yo I need y’all’s opinion on the Sheith vs Klantis (or just Klance) discourse way back then??? I personally think Shiro and Keith’s relationship is platonic but I would actually like to hear other people’s view points of Sheith whether they shipped Klance or Sheith or none.

I’m relatively new to this fandom (I started consuming vld media in late 2022), and god even I know the fandom way back then was crazy.. people definitely took it too far.

Also Sheith isn’t incest??? Maybe it’s weird for some people (including me) but c’mon they aren’t even related 😭😭😭

i think people misunderstood me a little with the other ask lol. by saying "this stuff didn't happen in harry potter fandom" i meant no one was judging people for engaging in smut content. not that i know of anyway. i myself have read so many harry x ginny smut that holy water cannot save me lmao

on the byler tag some uers like to offer many creative variations of the word creep to refer to us, some of them being "we watched them grow up" (i can see why this can make some ppl uncomfy and i respect that as long as you don't force your personal opininon as the correct and only one) "these are teenagers you are sexualizing when you're an adult"

those things also apply to harry potter but i never came across anyone trying to cancel people the same way puritan bylers do.

I know what you meant, Nonnie!! We were just responding to the fact that another Byler somewhere in the tag did in fact argue that sexualizing teen characters didn't happen in other fandoms such as HP/PJO/etc when it very clearly did.

Not to be like *shakes fist* kids these days but I do think the anti mindset is a much more recent thing. If I'm correct in my fandom history, it really broke out with Sheith vs Klance in the Voltron days. But it's also just younger folks who don't know how to be in fandom, or folks who are mostly normies delving into Ao3 and then being surprised when the website for "freaks" has freaky shit on it. Or folks who are used to algorithms that put things on their feed instead of them having to curate their own feeds. It doesn't help that Stranger Things is a lot of people's first real fandoms.

IDK, it's a lot of factors, probably. I grew up in the Supernatural fandom where a large portion of fans were Wincest shippers and I learned very early how to filter tags, what ship-and-let-ship was, don't like don't read etc. I don't feel like many in the Byler fandom have really learned those things.

Also small rant… ppl wishing he got killed off bcs of a few comments he made when he was like 14 years old at most? Bffr 😭 wishing for the death of a character for things they said as an angsty 14 year old vs claiming a literal geneva convention violator’s “redemption arc” was “ruined” is kind of insane lmfao (sorry lotor likers i dont fw him 😞) like come on guys. Also its very clear how much he’s changed like of all the characters in the show i would argue his redemption arc was the most effective. He was shown to be golden boy, super respectful of chain of command and a stickler for rules. So for him to go out of his way to disobey direct orders, break the rules, and not only put his life on the line but the lives of 3 others and possibly more to sneak Hunk to see his family, is actually like insane. Even if you disregard my jaith headcanons, the fact he would do that for hunk (and by extension, keith) is more than enough of a redemption arc imo.

I kind of wonder if some of the stuff I remember is still around (that voltron list some adult ran where she and several teens reporting Sheith shippers to the FBI? tier 1: if you ask ANYONE on tumblr, they will guaranteed know what these are

klance: popular ship between voltron’s lance and keith. trended at number one on fandom polls for genuinely, at minimum, 2 years

giant lions: theyre giant lion mechs that make one big mech

steven yeun voices keith: self explanatory

tumblr fandom: the atrocities of most of these happened directly on tumblr

tier 2: most people on tumblr know of this to some degree

sheith: second biggest ship from the voltron fandom between shiro and keith

galra keith: the highly popular theory that keith was actually part galra that was confirmed in season 2

bex tk: pidge’s va, got into numerous scandals, the most prevalent one being the power bottom keith incident

toxicity from fans: any amount of research into the voltron fandom will let you know EXACTLY what this is talking about

sheith vs klance: the near homicidal warring on tumblr between sheith shippers and klance shippers. to this day, i hate sheith with every bone in my body, although i can now acknowledge that holy shit everything got way too out of hand

dirty laundry: the first well known fic for voltron. it was a fake dating au, the pairing being, to no surprise, klance

the bonding moment: we had a bonding moment! i cradled you in my arms!!

tier 3: you might have to search a bit for this information, but it doesnt take much to find it

glass cupcakes incident: an alleged (and i say alleged bc there was no confirmation of this actually happening iirc) direct assault on the voltron creators wherein a fan of the show sent cupcakes with glass baked into them in order to make klance canon. again, i have no idea if this one is real or not

KICK!:

#socksforsheith: i believe this one is also alleged, but supposedly, sheith shippers were wholeheartedly convinced there was a secret ending to season 8 where shiro and keith were together, and for whatever reason? sent socks to dreamworks? to try and get them? to release the secret season ending? it was very very strange to witness in real time

season 9 in 2021 (although it may have been 2022): there was a scare after a very very blatantly false nerd news site posted there was going to be a season 9. voltron trended for the first time in years as everyone quaked in fear at the prospect of a season 9.

korean keith: very very popular headcanon that keith was korean, as he was voiced by steven yeun, a korean man. 

klance shipper extorting studio mir* (i got the name wrong on my original list): while on a tour of studio mir, the studio that animated for voltron, a fan of the show took a lot of pictures of material for a future season and posted them to twitter as a sort of? hostage situation i guess? to make klance canon. theres a lot of conflicting reports that this was just a sheith shipper posing as a klance shipper to make them look bad, but its never really been confirmed either way iirc

tier 4: this information is more well known in the voltron hemisphere but DOES breach outside of it

klance powered muscles: my favorite copypasta of all time. a multiparagraph spiel from a 30 year old proshipping yaoi enjoyer who used the phrase “klance powered muscles” in the middle of their villain monologue. i still quote it to this day 

klance vs viktuuri: 2016 was a big year for both voltron fans and yuri on ice fans. big enough that, when klance and viktuuri went head to head in a shipping poll on a website that was attempting to find the most popular ship of 2016, it got bot-voted ENORMOUSLY by both sides. the site decided to reset the polls and told both sides if they couldnt behave, another ship would win. despite the fair warning, and both sides attempting desperately to get others to stop bot-voting, the title ended up going to supercorp from supergirl.

whitewashed comic cover: a cover for an official voltron comic where lance and hunk were SEVERELY whitewashed beyond belief. it was later changed after fan outcry

“leave the math to pidge”: another iconic klance quote that ive put much farther down due to the fact that it is not nearly as well known or iconic as the bonding moment

tier 5: this information does not breach outside of voltron fandom spaces

the power bottom keith incident: the aforementioned bex tk was well known for their controversy and engagement with the voltron fandom. their most well known crime was, when told that the comments they made and liked about keith, one of them being about him being a power bottom, who at the time was 18, were completely inappropriate and asked for them to apologize, their response was “keith is 18. shiro is 25. sheith confirmed. power bottom. deal with it.” it very quickly became a meme through fan spaces bc the situation was just so fucking ridiculous 

katie klanced: my beloved. my idol. the one who started it all. she once liked one of my posts and i have never forgotten it. but in all seriousness, shes infamous in voltron spaces for the sheer amount of influence she had in the fandom. the mark they left on klance was truly impressive

shlav: people were getting real sick and tired of having no substantial slash ships with shiro (except for shatt) so they took shiro’s greatest enemy, slav, and formed an entire ship based on it. there was even a subship called shlavion, which was shiro x slav x minion (despicable me). for the most part it was a joke, but id be shocked if there wasnt some people who were serious about it

“move it, shaladin”: this video was a cultural breaking point for voltron fans. the heathers musical parody where artist misterpoof sings of their experiences being slandered for shipping shiro and keith. i was, and still am, a staunch anti-shaladin, but i have to admit. the cover is totally tubular 

alien herpes: during the season 8 allurance goodbye kiss, lance receives altean marks on his face for. some reason. all i can remember was everyone (or maybe just a select group of people) referring to it as alien herpes and like. theyre not necessarily wrong.

leakira: people were PISSED about the s8 ending. literally everyone got fucked over, HARD. so, having to move on but still being super attached to klance, twitter and tumblr created an entirely new series, that im not even sure had a name, that was literally just people drawing redesigns of keith and lance, named akira and leandro, respectively.

tier 6: you either have to be an OG fan or do some SUPER intensive research as a new fan

the klible: written by, to no surprise, a klance fan, the klible was a super intensive 50,000+ words long manifesto as to why klance would eventually be canon written over the course of the show. you can still view it here

i control the paladins: posted at the beginning of tiktok’s popularity, this video showcases 2 cosplays, one being of the witch haggar, and the other being keith. over the course of the video, haggar casts a spell that gives keith not just a maid outfit and cat features such as a tail and ears, but a pair of boobs as well. its just very iconic and still in my camera roll. oo nanana.

the voltron VR video game: looking back, i probably shouldve put this one higher, HOWEVER there is a method to my madness. this game was talked about for a WEEK before it faded into absolute obscurity. everytime someone talks about voltron, they never mention the video game, ever.i feel like im the only one that remembers that game. i feel crazy.

jeremy in LM’s basement: jeremy shada, lance’s va, was well known for, if memory serves, the KL dynamic in a way that fans tended to interpret as that they would end up together. while i have no idea for certain if that was his intent, fans joked that showrunner lauren montgomery was going to lock him in her basement if he kept dropping hints about keith and lance’s “eventual” romance arc

tier 7: you just. you had to be there

the greasy keith movement: a movement to specifically dunk on people who drew and wrote keith as the softest most pathetic babygirl in the world. keith was drawn as a stinky smelly mother fucker who loved cars and not showering and conspiracy theories. the fanon keith that was meant to serve as an antithesis to the OTHER fanon keith. 

keith “gerald” kogane: THIS. THIS IS MY FAVORITE ONE. BETWEEN SEASONS SOMEONE GOT BORED AND LEAKED INFORMATION THAT KEITH’S MIDDLE NAME WAS GERALD. THE FANS EXPLODED AT THIS SUPPOSED LEAK. EVERYONE WAS MAKING FUN OF HIM FOR HIS MIDDLE NAME BEING GERALD. THE SHEER AMOUNT OF TEXTPOSTS REGARDING KEITH’S MIDDLE NAME BEING GERALD WERE INNUMERABLE. IT WAS PEAK VOLTRON

the brony blogs: again, between seasons, fans got super bored and collectively decided to begin making blogs dedicated to the voltron characters being bronies. brony-matt, bronyshiro, bronylance. you name a voltron character, there was 100% a brony blog for them. i think even the bibobi’s had brony blogs.

birth vs. being hatched: youre not going to believe this. but voltron fans got bored again between seasons and decided that they were simply going to start a site-wide tumblr debate over whether keith was born or hatched from an egg. there was keith hatching fanart. 

space ranger partners: probably should have gone in a higher tier but THIS was the epitome of jeremy shada klance moments. he called them “space ranger partners” in one interview and the fans ran with it. say this phrase aloud to give a veteran voltron fan a heart attack 

bonus tier: stuff i forgot (subject to being updated)

the vld-keith and vld-lance rp blogs: i miss them everyday. they posted quotes about each other. nothing was the same after they left

it was sheith vs klance, or some such garbage that nobody could stop fighting over. the ship wars that famously involved the harrassment of the shows writing staff in real life (the horror story of glass being hidden inside cupcakes is from one such instance) so im not surprised that voltron was ground fucking zero for breeding modern fancops and antis

I am convinced that "anti-proship" only exists because people got bored in 2020 and needed something "justifible" to hate since you'd get sent death threats for telling someone their shirt is dirty
