Japanese Junior Nationals Results
Junior Women
Gold : Mao Shimada
Silver : Kaoruko Wada
Bronze : Ikura Kushida
Ami Nakai is in 4th (did a three turn between her to jumps in combination in the short and fell on her 3A in the free). Rena Uezono finished 5th. All of them are going to Senior Nationals along with Haruna Murakami and Mayuko Oka who finished respectively 6th and 7th. Mei Okada had a horrible SP but a clean FS which allowed her to climb ten spots to place 8th.
Yo Takagi unfortunately ended up in 14th place. Just too many mistakes in both programs.
As for the Ultra-c elements.
Reina Kawakatsu, Ami Nakai and Mayuko Oka attempted the 3A. Only Reina landed her maybe with UR, haven't seen the protocols yet.
Mao Shimada landed the 3A but fell on the 4T.
Junior Men
Gold : Rio Nakata
Silver : Sena Takahashi
Bronze : Taiga Nishino
Shun Uemura, Shuntaro Asaga, Haru Kakiuchi. Ryoto Mori and Diaya Ebihara round up the top 8. Besides Rio not a lot of successful quads.
Junior Ice Dance
Gold : Sara Kishimoto/Atsuhiko Tamura
Silver : Sumire Yoshida/Ibuki Ogahara (the kids with the One Piece FD)
Bronze : Kaho Yamashita/Yuto Nagata
Only Sae and Lucas were competing for the pairs.
What does it mean for Junior Worlds Assignments ?
Only the winner is guaranteed an assignment. For junior men and women the other two spots will be selected by taking into account Junior Nationals and Senior Nationals placement + JGPF performance.

2024 Japanese Nationals Competitor List: The MEN
One of the most, if not the most competitive nationals in the figure skating world, the Japanese Nationals never fails to bring incredible stress every year. WHAT'S AT STAKE? The 2024 Japanese Nationals will decide the assignments for the following skaters: - 2025 World Championships - 2025 Four Continents Championships (4CC) - 2025 World Junior Championships. The National Champion automatically goes to Worlds. The 2025 World Championships will decide how many spots the Japanese Men will have at the 2026 Olympic Games, with 3 maximum spots available. Considering the level of internal competition between the men, they would/should do everything to send a Worlds Team that can keep those spots. Also at stake is the Skater's Development Level (read: receiving financial funding) for the 2025-2026 season: highest placements at Nationals will be listed as Special Development Players, and the placements below them will be listed as Development A and B. But no worries - should a skater receive Grand Prix invitations or qualify for the NHK Trophy host spot in 2025-2026 season, they can be moved up so they can get the funding necessary for travel and entry to attend the GP.
THE SEEDS: 2 SKATERS The silver and bronze medalists of last year's Japanese Nationals, Yuma Kagiyama and Sota Yamamoto received automatic qualification for Japanese Nationals and did not have to compete in the qualifying rounds (Regionals and Sectionals). Yuma is bidding for his first senior National title, having previously won 3 National bronze medals and 1 National silver medal.
EASTERN JAPAN: 9 SKATERS From this region, only Koshiro Shimada has medaled at senior Nationals with his silver in 2022. Kao Miura and Shun Sato are both bidding for their first senior Nationals podium. Kosho Oshima, Nozomu Yoshioka, Ryota Kitamura, Haruto Toda, Ryushin Yamada and Ryusei Kikuchi will also compete.
WESTERN JAPAN: 11 SKATERS From this region, the 2008 National Champion (?!?!?!?!) Nobunari Oda will compete at his final Japanese Nationals. The last time Nobu competed here was ELEVEN YEARS AGO. He also beat a bunch of kids to qualify as the 2024 Western Japan Regional Champion. Only Tatsuya Tsuboi and Kazuki Tomono have beaten Nobu this year. Takeru Amine Kataise, Shunsuke Nakamura, Takumi Sugiyama, Yuto Kishina, Sena Miyake, Shun Kobayashi, Haruki Honda and Shunya Matsuoka will also compete.
THE JUNIORS: 8 SKATERS JSF gives recommendations every year for the top finishers at the Japanese Junior Nationals to participate at the senior Nationals. Rio Nakata was just crowned as the new Junior National Champion, and the runner-up and his fellow JGP Finalist Sena Takahashi will want to join him in the Junior Worlds team. There is one more spot in the Junior Worlds team that will be decided here. Taiga Nishino, Shun Uemura, Shuntaro Asaga, Haru Kakiuchi, Ryoto Mori and Daiya Ebihara will also compete.

Driver Profiles: Yuki Tsunoda
Updated December 2024
Name: Yuki Tsunoda
Age: 24
Nationality: Japanese
Years in F1: 4 (AlphaTauri/VCARB 2021-Present)
Number: 22
WDCs: N/A
Driving Style: One of the newest drivers on track, Tsunoda is known for his aggression, raw speed, and temper. He drives in an extremely modern way, compared to many of the older drivers who still drive with traces of more classic styles. He tends to pull bold overtakes and does a lot of late-braking maneuvers, and this allows him to be very assertive in wheel-to-wheel situations. On the negative side, Tsunoda's temper and aggression leads him make mistakes, and he has been criticized for his lack of consistency. This aggression also means he pushes the car very hard, and wears out his tires fast.
History:
Tsunoda was born to a racing family, with a father racing in the Gymkhana Car Competition in Japan. He grew up around the track, and started karting when he was 5 years old. In 2006 he won the series championship at the Nakai Inner Circuit, where he had watched his father race. He started professional carting in 2010, joining the JAF Junior Karting Championship, before moving to the regional class in 2013 (winning that series) and to the national class in 2014. In 2015 he placed second in the All Japan Karting Championship FS125 Class.
(Young Tsunoda in his karting days)
In 2016, Tsunoda graduated from Honda's Suzuka Circuit Racing School in the advanced formula class and became a member of the Honda Formula Dream Project. In the same year he made his single-seater debut in the F4 Japanese Championship in a one-off event in Suzuka. At this race he earned his 1st podium. 2017 was when he started his first full season in the F4 Japanese Championship while also competing in the regional championship. He would go on to get 1st in the regional and 3rd in the national championship. 2018 Tsunoda would continue in Japanese F4, and win the championship with 7 race wins.
(Tsunonda in the F4 Japanese Championship series)
2018 Tsunoda would join the Red Bull Junior program after Honda became engine suppliers for the F1 team. He joined the FIA Formula 3 Championship that year, winning one race in Monza and achieving 9th in the standings. Tsunoda also competed in the Euroformula Open Championship during this time, and finished 4th in the standings. Early 2020 it was announced that Tsunoda would be moving up to Formula 2 for the 2020 season. Before that, he competed in the 2020 Toyota Racing Series and placed 4th.
(Tsunoda on top step of podium during F3, along with future RB teammate Liam Lawson, left)
His 2020 F2 debut was a relatively positive for a rookie, with some high points finishes and podiums, but also a few races where he scored very low. He finished his season in 3rd. During that season he test drove his first F1 car, for Toro Rosso/AlphaTauri. He would go on to be announced for the 2021 AlphaTauri lineup.
(Tsunoda during F2 days)
His first year at AlphaTauri was a mix between good and bad. While he had some fantastic results (highest being 4th) he also had some very poor ones, often finishing outside of points and being our paced by his teammate Pierre Gasly. However, he was near universally praised for his rookie season, with the F1 Technical Director calling it the best rookie season he had seen in a few. 2022, however, was a difficult year for Tsunoda, usually finishing outside of points position. His best finish was 10th, and this race ended a streak of zero points finishes. He was outpaced by his teammate once again, and would finish 17th in the championship
(Tsunoda and Gasly in their AlphaTauri's)
He would be retained by AlphaTauri for 2023, partnering Nyck de Vries (who would be replaced by Daniel Riccardo halfway), and would have another difficult year. He would score low points a handful of times throughout the season. the most positive moment for Tsunoda was in Abu Dhabi, where he led the race for a short time, his first lead ever. Unfortunately he would drop down to 8th, but still showed improvement.
In 2024 AlphaTauri rebranded to RB (often called VCARB) and Tsunoda was retained. He has had a more positive year, outpacing teammate Daniel Riccardo (who was replaced by Liam Lawson after the Singapore GP), but still regularly ends up outside of the points. In the 2024 Japanese GP he would happily finish in 10th, becoming the first Japanese driver since 2012 to score points on home soil. The most positive aspect of that year for Tsunoda is that his qualifying pace has been stellar, regularly making it into Q3. He finished the season 12th in the standings.
He is set to remain with RB for the 2025 season.
(Tsunoda with the 2024 VCARB car)
Major Races:
2021 Bahrain GP - His debut race in F1, he finished in 9th scoring some points for his team. He made some fantastic overtakes during the race, including a memorable last-lap one on Lance Stroll. It was an impressively confident race despite his inexperience.
2021 Abu Dhabi - His highest finish ever of 4th, he took advantage of the chaos, overtaking on his teammate to take the higher finish of the two AlphaTauri's.
2022 Emilia Romagna GP - One of his strongest race performances yet, he finished in 7th after multiple bold, yet crafty, overtakes. He showed his evolving race craft and willingness to push the limit in a lesser car.
2022 Spanish GP - While his finish was not fantastic (only 10th) he showed remarkably improved composure compared to previous races. This displayed how Tsunoda was evolving as a racer, and how he overcomes his main weakness to make his race craft better.
2024 Japanese GP - A happy race for Japan after Tsunoda became the first points scorer on home soil since 2012. While he did finish just inside the points (10th), it was a monumental day for Japanese fans and Tsunoda.
Cheers,
-B

❣️ Cherry Magic - It's cute so far, this is the first adaption where I've actually seen the original and I'm pleasantly surprised. The plot is familiar but they're adding things to it which is nice. It's extended and more explorative compared to the OG but in an endearing way. TayNew do the roles justice, I couldn't imagine a better fit tbh. And even Mark and Junior make the side couple likable who I really did not like in the original lol. Thumbs up so far 🫶🏻

Some changes in education, as well as the news media, I'd encourage if I were calling the shots.
December 16, 2024
To the handful of followers of what I put down in this space: "I'm back," as James Brown shouted in his mid '70s tune "Get Up Offa That Thing." This is the first essay I've written since late September. That's because, as is often said, life happened. But as it did I continued to try to "figure it all out." As a result, here are some recent thoughts...
I think it would be a good idea to take a page from the Japanese and teach elementary school students such things as thinking of others, doing your best, not giving up, respecting your elders, working in a group, ethical decision making, etc. I'm probably drifting close to the areas of religion and politics, which I normally try to avoid doing, but when I propose these things it must be said that I am an ardent believer in the separation of church and state. The Ten Commandments are a wonderful thing, but I don't think they should be the purview of public education. To those who think they should be mounted and framed in public school classrooms, I think not. They should be taught at home and in our parochial schools. As they always have been.
I would like to see civics courses taught in all our junior highs and high schools. I'm talking about education pertaining to our rights and responsibilities as citizens, the voting process, the Constitution, how the three branches of government work (or should work), etc. Three things about me that have influenced my strong feelings about this not-very-new idea: 1) I follow political news pretty closely, but realize that most people don't engage with it until it's time for a major election. 2) I visited Poland when it was a Communist country and experienced life under authoritatian rule where inefficiency abounded, you could be severely punished for publicly saying what you believe about politics, and an underground, black-market economy thrived. 3) I think it's our responsibility to participate in the democratic process, meaning that everyone should, at the very least, vote.
I have long thought that no high school should have an enrollment larger than about 450 kids. I went to a school of such size. The education I received had its pluses and minuses, but I don't think many of my schoolmates felt anonymous. Then, while attending a university with almost 40,000 students, I lived in a dorm with about 600 young men. That 450-to-600 range seemed manageable to me--large enough for kids to explore and discover, small enough for one to be noticed.
This isn't an original thought, but I tend to think that all kids should do a year of public service after graduation from high school (something akin to AmeriCorps). They could teach inner city kids and the rural poor how to read; help clean up our urban areas; assist in the maintainence of our national parks; and much, much more. While doing so, they could be exposed to the building trades, to major fields of university study, and to opportunities afforded by the military. I doubt that most 18- and 19-year-olds really know what they want to do with their lives. Public service could open up their eyes to the possibilites while serving the greater good.
Although I received my degree in advertising, I started college as a journalism major; I remain a newspaper person at heart. According to Politico, more than two-thirds of reporting jobs have vanished since 2005. And daily newspapers are dying at a rate of two per day. Moreover, it continues to pain me that most people get their information from sources that tell them what they want to hear. That's why I think it would be a good idea for some network to launch news programmming (with attendant website, podcasts and blogs) that incluedes a show featuring 45 minutes of hard journalism--the facts, with objective details about complex issues--followed by 45 minutes of debate between pundits on all sides.
That's all for now. More hairbrained ideas to come as they happen.

37 consultation requests made by kids regarding Unification Church worries: Japan government
February 19, 2024 (Mainichi Japan)
TOKYO – Japan's national government on Feb. 16 passed a Cabinet resolution recognizing 37 cases of children seeking guidance over worries related to the controversial religious group Unification Church. • The move was in response to a written question from opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP) House of Representatives member Kazunori Yamanoi. The government said that as of the end of January there were 24 cases of children seeking advice from school counsellors, and 13 where they called a Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology support line with worries relating to the group, formally called the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification.
By topic and with multiple selections possible, 24 cases involved the home environment – the most common concern – and five consultations from junior high students were about stopping going to school. More than one case with high school counselors involved physical and mental health, academic choices and other points.
In November 2022, the education ministry asked prefectural education boards and others to implement guidance services regarding the Unification Church. This was so that schools would not respond passively to students' problems just because they were religious in nature.
In reply to Yamanoi, the national government stated, "We believe we've established a thorough system of support to deal closely and individually with students who are troubled on a variety of issues." (Japanese original by Nao Ikeda, Political News Department)

2024 goals
This is a non-comprehensive list of some things I want to achieve in the new year. Maybe I’ll set reminders to check in on this as the year goes on.
Downsize
I want less stuff. Every time we move there’s a box or two full of random stuff that just sits in another box or drawer until we move again. Not great! But also so tedious to go through! I’d love to take a week and just really decide what things I need, and what things are weighing me down. And also figure out eBay.
Read a book each month
I read my first full books since high school this year, and I enjoyed it a lot. I always envy readers and bookworms. I have a lot of other media I like that can eat away at my free time (games, shows, films). Zelda especially has just torpedoed my free time. I’ve loved every second of it, but wow is there a lot to do in that game.
Getting off topic. Point is: time short, want read book. I got a couple for Christmas so I’ll start there! To make it more of a tangible goal, I’ll try to read one book each month. I can already tell you I’ll fail but at least it gives me a framework.
Brush up on a language
I took three different languages in school: Spanish in junior high, Latin in high school, and German in college. I’d like to brush up on either Spanish or German in the new year.
Spanish is vastly more practical for me because of where I live, and would be used weekly if not daily.
German is of interest to me because my family is from Switzerland. Ideally I’d love to learn the Swiss-German my extended family speaks, but learning resources are scarce. And nearly all of them are fluent in English so it’s not a pressing matter. Just would feel nice to connect more with that family history.
Then there’s an entirely impractical side of me that wants to learn Japanese. Japan is the Switzerland of Asia in a lot of ways and visiting this past summer made me want to go back so badly. Probably has the most uphill battle to learn though, so maybe I’ll leave that for another year.
My tentative plan is to put on some videos and such while I do dishes or other chores, when my ears and brain are a captive audience!
Establish a workout rhythm
This is such the stereotypical New Year’s resolution, but yeah, I’d like to get fit. Specifically, I want to know what it’s like to feel “in shape”. Especially since becoming a father, there are so many things in my daily life that I think would be so much easier if my muscles were just a bit stronger or my heart and lungs a little more efficient.
How am I going to do this? Not sure yet. There’s a gym club near us that offers childcare so I might try that for a bit. I’ve tried running before and I liked it when I could find the time for it. And Fitness+ gets flack but I’ve done quite a few exercises through it and it’s honestly quite enjoyable.
I’ll end up doing a combo. Or nothing at all. But maybe me saying this into the internet will provide some sense of accountability. Ideally I just want to get into a sustainable rhythm. Doesn’t have to be much, just something.
Use public transit?
This is a tough one for me. Right now I live in the mountains on a somewhat steep, busy, and narrow road with a lot of blind turns. This makes riding a bike a bit treacherous from my home, especially after dark. When the days start to get longer, I’d like to try riding my bike to the bus station and ride the bus to work more often. It tags on quite a bit of extra time in my commute, but I’ve just grown to really resent driving recently. Tough in a car-dependent area of a car-dependent nation.
Unlock the power of Costco
At the end of this year we went to Costco a few times and I forgot how much is there in terms of building blocks for easy meals. I want to come up with some meal plans using Costco stuff to cut down on grocery costs and also make dinner a bit easier at the end of the day.
Well that’s about it. I have some other vague goals of journaling or meditating but I can’t really put it into words yet.
See you in a few months, wall of text.

Olympic Swimming: Japan's swimmers to shine at Tokyo Olympic
The Japan swimming club, bragging the preferences men's 200m breaststroke world record holder Ippei Watanabe and adolescent sensation Rikako Ikee, won just four silvers and three bronzes. Olympic fans from all over the world are invited to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platform for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Swimming followers can book Olympic Swimming Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on discounted prices.
It was apparently a more unfortunate take than their count of two golds, two silvers, and three bronzes finally year's Rio Olympics. Be that as it may, Tokyo Shigaibu Swim Club mentor Yoshida Takahiro is supporting his nation's swim stars to sparkle in the center separation occasions at the Tokyo Olympic.
Since Athens 2004, 16 of the 31 decorations Japan have succeeded at the Olympic have originated from 200m occasions over the butterfly, breaststroke and backstroke.
In view of the size and system of Japanese swimmers, we don't have the ability to do well in short-or long-separation occasions, however, center separation occasions are beneficial for us, said the 44-year-old at the Chinese Swimming Club
Composed with club lead trainer Yamada Hirofumi, Takahiro has brought eight swimmers, matured 11 or 12, to resist at the Super Junior Swimming Invitational at the club's premises today and tomorrow. Takahiro said that Japan could do well in breaststroke and individual variety of occasions, and transfers, for example, the 400m mixture and 800m free.
Be that as it may, while any semblance of Ikee and four-time Olympic gold medalist Kosuke Kitajima made their Olympic presentations at 16 and 17 separately, Takahiro thinks there is minimal possibility for his charges to contend in Olympic 2020.
Most of our top swimmers will be more than 20 years of age in 2020 and they (his club's swimmers) will have a decent possibility for 2024. An aggregate of 548 swimmers from 39 clubs - including 14 remote ones - will contend in the second release of the lesser meet this end of the week.

Driving Style: A particularly tenacious driver, Gasly is known for his blend of aggression and precision. He excels in tight racing and extracts strong performances from his car. Gasly is also known for being particularly adaptive, which allows his to take advantage of difficult conditions and score higher than he might it normal ones. The downside to his style is that he struggles with consistency, especially when he does not like his car and when he is not feeling confident. This can snowball into worse and worse results as his confidence goes down with each bad race.
History:
Gasly was born to a legacy racing family, with his grandparents and his father racing cars and karts competitively. He karted for the first time when he was 6 years old, and started competing when he was 10 in 2006. He finished 15th in the French Minime Championship, and the next year he finished 4th. In 2008 he stepped up to the French Cadet Championship, before moving to the international scene in 2009. He moved into the KF3 category, staying until the end of 2010, where he finished 2nd in the CIK-FIA European Championship.

In 2011, Gasly made his debut in single-seaters, taking part in the French F4 Championship 1.6-litre category. He finished 3rd, with seven podiums, including wins at Spa, Albi and Le Castellet. Gasly moved to the 2-litre Formula Renault machinery in 2012, and finished 10th. He achieved podiums at Spa and the Nürburgring that year. He also had seven starts in the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup, taking a podium at the Nürburgring.

For 2013, Gasly moved to Tech 1 Racing. He took five podiums, as well as victories at Moscow, the Hungaroring and Le Castellet. He held the championship lead into the final race and clinched the title, making it his first car racing title. In 2014 he moved up to Formula Renault 3.5 Series, and was also recruited for the Red Bull Junior Team. He finished the season as runner-up to another Red Bull Junior, and future F1 driver, Carlos Sainz.
(Gasly during Formula Renault days)
He made his GP2 debut in 2014, replacing a driver during the season, and had positive results. During this time he was signed as the Red Bull reserve driver for the 2015 season. In 2016 he would switch to GP2 powerhouse PREMA Racing and become champion after a strong season. His next racing series (in 2017) was Japanese Super Formula, an extremely successful championship for Gasly. He would win multiple races and achieve regular podiums. He finished 2nd in the championship, only half a point away from the title. The performances in GP2 and Super Formula garnered more F1 attention. Late in 2017 he replaced Toro Rosso driver Daniil Kvyat, his first F1 experience. He had mixed results and was unable to complete every race due to conflicts with the 2017 Super Formula Championship.
(Gasly after his GP2 championship)
Early 2018, Gasly was announced for the full time seat at Toro Rosso in the 2018 season. This season would prove to be positive for Gasly, earning some high points finishes and staying ahead of his teammate. His performance there would encourage Red Bull to move him to their seat for the 2019 season after Daniel Riccardo left for Renault. Red Bull, unfortunately, would be where Gasly would run into some trouble.
Partnering Max Verstappen, Gasly got a rough start to his Red Bull career. His first few races Gasly did not score any points or DNFd, and he was only able to score low points after that. His best result was a 4th place finish after his teammate and Sebastian Vettel collided. His results, especially compared to Verstappen, convinced Red Bull to remove him half way through the year. He was switched back down to Toro Rosso and replaced by Alex Albon.
(Gasly after DNFing in his Red Bull)
His time back at Toro Rosso was instantly more positive. He achieved points finishes at almost every race, and won his first podium, taking 2nd at Brazilian GP. It seemed that returning to the Junior team helped Gasly find his confidence again, which was noted by Red Bull boss Christian Horner. He would finish the year 7th in the championship, and have out paced his teammate.
(Gasly on his first F1 podium)
Toro Rosso rebranded to AlphaTauri for the 2020 season, and retained Gasly. This year was again positive for Gasly. He achieved several points finishes, and won his first GP in Monza, a spectacular win for the Frenchman. This led to speculation that Gasly would return to Red Bull, but no announcements were made. He was retained by AlphaTauri for the 2021 season and was partnered by rookie Yuki Tsunoda. This would be an even more positive year for Gasly. he finished in high points positions often, and achieved his third podium finish at Baku. He would finish the year with his highest points total, earning 101 over the course of the season
(Gasly after Monza win)
2022 was a less positive year, but not completely terrible. He scored low points, but ended the year only scoring 22, which compared to the previous year was quite low. While AlphaTauri had intentions of keeping Gasly for the 2023 season, in late 2022 it was revealed that he was in discussions with Alpine (Renault) after they lost both their drivers. It was soon announced that Gasly would switch to Alpine for the 2023 season, and thus his Red Bull connection ended.
(Gasly in his 2023 Alpine)
His first season with Alpine was pretty average, and he partnered notorious wild cannon Esteban Ocon, who he famously did not get along with. He scored low points, and finished the year only a few points ahead of his teammate, making their partnership a relatively equal one. He was retained for the 2024 season, and had a pretty negative year in the beginning. He has only scored points in Monaco (10th) and Canada (9th). The latter half was much more positive, with his highest result being a 3rd place finish in Brazil. He went on to help his team take 6th in the WCC, and ended the season 10th in the WDC.
He is set to continue with Alpine in the 2025 season partnering rookie Jack Doohan
Major Races:
2019 Brazilian GP - Gasly's first podium finish, this result showed his ability to capitalize on chaotic races. This was crucial to his career, especially after being demoted from the Red Bull seat.
2020 Italian GP - Gasly's first win after another chaotic race where several cars DNF'd. A well timed pit stop and his defensive driving skills allowed him to claim victory.
2020 Austrian GP- In a race where AlphaTauri was not expected to be competitive, Gasly finished 7th. He had an impressive drive and his race pace was the highlight.
2021 Baku GP - Another podium finish with AlphaTauri, he had multiple strong battles throughout the race and showcased his maturity as a driver. Memorably, he held off Ferrari's Charles Leclerc for the finish.
2024 Brazilian GP - AN action packed wet race saw Gasly drive brilliantly to make it into 3rd, his highest finish of the year., He kept a cool head, avoided the chaos, and drove brilliantly.
Cheers,
