Let me take y'all on a little journey. Lots of pictures, including of my vehicle after an accident so consider yourself warned.
A few years back my dad wanted to do a ghost town tour of central Ontario in November with his jeep club. They did them a few weeks earlier and had a few big groups do this one run, and had decently big groups. My dad had to miss those runs due to work, and when someone asked if there was a team lead willing to take him my dad jumped on the opportunity cuz he really wanted to go. But club rules you can't go out alone, and you can't go with just one team lead and a non member. You have to have a tail gunner.
I also had a jeep, albeit a somewhat older (though as a 2004 it was the newest car I've ever owned) and rather less adventurous one, and had taken it off road before on a club run and was a member, so I qualified, and it sounded interesting so I went along. We took a map with instructions and notes about the tour, and took off. My dad had a CB, as did I, but the rookie with us didnt so his instructions were just to make sure he was between us and we'd get him where he needed to go, and we'd give the tour schpeels at the locations when we got there.
Tumblr media
It was a warm fall day when we left town, but the further north we went the more snow we found. It was only a few degrees below zero (Celsius) and still a bright sunny day, with the sunlight blinding on the fresh fluffy snow. We visited several ghost towns and did the little tour guide thing as we went and we're having a pretty good time. My dog was napping happily in the passenger seat of my car, had some tunes on the radio, driving along long forgotten gravel roads overgrown and snowed over, it was very peaceful and just a very nice drive.
Tumblr media
We visited several ghost towns. Some just looked like old buildings where someone might still live maybe, and some had trees growing out of the middle of buildings, clearly having been abandoned for decades.
Tumblr media
After a while and up a mountain side (this is foothills of the Canadian arm of the Appalachians, so take "mountain" with a grain of salt if you're the type to picture the Rockies when I say mountain), we came to a tree with a doll nailed to it with square nails and we were like 'huh maybe we're just gonna turn around and go back, idk what we're gonna find if we keep going, and we know the path eventually dead ends on private property but we don't know where that property starts' and the sun was getting low in the sky so we figured it was as good a spot as any to turn around.
Tumblr media
So turn around we did, back down the mountain. I was going slow and taking my time, but I lost sight of the group so I was trying to make up distance while not going too fast.
And I wouldn't have been going too fast had there not black ice on the switchback. I managed to make the first turn, and had I not it would have been a solid 50 foot drop straight down a cliff into a dense patch of woods that wasn't visible from the road. I turned a little sharp towards the mountain to avoid sliding off the drop off and tried to correct for the hairpin sharp turn coming up where the ground started to level off a little more...
But I did not make the second turn.
Tumblr media
I hit the snowbank on the up side of the mountain, bounced off a tree in mid air, and then flipped several times in mid air, landed on the roof of my car and flipped several more times before coming to a stop on my tires, sliding a little further on more black ice, hitting a stump, then rolling onto its side where it finally stopped. Somewhere along the way my driver's side window had broken, and suddenly I was laying sideways, one arm touching the cold snow through broken glass, the sound of crushing sheet metal still ringing in my ears.
I panicked for a moment before spotting my dog where he had been thrown, tucked into the passenger foot well, and grabbed him checking him over for injuries. He was fine. Quite shook up and very confused, but fine. I tried calling on the radio but nothing. The CB antenna must have been flung off at some point, after all it's only magnetic. But no signal, which means I couldn't call for help. How long would it be till they realize I wasn't still behind them?
I carefully extracted myself and got out of the vehicle to assess the situation. I was fine, a couple nicks and scrapes, mostly acquired by trying to crawl through broken glass to get out of the vehicle, but I was fine.
I didn't have a heavy winter coat with me however and the temperature was rapidly dropping. I didn't feel the cold yet because I was in shock, but I knew that the one blanket I had wouldn't do much if we were stuck for a while.
Tumblr media
The bumper had ripped off when I hit the first snowbank
And everything else hit right between the airbag bumpstops so the airbags never deployed
Tumblr media
The engine was crushed in and downwards, and because of crumple zones and safety redundancies, the cabin remained intact. I was ok because my car was built with safety in mind. But the sun was setting fast, and I was still stranded without a way out.
Thankfully they had stopped when they saw I wasn't behind them, and when they didn't get a response on the radio they went back to find me. I don't know exactly how long I was there waiting because I was in shock and have time blindness anyways, but I know it was no more than maybe 15-20 minutes.
They arrived as the sun dipped below the horizon and just as they arrived some hunters emerged out of the woods from the other direction, having heard the accident in the woods on the other side of the mountain and came looking for me. Between them and my dad they were able to get the car right side up.
Tumblr media
I tried to find my phone but I couldn't find it. It had been plugged in and must have been thrown out of the window. I went up the hill to where the first impact happened and finally found my phone, and the first thing I did was take a picture from where I was standing where I found it.
Tumblr media
The dark spot on the snowbank to the right was the first point of impact. The car waaaay down at the bottom of the hill was where it came to rest.
Tumblr media
I have no problem attributing the fact that I am still alive today to someone being forced to adhere to certain safety standards when designing and building my vehicle. Had those people not been forced to adhere to those standards, some of those redundancies would have been missing and I and my dog would both have probably been seriously injured or killed or at the very least had permanently life altering injuries. It took me a while to get back to driving (though I've not driven in over a year due to an unrelated brain injury) and I still have anxiety and panic attacks even as a passenger when the weather's rough, especially during winter.
But it could have been so much worse, and I directly attribute my continued safety to rich dudes being bullied into making things safe cuz gods know the fuckers won't do it of their own volition if they can cut costs and get away with it.
Vehicle safety standards should be the law across the board. Cuz yeah some idiot will get hurt when his lump of metal that isn't build to keep him safe has an accident, but it'll also make accidents more dangerous for everyone else. I can pick my cars, but lbr I'm broke I'm gonna pick something fairly cheap and reliable. If there wasn't anything super safe in my price bracket I'd have been forced to pick the lesser of evils I could find for the right price. I can't pick what car the idiot who decides to run a red in front of a school zone drives. Vehicle safety standards affect everyone, including the folks not in vehicles at all, and should be set to high standards and be law across the board. No exceptions.

Why a Metal Roof is the Best Investment You’ll Ever Make for Your Hamilton Ontario Home!
What should i know about Metal Roofs in Ontario?
When it comes to protecting your home against the unpredictable weather in Southwestern Ontario, a metal roof stands out as one of the best investments you can make. While the initial cost may seem higher, the long-term benefits—from durability to energy savings—quickly add up. Let’s break down the real costs of metal roof shingles, what the installation process looks like, and why features like snow stops are essential for Ontario winters.
Understanding the Real Cost of Metal Roofing
For many homeowners, cost is the first question. Although metal roofs come with a higher price tag than asphalt shingles, they offer significant long-term savings, lasting two to three times as long and requiring far less maintenance.
Here’s what to expect:
Corrugated Metal Roofing: $6 to $12 per square foot
Metal Roof Shingles: $8 to $14 per square foot
High-End Standing Seam: $15 to $20 per square foot
While these prices may feel steep initially, consider that a metal roof can last 50+ years—double or triple the lifespan of asphalt shingles.
Client Spotlight: One of our clients in Halton was initially hesitant due to the upfront costs but went ahead with a metal roof. Ten years in, they’re delighted, having saved on both repair costs and energy bills.
Metal Roof Shingles: A Stylish, Long-Lasting Option
If you appreciate the look of traditional shingles but want something more durable, metal roof shingles offer the best of both worlds. They provide the aesthetic of wood shakes or asphalt shingles, with the lasting protection of metal. Available in various styles and colors, metal shingles can elevate your home’s curb appeal and save you from constant repairs.
Recent Project: We installed metal roof shingles for a family in Hamilton, who loved the look and were thrilled to say goodbye to the leaks and frequent repairs their old roof required.
How Metal Roof Installation Works
One common misconception is that metal roofs are harder to install. With experienced professionals, however, the process is straightforward. Here’s what our installation approach typically involves:
Removing Old Roofing: We’ll remove existing shingles if needed or install the metal roofing over them.
Laying Underlayment: This provides an added layer of protection.
Installing Panels or Shingles: Metal roofing panels or shingles are carefully positioned and secured.
Adding Snow Stops: Essential in snowy regions, snow stops prevent heavy sheets of snow from sliding off suddenly, protecting gutters and walkways.
For instance, we recently completed a metal roof installation in Burlington, which took just a few days and left our client thrilled with the minimal disruption.
Snow Stops for Metal Roofing: A Must-Have in Ontario Winters
One question we frequently receive from Ontario homeowners is how well metal roofs handle snow. While metal roofs naturally shed snow, snow stops prevent large snow sheets from sliding off at once. This feature helps protect your gutters, landscaping, and walkways during heavy snowfalls.
Client Story: A Milton homeowner reached out after their old roof let dangerous snow build up last winter. After we installed a metal roof with snow stops, they enjoyed the peace of mind that their roof could handle Ontario’s harsh winters.
What to Expect in Terms of Price
While the initial investment for metal roofing is higher than asphalt shingles, the long-term savings can be significant. Most metal roofing projects range from $8,000 to $20,000, depending on roof size and complexity. Here’s how you save:
Energy Efficiency: Metal roofs reflect sunlight, which keeps your home cooler in the summer and reduces AC costs.
Low Maintenance: Metal roofing requires minimal upkeep compared to asphalt shingles, meaning fewer repair costs.
Insurance Discounts: Many insurers offer discounts for metal roofs due to their fire resistance and durability in extreme weather.
What Ontario Homeowners Say About Metal Roofing
Our clients in Southwestern Ontario have found that metal roofs deliver exceptional value. Here’s what some of them have to say:
Laura W., Hamilton: “We were hesitant about the cost, but the savings on energy and repairs have been worth it. Plus, the roof looks fantastic!”
John M., Burlington: “The snow stops have been a game changer. Now we don’t have to worry about heavy snow damaging our gutters or landscaping.”
Is a Metal Roof Right for You?
In the end, while the initial cost may be higher, the longevity, energy savings, and low maintenance of metal roofing make it an ideal choice for Ontario homeowners. Whether you’re looking to boost your home’s durability, lower your energy bills, or handle the winter snow safely, a metal roof could be the answer.
At Platinum Roofing, we’ve installed hundreds of metal roofs across the Hamilton and Halton areas, helping homeowners enjoy peace of mind and long-term savings. If you’re considering upgrading to a metal roof, contact us today for a free estimate!

About 170 sheet metal workers in Thunder Bay went on strike May 6, joining thousands of their provincial counterparts in an Ontario-wide job action.
Picket lines went up at six locations in Thunder Bay on Monday morning, said Daniel Krupa, business manager of Sheet Metal Workers Local 397, which represents the Thunder Bay workers.
"The local issues are different, obviously, than the provincial issues," Krupa said. "Provincially, there's about 30 different concessions that the [Ontario Sheet Metal Contractors Association] are looking for."
The association is the bargaining agent for contractors who employ sheet metal workers in the province, while the Ontario Sheet Metal Workers' and Roofers' Conference is the agent of the workers themselves.
"The main thing is, they're trying create one contract, like a one-size-fits-all, for the whole province, which we all know doesn't work," Krupa said. "Right now, there are nine different appendices in our collective agreement for each area, and they're trying to minimize those so there's one."

Sheet metal fabrication begins with the meticulous industrial process of thinning and flattening the metals to form flat structures. The formed metal structures become the foundation of metal shaping or fabrication processes such as bending and cutting the metal into a variety of shapes and designs.
A wide variety of raw metals can be used in metal fabrication, including brass, copper, aluminum, steel, nickel, tin, and titanium. Metal fabricators also use gold, silver, and platinum when aesthetics are important.
Sheet metal is an important and useful material in today’s industrial era. It is used in the manufacture of car bodies, electronic parts, aircraft parts, and the construction of buildings. In the construction industry, steel is an indispensable raw material and input as it offers a cost-effective and high-quality material compared to the available alternatives. Important Factors While Getting Your Residential Duct Cleaning
When it comes to residential duct cleaning, you need to choose the right service provider. You should find one with a proven record of providing high-quality service, and one that is affordable. If you have ductwork that's filled with dust and vermin, you may want to skip this process. If you're unsure of whether you need a duct cleaning service, you should ask for advice.
Tumblr media
Finding a reputable duct cleaning company
If you want to make sure that your ducts are clean, you need to find a reputable company. A company that is rated by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and has Diamond Certification is likely to do a good job. You should also ensure that they carry the proper insurance. This will ensure that the company you hire does the job properly, and that the results will last.
It can be difficult to distinguish between a reputable residential duct cleaning company and a company that will try to sell you their services at a low price. Some of these companies will call you and say their crews will be in your neighborhood the next week, and then put a mold test kit inside your home to scare you into signing up. While this is a good strategy, it's not a good idea to sign up with a company that puts their test kit inside your home.
Preparing for a duct cleaning
To prepare your home for a residential duct cleaning, there are a few things you need to do. First, make sure that there is no furniture or other obstructions that can hinder the cleaning process. This includes windows and doors. If you have small children, you may find this to be an issue. Also, make sure that you have an area where you can cover up any surfaces and provide sanitary supplies for the professionals.
You should also ensure that your ductwork is free of any pets. Most professionals will have to clean a home with multiple ducts, so if yours is large enough, you can have two technicians do the work. This will cost you more, but one professional can only clean so much in an hour. This means that the technician will need to work overtime or return another day to complete the job.
Avoiding a duct cleaning if your ductwork is clogged with vermin
If your ductwork is infested with mold or vermin, it's time to get it cleaned. In addition to keeping your home smelling fresh, it can also help prevent the spread of diseases and odors. However, it's important to know how to clean air ducts effectively.
The best way to know if your air ducts are contaminated with vermin is to look for a buildup of dust inside the furnace compartment. This buildup can affect your system's efficiency and shorten its lifespan. Additionally, vermin can build nests in your ducts and produce spores that can make you and your family sick.
Cost of duct cleaning
If you're worried about your home's air quality, you should consider getting your ducts cleaned by a professional. The cost of residential duct cleaning will depend on several factors, including the size of your house and the size of your central air handler. Most duct cleaning companies charge a flat fee for the service, and typically send two people to complete the job. Some companies also offer mold remediation, which can add several hundred dollars to the cost of cleaning your ducts.
The cost of residential duct cleaning will also depend on where your air ducts are located. Larger homes will have more ducts than smaller ones. Also, flexible ductwork needs to be treated differently than sheet metal, which can make the job more difficult. In addition, the location of the air handler in your home may make it more difficult to reach and clean.

For instance, steel structures are a lot more susceptible to fire than concrete tilt-up buildings are, however they are more immune to quakes and also wind. Mosting likely to a designer for this type of building resembles mosting likely to a mind cosmetic surgeon for a head ache.
We function solely with the best suppliers in the business as well as usage just one of the most long lasting high-tensile steel available.
Structures erected using tilt-up building are typically more affordable to heat as well as cool since the boundary wall surfaces are extra reliable at minimizing air leakage. Tilt-up wall buildings are likewise generally cheaper to keep due to the fact that they are likewise much less vulnerable to damage than light-weight systems. Steel structures are fine in areas that do not have heavy public website traffic, while concrete tilt-up construction is a better selection for structures that deal with heavy usage.
Interested In Our Solutions? Were Below To Assist!
This info is available in this field from the regional concrete providers. The sort of building you have defined is as fundamental a building as you build. I would certainly start by calling the neighborhood municipality that has territory in the area that you are proposing to construct this building. They will have the ability to notify you what you are required to have for strategies and also who can draw them. Going to a designer for this kind of building resembles mosting likely to a mind surgeon for a head pain.
Select a tilt-up building if rate and flexibility are vital to your project. That's since the schedule for a steel structure depends on manufacturing at steel mills as well as manufacture plants. It additionally requires that the superstructure is set up first, complied with by the walls.
Square Feet Of Tarps And Also Buildings Made!
Vandalism as well as maintenance are minimized while safety and security is increased with concrete walls. " Once you get greater, various other issues come up that guide the decision towards various other materials. You can certainly construct taller utilizing cold-formed steel, it simply comes to be less useful." The wall surfaces usually come to the site as partly assembled panels, sometimes with an outside finish already applied. The panels permit the structure to come together swiftly, something one designer referred to as being similar to making use of Lego blocks.
Tumblr media
youtube
Unlike the built steel girders utilized in skyscrapers, buildings like the one on Teeple Terrace use parts constructed from flat steel built to the programmer's requirements. Cold-formed items start out as flat metal sheets that are pressed into numerous shapes such as joists, wall surface studs and flooring panels. The components are shaped at area temperature level in a controlled environment far from the job site.
Devices Storage
The collapse happened as concrete was being soaked among the top floorings of the 41-unit, four-storey building at 555 Teeple Balcony. The accident is being examined by Ontario's work ministry as well as coroner. I don't know the jargon, but I think insurance prices are effected by the fire resistance rating of the structure. Obviously an entirely metal/concrete structure will have a much better score, and therefore must give a lower costs. I have actually aided build a couple of garages, yet no idea where to steel building construction ontario start with something this size. I've communicated obtaining quotes/info from all the larger Canadian business yet can not discover any testimonials of any type of firms and truly not even sure how to compare side by side quotes.
