Summary: “Please tell me if I have understood correctly.” An inclination of his head invites her to continue. “My sons, who currently visit me only once a month, will now be allowed to see me only once every other month. And then, after a cycle of this, it will be only once per season. And then after that, I presume, I will see them only once a year.” Or not at all. That is no doubt the ultimate aim. Not at all. Madam Lan lives long enough to take back some agency--and her sons. Kay's comments: This series is not yet completed, but the first two stories are finished and they can be read as standalones. I really love it when Mama Lan is given a) a name b) the chance to run away with her children. Women looking out for women was awesome in this story and Wangxian's first meeting during the Sunshot Campaign was great too! They are immediately so gone for each other. Excerpt: When A-Zhan arrives right after breakfast, she is as composed as she ever is. He doesn’t run up the steps anymore, not like he used to, the sound of his little drumming feet waking joy in her heart. They had put a stop to that when he was four years old, and for almost three years now, he has walked carefully up the stairs in steps as measured as his uncle’s. He works so hard, her sweet boy, to maintain the control they demand of him. She misses the enthusiasm of his toddlerhood, but even now, when the doors open, his eyes light up, brighter than sunlight, warmer than flame. She sees him knot his little hands into fists, the only evidence of how hard he is working to keep himself from running to her as he walks steadily across the floor. But when he reaches her, he falls into her arms with the same heartrending sigh, and he rubs his face against the silk of her clothes like he did as a baby. She pulls him close, buries her face in the silk and scent of his hair, and holds him until the clearing of a throat makes her loosen her arms. She is never allowed to be alone with her children; there’s always someone watching them. Today it’s the sour-faced lady with the streaks of grey in her hair standing just inside the door—it’s always her these days. In times past, it was sometimes a short, round old lady whose face was always blank but whose eyes were sad when they looked at her. But someone besides Jing Yufei must have noticed, for they don’t let that woman chaperone anymore. Now it is always one of the women whose expressions make it clear they see her as a murderer, not a mother. It dampens the joy her sons bring her, but she has learned to ignore it.

I’ve still been trying to gather my thoughts and it hasn’t quite processed that it’s over! But what a beautiful last chapter, and such an emotionally fulfilling series that has come to mean so much to me in such a short period of time.

(some final thoughts under the cut for spoilers!)

The parallels and fulfillment of this finale to the first chapter and Loop 100 in general…… were so beautifully executed. This was such a wonderful fulfillment of UU’s themes and I am so appreciative that it stayed true and faithful to its characters and their happy endings until the very end.

While I do still feel that the final Ragnarok arc was lacking in some areas, at no point was there any betrayal of the story’s core values and message which is more than I feel a lot of series can claim.

(And there’s not to mention the bigger conversation of the uncertainty of continued serialization by Jump which is likely why some corners were cut near the end, but it’s clear despite that Tozuka was able to tell the story that he wanted to even if he didn’t quite have the time to flesh everything out as much as he would’ve liked)

Anyways! I wanted to talk a little bit about these guys and their final appearances because they mean everything to me genuinely.

What a perfect conclusion for Rip! At his core he has always only ever wanted to help and heal everyone around him, and what a great way for him to continue doing this for those who desperately need it completely non-profit. To be completely honest I was never the biggest fan of the idea of him going back to Iseult after everything was said and done, because he’s never seemed the kind of person who would only help those who could afford a big fancy hospital, and this choice for his character is so faithful to who he truly is and I adore it more than words can describe.

And him and Andy remaining so close at the end as well! They both had such a significant impact on each other throughout the series, and it makes me so happy to see them working so close like this. It’s such a lovely showcase of the lasting bonds that were forged through every hardship and accomplishment for the characters in this series.

All in all, I couldn’t have wished for a better endgame for Rip. He’s happy, he’s doing what he loves, and he’s got so much support around him. Enough to make a guy cry, genuinely.

Latla, Leila, and Akira!! The fact that Akira has stayed such a close family friend makes me 😭😭 I’ve already talked about it in a previous post but the impact Akira had on Rip and the fact that they’ve stayed so close is so special to me…… And Leila becoming a writer!! That wasn’t on my bingo card but honestly it makes so much sense for her, thinking about it she probably picked up writing as a hobby to keep herself occupied while she was bedridden. And the fact that her and Akira can bond over that as well!! It��s so. It’s so good.

ALSO LATLA GREW HER HAIR BACK OUT !! I’ve been crying over that also, it’s such a significant thing for her character. She initially cut her hair in Loop 100 after Leila had died, which in my personal opinion was a way for her to feel just a bit closer to Leila (I have…. A whole other essay I could write about the pain of losing a twin and how the survivor likely sees them in their reflection all the time but that’s a whole other post). And Latla growing her hair back out after regaining her memories of Loop 100 is very symbolic of her healing, of her not needing that physical tie to Leila because she’s still here!! And Leila cut her hair short again so she looks more like her Loop 100 self, which makes me very emotional too.

And they’re such a cute happy little family !! It looks like Bunny’s hair is kind of a split between Latla’s and Leila’s to show her connection to both of them in this loop 🥹

Overall what a beautiful conclusion to this series. I’m so happy over the endings for each of these characters, and couldn’t ask for more (except my Rip/Latla kiss….. damn you Tozuka for not giving me that in the end).

Let’s continue living, and enjoy what life has to offer!!
