#Repost @sspw with @repostapp ・・・ How Should A Breast Self-Exam Be Performed? _ _ 1) In the Shower Using the pads of your fingers, move around your entire breast in a circular pattern moving from the outside to the center, checking the entire breast and armpit area. Check both breasts each month feeling for any lump, thickening, or hardened knot. Notice any changes and get lumps evaluated by your healthcare provider. _ _ 2) In Front of a Mirror Visually inspect your breasts with your arms at your sides. Next, raise your arms high overhead. Look for any changes in the contour, any swelling, or dimpling of the skin, or changes in the nipples. Next, rest your palms on your hips and press firmly to flex your chest muscles. Left and right breasts will not exactly match—few women's breasts do, so look for any dimpling, puckering, or changes, particularly on one side. _ _ 3) Lying Down When lying down, the breast tissue spreads out evenly along the chest wall. Place a pillow under your right shoulder and your right arm behind your head. Using your left hand, move the pads of your fingers around your right breast gently in small circular motions covering the entire breast area and armpit. Use light, medium, and firm pressure. Radiation. Radiation therapy (also called radiotherapy) uses high-energy rays to kill cancer cells. It affects cells only in the part of the body that is treated with the radiation. Breast cancer radiation therapy may be used to destroy any remaining mutated cells that remain in the breast or armpit area after surgery. ::: Some people with Stage 0 (DCIS) and most people with Stage 1 invasive #breastcancer and higher, who have had a #lumpectomy, can expect radiation therapy to be a part of their treatment regimen. ::: Most radiation therapy is administered by a radiation #oncologist at a radiation center and usually begins three to four weeks after surgery. Out here in these streets with a band aid on both knees. Thankfully I wore a long dress today. ::: For the past few weeks I’ve been having extreme swelling & knee pain and could hardly walk a couple days. For the past week or so I’ve been treated for the possibility of having gout in my knee. After changing my diet this week to strictly vegetarian, I also had to go in today for cortisone injections. The needles are placed in the joints of my knees and filled with steroids to help eliminate the knee pain. Let’s pray that it helps. Any advice for someone who is about to start your form of chemo? ~ Madame President :::::::::: Chemotherapy drugs kill or disable cancer cells. Chemotherapy is a treatment option for most types of breast cancer. The decision to use chemotherapy is based on the tumor stage and certain #tumor characteristics (such as #hormone receptor status), as well as your age, overall health and personal preferences. ::: Chemotherapy for early and locally advanced breast cancer After breast surgery (adjuvant chemotherapy) For those with early breast cancer, chemotherapy is usually given after breast surgery (called #adjuvant chemotherapy), but before #radiation therapy. Adjuvant chemotherapy helps lower the risk of breast cancer recurrence by getting rid of cancer cells that might still be in the body. ::: Before breast surgery (neoadjuvant chemotherapy) Chemotherapy is sometimes used before surgery (called neoadjuvant or preoperative chemotherapy). In women with large tumors who need a mastectomy, neoadjuvant chemotherapy may shrink the tumor enough so a lumpectomy becomes an option. Y’all knew #SSPW volunteer and Dollface @lindsaylouslew wouldn’t let us partake in a community initiative without bringing bags & bags of goodies for our feminine hygiene drive. 💕 Lindsay has stage iv cancer and was a little achy but that didn’t stop her and Baby Alice from coming by the other night. We sat around comparing and complaining about our aches and pains. Did your ability to swim or learning to swim change after your breast cancer diagnosis/surgeries? ::: I didn’t know how to swim or float prior to my breast cancer diagnosis. After my breast cancer diagnosis, I developed a love for traveling, especially water destinations. I figured it would be an awesome time to learn to swim... One problem, my arm doesn’t rotate the same as others thanks to all of the surgeries I’ve had on my torso. I also tried learning to swim with a group of disable folks and that didn’t work either. I definitely think I need private lessons with a very patient teacher, who has experience with women who also suffer with the same issues.
