Radiation. Radiation therapy (also called radiotherapy) uses high-energy rays to kill cancer cells. It affects cells only in the part of the body that is treated with the radiation. Breast cancer radiation therapy may be used to destroy any remaining mutated cells that remain in the breast or armpit area after surgery. ::: Some people with Stage 0 (DCIS) and most people with Stage 1 invasive #breastcancer and higher, who have had a #lumpectomy, can expect radiation therapy to be a part of their treatment regimen. ::: Most radiation therapy is administered by a radiation #oncologist at a radiation center and usually begins three to four weeks after surgery. The #radiation is used to destroy undetectable cancer cells and reduce the risk of #cancer recurring in the affected breast. ::: There are two main kinds of radiation therapy that may be considered, and some people have both. External Bearm Breast Cancer Radiation (Traditional cancer-killing rays delivered by a large machine) Internal Breast Cancer Radiation (Newer reatments that inject radioactive cancer-killing treatments only in the affected area) ::: Keep in mind that the course of treatment you decide is something you should discuss with your radiation oncologist in order to ensure that it is as effective as possible. #Repost @drcindymduke ・・・ Did you know, Men can get Breast Cancer too? I know because a male relative of mine did... * Compared to Breast Cancer in women, it’s rare! Less than 1% (1 in 1000) of men will get Breast Cancer. However, if caught early, a man with Breast Cancer has exceptional chances of surviving the disease. * While diagnosis and treatment of Breast Cancer in men is similar to the process for women, it is highly recommended that any man with Breast Cancer get genetic testing to see if he is a carrier for the Breast Cancer gene (e.g BRCA). This is important to do because if he has a daughter who inherits the gene, she has an up to 80% chance of developing breast cancer and up to 40% chance of developing ovarian cancer. In addition, he and his sons, if they inherit the gene, are at risk for developing prostate cancer at a young age. * So, how can a guy get screened for Breast Cancer? Firstly, he or his healthcare provider should do a Breast exam. Specifically, if you feel a hard lump or growth underneath the nipple or areola, you should get it checked out, ASAP. Men carry a higher mortality, from Breast Cancer, than women do, because awareness among men is less and they are less likely to assume a lump is Breast Cancer, which can cause a delay in seeking treatment. * Which men seem to be at higher risk for developing Breast Cancer? Those with first degree relatives (Dad, Mom, Brother, Sister) who had Breast Cancer, those with history of exposure to radiation or those exposed to prolonged and high levels of estrogen hormone. * If you’re a guy, or you know a guy, who might be high risk for developing Breast Cancer, go see your healthcare provider. Get examined. Get genetic counseling. * 💕💕Early Detection Saves Lives!💕💕 * #rethinkpink #breastcancerawareness #mengetbreastcancertoo #earlydetectionsaveslives #blueribboncampaign #familymedicine #hormonetherapy #iseeyououtherelookinglikeablessing #iseeyououtherelookinglikeablessingBeatCancer https://www.instagram.com/p/Bo8aEfglj1D/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1n39daiibw22m

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!! 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Death rates from breast cancer have been declining, in part due to better screening and early detection, increased awareness, and continued improvement in treatment options. Yay! My mammogram re-scan was normal! Huge relief! ALWAYS be vigilant about noticing ANY changes! All was good THIS time, but you never know what will show up between this scan and the next. #CancerSucks I make a big deal of it #inMemoryOfMyMom #inHonorOfMyMom and remember, #MenGetBreastCancerToo #FeelYourBoobs. If you don’t want to, get your partner or even a friend to feel them. Partners DO find lumps. #earlydetectionsaveslives

The American Cancer Society estimates for breast cancer in men in the United States for 2017 are: About 2,470 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed. About 460 men will die from breast cancer. Breast cancer is about 100 times less common among men than among women. For #men, the lifetime #risk of getting breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000. The number of breast cancer cases in men relative to the population has been fairly stable over the last 30 years. ---------- We don't yet completely understand the causes of breast cancer in men, but researchers have found several factors that may increase the risk of getting it. As with female #breastcancer, many of these factors are related to your body's sex #hormone levels. ---------- The risk of breast cancer goes up as a man ages. On average, men with breast cancer are about 68 years old when they are diagnosed. ---------- Breast cancer risk is increased if other members of the family (blood relatives) have had breast cancer. About 1 out of 5 men with breast cancer have a close relative, male or female, with the disease. ---------- A man whose chest area has been treated with radiation has an increased risk of developing breast cancer. ---------- Men with a mutation (defect) in the #BRCA2 gene have an increased risk of breast cancer, with a lifetime risk of about 6 in 100. #BRCA1 mutations can also cause breast cancer in men, but the risk is lower, about 1 in 100. Although mutations in these genes most often are found in members of families with many cases of breast and/or ovarian #cancer, they have also been found in men with breast cancer who did not have a strong #familyhistory. Mutations in CHEK2 and PTEN genes also may be responsible for some breast cancers in men. ---------- Heavy drinking (of alcoholic beverages) increases the risk of breast cancer in men. ------------------------------- #shaysharpespinkwishes #sspw #KnowYourBody #dna #mengetbreastcancertoo #prostatecancer #educate #FeelSomethingSaySomething #genetics #father #grandfather #radiation (at Shay Sharpe's Pink Wishes)
