have the abs again and if anyone misses them, just to look at the pictures and video that exists of it and remember it that way.

Deceptively short, I thought he was much taller than he is (168cm or 5’6”).

a quick look back at january 2024

This year, I've decided to start keeping record of what matches I watch/what my reactions to them are, something that I'd done previously but had dropped for 2023. I'm trying out using a spreadsheet instead of a purely text document for this one. Beyond being much more pleasant for me to scroll through, this has the added benefit of letting me crunch numbers. While I don't think a lot of the nitty-gritty statistics will be of interest to anyone but myself, I thought it might be fun to do some kind of end-of-the-month write-up. Maybe I'll do one for each month, who's to say.

Anyway!

BROAD NUMBERS I ended up watching 64 matches this month, 50 of which took place this month. A large portion of those were from ittenyon week. I was kind of worn out after that and had other things I wanted to focus on, so I haven't been keeping up with anything consistently other than DDT, which made up a third of what I viewed this month. This will probably continue into the future; I have some backwatching plans. Tied for second place are NOAH and Dragongate, which also tracks. I really need to catch up on NOAH, I've barely seen anything from it since The New Year. I've also been pretty hit-or-miss with Dragongate, but I've really been enjoying getting more into it. It's fun! There are plots going on that I'm kind of invested in! Shun Skywalker is there, being the most normal man who's ever lived! Good times.

MOST APPEARANCES THROUGHOUT THE MONTH In terms of "matches that I watched this month," Danshoku Dieno and HARASHIMA tied for first place with five appearances each; for "matches that took place this month," Dieno and Hideki Okatani tied with four. As he made it to first place in both categories, that makes Danshoku Dieno the inaugural Spreadsheet Champ!

I think this is going to be one of the more interesting things to keep track of throughout the year- based on the metrics for this month, I'm going to guess that it's going to bias heavily towards people who appear often in undercard multi-mans.

MATCHES THIS MONTH I don't consider myself much of a writer nor someone with taste, so this isn't a "best of the month" list or a collection of thought-out analysis. I'm just going back through the month's viewing and picking a few things to chat about.

ULKA SASAKI VS TAKASHI SUGIURA (NOAH, JAN 1st) Spent the entire match being wildly jealous of Ulka Sasaki's hair. I have actual thoughts about the match itself—I thought it was a pretty solid showing considering it was Sasaki's first singles match and I'm definitely interested in seeing how he grows from here—but my most substantial takeaway was "Maybe I should dip-dye my hair."

KENOH VS MANABU SOYA (NOAH, JAN 1st) I've tried typing something up about this multiple times, but I feel I can't articulate my feelings properly. I'm just going to leave it at "go watch Kenoh vs Soya." Amazing performance from them both.

KAZUCHIKA OKADA VS BRYAN DANIELSON (NJPW, JAN 4th) Worked for me in all of the ways their first singles encounter didn't.

SHINGO TAKAGI VS MASAAKI MOCHIZUKI (DRAGONGATE, JAN 10th)

LUIS MANTE VS JACKY"FUNKY"KAMEI (DRAGONGATE, JAN 11th) Mante apologizing to the audience for the violence he's inflicting on Kamei and not to Kamei himself…fascinating.

HARASHIMA VS TORU OWASHI VS KAZUKI HIRATA (DDT, JAN 14th)

MAO VS BRYAN KEITH (DDT, JAN 21st)

I'm sure that Okatani vs Sakaguchi will also make this list, but I missed seeing it live and have been saving it for when I can really sit down with it. Maybe I'll watch it tonight. Additionally, while I've limited the formal list to matches that took place this January, I'd also like to recommend Tanahashi's two appearances in DDT. Very fun, very interesting to see how strongly the audience reacts to asshole heel Tanahashi.

Isuzu Yamada in Osaka Elegy (Kenji Mizoguchi, 1936)

It's easy to imagine Kenji Mizoguchi's Osaka Elegy remade into a 1930s "women's picture" starring Bette Davis, except that nothing made in Hollywood under the infantilizing Production Code would have had the depth and insight into the real problems of women that Mizoguchi's film does. Mizoguchi's direction frames the story elegantly: He begins with a shot of the neon-lighted city, backed by the pop standard "Stairway to the Stars" on the soundtrack, as day gradually breaks and the glamour of the neon fades into the drab reality of the daytime city. We go to the home of Sonosuke Asai (Benkei Shiganoya), the head of a large pharmaceuticals company, where he berates the maids for small infractions and quarrels with his shrewish wife, Sumiko (Yoko Umemura). The opening sets a tone of disillusionment that pervades the entire film, which becomes a sharp commentary on both traditional and contemporary sexual roles. The film's protagonist is Ayako (Isuzu Yamada), switchboard operator at Asai Pharmaceuticals, whom Asai wants to become his mistress. Ayako is reluctant -- she has a boyfriend, Nishimura (Kensaku Hara), another employee at the company -- but her feckless father (Shinpachiro Asaka) has been skimming from the till at work and has lost the money in the stock market. So she quits her job, lets Asai set her up in a fancy modern apartment, and sends her father the money he needs. After Asai's wife uncovers the arrangement, a friend of Asai's, Fujino (Eitaro Shindo), tries to move in on Ayako. But Ayako reconnects with Nishimura, who proposes to her. Uncertain how he will respond to the truth about her life -- she has told him she works in a beauty parlor -- she postpones her answer. Then she learns from her younger sister that their brother is being forced to drop out of the university because her father can't pay the tuition. She gets the money by pretending to yield to Fujino's advances, but runs to Nishimura and agrees to marry him, while also confessing her liaison with Asai. As Nishimura is pondering this information, a furious Fujino arrives and after being turned away, calls the police, charging her with theft. Nishimura cravenly tells the police that he was innocently dragged into the affair by Ayako, but because it's her first offense she is released into her father's custody. Her family, whose money problems she has dutifully solved, shuns her and her brother calls her a "delinquent." Ayako walks out into the night and we follow her to a bridge, where she looks down into the trash-filled waters. But as we wonder if she is going to commit suicide, the family doctor, who has been present at several of the crisis points in her story, happens to meet her on the bridge. She asks him if there is a cure for delinquency, and when he says no, she accepts the judgment and, holding her head high, walks away toward the camera. Yamada's terrific performance was one of several she gave for Mizoguchi, establishing her as a specialist in strong female roles -- she is perhaps best-known by Western audiences as the Lady Macbeth equivalent in Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood (1957).

DESCRIPTION OF THE MOVIE THEATRE “SUCCESS SOU”

Standing quietly in a corner of Tokyo, there is a apartment that is known as “Success Sou”. Legend has it that living in the apartment are a group of young people with big dreams of success, and that one day, they will fulfill those dreams and leave the nest. Although they have very different careers and dreams, they all live together peacefully, and work hard to achieve their dreams.

Until one day, a mysterious group invades the peaceful apartment…

Unlike the usual TV dramas, “Success Sou” is produced in a similar way to a stage play: the cast gets one rehearsal before an entire episode is filmed in one take. Complete with a mix of scripted dialogue and adlibs, even when NGs happen, there are no cuts or edits. 

The franchise currently has three TV drama seasons, and a new movie has been announced. Like the TV drama, the 95-minute (1 hour and 35 minutes) movie has been filmed in one take with the use of 26 video cameras.

It has been announced that Sato Ryuji will join the cast for the movie as Caesar, a member of the mysterious group that invades the apartment known as the S4.

The package Daiki gave Yoshioka was a challenge for the Dream Gate from Ben-K, including a note that proclaimed his intention and a golden rose.

Konomama Ichikawa

He’s actually from Kakamigahara City, Gifu. Yes, he’s from the same prefecture as Shun.

He’ll lose to moves you never should lose to in times you’d only see in squashes. Sometimes he even taps out during a move that isn’t a submission (like when he’s being held in a powerbomb position).

Kancho - a prank performed by clasping the hands together in the shape of a gun and attempting to poke the victim’s butthole.

Some of the people who have answered Ichikawa’s open challenge include Jun Akiyama, Yuji Nagata, The Great Sasuke, Necro Butcher, Akebono (rip king), Kensuke Sasaki, Abdullah The Butcher, Atsushi Onita, Yoshiaki Fujiwara, Keiji Muto, Shingo Takagi (returning from New Japan in a special only once a year appearance).

Ichikawa has only wrestled once this year so far, taking it easy and letting his body recover from getting beaten up mercilessly for about 25 years?

Estrella was a talented amateur wrestler before getting into Dragongate, which is why he’s a bit older than you would expect something who debuted in 2020 to be. Does he use his amateur wrestling skills in the ring? If you make him, but for the most part, he’s flipping all over the place like you forgot to turn gravity on.

Estrella splits his time between DG and North America, wrestling in the U.S and Mexico.

Shuji Kondo

Kondo only has one championship reign in Dragongate (with it being a very recent Twin Gate reign with Kenoh as members of Kongo) as he was fired in December 2004 alongside the rest of Aagan Iisou for alleged behavioural issues. He only returned to Dragongate in 2019.

Kenichiro Arai

Just last year Araken had a match with GENTARO that got a bit of buzz in the English-speaking puro scene on Twitter. I haven’t seen it myself, but I heard a lot of good about it.

Araken is also a proud supporter of the Hanshin Tigers and was thrilled when they broke the Colonel Sanders statue river curse (look it up if you don’t know what I’m talking about, you won’t regret it).

Ryo Saito

SaiRyo has been in both Real Hazard and JIMMYZ (the same as Horiguchi). I don’t think I need to really explain how impressive it to be able to be in both one of the heel units and the face units, and it not feel weird at all. Genki and SaiRyo are amazing.

Ah yes, the “AGO” joke... well... this is the story. Once upon a time, in a far, far away land (depending on where you are), there was a man named Ise Naohiro. Ise Naohiro was cast as the first Aberline of the first Kuromyu, “That Butler, Friendship”, 2009.

The musicals made a creative choice of turning Inspector Aberline into a comic relief, and therewith cast a comedic type actor. Aberline is a very mediocre inspector, so his performance nor presence make an impression on people. In the musical, Ise took a glorious initiative of turning his name into a joke.

And so the unmemorable “Aberline” was constantly misnamed, called “Underline”, “Deadline”, “Landline”. It became the running gag within the 2009 musical.

Then comes “The Most Beautiful Death in the World” (2010) which introduced the musical-only character, Sharp Hanks. Aberline introduced himself to Sharp Hanks, but the latter misheard his name, and called him “Inspector Chin-line” (Ago no Line. “Ago” = chin in Japanese). And then Aberline was so hurt because not only was misnamed AGAIN, it addressed an insecurity of his (please note how the actor Ise’s chin is quite unpronounced). When Aberline expressed his anger and self-consciousness, Hanks immediately shared that he understands that feeling, for he’s been bullied for having a butt-chin.

Hanks comforted Aberline saying: “Don’t worry, my name is “Sharp”, so you and I together form a great team! You shall be “chin-line” and with me it is “sharp”. Together we’ll have a sharp chin-line! (Sharp chin-lines are the conventional beauty standard in Japan). As the two inspectors united in their misery, a formidable team was born. And so the Kuromyu legacy was born.

Then comes the second generation Aberline, Takagi Shun. Takagi is a comedian with quite a pronounced chin himself. His large chin is also one of his most iconic features in the entertainment world. In this tweet of his he posted a portrait of himself with the caption:

“Left is Mamo (Miyano Mamoru) that I drew. Right is me drawn by Mamo. I am not going to say anything anymore (laughs).

And like an absolute pro, large-chin Takagi OWNED the “Inspector Chinline” sketch like no other.

Takagi’s Aberline is also very self-conscious about his mediocrity at work, so when Hanks did not immediately recognise his name, Aberline said: “you have not heard of my name, but surely my face of fame you recognise?” And Hanks said: “Oh right! Inspector Chin-line!!!” And thus the love-hate friendship was born between Aberline and Hanks.

And then the “Inspector Chinline” was immortalised.
