These past couple months have been tough. On top of this being Shay Sharpe’s Pink Wishes busy season, I was given the news that I had 2 masses on my liver and 2 on my left breast wall. : : : Due to my already stacked schedule, the holidays & to avoid the constant “what did the dr say”, messages I tackled the non stop STAT messages, calls, appointments, biopsies, labs and bedside procedures privately.... almost. : : : I say almost, because a couple of you knew and held it and me together. Thank you! I spoke to God about all of you! 💜 Thanks for feeding me (literally & figuratively), hanging out with me all day, as I shopped for our Wish Recipients.. before taking me for scans that lasted hours, being at the other end of last minute phone calls to meet me out of town because I was too bloody, sore or sedated to drive myself home, for capturing what was feared to be my first and last family photo, for climbing in my bed with me, for calling/texting at the very moment I needed you, for loving & hugging me, for being scared for me and my favorite gesture of them all.. thanks for not asking any questions and allowing me to be silent. : : : Let me conclude this message by saying, I’m ok! I received a call right before Christmas saying everything is benign! No Evidence of Cancer. Just in time to enjoy my first Christmas as a grandmother. Many of you have asked why must I undergo #HyperBaricOxygenTherapy. I underwent radiation in 2004 and again in 2014, when I had a breast cancer #recurrence. Due to the double dosage of radiation and the bone altering meds I’ve taken during my cancer treatment, three of my ribs are fractured. The condition is called osteoradionecrosis. ~ Madame President :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Osteoradionecrosis is bone death due to #radiation. The #bone dies because radiation damages its blood vessels. Osteoradionecrosis is a rare side effect that develops some time after radiation therapy has ended. It usually occurs in the lower jaw, or mandible. The lower jaw is at risk of osteoradionecrosis because it has a limited blood supply. Very rarely, osteoradionecrosis can start in the upper jaw, or maxilla. Osteoradionecrosis is caused by #radiationtherapy to the bone. It may develop years after radiation therapy for head and neck cancers. The risk of developing osteoradionecrosis increases when the dose of radiation received is greater than 60 grays. It is also higher if the bone treated with radiation is exposed. :: Managing Osteoradinecrosis. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized room. It is done in a special chamber where the pressure inside is higher than the normal pressure of the atmosphere. The higher pressure allows more oxygen to get into your blood, which can help heal damaged and infected tissues. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is used in combination with wound care and surgery. The treatment plan often includes 20 treatments before surgery and 10 more treatments after surgery. I am always in awe when people notice me at public events. This young lady ran up to me and gave me a big hug, during our hot, sweaty, sand workout. As I begged her to not make me cry, she told me that I was her inspiration and life saver while she went through BC treatment. She told me she would even share my photos and posts of courage with her husband. (Aww) She also asked me if I was supposed to be working out with my broken ribs. 🙈 I had never met this young woman until yesterday, but she is officially my new @Bri ckbodiesfitness sand workout buddy. 👯‍♀️ :: For months I have been on various weeks of bedrest and almost stagnant as I waited for test results, scans and procedures, thanks to my broken ribs. Needless to say during that time I’ve gained weight while letting my team feed me get well snacks and Netflix dates. It felt good to get out yesterday for some fresh air and well needed workout. For about 2.5 hours everyday for 6-8 weeks, I will lay inside of a hyperbaric oxygen tank/chamber, in attempt to heal my 3 broken ribs. ::: For years I’ve dealt with the nonstop stabbing pain of rib fractures and hopefully this #therapy can offer me some relief. My #ribs have been #broken since my last radiation cycle in 2015. (I had #radiation in 2005 & 2015) Drs. have just thrown meds at the pain for years, but pills equal #nausea for me, which also comes with its own set of problems including eroding my teeth, due to chronic vomiting. My #chemo suite was amazing! I had a window seat, my #nurse was great, the area had tons of natural light and they offered free beverages and premium snacks. : Today while getting an iron #infusion, I was at a different medical center that didn’t have any bells or whistles, not even a window to look out of. The center is clean and has a friendly #oncology staff, but it needs a little more in terms of patient morale. : Often times we are at these infusion centers for hours upon hours, so a graham cracker and Oj would be nice. My nurse informed me that the medical center stop purchasing all patient snacks with the exception of saltines. Wtf? BENIGN!! :: On Tuesday I had to undergo another breast #biopsy and Fine Needle Aspiration. My procedure was done by 3 amazing female medical professionals. During general conversations all of them randomly talked about medical advances that would better the lives of other women who were in my situation. I was so touched! Three #women who grew up in different parts of the world coming together to not only rule out the possibility of another #breastcancer recurrence for me, but also wanting to help all women. Wow! The power of sisterhood. ♥️ {It was definitely what I needed, considering moments later I would find out that #WGL passed away during my appointment.} :: During my procedure I donated biospecimens for a #clinicaltrial that will hopefully help them find more rapid methods to diagnose breast #cancer. I didn’t have to do any additional testing and they definitely can use whatever tissues or cells that was leftover from my test if it will better the outcomes for women in the future. I want my granddaughters to live in a world without breast cancer. :: I’m still really sore due to the amount of #scartissue that I have in the affected area, along with shoulder pain from holding my arm behind my neck for about 40 mins. I’m ok though. Thankful for the little things.. God thank you for sparing my life time and time again. Thank you for restoring my life twice after cancer and allowing me to enjoy this simple moment. :: I pulled my truck to the side of the road so that my oldest granddaughter, who doesn’t feel well, could watch the geese. She was so excited and also tried feeding them the grapes she just purchased from the farmers market. Terribly bruised. 2 days in the hospital. 13 needle sticks before needing to be ambulanced to another location to get a line placed for CT scans, to rule out possible blood clots in my chest and legs. :: I haven’t felt well for awhile, so I was almost certain that I would end up in the hospital sooner or later. Unfortunately it was sooner. My chest and ribs have been extremely sore for awhile, and because of my recent flight, my Drs wanted to ensure that I didn’t have a blood clot. I am forever in some level of pain due to my 3 broken ribs, as a result of #radiation. :: CT scan and ultrasound came back negative for blood clot, but positive for an area of grave concern in my chest. Sigh.. so next week we will start the process of investigating the area. :: Time to lay down and get some rest. Tomorrow is #NoSocialMediaSunday (I refrain from social media on Sunday’s to focus on Me/self care. {baths, church online, facials, books, new recipes, hot oil treatments, granddaughters, phone calls, etc.}) I will update y’all when I know more, as I don’t know anymore than what’s listed here.
