The majority of censorship is self-censorship
I'm on tour with my new novel The Bezzle! Catch me TONIGHT in SAN DIEGO (Feb 22, Mysterious Galaxy). After that, it's LA (Saturday night, with Adam Conover), Seattle (Monday, with Neal Stephenson), then Portland, Phoenix and more!
I know a lot of polymaths, but Ada Palmer takes the cake: brilliant science fiction writer, brilliant historian, brilliant librettist, brilliant singer, and then some:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/02/10/monopoly-begets-monopoly/#terra-ignota
Palmer is a friend and a colleague. In 2018, she, Adrian Johns and I collaborated on "Censorship, Information Control, & Information Revolutions from Printing Press to Internet," a series of grad seminars at the U Chicago History department (where Ada is a tenured prof, specializing in the Inquisition and Renaissance forbidden knowledge):
https://ifk.uchicago.edu/research/faculty-fellow-projects/censorship-information-control-information-revolutions-from-printing-press/
The project had its origins in a party game that Ada and I used to play at SF conventions: Ada would describe a way that the Inquisitions' censors attacked the printing press, and I'd find an extremely parallel maneuver from governments, the entertainment industry or other entities from the much more recent history of internet censorship battles.
With the seminars, we took it to the next level. Each 3h long session featured a roster of speakers from many disciplines, explaining everything from how encryption works to how white nationalists who were radicalized in Vietnam formed an armored-car robbery gang to finance modems and Apple ][+s to link up neo-Nazis across the USA.
We borrowed the structure of these sessions from science fiction conventions, home to a very specific kind of panel that doesn't always work, but when it does, it's fantastic. It was a natural choice: after all, Ada and I know each other through science fiction.
Even if you're not an sf person, you've probably heard of the Hugo Awards, the most prestigious awards in the field, voted on each year by attendees of the annual World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon). And even if you're not an sf fan, you might have heard about a scandal involving the Hugo Awards, which were held last year in China, a first:
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/science-fiction-authors-excluded-hugo-awards-china-rcna139134
A little background: each year's Worldcon is run by a committee of volunteers. These volunteers put together bids to host the Worldcon, and canvass Worldcon attendees to vote in favor of their bid. For many years, a group of Chinese fans attempted to field a successful bid to host a Worldcon, and, eventually, they won.
At the time, there were many concerns: about traveling to a country with a poor human rights record and a reputation for censorship, and about the logistics of customary Worldcon attendees getting visas. During this debate, many international fans pointed to the poor human rights record in the USA (which has hosted the vast majority of Worldcons since their inception), and the absolute ghastly rigmarole the US government subjects many foreign visitors to when they seek visas to come to the US for conventions.
Whatever side of this debate you came down on, it couldn't be denied that the Chinese Worldcon rang a lot of alarm-bells. Communications were spotty, and then the con was unceremoniously rescheduled for months after the original scheduled date, without any good explanation. Rumors swirled of Chinese petty officials muscling their way into the con's administration.
But the real alarm bells started clanging after the Hugo Award ceremony. Normally, after the Hugos are given out, attendees are given paper handouts tallying the nominations and votes, and those numbers are also simultaneously published online. Technically, the Hugo committee has a grace period of some weeks before this data must be published, but at every Worldcon I've attended over the past 30+ years, I left the Hugos with a data-sheet in my hand.
Then, in early December, at the very last moment, the Hugo committee released its data â and all hell broke loose. Numerous, acclaimed works had been unilaterally "disqualified" from the ballot. Many of these were written by writers from the Chinese diaspora, but some works â like an episode of Neil Gaiman's Sandman â were seemingly unconnected to any national considerations.
Readers and writers erupted in outrage, demanding to know what had happened. The Hugo administrators â Americans and Canadians who'd volunteered in those roles for many years and were widely viewed as being members in good standing of the community â were either silent or responded with rude and insulting remarks. One thing they didn't do was explain themselves.
The absence of facts left a void that rumors and speculation rushed in to fill. Stories of Chinese official censorship swirled online, and along with them, a kind of I-told-you-so: China should never have been home to a Worldcon, the country's authoritarian national politics are fundamentally incompatible with a literary festival.
As the outrage mounted and the scandal breached from the confines of science fiction fans and writers to the wider world, more details kept emerging. A damning set of internal leaks revealed that it was those long-serving American and Canadian volunteers who decided to censor the ballot. They did so out of a vague sense that the Chinese state would visit some unspecified sanction on the con if politically unpalatable works appeared on the Hugo ballot. Incredibly, they even compiled clumsy dossiers on nominees, disqualifying one nominee out of a mistaken belief that he had once visited Tibet (it was actually Nepal).
There's no evidence that the Chinese state asked these people to do this. Likewise, it wasn't pressure from the Chinese state that caused them to throw out hundreds of ballots cast by Chinese fans, whom they believed were voting for a "slate" of works (it's not clear if this is the case, but slate voting is permitted under Hugo rules).
All this has raised many questions about the future of the Hugo Awards, and the status of the awards that were given in China. There's widespread concern that Chinese fans involved with the con may face state retaliation due to the negative press that these shenanigans stirred up.
But there's also a lot of questions about censorship, and the nature of both state and private censorship, and the relationship between the two. These are questions that Ada is extremely well-poised to answer; indeed, they're the subject of her book-in-progress, entitled Why We Censor: from the Inquisition to the Internet.
In a magisterial essay for Reactor, Palmer stakes out her central thesis: "The majority of censorship is self-censorship, but the majority of self-censorship is intentionally cultivated by an outside power":
https://reactormag.com/tools-for-thinking-about-censorship/
States â even very powerful states â that wish to censor lack the resources to accomplish totalizing censorship of the sort depicted in Nineteen Eighty-Four. They can't go from house to house, searching every nook and cranny for copies of forbidden literature. The only way to kill an idea is to stop people from expressing it in the first place. Convincing people to censor themselves is, "dollar for dollar and man-hour for man-hour, much cheaper and more impactful than anything else a censorious regime can do."
Ada invokes examples modern and ancient, including from her own area of specialty, the Inquisition and its treatment of Gailileo. The Inquistions didn't set out to silence Galileo. If that had been its objective, it could have just assassinated him. This was cheap, easy and reliable! Instead, the Inquisition persecuted Galileo, in a very high-profile manner, making him and his ideas far more famous.
But this isn't some early example of Inquisitorial Streisand Effect. The point of persecuting Galileo was to convince Descartes to self-censor, which he did. He took his manuscript back from the publisher and cut the sections the Inquisition was likely to find offensive. It wasn't just Descartes: "thousands of other major thinkers of the time wrote differently, spoke differently, chose different projects, and passed different ideas on to the next century because they self-censored after the Galileo trial."
This is direct self-censorship, where people are frightened into silencing themselves. But there's another form of censorship, which Ada calls "middlemen censorship." That's when someone other than the government censors a work because they fear what the government would do if they didn't. Think of Scholastic's cowardly decision to pull inclusive, LGBTQ books out of its book fair selections even though no one had ordered them to do so:
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/06/books/scholastic-book-racism-maggie-tokuda-hall.html
This is a form of censorship outsourcing, and it "multiplies the manpower of a censorship system by the number of individuals within its power." The censoring body doesn't need to hire people to search everyone's houses for offensive books â it can frighten editors, publishers, distributors, booksellers and librarians into suppressing the books in the first place.
This outsourcing blurs the line between state and private surveillance. Think about comics. After a series of high-profile Congressional hearings about the supposed danger of comics to impressionable young minds, the comics industry undertook a regime of self-censorship, through which the private Comics Code Authority would vet comings for "dangerous" content before allowing its seal of approval to appear on the comics' covers. Distributors and retailers refused to carry books without a CCA stamp, so publishers refused to publish books unless they could get a CCA stamp.
The CCA was unaccountable, capricious â and racist. By the 60s and 70s, it became clear that comic about Black characters were subjected to much tighter scrutiny than comics featuring white heroes. The CCA would reject "a drop of sweat on the forehead of a Black astronaut as 'too graphic' since it 'could be mistaken for blood.'" Every comic that got sent back by the CCA meant long, brutal reworkings by writers and illustrators to get them past the censors.
The US government never censored heroes like Black Panther, but the chain of events that created the CCA "middleman censors" made sure that Black Panther appeared in far fewer comics starring Marvel's most prominent Black character. An analysis of censorship that tries to draw a line between private and public censorship would say that the government played no role in Black Panther's banishment to obscurity â but without Congressional action, Black Panther would never have faced censorship.
This is why attempts to cleanly divide public and private censorship always break down. Many people will tell you that when Twitter or Facebook blocks content they disagree with, that's not censorship, since censorship is government action, and these are private actors. What they mean is that Twitter and Facebook censorship doesn't violate the First Amendment, but it's perfectly possible to infringe on free speech without violating the US Constitution. What's more, if the government fails to prevent monopolization of our speech forums â like social media â and also declines to offer its own public speech forums that are bound to respect the First Amendment, we can end up with government choices that produce an environment in which some ideas are suppressed wherever they might find an audience â all without violating the Constitution:
https://locusmag.com/2020/01/cory-doctorow-inaction-is-a-form-of-action/
The great censorious regimes of the past â the USSR, the Inquisition â left behind vast troves of bureaucratic records, and these records are full of complaints about the censors' lack of resources. They didn't have the manpower, the office space, the money or the power to erase the ideas they were ordered to suppress. As Ada notes, "In the period that Spainâs Inquisition was wildly out of Romeâs control, the Roman Inquisition even printed manuals to guide its Inquisitors on how to bluff their way through pretending they were on top of what Spain was doing!"
Censors have always done â and still do â their work not by wielding power, but by projecting it. Even the most powerful state actors are not powerful enough to truly censor, in the sense of confiscating every work expressing an idea and punishing everyone who creates such a work. Instead, when they rely on self-censorship, both by individuals and by intermediaries. When censors act to block one work and not another, or when they punish one transgressor while another is free to speak, it's tempting to think that they are following some arcane ruleset that defines when enforcement is strict and when it's weak. But the truth is, they censor erratically because they are too weak to censor comprehensively.
Spectacular acts of censorship and punishment are a performance, "to change the way people act and think." Censors "seek out actions that can cause the maximum number of people to notice and feel their presence, with a minimum of expense and manpower."
The censor can only succeed by convincing us to do their work for them. That's why drawing a line between state censorship and private censorship is such a misleading exercise. Censorship is, and always has been, a public-private partnership.

I kinda want a fic where Eddie is straight. Strong Ally, totally safe, but the guy is straight. There's a few months after they successfully take down Vecna that he and Robin and Steve are all besties, living in each others' pockets. During that time, he makes a lot of jokes that Steve is going to make a great housewife someday, makes some comments that aren't quite jokes that he wishes Steve was a girl, and has some very much suppressed thoughts that the only thing stopping them is that Eddie isn't attracted to men.
Near the end of the summer, before Steve is going to follow Robin to Sarah Lawrence, Steve comes out as bi to the whole group, and Eddie, for the first time, unashamedly thinks, damn, if only I wasn't straight. Steve even gets brave a few days before they leave and broaches the topic of Steve having a crush on Eddie. Keeps saying that he's not going to hit on Eddie, but wanted to take the chance, just in case Eddie had ever thought about it.
"Sorry, Steve, I only date girls."
And the awkwardness isn't the only reason the three drift apart, but it doesn't help. They send letters and post cards between Chicago and New York, and try to call at least once a month, but they're all broke, and long distance is expensive. Two years out, and Eddie knows something weird is happening with Steve and Robin, but they don't want to talk about it. They still talk, they're still friends, they'd still die for each other, but there is something they're hiding from him. Three and a half years out, and the bureaucrats finally got their act together. 'Thanks for not telling anybody' checks get sent to everyone in the know. Very large checks.
Robin graduates, and she and Stevie have a comfortable cushion. They don't have to take horrible minimum wage jobs anymore, and some expensive things they've been saving up to do for a while can finally happen.
This is where the fic in my head actually starts.
Eddie hears all about Los Angeles from Robin, but she tells him that Stevie isn't feeling great after the trip, and that Eddie will get a letter soon.
Its four months later, almost exactly four years since the three last saw each other in person when they finally meet again. Robin got a job in Chicago, and Eddie is still there, now a full artist in a tattoo parlor, playing gigs for fun with random friends. Stevie, of course, follows Robin, and Eddie tries hard not to stay upset with the guy for the weirdness and the sometimes silence, and the very obvious distance that Steve put between them recently.
Then they see each other. Meeting up at what has to be the queerest bar in the city, and it takes Eddie way, way too long to put together what's waiting at a booth along the wall. He's an ally, he's heard all the terms and types and nodded along in supportive silence because he doesn't get it, but he's trying.
But there's Robin, sitting on the outside, with a brunette beside her, possibly the most beautiful woman Eddie has ever seen, strong, tall, long wavy chestnut hair, and a spattering of very distinct moles. The little bit of a smile she has when Eddie first comes over melts into something small and scared as Eddie stares in shock. It's Stevie, it has to be, and Robin's exclusive use of what was once only a nickname suddenly makes more sense. He knows he needs to make sure he's using the right name, pronouns, whatever she wants. He's friend of a friend with a couple trans people, and again, he doesn't get it, but he listened, and he cannot fuck this up, because it's Stevie and this must be what they were hiding, but the inside of his brain sounds like an endless loop of mic feedback for a solid sixty seconds.
Sixty seconds is an insanely long time.
Before his brain turns over and he can smile and reach the table, Stevie has shrunk into the corner, and Robin looks ready to launch herself at Eddie's throat in her soulmate's defense.
A whole list of intrusive thoughts hit Eddie all at once while his mouth runs on autopilot, asking the right questions, smiling encouragingly, introducing himself to, yes, Stevie Harrington, and dragging the mood to a happy place by sheer force of will. Stevie starts to uncurl, smiles a little brighter, sits up straight, laughs properly at Eddie's dumb stories about terrible tattoos, and leans closer as the night goes on.
He fixes the weirdness he started in his shock, because there is no way in hell he's not going to keep two of his best friends now that they live in the same city again.
But his head is stuck spiraling around a snarl of horrible, selfish, invasive thoughts. The worst of which: Stevie is now Stevie because Eddie told her that he only liked girls. And he knows thats stupid and isn't why Stevie made this choice, and he hates himself for thinking it, but the thought is still there. That Eddie wanted so badly that she's now Stevie. Another, only slightly less horrible thought, is that the immediate fairytale ending he imagined on first sight - might be ruined because Eddie is still straight, and he's just not sure about, you know, the details.
Eddie did a great job that first night, and they're back to hanging out all the time as soon as the last boxes are unpacked. It is not Stevie's fault that seeing her in a sports bra for the once confirmed that the payouts, the LA trip, and her new shirt size were related. It's not her fault that Eddie can't stop thinking about how hot she is.
It's absolutely not her fault that Eddie starts getting weird around her. He's trying, okay? He's trying so hard. But its weird for him. He likes her. That part he's certain of. Loves her, almost definitely. He thinks she's gorgeous, high confidence on that part too. He has a crush, but he knows, deeper than the rest, that Stevie isn't confident in herself yet. She acts it most of the time, but its under the surface, a thread of fear that she's not girl enough to count.
And Eddie has a crush. And Eddie can't tell her. Because Eddie won't put them in a situation where Stevie's pants come off, and Eddie suddenly can't see her as the woman she is. It would hurt Stevie so bad, and Eddie would never forgive himself.
It's not like he can ask her just how much surgery she got in LA so he can prepare. And honestly, he's not sure it would matter one way or the other. He's terrified that whatever her choice, Eddie will fuck up his reaction. The risk is unsolvable. Robin calls him out on his crush two months later, and since the other choice is even worse, Eddie lies, and says she's wrong. No crush. Nope. Not even a tiny one.
Eddie tries to will himself into becoming bisexual for an entire month, going so far as making out with a very feminine twink at a club - he thought he'd ease his way into this - but he's still decidedly straight. Rubbing against the twink's remarkably small dick wasn't repulsive, but it didn't do anything for him either. Sure, he learns there's all kinds of pleasurable things to try that he didn't know about, but he's still not into anyone but girls.
(I don't know if this is the right resolution bc Ive spun Eddie pretty tight here, but this is getting so long. )
Robin's girlfriend has a party at a gay bar for her birthday. Obviously, Eddie and Stevie are invited, and obviously, just like every other day on this earth, Stevie looks incredible. She has a sparkly dress and tall boots and glitter on her collarbones and Eddie wants to lick her. His lovelorn staring only gets worse as the night goes on. Stevie is dancing, and Eddie is drinking at the bar with a collection of purses and carabiners of keys slung around and clipped to him. It's obvious enough that a gay couple - Nick and Chris - starts teasing him about it, telling him to man up and ask the pretty girl to dance already.
Eddie is too drunk for this, and he for sure has a guilt trip later for it, but he just starts talking. All of his fears and all of his love, and how he can't ever say anything because he's tried, and he's straight anyway, and he loves Stevie too much to hurt her like that. It's an entire miracle that Eddie broke down in front of a decent pair of human beings, and not some assholes. They sweep him off to a quieter corner outside, help him calm down as he smokes, and feed him some fries.
Eddie is still wearing purses like bandoliers, is snotty and red eyed, is on his third cigarette and fourth whiskey, and resisting the need to runaway forever when the older of the couple calls over someone named Angel. A woman who, if Eddie was not hopelessly in love with Stevie, would be the source of an immediate new crush. She's older than he is, thin through the waist, thick thighs, bottle blonde hair in a ponytail, and has a few inches on Eddie with her heels. The primal part of his brain wants to climb her like a tree.
'Hi Chris. Oh, honey, you having a rough night?" Angel has a few words with Chris, then grins like the cat who caught the canary.
'You're gonna be my good karma for the month, cutie. You are attracted to me, no don't try, thats a cute blush but I can still see it behind your hair, you are. You're straight, right? Yeah, that's why you think I'm hot. Hey, Chris? Do you think I'm hot?"
"Not at all, babe. You know I only go for men."
Angel turns back to Eddie and leans close to explain. 'Chris is a bit of a man whore. Loooooves dick. Don't worry, he says it all the time. Favorite thing in the world, and I've heard he's great at sucking dick. Tragically, I never get to find out, because I'm not a guy.' She pushes the word a little. Then she steps even closer so she's pressed against his side.
Arousal sweeps through him because in love with Stevie or not, Angel is hot as hell. 'Wanna go fool around in the bathroom?' she whispers
Eddie is definitely tempted, already nodding, but doesn't get to speak. Angel rolls her hips. He feels -- A new bolt of arousal shoots down his spine. 'this change your mind at all?' Her voice drops two octaves, and Eddie's brain breaks.
Because, as it turns out, no. No, it does not change his mind. He's half hard, he still wants to climb her, and he's not entirely sure how to get her off, but he takes direction well.
'Aww, figure yourself out, already, honey? Or do you want to test run this a bit more before you go for it?' Angel is back to her real voice, a high alto. She has one hand on his chest, and Eddie can hear Nick laughing nearby. 'I won't lie, I know I won't get to keep you, but you look like we could have a real fun time as I teach you. Happy to get you trained up for her'
Eddie shakes his head, an insane mix of bubbly and numb.
'Ohhh, so you're gonna go get your girl?' She's teasing him.
Eddie nods, already moving, vaguely aware of more laughter and jokes about karma and saving lost lambs, but too fixated to listen. He's still carrying all the purses. He's not entirely sure where Stevie is in the bar. He has absolutely no idea what he's going to say when he finds her. Still not sure how to worship her properly. Extremely interested in following directions on the topic.
Eddie is still straight, but luckily, the girl of his dreams is dancing inside, and the rest of the details don't matter in the face of the possibility of finally asking her out.
When he finally chases her down at a high top with a cosmo, she laughs at how he looks, but he's never, ever seen her smile like she does when she agrees to a date with him.
--
This is sort of about a friend as they worked through realizing they weren't attracted to their wife after she transitioned, but that was sad, and this needed to not be. I guess I'm just thinking about the non-fanfic nature of life. Where it takes a guy a long while to figure himself out, because good intentions are separate from shifting how you think. Basically wanted Eddie in a situation where he has to reconcile the difference between gender and anatomy, and rewrite his own definitions of what he is and isn't attracted to. Robin had to go through a similar thing as she became attracted to Steve but only in the abstract. They're too platonic for gender to stop their bond

Part 2
Summary: When Captain Gerrard takes charge of the 118, he targets each of the team. Specifically (Y/n), because she's pregnant. And his actions put her at risk.
Enjoy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tossing the clipboard down on the gurney, (Y/n) twisted on her heels and unlocked the medicine cabinet in the corner of the ambulance near the emergency door. Her fingertips grazed along each glass bottle, counting each one in every row and checking the labels to make sure they were in date.
Once they were all accounted for, she ticked them off on the check sheet and turned around.
That was the ambulance restocked and ready to go again. Not that it needed checking and restocking today after Evan had already done it yesterday, but (Y/n) needed to keep busy.
She had been told to 'make herself useful' and she knew what that meant. If Gerrard caught her doing nothing, even if she was just taking a break, he would have her for it. And (Y/n) couldn't be dealing with his fluctuating temper. She would rather appease him and keep him at bay than give him any reason to single her out.
"Diaz, you've shrunk."
A jolt ran through (Y/n)'s chest and her heart shuddered like a bird in a cage. She pinned the clipboard against her stomach and took a deep breath, glaring down at Hen who was leant up against the back door with her arms folded over her chest and a smirk playing on her lips.
"Pardon?" She raised a brow and looked down at Hen, waiting for the punchline of her joke.
For a dreaded moment when she heard her voice, (Y/n) thought it was Gerrard come to antagonise her for something.
"Your shirt says Diaz." Her shoulder slumped against the door a little more so she could cross one leg over the other while she pointed at the shirt (Y/n) was wearing. Not all of their uniforms had their names on the back, but some of them did. And right now, (Y/n) was wearing a shirt that said Diaz on the back, and that wasn't her name. Not yet, anyway.
"My stuff doesn't fit me anymore." (Y/n) tilted her head down, trying to hide the smile that was desperate to spread across her lips. She couldn't afford to be smiling and looking cheesy in case their Captain happened to pass by.
She set the clipboard down on the gurney and moved her hand to indicate her stomach. Not a lot of her clothing fit now she had a baby bump in the way.
The first few months had been fine, (Y/n) only had to disclose the pregnancy to Bobby- while he had been in charge of the station. No one else knew until she started to hang back on the larger calls and Bobby started giving her different orders like telling her to hang back at the truck or go and assist as a medic. Then when her stomach started to go round, it was an easy giveaway.
Being four and then five months pregnant was okay, (Y/n) had still managed to fit into her work clothes no problem. But now, being just over six months, (Y/n) couldn't stretch her shirts anymore without ripping them. They wouldn't go over her bump or tuck into her trousers anymore, and she'd had to go up a size or two in trousers so the buttons actually did up.
It was a change that both Eddie and Evan loved, but one that made (Y/n) self-conscious around their new Captain.
Gerrard liked to single (Y/n) out. He made jibes because she was pregnant, he tried to test her and see how far he could push her on the job.
All of them thought he would treat (Y/n) the way he treat Chimney when he first joined the station. They thought he would confine her to the station and change her job role to cleaner, she had been prepared to be stuck inside, mopping the floors, cleaning out the trucks and restocking the cupboards.
No one had expected him to keep (Y/n) on all of their callouts. He barely played things by the book, he got her on every call out and got her handling equipment and the truck or the ambulance. Gerrard kept things just on the line of the rules so he couldn't be reprimanded, he pushed (Y/n) as far as he could because he knew she wouldn't back down.
(Y/n) couldn't say no and have him call her weak or tell her she should be on maternity leave if she 'wasn't going to do any work around here'.
"No kidding," Hen muttered with a smile that made (Y/n) feel at ease.
She grabbed the door and carefully climbed down so she could follow Hen across the station floor, unsure where they were actually going. There hadn't been a callout in almost two hours, which left everyone pondering around, wondering what they were supposed to do with themselves.
(Y/n) had started to feel useless at the station while Bobby was in charge because he didn't let her assist on a lot of calls, for safety. But now with Gerrard here, (Y/n) felt like she was at her wits end, she was wearing herself thin and it was draining the patience both Evan and Eddie had.
Both men could see the toll the job was taking on (Y/n) and they were starting to worry about her.
"So, how's you and the little guy doing?" Hen aimed towards the stairs and when she pointed to the kitchen, (Y/n) nodded. It was almost lunchtime and there was nothing else for them to be doing. While they had the time, they may as well see if they could get something to eat with the team before the bell sounded and they were all off again.
(Y/n) moved her hand down to her stomach, rubbing circles over her shirt as she smiled softly. "We're good, I think he's asleep right now. We've got another scan next week."
"Hm, I think Buck may have mentioned that once or twice." Hen bit back a laugh when (Y/n) rolled her eyes.
Evan told everyone whenever they were going for a scan. He and Eddie both tried to be there for all of (Y/n)'s appointments if they could and of course, he told people when they were going for one. He was always telling Maddie first though because she loved to see and have a copy of the scan photos.
He took pleasure in telling his parents just to see the way his mother looked drastically ill at the thought of her first grandchild having three parents rather than the conventional mum and dad.
Eddie's parents were still taking time to adjust to Eddie's relationship, but they couldn't be as cold or uncaring as they first felt because they both had a soft spot for Evan and (Y/n). And they knew that Eddie and Chris were happier than they had ever been so it was hard to dispute.
(Y/n) aimed for the table and took her usual seat while Hen went to grab a drink from the fridge. Both of them clocked Evan in the kitchen, moving from one counter to the next, first with a dish in his hand, and then with a wooden spoon, and then with a tea towel tossed over his shoulder.
Without Bobby here, Evan had silently taken over with the cooking. It just seemed to make sense. He loved cooking, it was something he enjoyed and took his mind off of the crude, callous Captain they now found themselves with. And everyone loved his cooking. They all let him get on with it. The only person who was grumpy about Evan's food was Gerrard because he couldn't find anything wrong with it no matter how hard he tried.
"Hey mi amor,"
A grin spread across (Y/n)'s lips and she tilted her head back, slouching down in her seat when she felt a familiar pair of hands on her shoulders.
"Hi." She reached up to give Eddie's hand a squeeze and her chest fluttered when he leaned down and pressed a kiss to her temple.
Clearly Gerrard wasn't around if Eddie was dolling out the affection. The three of them had to be careful when they were on shift together. If he caught them so much as standing too close to one another he either made a snide joke or tried to reprimand them and pull them up on being professional while on shift.
But when he wasn't around, kisses were shared in quiet corners and touches were shared behind closed doors.
The only times Gerrard couldn't say anything was when they sat together at lunch or in the fire truck. He couldn't say anything about proximity when they were all sat next to one another, on their best behaviour about being professional. And they took full advantage. In the back of the truck while Gerrard sat up front, he couldn't see or say anything about Eddie's hand wandering up and down Evan's thigh or Evan's hand on (Y/n)'s stomach or his lips against her temple.
Eddie took a quick glance towards the stairs before moving his lips further south and capturing (Y/n) in a quick kiss. He savoured the touch and relished in the feeling of her hand slithering up to cup his neck.
But his lips crinkled and his nose twitched when he swiped his tongue across her lips and was met with a familiar tang. Blood.
Eddie's eyes snapped open and he pulled back just enough so his lips were hovering an inch above hers so their breaths mingled together. His brows knitted together and his chest tightened when he saw the dark rouge colour running down her nose and across her lip.
"Mi amor, head forward for me." He gently gripped (Y/n)'s chin and tugged her head down, causing her to sit up straight and lean over when she realised what was happening. "Buck, paper towel please." Eddie clicked his fingers in Evan's direction until their partner looked their way.
A quiet "Shit," passed Evan's lips and he spun around, grabbing a wad of paper towels from the side before he headed over to the pair of them.
(Y/n) pressed her hands down on the tabletop, feeling Eddie's chest pressing down against her shoulders and his chin hovered near her neck so he could look over her shoulder. His hand stayed cupping her chin and he gratefully took the paper towels from Evan and held them against (Y/n)'s nose.
Nosebleeds had been (Y/n)'s enemy since she got pregnant, she seemed to have them frequently now, but they didn't last long.
The worst one she had was last month during the night. Evan woke up with (Y/n)'s head on his chest and a river of blood running across his skin. He thought for a dreaded minute that he was having some kind of accident like he was waking up from anaesthetic in the middle of an operation.
A headache started to roll in behind (Y/n)'s eyes and she swallowed down a groan, closing her eyes as she concentrated on breathing through her mouth. She kept her head tilted forward like she was going to headbutt the table. At least this one didn't feel heavy, she wasn't coughing blood everywhere like she had last time.
"Let's have a look, sweetheart." Evan slumped down into the seat next to (Y/n) and took the wad of tissue from Eddie's hand, dumping the bloodied tissue on the table.
He gently held (Y/n)'s chin and lifted her head up, a smile fluttering across his lips when he saw that the bleeding seemed to have stopped now.
"You good?"
"Yeah, sorry." She grabbed another paper towel and swiped it across her lips, trying to make sure all traces of burnt orange were clean from her face. The last thing she needed was a certain someone making a comment or telling her to go clean herself up.
Eddie kissed her hair and rubbed his hands up and down her arms but when he heard those thunderous boots hitting the stairs, he audibly growled. Just what they needed, Gerrard coming to make a scene.
"Buck, is this done?" Hen motioned to the tray of piping hot lasagne in front of her, both because she was hungry and to get Evan back to his cooking station. They didn't need to have another argument break out, they all argued almost every shift with Gerrard and it was doing them no good.
With pursed lips, Evan tried to smile. He gave (Y/n)'s chin a light squeeze and tilted her head in his direction so he could have a kiss. His fingers brushed across her cheek and when he pushed up, he paused midway to let Eddie lean over and snatch a kiss as well. He darted back to the kitchen just as Gerrard stomped up the stairs, his usual unimpressed look painted over his face.
His eyes set on Eddie immediately and he rose a brow, clearly disgruntled to see Eddie standing so close to one of his partners.
Gerrard didn't like different. He didn't like anything that challenged or differed from the old ways, the generic and safe boundaries of society. He didn't like Chimney for racial reasons. He didn't like Hen for homophobic reasons. He had a grudge against Evan for being in a poly relationship and finding out he wasn't part of the 'white boy' gang Gerrard used to have when he first came to the station ten years ago.
He didn't like Eddie both for his poly relationship and because of his heritage. He wasn't a fan of him being with two people, one of them being a man also hit like a bullet.
For the same reason, he didn't like (Y/n) for her relationship, for being a woman, and he liked to think of her as weak now she was pregnant.
They all had targets on their backs, but the three of them had bigger markers for Gerrard. He liked to rile them up and see how far he could go, he had more reasons to go against the three of them and being in charge of them gave him a power trip.
For once, Eddie didn't make a move to sit down. They had all agreed to stand up to Gerrard by catching him out. Whenever he made comments, they noted it down and sent a report. When he treated them unfairly, they documented it and then sent a copy to the chief. If he tried to be out of line with them, everyone made sure to drag the conversation somewhere public. As long as they had at least one witness, Gerrard had to watch what he said.
But Eddie wasn't in the mood to play nice right now. His hand stayed on (Y/n)'s shoulder and he stayed standing behind her chair with one leg crossed over the other and his other hand on his hip.
"Diaz," Gerrard nodded at him but when he went to approach the kitchen, presumably to try and take a jibe at Evan, he paused. His head turned to the left and he locked eyes on (Y/n), taking note of the paper towel in her hand and the scrunched up, bloodied pile on the table. "Jesus, not another one, or has there been a disagreement I didn't know about?"
He took a quick look around as if expecting to find someone with bloodied knuckles, indicating a fight had taken place. The quirked smile on his lips made Eddie shiver and had him ready to start a disagreement right here and now.
Before anyone could comment, the alarm bell sounded and dispatch came through the tanoid speakers.
Right when they were going to sit down to eat.
A chorus of groans sounded throughout the kitchen as everyone put down whatever they were doing and listened to the announcement to see what kind of call they were going on.
"Okay, you all know what to do, don't you?" Gerrard pointed his thumb over his shoulder and took a step back to watch them filter towards the stairs. He paid particular attention to Evan who frowned and planted both hands down on the counter while he listened to the dispatch describing the call.
"Uh, that's a high code building fire."
"Yes Buckley, it is." The sarcasm dripped from Gerrard's voice and he moved his hand, motioning for Evan to leave the kitchen and aim for the stairs. His tone caused Evan to roll his eyes and hunch up his shoulders, trying to draw in a deep breath to control himself.
"So (Y/n) shouldn't be going on this call." They all knew the rules. (Y/n) was on light duties. She couldn't go into a fire, not even if she was suited up and with her team. She couldn't assist on fires, on multi-car pile ups or any calls where there was a dispute with weapons involved.
She was a spare set of hands only. She helped as a medic or to get equipment set up or to direct people on scene. (Y/n) was effectively a shadow on a lot of calls but it was to keep her safe. She would be on maternity leave next month because after seven months it would be too dangerous to go on any call outs.
They had everything agreed and in place with Bobby. Why did Gerrard have to turn up and tip the scales?
(Y/n) took a deep breath and snook a glance up at Eddie behind her when his hand tightened on her shoulder. She didn't want to be an issue or cause problems. If Gerrard wanted her on this call she was happy to go, she would only be sorting the equipment and the hose and looking after the casualties anyway, she wouldn't be suiting up for the fire.
She pushed up from her seat, scrunching up the used tissues to throw in the bin. The moment Eddie's touch left her body, (Y/n) felt bare and unprotected and it made her conceal a shiver.
Passing Gerrard made her feel worse. She could feel his eyes scoping her up and down with a raised brow. His nose crinkled and his upper lip curled in distaste as he looked at her like she was a nuisance he didn't want around.
"Are you in charge now, Buckley?" When Evan didn't answer, Gerrard looked at (Y/n). "You're part of this team, that means you pull your weight. You can handle doing your job, can't you?"
Something snappy and sarcastic was on the tip of (Y/n)'s tongue, but she pushed it away like a foul taste in her mouth and settled for nodding her head, muttering a quiet "Of course," under her breath.
"See."
"Isn't it your job to oversee everyone's safety? She's on light duties-"
"She can do the job as background support. I oversee the smooth running of this place and I make sure my team pull their weight. If she doesn't mess up, she won't be in danger, will she?"
(Y/n) shuddered when Eddie kicked the chair under the table so harshly all four table legs scraped against the floor. She felt his hands on her waist and she forced her feet to move, hoping Eddie would follow after her and not stop to start a fight. They all needed to go get ready before one of them said something that would get them disciplined or suspended.
They could hear Evan throwing the tea towel across the counter and huffing as he made quick work of following after them.
They didn't give a damn about Gerrard or his orders. If he wanted the team to work, they would all continue to look out for each other. If (Y/n) couldn't do something, the boys would do it for her. They would 'pull her weight' in the team as it were and shield her behind them. They would do the job for her so Gerrard had no means to pick on her.
***
"I can't go in there." (Y/n) could feel the palm of her hands beginning to sweat as she looked up at her Captain who she had a growing distain for.
She didn't like standing up to him. She preferred the boys or Hen to point out when Gerrard was wrong and tell him the codes of conduct to prove that his actions weren't justified. They usually left that to Evan, his ADHD gave him a good memory for facts and visuals and he had all but memorised the handbook. He could pull out any rule, section or code to call Gerrard up on.
And right now, (Y/n) couldn't remember the specific codes, but she knew Gerrard was trying to break them.
"I'm telling you to suit up and get your ass into gear, (Y/l/n) we need to get this fire under control-"
"I can't go in there and if you order me to you're making me a liability on the team. Please." Her head started to shake and her hands ran up and down her overalls.
She was going to be sick. Her head was pounding. She was going to have another nosebleed.
If (Y/n) went into that building she was putting herself and her unborn baby at risk and she would become a liability because if she fell or tripped or went dizzy she would waste precious time. The team might have to spend more resources and effort to find her and help her out and she would become one of their casualties rather than one of the team.
(Y/n) wasn't supposed to be here, she shouldn't be on site of this building fire, it was a risky call and Bobby would have made her hang back at the station if he were in charge. Hen would of made the same call too. Gerrard was taking his leadership too far and breaking the boundaries.
She could see the rage bubbling up inside his eyes and his hands clenched into fists and for a moment, (Y/n) wondered if he was going to step forward and hit her. But then his finger pointed between her and the truck and his curved nose crinkled and twitched like a rabbit.
"You being on this team is a liability in itself." His words made her shoulders quake and she coiled in on herself, holding back tears. "Now suit up. If you won't go in the building, then you can man the hose from the doorway and get this fucking thing under control, or I will reprimand you. Understood?"
Her legs started to shake as she spun on her heels and stormed towards the truck.
Everything was shaking. Her heart was hammering against her chest. The baby was twisting and threatening to make her sick. Her fingertips turned numb and she could barely feel her hands when she reached out for her helmet and shrugged on her jacket.
Putting on her gloves made her hands feel like blocks of ice, unable to bend or move the way she wanted them to.
(Y/n) swallowed a few times to try and calm herself down and make sure she didn't throw up. That was the last thing she needed right now. She looped the hose over her shoulder and trudged towards the building.
Chimney and Eddie had gone up on the ladder to evacuate the top floor and put out the separate fires up there. Hen and Evan were inside the building with most of the 138 team to get it under control. (Y/n) was supposed to be on standby, getting things off the truck and helping as a relief medic when the patients started to filter out.
She wasn't supposed to be anywhere near the building itself. This was dangerous, but as long as she wasn't going inside, (Y/n) would do what she could to help. She never worried about feeling useless on the job until Gerrard came in charge.
"Hose!"
She motioned the hose on her shoulder when she saw Hen hurrying out the doors, presumably for more resources like this.
A deep frown set into Hen's features when she saw how close (Y/n) was and (Y/n) realised it looked a lot like she was about to rush into the burning building as back up. That wasn't what she was doing. She wouldn't put herself and her baby at risk like that.
"What are you d-"
Whatever Hen tried to say drowned out when a blast shocked the foundations of the building. All the windows on the first floor burst. Gusts of air and billowing motions of smoke soured through the windows and out into the open air.
The surge and the backlash knocked everyone within a ten foot radius off their feet, including the girls.
(Y/n)'s eyes snapped closed and her hands tightened around the hose as if it would somehow work as a harness or a rope to hold her up and prevent a harsh fall. It didn't. The blast sent her backwards and took her feet from beneath her. She went down on the pavement with a thud and she was relieved she had her helmet on or the force would have knocked her out.
All the oxygen escaped her lungs and (Y/n) laid on her back, jaw hung down, lips murmuring as she tried to suck in a proper breath and get her chest working again.
"(Y/n)? (Y/n)⊠you with me?"
She felt Hen kneeling beside her and it made (Y/n) wonder how long she had been laid there, gasping for air. Her eyes opened with some force and she blinked through the smoke that made it look like midnight rather than midday.
Hen's worried expression came into view and (Y/n) managed to nod and wrap her hands around Hen's arm that was stretched out in front of her. She let her friend reel her up into a sitting position and she took a minute to shake her head and gather her senses.
Just a little fall. A relatively small blast considering the structure was still standing and the building foundations hadn't been wrecked. (Y/n) hadn't even broken a bone.
When Evan got hit by lightning, the force had been so great that (Y/n) fell backwards and toppled off the truck. She dislocated her shoulder and broke a rib from that impact. This was nothing compared to that.
"I- I'm good."
Hen looked doubtful. She rose a brow and quirked her head to the side as if to say she didn't believe (Y/n). She reached out for (Y/n) and did a quick assessment, trying to gage whether she had any cuts, bruises or dreaded broken bones.
When Hen's gaze dropped down to (Y/n)'s stomach, she tilted her own head down and followed her gaze.
She hadn't landed on her stomach or her side, she had fallen straight on her back which was relatively lucky if (Y/n) had to fall at all. Her stomach hadn't been jostled, she felt okay and she could feel the baby wriggling too which was a good sign.
"Let me take a look at you." It sounded more like a question than a statement and (Y/n) found herself nodding along.
She felt okay, she had had a lot worse over the years and she had done more damage with harsher falls. But she had never been pregnant before and (Y/n) knew it would put both their minds at ease if Hen just gave her a once over. Just to be safe.
"Both of you, walk it off and get back in there." Gerrard pointed over at them before he grabbed the radio on his shoulder and presumably sent a snarky order out to someone else or to dispatch.
"I need to examine her-"
"Do you see her screaming in pain, Wilson? She's fine, get up and get back to work before this whole place goes under. Now!"
Twisting her head, (Y/n) looked up at Hen and tried her best to smile and hold back a flinch. She was fine, as long as she could get up with no obvious pains she would be okay to carry on.
(Y/n) gratefully accepted Hen's arm, smiling weakly when Hen took her weight and easily helped her up to her feet. She could feel her head starting to swim and float when she was up on her feet and her knees trembled but after a few seconds, her body started to level itself back out again. Just like hitting a reset button on a computer.
(Y/n) dusted her gloves across her jacket and over her knees, getting rid of the sprinkles of glass that dropped down on them like the first fall of snow. She was okay. She didn't even feel sick or any pain anywhere and when she danced her hand over her abdomen, she smiled. The baby was wriggling and kicking. He was fine too.
"Are you sure you're good? If not tell me and I'll-"
"No, no fussing, come on we've had worse." If the baby was moving and (Y/n) didn't have any pain except for a few twinges and bruises, she was good to go. They were in the middle of an emergency and Hen had a job to do, (Y/n) wasn't going to get in the way and distract her and provoke Gerrard's wrath.
"What the Hell are you doing?!"
A shiver tore down (Y/n)'s spine and her eyes darted around, frantically trying to find where that voice came from. She wasn't sure whether to be relieved or frightened when she realised it was Evan calling out to her. If it was Gerrard again she would be in for a disciplinary talk, but knowing it was one of her partners only made (Y/n)'s worry spike.
Evan stormed over to them like a God walking amongst humans and the demanour glowing around him made him tower over the people he bypassed to get to them.
His clenched hands uncurled and reached out for (Y/n) the moment she was within reach. He gripped her upper arms, pulling her closer whilst simultaneously nudging her back so she was away from the building in case a secondary explosion rocked the street.
"Evan-"
"You shouldn't be anywhere near the fire-" Something dawned on him and flashed across his pupils before he was looking her over frantically. "Are you okay?"
"The blast knocked us off our feet-"
"But I'm okay." (Y/n) finished for Hen, looking between the pair of them before she gripped Evan's shoulders to try and get him to look back at her.
"Get back in the truck."
"Stop this mother's meeting and get your asses back to work I've already told you once. Top floors are evacuated and simmered down, we need that ground floor fire under control before the foundations are burned to cinders." Gerrard's voice barked like a rabid dog and his teeth flared and flashed in the glimmering sunlight trying to break through the smoke.
He pointed his hand towards the building before he clapped his hand and pointed someone nearby to turn on the hose on the truck. They needed this situation under control, standing chatting in the street wasn't going to help.
(Y/n) shivered when Evan's voice cut across the top of her ear, telling her again to get in the truck.
His hand found her lower back and he pointed her in the right direction. He didn't care if she sat in the truck or the ambulance. Hell, Evan didn't care if (Y/n) sat on the pavement or if she went and sat with some of the other medics and helped the casualties. He just needed her away from this building so her and their baby weren't in any danger.
He tried to get (Y/n) to walk over to the truck but he felt her shudder and back up into his chest when Gerrard looked directly at her. He didn't say anything, but he didn't need to. The blazing fury in his eyes told them all if they didn't move right now, he was going to be spitting feathers and his next words wouldn't be pretty.
(Y/n) didn't know what to do. She didn't want to stand back and do nothing, but she couldn't go near the building until it was cleared and coded as safe. And she could feel Evan's hands on her arms, squeezing tightly before he nudged her to walk in the opposite direction.
Evan didn't want to, but he let go of (Y/n) once she took a few steps away. His body rattled in frustration, panic and an overload of adrenaline that was fueling his anger.
His fingers shook through his gloves as he reached down and grabbed the hose, tossing it over his right shoulder so he could get back to work.
"(Y/l/n) where the Hell are you going-"
"She's not going near that fire." Evan tilted his head back and kept his eyes straight ahead, trying not to spare one little glance towards the shorter man on his right who was grating on his last nerve.
"(Y/l/n) I gave you a direct order and you, Buckley, aren't in charge here. Get back to your original post."
The hose on Evan's shoulder slid down to the crook of his elbow and he turned sharply until he was face to face with Gerrard. His left hand reached out and gave him a rough shove in the shoulder while his nose crinkled and his jaw locked so tightly Evan thought his teeth were going to break.
"Your orders are bullshit."
"Think carefully about your next words."
"Your orders are bullshit and violate the handbook by putting a pregnant worker at risk. And by picking on her because she's pregnant, you're discriminating against her. She stays in the truck or I go and get a second opinion from Captain Truman, this is his callout, not yours."
Evan was begging for a fight. His shoulders tensed up and his head tilted back as he prayed, willed, hoped, for Gerrard to disagree with him. He wanted Gerrard to bite, to snap and shout and scream and show his true colours because then Evan had some leverage.
He could go over to the Captain of the 138 and ask for his orders and tell him there was a worker on this scene who was pregnant and in the line of duty. The 138 got to this callout first and it made their Captain the lead in this operation, he had the discretion and the control here.
Evan could see a vein throbbing in Gerrard's neck and he was quite sure that his new Captain was on the verge of combusting like a molecule. But he didn't. Gerrard didn't say anything. All he did was point towards the building, and Evan took that as his win.
He knew they would be having words when they got back to the station, but he was already formulating his defence and if that didn't work, Evan would be finding the number for Chief Simmons.
He wasn't going to stand for this any longer.
***
(Y/n) could feel her head beginning to swim as she leaned to the left until her burning temple was slumped against the window.
Her head was pounding. Her stomach was starting to ache and cramp and she was sure it was because they had skipped lunch and seeing Evan interact with Gerrard had put her on edge.
She felt Eddie's hand on her thigh and after a few seconds, she realised he was leaning down against her and his lips pressed into her temple.
Evan was sitting opposite them with a face like thunder. His jaw was grinding so much they could all hear the joint clicking back and forth. His hands were clenched into fists and pushing down onto his thighs, creating indents in his trousers. His knees were bent out to the sides and his back was straight against the seat while he stared out the window, not looking at any of them.
They all knew he and Gerrard were going to be having an argument when they rolled up at the station. Everyone was anticipating and dreading it. Hen was ready to call the Chief herself for back up. Chimney was ready to stop a fight from breaking out and debating whether or not to call Bobby to diffuse the situation.
And Eddie was waiting for anything. He was waiting for them to pull up at the station so he could tell Evan to go home. Go talk to Bobby. Talk to the Chief on his own, just avoid an argument at all costs. Arguing would only set Gerrard on the rest of them and if Evan spoke out of line, Gerrard would have his neck for it.
But Eddie couldn't help but worry about their girlfriend. She hadn't spoken since the fire had been put out and they were all cleared to head back to the station. She slumped in her seat in the truck and seemed to switch off completely and that wasn't like her.
Everyone jumped like they had been shocked when the truck started to reverse into the station.
They barely managed to fling their belts off before Gerrard was out the truck and his voice was compelling them forward.
"Everyone out. Now."
(Y/n) could see stars in front of her eyes when she tried to stand up. Her knees were shaking and her stomach felt like it was trying to drop down to her feet. And her back, oh her back right between her hips was aching with every throb of her heartbeat. She must have landed funny during the blast and taken a harsher landing than she thought.
She kept one hand on her stomach and used the other as leverage to slowly climb down from the truck.
"Alright, now everyone listen up."
Her limbs began to shake as she moved to stand in between her boys. Part of (Y/n)was desperate to run and hide. To hurry up to the kitchen or lock herself in the toilets to be away from Gerrard because this wasn't going to be good.
He was going to direct most of his anger towards her and Evan. He would give them all clean up duty, give them hard and pointless tasks, make them feel worthless. He was going to punish them for his own mistakes that he had made on purpose.
Tilting her head down, (Y/n) looked down at her boots and shuffled her weight from one foot to the other. She curled her right hand around the back of Eddie's bicep and leaned into him while her other hand rested on her stomach, something she hated to do in front of Gerrard, but right now she didn't care.
She felt sick. The baby was twisting and kicking and there was a dull ache she couldn't ignore.
She silently prayed for the baby to stay still so she could concentrate, but it didn't help. All (Y/n) could focus on was the pain in her back, the unusual ache in her stomach and her heartbeat that was thumping throughout every inch of her skin.
"Now that was a shit-show out there and every one of you ought to be ashamed." Gerrard's voice boomed around the station and echoed back to him, but (Y/n) barely heard him over her pulse rushing through her ears.
Panic and terror clawed their way into (Y/n)'s heart when a rather strong pain tore through her abdomen. She pressed her palm down harder on her stomach and twisted herself to the right so she could press her forehead into Eddie's bicep. She didn't care if Gerrard noticed and called her out on being so close to one of her partners.
She didn't feel well.
His words continued to rocket through the air and send them all reeling and most of them either looked up at the roof beams or stared down at their shoes to avoid his horrid gaze.
(Y/n) closed her eyes and tried to take deep breaths through her nose but her shoulders tensed up when another pain ignited in her stomach and she realised it was similar to a cramp.
Her knees bent forward and she pushed down like she was trying to squat, although (Y/n) wasn't sure what she was doing or if she was trying to sit down or not. She was just trying to make the pain go away. Her teeth sank down into her lower lip but it didn't stop a small sound from escaping and she tugged on Eddie's hand while her other arm bound into her bump, pushing down to relieve the pain.
"Oow," Her face meshed into Eddie's arm causing her tears to trickle down onto his arm and she felt his free hand quickly gripping her left arm to stop her from going down to the floor.
"Hey, hey what's wrong? What's happening?" Eddie's nails scratched into (Y/n)'s elbow to try and keep her upright and his eyes flitted from her to Evan who was quick to hold onto her hips.
"Oh for God's sake what's the problem now?" Gerrard's hands found his hips and his foot began to tap against the polished floor. "If you're gonna start this (Y/l/n) then go home-"
"She needs a doctor." Hen snapped defensively before she turned her back on him and moved to stand beside Eddie, looking over at her friend.
They weren't going to let him belittle (Y/n) right now when she was clearly in agony and something was wrong. When she had her frequent nosebleeds he taunted her and made her feel like a child. He made everyone afraid to speak out if they felt ill or if they had a problem, but (Y/n) especially. She didn't dare complain or say anything because Gerrard wanted any excuse to tell her she was weak and if she was pregnant then she shouldn't be here. But this was different.
Evan was sure he heard Gerrard mutter "I don't fucking believe this," under his breath but when the Captain stormed off towards the bench, Evan felt a little better. He knew Gerrard was going to stay and watch, waiting for his moment to strike and tell them off or try and bark out an order, but everyone would ignore him for the time being.
"Okay, let's sit you down, hm?"
(Y/n) kept her face meshed into Eddie's arm, trying to stifle her tears but she managed to nod. She felt him move round so he and Evan both had one of her arms each and they slowly lowered down to their knees with (Y/n) between them.
Once she was down on her knees, she leaned over and tried to bury her face against Evan's thighs. The compressing weight on her stomach made her feel a bit better, but a groan mixed with a whine burned at the back of her throat when Eddie carefully reeled her back up. He couldn't examine her like that.
"What hurts, baby what's wrong?" Evan gently cupped (Y/n)'s chin and tilted her head back so she was looking up at him through tears.
"I- there, hurts there." She shakily moved Evan's hand from her arm to the lower side of her abdomen and her words set his heart rocketing in his chest.
He had been praying she wouldn't say something like that. He hoped she would have some sort of back pain or stomach ache, but not something to do with the baby. They couldn't have an issue now with the baby when everything had gone smoothly up to now.
"Let me look." Eddie's voice was soft and he glanced between both partners before he shuffled round so he was in front of (Y/n) with Evan pressed up on his right side.
He managed a weak smile when Hen grabbed a medic bag from the truck and placed it down beside him.
His hands shook as he reached out for (Y/n)'s stomach and started to prod around. He pressed the heel of his hand into various parts of her abdomen, trying to feel how the baby was laid and if he could feel anything out of place.
Part of him was hoping to feel a hernia because at least that wouldn't be an issue with the baby.
"Okay, let's check your BP."
He slid the strap up (Y/n)'s right arm that he placed over his thighs and clipped an oxygen pulse monitor on her index finger. He waited a few moments until the monitor beeped and his brow arched when he saw the numbers.
"Pulse and BP are high, I just wanna take a quick listen." Eddie's words confused (Y/n) until she watched him find a stethoscope in the bag and he softly lifted her shirt to reveal her abdomen to his eyes. "Baby's heartbeat is a bit low."
His words made (Y/n)'s shoulders quake and she leaned into Evan, unable to smother a sob.
She curled her left hand around Evan's arm, feeling his other hand cupping the back of her neck while she pressed her face into his shoulder as if trying to hide away would make her feel any better. Her right hand moved down to her stomach, pushing down to try and take away the cramps and she pushed up on her knees to lean more into Evan.
"No, no-" Eddie hooked the stethoscope around his neck before he reached out for (Y/n), grabbing her arms with alarming force. "Hen get the ambulance fired up. Baby, we need to take you down to the emergency room."
"W-why? Eddie, what's wrong?" (Y/n) didn't dare ask but she could see the panic in his eyes and the way he kept cracking his jaw and biting his lower lip. He was trying to put on his calm face, his medic mode to stop her and Evan from panicking, but it wasn't working.
They both watched Eddie's eyes dart down (Y/n)'s body before he held her gaze again. "You're bleeding and the baby's heartbeat is low, you need a scan."
Evan's fingers punctured into the back of (Y/n)'s neck and his chin perched on her shoulder so he could look down her back. Sure enough, he could see the blood patching into the back of her trousers and inner thighs. Blood loss and a low heartbeat meant there was some sort of internal problem, something wrong with the baby. They needed to get a scan to see what was going on and sort this before any lasting damage occurred.
Leaning over, Eddie held (Y/n)'s upper arms and went to try and help her up, but he stopped and looked over his right shoulder when he saw who (Y/n) was staring at.
She had locked eyes with Hen who wasn't moving towards the ambulance. Eddie told her they needed to go, either she or Chimney needed to drive the ambulance. Why weren't they moving?
"The blast, from the building fire today⊠we- we got knocked down." Hen looked between (Y/n) and the boys, guilt, panic and fear swirling in her pupils that looked like black holes.
"You fell?"
"I- it was only a tumble, I didn't- I felt fine-" (Y/n) clutched Evan's arms tighter, meshing her cheek into his shoulder as tears drenched her face.
Was this her fault? Had something happened because of the fall? She had felt fine, it wasn't even a proper fall, she just got knocked down on her back. That was it. She got up and dusted down and felt normal save for a few bruises, she didn't land on her stomach or bash her side or anything that would suggest there might be damage to the baby.
A sob bubbled past her lips while Evan tilted his head down to kiss the top of her head, carding his fingers through her hair to try and calm her down. This wasn't her fault.
"He didn't let me assess her." Hen turned on her heels and jogged towards the ambulance before she said something she shouldn't.
She should have insisted. She should have checked (Y/n) over anyway even if Gerrard told them both not to. She should have sent (Y/n) over to the paramedics on site and made sure she got checked, they might have picked something up or in the very least told (Y/n) to go down to the emergency room to be safe.
Anger seeped through every inch of Eddie's body but he forced himself to look down at (Y/n). If he looked over at his Captain he was going to lose control and start a fight that would get him suspended.
"Buck, up. It might be a placental abruption, we need to go."
Nodding, Evan slid his hands down to (Y/n)'s waist and looped his arms tightly around her. He let her shuffle further into his chest with her arms around his neck and with Eddie's hands on her hips, they both slowly pulled her up to her feet, sandwiching her between them. They could feel how badly (Y/n) was shaking and it was clear she wasn't going to be able to walk very far in this state.
They made an odd shuffle towards the ambulance but Evan's head snapped up to lock eyes with Gerrard when the Captain spoke.
"Wilson drives, Diaz goes. I'm not having my whole team disappear on this field trip. Han, Buckley, fall back."
That was a punishment. That was because Evan had spoken out against him earlier and pulled the rule book on him. This was Gerrard trying to get payback and his way of insulting them because he didn't understand their relationship. If Bobby was here he wouldn't hesitate to find cover for the remaining shift and let all of them go down to the hospital.
"You fucking caused this! We're taking her to hospital-"
"If you go there will be a record of action on your file and I can suspend you for your disobedience today Buckley."
Again, that wasn't fair and that was a punishment Gerrard couldn't enforce. Evan knew the rules. It was a record of conversation first and he couldn't be suspended on the spot without talking to the Chief, especially if Gerrard didn't have any backing or reasoning beforehand.
"After what you've done? I'm calling the union rep and the Chief from the hospital. We'll see who's ass gets fired for this." Eddie locked eyes with Gerrard for the longest moment before he turned away to face his partners again. Gerrard had put (Y/n) and their baby at risk, he wasn't getting away with this.
They all heard Chimney holler "All in," while he opened the back doors to the ambulance and it was clear what he was saying. They were all taking (Y/n) to the hospital. He wasn't waiting here for news, he was riding shotgun and taking one of his family to see a doctor. Hen wouldn't be coming back on shift until she knew if (Y/n) was alright or not. And the boys were staying with their girl.
(Y/n) managed to lift her head from Evan's arm to look between him and Eddie. She could see the thunder on their faces and the way Eddie's lips were snarling while Evan's lips were pursed and tense. But they both softened when they looked down at her.
Evan's arms squeezed around her and Eddie kissed the back of her head was they carefully eased her up into the ambulance.
They were going to look after her. And they were going to make Gerrard pay for what he'd done to them all.
àŒșââââââââââââââââàŒ»
She wasn't going to go to the wedding. As a matter of fact, she made sure she had plans for that weekend that she was supposed to be in Switzerland so she could use them as an excuse to why she couldn't be there for the wedding.
Then Nico did everything but get on his hands and knees to beg her to come since she is one of his close friends. How could she say no to those big doe eyes that the captain of the Devils has? Even she's not immune to those eyes of his.
It's a beautiful day when she arrives for the wedding. Nico waits for her by baggage claim when she walks into Bern Airport after getting off the plane that brought her to Switzerland. She smiles and runs up to her close friend. Despite everything that happened right after the new year, she and Nico stayed close.
Well, as close as they could be while she was busy avoiding one of his teammates.
When she gets to Nico, she wraps her arms around him. "So happy you could come," Nico tells her as they back away from each other. "Mia is even excited that you're here."
"Nico, I can't ever say no to either of you," she teases. "I'm happy that I came too though. Forgot how beautiful it is here."
She grabs her suitcase and duffel bag before she walks outside to Nico's car. "So, all the guests are at the hotel already since the rehearsal dinner is tonight on the roof," he tells her as they load her stuff into the car. "There's probably enough time for you to take a nap if you want to take one since I know you're a big napper after you travel." She playfully punches his shoulder as soon as she's settled in the passenger's seat. "I'm just saying that you came in eight hours before the dinner so you have time to sleep if you want!"
"You don't have to call me a 'big napper'," she retorts with a smile on her face. Nico sticks his tongue out at her. "Oh, how grown up. Aren't you getting married tomorrow?"
"And my fiancé finds it cute when I stick my tongue out at her."
"Doesn't work on me, Nico. Hate to break it to you."
After about twenty minutes of driving, Nico pulls up to the hotel. She looks up at the building with a sigh.
The entire drive, her mind has been on her ex-boyfriend. She knows that he'll be here, but she doesn't know if he's already here.
Nico turns the car off as soon as he finds a parking spot. She sighs and unbuckles her seatbelt. She waits to get out though. She doesn't know how she feels about running into Jack, but right now she's very anxious.
It's not that they ended on bad terms. She just couldn't watch him keep playing and risking long term damage to his shoulder.
He kept forcing himself to get back on the ice before his body was ready and he wasn't able to heal correctly. She couldn't bear to watch him keep hurting himself, so she walked away.
Of course she kept tabs on him throughout the rest of the season after she walked away in January. It broke her heart to miss the Stadium Series game because she was looking forward to seeing both him and Luke play. She was ecstatic when she saw online that he was going to be getting surgery on the shoulder that he hurt in the game against Chicago.
She didn't reach out though. She didn't think she had the right.
"I know you're worried about seeing him," Nico states. "I made sure that your rooms were on different floors so you won't see each other until later. He, um ..." he trails off. "He tells me all the time how much he wishes he listened to you and let his body heal."
"He only keeps saying that because he wishes he never lost me," she comments as she blinks away the tears that have formed in her eyes. "I walked away because I couldn't keep watching him hurt himself to play a sport. I know he loves it, but he loved it more than he loved me so I walked away."
"He got surgery back in April," Nico tells her. "Before the season even ended to get a head start on his recovery. He started doing physical therapy two weeks ago so he's doing well. He'll get back on the ice in a month. I told him to take it easy."
A tear rolls down her cheek and she quickly wipes it away. "Why couldn't he just do this sooner?" she says. Her voice is so shaky that she can barely speak.
Nico grabs her hand. "He needed to lose you to realize that what he was doing was not okay," he replies. "I know how hard it's been for you. Both of you. I think that the two of you should talk this weekend. For both your sakes."
She shakes her head and looks at Nico. "I don't know if I can face him after walking away from him," she cries. "You didn't see the look on his face when I left the apartment that day, Nico. You didn't see how much I hurt him when he was already in physical pain. I don't know if he even wants to talk to me after that. I kicked him when he was already down."
He pulls her across the armrest and into a hug. She cries into his shoulder and grasps onto his t-shirt. "He's worried that you won't talk to him," he admits. "Just so you know. If you want to talk to him, do it. You both need some closure."
The worst part is that she knows it too. She walked away and didn't reply to a single one of his texts or calls. She moved to Philadelphia to her brother's apartment so she was just far enough away that he couldn't drive to her but close enough if something happened to him.
She never stopped caring, and she should probably tell him that.
With a nod, she pulls away. "Okay," she sighs. "I'll talk to him. Only if he wants to talk to me though."
â§ïœ„ïŸ: *â§ïœ„ïŸ:*
She doesn't talk to Jack at the rehearsal dinner. As a matter of fact, she doesn't even see him at the rehearsal dinner. There aren't a ton of people at the dinner either so she thought that she would see him. It surprises her that she didn't.
Getting ready the next afternoon though, she knows that today will be the day she sees him. At least she'll look her best when he sees her for the first time since she walked out on that cold January day. Same goes for him. Jack's always looked good in a suit and tie. She wonders which one of his game day suits he'll be in today.
Three rolls around and she heads from her second floor hotel room down to the first floor. She'd walk down the stairs if her feet weren't already killing her from the heels she has on.
The ceremony is taking place in the ballroom because of how many guests will be attending. The reception and dinner are taking place up on the rooftop at five so Nico and his new wife can get some pictures taken up there before everyone joins them.
Elevator doors open and she's met with the one person she's been wanting to avoid until the reception tonight. Jack freezes like a deer in headlights, but his eyes drink her in as she steps onto the elevator.
It's not like she's wearing something very revealing. The top of her red dress hugs her body, shoves off her curves, and pushes her breasts up a little bit. Her loose sleeves hang off her shoulders. The skirt falls to her knees and is kind of puffy.
"Uh, hi," Jack breathes out as the door closes behind her. "You, um, look good."
"Hi," she replies as she runs her fingers through her curls. "You too. Um, look good." His red tie with his black and white suit matches her red dress. Nico definitely told him what color that she was going to wear.
His eyes flicker down her body again and she feels self-conscious of the way her dress hugs her body. She crosses her arms over her chest and prays that the doors open soon.
Jack quickly picks up on how uncomfortable she is. "Sorry, I didn't mean to-"
"Stare?" she interrupts. "It's fine." The elevator dings and the doors slide open behind her. "I'll see you around."
She quickly makes her escape. Her heels are muffled by the carpet but she finds the room that she knows Nico is in.
After she knocks a handful of times, the door opens. Nico is the one that opens the door. He looks handsome in his suit and tie. He has a white rose hanging out of his flap on his jacket. "Oh, don't you look nice dressed up," she comments.
Nico rolls his eyes and lets her in the room. "Oh, shush," Nico retorts. She looks behind him as she walks into the room to and sees his older brother, his dad, Timo, and Jonas.
"Hi," she says to everyone in the room. "Just needed to come talk to Nico for a second. Won't keep him very long. I swear."
"What's going on?" Nico questions behind her.
She turns to face him. "I ran into Jack," she replies. "Wearing a red tie. Want to tell me why he was wearing a red tie when I'm wearing a red dress?"
He shoots her a smile. "Purely coincidental," Nico tells her. "He does play on a team that wears red and black so many he was missing the team when he picked out his tie."
"Nico Hischier, I'm going to kill you on your wedding day if you don't start talking in the next two seconds," she snaps.
ïżœïżœI donât know what you want me to say,â Nico laughs as he throws his hands up in the air in surrender. âI have no idea why Jackâs wearing a red tie. I didnât tell him what you were wearing if thatâs why you came marching in here to yell at me.â
She sighs and rubs her fingers through her curls. âOkay,â she replies. âI think Iâm just losing it or something. Kind of freaking out.â
âHave you talked to him?â asks Timo. She looks over Nicoâs shoulder to look at him. âI mean, it might solve that unresolved tension between you. Itâs so thick that I can feel it when heâs not even in the room.â
With a blink of her eyes, she says, âI canât believe I never thought of talking to him. Wow.â
Timo rolls his eyes and Nico takes over the conversation. âLook, I know youâre avoiding him because you think he doesnât want to talk to you,â he begins to say. âBut even Timo and Seigs can attest to this, Jack wants to talk to you. Seriously. Heâs nervous you wonât talk to him. Youâll be in the same area for the rest of the day. Please say more than just âyou look goodâ to him.â
She groans in slight frustration. âYou are insufferable,â she tells her close friend. âGood luck Mia.â
Thereâs laughter behind her as she walks out of the room to get to where the ceremony is taking place in one of the larger rooms.
Itâs almost like a very large conference room with a lot of chairs. There has to be nearly a hundred chairs in the room. She greets Nicoâs mom and sister as well as some of his Devils teammates.
Across the room, she sees Jack talking to his brothers. All three of them look very handsome. Thatâs when she realizes that Jackâs arm isnât in a sling like he was the last time she saw a picture of him. She was too shocked earlier in the elevator to notice that he doesnât have on a sling. His hair is a little longer than it was a few months ago. He smiles at something Quinn said.
She takes her seat right behind the Devils, sitting right behind Jack of all people. He sits between Haula and Merc.
When she goes to say something, the ceremony starts.
Talking to Jack is just going to have to wait.
â§ïœ„ïŸ: *â§ïœ„ïŸ:*
Thereâs an hour between when the ceremony ends and the reception begins so Nico and Mia can take pictures up on the roof. She needs to touch up her makeup since she decided to cry while Nico was saying his vows. Her best friend grew up so much since they met back at the 2017 NHL draft.
A lot of the guests have already made their way to the roof when she gets up there. She grabs a glass of champagne from a tray that a waiter is holding and takes a big gulp of it to prepare her for the night to come.
She spots Dawson, Luke, Jesper, and Simon all standing by the railing. No Jack so itâs safe to approach despite his little brother standing there. She hopes that Luke doesnât hate her guts for breaking his brotherâs heart.
When she approaches the group of Devils, Dawson gets excited. âOh my God, I didnât think you were coming,â he says as he drapes an arm over her shoulders.
âAnd miss a Swiss wedding?â she laughs. âAbsolutely not. I wasnât about to skip out on Nicoâs wedding.ïżœïżœïżœ The boys laugh, even Luke. Her eyes fall on the youngest of the Hughes boys. âAnd how are you, baby Hughes? Still settling in well with the team?â
Luke nods with a smile. âThe guys have been very welcoming,â he tells her. âHelped me out of that slump I was in.â
She mirrors his smile. âThatâs great,â she says. âGlad you were able to come in and get right to it. Being a Calder nominee isnât an easy feat so I wanted to come congratulate you on your rookie season.â
âThank you.â
Out of the corner of her eye, she notices Jack. He stands with Dougie, Dawsy, Haula, and Nico. Mia stands with her arm hooked with her new husbandâs.
Luke, Dawson, and Nemec all walk away to get another drink. Jesper stands next to her. âHow many times have you been told to talk to him?â Bratter asks.
âToo many so please donât-â
âIâm not. I was just going to offer to go get him if you did want to talk to him.â
She sighs and finishes her glass of champagne. âI want to talk to him but do you really think heâll listen to me if I apologize?â she comments.
âI do,â Bratter replies. She looks up at him. âI mean it. He has been kicking himself for months. I know he misses you. I donât know if he misses your relationship or just you in his life but he misses you. I think talking to him is worth it.â
She turns her head to look at Jack. He looks happy and she doesnât want to ruin that. âWhat if I just upset him?â she questions. âI donât want to ruin his happiness.â
âHeâs not truly happy without you,â Jesper says. âTalk to him. I think heâll listen to what you have to say. Maybe he will even offer his own apology to you. Iâll be right back.â
Then he walks away. She watches him walk up to Jack and say something to him. She stands straight up and sighs when Jack looks over at her. She puts a smile on her face and heads over to the group.
Itâs now or never. Itâs early in the evening so neither of them are drunk yet. Sheâs had just enough alcohol to give her the courage to have this conversation with Jack.
All eyes are on her, but her eyes are on Jack. âHi,â she breathes out. âCan we talk for a second? Please? Alone?â
Jack nods and hands his drink to Dougie. She shoots a smiling Nico a glare as she turns and walks inside so theyâre away from the prying eyes of Jackâs teammates and her mutual friends that she has with Nico. Theyâre all very nosy.
She finds a little room off to the side that she walks into with a sigh. She picks at the skin around her fingernails out of nerves.
This is truly it. The next few minutes are either going to make or break whatever relationship or friendship they have left. She bites the inside of her cheek as she turns and faces Jack.
âWhat did you want to-â Jack begins to say before she interrupts him.
âI want to apologize,â she quickly replies. âFor that night. For ignoring all your calls and texts after. I shouldnât have given you that ultimatum. Not at that moment, anyway. I caused you emotional pain while you were in so much physical pain.â
Jackâs face falls into a frown as she talks. He starts to shake his head the longer she talks. âNo, you had every right to give me that ultimatum,â he tells her. âI pushed myself way too hard and losing you opened my eyes to just how hard I was pushing myself. To what I was putting my body through. I didnât understand why at first but now I do. Iâm sorry that I saw that too late.â
Tears form in her eyes at the softness of his voice. She wasnât expecting this Jack when she talked to him.
âI thought youâd be mad,â she admits. âI thought youâd want to yell at me for walking away. For ending it.â
âI was mad,â Jack says. âBelieve me. I was so mad that I pushed myself even harder for a few weeks. Then there was setback after setback and I finally understood why.â
The tears that formed in her eyes roll down her cheeks, painting her skin black with eyeliner. She shouldâve grabbed her waterproof eyeliner but she didnât.
She stares across the room at her ex. Neither of them say a word for a second, before she asks the question she has wanted to know the answer to for nearly six months.
âWhy did you do it?â she asks. âWhy did you have to push yourself so hard and risk long term damage? Donât tell me itâs because you love hockey and put your all into the sport. You shouldnât have to push yourself to the point of surgery.â
Jack looks down at his feet and she raises her eyebrows. She presses her lips in a tight line as she waits for him to respond.
The answer she gets is not the one she was ready for.
âI thought that no one would care about me or love me if I wasnât playing hockey,â Jack mumbles. âAll anyone has talked about this season is me and my brothers. Hughes Bowl, me getting to 100 points after hitting 99 last season, whatever about me and Luke playing together. It seemed like no one would give a shit about me if I had stopped mid-season to heal. It seemed like everyone would write me off as weak or get mad at me for taking care of my shoulder. So I pushed you away and pushed myself to play until we got eliminated from contention so no one could blame me for missing playoffs. I didnât want to be the reason we missed playoffs, but it feels like I am anyway.â
She frowns at his response. She had no idea that he felt this way.
Thereâs some space between them so she takes a few steps forward so she stands in front of him. âYou could have talked to me,â she softly tells him. âI was willing to support you through whatever you needed to do to be healthy. Yet you seemed to care more about hockey than me.â
He lifts his head up and thatâs when she sees the tears in his eyes. She pouts at the sight.
âI didnât want you to see me at my lowest, and Iâm sorry for pushing you away,â Jack comments. âI love you and I didnât want you to see that side of me. I love you more than I have ever loved hockey. I shouldâve listened to you when you told me to rest and I didnât. I should have.â He pauses for a second and meets her eyes. âI never should have let you walk out that door.â
She reaches up to dry his cheeks when the tears begin to roll. âYou know that everyone would still love and care about you if you had just pressed pause on the season,â she tells him. âEveryone that loves you wouldâve supported you if you just let your body heal. No one likes seeing a player push himself to surgery. I would have stayed and helped you instead of loving and supporting you from afar.â
Jack leans down and rests his forehead on hers. His eyes are closed and her hands rest on his jaw. Her thumbs trace his cheekbones and her eyes remain on his face.
âIâm sorry,â Jack softly says.
âIâm sorry for walking out on you when you needed me,â she tells him. âI kicked you when you were down and it wasnât fair of me to do that to you. Iâm sorry I broke your heart.â
He wraps his hands around her wrists before he pulls them down so he can lace their fingers together. He doesnât pull his forehead away and she doesnât move either.
âYou never broke my heart,â he whispers to her. âI broke yours by choosing hockey over you. I never wanted you to feel like I loved a sport more than you and thatâs what I did. Itâs my fault.â
She shakes her head and pulls back. Jackâs eyes open and he looks at her. His blue eyes shine with tears. âEven after everything, I still love you,â she admits. âI donât believe that you can break my heart, Jack Hughes.â
He lets out a light laugh and shakes his head. âSame for you,â he tells her.
A small smile forms on her lips as she looks up at him. He lets one of her hands go to wipe away her tears. His thumb comes away black and he wipes her eyeliner on his black pants.
âCan I get a redo?â Jack asks. âOn that ultimatum that you gave me? I have an answer for you.â
She bites the inside of her cheek before she asks in reply, âIs it going to be me? Or is it going to be your career?â
âItâs you, baby,â Jack instantly replies as he lifts his hand to cup her jaw. âItâll always be you.â
The smile on her face grows. She licks her bottom lip as he pulls her in for a soft kiss. She hesitates for a second before she returns the kiss.
Jack drops her other hand so he can cup the other side of her jaw. Her fingers grasp at his open suit jacket so he canât get too far. She wraps her arms around his torso under his jacket.
He takes a few steps forward so her back is pressed against a wall. She gasps as soon as her back hits the cool, smooth surface, but she doesnât break the kiss. Jack leans down into her to deepen the already deep kiss. She presses herself flush against him.
His hands slide down to her waist before they slip behind her back. She feels his fingers graze the zipper and thatâs when she pulls back. âJack,â she sighs. âNot now.â
âLater though?â
âWeâll see,â she replies. âI think we should go back out. Iâm sure Nicoâs looking for us.â
Jack takes a few steps back to fix himself. She takes the moment to make sure sheâs presentable as well.
With a sigh, she grabs Jackâs hand and they leave the room. Their fingers are laced together as they rejoin the reception. âSo, how are we going to explain this to our friends?â Jack asks.
âWeâll just tell them that we got our heads out of our asses and apologized to each other,â she replies. âThat we still love each other. I think saying goodbye gave us a second chance to do this the right way.â
They turn a corner and find themselves back on the roof with the rest of the party. âIt did,â Jack says. She looks up at him. âAre you my girlfriend again? Or do I have to get down on my knees to beg you like I did the first time?â
She shakes her head with a laugh. âIâd like to see you get on your knees for a different reason so yes, I guess Iâm youâre girlfriend again,â she tells him.
Jack presses a quick kiss to her lips, but every single one of their friends has already noticed.
âAbout damn time!â Nico shouts from across the room. A few of the Devils cheer for them and she steps even closer to her boyfriend.
______________________________________________- [PT2]
6YEARS LATERSÂ
You watched your sons play happily in the streets of Chicago. You no longer lived as a kook, but you were happy with your children.
Music echoed through the streets as the boys were with their friends while you sunbathed peacefully.
"Mom, look what I can do!" said Elijah, making animal shadows with his hands.
You laughed and applauded, Dean coming to sit next to you.
Dean and Elijah are twin brothers.
Dean physically resembles you a lot. His eyes are just a little lighter than yours and his hair is not as wavy as yours.
Elijah strongly resembles Rafe, with the same hair, eye color, complexion, smile, EVERYTHING.
But in terms of character, they are completely different. Elijah inherited your character, while Dean has Rafe's character.
They are too young for you to say which one reminds you more of Rafe, but either way, you do your best to make sure they donât become like him.
"When is Harper coming?" asks Dean with hint of frustration in his sad expression.
"She's coming at six-" Dean cuts you off. "How late is she staying with us?" You shrug your shoulders.
Tonight, you're working as a waitress for a high-end event in the north side of Chicago. You don't know what time you'll be home as these events can go on sometimes until three in the morning.
"I don't know Dean, but I'll make sure to come home as soon as possible," you say, gently stroking his hair.
"You always say that, but you come back super late!" The little blond puts his head against your shoulder.
It pains you to hear that because itâs true; sometimes in order to make sure you can make ends meet, you find yourself working overtime.
"I'm sorry, sweetheart," Dean hugs you with his little arms. "I love you, mom." You stroke his back. "I love you too, baby."
âŻ
The event had been going on for over an hour now, and the floors in the luxurious hotel where you were at began to fill up.
You stood up straight and tried to be as pleasant as possible. The atmosphere is enjoyable for the guests.
Each of them flaunts their wealth or talks about business. You recall the parties of this kind you used to attend with your family.
None of them were missed by you, you greet a woman as she starts talking to you.
She's quite attractive, with her medium-length black hair and her brown almond-shaped eyes. She acts as if you were the best friends in the world.
However, she doesn't do anything except talk about her life, thereâs no coherence in what sheâs saying, but you say nothing.
You hope to get at least a tip of $150 at this point.
She looks away from your eyes for a moment to look over your shoulder and smile. She waves her hand, probably attracting someone.
You begin to turn around to leave when you freeze. Bad memories come back one by one to the surface. Your heart beats so loudly in your ears that you can no longer hear.
You apologize and head to the bar, setting down your tray and run to the bathrooms. Rafe was there, he was right in front of you.
He still looks as charismatic and threatening as before. You walk to the sink and splash some water on your face.
And if he had recognized me? Will he make me pay? Will he be angry that I've deprived him of his children for so long? No, impossible that heâs recognized me.
You lift your head and find yourself face to face with him in the mirror. A satisfied smile on his face. You swallow hard and look at him.
His blue eyes are still as beautiful as ever, his shaved hair gives him a charm.
"It's been a long time." He says, locking the door. He advances, and you back away.
He straightens his tie and looks at himself in the mirror. "How's my child?"
You freeze in fear, the stress is at its peak. "I had an abortion." You gasp for air. He chuckles and looks at you. "You ran away just to have an abortion?"
You look at him angrily. "What do you want Rafe?" You tremble and he finally looks at you. "I know my children are somewhere in the streets of Chicago. Judging by your appearance, they must be in the South Side."
"Fuck off, Rafe!" You yell at him in anger. Rafe comes closer and looks at you with anger. "There are people who have disappeared for less than that Y/N. I suggest you lower your damn tone."
Rafe leans forward and tilts his head slightly. "I missed you." He tucks a strand of your hair behind your ear. You shudder at his touch.
"You broke my heart by leaving. How could you do this to me after everything I did for you." He grabs your chin and forces you to look at him.
There was a time when you would have apologized on your knees, but not anymore. "You were violentwith me."
He shrugs nonchalantly. "That happens in every relationship, itâs nothing serious." You look at him, shocked.
"How did you call them?" He asks, folding his arms across his chest. You furrow your brows. "What?..." he massages his temples. "The twins, what have you named them?" You tremble, how does he know?
"I donât know what you mean." Rafe sighs loudly. "Do you really think Iâm here by accident?" You frown, he takes out his phone and unlocks it.
He puts it on the sink, for the past five months he'd known where you live, your job, your friends, and most importantly, where his children were.
"I donât blame you for leaving, Y/N, Iâve spent every day for the past six years thinking about you and the kids." He grabs your chin and forces you to look him in the eyes.
"Iâm going to change, I promise, just give me one more chance to show you how I can be a good father for our kids." He caresses your cheek. "For our family."
You would like to scream at him, tell him to leave, but Rafe isnât stupid. He knows that you wonât because you feel too guilty that the twins donât have a father.
"Alright..." You say, looking into his eyes. "One and last chance." Rafe smiles and kisses your forehead. "Promise."
Rafe hugs you tightly and gently runs his fingers through your hair.
Rafe knew you were going to say yes, he was sure of it, and anyway, if you had refused, he would have made sure you wouldnât be allowed near the children anymore.
Having money works that way.
Rafe knows it will take some time for you to no longer be afraid of him, but he will wait because that is what soulmates do.Â
They always forgive their other half.
tell me about baseball because I know nothing but would like to learn!
FEVER PITCH pro baseball!lip headcanons
TAGS & WARNINGS: mature, 18+. sexual content but non explicit, drinking mention, emotional angst, pregnancy. but also fluff!! silly shenanigans, second chance romance, lip is stupid in love.
AUTHOR'S NOTE: this is my brain child omfg. tysm for sending this ask, honestly. i yapped!!! there was also more to this but i've been adding to it for days and its getting long for hcs so. lmk if anyone wants part 2 teehee
WC: 1.4k
when he was younger lip always played shortstop, his arm was powerful but not quite precise enough to pitch, but he never minded. pitchers have to remember too much, shortstop just falls into the rhythm; watching the pitch, listening to the crack of the bat, and tracking the ball as it rocketed through the field. the two of you met in college, lip played two seasons at university of chicago before transferring to a better athletic program. there was a mutual breakup before parting ways, but whenever he's in town you can't fight the urge to see each other.
he's picked up on the MLB draft straight out of college, after captaining the national championship team, and sent to an affilliate somewhere warm in the south, georgia or maybe louisiana. he calls you often to boast the climate, while you complain about the stress of your masters degree. over time the calls come less frequently, but each conversation feels like no time has passed at all.
it takes three years for lip to work his way up to the big leagues, where he joins the chicago cubs for his rookie season. now, lip plays centerfield. he's a quick runner, and his powerful arm sends balls to their respective bases at record speed. he's efficient, most teams don't stand a chance.
he doesn't know how to tell you he's coming home again, back to chicago. and back to you. you find out from your best friend, who overheard fiona talking about it at patsy's. you two along with fi & veronica find the money for tickets at centerfield, right where lip will be.
fiona whistles through her fingers the second she reaches her seat and waves down her brother, whose cheeks immediately turn bright pink. if a teammate pointed it out he'd surely brush it off as the chilled march wind, but you know him better than that. he greets the four of you nervously, opening up as he gets sight of the smiles you wear. no one cares he didn't tell, your joy at his homecoming tops any negative in your minds.
after the third inning a guest services rep brings the four of you a handful of meal and beverage vouchers, a gift from lip. later you'll learn he'd tried to have your seats upgraded but was denied, too low on the totem pole for that sort of request. so you pile your arms with hot dogs, pretzels, cheese fries, diet coke and fancy ipa brews.
the game flies by, you and fiona sit side by side and shout teases down to lip, watching his face light up. this is the first time you really see his talent, how he's developed as an athlete. he finally has somewhere to put all of that pent up energy he keeps inside, using it to jump up in the ivy wall for a catch, to react as quick as the ball and sprint in the same direction. when he catches the game-winning out, a fly ball straight to centerfield, he tosses it up into the stands. it sails directly to you, tipsy giggles spilling from your lips as you scrawl your phone number onto the white canvas before throwing it back down.
lip wants to fog up the windows of your honda right there in the parking lot but you have the presence of mind to drag him towards his own parked car while he trails sloppy kisses down your neck. the sex is amazing, it always is, but thereâs something different in the way he holds you this time. you pretend not to notice it, until you have a reason to bring it up.
three weeks later, two pregnancy tests sit on the gallaghers bathroom counter. you'd only brought one along, but fiona dug another out of her bedside table drawer when you became anxious at the two pink lines. when the second test reads positive, v offers to call lip for you and you let her.
it's hours before he can get to you, even without a game there's still training, a players meeting, and dinner afterward with franchise sponsors. he's busy, you get it. fi gives you the spare key to his apartmentâa studio unit in a high rise downtown, somewhere you couldn't imagine a gallagher livingâand lip pays for a cab to take you there.
once you lay eyes on the space it becomes a little more believable that lip gallagher lives there. a box spring and mattress are stacked together in one corner, topped with the classic navy blue sheets and two pillows. he has a small couch (loveseat, more like) that you decide to wait on, favoring it over the bed. his tv sits on the floor against the wall, with the remote balanced precariously on top. flipping through channels is a nice, mind numbing activity to soothe you, and you fall asleep after landing on old sitcom reruns.
the sun has long set when lip comes in the door, eyeing your sleeping frame. he decides to let you sleep while he washes the grime of the day from his body. he kneels by you when he's clean and fresh, clothed in nothing but blue gingham boxers. "'ey kid, wake up," he mumbles, smoothing your hair away from your brow. when he sees you blink up at him he continues softly, "y'can live here with me, until the baby is born, m'kay? an' we can decide what we want to do." "about?" "about us."
you smile up at him, he offers you the bed and insists on taking the couch, not allowing himself too much of a good thing. he's already over the moon you want to keep the baby, his baby. he doesn't want to scare you away. he only makes it a week cramped up on that tiny couch. later in your relationship you have something funny to look back on, old photos of lip with his knees tucked up and one arm hanging awkwardly off the cushions.
when he can't stand the couch anymore he orders you a pregnancy pillow, and you order a bedframe, all on his card of course. you don't even need the pillow yet, most nights of your first trimester you're up and down, in and out of the bathroom. each time you come back to bed lip is on his stomach, arms curled around that damn pillow as he rests on it. he says it helps his sore muscles. whatever the reason is you don't really care, the toned expanse of his back makes a good pillow anyway.
you get into a habit of ordering furniture, decorations, and other home goods while lip is away. he doesn't mind, always makes sure you use his card, he wouldn't know what to do with all that money anyway. little by little the studio apartment starts to feel like home, and lip starts to feel more like a serious boyfriend than a hookup turned baby daddy, for lack of better wording.
before you know it the season is over, lip receives a large bonus after the cubs make the playoffs, and the two of you are kissing over a bottle of sparkling cider as you christen your new two-bedroom townhouse, complete with a downstairs office space and large backyard. october turns the leaves beautiful hues, and the calmness of this new neighborhood soothes your mind, your due date in december rapidly approaching.
between the new place, increased proximity during the off-season, and your pregnancy hormones, you find yourself bickering more and more with lip. it comes to a head one night when he shouts at you, and you feel the baby kick in response before you break down completely. the fight was about something small, insignificant. it had started with you talking about baby names. lip isn't sure how he let it spiral this way.
dutifully, with regret painted on his features, he kneels down beside your crumpled form on the bed. he takes your hand, muttering an apology and promising to make things work. then he says softly, "i like lucy. as a name for the baby?" you just stare at him, and he continues, "could be short for lucille. an' you liked olivia for a middle name, yeah?"
"lucille olivia gallagher. it's so pretty, lip, i love it." you smile in awe, reaching out to cup his cheek. "i love you," you say, and now it's lip's turn to stare. but a moment passes and he smiles, gathering your frame into his arms to pull you into his lap. "love you too, pretty girl."
by new years day you have a healthy baby girl in your arms, and a pretty diamond ring on your left hand.
Chapter 5: Eat Humble Pie
One more mistake turns into a lesson learned for Maya.
She climbs into her car before breaking in front of him and drives back home after the party to dwell in her misery.
It was silly of her to make herself available for someone who doesn't take her seriously half of the time. She should have seen it earlier that he's just an asshole, but being blindsided by guys like him is one of her many flaws.
Against her better judgment, she put herself out there for the first time in a long time. He knew that was a huge step for her, and he just had the nerve to dismiss her feelings.
She's not the one to play games with. If Michael can admit that there's something between them, then she's not going to invest more time on this or push for something he doesn't want. Maybe sheâs being a little arrogant, it wouldn't be the first time someone told her that, but this wasnât a one-sided thing. Heâs been definitely reeling her in just as much. She felt that every morning she went into the beef before work, every time they went out for drinks, every time he came over, every call, every text⊠He initiated a lot of those. Who does he think he is to make her feel like she's crazy? Like she made that up in her head? It could be possible, she tries to internalize. Perhaps she latched onto Michael so desperately because he was the only person that made her feel welcomed. It was strange for a long time being back in Chicago and being with him felt like being home.
Her mind jumps back and forth, trying to find a logical explanation. She doesn't find any, but she's sure he has his reasons.
Trying to forget all that and more, itâs not easy.
A week after his birthday, thereâs still a part of her that keeps holding onto all those moments and memories theyâve made together. From painting her room, to the day she took care of him when he got his wisdom teeth removed. To all the many nicknames he gave her. And that time, he dog-sat for Coco when Maya went out of town for a couple of days. Heâd just sent pics and videos of them playing, so she wouldnât worry. Itâs still fresh in her memory the day he invited her to his Sunday Braciole tradition. They werenât as frequent as they used to be since Carmy left, but at least two Sundays a month they got together to cook and eat, and just have a good time with friends and family. For the past two months, she never missed one of those Sundays, but it was a hard pass this week. She got a text from Natalie asking if she was okay, that they missed her and Coco, but she was far from okay. Maya just replied with some bullshit about coming down with something.
Many times sheâs found herself wanting to pick up the phone and call him as she used to. She willingly had to fight that need every day until it disappeared.
One evening, when she comes home after work, pulling up on the driveway, she spots Michael sitting on her front stoop, having a smoke under the light of the porch. Itâs dark and cold and the last thing she wants to do right now is face him, but thereâs no way around it.
âHey,â She mutters, walking up to the door as he puts out his cigarette and stands up.
âHey, can we talk?â His breath manifests in the air, as he exhales that last puff he took.
âDepends on what you have to say,â Maya crosses her arms against her chest.
âJust wanted to say Iâm sorry for being an asshole the other night. I never got to say thank you for the party. That was really nice of you.â
âThat's fine, Michael. I'm over it. I got the message,â she says dryly.
âThis isn't as easy as you think it is.â
âI think it is. Either you want me or you don't. But you can't string someone along for months, and then make them feel like shit for wanting something more. It's fucked up.â
âYeah, I agree it's fucked up. I'm⊠fucked up.â
âI'd say.â
âHey, you're no picnic either, sweetheart.â
âYou're right, I'm not. But at least I'm honest about it. I admit that I can be a little intense and inconsiderate, but I don't try to hide it. You on the other hand hide behind layers and layers of fake smiles and charms and bullshit stories, cause if people were to look closer, they'd see the real Michael. The one that I see.â
âYou're also unbelievably obnoxious, did you know that? You don't know shit about me.â
âKeep telling yourself that.â
âHave you even considered my part in all this, huh? You're Carmy's best friend. I knew you as a kid. How am I supposed to look him in the eye when he comes back in a few weeks and say â hey, by the way, I've been seeing Maya⊠Your Maya. What do you think heâs going to say? He's gonna hate the both of us.â
It's good to know he's considered all those things that didn't cross her mind. Yes, it'd hurt her to know that Carmy could potentially be affected by this. She wouldn't want that either, but no matter what, someone is getting hurt here.
âWell, I haven't thought about it that way, but I was never his to begin with. Iâm my own person. I get to decide who I want. Not you, not him, not anyone. And even if something happened between you and me, itâs not like Iâd rub it on his face.â
âMaya⊠You don't understand. You were everything to him.â
âWere. Youâve just said it. It's been a long time since high school, do you really believe that he's still hung up on me?â
âWhat if he is? What if you two were meant to be together?â
âSaying that out loud over and over won't make it come true. This isn't a fairy tale. And you should know that I haven't really talked to him, not one real conversation, since last year. Last time I heard from him was a text telling me he got the job at Noma. I said hey, congratulations, I'm proud of you⊠And he never spoke to me again. Told him I was moving back here, and crickets. And you know what? I still love him cause he's Carmy, but I'm not in love with him. I wish it was that easy. It'd be great if people could fall in love with the person they were supposed to be with. But it doesn't work that way, Michael.â
âLook, I know it's hard to understand, but I'm not the right guy for you. I'll never be. I thought we could be friends, but I can tell that's not enough for you, is it?â
âNo, it isn't. If you feel that way, you should just go. Itâs cold. Iâm tired. And I shouldâŠâ Defeated, she vaguely gestures at the front door before climbing the porch's steps.
âIt hurts for me too, you know?â He mumbles as she unlocks the door.
âHowâs that my problem?â She scoffs, incredulous at the gall he has of driving up there just to cause her more grief, and guilt-trip her. At least that is how it seems right now to her. âYouâre the one that is too scared to feel anything real. I told you how I feel. I kissed you, for Christâs sake! Am I supposed to feel sorry for you?â
âMaybe if you had stayed away from me, this would have never happened.â
âAre fucking serious right now?â she glances over her shoulder, letting her blood instantly come to a boiling point. âYou gonna put this on me? This is just as much of your fault as it is mine. You knew that I was having a hard time adjusting, that I missed my friends, that I couldn't even turn to my family, and you took advantage of that. Go fuck yourself, Michael! Take your damn pills and go get high like you do every night to forget you're a fucking loser!â
Maya doesn't give him a chance to respond. She slams the door shut, turns on the light, and closes her eyes for a second as Coco comes out of her room to welcome her. The dog whines, happily wagging her tail, circling around Maya's boots.
Leaning down to pet her dog, she places her bag down on the floor. Coco lowers her ears as Maya holds her head and scratches her head.
âI'm so sorry I yelled, baby. Câmere,â she hugs her neck tight, taking some extra comfort from her pup cuddles and kisses for a moment until they both hear a shy knock on the door.
Hoping heâd just leave, she closes her eyes again and ignores it.
Itâs worthless.
He knocks twice again.
And again.
âMaya? Open the door⊠Please. Iâm⊠Iâm sorry. Youâre right, Iâm a fucking loser. Let me try again⊠Please, I didnât meanâŠâ
âWhat do you say, should we open?â She asks Coco as she tilts her head to the door.
âMaybird. Mayhem. Can you hear me? Maya Papaya?â
Itâs crazy to even consider going for round two, but sheâs like a moth to a flame, unable to escape the appeal of that alluring heat.
Drawing a fortifying breath, she stands up and hesitantly unlocks the door.
âI thought I told you to stop calling me that.â
âI'm a lost cause. Can I come in?â
âAre you going to behave?â
âI promise.â
She lets him set foot inside to be warmly welcomed by Coco hoisting her front paws up to his chest, wagging her tail, sticking her head out to lick his face.
âHey, Coco girl. Have you missed me?â He pets her fondly.
âCoco, get down. He doesn't deserve kisses right now,â Maya sighs, gesturing at the dog, and she begrudgingly obeys, getting down and finding her bed in the corner of the living room. âOkay, say what you gotta say? You have one minute.â
âThat's not a lot.â
âYou're wasting time.â
âStraight up. Alright⊠I came here to apologize, and I blew it cause you're right I'm a loser. I uh⊠I thought that by pushing you away was doing you a favor, but I can see now that's not how it works.â
âNo, it doesn't,â Maya says firmly.
âTruth is that I don't know what Iâm doing⊠I thought that if I came here and gave you some closure, we could just move on. But I'm looking at you right now, and I don't think I'll be able to do that. It'll be pretty hard to forget about you after everythingâŠâ
âStop trying to sabotage yourself. Live a little. Isn't that what you told me that day when you helped me unpack? Why don't you take that advice for yourself?â
âBecause I'm a piece of shit and I don't deserve you.â
âThat's not true.â
âIt is. You said outside⊠For the longest time I've been pretending to be something I'm not, that I'm not sure who I am anymore. I thought you fell for that version of me that isn't real. But you didn't, you saw through all my bullshit, and you fell for me anyway⊠Why?â
âWhy? Because I'm probably out of my mind.â She can't help but scoff a little. âI keep falling for all the wrong guys. But believe it or not, you're not the worst Iâve dealt with, Michael. You're not perfect. Nobody is. You say youâre pretending youâre something youâre not⊠that must be exhausting. I can see it's catching up with you alreadyâŠâ
âIt is exhausting.â
âSo stop doing that.â
âIt's not that simple. I'm not you.â
âThe best things in life are hardly simple, hon. It'll hurt like a motherfucker to undo all the damage, but once you make it to the other side, it'll be worth it. I've been there. Iâm not perfect, either.â
âI think you're pretty perfect to be honest.â
âI've done plenty of shit that says otherwise.â
âYeah, but you admit it. You're not afraid of putting it out there, even if people don't like it. That takes guts.â
âWell, I've realized that you can't please everyone all the time.â
âYou should have been a shrink, you know that?â
âNo, I'm not very patient with people. That's why I work with animals, remember?â
âYou've been with me. It's been over a minute, and you haven't thrown me out yet.â
âCause I'm a sucker. And beyond all reason, I believe everything you've just said.â
âSo, what do we do now?â
âYou're asking me?â
âYeah, you're the one with all the insight.â
âWhatever happens now it's up to you, Michael. Iâve already forgiven you. You say you donât wanna be with me but refuse to leave, and come in here for an encore. What did you expect from me?â
âI guess I keep hoping youâd change your mind about me. Itâd be easier to leave if you hated me.â
âDo you want me to lie to you and say that I despise you?â
âNo, unless you do.â
âWell, prepare to stay here all night, cause as much as I want to, I'd never hate you. So, it's just a matter of, do you wanna stay or go?â
He takes a deep breath and surrenders, âI⊠I think I wanna stay. If thatâs okay.â
âThatâs okay,â she exhales softly, echoing his words.
Neither of them are sure how to go on from there.
Theyâve said so much, and yet there is still so much left unsaid. But the fact that heâs stopped letting that inner turmoil of shame and guilt keep him from her is a big step in the right direction. It grounds him, and gives him some peace of mind knowing that sheâs looked him in the eye, and said â yes, I know everything about you, and I still want you.
Maya accepts who he is with an open heart, mind, and arms. She doesnât seem fazed by it because sheâs the most powerful force heâs ever encountered. Heâs finally willing to give into what was meant to happen all along. He's tired of fighting himself. And if someone like her can find something redeeming about him, maybe he can try to be better for her.
âCan IâŠâ hesitant, he takes a step closer. âCan I kiss you?â
âOnly if you want to.â
âI wanna,â he barely mumbles below the sound of a breath. âI shouldn't have pulled away the other night. I understand if you-â
âShh, just kiss me,â Maya's cuts him out. âDon't overthink it, Berzatto.â
âOkay.â
Drawing a shy smile, his head leans forward, as one of his hands cup her jaw.
âGod, forgive me. You're so beautiful, Maybird,â he utters an inch away from her lips before sealing them shut.
This time, he closes his eyes, quiets the voices in his head, the ones that tell him he doesn't deserve her. In between the cracks of the walls he's put up, something else emerges. The relentless desire that comes with the same force of a waterfall. He lets it take the wheel as he savors the thrill that are her plump lips. Tenderly she kisses him back. Links her hands to his neck, begging him to keep kissing her, to consume her, to take her last breath. And he does. He delves deeper. Sends his tongue to soothe that aching that made a home in his chest. He's never felt his heart beat louder than now. It's like he's been dead for years, and she's bringing him alive kiss after kiss after kiss after kissâŠ
Chapter 6: Life is a bowl of cherries
Like most things in his life, Michael has a tendency to sabotage his relationships right before things start to get serious. He never follows through, a lot of people would agree. Perhaps, it isn't as much of a tendency but a result from his dependency to something else entirely.
The commitment to his work, the pressure to provide for his family has driven him to a very dangerous path. Itâs never been more clear as it is now. His eyes are wide open. Forcefully. And for the first time ever, heâs willing to admit he has a problem that he canât solve on his own.
Itâs way past time to face the music, and heâs scared shitless to put that into words. Once the truth comes out, everyone will know how much of a failure he is.
He and Maya still haven't tackled that issue. She's not oblivious to it. She's the first one who saw that something wasn't right. She called him out on it and felt like a dagger laced in shame poked into his heart. Like most addicts, he never thought anyone would notice, he believed he was going so careful. But Maya Silva is not just anyone. She's insightful as she is sharp. She could spot his bullshit from miles away if she wanted to.
Having someone putting that into words was probably one of the hardest truths he had to hear about himself. He didn't realize it was getting out of hand until she verbalized that. They didn't touch it beyond that. While she's not a stranger to challenges, this is out of her depth. As much as it is for him.
While he got rid of a handful of demons, there are still hundreds that haunt him. They make all his fears come true the day after their kissâŠ
In an attempt to make a better man out of himself for her by breaking the habit, he tries to go just one day without the comfort of reaching to his hidden stash. He manages to go a few hours in the morning without it, but eventually, it becomes harder to go through the day to stay sober. He takes a lower dose, which is an achievement on its own, but it only shows how much he was relying on that.
Michael desperately wants to follow through for once, and makes the executive decision of not using while heâs with her. Heâs aware that trading one addiction for another is not the best way to deal with it, but when they're together, it's easy to forget and ignore all those demons making noise in his head. It's when he's alone that he feels that devious hand trying to pull him into the dark well of desperation that his name carved on the walls.
At this moment, there's another different hand, a cold one, holding his own as they walk between rows of Christmas trees while Maya surveys each of them to choose one to bring home.
Itâs the first week of December. Theyâve easily slipped back to hanging out as much as they used to. And officially, theyâve been out a handful of times since that night he showed up at her door. They've been talking a lot and taking it slow, which feels nice for a change. Sometimes he wishes he could rush through all this part to see what the future holds for them. Thinking about the future in general has always been scary. However, thinking about a future with her gives him just a sliver of hope that things will get better.
Lacing his fingers with hers, he captures the glimpse of a smile as she keeps hauling his ass deeper into the tree farm. They had driven here, an hour out of the city, so she could cut her own tree, cause she read it was better for the environment. Thereâs no more fight left in him to chase away this overwhelming warmth, and new kind of love that envelops him. If sheâd ask him to fly up to Mars, heâd do it.
His other hand is occupied by the end of Coco's leash that walks by his other side. The dog stops as Maya comes to halt to point at the chosen tree.
âThis one.â
âAre you sure?â
âYeah. This one will fit perfectly in the living room without taking too much space.â
âAlright. Letâs haul it out.â
With the help of a saw they carefully cut the trunk at the base and then, aided by one of the farmers, then sleeve it in a net and load it into the truck.
It's a nice drive with his two favorite girls. Coco sits between Maya's feet and props her head on her thigh while she's pampered with lots of caresses and ear scratches. The dog quickly falls asleep like a baby and doesn't open her eyes until the truck has pulled up on the driveway.
They bring Coco inside, unload the tree, and put it on the stand. As Michael busies himself whipping out something for dinner, Maya brings the decorations she bought earlier and starts hanging them on the tree.
It's a pretty damn picture of the two of them, sitting on the couch, sharing food in front of the fire. He wishes he could frame that moment when she glances at him with that vivid glint in her eye that makes his heart melt.
Maya climbs onto his lap after putting the dishes away. Sitting sideways, her head pillows his shoulder, while his arm curls around her waist. One of her hands holds his bearded jaw, having her fingers softly petting his hairs.
âThanks for helping me today,â she utters, enjoying his embrace and the cozy decorated room.
âAnytime, Maybird,â his palm slides over her legging-covered thigh.
Maya lifts her head and presses her curved lips sweetly on his cheek.
âWe should go on a drive sometime again. It was nice.â
âYeah, it was. Maybe for New Year's.â
âIt's a date,â Michael squeezes her knee as her head leans to the side to capture his eyes.
Maya throws one of those disarming smiles that drives completely out of his mind. He holds the back of her head and seizes the temptation of her lips heâs come to know so well in a matter of days. He revels in the way their mouths fit together like two puzzle pieces.
They lose track of time while their tongues swirl slowly to the same cadence, savoring every second of it as if it was the last. Their arms are loosely locked around the other when Maya swifts her position to straddle his thighs instead. Her body dangerously rezones, sitting over his crotch. His adventurous hands travel to her ass, while the lock of their lips remains strong. He canât help but pull her hips flush against his as the kiss heats up.
They've never gone further than second base until this point. Though they agreed not to rush into anything, tonight might be the day. He wants to. And so does she. But there's still that part of him that's holding him back from crossing that line with her. Maya's special. He's known her for so long, he wouldn't forgive himself from ever hurting her.
âI thought we were taking it slow.â At the most inconvenient moment, he breaks the kiss and takes his hands away from her when his body demands more of her.
âWeâre making out⊠slowly.â
âNot anymore.â
âDo you have a problem with that?â A sly grin flashes across her face as one of her eyebrows arch.
âDon't look at me like that, Maybird.â He throws his head back on the edge of the couch.
âLike what? Iâm not doing anything,â she laughs and leans her face closer to his. âIs it that bad to want you? Donât you want me?â
âOf course I want you, sweetheart.â
âThen whatâs the problem?â
âThe problem is that doing this with you feels pretty fucking weird.â
âWhy?â
âBecause I knew you as a kid. You were practically a baby when we met.â
âThatâs the most ridiculous thing youâve ever said, Bear. First, stop thinking about me as a kid. That's creepy. Second, you aren't much older than me, Mister. And third, do I look like a fucking baby to you now? Or⊠Do I look like a babe?â
âA babe. Definitely a babe,â he emphasizes, lifting his head and running his tongue across his lips, letting his eyes roam the beautiful curves of her body hugged in a tight t-shirt and a pair of leggings.
âSo treat me like a babe. Fuck going slow. Kiss me like you mean it, goddammit! Stake your claim. Grab me. Touch me like the world is about to end and the last thing you wanna do is spend your last dying moments with me.â She demands so passionately, it sends a chill through his body.
He swallows, as his eyes become glossy in lust. Michael grabs her chin to keep her face still. Chasing that desire, he ravages her mouth like heâs never done before. Drinking her in, letting his tongue run wild as his hands go down to grip at the curve of her hips. He unabashedly handles her body to press harder on him, over his growing bulge, that makes her moan into his mouth every time it hits the right spot.
Maya is beyond pleased to have him finally give in to that shared crave that only grows bigger by the second. He grows bigger even quicker once heâs jumped over that line.
Without breaking from his eager kiss, Maya stops moving on his lap and sends her hands to undo the fly of his jeans. Beneath the denim fabric, she can tell how his erection strains, begging to be released by the kindness of her hand. He groans a couple of curses into her mouth when she peels back his underwear.
Maya doesnât have to look down to know how big he is. Her palm curves around his swollen cock. It fills up both her fists as she stacks one on top of the other. Thereâs some wetness already that she spreads down to the underside that helps her jerk him off nicely.
Michael loses momentarily his ability to breath and parts from her lips to draw some air. He captures her eyes that hold a darker shade as both of her fists tighten around him. After a moment, he glances at her diligent, handy work that might have him come earlier than heâd want to. Michael hasnât been touched like this in a long time. At least not with someone he had a connection as deep as this.
âDoes it feel good?â Asks Maya with a grin splitting her face, as she shifts on his thighs to straddle just one and rub herself against the toned muscles of his leg.
âSo fucking good,â he says under his breath as his head falls back, clutching his fingers to her moving waist. âI⊠fuck⊠fuck me⊠Are you riding my leg?â
âUh-huh. Do you want me to stop?â
âHell no. ThatâsâŠâ his breathing keeps faltering as she picks up the pace. âYou getting all wet for me?â
âYou have no idea, Bear,â she purrs over his lips.
All his blood flows down to fire consuming his center, letting him dangle from one lousy thread.
âDon't have to hold it. It's okay if you wanna come.â
âIt's just⊠I don't want you to thinkâŠâ
âShh. There's nothing to prove. Just close your eyes, and relax. Let me give this to you.â
Following her guidance, his mind clears completely as he closes his eyes and stops clenching every muscle of his body to let her bring him to ecstasy. His hips buck up a few times. And in just a few more pumps, his cock twitches in her hold before covering her hands in the warm spill of his orgasm.
Mayaâs hips come to a halt. She tenderly kisses his exposed Adam's apple without letting go of his hardness that still throbs for a moment as the orgasm ebbs. Then she wipes her hands on her leggings while his mouth finds hers. He presses a couple of soft kisses at the corner of her mouth as his breathing recovers.
Michael cradles the back of her head and pulls it down to his shoulder. He plays with her hair, while she listens to his heartbeat as it evens.
âIâm gonna make it up to you,â he says under a breath.
âYou donât gotta.â
âI wanna. Just need a sec.â
âOkay.â She smiles to herself, hugging his chest as he descends from his high.
Once his strength returns, heâs seizing her lips again at a gentle pace. His tongue swims in that endless well of affection she offers freely.
When he's ready, he picks Maya up and carries her to the bedroom to finish what she's started. Clothes are quickly discarded in the dim lit room they both painted together. When he frees her from her leggings and underwear, she's still wet.
He's dumbstruck by the beauty of all her, all bare just for him, laying as the most precious offering.
Smiling bashfully, he props one elbow on the bed, and lies by her side. His fingers gently slide across the surface of her inner thigh. Her skin forms goosebumps beneath his palm as they ascend closer to her groin.
Aiming for that sweet spot between her legs, he locks eyes with her and watches her expression as they land on her folds. Drawing a breath, her chest swells as he tenderly craws circles around her clit. The arousal wrapping around his fingers and the sighted moans he coaxes out of her mouth makes his cock harden again.
âA little harder,â she demands between pants, placing her hand on top of his to show him exactly how hard he can go.
âLike that?â
Maya nods and then holds his bearded jaw with both hands, pulling his face closer to capture his mouth, while his fingers move quicker. She jolts at the sensation of two of them suddenly slipping into her opening. He keeps his thumb steady massaging her clit at the same time. The delicious mixture of movement makes her core thread in a tight knot of pleasure that begs to be untied.
âMichael, baby⊠I'm almostâŠâ His name has never sounded as good as the way she cries to it the closer she gets to the edge.
âI know, sweetheart. Come for me, beautiful.â
His fingers slip in and out gradually faster until her body is left shuddering by the final impact of that sweet orgasm. The soft fabric of her skin buzzes beneath his palm as she rides that wave of pleasure that takes her to a higher plane. All her muscles seize up for a split second, and then her body becomes jelly.
Inhaling a long breath, Maya turns to the side and curls against him, hugging his torso.
They stay in comfortable silence for a long moment, enjoying the calmness of being wrapped around the other.
Maya kisses his neck softly while his fingers run up and down her spine.
âDid I tell you how beautiful you are like this?â He whispers.
âYeah, I think you did,â her head tilts up to look at him.
One of his fingers draws her jaw, âI mean, youâve always been stunning, but Iâve never seen you glow like this. It's like staring into the sun.â
âYou're so fucking corny.â She smiles shyly before pressing a chaste kiss to his lips. âYou look different, too. More relaxed.â
âThe power of orgasm.â
âThat must be it. When was the last time you had sex?â She blurts out, and regrets immediately after seeing his eyes slightly widen. âSorry, I didnât mean to pry.â
âSweetheart, you can ask me anything now. I mean, weâre both fucking naked. It canât get more intimate than this.â
âThatâs true.â
âTo answer your question⊠the last time I had sex was a few months ago. It wasnât anything serious. There was this girl in my building, we used to hang out sometimes. And then⊠then there was you, and I couldnâtâŠâ he doesnât have to finish for her to grasp the concept that he couldnât be with anyone else but her.
âWell⊠If youâre up for it, we could go all the way.â
âI suppose we could. Weâve come this far⊠Why stop now, right? Itâs the end of the world, after all.â
âRight,â she laughs, pressing her lips to his shoulder.
Feeling more energized, she guides him to lay on his back, stretches his arms above his head while she mounts his hips. Leaning over, she nibbles his bottom lip as her ass rotates over his dick, getting it to become hard-rock again with such little friction.
âAre you clean, you know, STI wise?â she mumbles over his mouth.
âThat is the sexiest thing anyone has ever asked me.â
âSo, are you?â
âI am. You?â
âClean and safe, if youâre wondering. Thatâs sexy to me.â
âBet it is,â he chuckles, grabbing her ass and pressing her harder against his building erection.
She moves like an enchantress, cursing every inch of his body with her charms to use for her pleasure. He welcomes it. Heâs never felt this excited in years, and thatâs all she is. Her impulsivity, her passion, her vitality⊠It's the perfect cocktail. She adds all of her to it, doesnât leave behind an ounce of anything. Itâs all or nothing. Thatâs why he easily falls in love with her more every day. He wants to drink her all in, absorb every drop until she becomes part of him.
When she sinks onto his cock for the first time, heâs mesmerized by the way she looks at him with nothing but radiant warmth and lust. Her hands brace his chest, as she slowly takes him all the way down. It feels like his world spins on its axis as she experiments with her hips. First, waving gently, then when sheâs used to being filled with him, she starts bouncing on top of him.
Nothing ever felt more right than having her like this. Her skin melts beneath his palms, and all he wants to do is explore every corner of her body. She throws her head back and moans at the air as her hips go back to rocking back and forth when they get tired.
Michael slings an arm around her waist, pulls her down against his chest, and gingerly swifts her body around to be on top. His thrusts suddenly come sharp and measured, hitting all the right spots within her tender walls, earning a few good cries mixed with his name. He holds one of her breasts in his palm, as he madly makes love to her. He feels her nails scratching roughly along his back as they both swim closer to the edge. Thereâs a force taking over his hips that pushes him to his limit as if it was a matter of life or death. It is. At this moment, nothing matters more than chasing that ultimate reward. He makes it his life mission. It consumes everything in the room, makes his whole body tremble in ecstasy as he ascends with her closer to that pinnacle.
He doesnât stop until sheâs left breathless with her body shaking underneath him. And this time, he can hold on for just one more second till she comes apart to let go and have all his seed spilled inside her.
This becomes their most memorable night to date. That room becomes their safe haven to explore and love each other in ways they havenât done before. They disappear into a daze of sleeping, fucking, and repeat. It becomes primordial and sacred. He finds new ways to worship her body. She finds new ways to reach into his soul, carve herself deeper.
Chapter 7: That's the way the cookie crumbles
Michael is sitting on the couch, absentmindedly surfing between channels on Maya's TV when Coco sprints down the staircase, anxiously whining after hearing a string of loud popping sounds outside. The dog hops onto his lap with her tail between her legs. She lowers her head, tucking it beneath his arm, trying to make herself as small as possible. He glances out the window to see a few kids playing with novelty fireworks across the street.
âAre you scared of fireworks, Coco girl?â He pets her head softly. âShh, It's okay, baby.â
Maya's out tonight with some of her coworkers she's made friends with, and he's decided to stay with Coco. She doesn't need babysitting, but he likes staying here. To be honest, he's been sleeping at Maya's most nights since they started having sex.
He soothes the dog with lots of cuddles and a couple of treats until the kids go back home and the big scaredy-cat pit bull finally stops trembling.
They both doze off for a while, and he's awakened by the ringtone of his phone when Maya calls him to ask to be picked up. She said she had a few drinks and didn't want to drive. So, he takes Coco with him and drives to a bar that is only a few blocks away from his own apartment.
Maya is more wasted than she sounded on the phone. Her friends are only halfway there. He makes sure that all her friends have someone to give them a ride before taking Maya home. Instead of driving back to Oak Park, he decides to take her to his apartment.
It concerns him to see her in this state. She barely mumbles a word, but he can clearly see that there's something going on that she can't bring herself to say. Michael shouldn't judge. God knows how many times he's drowned his sorrows in a bottle, but this doesn't seem like her at all. She was so excited earlier to go out and now there's nothing but sadness plastered all over her face.
Upon their arrival, she vomits everything she had drank earlier and some more. Michael holds her hair and soothes her back while she leans over the toilet until there's nothing more left in her. He dutifully takes care of Maya and brings her some juice to settle her stomach after getting her to lay down on his bed.
In the morning, he quietly slips out of bed, takes Coco out on a walk and feeds her before Maya even wakes up. By the time they return, Maya is already up. She's taken a shower, and now she's just sitting on the couch, wearing one of his shirts, sulking and eating some crackers she found in the kitchen cabinets.
âMorning, sweetheart.â He kisses the top of her head while Coco goes around the couch, wagging her tail, demanding some attention.
âHey,â Maya greets back, glancing at him while holding the dog's face and kissing her nose. âWas she good last night?â
âYeah, she's the best.â Michael sits down on the coffee table and pats the dog's spine as she lays down on the floor. âDid you know she's scared of fireworks?â
âYeah, she's not a fan.â
Maya tucks a knee to her chest, catching Michael's vexed look that creases his brow as he props his elbows on his knees and tensely links his fingers together.
âWhat?â She asks dryly.
âI didn't say anything.â
âThere's clearly something in your mind. I can tell.â
âOf course you do.â
âC'mon. Out with it, Berzatto. What is it?â
âNothing. I just⊠I'm worried about you. You didn't seem like yourself last night.â
âBear, you donât have to worry about me. I just took a few more shots than I should have.â She shrugs it off with little importance. âBut I'm fine⊠Well, you know, besides the killing headache and the hangover. I shouldnât have drank that much.â
âThen, why did you?â
âI don't know⊠Why does anyone drink at all?â She annoyingly deflects.
âYou seemed okay when you called. But when I picked you up⊠You could barely stand.â
âLook, I'm sorry that I called you. I'll think twice next time.â
âIt's not that, sweetheart. I loved that you called⊠I'm just trying to understand what happened.â
âPeople drink. Big deal. I went out with some friends and had fun. That's it. Why are you grilling me about this? It's a little hypocritical coming from you, don't you think?â
âI'm not grilling you. I'm trying to figure out what happened. Itâs obvious you're trying to hide something.â
âYeah? Tell that to your stash drawer. You wanna lecture me about drinking? Start explaining why you need that many pills.â
âYou went through my drawers?â
âI was looking for a shirt.â
âYou know what? It doesn't matter, cause we're not talking about me right now.â
âHow convenient. You're the one that has a real problem. I was upset last night and I got wasted. The end. I'm not going to drink tonight or tomorrow or the day after that, and probably it won't happen again, cause I know my limits. Do you know yours?â She jabs sharply, meaner than he's ever heard her.
Michael hangs his head down, shame washing all over him, stares at the floor for a long moment before answering.
âI wasn't trying to start a fight or lecture you. I just wanted to know if there was something bothering youâ I guess it was just a matter of time before you found⊠You're right⊠I'm⊠I have a problem. But I don't use when I'm with you⊠IâŠâ
Maya stands up and faces the window. Looking outside, she comes to realize how tactless that was on her part. Tears slip out of the corner of her eye. She never wanted to confront Michael like this. Let alone let her own insecurities get the best of her.
âI'm sorry. I didnât meanâŠâ She wipes her tears, and picks up the phone from the table.
She unlocks it and presses play and speaker for him to listen to a voice message she received yesterday. In it, the voice of her sister suggests that Maya should consider not attending Christmas dinner to avoid upsetting their mother like the year before. The message goes on about their-sister-in-law being pregnant, about to give birth around the holidays, and that she doesnât need that added stress to that night, since theyâre the ones hosting this year somewhere in bumfuck, Utah. She babbles for a while about how Maya has made her situation even worse for herself when she decided to move back to Chicago and hide it for months; along with a string of excuses that she's heard many times before.
They've always been subtle with their dismissal, saying it was fine if she had other plans. But that call is the first time they've openly asked her to refrain from attending a family function.
âI got it during dinner and I just⊠I donât know, itâs like a switch flipped in my head, and I started throwing back shots to forget⊠I wasnât trying to hide it. I just didnât want to talk about it or think about it right now.â She explains, placing the phone, and then paces the length of the living room a couple of times.
âI get it,â Michael sighs and stands up, running his palm over his beard, putting a stop to her feet.
âIâm sorry that I went through your stuff and that I used that against you⊠I shouldnât have. That was a low blow.â
âGuess we're both kinda messed up. I wasn't trying to hide it, either. You already know that I'm fucked up. It's just⊠We've been in this bubble and I wanted to enjoy that for a little longer before having to deal with all that, y'know?â
âI know,â her hand gently cups his bearded jaw. âWhen you're ready to talk about it⊠I'm here. I'm not going anywhere. Bubble or not. I⊠I've never been happier with anyone, Michael. It might be incredibly naive and idealistic of me to say this, but I feel like if we're honest with each other, there's nothing we can't face.â
âI feel that too, Maybird.â
Michael holds that same hand that's placed over his beard and prints a soft kiss on her palm, tickling her skin.
Then, he releases it and perches his hands on her waist as Maya links her arms around his neck.
âWhat are you going to do with the whole don't come home for Christmas thing?â
âI don't know. Part of me just wanna show up and ruin their night. But I know if I stay, they'll see that they're just as miserable with or without me. They just need someone to blame for their misfortunes, and Iâm it.â
âHey, maybe you could come have dinner with us like you used to.â
âChristmas at the Berzattos? I'm not sure which one is worse.â
âC'mon, they both suck. It's our first Holiday since we started this, it'd be nice to spend it together, don't you think?â
âI guess⊠I could think about it.â
Mitch finds you in the park you used to play in as a child. Youâre sitting on the swing in a navy blue quilted jacket that used to belong to him, your hands holding onto the chains as it rocks to and fro in the breeze.
Itâs the place you come to when your worldâs in turmoil, somewhere with happy memories where nothing can harm you. You donât say anything when he sits down on the swing alongside of you, you simply stare straight ahead at the duck pond as the drizzle soaks your hair.
âYour mom called.â He says breaking the silence. âShe told me what happened today.â
Your jaw clenches as you inhale sharply and he realises in that moment that youâre trying not to cry.
âIt was a rural hospital.â You say finally, using the back of your hand to wipe the teats from under your eyes. âThey werenât equipped for the kind of complications I was having.â
If youâd been in Chicago when you miscarried, the procedure probably would have been completed with minimal scarring. Instead youâd had a junior doctor who was undertaking his first D&C alone and fucked things up so badly that youâve just discovered that you couldnât have children, no matter how much you may want them.
âIâm sorry.â He says softly. âI know it feels like youâre alone right now but youâre notâŠâ
You laugh then and the sound it cuts through him like a scalpel because itâs just so fucking bitter.
âI donât have a husband Mitch. I donât have a baby. I canât even have a family anymore which is the reason we split up in the first place.â You remind him, your eyes filled with anguish as you tilt your head to look at him. âThereâs just me right now, screaming into the fucking void because God has found every single way he can to fuck me.â
Mitch raises from his swing and crouches down in front of you. His hands encompass your chilled features, his thumbs chasing away the frustrated tears that leak down your cheeks.
âMarley, you have me.â He tells you fiercely. âYou have me right here fighting in your corner, and I will always be here whether weâre together or not. None of this changes how I feel about you, none of this stops me from loving you as much as I do.â
âThatâs easy for you to say now that children have been taken off the table.â You tell him. âIâm the perfect woman for you now arenât I? The wife that canât bear children. Itâs exactly what you what you wanted.â
âNo Marley, itâs not.â He promises you, his voice so fucking earnest it wounds you. âI want to start a family with you, I was just too scared of fucking of it up. I was letting my past mess with my head and Iâm working through that but you have to know that I never wanted this, I never wanted any of this to happen to you.â
Itâs raining harder now, the droplets soaking the two of you as Mitchâs forehead against yours.
âTake me home Mitch.â You whisper against his lips. âI donât want to be alone tonight.â
Kelly Severide- 2 Years Ago
2 years ago YN did something she never thought she'd do. A one night stand. YN had gone through a nasty divorce and went to Vegas. That's where she meet a very handsome man. At the time she had the name Kelly, that was it but it didn't matter because it's not like she was going to ever see him again, right? Wrong. 4 weeks later YN finds out she's pregnant. She knew she needed to find Kelly, but how? Does he even want to be involved? After months of looking YN's baby bump grew and grew and so she needed to start to focus on herself and her baby.
2 years on and YN saw him on TV, she would never forget that handsome face. She heard that he was part of firehouse 51 in Chicago.
So that is where she is right now. Stood outside the firehouse with her 1 year old boy balanced on her hip. Nervous she takes in a deep breath and walks into the fire house
"Can I help you?" a man named Matt Casey asks
"Erm yeah. Hi I'm YN I'm looking for Kelly"
"Come with me" YN follows the man further into the firehouse "Severide. You've got a visitor" that's when YN spots Kelly sat at a table playing cards. He looks up and immediately his eyes shift from YN to the baby on her hip
"Hi" is all YN can say.
To have a bit of privacy Kelly takes YN to his office, closing the door behind him. Kelly leans on his desk as YN stands in front of him
"Is he...."
"Yours? Yeah. I wanted you to have the choice to be part of his life, but I didn't know where to find you"
"How did you find me?"
"You were on TV. I recognised you so I got a flight here" there's a pause while Kelly rubs his face with his hands, obviously feeling a little stressed and confused. Once again he looks at the baby
"What's his name?"
"Jacob" again there's a small pause
"And he's definitely mine?"
"Yes. Your the only person I slept with around that time. I know this is a lot to take in so I'll give you some time to think about it, about whether you want to be in his life. Here.." YN reaches in her pocket for a piece of paper with her number on "call me or text me with your answer. I'm staying in Chicago for the week" Kelly takes her number then shows YN the way out of the fire house.
Walking back into the firehouse Kelly flops down at the lunch table with a sigh
"So who was that?" Capp asks
"A one night stand 2 years ago" Kelly replies looking at the number YN gave him
"And the kid?" Gabby asks
"Mine. She's giving me a choice to be part of his life. I just don't know how we're going to make this work. She doesn't live in Chicago and I don't want to move so how do I be a dad?"
"Look. You've wanted to be a dad for so long now. You and Shay never got the chance to. Maybe this is your opportunity. I say take it" Casey tells his friend
"If your both serious about this you'll figure something out" Sylvie says
"How did she even find you?" Herrmann asks and Kelly proceeds to tell him about the TV show.
Over the day, Kelly has YN and Jacob on his mind. Thinking about what to do, what was the right thing to do? In the end he settles on messaging YN, telling her he wants to be part of Jacobs life, but he isn't sure how it's going to work.
For YN she was always prepared to move to wherever Kelly was. Her life back at home wasn't worth her staying, having no friends or family, it was just her and Jacob. When she receives a message off Kelly her heart almost skips a beat, he wants to be Jacobs dad. Immediately YN calls him asking for them to meet up somewhere, which Kelly suggests Mollys. YN gets herself and Jacob ready and grabs a taxi to said bar where she sees Kelly nursing a beer in his hand. When he notices YN he stands up awkwardly going to give her a hug
"Erm thank you for meeting" YN says sitting down with Jacob on her lap
"So how is this going to work?"
"I'm happy to move here"
"Seriously?"
"Yeah. I don't have anything back home waiting for me. My friends were my ex's friends and since I got pregnant he has been my life. I hate my job so if it means you can be a father to Jacob, I'll move"
"Before we met that night I was going through some shi... stuff. My best friend died, we were trying to have a baby together. That's why I was in Vegas"
"I'm sorry that happened, but now you have got a chance to be a father"
"I can't believe I'm actually a dad" he says looking at the baby
"You want to hold him?"
"Can I?" YN gives Kelly a smile before passing Jacob over to him "thank you, thank you for giving me this opportunity"
"Guess I best start looking for an apartment"
This was a theory I found on reddit and I made a post about it here. Let @turbulenthandholding and I entertain this theory for fun! We were bouncing off ideas, and there's meta turbulent written about disassociation and memory loss.
Carmy & PTSD.
You may also be unable to recall crucial information or forget essential milestones in your life or significant relationships. link
So here it goes: Carmy met Sydney the day he made the hamachi with blood orange, just a few days after Mikey died. He's wearing that glove because the wound is still fresh. So, he continues working and avoids seeing Mikey's body in Chicago.
But talking with Sydney, she's the first person he shares with about his brother's death (she doesn't know how he died because she asks questions about Michael in 1x02 Hands). They had a connection that night and slept together in her hotel room.
Afterward, he has a panic attack, and Sydney calms him down. This is actually the first time it has happened where she calms him. She tells him he should go to Chicago to say goodbye to his brother. That night, when she falls asleep, he goes back to Chicago.
A body in the morgue can be there for up to 30 days- this is where this fragmented memory comes up:
Carmy actually visited to see the body.
Then walks out and goes into a busy street. It's the meaning of the dream.
In his dream, you see two headlightsâthere are no cars on State Street bridge, and there are no street lights over the bridge in RL.
Also, when he wakes up, cars are honking?!
This is a different memory mixed with a dream.
Plot twist: Emmnuel almost runs him over. It's a serendipitous moment where, if Sydney isn't there, her dad is there driving by this road by chance. which is why we get this ominous dream in the pilot. Sydney never tells Emmanuel of her admiration for Carmy; he wouldn't know who Carmy is. We get foreshadows of the cars with Emmanuel: 1) when he tells the story of her mom and their first date, and 2) when he tells Sydney the radiator to the car keeps clicking.
Also Jimmy's dream.
When Emmanuel gets out of the car, he asks Carmy if he's okay, but Carmy keeps walking. Later, when Sydney gets back home, Emmanuel tells herâlike he always talks about his car troubleâthat there was this man he almost hit with his car.
These lyrics played in the 1st episode:
Via Chicago by Wilco
This is a foreshadowing that this memory will come up when he sees Emmanuel.
When she reveals her tattoo- we see carmy making the ragu and these lyrics play:
But wait- why didn't Sydney say anything at the interview- she caught on quickly. He didn't remember her- it was a one-night stand in her head. Why would he? He's this famous chef- who probably has a really active sex life, she assumes.
She also probably called and spoke with Gary, or Ebra, answered, and told her when to come in.
So when she makes up, she and her dad would come every Sunday; Carmy does a double take- probably remembers her saying that word Sunday-becuase they hate Sundays and talked about it- so it almost triggers a memory.
He's quite forgetfulâhe doesn't remember and just accepts she called that morning because he knows he has a foggy memory even forgot what UPS is.
Carmy would draw Claire in high school. Why doesn't he remember that Claire sat behind him in algebra class? PTSD and fragmented memories can be intrusive.
Carmy still forgets things, but the memories are starting to come back. This is why Carmy remembers nights with Claire in season 3- season 4 may play out that way. Sydney spent time with Carmy doing a menu review at his place. A calendar shows in 2x05, with Claire visiting the restaurant and reviewing the menu together on other days.
This is where the scrunchie comes in.
That's all for now!
@turbulenthandholding I hope this is right- let me know if I need to include anything!
Being in a relationship with Eddie Roundtree | Headcannons
A/N: Blurring the lines between the book and show rn, forgive me
Daisy Jones and The Six Masterlist
- You and Eddie met while the band was on break between their first tour and the recording of Look at Us Now (Honeycomb)
- He was instantly smitten with you
- You were one of the first girls who looked past Billy and had a soft spot for him instead
- He finally got over Camila after meeting you, something he didn't think would ever happen
- Your relationship was still pretty new when he went on the Seven-Eight-Nine tour, so you only went to local shows, namely the ones in LA and San Francisco.
- He called you one night from his hotel room, fuming because Billy had taken his guitar out of his hands and played with Daisy. You talked him through it and eventually got him to calm down. He told you he loved you before he hung up.
- When the band started recording Aurora, you were in the sound booth every day supporting Eddie in any way you could. Chances were, Billy did something to piss him off in some way. Everyone relied on you to deescalate the situation. You'd talk to him about it and tell him not to let anyone disrespect him but that Billy was the front man at the end of the day.
- He opened up to you about going to bass and how it really affected what he thought of the band. Don't get him wrong, he loved the band, he just felt like he was out of place there.
- When the Aurora World Tour started, you came to their first few shows, standing backstage as they performed. You were out of sight of the audience, but in Eddie's line of view. Every once in a while, he'd look over at you and smile while he played. The audience took note of this and the fans who were sitting on the far right side saw you standing there. It was in the tabloids that Eddie Roundtree had a serious girlfriend the next day, something the two of you had tried to keep under wraps for a while.
- You actually received a bit of aggression from fans who claimed they were in love with Eddie. One time, when he took you out to a date on one of his off days, things got intense with a fan who was following you back to the hotel the two of you were at. The cops were called and they took care of it, but the two of you decided you would head back to LA early for your safety.
- Camila picked you up from the airport and you couldn't help but fall apart in the passengers seat of her car. She comforted you through the strains being in a band and having adoring fans put on relationships, sharing struggles she had with Billy. It was then that you and Camila became as thick as thieves, as you were the only partners of anyone in the bandâyou didn't know about Karen and Graham yet and Daisy and Nicky were still waiting to come.
- You did, however, rejoin them on the road when they got back to the U.S. after a little over a month of being gone.
- Unbeknownst to you, Eddie had bought a ring at a boutique in Paris. It was at the bottom of his suitcase, tucked between his jeans.
- You were there when everything went down in Chicago. You sat in the audience this time and as soon as the show was over, you went backstage, sensing the tension between everyone. The security guard stopped you at first, but you told him you were with Eddie, but he held you back by the arms.
- Eddie saw what was happening and yelled at the security guard to "let go of his wife", not realizing what he was saying until he said it. When he let go of you, you ran to Eddie, hugging him and asking if he was okay.
- He tells you he doesn't know how much longer the band is going to last.
- That night, in his hotel room, he proposes to you. You say yes, pulling him into a kiss.
- When Eddie finds out the band broke up, he's devastated. He loved music, although the band, in his words, "had gone to shit" by the end of the tour. He revealed he'd miss the thrill of being on stage.
- You ask him what he's going to do now, and he just tells you he has to think about it. He wants to be working before the two of you get married so he can provide for you.
- When he becomes a record producer, the light in his eyes comes bac. The two of you get married a few months later. Because you loved Camila, she and Billy come with their three daughters, who are all flower girls in the wedding. At the end, trying to mend old wounds, Billy congratulates the two of you and wishes you the best. Graham also comes, bringing his girlfriend along. Warren shows up, albiet a little high, to support Eddie. Daisy doesn't want to cause any problems with Billy and Camila, so she stays away. Karen doesn't come either, already working on her own music.
- The two of you move into your own house in LA. This is the same home you bring your son into, and later your daughter.
- You and Eddie live out with music on your mind and love in your hearts, reminiscing about the good old days.
princesses last berzatto dinner~ prt 1
Carmen berzatto x black female reader
Word count: 5k
summary : Y/n, also known as Princess, returns home to Chicago for a final Christmas dinner with the Berzattos before permanently moving to Los Angeles. Saying goodbye to the family she invited herself into when she was only six.This Dinner may be the last opportunity for y/n and Carmen to makeup before they go their separate ways forever. Will they make the most of this chance.(the way that she was supposed to be short ïżŒ and sweet, I literally ended up writing 8,000 wordsïżŒâŠ. Anyway this will probably be a three-part series)
warnings: cursing, drug use (weed), drinking, smoking(cigarettes), smut⊠and probably a bunch other stuff
You knock on the front door with your right hand trying to balance the metal pan of banana pudding you brought in your left. You can see your breath in the air as you breathe due to how cold it is outside. There are no responses from when you knocked the first time so you knock again slightly harder. Still no answer, You start getting irritated with the cold air nipping at your bare legs and the pan that keeps trying to lean right. Just when you think of leaving, Richie opens the door with a confused look on his face.
âPlease Donât make that stupid face, Donna asked me to come so Iâm here,â you say walking passed him into the living room, âI didnât even say anythingâ you hear Richie mumble before closing the door.
As soon as you walk inside you're greeted by the loud familiar sounds of the Berzatto home. Christmas music played in the background as everyone talked loudly amongst themselves. You go to take off your coat and put it on the coat rack by the entrance. Natalie stops you Putting her arm over your shoulder And directing you through the hallway.
âFinally someone sane,â she says turning to you âJesus you look greatâ she sighs looking up at you âI look a mess, I havenât slept properly in days. Iâm stressed out of my mind, Momâs at like six right now and I canât- is this the pudding?â Natalie asks interrupting herself, gesturing to the the metal pan in your hand. âMmhâ you hum with a sight smile âAwww you made the small pan this time,â she says with a little pout âYeah, I decided last minute to come so I didnât have time toâŠ.â you say realizing youâve said too much. Sugarâs face drops slightly, âItâs just-â you say trying to defend yourself but Natalie interrupts
âyou donât have to explain yourself, trust me I understand... Iâm just glad you came, but I had hoped you and Carm worked things out by nowâ Sugar says with a sad smile
âI did too, but I think itâs permanent this time,â you say trying your best to sound unbothered. âWell, you still have me,â Sugar says giving you a tight side hug. âThat I do,â you say giving her a quick kiss on the cheek. âDonât stress, Iâll handle Donnaâ you say giving her a reassuring look. âThatâs probably for the best, I think youâre probably the one who canâ.
You nod walking towards the kitchen. When you walk in you see Donnaâs back facing you, she's moving back and forth from the cutting board, pot, and oven. You walk up slowly behind her rubbing her back to notify her youâre here. She jumps a little grabbing her chest.
âY/n you scared the shit out of me,â Donna says with a big smile, she wraps her arms around you. hovering her butter-covered hands so she doesn't get any on your jacket. âOh you look so beautiful,â Donna says gesturing like she wants to hold your face âHas Carmy seen you?â she says quickly turning around to turn something off on the stove. âNo, not yetâ you reply looking around the room for somewhere to put your coat hoping she would drop the topic. âThatâs OK Iâll call him for you,â Donna says fixing her mouth to yell. âNo, no itâs ok Donna-â
âCARMEN GET IN HERE NOW, Y/N HERE!â Donna yells angrily at the top of her lungs. âYou didnât have to do that Donna I was gonna talk to him eventually,â You say letting out an annoyed sigh âSoâŠI just sped it up, Whatâs the problem?â she says returning to her pot. âNothing never mind,â you say dropping it. You hear heavy loud footsteps running into the kitchen and turn your head to see what it is.
âWhat, What is it? whatâs the matter!â Carmy says irritated and frantic from the entrance of the kitchen. âGood you're here, look how fucking beautiful she is Carmy, itâs she fucking beautiful,â Donna says gesturing to you. You give Carmen a little wave and he nods dismissively making you instantly regret it. The feeling of Aggravation washes over you and you get the urge to be an asshole. âCarmen tell her she looks fucking beautiful!â Donna says getting irritated.
âNo Ms.D itâs okay If Carmen wants to be disrespectful let him be disrespectful,â you say with a dramatic shrug trying to keep the smile off your face. âCarmenâ Donna says staring him down. âMa look sheâs fucking with you, look sheâs smiling,â Carmen says. trying to plead his case âCARMEN!â Donna yells making you jump slightly. Thereâs a silence that settles in the room before he talks âYou lookâŠgood, y/nâ Carmy says reluctantly. âAww thanks, babe,â you say sarcastically giving him a tight-lipped smile. Carmen gives you a nasty look before leaving the kitchen and you get the urge to flip him off even after he already left.
âI guess the Los Angeles is treating you well,â Donna says while stirring something. âHuh?â You asked confused âYour coat, it looks expensive,â she says taking the spoon out of the pot and banging it on the edge to get off the extra sauce. âIt wasnât, I got it from a friendâ
you reply shorty trying to quickly change the topic âAnyway how have you beenâ you ask with a small smile. Donna goes completely silent for a second and you worry you said something wrong,â I need you to redo my roots tomorrow are you spending the night?â Donna asks ignoring your question completely taking her finger and tasting the sauce off the spoon. âNo I got a hotel- have you asked Natalie to do it?â You ask leaning against the counter. âSo she can get dye everywhere, no- whatâs that?â Donna questions mid-sentence, pointing at your pan making your heart drop.
âBanna pudding?â you say hoping you weren't about to be the cause of a breakdown. Donna lets out a relieved sigh at your words. âFor a second I thought you made fishâ. Donna says with a laugh that makes you uncomfortable turning around and resuming her cooking. âMs. D you know, I know betterâ you chuckle trying to find a place to put your pan on the crowded counter, you hesitantly put the tin pan close to the edge because it's the only spot available. You also take off your coat placing it on an empty chair by the entrance of the dining room. âI'm so glad you came, I was just telling Michael ây/n comingâ, he didn't believe me but I told him you were on-â a loud ringing of food timer interrupted her. She quickly turns it off with sauce-covered fingers before yanking open the oven.
âFuckâ Donna says loudly grabbing her oven mitts and throwing the hot pan onto the counter. âY/n hand me the knife over there,â Donna says not turning around. You quickly get the knife and hand it to her upside down when you feel arms wrap around you from behind. âTHE PRINCESS IS HERE!â Michael announces picking you up off the ground and spinning you. âGET OFFâ you yell trying to get out of his grasp. âDon't do that shit in here,â Donna says shooing the two of you towards the kitchen entrance. Michael puts you back on the ground and you readjust your dress that rode up slightly.
Fak walks in with a dramatic surprised expression plastered on his face âPrincess?â Fak says with a big smile walking up and hugging you, You try to protest but he squeezes you tighter swaying side to side. âOk ok, that's enough,â you say finally breaking free âWhy is everyone so huggy suddenlyâ you say adjusting your dress again.
âBecause We havenât seen you in forever,â Fak says with a smile that makes you suddenly feel a little bad for not telling any of them this was your last Christmas dinner together or probably any dinner here because you were moving to LA for good. âItâs been a couple of months,â You say walking back into the kitchen to get a glass of wine. âIt's been like nine, princess,â Michael says following behind you with Fak. You open the cabinet where Donna keeps the glasses before your brain tells you to ask. âCan I use a glass?â you turn around to ask hand already on the stem of it. âOf course y/n...â she says before taking a pause, putting her knife down on the cutting board
âYou know what I think princess, I think youâve been away from home too long...youâre starting to act shy like you don't know usâŠ.Getting hotels. You're Just like Carmen, you two pop in and out as you pleaseâ Donna says resumeing her chopping faster than before. You let out a sigh wiping your face in frustration at the topic âI have missed you at the beefâ Fak chimes in nodding his head annoyingly while chewing on something. âfak why are talking right now?â you say quickly giving him a shut the fuck up look, and he does. âfuck Princess I hate to agree with him but heâs right, whenâs the last you came and got your sandwich?â Michael asks lifting an eyebrow.
âMy job is in Los Angeles so Iâm usually in Los Angeles I don't see what the problem is here,â you say looking in the drawers for a wine bottle opener. âIt's in that one,â Donna says, pointing to the drawer, close to her. You retrieve the wine opener and she continues. âI'm just saying y/n it would be nice if you visited more often,â Donna says shrugging her shoulders, throwing onions in the pot. You sigh internally not wanting her to start the same lecture youâve heard a million times before. You don't say anything so Michael starts up again
âPrincess you know, I really didn't think weâd see you again. I didn't, Mom told me you were coming, I said no fucking way. After last year you didn't show up I thought we had lost you and that fucking pudding foreverâ
Michael says laughing while leaning against the counter where you put your pan. âActually whereâs that shit, I need to continue the tradition,â Michael says turning his head and his body slightly side to side looking for it, in the process pressing his back against the pan pushing it closer towards the edge. âcan you stop? STOP STOP!â you scream running behind Michael grabbing your pan before it fell âPay the fuck attention you were about to drop it all over the damn floor!â you say angrily holding the pan far away from him. âAnd you Must be diluted if you think Iâm gonna let you put your dirty ass finger in my pudding again, it's not happening,â you say discretely looking around for a place to hide
It.
âOoo not so shy anymore,â Michael says in a taunting, older brother tone âI can't fucking think with you two yelling in my ear!â Donna declares her jittery hands, repeatedly, pressing the side of her ear. âMy bad Ms.D,â you say lowering your tone. âSee what the fuck you did now I'm getting yelled at,â you say going back to finishing pouring your wine. âI'm not yelling,â Donna says still chopping away âI'm sorry Ms. D I didn't mean like that I just meant, like getting in trouble,â you say looking at her for approval. âMmhâ she hums not looking up from the cutting more. You Hear Richie laugh followed by some corny dramatic claps. âwhat the fucks so funny?â you ask already annoyed by his presence. âI donât know maybe watching, you cower, âsorry Ms. D, My bad Ms.Dâ Richie says laughing.
You stare at him, blank-faced for a minute before talking, âDid you think that was funny? Fak did you think it was funny fak?â you ask giving a knowing look. âNo not reallyâ Fak mumbles âRight, because it wasn't,â you say annoyed taking a big swig of your wine. âI thought it was funny,â Michael says
âof course, you thought that was funny Michael everythingâs a fucking joke to you,â you say aggressively taking another sip of your wine. âWow...reallyâ you hear Riche says trying to egg Michael on. âLow blowâ you hear fak humble you internally you cursed yourself for saying it but it was too late. âWhatâs that supposed mean y/nâŠâ Michale says his tone serious âDo we have to do this?â you mumble downing the rest of your wine. âWHAT THE FUCK IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN!â Michael yells. âNothing, nothing, I didnât mean anything by it,â you say trying to calm down the situation and not laugh, something about Michael being mad was always really funny to you. You think it's because you knew he was never serious Michael could never stay mad at you. You bring your hand to your mouth trying to hold in your laughter and the wine but it only makes Michael angrier.
âWhatâs so fucking funny?âMichael says a small smile pulling at his lips as a result of yours but you can tell heâs still really upset. âNothing,â you say shruging your shoulders trying to act nonchalant.
You glance over Donna and see her staring down at the pot in a daze tapping her finder on the edge of the counter. Before you could warn Michael to just leave it You see his eyes flicker down to the tin pan in your hand and it's like you see the idea pop into his head. âNO!-â you say before A loud familiar sound of the food timer going off triggering Donna. âGET THE FUCK OUT! ALL OF YOU GET THE FUCK OUTâ Donna yells waving the knife around
You do as told bolting out of the kitchen with your pudding in hand. Michael follows close behind trying to catch up with you. You bump into some people as you run through the house like kids. You do your best to keep Michael at a distance and not drop the pan. He finally gets tired on your third lap around the house giving up when you run up the stairs. You laugh at his lack of stamina and you use the time to hide the pan in the empty closet in the hallway. Once youâre back downstairs you decide to sit on the couch to catch your breath.
You sit down on the plastic-covered couch next to a sleeping old lady and cousin Michelle. Stevieâs on the other side her along with Lee âWhat was that about?â Michelle asked with a small chuckle. As you get comfortable on the couch âI donât even want to get into itâ you say closing your eyes âDo you two fight every year?â Stevie asks leaning forward so he can see you better. âWe didnât fight last year,â you say with your eyes still closed.
âYou werenât here last year,â Stevie says scrunching up his face in confusion. âWell, I guess that answers your question,â you say while yawning. You open your eyes realizing you forgot to ask something. âOh I almost forgot,â you say slowly lowering your voice
âDo you know who this is?â you mouth gesturing to the old lady next to you with her mouth wide open. You watch as Mitchell's gears turn as she tries to remember âI think that's my auntâ Michelle laughs blowing smoke out the side of her mouth. âSince when do you smoke without me?â you say plucking the blunt out of her hand taking a pull âSince you decided on playing tag with Micheal and left me with Dumb and Dumber,â Michelle says gesturing to Fak and his brother. âOh no...what the fuck are they wearing?â you say blowing out smoke âIt was bad enough on one,â you cough passing the blunt back to Michelle. âIt's like the shining but worseâ Michelle says, making you laugh
âSo Whatâs up with you and cousin?â Michelle asks taking a pull. You let out a sigh mentally preparing yourself for the conversation. âToo much,â you say slouching slightly on the couch âAt first it was good, I didnât wanna ruin our friendship, but I liked Carmen. But I also wasnât ready for a relationship And he didn't like labels and we liked each other so it seemed perfect. We'll just figure out our feelings together type shit, you knowâ you say making unnecessary hand motions. âMmhhâ cousin Michelle hums before taking another pull passing you the blunt. You take a pull before talking âBut then you blink and itâs been 3 years and he still doesnât want a relationship,â you say feeling your brain start to get cloudy.
âdo you know this whole time you guys have been calling me Carmâs girlfriend we had never made it official, I was never actually his girlfriend,â you say annoyed âBut you guys fucked right?â Michelle asks concerned âOf course we fucked, we fucked a lotâŠa concerning amount at one pointâŠâ Michelle slightly scrunches up her face in disgust âYou asked!â you say in a high-pitched voice defending yourself
âAnyway,â you say shaking the memory out of your head, taking another quick puff before handing the bunt back. âShould we be smoking next to her?â You ask looking over at the old lady sleep mouth still open. âSheâll be fineâŠif anything were doing her a favor sheâs like 103,â Michelle said taking a sip of her wine. âReally?â âYepâ âThatâs insane, good for her,â you say nodding
âAnyway, Iâm saying all of this to say, Iâm ready for a real relationship and he's not. I love him to death cousin but I canât anymoreâŠâ you say reaching for her cup of wine. âIs that why you didnât come last year?â Michelle says passing the cup to you âThat and, I love LA cousinâŠI love it. Chicago will always be my home but I just thrive in LAâŠand I don't do that here, you know?â you say taking a sip of her wine. âI get it, Princess, I'm happy you found somewhere away from all this shit. Just don't forget we're family, It might not be by blood but youâre still my baby cousinâ Michelle says, making you laugh. âAlways,â you say with a smile
You don't realize youâve fallen asleep until youâre waking up to Michaelâs voice. Heâs sitting on an ottoman in the living room, with a gray blanket around his head like a Russian ladyâs scarf. Telling the story of how you got your nickname, you sit up so you can hear better. Youâve heard this story a hundred times but you never got tired of listening to it because it was about you.
âAnd then this little girl with two puffs in her hair in a princess costume comes stomping up the porch steps demanding to see Carmenâ Michale says while laughing making a stomping motion while sitting. You smile at his use of the word puffs, something he wouldn't know without you. âAnd of course, I'm confused I've never seen this kid before and sheâs demanding things?â Michael says laughing âSo I go to the door to tell her off and I kid you not, seven year old y/n looks me up and down and says, âI said Carmenâ The whole living room chuckles including you. Your eyes drift behind Michael to the entrance of the room where Carmen is standing. Once The two of you lock eyes everyoneâs voices begin to fade into the background and you can almost barely hear Michael talking about the stink attitude you had as a kid.
âCan we talk?â Carmen mouthes leaning against the entrance. You nod grudgingly and Carmy smiles slightly walking upstairs to his room. You follow behind him in silence internally, cursing yourself for agreeing. Once in his childhood bedroom, you sit awkwardly on the bed that you and Carmen share so many memories in, in your teenage years. âSoooo You wanted to talk?â you say looking around the room trying to avoid the awkward silence. âUm yeahâŠâ Carmen says leaning against his old desk opening a box of cigarettes. âI uhhhâŠI wanted to say I'm sorryâ Carmen says looking down, fidgeting with a cigarette âFor all that shit I put you through, with the internship and all the arguing you didn't deserve that,â Carmen says bringing the cigarette to his lips. âIâm glad you finally realized that,â you say slightly irritated.
there's an awkward bit of silence while Carmen digs in his pocket for a lighter making you rethink your tone âI'm sorryâŠyouâre trying to apologize which is rare so ill try to be less of an assholeâ you say making Carmen chuckle âbut Carmen I hope you know an apology isn't gonna make everything betterâ You say trying not to sound too much like an ass âthen what willâ Carmen mumbles âhuh?â you ask barely able to hear him âwhat the fuck can I do to make it better y/n. I miss my best friendâŠIâv tried to call you, but you got me blocked -â you cut him off quick âoh my god can cut the fucking act Carmenâ you say shaking you head annoyed but his words. âwhat act?â He asks his tone slightly rising
âHere you go..â you say rolling your eyes knowing heâs about to start yelling âWHAT FUCKING ACT-â Carmen yells you cut him off âTHE ACT WHERE YOU PRETEND TO ACTUALLY GIVE FUCKâ says raising your voice this time. âYou donât get to pretend like all we had was a falling out and now your â best friendâ wonât answer your calls, Carmen you broke my heart⊠that's why youâre fucking blocked. I donât want to speak to you! â you yell feeling yourself get increasingly angry
âYOU FUCKING LEFT ME, I DIDN'T LEAVE YOU!â Carmen yells turning slightly red âYES BECAUSE WE WERNâT GOING ANYWHERE!â You yell âIf it were up to you we would be friends with benefits until we're fucking 80!â Carmen goes silent which just makes you angrier âYeah Iâm done,â you say standing up to make your way to the door but are stopped by Carmen grabbing your wrist.
â I still want us to talk,â he says pulling you away from the door and into him. It had been a long time since you had been that close to him and as much as you didnât want to admit it you liked it. âWhat can we talk about that we didnât already sayâ you say lowering your voice, the proximity making you slightly nervous.
Carmenâs eyes flicker down to your lips and then back to your eyes âDid I already tell you that I love youâ Carmen knows what he's doing so he takes advantage of the situation dropping his grasp from your wrist to your hand, rubbing his thumb over your knuckles soothingly. âItâs not happening Carmen,â you say stepping back while trying to pull your hand from his but he doesnât let you out of his grasp. âWhy not?â He ask pulling you back in the same position as before sounding oblivious to the argument you two had minutes ago. âBecause it not gonna change shit, you're going to back to having a blast in New York and I'm gonna go back to doing what I was doing in LA,â you say trying to act unaffected by his touch. He suddenly lets go of your hand and you instantly miss the feeling. âWhat Do you think Iâm doing in New York y/n?â Carmen asks anger slightly lacing his voice
You roll your eyes âSo youâre trying to tell me youâre not enjoying yourself at all in New-â Carmen quickly cut in â-No, no Iâm not enjoying myself, Iâm fucking miserable. I canât sleep, Iâm throwing
Up all the time-âIt was your turn interrupt â THEN WHY? WHY LEAVE, WHY EVEN FUCKING DO IT!â You yell your anger getting control over you âBECAUSE I CANâT STAY HERE, MICHAEL DOESNâT WANT ME HERE YOU DONâT WANT ME!â Carmen yells then immediately tries to gain his composure âi dont see why I would stayâ Carmen says wiping his face with a frustrated sigh. âI just miss you y/nâŠI know I would be better with you thereâ He says looking down at his hands with tired eyes. As much as you wanted to fight it, your heart ached at his words and your subconscious urged you to walk closer. You missed him desperately, and that little wif of his scent that you got earlier was enough for you to break.
Once you closed the gap between you too you started tenderly running your hand through Carmenâs hair like you used to like you used to. His shoulders relaxed and he looked up at you with slightly darker eyes swirling with sadness and desire. You knew what was going to follow and you hated the fact you yearned for it.
You don't know who started the kiss first but you knew it was hungry and passionate. In seconds Carmen had you on your back on the bed with his body on top of you. You two kissed each other like starved animals,â Fuck I missed thisâ Carmen huffs breaking the kiss to pull off his shirt. You almost moan at the sight of his newly grown muscles. âProve it,â you say with a wicked smile creeping onto your lips. Carmen doesn't reply right away lips crashing back down on yours. Without breaking the kiss Carmen takes your hand and guides it down the front of his pants. where you feel his hard bulge through his jeans. You gasp at the feeling and you feel Carmen smile against your lips. âIs that proof enough?â he whispers into your ear making shivers run down your spine. Trying not to move too much you fumble with his belt buckle. After a couple of tugs, the belt comes undone and Carmen rips off his pants throwing them in a corner of the room
You pull up your dress bunching it at your waist so Carmen has easy access. He groans at your eagerness which makes your walls clench around nothing. He starts leaving kisses on your kneecap down to your inner thigh making you shiver. âI need to taste youâ Carmen groans now looking up at you from between your thighs âWe don't have timeâ you moan out as his kisses get closer and closer to your heat. âI work fast,â Carmen says pulling off your panties in one swift movement âfuck you're so wetâ he groans ducking his head down between your thighs. You sink your hand into his hair pulling him up âI need you now!â you say sternly bringing his face closer to yours.
â How badly?â
He groans into your neck making your walls clench around nothing again. âBadlyâ you breathe out wrapping your arms around Carmenâs neck and pulling him closer. He lets out a low groan looking down between the both of freeing himself from his boxers. Lining himself up with your entrance he wastes no time pushing himself halfway inside you. You let out a loud moan and then quickly brought your hand to your mouth remembering his whole family was Downstairs. Carmen smiles at the reaction pushing himself all the way in. Which made Your eyes roll to the back of your head at the full size of him. you missed how it felt between the two of you when you fucked the LA dick just didn't compare.
âFuck Itâs like you got tighterâ Carmen moans starting a steady pace, you wanted to reply but the feeling of him inside was too overpowering. His thrust became deeper and faster and you wonder if he was going to create a new record for how fast youâve came. âDONâT STOP!â you moan loudly reaching your hand up to touch the headboard. âI won't, I won't ever stopâ Carmen groans continuing his thrusts now circling your clit with his hand. You almost see stars at the added sensation âYou're squeezing me so fucking tightâ Carmen says trying to catch his breath. âOoo I fucking hate youâ you almost scream out feeling your release nearing. âYou hate me?â he asks pressing his forehead against yours, you canât vocally, respond so you know your nod, your head. âNo, say itâ Carmen groans angryly as he pounds into you. You breathe heavily and try to calm yourself âI hate- OH MY FUCKING GOD!â You cry, you try to gather the words but your orgasm hits you like a truck before you can finish. âIf you hated me would have gotten this removed by nowâ Carmen huffs out dragging his finger over the heart tattoo with a C in it. positioned on the corner of your pelvic area that you got while drunk in college. Carmen keeps fucking you through your orgasm but by the way you're squeezing him you can tell he's not far behind. âI canât fucking leave thisâ you hear him mumble before his thrust becomes sporadic. He's quiet until he's close to finishing pushing himself in deep as he can âfuck I'm cummingâ Carmen says pumping his seed deep inside you.
~~~~
It's not long after that you quickly get up and put your clothes back on, As he got up to do the same there was an awkward silence that fell on the room. You had this sad feeling weighing on your shoulders and you didn't know how to explain it. but you knew you had to leave. You wonder if the dead silence in the room was actually, awkward or was it only like that because you felt awkward. When you went to the corner of the room to retrieve your panties Carmen finally spoke. âIs something wrong?â he asked slightly irritated with how you were acting. âNo, I just don't want anyone to get suspicious,â you say plainly walking out the door now fully dressed leaving him by himself. You go to the bathroom to fix your hair and makeup waiting until you hear Carmen go downstairs before leaving. Once downstairs you sit back down on the couch next to Michelle.
âYou smell like sex,â Michelle says leaning over into your ear. âUggghhâ you groan burying your head in your hands making her Laugh âGirl I fucked uppp,â you say face still in your hands. âWhatâs the issue you don't want to get back together with him?âMichelle asks trying to stifle her laughter. âNo, not right now⊠I got too much shit going on right in LA to let him drag me to New York⊠And thatâ you say making a hand gesture upstairs âis gonna make him think I'm going with himâ You say getting increasingly stressed. Michelle goes silent for a while before finally talking âYou gotta tell him Princessâ she says giving you a sad smile âYou right I-â
You cut yourself off realizing that thereâs a conversation going on around you. Quickly you gather that the conversation between Lee and Michael has become serious. âIâm sorry?â Michael asks confused âThe storyâŠweâve heard it a million times,â Lee says gesturing to the people in the room âNo Lee, like you haveâŠand cousin has,â Michael says gesturing to Richie behind him, âI haven'tâ cousin Michelle says raising her hand âMe neitherâ you say raising your hand too even though you probably had â I have but I like itâ fak brother chimes in
âIt's a good story,â Fak says nodding, trying to de-escalate the situation. âYeah Lee chill out or fuck off let us tell the fucking story,â Richie says readjusting himself in the chair, annoyed âANYWAYS, after finding the ATM-â Riche starts but is cut off by Lee â-no Iâll finish it. Iâll finish it! You sold the car and then at the end, you find the horseâ Lee says with a proud shit-eating grin. âAss holeâ you mumble under your breath, shaking your head in annoyance. âGood for you Lee that's⊠that's great, youâre like a real genuine fucking asshole,â Michael says looking up at him annoyed. âB-Because I cut off the story you told a million times? Why donât you finish your business plan?â Lee says well, moving the glass of whiskey back and forth in his hand. âNow You're doing too much,â you say followed by Richie âAll right thatâs enough!â Fiche says trying to end the conversation. âCome on, you're veering,â Michelle says trying to reason with Lee âWhere's that tomato sauce prospectus, Michael?â he asks doubling down. âCome on Lee cut itâ you try to say sternly seeing Michael stare off dazed in the distance. âWhereâs the frozen pizza plan?-â
âWhat's wrong with you?â you ask watching Lee persistently poke âWhat's wrong with me? What's wrong with him h-â Michelle tries to cut him off again âYou're veering!â she yells again trying to shut Lee up. âThat's ahhhâŠ. thatâs enough,â Richie says uncomfortably glancing over at Michael. Uncle Jimmy, walks in a part of you relaxes hoping the conversation will lighten. âHi unc,â Michelle says with a light voice, hoping to switch the vibe in the room. âHey, hunny,â he says, with a smile. You give a small wave âNice to see you princessâ Thereâs an awkward beat of silence âfucks going on in hereâŠâ Jimmy says looking around the room.
âThis jackoff talking shit,â Michael says looking down and you roll your eyes at the possibility of another argument âWhich jackoff,â Unc asks readjusting his glasses âThis jackoff,â Lee says pointing to himself. You had to physically stop yourself from saying âAt least he knows itâ
âWhat about jackoff?â Uncle Jimmy asks still confused. âAbout how like I don't finish shitâŠâ Michael says starting to trail off âNot stories he finishes thoseâŠover and over,â Lee says with a drunk smile.
âMikey, come onâŠ.â Uncle Jimmy says giving him a weak shrug. you know theyâre right, but you canât help but suck your teeth. Pete walks into the room sounding like Santa Claus talking about a tuna delivery with a square metal pan, in his hand. You physically cringe at the idea of it being fish â Mikey what is up broâ Pete says smiling, repeatedly, tapping Michael on the shoulder in an awkward kid-like manner.
âYou know itâs seven fishes right Pete?â Michael asks looking up at the metal pan in his hand. âYeah⊠that's why I brought thisâ Pete says pointing to the pan with a smile. âThatâs the eighth fish bro,â Michelle says knowingly. You donât even chime in knowing poor Pete, was about to get chewed alive âWhat we canât have one more?â he says smiling and looking around the room awkwardly. âThat makes absolutely no sense. I canât even figure out the logic of thatâ Lee says continuing to Dick eat. âWhat?â Pete says with an awkward laugh, looking around the room. âYou're so fuckedâ Uncle Jimmy laughs giving him a tight-lipped smile.
Carmen walks into the room to tell everybody that dinner is ready âFamily come on letâs sit Dinners ready!â Carmen says, clapping his hands trying to get everybody up. âHEY, no way carmy, whatâs up brother?â Pete says putting his arm around Carmen awkwardly. âHey, hey- woah woah woah, what is that? What is that?â Carmen says pointing to the metal pan in Pete's hand âDon't tell himâ Michelle says from the couch You donât say anything hoping Carmen didnât notice you on the couch. âIt's nothing, it's nothing,â Pete says trying to play it off. âS-stevie what is that, What is it?â Carmen asked Stevie from the couch âYouâre going to be upset, but his heart was in the right place Carmâ Stevie said, with a tight, lipped smile. âItâs a tuna casserole,â Lee says from behind Carmen and you actually have to stop yourself from laughing because he resembles a demon hiding over his shoulder like that. âIt's seven fishes, Pete,â Carmen says and you can you can already tell heâs about to blow. â I knowâŠ.they didnât communicate,â Pete says sadly â This would make eight fishes, That- That would make us assholes right?â Carmen asked the vein in his neck starting to protrude the more he spoke. âWhy are you doing this to me?â Carmen asks irritated
looking up at him. âOk I-â Pete starts âDONâT LET HER FUCKING SEE IT,â Carmen says walking away. You feel a little bad after watching the scene unfold knowing that Carmen was probably taking out some of the anger you caused on poor Pete. You watch as Sugar greets Pete grabbing the tin pan from him and throwing it outside.
~~~~
Right before the dinner starts, you catch Michael in the hallway upstairs while youâre looking for the phone you left in Carm's room. âHey Mikey,â you say giving him a slightly sad smile thinking of the conversation in the living room. âHey sis,â Michael says with a smile like he's trying to hide the fact that heâd been crying. The sad look on his face physically pains you and walk over to give him a big hug. âYou know I love you to
the moon back right?â you say tightening the hug. You feel Michael nod and you smile. âDonât let Lee piss you off, he was doing way too muchâ you say finally releasing him from the hug, walking over to the steps.
You sit on the top stair and gesturing for Michael to sit too. He does sit back some so you both can fit. âI'm not worried about that prickâ Michael scoffs readjusting himself. âIt's ok to beâŠhe said some fucked up shit,â you say looking over at him. âIâm not though,â Michael says sternly. Silence fills the room for a moment as you carefully think your next words. âMichael I know You might think that no one sees you but I want you to know I doâŠâ You look over at him for a response, He doesnât say anything so you continue â I'm not going to lie and act like I know what youâre struggling withâŠbut I know you. And I know youâre hurting I-â he cuts you off â-I am fine princess I promiseâ Michael says, trying to laugh it off
âMichael I'm dead fucking serious,â you say looking him in his slightly glossy eyes. â I donât want to see the end up like my momâŠ.I see it in you're eyes that fogginess, the sadness. I don't care what time of day it's or how you think I will see you, You fucking call me okâ you say feeling your eyes begin to well up with tears âshit Iâm not supposed to be cryingâ you laugh wiping your tears and look up to see Michael eyes starting to do the same. âI just really don't want you to die,â you say trying to wipe your tears as you speak but they keep coming. Michael elopes you into a big hug âI'm not going anywhere Princessâ he says his voice breaking slightly. You feel his warm tears drop on your shoulder and enjoy the fact that Michael feels secure enough to cry with you. When you two are done crying on each other Michael pulls back and you wipe your eyes with the back of your hand âYou smell like sexâ Michael says plainly causing you to laugh, small tears still dropping from your eyes. âYeah me and CarmenâŠâ you say trailing off âI gathered,â Michael says laughing hard which made you feel better.
You calm yourself down taking a deep breath before speaking âWell before I started crying, I was trying to tell you, if you ever miss me or need somewhere to crash or you even just want a change of scenery. You can come to visit me at My place in LA becauseâŠ.I'll be there permanentlyâ you say nervously waiting for his reaction. âDo you like it over there?â Michael asks the corner of his lip twitching down. âLove it,â you say with a small smile. âThen Iâm happy for you,â he says with a sad smile.
âYouâre the first person I told,â you say letting out a sigh you didnât know you were holding in. âNot even Carmy?â Michael asks raising his eyebrow. âNot even Carmy,â you say shaking your head. âMichael! Y/N WHERE WAITING!â you hear someone yell from downstairs. â I meant what I said Michael call me, I sent you the address already,â you say sitting up, walking down the stairs to the dining room, âIâM SERIOUS!â you yell out from the bottom of the step.
Worm Arc 18 thoughts:
Well that sure just happened
I'm fine
Noelle ate my daughter. But I'm fine. It's fine.
Her girlfriends are gonna save her!
I'm fiiiiine
Anyway, that's like, the end of the arc so there's a lot of other stuff that happens!
Taylor casually drops that she's mostly blind in conversation and Brian kinda freaks out. Understandably.
She got eye drops that she is supposed to be doing but never mentions doing them. I'm very disappointed in her. I'm also worried her eyes aren't going to ever get better.
I do love that the moment Dinah says she only has a 58% chance of going home and Taylor realizes it's because of her, she forces the situation by taking Dinah home right away. She is far from perfect, but she does have her moments.
RACHEL LET DINAH PET HER DOG!!!!! AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! LOOK AT THE GROWTH!!
One of my favorite lines, when Taylor asks Dinah the chance of trouble before they go into the medical clinic "When there's trouble, it's you. Â Eighty percent of the time." Just, kinda embodies the spirit of Worm I think.
I'm still fine.
Taylor sure thinks about Rachel as Rachel a lot now, instead of mostly as Bitch. GAAAAAY.
I really want to know what's on those papers Dinah left for Taylor. Triumph saw them but didn't seem to react. One might have been a message for him, since Dinah would know he would see it. Something that will come into play later maybe.
I love Parian making a giant wiener dog for everyone to ride on. Like, it is a definite upgrade in transportation from "door with glass stuck in it dragged down the street" but it doesn't have much of a supervillain vibe to it.
Noelle just starts it off with grabbing possibly the strongest cape available in Brockton Bay. At a minimum, one of the most versatile to clone. No big deal. Not like even just normal Vista could become very dangerous if she wanted to be evil.
Freaking PRT all "this is a Class A instead of a Class S cause Eidolon is a big man baby and needs to punch something all on his own to prove he's strong". Sure are helping people Alexandria. Good job. What a hero.
I think Eidolon is Bargain Bin Scion. Scion Lite. Blue Light Special Scion. A shitty version of Scion created by Cauldron basically.
Clockblocker is so fucking fascinated with Skitter it's amazing.
Tattletale made Eidolon maaaaaad! I love her.
I'm perfectly fine.
The scene with meeting the Chicago Wards, oh god I loved it so much! Skitter tells Bitch to clear the plywood out of a window and she just instantly fucking kicks it open, then a giant swarm comes in and swirls around everyone and covers Skitter, making her hair move and trailing bugs behind her like a gown, and then starts speaking with the swarm. And Tattletale waits until the perfect moment before asking the Wards their names and powers, very clearly backing Skitter up as her 2nd. Just such a "ok I was playing nice but now I need you to know who you are working with!" power move. Fucking amazing. Also it was Skitter being assisted by Bitch and Tattletale! GAAAAAAAAAAAY!! LESBIAN SUPERVILLAIN POWER POLYCULE!
I think Grace has neat powers but could have been more creative with her name. I fucking love Tecton though, assume tinker. Dude has got to love fights like this, where he is allowed to do all the property damage he wants. He'd make a good villain.
The other two are kinda neat too but they didn't last very long.
Every time they are going anywhere Bitch specifically offers Skitter a ride. GAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!
I love seeing the range of power adjustments the clone Vistas get. Some are pretty basic - can do stuff from farther away or not be slowed down if a lot of people are around - but then we get ones like Paper Mario Vista and Imagine Dragons Vista, with much more wild powers.
Everyone stand back while Eidolon goes and shows us all how strong he is! God.
I'm 100% FINE.
Side effect of being blinded probably, but it is neat how good Taylor is getting at listening, and sometimes even seeing, through her bugs! Just listening in on Eidolon and Noelle from blocks away.
Imp almost gets crushed to death by Eidolon's gravity power cause she ignores warnings from Skitter to run. Sounds about right.
Noelle making rat clones and bug clones (that Skitter can't control) is fun.
Fucking projectile vomit attack suddenly! Did Noelle absorb the girl from the Exorcist??
Texas Wards kinda getting their ass kicked. (Also what the hell is going on in Texas that the whole state apparently just has the one Wards team, vs most places have a Ward team per city?)
Fight is going kinda poorly. Travelers show up to help! And then Trickster betrays everyone to feed my daughter to Noelle! AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm fine.
The Most Powerful Man in the World Interlude thoughts:
Scion just really is empty in there isn't he?
Not a person, just a construct of the entities in 3 dimensional space. Sphere moving through Flatland and being seen as a circle style. No mind, just does what this guy tells him.
Duke is a very good dog.
Kevin talking about Scion 100% sounds like someone talking about a lover that has been lots of trouble for them but that they just can't quite.
Lisette is having a weird day.
I really wonder how the next Endbringer attack is going to go now that Scion has been told to kill them. Wonder if it'll be different.
Crusader Interlude thoughts:
Shockingly, it turns out that the Nazi is an asshole. News at 11.
Night and Fog were basically constructed by this Gesellschaft group. Seems like a branch of Cauldron pretending to be Nazis for more control over things. Or maybe not directly a branch of Cauldron, but they get powers from Cauldron. Maybe not related, but they make weapons, which is very much what Cauldron can do, and we haven't seen anyone else yet reliably make powers with control over the outcome.
This poor TA is having a bad day.
Taylor triggered 2 or more times in that locker. I was 100% positive of that the second the TA said "You canât really distinguish a single trigger event from having two in quick succession." I probably should have realized this earlier.
Really curious where Theo and Aster's stories are going. I could see one or both of them being a major part of the end of the world (based on stuff from Trickster's visions on stuff from Noelle's interlude I'm thinking a 3rd or 4th generation cape might play a part in it), but I could also see them being red herrings.
Theo is upset but realistically getting abandoned and left with the PRT is the best option that could have happened to him.
Jessica Yamada Interlude thoughts:
This poor woman
Faultline Interlude thoughts:
OH MY GOD Gregor and Shamrock are super fucking cute together!!!!
Faultline is amazing and very organized and detail oriented and an assertive leader who wears a dress shirt with slacks and cowboy boots and threatens to get a bullwhip and I would really like her to tell me what to do k thx.
Not positive I would trust the minor precog abilities of Shamrock to make me Simurgh proof, but it's better than nothing.
The quarantine zone of the city of Madison is doing great!
Wasn't expecting to get to see Matroyshka again, that's neat! She should probably stop eating people but otherwise she's fun.
Faultline just not being able to stand Tattletale is wonderful. I hope they bother each other for years to come.
I like this crew, so I was not happy that they got really fucked up by Contessa. But I also want to like Contessa (as much as I can like someone who works for Cauldron) and this did make her seem really badass.
Noelle Interlude thoughts:
I'm fine.
Regent keeping up the jokes under pressure, good for him.
Finally got some good descriptions of Noelle's powers doing stuff which was very good.
I'm fine.
Also fun to see various clones and their powers.
AND THE VISION! OH MY GOD THE VISION! So much good info from that. It helped me get a much better idea of things and confirmed a lot of things I already thought. (Like Cauldron has basically hijacked an entity, more or less. Not the details on how though.)
I'm fine.
The fact that Noelle can let the god dandruff take control is interesting. Like her connection never got fully closed compared to other people. Which is what I assumed only taking half a vial did. Really curious to see if we ever get more info on Oliver.
Her Earth Bet self is like, 15 years younger. But still has the same name. Kinda wild.
I'm fine.
Also her Earth Bet dad gave her the name Echidna, which like, I get it's the mother of monsters or whatever, but I can only think of the cute adorable little creature!
I'm fine.
I obviously wish Eidolon had been able to defeat Noelle and save my daughter but him having a big sad about it not being fair that he can't get stronger is pretty funny too. I do not like the guy.
I'm fine.
I'm sure Tattletale has a plan and everything will work out.
I'm fine.
I'm 100% absolutely fine.
