Nox turned, only able to see the red hair making its way through the crowd, bobbing beneath the shoulders of the men in the room. By the time Vyvodskaya emerge she had quite thoroughly trounced on every toe, and the gown she was wearing— well, it wasn’t a gown at all.

“Ye gods,” Vyvodsky groaned, covering his eyes. “We should have known.”

“I told her to dress sensibly,” Orlov mumubled gruffly. “Something presentable.”

“You should have been more specific,” he said, but Orlov has no time to reply, not when his niece is already upon them.

“Good evening, Uncle,” she says, mouth wide, knowing what sensation she has caused, showing up in trousers and tall boots. “Maks.”

“I told you to wear something sensible,” Orlov said, stern. “And you show up like this…”

“I’m not wearing anything you aren’t,” she insisted, and Nox saw the truth of it. She wore the same as her brother, doublet and all, the only difference was that hers was in navy, rather than red.

“Well,” Vyvodsky huffed under his breath. “At least there’s no question who she favors between the two of you.”

Nox blinked, looking down at his stole. Navy, cut from the same cloth as Galina’s, perhaps even the same bolt. And Banassi—
