Okita’s lover
This is a transcript from a documentary.
Continued from https://shinsengumi-archives.tumblr.com/post/190584515996/nhk-%E6%AD%B4%E5%8F%B2%E7%A7%98%E8%A9%B1%E3%83%92%E3%82%B9%E3%83%88%E3%83%AA%E3%82%A2%E3%81%A7%E3%81%99
And now let's find out everything about Okita's lover. Okita-san lived in Kyoto at between the ages of 22 and 27. It was here that he lived during the prime of his life. Perhaps not without love.
Kondo Isami's son-in-law, Kondo Yugoro-san states that: “In Kyoto, he had a love affair with the doctor’s daughter that brought tears.” こ の 娘 の こ と と な る と, 涙 を 落 し て 語 つ た も の で す.
In this phrase I don’t really understand who cried for whom, and when. Everywhere they usually write that the girl was sobbing. In the original text, it sounds like Okita was pouring tears for her ?! This whole thing seems to be from this book .
If he shed tears, it must have been unhappy love.
In any case, this reveals a side of Okita during an unknown episode of his life. Regarding the love of Okita, there is another witness testimony. (Koenji) This is Koenji in Kyoto, in the Shimogyoku area. This temple is closely connected with Shinsengumi - many members are buried here. On the territory of the temple there is a tombstone on which a female kaimyo is carved. On the side there is an inscription “Relative of Okita”. (According to the records in the old temple books, this tombstone was placed in the last years of Okita's life) It is entirely possible that the Okita mentioned here is none other than Soji. This woman died in Keio 3 (1867). Shinsengumi at that time were still in Kyoto. We listen to one of the priests of the temple. (Priest of Koenji, Nakajima Takanori) As for this relative, Okita apparently does not have relatives in Kyoto. If you look at the date of death of this girl, and take into account that Okita lived nearby, naturally an association with Okita Soji arises. But a woman’s tombstone is not yet proof of a love affair! Shinsengumi researcher Kikuchi Akira-san puts forward his assumptions about the possible relationship of this girl and Okita-san. The evidence can be seen in their kaimyos
“If you compare the kaimyo of Okita Soji and the kaimyo of this relative one by one, then it turns out that they have a lot in common, and maybe not by chance. When comparing it, it’s clear that both of them have characters with the same meaning. ” (Tomb of Okita Soji, Tokyo, Sensyoji) (Tomb of a relative of Okita, Kyoto, Koenji) Kaimyo Okita: 賢 - KEN - Wisdom 光 - KO: - Shine 仁 - JIN; NIN - Humanity 明 - MEI; MYO; MIN - Clear 道 - DO: - Kaimyo Road "cousins": 真 - SHIN - True 明 - MEI; MYO; MIN - Clear 照 - SHO: - Shine 貞 - TEI - Chastity, virtue 相 - SO; SHO: - Mutual Perfectly identical hieroglyphs: 明 - clear Hieroglyphs with the same meaning: 光 - shine and 照 - shine 道 and 導 (lead, direct, guide; show the way) Hieroglyphs with a similar sound: 賢 - KEN and 真 - SHIN, "So it was probably done deliberately. Since the “relative” died earlier, Okita Soji, who died after her, specially came up with almost the same kaimyo. ” In general, they are similar to each other in the way that kaimyo of spouses are often similar. In that case, Kikuchi-san, tell me directly what you think about this girl? “As for the “relative of Okita”, I think she could very well be the unofficial wife of Okita Soji.” Perhaps Okita-san in his own kaimyo immortalized the memory of this girl. In a series of constant battles, far from the native lands of Kyoto, perhaps it was she who was the joy in Okita’s heart. Thanks to various facts, we now have an idea about the real image of Okita, however, there are no photos left from which you can see his true appearance, which is a pity. ___________________________ Kondo Yugoro (1851-1933) is the second son of Miyagawa Otogoro, Kondo's older brother. Since 1876 - the husband of Tama (the daughter of Kondo Isami), and the heir to the Tennen Rishin Ryu style, etc. In Japanese Wiki, it is written that the kaimyo of Okita is 賢 光 院 仁 誉 明道 居士, that is, it is somewhat longer than what is in the transcript, and in my opinion it is more accurate, because usually kaimyo are that long. The first pair of characters is most likely Masamitsu, the last two are definitely Koji (the Buddhist "pious layman"). "An illegitimate wife," is that what they call it? Literally that’s what it translates to from Japanese, but in Russian maybe it translates to "illegal"? But I like "illegitimate" more ...

Are you coming to Japan during summer time?  You can enjoy Japan any time but if you happen to come here in summer, there are several things it’s better to know beforehand.  Here are several tips.
1. Be Aware of the Heatwaves in Summer Time.
This year (2019), it becomes extraordinary hot in Europe and in the US in summer time.  It was unbelievable when the temperature of Paris was over 40 degrees while it was below 30 degrees in Tokyo.  But that was before the rainy season in Tokyo ends.  Now the real summer time comes to Tokyo and finally it gets really hot.
It is quite normal in Tokyo that the temperature gets over 30 degrees in summer time.  It is still not very surprising when it becomes over 35 degrees.  But at such a time, there is a danger of surfing from the heatstroke.  What’s worse, it is quite humid in summer in Tokyo.
If you travel in mountain side, it may be cool in the morning.  Maybe the temperature is something like 20 degrees.  But even in the mountains, unless it is extremely high over 2,000 meters, it becomes very hot in the afternoon.  So you have to be very careful.
A view from the scree near the peak of Asahidake Mountain
Always bring a hat with you and don’t forget a bottle of water.
  2. Avoid Driving in the Middle of August.  Shinkansen, too.
August is when people enjoy summer holidays.  So wherever you go, there will be lots of people.  But especially in the middle of August, everybody in Japan moves around from north to south.  This is because during 13 – 15 August, many people go back to their hometowns for the family reunion.  This period of time is called “O Bon” when Japanese people welcome our ancestors to come back to our world.  This is based on the Buddhism custom and many Japanese people still follow the tradition.  As a result, highways are always packed at this time of the year and Shinkansen is also unbelievably congested.  It is better to avoid moving around at this time.  And sometimes, shops are closed during O Bon.
  3. Rainy Season Might Last Long or End Early.
We have a rainy season in Japan except for Hokkaido.  If it is in Tokyo, it starts in early June and ends in mid July.  But it depends on the year and the region.  In Okinawa, it starts as early as May and ends before July.  Last year, it ended at the end of June in Tokyo.  But this year, the rainy season in Tokyo lasted until this week.
During the rainy season, sometimes it rains really hard.  So if you travel in Japan during the rainy season, get ready with your rain gear.
Sengen Taisha
  4. When Does Typhoon Come?
There are typhoons during summer time.  Usually the high season of typhoons is between the mid August and the mid October.  The routes vary from time to time.  But when typhoons come to Japan, it often hits the southern parts of Japan.  Having said this, it does not mean it does not come to the north.  So it’s better to follow the weather forecast.
  5. It’s a Festival Season.
Summer time is a festival season.  You can enjoy many kinds of festivals throughout Japan.  One of the most famous and popular festivals in Japan is Nebula Matsuri Festival in Aomori Prefecture.  During the festival, people carry large floats around the town.

You can find many firework festivals in summer time, too.  Among them, the firework in Sumida River is very popular and has a long history.  According to Wikipedia, the history of this firework goes back to 1732.

Here are the information of summer festivals in Tokyo.  If you have a chance to travel through the archipelago, try to find the festivals here.

Water-Pouring Festival in Tomioka Hachimangu
Torches along the street of Shrine Town

September 22-24 2018,
Went to Tokyo during the long weekend, took the night bus there and actually managed to get some sleep which was amazing. Was raining right before I had to leave my house to go to Tokyo so had to walk all the way to the station in my poncho and ugly Daiso plastic shoe covers ugGHHH
Sept 22
Arrived bright and early in the morning at Shinjuku station and went to Blue Bottle cafe. Managed to navigate the subway (didn’t get too lost this time) and met up with some friends at Koenji. Tons of vintage stores, and found one that was called ‘Slut’ which was amusing to say the least. Had Thai food for lunch and the best red curry I’ve ever had so good omg. Headed to Shimokitazawa afterwards which is also known to have great vintage shops, a bit on the pricier side though. For dinner we went to Shibuya and got Lobster rolls. First time seeing the Shibuya crossing (at night too which was unreal) and I was acting like such a tourist lmao my Tokyo friends were lowkey embarrassed. I ended up staying at a hostel that was like 20$/ night and seemed super sketchy but it was pretty decent. It was bunk bed style and all I had was a mattress which honestly was more than enough.
Sept 23
Met up with an old friend that I made back in 2015 when I studied in Beijing over the summer! We hit Harajuku, Meiji Shrine, and Shibuya and got kinda sick of all the shopping and how that’s basically all there is to do. We bought lucky charms at Meiji though which I want to start collecting but man....they are   p r i c y. Had hotpot at a Thai chain store for dinner and man, hotpot after a long day of walking is ~saikoooooo~
Sept 24
Last day in Tokyo, went to Ikebukuro to check out their infamous animate and was kinda disappointed bc of the lack of merch for anime I liked like they only had like 5 things for One Piece come on. For lunch met with up with friends and had Korean food at Shin-Okubo (Korea town). Told my friends about my sad adventure to Ikebukuro and she suggest we visit Jump World in Ikebukuro. Bruh, best decision ever I love Jump animes the most and they had so many cool galleries. Around 6pm, my other Akita friend and I jumped on the Shinkansen and went back home....with the dread of waking early for work tmr morning heavy over our heads

Craftrock Brewpub The Bottom Line
Usually we give a new brewery or brewpub some time before trying out their beers, and Craftrock Brewpub has the potential to do well, as long as they introduce some variety in their beers and improve them – hopefully with some feedback they will. The bar itself is a bit of style over substance too – even though it felt like a big space, the closeness of the tables felt a little claustrophobic at times, definitely a run over from the Craft Beer Market (CBM) influence with everyone rubbing elbows. Moreover, there is also a table charge on top. However, without trying to be all negative, there are some positives to Craftrock Brewpub that will get me going back again once they’ve had time to work on their system. The whole place is non-smoking and the prices also include tax, and there is also some free WiFi on top.
Craftrock Brewpub The Full Review
So what do you do when you have a successful chain of craft beer bars in Tokyo, with another one in Osaka, and youre looking for new ideas? Well you close a couple of the stores down (Jimbocho Terrace and Koenji) then try to open up a brewery, then realise that perhaps a brewpub in this day and age would be a better idea – make your own beer then sell it to other bars in the chain. That’s exactly what the owners of Craft Beer Market, a company called Steady Works, have done with Craftrock Brewpub – a venue that works as a brewery, a bar, and also a music space too for concerts and performances in the heart of Tokyo.
Craftrock Brewpub, or to give it its full name Craftrock Brewpub & Live (urgh hate the usage of that word), is a brewpub located in the Nihonbashi area of Tokyo that is better known for its rows of upmarket department stores and antenna shops, than craft beer. The bar is situated in the Coredo bulding, which also doubles up as an office space and a large food court across various floors. Craftrock Brewpub itself has space for about 150people inside, all seated at various tables and along the counter, though there is a small standing area that wasn’t in use on the day we went. The main problem we have with the seating at these various iterations of the CBM chain is that your continually rubbing elbows with someone elses or someones back – it would be nice to have just a little bit of space to drink. I guess they try to cram more people in to drink more and get more of that special table charge of ¥300 but don’t worry, if you’re standing then there’s no table charge, but there’s no way to know until you go if you can stand or not. There is some free Wifi though with passwords posted around the bar.
As we’ve already mentioned, Craftrock Brewpub is also the main vehicle for Craftrock Brewing, and with 14 taps of beer on, there is a heavy leaning towards their own beers, with the rest of the lineup consisting of a mixture of domestic and imported craft beer. The beers come in two sizes: the Craftrock Brewing beers are priced at half pint (250ml) for ¥600 and pint (473ml) for ¥900 while the guest beers are half pint (250ml) from ¥680 and pint (473ml) for ¥980 – so clearly it’s better to drink the in-house beers. There is no happy hour nor any beer flights on – a shame as it would have been good to try a variety of their beers rather than drinking lots of halves. The in-house beers are ok, though we suspect the head-brewer, Ryo Suzuki who has experience working at DevilCraft, should improve the beers as time goes on.
The food at Craftrock Brewpub is a little rough around the edges though – mixed service with portion sizes that vary – another remnant of the CBM chain – cheap beers with slightly pricier, smaller portioned food to get the money in. The loaded fries did look good. Hopefully the service will improve too as the staff get trained and used to it. All of the menus are both in Japanese and in English with some of the staff also being bilingual too.
