This is a really slow burn fic with a captivating plot and guys.  Dragons.  There’s so many dragons.  This author is also one of my favorites btw I love them.

Summary:  In a world where monstrous dragons terrorize humanity daily, the Garrison trains valiant Knights to slay the evil beasts and defend Earth. But when Knight cadet Lance Espinosa is kidnapped by a strange red dragon who kills its own kind, certain truths are revealed...and so are the true monsters.

Dirty Laundry by Anonymous

Words: 85,042 Smut: there’s a heated makeout scene or two but no actual smut Completed: yes

If you haven’t read this do you even ship Klance?  It’s the fake dating fic to top all fake dating fics.  It’s so sweet and feely you’ll cry buckets and it’s also incredibly funny.  I’ve probably read it like 5 times.  Kinda slow burn kinda not?  Internalized homophobia and homophobia from family warnings.

Summary: "Two whole months of free laundry in exchange for two weeks of being my fake boyfriend. Deal?” Keith hesitated for a moment. Was this really worth it? Hardly. Lance was an asshole, and he wasn’t sure what fake dating would entail. But, free laundry was free laundry, right? “Alright, it’s a deal.”  Or: Lance makes the mistake of telling his Mom he has a boyfriend coming home with him for Christmas. Keith makes the mistake of agreeing to be Lance's 'fake boyfriend'.

Ignorance is Bliss by YouAreInAComaWakeUp (Nikanaiko)

This is probably the number one most emotional fic I’m gonna list here.  There’s ghosts guys and that means characters I hold dear to my heart are dead so warning there.  Pretty sure I was sobbing through multiple chapters.  Real slow burn, but the build up is so worth it especially with how amazing the plot is.  I’ve got quotes from this fic hanging on my wall rn that’s how fantastic the writing is.  Suicide and internalized homophobia warnings.

Summary:As it turns out, learning that your house is haunted makes the ghosts a lot more aggressive. Who knew?  Ah, well. At least one of them is hot. And he's the less-evil one, too, so that's always a plus.

This is kinda a texting fic?  So lots of bants and comedy, mostly Lance cracking jokes and Keith being done with his life.  It’s a really cute fluffy thing.  Depression, car crash, nightmares, and mentions of suicide warnings

Summary: (4:07) okay, but considr this, and hear me out here (4:08) so like, a photobooth u can do with ur pets like there’ll be lil costumes that u can dress them up in, and u can do liek, period costumes and shit with them (4:09) omg, can u imagine, u and ur cat/dog, and theyre in a lil 1800s dress and one of those lace umbrella things omg so cute(4:15) Why the FUCK are you texting me at four in the morning with this— Keith is texted by accident by some idiot one day, and honestly he's not even sure why he responds. Or why he keeps responding. Yet somehow he finds himself drawn in, and okay, so maybe this fool is mildly entertaining after all. Who would've thought.

True Love or Something by DeerstalkerDeathFrisbee

Words: 188,626 Smut: no Completed: kinda??

This is more of a collection of short stories based around Keith, Lance, and the gang than an actual plot filled fic and normally I don’t like that sort of thing, but I’m in love with this because it’s so funny and cute and despite it having 37 parts and counting, it doesn’t get boring or tedious at all.  There’s a couple angsty parts especially regarding Keith’s Tragic Backstory but it’s all around just amazing.  

Summary: “So that was…” “If you say painless I’m shoving you into another snowdrift.” “Okay, that’s fair. But you got a lollipop!” “That you stole from pediatrics.” “I’m a very good date.”  Lance accidentally crashes into his new neighbor in front of their mailboxes and somehow ends the night with a very attractive (and slightly concussed) date.

I normally wouldn’t recommend unfinished fics, especially ones that haven’t been updated in over a year but I honestly just really like this one.  The smut is top notch and there’s plot, fluff, and angst in there as well.  I really like it. 

Summary:  Lance can't stand the captain of the football team…so why is he having sex with him?

I Swear to You by AlyxRae

Words: 123,991 Smut: no Completed: yes

Bodyguard AU!!!  Altean Prince Lance with Galra Bodyguard Keith is literally my favorite thing ever I love it.  This fic gave me whiplash with the amount of times everything went from nice and happy to death and destruction in a heart beat it’s crazy.  Least to say, lots of angst.

Summary: With the destruction of their home planet, the remaining Galra are forced to take refuge with the kind Alteans. Much darker plans begin to take shape and a young Galra solider is made the bodyguard of the Altean Prince, with orders to kill him when the time is right. However, the charming prince manages to capture the Galra's heart and ends up being captivated by the solider in return.The prince and the bodyguard are thrown into perilous adventures, all the while trying to stay together and keep each other safe.

Shadow of the Past and Ghost of the Future by wittyy_name and Zizzani

Words: 75,120 (GoF) 83,198 (SoP) Smut: no Completed: no Last Update: Feb 22 2018

These two fics are mirror fics, which is so cool.  Basically Lance gets sent one year into the future and future Lance gets sent back one year.  SoP is from Lance’s POV while he’s in the future and GoF is from Keith’s POV while future Lance is in the past with him.  I really love this fic and I’m always checking in for updates, which come in pairs (one for each fic).  It doesn’t matter which order you read them btw.

Summary: (SoP) When Lance is thrown through time, he finds himself one year in the future, in place of the Lance that should be here.He finds his team to be remarkably familiar, yet distinctly different. They have more scars, a better grip on the whole saving the universe thing, and over a year’s worth of teamwork to bind them together. But the weirdest part? Keith seems to be a lot more touchy with him. Not that he’s complaining… much.The team must try and work out how to reverse the two Lance’s places and restore them to their original timelines. But despite the fact that they’re still his friends, Lance can’t help but feel a little out of place among a team that’s been through so much with a Lance that just isn’t him. And it doesn’t help that the team is on edge around him, refusing to tell him anything for fear of influencing and changing the past. Things get even more complicated when they have to rely on the team in the past to complete the switch, leaving Lance to little more than sit, wait, and attempt to fill in his future self’s shoes. 

(GoF) When Lance is thrown through time, his future self from one year ahead is transported to the past in his place.This Lance is faster, stronger, and markedly more mature. Not only that, but he's distinctly more intuitive about his teammates and A LOT more touchy with Keith.The team must try and work out how to reverse the two Lance's places and restore them to their original timelines. Things only get more complicated when the Future Lance can't seem to remember where he was when the switch happened, and he refuses to reveal anything about his own time for fear of influencing the team's decisions.

The Hurricane In His Veins by magisterpavus

So this is actually Shklance because I don’t have enough recs for this ship to make it it’s own post and this fic is honestly just really really good.  It’s probably my favorite out of everything here.  It’s a vampire AU and I love it so much.  The plot is incredible (the author should publish a book tbh it’s that good I’d buy it), there are some really cute moments, and it’s goddamn hilarious.  There’s the perfect combination of angst, smut, and fluff and I’ve read this about 10 times since I discovered it a couple months ago.  I suggest it even if you don’t ship Shklance tbh it’s that good.

Summary: It’s the summer after high school graduation, and Lance, Hunk, and Pidge are spending three months together in Pidge’s sleepy California hometown, Rosewood, before they all go their separate ways in life. It’s supposed to be fun and relaxing, filled with long days at the beach and even longer nights playing video games; a last hurrah with Lance’s best friends.But when one of Pidge’s ridiculous cryptid searches leads the trio to a mysterious pair of vampires in the woods and the web of magic and murder that they’re entangled in, the summer gets a lot more complicated…and more dangerous than they could’ve imagined.

it was classic whump ya know???? it threw me back to those days, oof, and it was really enjoyable! 

well not enjoying the pain of the character, but, ya know, YA KNOW!! It was a good read!! I fucking loved all of their concern and how heartbreaking the team was and gosh, oooh gosh, my poor heart.

Characters with a main focus:

Keith wins (duh) but also I wrote a lot of Shiro this year, and a couple times in his POV! That was a fun change bc while I feel like I've gotten pretty solidly into writing characters like Lance and Keith, I'd never really thought about writing from Shiro's perspective and I really enjoyed it. I also really enjoyed getting into writing new characters like Krolia and Ryan.

Specifics:

Best/Worst Title?

Best: Dear Shadow, Alive and Well / by any other name

Worst: lead us into battle and I'll lead you in a dance. (I could have done so. much. better.)

Best/Worst first line?

Best: After what feels like an eternity running, Keith finds waiting to be a completely foreign idea. (from i'll be your sky).

This line is the foundation of this fic - that Keith, who has spent the last year caught up in the war against the galra and now can do nothing but wait to go forward. I hope it embodies the fic as well as I think it does.

Worst: Getting hit by a car is not how Keith wants to start his day, but sometimes that’s just how things go. (from Send Your Cutest Delivery Boy) I just..... don't understand why this fic took off lmao it's SO JANKEY

General Questions:

Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?

I wrote WAY more than I thought I would!! I'm still reeling from the fact that people actually like my stuff and it's helped me keep up my creative drive.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year?

The fact that I wrote Beyond Good And Evil fic is still kind of hilarious to me, mostly because that fandom is TINY. Pairing-wise I could never have predicted Ryance because Ryan didn't exist last year, but I never expected to love them as much as I do now. I'm also surprised that Shance became a huge favourite of mine! I liked pairing them off before I officially shipped them but they shot up to my top 5 ships pretty damn fast.

What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.

Nova. It marked one exact year of me beginning the foray back into writing (which I had been blocked on for almost three years) and fanfic, which I had been out of longer. I poured a lot of my soul into that fic and dedicated a lot of time into making it into the story I envisioned. It's proof that I love what I do and that I can bounce back from hard times in my life, no matter how long it takes.

Okay, NOW your most popular story.

Lead Us Into Battle!! I was SO surprised that it shot up the popularity charts but I couldn't be happier. The fact that people have referred to it as "a fave", added it to fic rec lists, and even drew freaking fan art of it is unbelievable to me. The fact that my first Shance fic was so embraced by the fandom warms my heart.

Story most underappreciated by the universe?

My HZD Sheith au. It contains some of my favourite lines and moments, plus that good platonic Kallura. The fact that HZD seems to be kind of a rare fandom is probably to blame.

Story that could have been better?

Send Your Cutest Delivery Boy. I literally wrote it in an hour lmao

Sexiest story?

Nova wins by default, being the only story that contains even a reference to sexytimes lmao. Sometimes I remember that I wrote and posted the phrase

How was the sex? Hot. Heavy. Poetic. Like getting crushed in the folding mechanisms of a rogue sofa bed.

Saddest story?

Nova and It Will Come Back are probably tied. One's realistic depression, the other is Pacific Rim backstory angst. You take your pick.

Most fun?

Both my crossover installments. Combining the universes of HZD and Voltron, or Pacrim and Voltron have both been really fun and I plan to continue with both series, adding more characters and fics as we roll into 2019!

Story with single sweetest moment?

I can't pick, so I have two:

Lance can’t help it; he laughs and brings his hand up to tangle in Keith’s hair. He knocks their foreheads together gently. “It’s not like you didn’t know,” he says softly. (from Nova)

The answer had come tumbling out of Keith before he’d even processed what he was going to say; “I’ll save you every time, and then some. As many times as it takes.” (from Sun and Shadow)

Hardest story to write?

All of them tbh. I still find it hard to put myself out there and I beat myself up for not finishing or abandoning WIPs a lot. Every published fic I have on my ao3 is victory achieved with time and effort (and probably some crying lmao). Unofficially it's my upcoming piece for Orion. Because it's a zine piece I really struggled to make it reach the high standards I had set, but one that I'm especially proud that I wrote.

Easiest/most fun story to write?

Once I got the ball rolling on my pacrim au the words came FAST. Especially in It Will Come Back - I wrote furiously at 3am to the tune of about 4000 words over one weekend. Considering I usually squeak out maybe 300, that's A LOT.

Did any stories shift your perceptions of the characters?

My Shiro POV pieces absolutely did. In writing him this year I really embraced his character and got to nail down some of my own interpretation of him, especially in Lead Us Into Battle. It helps that in that fic, he gets to be a leader but also has the tables turned on him. It pushed me to love his character even more, when last year he was kind of a rare bird on my blog.

Most overdue story?

Hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh you can't ask me, a known fic killer, this. I wanna finish i'll be your sky this year.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?

I applied for zines!!! With standards and expectations and the possibility of rejection! And what I got out of the experience was an exercise in followthrough above all else. I had an outline that I stuck with and people to help me hash it out, and I'm incredibly grateful for the experience and the friends I made in the process. Shout out to the mods and contributers of Orion, you guys helped me grow 💖

What are your fic writing goals for next year?

• START AND FINISH A MULTICHAPTER. I have two main ideas kicking around that I want to see realized.

• Apply for more zines

• Finish my WIP series and leave no ends untied

• Either revive or gain the courage to delete Riven lmao. I just don't know how to continue right now, but maybe this year I'll find the solution.

Is there a good rec list of safe eastern Asian Klance fanartists to follow, please, for people who don't want to support antis or anti apologists?

Yes but a lot of them also draw NSFW art, so We’re not exactly sure if We should rec the list or not.

Eastern Asian artists sometimes keep their NSFW content on privatter or private twitter accounts, but some of the VLD ones have been deleting their nsfw twitter accounts lately because of reposters.

Kind of a douchey thing to do - convince an artist to trust you & get permission to follow their private account only to plaster their work all over Instagram.

You could probably try searching up “shklance” in the meanwhile - a lot of them will draw klance art, too. (Don’t forget to blacklist the nsfw tag if you’re looking for PG art only.)

I do believe you are the best one to ask this. I could really use some Happy Keith Fic recs. Like a teensy bit of drama or angst is okay as long as it is very quickly fixed so Keith doesn't suffer much. Pairing matters not, any, all, or none (tho I am an utter romance slut) but I'm hoping for fics where Keith is sort of the focus (Lance holds my heart but I want to get to know Keith better & every Klance & Shklance fic I've read Lance as the main focus or has Keith as Sasuke lite) can u help?

So instead! I’m going to give you some blogs that I love and adore that do a lot with Keith -and their respective AO3s- I’ve read all the fics from each of these people, and a few of them even post Keith drabbles and analytical stuff that’s so much fun to read even if its not technically a fic.

@kcgane and their AO3 - lots of quality Keith stuff there, ranging from gen to Sheith to Keitor. All their stuff tends to be Keith focused and its wonderfully written. I’ve binge read their works several times. It does tend to be on the more… angstier sides at times, but I love them so like… Yeah

@allawander  and their AO3 -Alla, I love you, a lot, but where tf is your writing tag so I can find your AO3 ik you have one- asgf okay, idk, look at their My Headcannons tag. It has a lot of good stuff, some occasional angst and nsfw but like. Its good, they’re good. A lot of Sheith and Keith x BoM Members stuff -and I love it-

@bosstoaster and their AO3 - Lots of quality… everything, if I’m being honest. They don’t write just Keith, a lot more Shiro, but their stuff is really good, and details their interactions pretty well. Mix of angst and fluff, depends.

@scrawlers and I can’t remember if they have an AO3 so have two links instead: Keith Tag and Fic Fix tag. Fic Fix has a mix from other fandoms, and keith tag has other stuff besides fics, but its still a good read through. I like their take on Keith a lot, and they do pretty good dissections as well. More Keitor oriented than anything else, and A++.

@arahir and their AO3 - Looooots of Sheith, and all really good interactions. I’m pretty sure I’ve read most of their stuff on tumblr -idk if I’ve gone through their AO3 to cross comment… Need to do that later if I haven’t- and it tends to be fluffy, decent amount of angst not horribly so; def had a few really good laughs from them.

@noromojustkeith has started a collection of Keith centric stuff that you can find through this tag, so taking a look through there might give you more results.

And like, there’s a lot more people, probably, in fact I can guarantee I’ve forgotten someone, with a keith centric stuff, but yeah… Remembering things is not my strong suit, especially names, so remembering what blogs do what is… difficult, as well as fic names. Lords just… names in general. I’m about to start rambling so I’ma stop now ajghasg

Can you recommend any klance fics?.

I can definitely recommend lots of klance fics. As in, lots lots. I am not completely sure what you are looking for/what you have already read though, so I’m just gonna list some of my favorite authors with some of my favorite fics. 

Quick additional info: there are no explicit fics on here, though some are rated mature. All of the stories have klance as their only ship but since I intended this to be author recs rather than fic recs, I will mention what kinds of other ships appear in other fics.

This author’s writing is amazingly smooth and I particularly enjoy their Keith. Crossroads was my favorite fic for a long, long time until I found some others that were just as good :D [this author also wrote some nsfw and sheith]

I honestly don’t know why I like this author so much? The style of writing is really, really good and I love how everyone’s friendships get portrayed. The author is also pretty good at writing conflicted emotions. [they wrote some shallura and shidge]

This author is amazing at writing angst. It just always hits you right in the feels. Like damn. I adore their writing so much but ho boy I was too scared to click the one Chara Death fic they wrote. I couldn’t do that to myself, the two longer OS that I listed here already gave me enough feelings. [they wrote some shallura]

Trashness

This author writes Keith’s and Lance’s interactions really nicely. They also never fail to make me smile/laugh with their fics, they are all really cute!! Lots of light heartened stuff here.

I really really really enjoy this author’s Lance!! He feels incredibly in character and I swear I can see him act in canon just like he does in the fics. Their style of writing is fluent, nice and adapts really well to the situation.

[I also really enjoy witty_name’s and freshia’s fics, both of whom usually put background shallura into their fics though so I couldn’t list them here]

I am totally down to talk about my love for both ships and how I can appreciate their differences.

This is gonna get long so I’ll stash it under a cut.

I’ll start with Klance. I honestly did not ship Keith and Lance together at first. I just could not see it. They clearly annoyed the shit out of each other and even though there was massive improvement in their relationship through season 1, there is still some animosity in season 2. I had to read a few fics that had actual plot and basically built their relationship from the ground up. I’m a sucker for a good enemies to friends to lovers trope too so that wasn’t a problem. Keith and Lance are…not shallow but far more lighthearted in their relationship. There’s a friendly competitiveness and plenty of banter that lends itself to affectionate teasing. I like that even with the competition, they still support each other and acknowledge strengths and weaknesses. I would love to see them become dependent on each other in season 3. Reassuring each other that they are both vital and valued. I crave that and I will be so disappointed if it doesn’t happen. I want Lance to be Keith’s right-hand man if Keith does in fact end up piloting Black. I could also see Lance piloting Black and if so, Keith should step up.

As for Sheith, when I started watching Voltron, I immediately latched onto Sheith. Right off the bat, you get that they have a history. It’s unclear what it is yet but that shit is deep. Because I am a hopeless romantic but incapable of love for the time being, I have a hardcore appreciation for the deep feels and the implicit trust that comes with longstanding friendships/relationships. Anytime shit goes down, Shiro and Keith seem to be each other’s first priorities. There’s a certain softness that they have together that isn’t shared with any of the others. There’s vulnerability that neither of them holds back. They can read each other and pick up easily on how they’re feeling. That comes with caring enough to purposely tune yourself in to someone’s behavior until it’s second nature to recognize it. They’re just…ride or die. All of this combined with the heavier, darker feel between them just does it for me. But I tend to prefer that kind of content. There’s more substance to it in my opinion so I find it more satisfying.

I enjoy and appreciate both (oh the joys and inner peace of being a multishipper) but I love them for different reasons. Sometimes I want Keith and Lance’s witty banter and “I can’t stand you sometimes but now that we’re together, I can’t imagine it any other way” and other times I want Shiro and Keith’s inner conflict of “I need to remain objective and focused in this battle for the survival of the universe” v “this person is everything and I can’t lose him again.” If you can’t get into Sheith, you can’t get into it. Not everyone enjoys the same dynamic which is a-okay. Difference in opinions makes life interesting. Shance and Shklance and Hance and even Heith are good shit too. But again, I like all the little differences in dynamics of relationships so. Yeah.

As for fic recs, I don’t believe I’ve read any non-romantic Sheith so I tragically have nothing to offer for now. If any of my followers know of anything they’d like to rec, feel free to link it in the comments. I’m curious about reading some myself though just to see. Why not? I didn’t sleep much last night and had a long day at work so that’s not on my to-do list tonight but if you wanna message me at some point, I’m totally happy to discuss further and send links to fics I stumble upon you might be into of any pairing.
