What injury has impacted you the most?
(Not as many responses this time, but that's because they're longer. Still a long post; responses are by Alexander; Armok; Gwyn and Raven; Vair and Shanz. Also, tw: suicide for Shanz's response.)
Alexander looked to the side. "It's... not a story I like to tell. It isn't even a big one, either." His shoulders rose up, in shame. "When my sister and I were small, our father Vair was watching us spar after giving us a lesson in fighting. My sister..." He sighed. "She jabbed me in the crotch with her practice spear and laughed when I doubled over. Yeah, yeah, laugh it up, Elise, you'll never know that pain, so it's funny to you. But Father immediately came over and asked how bad it was. I'm glad he understands, at least. But it hurt like hell, I'm sure everyone understands. Father scolded her something nasty for doing that, said it was fighting dirty. But when you consider that monsters fight dirty all the time... I wonder if I'd be in for hell if I picked up fighting to protect the kingdom." He shuddered. "I guess that makes me a coward. So be it. I just don't want to suffer. I'm not my sister, I'm not the best fighter and I don't enjoy it. So why put myself through that when there are others who are stronger and better at handling it?"
"Impacted, but in a good way," Armok chortled. He pointed at his head, rapping his knuckles against his cap. "I wrestled a Hinox once. I was in my dragon form when it happened, I didn't have my scale of Sirredes yet. But I was in town, and the town watch said a Hinox was coming, so I decided to help out. Lo and behold, it turns out having four legs and two arms really gives you an edge against those things!" He laughed. "I knocked it down and punched it in the face until it got dizzy, and the militia finished it from there. Some of 'em were a bit frightened by me for taking it down, but most of them were grateful for my help. I didn't win that without getting headbutted, and the town doc said it was probably a concussion. So I was a bit slow for a month, but it healed pretty well."
At the question, Gwyn was silent. She looked to the side, then drew inward, sitting and hugging her legs. Raven decided to speak for her, after checking that their son wasn't in earshot. "... My dear Gwyn was... are you all right with me speaking of this?" He waited for her nod, only deciding to continue after he saw it. "She was captured by... certain enemies of the crown, during her career as a spy. Thank heavens she was found and broken out by other royal agents, but not before suffering some amount of torture. I'm proud to say she never broke, never yielded information. But that sort of experience scarred her. I don't blame her for doubting her employment afterwards. I was not yet a royal guard when she was retrieved, so I was asked to follow her and... keep an eye on her. Not only to ensure her safety, but... no one was sure how she would act after that. I'm sorry, my love." Gwyn shook her head at Raven's apology– nothing to apologize for. "She was in such pain, she would lash out at anyone and everyone. Even and especially me." "And you didn't understand, but you tried anyways," Gwyn's voice shook with sobbing at the recollection. "You were so kind... compassionate.. gentle." She wiped tears from her eyes. "How could I not fall in love with you?" A small smile quirked her lips. "I had many reasons to retire at that point.. but I was certain I had to do it then because of you. I knew I wanted to be with you, and if I died for my kingdom, then I would never know that bliss."
"The destruction of my hometown," Vair answered bluntly. "Losing everything when you're only six tends to 'impact' you harder than most people can imagine." A small, soft hand held his shoulder at that as Shanz stepped up. "It's okay. It's not a question meant to hurt you." While Vair huffed just a bit, Shanz explained in his place. "I'm told my husband had something of a death wish for a bit after that– I wasn't here for it, so this is secondhand knowledge. He wanted vengeance against the dragon that did it, at first, but then he heard the royal guardsmen had taken it down shortly after that tragedy happened. So you felt like you had no purpose, huh." At the query put to him, Vair only grunted. "But friends... friends can give you a new purpose. A six-year-old boy with a thousand-yard stare scares away most of his peers, but Prince Jacinto– as he was back then– approached despite the discomfort he gave everyone else. That's how they're so close, and why Vair took up the path of a knight. Sure, his uncle being a knight himself gave him a leg up, but he did it for his friend." "And you, my love?" Vair looked at Shanz. Shanz cast his gaze downward and away. "... It's not a day I like to remember. When I was eighteen, my world at the time came crashing down on me... and I barely had the power to mitigate it. One day, I was tired of it, sore about everything to do with it, and my mother– who I trusted to be kind and compassionate... she prodded me a just a bit too hard about my responsibilities, and I lashed out in agony. I spent a good hour wallowing in that pain... as if pain is an intense enough word... and I don't know what drove me to contact my friends. But I did. And they talked me out of the unthinkable. They didn't even talk, just listened until I got it all out. That... that was all I needed. So yes, I understand how big friendship can be in someone's life. I owe my own existence to those bonds. And no matter how far I travel... no matter how far behind I leave those friends... those bonds can never be cut."
(As a note: King Jacinto is a muse from @reginalucem; he's her Zelda's dad!)

“Hey Dads!” she greets, it's only been a few months but its so good to see them.
“Hey, Piccolina” Papi greets, all smiles. He puts his hand on Skeletor’s nose to push away his head as the borse goes to bite him “Need some help with the kiddo?”
“Sure” she turns to the kids “Draco these are my dads, my Papis gonna help you down okay?”
“Kay” Draco is too busy looking all around now that his focus isn't on his sibling or the race, it's a lot to take in
Papi helps Draco down out of the saddle, bracing his leg so he can swing the other one over and then helping lower him. Katie follows the kid down and sheds her helmet as she goes, mostly because Skeletor looks to be in chomp mode now that they're no longer ready to race and Katie would like to keep people in one piece.
Dad ignores the danger of the flesh-eating demon to pull Katie into a tight hug the second he's able, she can only hug back one armed to keep control of her steed but neither of them minds. He smells like herbs and antiseptic and sun-cooked wood and shes so happy to see him, relaxing into his safe hold
“Missed you bug,” he tells her, smacking a loud kiss into her gross sweaty helmet hair “Glad you got to come early”
“Me too” she tells him, then goes to give Papi a hug as well. Skeletor nearly gets ahold of Papi’s ponytail for the ninetieth time so he gets sent back to Ah-Pa’s stables, she will call Janet later and ask her to tell the handlers to give him a treat for being a good boy
“So which one of you is the Ghost Royalty?” Draco asks, squinting at them both like the ghosts might become suddenly visible if he looks hard enough
“It's me” Dad says without missing a beat, Papi elbows him in the ribs “Ow, hey! Violence against the heir of hell here, an affront to this noble house!”
Dad is lucky he doesn't break out into hives as it's not technically a lie, he does have an underworld title after marrying Papi. It's something stupid like ‘Prince Consort’ or whatever, he only uses it to pull people's legs without having to take a Benadryl.
Papi digs his elbow in good-naturedly “Shut up you big dork” he laughs before turning to the kid “That would be me, Nico di Solace. The other one is Will”
Papi gives Draco his hand to shake, Draco looks a little star eyed as he takes it and then Dad’s offered hand
“We've heard a little bit of your adventure from Katie,” Dad tells him “Come and see me in the Infirmary once Conner gets you sorted I wanna double-check your levels”
“Are you disputing my medical work” Katie accuses, hand on her chest in mock offense “Saying I do a shoddy job? You trained me yourself and then can't trust your own pupal, for shame”
“We have better facilities” Dad all but whines, Katie blows a very mature raspberry at him making Papi hide a laugh. But in hiding his laugh it makes Papi notest what Katies wearing
“Is that my shirt?” he asks, pointing to the Ramones shirt that she totally did not steal from him
“No” she says as straight faced as she can, unfortunately her lie makes Dad sneeze the fucking snitch. This is why she never learned to lie properly she blames her Dad and his dumb allergies
Papi narrows his eyes at her “Katie-“
“WOW Draco we should go get you situated with Conner!” She says louder than necessary, taking the kid by the shoulders and steering him towards the cabins “Bye dads see you at dinner!”
“I know where you sleep!” Papi calls after them
“Uh huh sure yeah, bye forever!” She hurries the kid a little faster
“Your dads are nice” Draco tells her as hes rushed along
“Yeah,” she agrees with a smile “They're pretty awesome”

Thess vs Local Council Elections
It was local council elections yesterday. Not for me - my local council isn’t having elections at the moment, same as basically all of Lodnon - but for a lot of other places.
(That’s a thing - when my time does come for general election stuff, I need to put in for a postal vote. I can’t seem myself hobbling up and down the hill to wait in a queue, dig out my photo ID - because this is actually happening now - and then stand at one of those tiny little booths voting.)
Anyway. There is good news, and there is bad news.
Good news: the Tories have lost over 800 seats. I say ‘over’ because it was 800 and when I went to double-check it was 813, and then went to look ant it was 835. I don’t think they’re going to make any gains that will get them to less than 800 at this point.
The bad news: Labour picked up over 500.
Why is that bad, you ask? When we mostly just want the Tories out? Yeah, we do. Which is exactly why we don’t necessarily want Labour in, either.
I’m sorry, but they really are just the Tories with a different coloured tie at this point. Labour’s policies are in lockstep with Tory policies, and they’re not going to magically stop behaving like Tories if they win. Local government is probably okay. National government is probably something else again. Starmer is just a different type of out-of-touch asshole than Sunak is.
So, yeah, glad the Tories are taking a kicking (it’s shit like this that made Theresa May resign, so lightning may strike twice, we never know. Though ... given everything, not sure we want the reputation for the country that had four Prime Ministers in a single 12-month period), but not happy Labour are coming out on top here. Though Lib Dem and the Greens are making hay, by their own standards. So maybe that’ll show that those two parties aren’t a wasted vote after all. Stranger things have happened.
Gods, tomorrow’s the fucking coronation; as if I didn’t have enough to roll my eyes at about this country. But the forecast is for rain basically all day tomorrow, so that’s something. Shame the ceremony itself is indoors, though.

Consequences of Corporate Spying
Female’s Point of View - Conditioning - Technology
Tumblr media
“Welcome home!” I said as I posed in my new maid outfit. “Come in, come in! I’m dying to know if this get up qualifies as a, and I quote, sexy maid costume.” He walked in and hooked his keys on their usual hook as he took in my outfit. He didn’t say a word and I couldn’t tell what was going through his mind. Hopefully, I didn’t fuck up my given task and disappoint him with my choice. “It does.” he said with a smile. “Although, I’m surprised you didn’t go for a more lingerie inspired one instead of the shiny latex.” “To be honest, I almost did.” I said, trying to hide my relief. “But the requirements were ‘costume’ and not ‘bedroom wear’. So... I figured this was more appropriate.” He blinked twice in obvious puzzlement before he chuckled. “I guess that’s true, but regardless... It looks stunning on you. ” he said as he walked up to me. “Then again, anything you decide to wear looks stunning on you.” His proximity made my heart skip a beat. “I won’t argue there.” I said as I felt a lovely clench down between my legs. “But... Where I might argue with you is the choice of said outfit. I know you are still mad about the night we met and all... But don’t you think a sexy maid uniform is pushing my righteous humiliation a bit far? It’s SO cliché and pretty degrading to wear you know.” He smiled. “No, I don’t think it’s pushing things too far.” he said as he caressed my cheek. “You completely humiliated me. You got me drunk... Seduced me so I would bring you home and fuck you... I thought I had met the perfect woman. Brilliant and beautiful all in one exquisite package. I figured you came onto me for me, but that’s not why at all, now was it?” I blushed as I thought back to that fateful night. “No...” I said, looking to the ground. “Try to imagine how I felt when I woke up alone in bed.” he said as he lifted my chin so he could look at me.“ Heck.. If it had been only that, I would have let it slide as a fun night with a beautiful woman. But it wasn’t. Was it?” “No...” I said as I looked away from his gaze. “Can you even imagine how much money we would have lost if I hadn’t decided to double check my home security cameras?” he said. “Can you even fathom the depths of my humiliation if word got out that all that research had been stolen because I had been seduced by a pretty face?” “I can ball park it in my head...” I said as I forced myself to look back into his eyes. “Probably millions...” “If not more... “ he said. “What you did almost tanked my whole career, not to mention my professional reputation. If I hadn’t managed to contact you in time with proof of your theft, the company itself would have been bankrupted.” “I know...” I said as I fought the raging despair of his obvious disappointment. “But... You did catch me and none of that happened.” “I really SHOULD have gone to the police...” he said as he released my chin. I smiled. “But you didn’t.” I said as I placed my hand on his chest. “And I’m forever grateful to you for that. I’m grateful that you decided to take justice into your own hands and offer me a path to redemption that avoids jail!” “Corporate espionage charges can be tricky.” he said. “Your current employer would have probably been able to get you a deal so you don’t spend a lifetime in jail, but your career as a corporate spy would have been over for sure.” “That would have been a shame...” I said with a smile. “Because I clearly excel at it!” He chuckled and wrapped his arms around my waist. “I wouldn’t say excel...” he said. “You DID get caught after all.” “I did.” I said, biting my lower lip. “But then again, I managed to get caught by a man that was ready to offer me a different form of penance so I could continue to do what I’m good at.” “Caught or not, it’s true that your skills are impressive.” he said. “I’m glad you decided to accept my offer because if I had turned you in, our companies would have surely done everything to keep the scandal quiet, but word always gets out when that much money is involved. So for me, turning you in would have been almost as bad as letting you get away. And knowing the higher ups, I would have been pushed out pretty quick.” “That’s very true...” I said. “Loyalty is so hard to come by in our corporate world.” “If loyalty were more commonplace, your job as a spy would be a lot more difficult!” he said. “But it would be nice if everyone in our company could be as loyal as you are to me.“ “They can be.” I said as I lifted my other arm and twirled my feather duster over my head. “Case in point!” He chuckled.

Through Fire and Ice Chapter 11
(Technoblade x Reader)
Chapter 11
< Prev Chapter | Next Chapter >
~~~~~~
“Ugh…” You woke up with an over-powering headache. When your eyes opened you questioned where exactly you were…  This wasn’t Niki’s ceiling. Looking around you sigh… Right… You had a home now. Your stomach turned with nausea… Or was it hunger? This caused you to groan out. How did you even get here? You couldn’t even remember much of last night. Just small parts of the drinking game, as much fun as that was, your memory was now trashed. You weren’t sure you ever wanted to drink again after how you felt now. You knew that if someone offered you any sort of alcohol you would retch at the smell of it.
 The house had a draft to it so when you got up you took your blanket with you, wrapping it around your shoulders. You let out a groan at your headache. When your feet met with the cold ground, you shivered. Making your way to the door, you turned the doorknob. Out in your living room you focused in on Technoblade, who sat on your couch. When the door opened to reveal you, he looked over at you, as if he were a deer in the headlights.
“Mornin’.” You rubbed your eyes when they had gotten blurry. The springs of the couch sounded off throughout the room and his footsteps toward you caught your attention.
 “How are you feeling?” The look he gave you made you blush. You gave a half shrug unable to meet his lingering eyes.
 “Like shit if I’m being honest.” Your voice sounded scratchy, and you tried clearing your throat. Your eyes felt really heavy and irritated as if you had been crying. “This place is cold…” You wrapped yourself up tighter in your blanket.
 “I’ll build you a fireplace,” His words were hesitant, and you wondered why. He led you to his old spot on the couch, and he summoned a canteen in his hands. “You need to drink water.” He handed you his canteen and he headed into the kitchen. Sipping on the water, you appreciated how cool it was on your tongue.
 You felt yourself dozing off on this couch. You wondered why Techno was here. Did he stay the night just to make sure you were okay? You let a smile show on your lips as you laid your head down on the couch. The sounds of Techno’s activities in the kitchen calming you to sleep. Every now and then you would take a swig off of the canteen and go right back to resting your eyes. The cold still getting to you.
 Techno had come out to check on your resting form, seeing that you were still shivering, he laid his cloak over you once more. You very tiredly thanked him, and he knelt down so he could be face to face with you. He studied your features, and when you were out like a light, he brushed your hair out of your face. He wasn’t out of the woods yet; he didn’t know if you remembered last night. He didn’t want you to be embarrassed, and he certainly didn’t want to lose your friendship.
 He stood, upon hearing the food in the kitchen sizzle. He would talk it over with you later… Whatever you wanted to do he would live with it.
 Sometime later, a knock rang out in the living room and Techno cringed when he heard it. His eyes scanned over your sleeping form, relieved when you hadn’t woken up from the sound. Letting out a relieved sigh, he hastily made his way to the door. He expected it to be Dream, but when he opened it to reveal Niki, he let out a sigh in relief.
 “Oh, thank goodness.” Niki put her hand on her chest as she smiled at him, looking relieved. Techno stepped outside closing the door behind him so he wouldn’t wake you up with their chatter. “I’m glad this is the right house.” She lets her eyes wander over the porch. “I just wanted to check in on you two.”
 “Things are alright here.” Techno shrugged leaning against the railing of the porch. “She’s sleeping off a hangover right now.”
 “Well… What about you Techno. How are you feeling?” Niki looked at him with her curious blue eyes, cocking her head. “You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to but…” Techno put a hand up to stop her. His eyes glued to the dark wood door.
 “I’m alright, everything’s alright…” Techno started. “But last night she kissed me when I brought her home.” He could see the excitement well up in her, but he could only sigh as he ran his hand through his hair.
 “What did you do?” Niki asked as she clasped her fingers behind her back.
 “I ran away, because she was drunk.” He grumbled, watching as Niki processed his words.
 “You did the right thing Techno.” She gave him a reassuring smile. He nodded pushing himself off of the railing. His eyes scan over Niki, one of the only few people to actually treat him as an equal. He cleared his throat.
 “Did you need help today?” He would take over your route if need be. “I’ll step in for her, seeing that she’s not in the best shape.”
 “I’ve got the route for today.” She waved him off. “But if you would help me out in getting my order of supplies from the farm today, I would really appreciate it.”
 ~~
 You had woken up to the smell of food, your stomach twisted and turned. Hearing voices from behind the front door. You got up to use the bathroom, taking a moment to look at yourself in the mirror and wincing at your ragged appearance. When you were done in the bathroom you looked around for Techno, finding no sign of him in the house. The food still crackled in your smoker. Your eyes slid over to the front door.
 You approached the door, putting your hand on the doorknob. You were about ready to turn the knob when you heard the word ‘drunk’ escape Techno’s lips. Niki told him he did the right thing, but… What were they talking about? Your head pounded and you weren’t sure you had the mental capacity to think about it right now. You opened the door after Niki asked him to get supplies for her shop.
 “Good morning!” Niki smiled at you as she brushed her hair out of her face. “Last night was so fun!”
 “I really wish I could remember it.” You chuckled, pulling Techno’s cloak tighter around your shoulders. You had traded your blanket for Techno’s cloak when you walked around. Techno couldn’t help but notice the way it looked on your frame. The red complemented your features. He felt relief from your words, he visibly relaxed, but at some point, he knew he would have to talk to you about it.
 “It’s a shame, really.” Niki clicked her tongue. “Techno danced with you, I have never seen Techno dance,” The hybrid shot her a look, begging Niki not to go on. She gave him a taunting look back. It was a playful look, but it didn’t help the anxiety Techno felt about this whole situation.
 “Then I’ll just have to get him to dance with me again.” You half shrugged, a smile pulling at your lips. You didn’t know the weight of your words, but to Techno, that’s all he wanted. To hold you close, sway you to the beat of the music. To hear the laughter spill from your lips like it did last night. He stood there still as a rock, barely listening to the chatter between you and Niki. Some semblances of hope for the future, alight in his eyes.
“I have to go but I’ll see you later Techno?” Niki looked up at him expectantly and he nodded. “Just go talk to Sam, he should have it ready to go.” She gave you a wave as she stepped off your porch and started heading back toward her bakery. You looked up at Techno curiously.
 “Does she need help?” You asked, guilt churning in your stomach, you really didn’t want to let Niki down. She had shown you a lot of kindness. She was a great friend. Techno nodded as he led you back into the house.
 “I’m going to grab a shipment from the farm for her.” You walked back to your place on the couch, taking another swig off of the canteen. “If you’re feeling better you could come with me…” You hadn’t picked up on the nervousness in his voice because you were more fixated on your headache.
 “Mm hmm,” You pressed your palm against your forehead to relieve some of the throbbing pain. He looked back toward you, noticing your state. When he tended to the food in the smoker, he doubled back, and he knelt down as his eyes worriedly bore into yours.
 “Headache that bad?” He asked, when you nodded, he let out a sound of disapproval. “You still have that golden apple?” You slightly nodded, summoning forth the apple from your inventory. “Eat that apple and it should help quite a lot.”
 Your eyes scan over the shiny apple in your hand. When would you ever need to use this apple? Maybe for when you and Techno go through the nether? You hesitated, opting to save the apple for later. Techno gave you a nod, standing once more, heading back to the kitchen. It wasn’t too long before he was serving you a plate, you had dozed off on the couch once again. He woke you, nudging your foot with his.
 “Don’t feel like you need to eat this, if your body can’t handle it, don’t push it.” He handed you the plate. Steak and eggs were laid out on the plate along with a watermelon slice. You smiled at him and thanked him. You weren’t sure how much of this you were going to be able to eat, but you were very appreciative of him. The two of you shared a nice morning filled with a good breakfast and good conversation.
 --
 You weren’t able to eat too much, but what you did eat helped you. Your head didn’t throb as much, and you weren’t too nauseous after that, but you still had your moments. The two of you found yourselves mid-day on your way to the farms. On your way there, Techno pulled you in the cart.
 “You realize, you can’t ride in there when we have Niki’s shipment right?” Techno said smirking when you gave him a mischievous smile from inside the cart. You winced when the cart hit a bump in the road, which jostled you around a bit. Your fingers tapped on the wood, as you retorted back.
 “Yeah, but that’s why I could just ride on your back. You’re the best pack mule.” You beamed at him, giggling at the unamused expression to cross his face when he looked back at you. He wasn’t having any trouble carting you around and he quite enjoyed this, he enjoyed joking with you on things.
 “Wait that’s why I was going to take you mining with me…” Techno joked, “You’re supposed to be the pack mule.” Techno reveled in your laugh, as you leaned forward.
 “I’ll be the worst pack mule you’ll ever see Techno.” You rested your arms and chin over the front of the cart, so you could see past Techno. You looked around at all the businesses and other buildings that had been nothing a month ago.  Techno gave you an amused grunt, as he shook his head.
 The walk was short but during the process, you saw Phil flying through the cave overhead.  You marveled at the sight. People around you hooted at Phil when he passed them. He was really graceful flying through the air. Curiously, you watched him as he disappeared from your view. Techno chuckled at your reaction.
 “That reminds me…” Techno started. “Phil wanted to see if you were okay with dinner and family game night tonight after we deal with this. If you’re feeling okay.” Techno looked down at your expression gauging your reaction. Shrugging your shoulders, you nodded, thankful that you felt immensely better now.
 “I think it’ll be okay; I still have a headache but I’m hoping that will go away soon…” You trailed off as you saw a group of girls staring at the two of you. They were passing by, as if they were on their way to the residential district. One of them scrunched up their face, whispering to the other ones. Techno followed your gaze, seeming to walk faster with the cart, he quietly moved his body in front of you obscuring their view of you.
 They watched the two of you as you passed. Feeling the heat rise up to your cheeks, you bit your lip, feeling embarrassed. You started wondering if they were laughing at your appearance… Having not putting much thought into how you looked for the day, you didn’t care, you weren’t feeling well… But now you felt like you should have cared… They erupted into laughter, which made Techno’s hold on the cart tighten, his knuckles turned white as he grasped the handle.
 “What was that about?” You questioned, he looked down at you moving back to his original position. His hair shielded his face from your view.
 “I don’t think that they like hybrids.” He said simply. You hadn’t considered that. You never saw him as a hybrid, you hadn’t ever come into contact with a hybrid before him, but no one told you to stay away from them. Knowing that there was more he wasn’t telling you, your eyes furrowed up at him.
 “Do you get treated like that often?” Your heart sunk when he nodded. A sigh escaped his lips, as his fingers twitch anxiously.
 “I don’t think I get treated like that because I am a hybrid, maybe it has something to do with it… But I think it’s because of some of the things I have done in the past.” He cleared his throat and you decided not to question him further because he seemed uncomfortable. “We’re almost there.” He changed the subject, and you hoped that you would be able to help him vent about his past even for just a little bit.
 --
The farm was incredibly impressive, the progress that was made from the first day was phenomenal. Huge fields with crops laid out on different floors in this massive hole in the wall, they were all automated thanks to Sam. Right next to the farm, was the tree farm coupled together with Tubbo’s bee farm, all of the bees had access to the crops, furthering their growth. The frontage of the place was made of glass, so it would be hard to steal from the crops without someone seeing.
 Grabbing Niki’s order had gone well, Tubbo and Tommy had kept you busy at Tubbo’s bee farm, and Techno had talked to Sam. Sam ended up requesting for more redstone that Techno had already mined up, in return for emeralds. Who was Techno to deny such an easy request, especially when there were emeralds involved? Sam wanted to get more farms into motion, but he needed the redstone to do it.
 Techno watched as the two boys introduced you to another person. Techno had seen him around, but he had never really talked to him. Another hybrid, like himself, he watched you laughing at one of his jokes. Techno and Sam made their way over to the four of you and Techno planted himself behind you, his eyes scanning over the goopy stranger.
 “Techno, I’d like to introduce you to our person working on the slime farm, his name is Charlie.” Sam clapped a hand down on Charlie’s shoulder. Immediately regretting his choice, he draws his slime covered hand back and tries shaking the goop off, only to wipe it on Tommy’s shirt when the slime won’t come off so easily, making the younger boy start to yell and curse at Sam. Techno watched you giggle at the entire thing, his heart warming at the sound of your laugh.
 “Friends call me Slime!” He held an oozing hand out toward Techno to shake his hand. Techno chuckled and shook Charlie’s hand. The slime stuck to his hand; strings of slime lingered between his fingers. He wasn’t bothered by it. In fact, this was nothing compared to the carnage of war that had clung to him once upon a time.
 “Techno,” He smirked pulling his hand away, when you and Slime had started talking again, Techno walked over to Tommy who was still yelling at Sam over his now slime covered shirt. This time Tommy saw Techno coming over.
 “Like hell am I letting you do what Sam did… BITCH!” Tommy directed at Techno, before he ran off, with Tubbo trailing behind him. Techno and Sam shared a look and Sam helped Techno wash the slime off. His eyes would drift over to you and Slime every once and a while, he grimaced at the puns Slime would say. He liked watching you make friends though, he liked watching you live your life to the fullest. From what you told him, you didn’t do that before you met him, you even seemed to have some trauma from your old life, Techno wanted to take you from all that.
 When the two of you left, you helped Techno pull the cart, not that he needed the help. But you felt bad just walking next to him, not doing anything. The two of you walked in comfortable silence the rest of the way back to Niki’s. You helped unload the cart, Techno taking the brunt of all the work. You just sat there loading things into his arms so he could take it in to Niki who would put everything in place. You wanted to do more, but he wouldn’t let you, seeing as you weren’t fully recovered from last night.
 Techno did end up packing you on his back when the two of you were on your way to Phil’s house. Mostly because you mentioned it again jokingly, but this time he didn’t joke. So… Here you were… On this Piglin hybrid’s back, your arms wrapped around his shoulders. His arms wrapped around your thighs to keep you on his back. You pressed your cheek against his back, listening to him breathe. He was so big compared to you. His scent calmed you to the point of where your eyes fluttered closed. You felt entirely safe with him. He was your best friend, but deep down you knew you wanted more. Even if he didn’t want you like everyone else who had abandoned you in your life. Being friends would be enough.
 You were lost in your thoughts when you felt him stop. Opening your eyes, you were met with the familiar sight of Phil’s door. You remembered the last time you were here. You were scared to meet Phil, as if he would stab you again. But when you actually got to talking with him, he gave off a vibe, that could only be described as fatherly. He was a good guy who you caught in a bad moment.
 Techno didn’t bother knocking this time, he just opened the door, letting the two of you inside. This was his temporary home, even if it was just a couch. He set you down on the floor gently, his eyes scanning over your sleepy face, to make sure you were okay.
 “I’m home Kristin,” Techno sounded off toward the kitchen. The clink of dishes could be heard before she side stepped to the opening of the kitchen. Her eyes landing on you. She gave Techno a smirk, before waving.
 “Hey guys, make yourselves comfy,” Kristin enthusiastically said as she returned to doing the dishes. “Phil and the kids will be here shortly,” The whole house smelled of good food. Techno sat you down on the couch, allowing you to take advantage of the down time, he wrapped his cloak around you once more, and let you sleep. He took this time to go help Kristin, chatting about life with her. She was just as special to him as Phil was.
 It wasn’t long before everyone had come bustling in, Tommy immediately going to change his shirt. Ranboo even came in with his dragon egg strapped to his chest as if it were a small child. Tommy, Tubbo, Phil, Wilbur, along with Niki, when her job was done, had come in. The whole gang had shown up and Techno enjoyed how easily you fell in line with all of them. This group was an amazing one, and it had only gotten better with you in it.
 There were too many people to sit at the dining room table, so it was decided that everyone would eat in the living room. Tommy flicked his carrots at Tubbo during the meal, letting out a boisterous laugh. Phil questioned Ranboo on his fashion choices considering the egg. Niki and Wilbur sat quietly in their corner quietly talking. You didn’t exactly like that she stayed back when there was a larger group, and you were happy that Wilbur plopped himself down next to her. Kristen played a good hostess, making sure everyone was happy.
 When the games rolled around, nothing but laughter… and competition could be heard, Wilbur and Tommy were at odds on many of the games, showing just how competitive they were. But in the end, they were smiling, and everything was right in the world… Well at least since they came down here. Techno would help you if you didn’t know how to play any of the games. Niki had found that her game was a card game called B.S. and for some reason, Ranboo was really good at poker.
 All in all, the night was a success… And it was another night that Techno would keep close to his heart. He left his worries at the door; he would come back for them at another time.
Andrius, Venti, and Dvalin: General HCs [+ unhinged Venti]
Tumblr media
Oh no, not strange at all! I love seeing the art people have done on human Dvalin and Andrius. I’m not entirely sure if you wanted a Venti x Dvalin x Andrius pairing but I’m going to assume so. But just in case, I added a few points of all 4 of your hanging out. How my desk is positioned with my window, the sun is shining directly into my eyes so I have to type in this weird position unless I want my eyeballs to melt.
Also, if any of this is wrong just look away. This took forever because holy crap there is so much lore on these 3. Not sure what exactly you had in mind so I made some general/friendship HCs
Alright, today’s appreciations post is for maagdalen. Super lovely person with some lovely emotes. Oh and your english is really good btw^^ and ty for chatting with me 💕💕💕
Andrius, Venti, and Dvalin: General HCs
Tumblr media
Andrius
Andrius, also known as Lupus Boreas, was tasked with protecting the nation of Mondstadt under the request of Barbatos. He had a noble soul and mainly stays in the area of Wolvendom. He was strict, to the point, and never really partakes in whatever “foolish” activities Venti or Dvain get themselves into. But it’s all just a front because as soon as one of them get’s hurt or is in danger, his fangs and teeth are out. Even if it’s a cute hydro slime. Then he’ll take them by the scruff of their neck back to Wolvendom to get their wounds checked. On Venti it works, but with Dvalin’s dragon form. It’s amusing to see a pouting dragon getting dragged off by a wolf that wasn’t even double his size.
Not many Mondstadt citizen’s know but Andrius isn’t actually a wolf. He chooses to take the form of a wolf and should any of the wolves in Wolvendom be threaten, that’s the form he will appear in. But in truth, it was because Venti suggested it. If he was going to stay in Wolvendom and protect wolves then it made sense that his form would be the big bad wolf. Really Andrius just believes that Venti has a secret vendetta against cats and Andrius wouldn’t talk to Venti if he suggested that he take the form a dog.
There is a bit of discourse between Andrius and Venti due to Venti’s human-like appearance since Andrius views human society as a disappointment. Only accepting abandoned infants that have no where to go. But he does respect Barbatos and helped in his efforts to rebuild Mondstadt and protect it as one of the Four Winds.
While he doesn’t completely enjoy Venti’s extravagant personality he’s glad that Barbatos adopted the name and is living his life in freedom. Despite being the anemo archon, he chooses to live as Venti. Having fun in taverns and doing what he loves.
Tumblr media
Venti
Venti always brings stories and sings for the two whenever he decides that it’s been too long since he’s seen his friends. He usually brings a bottle of wine even if he’s the only one that ever drinks - which is probably why he brings wine - which leads to Andrius scolding Venti to try and act civilized when he gets drunk and saying “No Dvalin, you cannot have some. The last time we let you drink you cried so much that Springvale still has a waterfall.”
It’s amusing to hear that after the war, the biggest problem Venti has right now is getting constantly ID checked. Dvalin takes this quite literally, since he still isn’t fully aware of taverns rules and regulations, that it takes both Venti and Andrius to hold him down before another Stormterror incident happens.
Venti has always been bold, never afraid to say anything, which was a trait that Dvalin and Andrius liked about the anemo archon. It was what made him the archon of freedom but sometimes Venti is a bit too bold and pretends to play fetch with Andrius wolf form. He is not amused. When he tries it with Dvalin, Dvalin will participate but he get’s confused and ends up just sitting beside Venti when the archon throws the stick. Which causes Venti to make a walk of shame to get the stick back.
When Venti acts as the Wind Archon it’s always a bit of whiplash when he talks in his philosophical state that it reminds Dvalin and Andrius that despite his childlike appearance and attitude, he was still the anemo archon. But it get quickly covered up when he says it’s time to switch back to Venti time.
It’s hard for them all to meet up in the present day. Dvalin stays in his domain while Andrius stays in Wolvendorm, all alone in their own domain. Venti prefers lively places than those quiet and solitude areas so he’s either in the City of Freedom or under the Windrise tree. But on occasions where he feels lonely he’ll swing by Dvalin’s lair and use the winds to carry their conversation to Andrius. Just so he isn’t left out.
If anyone asks where the ballads that Venti sings that are about a strict wolf and a nervous dragon, he’ll just say it was a passing tune he made up.
Tumblr media
Dvalin
Dvalin, same as Andrius, lost his faith in humanity and the city of Mondstadt. He was released as his role as one of the four winds but continued to remain in Mondstadt. Similarly to Andrius he is distrustful around humans after being betrayed by them, chose to avoids human contact but he tries to adopt a more friendly side when Venti visits him.
Dvalin cares about Venti more and isn’t as standoffish in showing that he appreciates Venti compared to Andrius. Venti explained to him and showed him what freedom truly was he felt connected with someone for the first time. He did want to be understood and loved by the humans for who he was and what he wanted to protect. But that’s still a long road ahead.
He’s a curious but clumsy dragon. He’s pure of heart and steadfast in his goals which Venti is full-heartily cheering him on while Andrius disagrees but allows Dvalin to continue on this own path. Even if Andrius is on the other side of Mondstadt, he still tries to keep an eye out for Dvalin should the Abyss Order ever try and take his friend under their control.
However, due to how almost naïve the dragon is, he get’s into rather...interesting situations. While Andrius groans and Venti loses his absolute shit when Dvalin, still in his dragon form, lands and tries to observe the wolves. He only hides behind a thin tree that barely covers even 2% of his entire body and ends up scaring the wolves who run back to Andrius for safety. It takes a lot of consoling from Venti that the wolves didn’t like him, they were just scared and perhaps he should adopt a smaller form?
He’s still a bit sick from the aftermath of the Abyss Order and the poison of Durin so he can’t travel as far as he would like so Venti keeps him company. Telling him what the citizens of Mondstadt have been up to and playing music with his lyre.
---
I love writing Venti, he’s so much fun. :) I say this but I live for Venti who hides behind this happy persona but is actually unhinged or deluded. I have many thoughts on this but I didn’t want to break the pace of the fic (plus this is getting pretty long anyways). So feel free to skip the rest of this if that makes you uncomfortable. I’m just spit balling right now.
But nervous and shy dragon Dvalin plus mother hen Andrius is canon. You cannot convince me otherwise.
This week has just turned into “what will we awaken today?” In other news, Lisa and Diluc. But it might be a bit late since this took some time to finish. In extra news, solo leveling just updated. Oh and jjk is (hopefully) getting a new episode tmr^^
---
Tumblr media
Barbatos
Andrius and Dvalin trust Venti to fulfill his archon duties should anything ever happen to Mondstadt. The same way Venti trusts the Four Winds will protect Mondstadt should anything dangerous arise. With the carefree nature of Venti making a sudden appearance after Barbatos’s year long nap, they both got a bit too comfortable with this happy-go-lucky version of their archon.
That is until Venti brings a fourth person into their trio. Someone who knew how to play the lyre and wished to fly and see the birds. Andrius and Dvalin share a quick look of anxious tension and it’s confirmed when Venti makes a small slip of the tongue and calls you by a certain boy’s name. They aren’t sure what to do or if Venti was starting to regress back into Barbatos and what that could mean for this innocent traveler.
“Barbatos defeated the previous ruler and left the city to rest because he didn’t want to become the same tyrant. But an archon is still an archon with responsibilities. Those responsibilities can be warped to the point that they believe they are helping and guiding their followers, but are actually trapping them in their cage. He is an archon that believes in freedom so his cage is just a bit bigger. Big enough that you can’t see the walls. Be careful traveler.”
Venti goes to greet you the next day you see him but his words seem to fade away when he approach's you. He asks if you’ve been talking to Andrius lately. You nod and ask how he knows. He says that you just spell like wolfhooks and that you shouldn’t worry about anything.
The next day Andrius apologizes to you about his words and that he was mistaken. There was nothing to worry about and to trust Venti. You can see Dvalin a bit off to the side looking away nervously and a bit guilty.
Venti always makes sure that Andrius and Dvalin keep an eye on you, especially Dvalin when you’re in stormterror land. It was a pretty dangerous landscape to trek through. As for Andrius, he doesn’t want you to get hurt during your weekly practice fights. It wouldn’t do you any good if you got hurt and couldn’t explore this vast world with him.
HELP WANTED (PART 2)
WOLF QUIRK F!READER x HANTA SERO x EIJIRO KIRISHIMA WORD COUNT: 2,997 TW/CW: ABSENT PARENT MENTION (I know some people get really bothered about absent parents)
NOTES: No banner yet. And yes, I posted two parts in one day BECAUSE I’M LIVING FOR THIS. The next part I’ll include things from Kiri and Sero’s POV. I got tired toward the end of this one and wanted to finish and post it before going to sleep.
Tumblr media
Your alarm went off at 6:45 AM, allowing you more time to actually get ready and look like a decent human being.. well, sort of. You laid there for a moment, though, thinking that if this really went well, you could be leaving within the next week. You’d have to tell your father and though he’d be hurt, it wasn’t like you wouldn’t come back to visit. With a deep breath, you threw your legs off the side of the bed, holding your arms over your head to stretch. The stretch was so good that you almost fell back into your mattress and went back to sleep but you shook your head and rose to your feet, proceeding to your bathroom to shower.
After you took your shower from Hell, you walked out of your bathroom and back into your room, making your way to your closet to browse over the clothes you had. You realized quickly that you should probably do some upgrading to your wardrobe but you’ll worry about that another day. Your eyes scanned over everything and nothing really stood out to you so you pulled out your phone to check the weather, seeing that it was pretty cold out— roughly 23 degrees. Coffee definitely sounded luxurious right now and that thought alone made you check the time to see that it was now 7:15 AM. You took a little longer in the shower but the scorching water felt like Heaven to you.
You sighed, taking a long-sleeved, burgundy turtleneck half-shirt off of a hanger along with a pair of black high-waisted jeans. You tossed both articles of clothing onto the bed then went to your small dresser in the corner of your room to open the top drawer, pulling out a white colored bra and a matching pair of panties to go with it. You closed that drawer then opened the second drawer, getting some black socks that rose to just under your knee. Once you had everything, you dropped your towel then threw your undergarments on, along with your socks.
During your dressing, you received a text message from the Kiri person so you rushed over to it, hoping they weren’t cancelling the get together. Relief washed over you whenever you read the message.
FROM KIRI: Morning! Wanted to send you a text to tell you that me and my roommate are getting ready and should be at the coffee shop closer to 8:30 AM. We still on?
You replied rather quickly, it was almost creepy.. like you were waiting for a text.
TO KIRI: Good morning! Yes, of course! I’m getting ready right now as well.. I may be there earlier than you both since it’s right around the corner from me!
Once the message delivered, you threw your phone back onto your bed then put on your shirt and pants, which had a special made hole just for your tail, then walked over to your full body mirror hanging on the wall. “Not bad.. Not bad at all.” It was almost like you were hoping these were men that you were meeting. You scoffed at your thought, nah. You walked back to the bathroom to grab your hair brush, one for the hair on your head and another for the fur on your tail. It was weird in a way.. you had to color coordinate what you used for your tail because the fur wasn’t as soft as your actual hair was. Once you finished grooming yourself, you put on a pair of flat-bottom, over-the-knee, black boots.
Time, what was the— shit! Your damned tail, taking so much time to brush through. It was now 8:05 so you had to rush a little bit if you wanted to be extra early and order what you needed so you grabbed your black trench coat off your coat rack, grabbed your phone then your backpack that held your wallet and other necessities that you may need throughout the day and booked it out of your room and out of your front door. Your dad must have had to work this morning, considering his car wasn’t out front but nonetheless, you expected as much from a police officer.
NO TIME TO THINK, you thought so you turned in the direction of the coffee shop and started walking. Your walking turned into walking fast then into.. running, which doesn’t affect you much considering it’s part of who you are. You thankfully had a bottle of perfume with you, just in case you smelt like a wet dog and you sprayed a few pumps amongst your coat and a few on your neck. You took a minute to catch your breath right outside Camille’s front door then walked in.
“My, my.. Look who it is! If it isn’t my dear Y/N! I haven’t seen you in a few weeks, must be pulling extra shifts at the animal shelter, huh?” Camille practically rushed to you, bringing you into a hug. All you could do was smile and accept her embrace then return it. If you were being honest, you really needed the hug. “Hi, Camille! I’m sorry I haven’t been visiting like I normally do. I have picked up a few more shifts so I can save up for a place of my own.” You took a seat at your usual spot, right up close to where she made most things. There was a small little bar, in which, Camille practically saved your seat every morning when you started coming in. She was like a mom to you, which was nice in its own way considering yours wasn’t worth a shit.
Camille knew just about everything about your life so you felt awful knowing that you hadn’t been around in a few weeks but you had to do what you need to first. “You know, darling, whenever you stopped coming in, these two very handsome boys started coming in every morning. It was almost fate in a way. They kept me company while you were gone, but don’t get me wrong, I’m glad my favorite girl is back.” Boys? Was this elderly woman really trying to hint at hooking you up right now? All you could do was shake your head and laugh as she set your usual in front of you— hot hazelnut coffee, extra sweet. You lifted the glass mug to your lips, speaking from behind it, “Boys, huh? Camille, are you trying to set me up?” A smirk formed along your face as you took a sip of the coffee, humming softly in satisfaction, your ears falling back some. She always did make the best coffee, it never failed.
The older woman laughed then leaned back onto the counter opposite from the one you were at, “Now, you know I wouldn’t meddle into your love life, dear. All I’m saying is, they are complete gentleman.” She leaned forward on her elbow, whispering her next statement. “If I was year and years younger, I’d probably take both of them.” This made you snort then double over in laughter, “Camille! Shame on you!” All she did was shrug then before she could respond, her eyes lit up when she realized who was entering her shop. You noticed this look and raised an eyebrow, sipping your coffee. Camille realized your eyes were on her and she nodded toward the door, mouthing that’s them. You tried your best not to make it obvious but you turned your head just enough to the side to peer over your shoulder and boy, she was not kidding. However, these were definitely not boys.. they were pure men.
You quickly turned your head before they realized you were ogling them, your insides heating up. All you could think of was how the good Lord above took his sweet time crafting both of them. Your heightened sense of hearing allowed you to listen in on what was being said between both of the guys and Camille so you just barely turned your left ear to the side, lifting your coffee again to take another sip.
“My boys! Where have you been? Fighting crime as usual?” Camille greeted both with a big hug each before one of them answered her. “Yes ma’am, you know us. We have to make sure nothing happens to your wonderful coffee shop.” Your heart skipped a beat at that statement. Smooth. “Always such sweethearts, come. I want you to meet another regular of mine.” Please don’t, please don’t, plea— “Y/N?” Your face was probably as red as a beet at this point but you turn anyway with a smile that was semi-forced. You hadn’t much prepared well on talking to… very, very attractive men. “Boys, this is Y/N. Y/N, this is Eijiro and Hanta.” You shook each of their hands, your insides felt like they were being lit on fire at this point.
The man known as Kirishima smiled, “You can call me either Ei, Eiji or Kiri, though.” The fire was immediately put out by his statement. You were thanking all the Gods that you didn’t have your coffee in your hand because you would have dropped it. “D-Did you say Kiri?” You cleared your throat, scratching the back of your head nervously.
“Yeah, do you know me? I mean, I’m a pro-hero but do you know someone I know or—“ You cut him off, not meaning to, but you had to get it out. “No, I.. I inquired about the roommate ad you had put up. We texted this morning and last night?” Kirishima and Sero’s eyes widened and they looked at each other. Something tells you they really weren’t expecting the person they were meeting to be a woman, but you were in the same boat because you didn’t expect for the two people you were meeting to be two gorgeous piece of asses either.
Sero spoke this time as he looked back at you, “So you are looking to be our roommate?” You blushed a soft shade of pink, not really knowing how to properly answer that but you did anyway. “Well, I-I didn’t really plan on you guys being, well… guys.” Both men laughed then Kirishima sat next to you, Sero sitting next to him on the other side. Camille put their coffees in front of him, Sero’s was partnered with a bagel. She gave you a wink then rushed back to the kitchen, peering out the little window in the door. All you could do was shake your head with a grin. “If it makes you uncomfortable, you definitely don’t have to move in with us but we’d like to be your friend.”
You smiled at that but thought of the trouble you’d get yourself in just by being their friend. It was almost impossible not to yank both by their collars to the bathroom and— “Wolf quirk, eh?” Sero’s voice shook you out of your inappropriate thoughts. It’s almost like he knew where your head was spiraling to. “Y-Yeah. My dad is also part wolf as well.” You nodded, clearing your throat even though you really didn’t need to as there was nothing to clear.
“What about your mom?” Sero pressed, not knowing that talking about your mother was something you hated doing. You sighed quietly, eyes darting in front of you to a blank space on the white wall in front of you. Your ear fell back, tone filled with… hatred when you spoke, which you didn’t intend for, but your burning rage for her was not controllable. “Don’t know her. She left not too long after I was a baby. Just up and left in the middle of the night and nobody has seen her since.”
Kirishima looked at Sero, eyes saying way to go, idiot. He wanted to lighten the mood so he changed the subject quickly, “So, uh.. about your quirk..” You three sat there for what felt like hours just talking, having casual conversation. They asked about your quirk, showing high interest in every aspect of it. You reassured them that you didn’t shed hair so they didn’t need to worry about any of that. You didn’t realize that they were pro-heroes until they told you their hero names and you almost choked on your semi-hot coffee. You had heard of both but you never really are around the action to put a face to the name. They both do a lot of good work around your city, in which, you are thankful for with your father being on the police force. Without them, your dad would probably have been hurt or worse.
Your anger about your mother had withered away and you were really enjoying yourself with the two men next to you. Your tail was moving to-and-fro the entire time, meaning you were happy. It got silent at one point and that prompted to Sero clear his throat then bump his elbow into Kirishima’s own, basically trying to push on this conversation. Kirishima turned his body a little toward you, his tone was soft, “Um.. This roommate thing.. It’s obvious you aren’t a serial killer, unless you’re a really good actor. You don’t have to give us an answ—“ You held your finger up with a smile because it was clear he was about to start rambling on due to nerves and not wanting to overstep. “You don’t have to say anymore. I’m super down for being your roommate.” It seemed like relief washed over the both of them because they smiled at you. “Hell yeah, you can move your stuff in at any time. Just let us know when so we can help you.” Sero nodded in your direction and you nodded back with a smile.
Moving in.. with two insanely attractive men.. What could go wrong, right?
62. you set off the fire alarm and I have a test tomorrow, and I might strangle you
Sternclay, sfw, please!
Why do fire alarms only go off in March? The one time Stern set one off (he fell asleep studying and the dinner he was reheating started smoking) it was in that endless stretch of time where the snow is no longer festive but will keep falling for at least two more months.
More importantly, who is responsible for interrupting his carefully planned out six hours of sleep before his midterm at eight this morning?
He stands in the freezing cold with the building’s other three occupants; the single man who looks like he stars in lumberjack porn and the girlfriends who live on the ground floor.
“Sorry” The other man mumbles, “I was making doughnuts and the oil I was using got too hot without me noticing.”
Stern runs a hand through his hair and keeps his voice low, “Why were you cooking with hot oil at three in the morning?”
“When I can’t sleep, I bake.”
“Can I suggest a less flammable hobby in the future?”
“Hey man, it was an accident. And it’s not my fault they stuck the fire alarm too high up for me to get to it before it called the fire department.”
“Too high? You’re taller than I am and I can reach mine.”
“My ceilings are higher and it was tucked between the cabinets and the roof.”
“Oh yeah, ours is in a super-weird place too.” Aubrey, one of the ground-floor neighbors, pats the offenders arm, “it’s okay Barclay, it’s just a little smoke.”
“That may be the case for you three, but I have an exam that’s worth thirty percent of my grade in six hours and I need my goddamn sleep.”
“Yeesh, man, chill out. They’re already waving us back in.” Aubrey points to the door of the three story house.
“I timed everything to optimize my sleep schedule so it actually is a big deal.”
Barclay glowers at him, “Look, I said sorry. But maybe get used to the fact the world doesn’t run on your schedule, mr. control freak, and fucking get over it.”
Stern keeps a smile flat as he bites out, “go to hell” and heads upstairs to salvage what’s left of his schedule.
-----------------------------------------------------------
The crash from downstairs comes at nine p.m; he has a huge day at his internship tomorrow, but Stern doesn’t hear any sounds after it, and he is not about to let a neighbor die on his watch.
“Barclay? Are you okay?” He puts his ear to the door, the heater drowning out all ambient noise.
“Nope, not really, agh, fuck, the doors locked, lemme try to stand-”
“Stay put.” He runs upstairs, grabs his wallet, and uses his debit card to trick the lock, “Shit, what happened?”
Barclay is clutching his forehead, blood between his fingers, and his ankle is swelling. “I got really dizzy, caught my foot on the couch and then my forehead on the table on the way down. Ow, fuck, it better not be broken” he growls as Stern kneels to look at his foot, “I’ve got a shift in six hours.”
“I can’t tell. You should get to a hospital; if it’s injured and you try to work on it, you might have an even worse fall.”
“Fuck, I’m not even sure I can afford the ambulance, let alone the fucking E.R.”
He knows Dani and Aubrey are out, “Any family in town, or a boyfriend?”
“No, if there I woulda called them.” He snaps, then tries for a slow inhale, “sorry, it just, it hurts-”
“I can take you in my car, that’ll be one less worry.” Stern helps Barclay up, gets him to his sedan, then tells him to hold tight while he gets something for his head. He ends up grabbing the first clean fabris he finds, which is how Barclay ends up in the E.R while holding a “Roswell, NM” tank-top to his forehead.
“Sorry to ruin your, uh, souvenir?” He mumbles as they wait for the doctor.
“It’s for a good cause. Besides, I know how to get bloodstains out of fabric.”
“That...that makes you sound like a serial killer.”
“If I were a serial killer I would wear things that could stain.” Stern winces, “sorry, I read too many true crime books.”
“I just don’t have the stomach for them. I like fictional mysteries but real ones?” he shivers, “makes me think an axe murderer is gonna break into my place. I mean, you did it with a credit card.”
“If you’d had the chain thrown it might have been another story. “
“I’ll keep that in mind.” Barclay shifts in the plastic seat, “you, uh, you don’t have to hang around. Know you got a rigid schedule.”
Joseph runs a hand through his hair, “I’m sorry for being so annoyed last week when you set off the alarm. I’m not always great at handling changes.”
“To be fair, doughnuts probably weren’t the best stress baking choice.”
“Did they turn out?”
“Nah. I’ll have to try ‘em another time. Did, uh, did your test go okay?”
“Yes. I, um, I got a perfect score.”
Barclay laughs, the sound like warm honey, and Stern blushes at looking so deeply nerdy in front of someone with a smile like that.
“Mr. Cobb? We’re ready to see you.”
The bearded man gives an slightly awkward wave as he follows the nurse through the double doors. Stern returns the gesture, pulls up the chess app on his phone, and settles in to wait until his neighbor is done.
-------------------------------------
Barclay comes out his nap the scrchh of a brush on tile. His first thought is that he’s so late for work he’s unavoidably fucked. His second one is who the fuck is in his bathroom?
His ankle twinges, jogging his memory; he got back from the hospital at 11:30, no stitches needed on his head but bedrest required for his ankle. He’d been contemplating how to convince his manager to let him shift from the warehouse to somewhere he could sit. Joseph raised an eyebrow and asked for his phone while telling him to go get into bed. All Barclay overheard was a polite, steely voice mentioning the labor laws in Dane County and how it’d be a shame if someone were to arrange an OSHA spot check. The last thing he recalls before falling asleep was Joseph telling him he had the next day off.
That doesn’t explain the cleaning sounds, though.
“Oh, you’re up.” Joseph pokes his head in from the hall. His hair is coming loose from his usual slicked-down style and he’s in a V-neck and sweatpants instead of the suit Barclay sees him in most days, “I hope I didn’t wake you; since you gave me the spare key I thought I’d check on you when I got back from my internship and leave you some take-out from the Thai place around the corner--you said the green curry was your favorite--but then I thought I should wait until you got up to see if you needed anything, so I, um, I cleaned your tub while I waited for you to wake up.”
Barclay isn’t sure what part of that is the most baffling. Or the most touching.
“Why the tub?” He eases his legs over so he’s sitting on the edge of the bed.
“It’s satisfying. And I, um, I clean when I’m stressed.” He wipes his hands on the rag in his front pocket, “I was worried about you, and my internship was murder today. They’re mounting a case against one of the biggest employers in the state and everyone’s on edge.”
“Heh, kinda makes me glad I work at WalMart.” Barclay takes the crutch Joseph offers him and hobbles into the kitchen, “oh, uh, if you want to try some cake, there’s leftover cinnamon spice cake in the fridge.”
“I think I will, thank you.” He bends into the fridge and wow has his ass always been that nice, “can I grab you a drink from in here?”
“One of those pre-bottled Kahlua things in the door; have ‘em for a friend but one sounds good right now.” He watches Joseph open it for him, setting it down before he pulls out Barclay’s chair for him. Normally, the kind of fussing and light ordering around Joseph has directed at him makes him bristle. This last day, it just made him feel safe and cared about.
He could get used to this.
----------------------
“Good lord, we’ve even got a flood warning.” Joseph sets down his phone as rain attempts to pummel the house to dust, “Some days I wish we lived closer to one of the lakes but this is not one of them. Should we check to see if Dani and Aubrey need any emergency supplies for if we have to shelter here? I always keep more than I need.”
“Nah, Dani’s got a strong self-sufficiency streak; got her a bucket emergency kit for Christmas last year.” Barclay pops the cork on the Pinot Grigio they got for dinner, “and I don’t think they forgot your semi-drunk promise that if they ever had to run from a flood they had full permission to break open your front door to be safe on the third floor.”
“I meant it, drunk or no.” Joseph takes down the plates and portions out the carbonara; he’s been trying to cook when he has time, both because he likes it and because it gives him and Barclay something to talk about. Not that they need the help.
Things changed after the trip to the E.R; Barclay would bring Joseph fresh cookies or pie. Joseph would offer Barclay rides when their schedules overlapped. Barclay introduced him to his favorite trivia night spot. Joseph took some of his cookies to a worker-owned bakery where a former co-student worked, which led to Barclay getting a new job.
Now they see each other almost every day, whether that’s watching movies on Barclay’s cramped couch or joining Dani and Aubrey for board game night.
He’s pleased with how the pasta turned out, even more so with the fact that when their legs bump together beneath the table, Barclay doesn’t pull away.
They’re on the couch, chatting about the recurring themes in ghost movies, when the storm starts in earnest. The sky is so dark it may as well be nine at night, the lighting and thunder performing a cacophonous two-man show across it. The closer the thunder gets, the more Barclay tenses.
“Everything okay?”
“Yeah” a thunderclap makes him jump, “I know it’s silly but I fucking hate thunderstorms, I have since I was a kid.” He chuckles, “my mom would always end up making a pillow fort for me to hide in.”
“We could do that now.” He offers, tapping his foot against Barclay’s own.
“Know this might be hard to believe, but I wasn’t always six-two.” The other man teases.
“Don’t count me out just yet. Wait here.”
It takes some precarity and most of his thumb-tacks, but soon he’s waving Barclay to come join him.
“Holy shit” Barclay laughs as he sees the bed and part of the floor in Joseph’s tiny bedroom are curtained in blankets, “do you ever half-ass stuff?”
“No one can ever prove I haven’t.”
“Uh huh.” Barclay climbs into the fort, “that’s Joseph speak for ‘no.”
Joseph plugs in his UFO lights and follows him in, “I’ve failed plenty of times.”
“Not on this. Man, this is gr-” A thunderclap makes him jump, nearly knocking one blanket down, “uh, maybe if I…” He lays on the bed, Joseph deciding it’s the least awkward option to join him in that position.
“You really didn’t have to do this.” The green of the lights add a charming tint to Barclay’s eyes.
“I wanted to.”
His friend looks away, keeps his gaze on his feet as he murmurs, “How come you’re always so nice to me?”
“Because we’re friends.”
“It’s, uh, it’s not because you want something from me?”
“Of course not. Barclay,” he touches the cooks arm, “anything you’re thinking is a favor with an ulterior motive....well, it isn’t. It’s something I did to look out for you.”
“What if I, uh, I didn’t think it was favor hunting and was, uh, a different word that started with “F’?”
This time, when the thunder sounds, Barclay nestles closer to him.
“Oh, Barclay” he drapes a protective arm over his waists, “I didn’t mean it to be. At least, most of the time. There were, um, sometimes when I was more flirtatious than I’d have been if it were anybody else.”
“Do you...want to flirt more?” Barclay mumbles into his shoulder.
Joseph tips Barclay’s chin with his hand, brings their lips together as lightning flashes through the window. When he pulls back, Barclay’s eyes are wide. He kisses him once more just to see if he can make them entirely pupil, then whispers, “I hope we can do more than just flirt.”
“Joseph” strong arms slip below and across him, “fuck, babe, if it’s not flooded tomorrow, promise you’ll let me take you out tomorrow?”
“I’d like nothing better, big guy. In the meantime..” he rolls so Barclay is atop him, “I have some thoughts on how to keep your mind off the storm.”
I return from the dead with a fic that isn't even for the Naruto fandom and I don't really have an explanation for myself.
Pairing: SamBucky Word count: 2317 Fandom: MCU Summary: Visiting Steve was always strange now that the guy was old and retired. Still, of all the things Sam expected out of today, witnessing a prime example of gay panic from the co-worker that's been mysteriously avoiding him was not one of them.
Follow the link or read it under the cut!
KO-FI and commission info under the header!
Honestly, the fact that Steve's house smelled like prunes was probably one of the funniest things that Sam had ever heard in his life. More than anything he would have loved to go back in time, to the days of reading about glorified heroes in history textbooks, and tell his fifteen year old self that Captain America, Steve Rogers, retired in a house that smelled like prunes. God, his best friend just had to throw himself in to being old the way he threw himself in to everything else.
"Is there a special reason for you visiting?" Steve's voice was more tremulous these days, less steady but no less warm. Just hearing him again after the shameful amount of weeks it had been since his last visit made Sam grin.
"Nah, just thought I'd pop in and see if you'd expired yet. Your birthday's coming up. Gonna be, what, three hundred? A thousand?"
Steve narrowed his eyes but there was fondness in them so it wasn't very scary even if he could probably still tackle Sam across the room if he wanted to. At this point it would hurt him too but he could do it. "You, young man, are-"
He looked chagrined at himself when Sam cut him off with a laugh.
"You shitting me? Did you really just call me young man? See if I ever let you live that down."
His friend grumbled but accepted the teasing as his due. That was just what he got for going back in time and doubling down on being so much older than his own best friends.
Since it had indeed been a little too long after they last saw each other there was quite a bit of catching up for them to do. Over cool glasses of sweet tea and a plate of cookies the two of them spent a pleasant couple of hours shooting the shit until Sam could almost forget the years that stretched between them now. It was jarring, sometimes, looking away from those clear blue eyes to realize all over again just how many wrinkles they were set in. Sometimes he hated it. Other times he could only smile to know that at least one of their ragtag bunch had found the peace they were looking for.
Eventually all that sweet tea went right to his bladder and Sam excused himself to use the bathroom. When he returned he took in the sight of his friend all snug under one of the blankets his late wife had knit and sighed, feeling maudlin suddenly for no good reason.
"I should probably get out of your hair," he said. "Let you get in your afternoon nap or whatever. No, stay there man, I'll clean up." His smile was easy as he snagged the dishes from their grazing and hauled it all over to the kitchen.
"You sure?" Steve's voice floated after him. "Nothing else you want to get off your chest?"
"Huh?"
Sam frowned at the cups he'd just placed in the sink, running back through his mind. They'd talked about pretty much everything he could think of.
"You didn't mention Buck once, you know. I thought the two of you were friends now."
"Ah. Yeah. So did I." The corners of his mouth twisted with a little bitterness, a little confusion. After everything they'd been through and the number of times Bucky had accepted his invitations down to Delacroix he'd thought they were well past the point of calling themselves friends. Maybe he himself felt something a little more than that but he knew better than to push.
That was probably why Bucky's sudden radio silence hurt so much though.
"Trouble in paradise?" Steve called from the other room and Sam snorted.
“Shit, I don’t know. One minute we’re fine and the next he just up and disappears on me again. I may or may not have checked a bunch of obituaries for your name just in case because I have no idea what I might have done to piss him off.” Sam pursed his lips. He’s already gone over all this with Sarah a half dozen times and in all the recounts he’d done of their last couple missions he still couldn’t find any particularly bad moment between him and his best friend. Unfortunately the sweet tea he was glaring at didn’t have any answers either so he snatched the pitcher up and moved to put it in the fridge.
“Have you tried, oh I don’t know, asking him what’s wrong?”
“You think I didn’t try that?”
Steve’s hum drifted down the hallway with a distinct note of sass. “Neither one of you is very famous for your communication.”
“Excuse you, I was a counselor. A certified veteran’s counselor. Communicating with people was literally my job until your overly buff ass came running around all ‘on your left’ and ‘everyone I know is trying to kill me’.” Sam huffed as he snapped the fridge closed. “I damn well tried to talk to him but he’s not answering my texts or my calls. Short of breaking in to his apartment I don’t really know what else you want me to do.”
Without any other excuses to keep him in the kitchen Sam heaved a sigh, knowing he couldn’t dawdle any longer. He could only get to the door by going though the living room so his choices were either run away out the back, which he would never ever hear the end of, or go back in to the living room and face Steve with his stupidly wise and knowing eyes. Seriously, let a guy live to almost two hundred and suddenly he thought he knew everything. Annoying was what it was.
He was only halfway down the hall when he heard the front door open. Sam very carefully swallowed down the jibe he’d just been about to deliver and hoped that meant what he thought it meant. Maybe Steve had finally gone vague after all and bailed in the middle of their conversation; he’d rather chase a crazy old coot down the street than talk about his feelings regarding one James Buchanan Barnes. Actually if he looked at it from the right angle then chasing an old coot down the street was pretty much his job description whenever he and his partner teamed up on missions. Sam was just glad they hadn’t been called in to one since this whole silent treatment had started because he wasn’t sure he wanted to know whether or not Bucky would still have his back even when the guy was mad at him over reasons unknown.
Two more steps and Sam froze in his tracks, eyes wide with disbelief. Bucky’s shoulders were hunched in to himself with something bridling on panic as he fit himself through the front door and kicked it shut behind himself, eyes wild and fixed on the ground between his feet, nervous energy pouring out of him in a way Sam hadn’t seen before. From his spot on the couch Steve watched his childhood friend let himself in with serene indifference.
“Didn’t know you’d be over today,” was all he said. Then he smiled benignly when Bucky let out a soft whine.
“Help,” Bucky pleaded. “I’m dying.”
Then Bucky slid down to his knees and face planted in the carpet, arms and legs splaying out wide. Steve hummed.
“You know,” he murmured, “no one ever believes me when I tell them you’re this dramatic.”
“Steve! I’m having a crisis!”
“I tell everyone you’re a drama queen and they just shake their heads at me.”
“This is important! You have to kill me, Steve. Or I’m gonna just- just-!” Bucky’s voice petered out with another extended whine muffled by the carpet that probably didn’t smell any better from that close up.
Crossing one leg over the other, Steve folded his hands in his lap with a great lack of concern for the ridiculous scene playing out before him. Sam remained frozen in the hallway, wondering if Bucky even realized he was there, but he got an answer to that almost faster than if he’d bothered to ask himself.
“What’s wrong, pal?”
“It’s Sam!” Bucky cried. His arms lifted up like wings to flail briefly before falling back to the floor in a boneless sprawl. “Please just crush my head or something. I can’t take this.”
“Ah, yes, I hear you’ve been avoiding him.”
Whatever kind of noise Bucky was trying to make, it came out sounding more like he was choking on carpet fumes. “Of course I’m avoiding him!”
“Now why on earth would you do that?”
“I want to stick my tongue in the gap between his teeth!” Bucky said, entirely unaware of the sparks that were suddenly running up Sam’s spine in the hallway. “Help me, Steve! I want to press my thumb in the little dimple on his back. He has a dimple on his back! Why!? Steve I want to hold his hand! What the fuck!”
Steve had both eyebrows up near his hairline and the most shit eating grin any human on the planet had ever worn when he turned his head to look at Sam. Frozen with his eyes on the figure currently panicking in to the floor, Sam paid him no attention. He was busy processing. After getting to know Bucky, inviting him to stay in Delacroix time and time again, the dramatics weren’t actually that much of a surprise. Obviously as they grew closer he’d gotten a number of glimpses in to who the real Bucky Barnes was under the grouchy veneer he presented to the world. Watching him starfish on the ground and whine wasn’t too far from what he’d already seen.
Hearing him say anything about his tongue in conjecture with Sam’s teeth, on the other hand, now that was a bit unexpected. More than a bit.
“I think Shuri called this ‘gay panic’ and honestly I’m in agreement,” Bucky went on mindlessly. “If I have to watch him go through one more workout and not grab his ass with both hands then I’m just going to rip both of them off. Who needs hands if I cannot grab Sam Wilson’s ass with them!?”
“You may be slightly exaggerating the situation, I feel,” Steve told him.
Bucky snorted. “I am not. I absolutely am not. Why is he so hot? And nice? I hate that. Except I don’t. Steve why is he so nice to me?”
“That might be a question you should ask him.”
“Oh yeah, sure, I’ve got lots of questions for him! Hey Sam, why are you nice to me? Hey Sam, can I lick your cheekbones? Hey Sam, how big is your cock?”
“Well. Not that I’ve ever thought to ask that myself but, alright. Go on, Sam, how big is it?”
Sam had just enough time to cross his arms over his chest and assume a very casual pose leaning against the wall beside him before Bucky’s head shot up off the carpet. If possible, his eyes were even more wild than before when he fixed them on Steve, full of the deepest betrayal. Then he very slowly dragged them sideways to see the man he’d just been panicking over. Sam gave him a very friendly smile.
“Depends on your frame of reference,” he admitted. “I’d say sizeable.”
“Nnnggggg.”
“Hi Buck.”
“Ggnnn.”
While Steve very poorly disguised a laugh behind one hand, Sam pushed off from the wall and sauntered further in to the living room. Bucky slammed his face back in to the carpet.
“Leave me here to die,” he pleaded in a very small voice. Sam tutted, reaching for the front door, only looking over his shoulder once he was halfway through it.
“Come on, Buck, can’t lick my cheekbones if you don’t get off the floor. It was a nice visit, Steve, but don’t be looking out your front curtains for a bit. I think I’ll let Bucky decide for himself what sizeable means.” He thanked god for the mercy of Steve’s house being situated out here so far from any other homes, surrounded on all sides by enough trees that you couldn’t see it from the road. A gorgeous little island of privacy. Sam was fairly sure he wasn’t the only one grateful for this, judging by the mad scrambling noises he could hear going on behind him.
Bucky’s voice garbled out something that sounded like ‘fuck you, thank you, bye forever’ and then Sam was listening to the slam of the front door barely a second before strong hands were wrapping themselves around his hips. He laughed even as Bucky’s face came in to view.
“Greatest assassin of several generations and you didn't notice my truck in the driveway?” he said.
“I may have been a bit distracted.” That was definitely a pout on Bucky’s lips.
“By being so hot for all of this”-Sam gestured vaguely down his own body-“that you literally ceased being able to function.”
He didn’t expect such easy agreement as the sheepish nod that followed his words. “Pretty much.”
Sam blinked slowly once, twice. For one long moment he considered teasing the man. Then he decided that their time was much better spent doing things they’d both obviously been wanting to do while assuming they would never get the chance.
“I was promised a tongue in my teeth. Are you gonna get to that any time soon or am I gonna sit here and pine some more for something I apparently could have had all along?”
Bucky keened piteously. Then he surged forward to follow through on his own promises and Sam really hoped that Steve had taken his words to heart about the curtains. The man was way too old to be seeing all the ways they were about to defile the side of this truck.
“We want you to get any information you can about the school itself. If you hear about any faults in the security system, any teachers being sick, anything like that, you are to report to me and only me, kitten. Don’t trust anyone else here with that information, okay?”
———
As you fought off your grogginess the next morning, you had hoped that everything was a dream. Although, when you finally opened your eyes and saw Katsuki’s room, you sighed softly, rolling over to look at the ceiling. The night before had actually happened. You really had been kidnapped by a crazy and dangerous villain, forced to help them get information about the people you hold dear, otherwise they’d all die. And the cherry on top, of course, was a text waiting for you on your phone when you looked at it.
Master: Morning, kitten. I took your phone while you were sitting all pretty and gagged with my belt. Don’t forget what we talked about last night. I’ll know if you try to tell someone, so don’t. Meet me later on your patrols, same place. I’ll be waiting.
You rolled your eyes, changing his name immediately. There was no way you’d ever call him that, nor would you allow him to think that he was your master. You got out of Bakugou’s bed, walking over to his desk where a note was sitting, waiting for you.
Hey Idiot,
You looked really tired so I didn’t bother waking you up. I’ll tell the teachers you’re not feeling well. Don’t stay out all night again, I won’t cover for you again, dumbass.
We need to talk later. Don’t make me worry about you like that, teddy bear.
-‘Suki
You smiled softly, reading over the note again. Even after everything, you knew that he cared about you. He even used the pet name. Though it’s rare now, it still makes your heart melt. You folded the letter, putting it in your pocket before heading to your room. Your uniform had gotten quite wrinkled the night before, but luckily you always kept a few just in case. You changed into a fresh outfit, checking the time so you knew which class to get to.
On your way to your class, you heard footsteps behind you. You kept walking until you heard your last name called. You stopped, looking behind you to see All Might walking up to you, a worried look on his face. You fully turned towards him, a weary smile on your face as you waited to see what he was gonna say.
“Y/L/N, I heard you weren’t feeling well. Are you okay?” He seemed so worried about you, which of course he was. He told you last year that you were one of the most promising students at the school and that he was excited to see you become a pro hero one day. You cherished that moment, even to this day. You nodded, hoping that was everything he wanted to say. Of course it wasn’t. “Well, I need to talk to you, come to the teachers lounge with me.”
Your heart dropped to your stomach as you nodded once again, following his footsteps. Maybe he had found out that you were with the League of Villains last night. Maybe somehow he knew that you were a mole and you were about to be arrested. You fully expected to see the principal accompanied by the police force when the door opened.
Luckily for you, when the door opened, there were just a few teachers inside. All Might lead you to the green couches, offering to make you some tea. You thanked him, fidgeting with your thumbs as he did so. You looked around the room, taking in the decorations as you were sure the next scenery that would surround you would be a cell. All Might sat across from you, setting down two cups of tea.
“Y/L/N, we got notice from your agency that you never reported back from patrols last night. What happened? Did you run into any trouble on your route?” He took a short sip from the steaming tea, keeping his eyes on you. You shifted slightly, grabbing your cup so you had just a little more time to come up with something believable. You had a good record with the teachers, so they’d probably buy whatever you were about to sell them. After your scolding and torturously long sip, you set the cup back down and crossed your ankles.
“I’m sorry for worrying you, All Might. I did run into a little trouble, actually, but nothing too terrible.” Be careful, you thought to yourself. You were very close to just spilling everything. You knew you probably should have, but the image of All Might lying bloody and dead in front of you suddenly shot into your mind. You cleared your throat and All Might suddenly had a stern look on his face. “There was a kid whose mother had let go of his hand. He just started crossing the street without looking, and there was traffic. I barely got to him before he was hit. I guess I was so shaken up that I just came back to the dorms and went to sleep.” He hummed, his sternness quickly melting into sympathy.
“Oh, I see. Well, I’m glad you and that child are okay. But you know if you want to be a pro, you can’t let things get to you that way. Remember what I told you when we first met? You have to seem brave-“
“Even if you’re terrified.” You both finished together, a smile spreading both of your lips. He stood slightly, reaching his hand to grasp yours. You held it, your grip becoming a little tighter than you had meant it to. He looked down at your hand, his eyes glazing over with what seemed like deep thought. You kept your eyes on him, feeling your brows furrowing in desperation. You wanted to tell him, you needed to feel like you could be safe. Your knuckles turned white, and you realized you were probably hurting him. You let go, standing quickly. “I’m sorry, All Might. I’ll let my agency know when I go back out there after school.” He nodded, sending you on your way. You got out of there as quickly as you could, almost running to your class.
———
“So glad you decided to follow my orders. Such a good girl for me, aren’t you, baby doll?” Dabi smiled smugly as you glared at him. How could he be so cocky? You rolled your eyes, keeping a few feet of distance between the two of you. He held his hand out to you, a warp gate appearing behind him. You took a deep breath, then took his hand. He kissed the back of your hand before pulling you into the warp gate, squeezing you against him. When you two appeared in the hideout, you escaped from his grasp and pushed him away.
“Don’t touch me, it’s completely unnecessary, Dabi!” You whined, making sure to keep the distance this time. He chuckled, shaking his head before walking over to the couch and falling onto his back. He spread his thighs apart, one leg over the top of the couch and the other hanging off as he put his arms under his head.
“Oh, kitten, we’re really gonna have to work on that attitude. I guess I’ll have to be the one to fix it for you.” He smirked, sending a cold chill down your spine. You crossed your arms, and his eyes traveled to your chest. You immediately uncrossed your arms, fighting back the urge to throw something at him. “What information did you get for your master today?”
“First, I got no information. You wanna know why, Dabi? Because I got chastised instead since you thought keeping me here past my check in time was a good idea. I was supposed to report back to my agency before I went home, so now I’m in trouble. Second, you’re no one's master, but you’re especially not mine!” Your voice had gotten higher in volume than you meant, and Dabi’s demeanor changed very quickly, making you nervous. He stood, walking over to you. You froze again, cursing yourself for being so weak. His fingers squeezed your face, making your lips pout, his thumb starting to run over your bottom lip.
“Careful, little mouse, you are about to piss me off if you don’t watch that tone. And trust me,” he leaned in so close that you could smell the faint scent of a cigarette on his breath, “you don’t want to push me to that point. I’ll make sure you forget everything except my name.” You felt your knees get weak, which just confused you. You decided to push your luck a little more, a deviant raise of your eyebrow giving him a warning.
“Little mouse? What happened to ‘kitten’? Have I been demoted? What a shame.” He chuckled darkly, grabbing your hip with his free hand. Next thing you knew, you were pressed against the wall, his strength not holding back at all.
“Quite the opposite, baby doll. With that little stunt you just pulled, I’ve decided that I want to become the cat instead.” He looked over you, drinking in your expression as realization set in. He’s now the cat, and you’re the mouse. You whimpered, his hold on you starting to hurt. He leaned his head in, his lips brushing over your ear. “It doesn’t matter how much you wanna fight me, little mouse. The chase will continue until I have you begging for me.”
“That’ll never happen. Especially if you keep holding me here until after dark. They’re gonna get suspicious and find out everything, and then you’ll be in jail, where you belong,” you spat. He hummed, the vibrations of his voice sending more chills through your body. Though, it seemed they had a different destination than your spinal cord.
“I’ll accommodate that, then. I’ll have you back on time. Just don’t abuse my kindness. I’ll find out if you’re double crossing me, I have ears all over the place. Get me any information regarding what we talked about, no matter if it’s just a sentence or a whole speech. Anything helps both of us.”
“You’re insane.” You spoke without thinking, and you closed your eyes, ready for any impact. Instead, his body retreated from yours, his warmth no longer there. You opened them, looking at him. His hands were suddenly in his pockets, his gaze falling towards the floor. You tilted your head slightly, wondering what just happened.
“It’s six, you need to go back, right?” You nodded, still confused by this side of him you were seeing. He held up a finger to you, ordering you to wait while he walked away. You leaned back against the wall, your hand going to your face where he had his hand. Before you could really process anything, he walked back in and the warp gate opened. He nodded towards it, urging you to leave. You didn’t need much convincing, so you headed towards it. When you were inches away, he grabbed your wrist, lookin right at you with those eyes. “Check in with me when you get back to UA. I want to know where you are, so I expect at least a text when you go anywhere. Be good, little mouse, I’ll find out if you aren’t and punishment from me is probably the last thing you want.” He kissed the back of your hand once again before softly pushing you through the gate.
———
When you did get back to the dorms, you saw that everyone had already eaten and gone their separate ways, except the few people in the living room area. You made some small talk, assuring everyone you were okay before heading to Katsuki’s room. He had welcomed you in, bowls of tonkotsu ramen waiting for the both of you to eat. A sense of relief washed over you as you walked in, immediately going for the food.
“So, you wanna tell me what you were doing last night, dumbass?” He asked between bites, making you sigh and put your bowl down. You should have known better, of course you wouldn’t be able to just relax. You looked over at him, deciding to just eat anyway. You didn’t want to talk about it with anyone, but especially not him. He always had a way of getting things out of you and you didn’t need that right now, not if it meant his life would be in immediate danger.
“‘Suki, can we please talk about this tomorrow? I’m really tired and I still have to walk across the dorms to get to my room.” You took a long drink of the broth, the warm liquid soothing your throat. He let out a short but angry breath, doing the same as you.
“Fine. But don’t think you can escape this conversation again. I mean it.” He gave you a stern look, and you just smiled at him. You stopped being intimidated by him during your relationship. You reached over, holding his cheek in your palm. He instinctively leaned into your touch, his anger melting away.
“Don’t worry so much about me, ‘Suki, I’ll be okay. We can talk about it tomorrow. Thanks for the food.” You stood, grabbing both of your bowls so you could take it to the kitchen and wash them. He stood, his soft hand running down your arm. You turned your head to look back at him and he sighed.
“I can’t not worry about you, dumbass. No matter what, you’re still my teddy bear.” He bit his lip, then got that stern face again. “Just don’t go repeating that to anyone, dumbass.” You turned around, pressing a kiss to his cheek before leaving his room.
As you laid your head down on your pillow, you started thinking about what happened at the hideout. You called Dabi insane and suddenly he just got quiet. Like you had hit a nerve. You pulled out your phone, texting him that you were at the dorms now. As much as you didn’t really want to keep in touch, you felt an obligation to. Though, when the text tone sounded off, your heart felt as though it skipped a beat.
Asshole: Good to know. Go to bed, little mouse, and don’t forget to dream about me.
You groaned, putting your phone on the nightstand beside your bed. You needed to stop thinking about him, he’s just a nuisance and you didn’t want to waste time thinking about him. Though, that’s the only thing you could do until you fell asleep.
Lifeguard
 “Iwaizumi, if I didn’t know any better I’d say you were flirting with me.” You joked lightly, testing the waters carefully........“I have been. For the past few months,” He admits, “You’re just now noticing?”
iwaizumi hajime x  gender neutral reader... (slightly implied female costume = cheerleader)
warnings: alcohol mention (drinking), kissing, college party
word count: 1817
extra big thank to my beta keekee, and those who suggested ideas
friend x oikawa is up here
Tumblr media
The music vibrated your body as you swayed back and forth with your friend, soft giggles erupting from both of you as you danced to the song playing. The room was hot, sweaty bodies brushing up against one another as they maneuvered their way to less crowded areas. You could feel the alcohol taking effect, removing prior worries you had about attending.
Parties always had people with less amounts of clothing on, but on Halloween? Clothes were few and far in between, mostly just covering the essential bits and from what you had seen earlier at points, some had forsaken any sort of top at all. You were no different, having agreed to dress up as a sexy cheerleader. You continued to sway for a moment to the music before your friend suddenly let out a squeal, grabbing your wrist as she dragged you across the room to where she had spotted someone.
“Oikawa! Iwaizumi!” Their names made you perk up then, looking forward to them as your friend embraced the taller brunette rattling on how she didn’t think he was serious when he said he was also going to go as a Playboy Bunny. Still looking at him, you couldn’t help but admit he put both yours, and your friend’s bunny costume to shame. The fishnets he wore accented his legs gorgeously.
However your focus didn’t remain on him for long, your eyes fluttering over to the other man who stood against the wall with arms crossed as if he was slightly uncomfortable being partially naked. If Oikawa looked great, then Iwaizumi was dressed as a god. His muscles on full display, with only a pair of red swim trunks on, and a toy whistle draped around his neck which only drew your eyes back down south towards his abs.
Upon closer investigation, his nose had a smudge of white across it, already rubbed off by sweat and who knows what else. The idea someone else may have been touching his face let you with a swirling pit in your stomach which you opted to ignore, lifting your cup to your lips seconds before Oikawa was scooping you into a hug also. “Y/N his voice was a sing-song, eyes blown wide in excitement. “You look so good!”
You giggled at his words, stepping out of his body to eye him up and down. “You’re one to talk Tooru, look at you.” You said with a soft gesture and he was beaming again, reaching out to grab Iwaizumi and pulling him over. “I had to pick out Iwa-chan’s outfit,” he admitted, “He didn’t even want to come, can you believe that? What a shame that would have been, him refusing to bless us with the pleasure that is Iwaizumi Hajime in nothing but a pair of shorts!”
What a shame indeed. You found yourself musing to yourself, cheeks heating up as you eyed Iwaizumi once more who looked over at you as if he could sense your thoughts and you were quickly raising your glass to your lips again to avoid eye contact.
The song playing ended, and a new one started up with a chorus of cheers as your friend and Oikawa both lit up. Before either of you could stop them, they were grabbing onto each other and molding back into the crowd of bodies out of sight.
You swallowed, eyes flicking over to Iwaizumi who looked just as out of place as you felt at that moment, pressed up against the wall. “You want to go somewhere quieter?” You asked, and his eyes just narrowed squinting at you before he was stepping into your body space and you felt yourself tense up. “What?” He questioned, head dipping down to ask it directly into your ear. “Y-You want to go outside? Quieter out there.” You respond, trying you best not to inhale the scent of his shampoo.
He nodded, taking your hand as he led you threw the mass of bodies, occasionally looking back to double check he hadn’t lost you.
You forced yourself to breathe, inhaling the smell of bodies as you coaxed your heart to quell it’s beating rhythm. As he opened the door, you welcomed the rush of cool night air as you stepped outside.
The smell of smoke reached your nose, eyes flicking over to the bonfire where people sat littered around it. Iwaizumi noticed it the same moment you did, tugging you lightly as he moved towards it.
He guided you to a spot slightly away from the others and you couldn’t help the beat of excitement as he sat down looking at you pointedly. You sat down, smoothing out non-existent clothing over your thighs.
You sat in silence for a moment, before Iwaizumi was reaching out and you felt yourself go statue still. His hand brushed your hair for a moment, before he was pulling back. “Sorry, you had a leaf in your hair.” He explained and you felt your cheeks heat up at it, “Oh, thank you.”
You cleared your throat lightly, “I like your costume.” You attempted, and he looked down at his own costume or lack of one, as he looked back at you with a curious eyebrow. “Oh?” he questioned and you felt your cheeks heat up as you nodded, “Yeah it...suits you.” You decided on and he gave you an amused look.
“Oikawa picked it. I didn’t want to come.” he admitted, and you nodded sharply as if it was the first time you were hearing it. “That’s what he said...I’m surprised he didn’t make you wear something...more revealing.”
Iwaizumi laughed, a noise that made your heart drop in excitement. Real, genuine laughter was rare from him. “He tried, I objected. We argued and settled on this.”
You smiled, raising your cup to your lips trying to hide it even as he watched you with fondness. A soft breeze blew through the area, carrying a hint of smoke to you even as you shivered despite the warmth from the fire. “I don’t suppose you have a jacket I can borrow,” You mused and he shook his head.
He hesitated for a moment, before he opened up an arm. “No, but you can come closer, if you want?” He offered, voice raising at the end making it a question. You hesitated, wondering if this was the point of no return as you inched closer to him, his arm closing around you as he pulled you flush against his skin.
This time when you shivered, it wasn’t from the cold. “I like your costume too,” He murmured, and you could feel the vibration from his words in your chest. “I’m glad I came actually, I wouldn’t want to miss this with you.” You were both silent for a moment, before he was leaning over, resting his cheek against the top of your head and you leaned into his touch further.
“I always thought your hair would be soft,” His voice was muffled now, his face slightly squished by the pressure he was putting on you, but to you it was like he was speaking clearer than he ever did before. “But it’s a lot softer than I expected.”
You had to wonder if he could feel the heat radiating from you as well, as you audibly swallowed. “Iwaizumi, if I didn’t know any better I’d say you were flirting with me.” You joked lightly, testing the waters carefully.
He pulls back then, frowning softly as he looks down at you and you instantly raise your cup to your lips, faking a swallow to break eye contact out of embarrassment desperately trying to think of a way you could play off that comment.
“I have been. For the past few months,” He admits, “You’re just now noticing?”
Your mouth dries immediately, dropping your cup from your lips and setting it on the ground as you stare at him in silence trying to process his words but before you can formulate a sentence of “Oh god me too.” those dark eyebrows were knitting together in confusion at your reaction.
“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said that.” He was apologizing now, “It was uncalled for and I didn’t stop to think.”
Then you were reaching out, touching your hand to his as he stops, staring up at him as you force your mouth to work. “Hajime, do you like me?” You question, trying out his first name in your mouth and oh yes, you could get used to that. You knew the answer, hell he had basically admitted it moments ago, but you had to be certain before you crossed the barrier you both had put up.
He hesitates, eyes locked with yours as he tries to figure out what exactly you were thinking, and how he should respond before he shrugs, shoulders dropping ever so slightly. “Yes...I like you, Y/N.”
You’re moving then, hand pulling back from his to reach for his face instead, he head tilting to rest in your palm carefully as he looks at you cautiously. “This is where you tell me to stop.” You offer him a way out still.
His eyes harden for a moment as he makes up his decision before he is reaching out with his own hands, trapping your face between them as he pulls you in to him, lips mashing against yours and oh, oh you are convinced this the moment you must have died and gone to heaven at some point because there is no way possible something could ever possibly feel this good.
His lips are soft, with a faint taste of beer to them as his tongue presses cautiously to your bottom lip in question, and you part your own lips, inviting his tongue into your mouth. One of your hands finds it’s way tangled in his hair holding him against you as the other slides down his body, feeling lean muscle under skin.
His own hands investigate downwards also, settling on holding your waist as he encourages your touch, squeezing lightly every once in a while in reassurement.
You aren’t sure who stops the kiss, but you both pull back, panting lightly as you stare at the others face. “I don’t regret it,” his voice is rough, scratchy with something you can't describe but you can’t help but grin looking at him.
“I don’t either,” You promise and then he is smiling and you can feel your heart flutter at it. “Good.” he responds and then he is pulling you back into his arms, your head resting on his chest as he leans his head onto yours and you can hear the drumming of his heart in excitement.
“I hate to admit it, but I’m really glad ShittyKawa dragged me here tonight,” He admits and you can’t help the laugh that bubbles up from your throat.
“I am too.”
a poem for small things
by Admin 1 & 2
The time has come, the first proper post for this segment we’ve settled on calling a poem for small things, a nod toward BWL and its Korean title. Like we said in our call for submission post, this is supposed to be something like a place full of positivity for vminnies (and perhaps the occasional namjinist) where you (and us) can share whatever we’d like in connection to vmin, both as vmin and as Jimin and Tae the individuals, and have something to raise our mood and also strengthen our vminnie confidence. We’ve gotten several wonderful submissions and quickly realized that for this first post the theme is mostly how I became a vminnie, even if three submissions talk more about vmin moments they enjoy instead.
I think it’s a really interesting theme, especially since everyone’s story is different, and everyone seems to find something else about vmin that captured their attention and hearts so sharing these memories and experiences is a great way to start off this segment. We’ve said it many times before, though I don’t think you can say it enough times, but this bond that Jimin and Tae share is truly special and so one of a kind, it’s wonderful to see how we all relate to and resonate with it in our own way and find something in it that makes us fall in love with their loves, regardless if we see it as platonic or romantic love. Love is love after all. 95z is love.
Tumblr media
For the order of these submissions, we’ll simply go in the order in which we’ve received them. Most of them came from anons, which is more than okay. We’ve also opened the possibility of submitting posts for those who would like to submit wordier posts/asks, should we do another edition of this. It all depends on how much you’ll enjoy it and if you’ll come through with more submissions that could be gathered for future posts.
Anyway, enough talking from our side, let’s dive into these submissions below the cut, shall we? Like we said in the original post (and demonstrated in the preview post), we’ll add some of our commentary and observations along the way, too.
From anon: This is going to be long winded story but Vmin is like a Serendipity to me. I've heard of BTS mainly from my hubby when he complains that times sq is packed because of BTS (when they’re in town and doing their rounds of morning shows). I knew they were very popular but it was a great surprise that i discovered them after watching ILand during lockdown. Their songs were great and i started playing their classics like Fire, DNA Fake Love etc. Then they did an appearance in the show...
I love how you heard about BTS because of your husband and Time Square being packed, this is honestly the most original and unique version of how I’ve come across BTS I’ve read over the years. Amazing!
I was drawn to Taehyung's beauty during their appearance in Iland. And my first Vmin ? moment was when Tae commented about being handsome and attractive are 2 things and being attractive weighs more - along those lines... then JM made a comment that its unfair that he's both and Tae was like Im talking about you... I went like ok he thinks JM is attractive- theyre good friends.... then Jimin did the FakeLove choreo and the camera focused on Tae and he had this wide smile...The Iland Tae/Jimin clips made me do a double take but I dismissed it since it was just only a few seconds worth of screen time but still...
I-Land vmin was really something else in both episodes.
Fun fact: I-Land was the first Korean survival show I’ve ever watched, mostly because it had something to do with BH and since it was streamed online with subs in real time. Unfortunately, my faves—Daniel and Taki—didn’t make it into ENHYPEN, though I’m happy that Taki will be in a future Japanese BH group.
But, going back to vmin, that moment with Jimin dancing FAKE LOVE and Tae looking at him with that boxy smile as though Jimin hung the stars in the sky? I melted, even if it was just one of those brief moments, yet still it’s so cute! And it was all over sns being shared by vminnies and non-vminnies alike. What a great time that was.
Tumblr media
Then VMAs Dynamite perf happened- both Vmin looking good. I saw a lot of their promos especially the Jimmy Fallon interviews... and I noticed in hindsight how JF was so careful when referring to Jimin ... Since Tae was my first bias, I searched YT for Tae related content eventually saw in my YT feed Vmin moments. Theres a lot of Vmin content in YT or maybe the T*ek*ok ones didnt really register as extraordinary to me. But defo the Vmin moments were extraordinary to me,,,the BV4 sleeping together, kitchen role play & BV3 JM excited to see Tae and them holding hands and then Tae crying and then Tae's busking with Jimin cheering him on were all amazing to see. Up to this day this specific YT vid stood out to me first
I actually went to check what video this is, and also looked at the comments where my favorite was this one: The staff member went straight to Jimin to tell him V was crying. That's all you need to know. They’re not wrong with that one, are they? That is pretty telling. BV3 vmin were a work of wonder, truly. Jimin watching Tae sing that Sam Smith song during the dinner in the sky looking all soft and endlessly fond?
Tumblr media
Jimin encouraging Tae to busk and gently petting his hair was just such a pure moment and showed how much Jimin appreciates Tae and the talent he has, how in moments when Tae might brush aside wanting to do something, is a little hesitant and unsure, Jimin will stand up for him and give him strength/encouragement, which reminds me of Tae’s vlive in April 2020 and the fact that Jimin had told him that he wants to be his source of strength. Beautiful. And it shows that it wasn’t just pretty yet empty words, but something he truly meant. They both do.
Then i came across vid trans of Friends & cried first time hearing it especially when it got to the part "One day when the cheer dies down, stay hey.." It felt raw and honest to me. Then there's MOT:E concert and that part in Dynamite where they bumped their heads seemed bizaare to me - i was like were they fighting? because JM looked really fierce(or maybe emotional) then i saw the close up. i couldnt remember the exact moment I became a Vminie but it made quarantine easier...
This, I’ve noticed, seems to be a recurring theme among quarantine ARMY and vminnies, the fact that becoming ARMY and vminnies made it easier, and it fits with what we’ve been saying about BTS for years: they will find you when you’ll need them most. And in these trying and uncertain times, it’s certainly proven true once again.
Thank you of much for your submission and sharing your story with us, and I’m glad they could make quarantine a little easier for you.
From anon: I've been following BTS on and off since BST, but only really consider myself a true fan late 2019. I can't recall having a bias at first, but I was captivated by Jimin's everything when I binge-watched all their content. I must admit, my first OTP is T*e/k*ok, where I fell down the route of considering Jimin 'an interfering 3rd party' in their relationship, and it shamed me. Since then I've been cycling through Jimin ships, namely yo*n/m*n, j*n/m*n, m*ni/m*ni, and I even thought that j*/k*ok was real at some point. Strangely, Vmin never struck me as something extraordinary. I don't want to blame anyone, but Vmin caught my eye after I watched official BTS content without filter (presumed bias/judgement) all in their glory. I realized that while other ships may go up-and-down as in one day there's a frenzy and another day quiet af, Vmin has been and is still going constant. That's what makes me love Vmin, and for the first time in my fandom life, I have no qualms about whether they are real or not. Their bond, whatever it is, is already precious and something to be cherished forever. Thank you for providing us vminies a special corner to speak up about our experience 💜
You’re very welcome! I hope you’ll like how this turned out as well. Thank you for sharing your story with us and personally I find it fascinating how, despite Jimin being the one who captivated you most at first, you still fell into the “he’s an interference for my ship” trap that’s quite popular with that particular ship. I’m glad though that that never ruined your love for Jimin. It’s also really interesting for me how you went through different Jimin ships yet it took you the longest time to notice vmin. I feel like, because vmin and vminnies are more “low key” than the other bigger and louder ships, as well as Tae and Jimin simply being quieter in their interactions (not always but you get the point) as compared to, for example, Jimin’s interactions with Hobi, Jungkook, or even Namjoon, it takes people a while to really notice them.
This is my favorite part of what you wrote, and I think it’s a great way to describe vmin in general and what makes them different from other ships in the grand scheme of things: I realized that while other ships may go up-and-down as in one day there's a frenzy and another day quiet af, Vmin has been and is still going constant.
From vminot7: So i fell into BTS hole after watching blood sweat and tears mv casually on youtube. Jimin immediately stole my attention with his unique voice, graceful moves and handsome features even though i didn’t know their names at that time. I watched more MVs and jimin continued to hold my attention but i was also extremely drawn to taehyung's voice and facial expressions. So i started looking for more content such as RUN BTS and other compilations and realized my love for all 7 of them. I also noticed how jimin always had a soft spot for taehyung and was curious about their dynamics. I started looking at more of vmin content and i was really surprised to see how in the early days they were nowhere near as soft with each other as they are now. I think they have a unique bond and i have never come across anything quite similar. Now vmin are both my biases and my bias wrecker is hoseok.
I admire jimin for being a hardworking, passionate perfectionist but also a caring soul who is always ready to offer love and comfort to people in need. I love taehyung for how he looks at the world in his unique ways and how he has a childlike awe for things and how he is so passionate over the things he loves. The thing i love about vmin together is how they are so different yet work so hard on their relationship when it would be easier to just not try that hard.
Ah, another mention of the queen that is Blood, Sweat and Tears. The MV truly is such a masterpiece so I’m not surprised that it caught your attention, and especially Jimin since he was…something else in that MV, or like Tae said, his eyes were temptation (this boy, I swear). Since you mentioned how in the first years they were nowhere near as soft with each other as they are now, I think watching their dynamic and relationship change and evolve over time showcases the one thing I think a lot of people (as well as movies and TV shows) forget or gloss over, despite it being so incredibly important: in order to make a relationship of any kind work, especially in order for it to grow as deep and strong as the one between all members and especially vmin, you need to put in the emotional work to make that happen. You have to make an effort, have to learn to understand the other person and teach them to understand you as well, learn to appreciate and love their little quirks and how to accept others. And it’s so clear that that’s what vmin did, continue to do, and it more than paid off in the long run. I’m glad you highlighted that in general but also as something you love about them.
While the overall bond between the members is a class of its own, I think especially what vmin have achieved is a whole masterclass in relationships and fostering strong ones, in and of itself. There is a lot I think we can learn from them and I’m so happy that people recognize how special they are.
Thank you so much for your submission!
From anon: There’s this small moments in Dear Class of 2020 that i just adore! I’ve watched it at least 20 times this past month
It starts with “Spring Day”- tae and jimin laugh and look at each other and it’s just so sweet!
Also, maybe it’s my delusional mind but after tae’s and jin’s small and adorable moment- it seemed that jimin did the same with junkook right after maybe out of i duuno if jealousy but like “pay attention to me too” kinda way- dont know really and maybe it’s me being extra🤷🏻‍♀️
I agree partially, in that Jimin watched Tae’s and Seokjin’s adorable moment, obviously must’ve thought of it as cute just like we did, and thought he could do the same with JK. I don’t think it had anything to do with jealousy, especially if we work off of the idea that vmin are a thing, but also because it’s a performance and these things primarily serve the purpose of being cute and entertaining use, in other words, it’s fanservice (which isn’t the evil word some portray it as). Also, within that same performance, Tae and Jimin actually sang some of the lyrics toward each other, therefore they, too, had a cute moment they shared with big smiles and everything, just like you mentioned.
Tumblr media
But we’ve gotten to see much more of Tae’s friendship with Seokjin in 2020, and especially the second half, so it was really sweet to see them interact during that song. Their friendship and dynamic is really a beautiful one, just like JKs bond with Seokjin, which I feel we’ve also gotten to see more of in recent months. Part of me (and that part can very well be wrong) feels that perhaps once the members caught on to Seokjin feeling the way he said he did/does, they decided to give him an extra dose of love and affection, off camera but also on where we can see it. That isn’t to say that they didn’t show him any of that before, but maybe they increased the intensity a little, a reminder that Seokjin truly is loved, that he deserves all of this, that it’s just his imposter syndrome (or at least what sounds like it) lying to him.
I’m still so touched and moved by the fact that he trusted us enough to share his feelings with us, to gift us Abyss and how it came to be, and that Bang PD was on his side and coaxed him into pouring his feelings into music, even if it would be “bad”, that the fear of it potentially being “bad” shouldn’t hold him back (and Namjoon helping in even if just a tiny bit with the lyrics). It was one of those times where I feel like we were all reminded that regardless of our opinions of BH and their doings, the members are surrounded by kind people who have their best interest in mind. After all what’s good for Bangtan is also good for the company, a win-win for everyone.
…wow, okay, I kind of went off on a tangent, I’m sorry…
Either way , then we have “Mikrokosmos” where we have a sweet moment at their part and towards the end where they switch mic and hear each other
I love this performance overall and especially “spring day”- jin’s and j-hope’s lovely voices and of course tae’s!! This song fits them so well and all the members of course
Well this is my rent , i love your blog and always wait for another post! Also i love the new idea and look forward to it!
Thank you so much for your submission and for bringing up their Dear Class 2020 performance. It was a truly magical one, and after reading this the first time, I did go and watch it again. To this day I’d still very much like to know how and when and why the mic switch between vmin happened, and I kind of hope that we might get a Bangtan B*mb or EPISODE about this eventually and it might shine some light on that question. Overall it was one of my favorite performances on 2020.
From Sky: While I enjoy cute, physical moments with VMIN, I really do value how emotionally attached they are to each other. For example (I don’t know if it fits as vmin moment but), I love how Jimin asked V to take the Promise cover photo, and how he ended up putting V’s name for credits on the cover. (Special Thanks to V, Best Photographer) This really shows a lot. Coz he can easily choose any Bighit photographer to take it. He could have chosen JK because we know how he takes good pics and vids too (and also apparently alot of people say that vmin had a falling out and that Jimin and JK were much more closer, lol). Or he could’ve asked Suga too bec he’s into cameras too. But he didn’t. He chose V, and chose to shout it out to the world how thankful he is for V’s help. RM co-wrote Promise, and maybe had offered more help in this project, but he didn’t put it in the cover. I’m not saying Jimin is ungrateful for not crediting RM in the cover. The difference is that he and RM had a vlive regarding the making of this song, a lot of people already know RM’s participation, he was officially credited as co-writer and Jimin really showed how thankful he is to RM. But no one knows of V’s participation (except for a snippet in that Run ep), so Jimin felt the need to tell it to everyone. I’m sure it’s not only the photos, I think he wanted to acknowledge how V helped him through the process, whether directly or indirectly. Also, remember this is Jimin’s first non-album solo single. By putting V’s name in it, he is sharing this very special song with his soulmate. How endearing it is! V also included Jimin in his first full English song. He used the two bears given by Jimin as Winter Bear’s cover photo and he included the photo Jimin took (sleeping V in the plane) in the MV. Like, seriously, they are trying to consciously imprint each other in their life’s milestones, openly or subtly. I’m crying. 😭
This was lovely, and yes, Jimin could’ve asked whoever to take those pictures, could’ve chosen any other ones, and yet he wanted Tae to be the one to take them, wanted those specific ones as covers. It’s very sweet and creates this subtle connection between Jimin, the song, and Tae. Sure, it isn’t the first time a picture Tae took is the cover for a SoundCloud song (the picture of JK on the 2U cover was also taken by Tae if I remember correctly), but it’s the fact that Promise is Jimin’s first non-BTS song, his first solo release, that makes it that much more special. Even more so when you think about how meaningful that song is to Jimin, and by having Tae as cover picture photographer, he’s in a way forever attached memory wise to that song as well, right?
Tumblr media
The same also goes with Winter Bear and the two ceramic bears. Remember how excited Tae looked when I kinda spoiled that gift being a thing happening in an upcoming RUN episode during Jimin’s vlive during the summer 2019? Adorable. It’s also curious how though the title is singular—winter bear not winter bears—there’s two ceramic bears. One for Tae, one for Jimin? Maybe, or maybe I’m reading too much into it. Either way, it’s really cute, and it was a very thoughtful gift, even more when we think about just how much Jimin loves that song.
From anon: Love this idea it's super cute!! 1st thing that came to my mind is a rather simple moment, jimin bopping taehyung's nose and making a lil game out of it
Taehyung asking for more and that dazed smile 🥺 he had the same expression in that concert when jimin placed his face just above him, tae's smile afterward... it was so pure u could almost read "love" in his eyes lol
Tumblr media
What a lovely note to end this post at, thank you for that. I don’t know what got into them during that photoshoot for Season’s Greetings 2020 but this was so disarmingly adorable. I remember when that moment appeared all over every sns and everyone just melted, myself included. Their smiles, the cute clothes, Tae’s head on Jimin’s chest, the softness and innocence of it, just all of it. It truly was so pure and like this sweet visualization of ‘love’.
And with that, we’ve reached the end. Did you like this? I had a great time reading your submissions and adding my little comments to them. If you’d like for us to continue this, same rules as last time, send in a submission marked with “VMC” and once we’ll have enough of them gathered, we’ll do this again, if you’re interested in more, that is. Send in whatever positive vmin you have, a thought, a moment, a memory, whatever you’d like.
Thank you once again to everyone who participated! :)
Tumblr media
Kim Seokjin.
That’s it. That’s the name. That’s the tweet.
You never knew three syllables could affect you this much, could bring you this great distress. The mere mention of it makes you reel, roll your eyes, ball up your fists, makes the tiny hairs on your nape stand on end.
Long story short, Kim Seokjin makes your blood boil.
It doesn’t help either that he was Adonis himself – complete with cat eyes, plump lips, and a dashing smile, or that he has rock-hard abs hiding underneath that white double-breasted jacket, or that he busts out corny ass dad jokes as much as he winks at people (which is a LOT of times, by the way), or that he’s an undeniably an exceptional chef (such as yourself, duh) and has now erected a gourmet restaurant next door to rival yours, OR the completely obvious fact that you two have history.
The short period of time in the past that you shared with him wasn’t exactly one you would be embarrassed of, or something you want to forget. Instead, it’s the exact opposite. You’re ashamed of the fact that you hadn’t gotten over it until now, three years later. He was your OGF – Mr. One Great Fuck. Kim Seokjin still holds the belt for the title of making you cum six consecutive times in a single night. How he managed to do that and how nobody else has measured up to that, you’ll never know.
You’d initially met him at Les Coulisses Du Chef in Paris, where you had enrolled yourself in a patisserie class to expand your knowledge on French pastry and hopefully get a certificate for it. You’d been meaning to take the class since forever, yet you’d been waitlisted year after year until last year when one of the applicants had backed out, they’d called you in, merely half a month before the program started.
Three weeks into the semester, Seokjin had introduced himself to you, or rather, had told you a dad joke as an introductory preview of his personality. You’re glad he did though, else you would have been surprised if you discovered the kid was part Greek god, part chef, part dad jokes, and .01% brain cell.
“What do you call a fake noodle?” asks .01% brain-cell-man seated beside you, rolling up his sleeves to reveal the prominent veins on his forearms. You’re momentarily distracted by the action, completely missing out the question he’d just asked you. “Sorry, what?”
“What do you call a fake noodle?” Gosh, you shouldn’t have asked him again. If only he knew the number of times you’d hear- “Impasta!” He snorts, holding a fettuccine noodle in one hand and the other clutching onto his tummy as he doubles in his laughter.
You’re just standing beside him, slack-jawed, unsure if this was just a sick dare. Who was this guy? Was he even in the same class as you? Was he high? Perhaps he mistook flour for coke? His laughter dies down when he sees your face, sans-reaction.
“Wait, you understand English right? Um… comprendre English? Oui?”
“Yes, I can understand English.”
“Then why didn’t you laugh?” You raise a brow. This stranger just comes up to you, tells you a lame joke, and now he expects you to laugh?
“This is gonna sound real mean, but it was really an old joke...and a lame one at that,” you retort, your face crumpled into one of faux pity.
“Hey! No need to make it personal!” he counters, placing a hand over his heart, face contorting into a grimace. “You, Rafa!” He half-shouts, pointing an accusatory finger to someone behind you. “You said it would be a great ice-breaker!” Your eyes follow the Rafa he’s pointing at, the latter quickly shakes his head, telling you he doesn’t know the man in French.
“Is this man bothering you?” Rafa nods sadly.
“What?! How dare you turn the tables on me?? I’m your only friend!” You turn to glare at pasta guy, who continues to wail behind you. Rafa snorts from across at the sight of pasta guy making a fool of himself behind you and eventually takes pity on him.
“I’m sorry, Jin’s just been meaning to talk to your since the start of semester, so he’s asked me for advice on how to approach you...I told him to tell you a good ‘ole joke in the kitchen since we’re all chefs here...I didn’t actually think he’d take it...seriously.”
“Wow! Betraying and exposing me all at once!! Why won’t you just fry me alive in olive oil, huh? That would be less painful.” Jin-pasta complains, arms gesticulating wildly in the air. You watch them unabashedly bicker in front of you concurrently amused at the whole spectacle.
The three of you become close friends soon thereafter, Jin claiming your trio as the ‘Kitchen Musketeers’. Yes, he managed to convince the entire class to call your tiny group of friends that name. And yes, that wasn’t the worst idea Seokjin had in mind when he was considering a name for your trio. You didn't even want to start to reminisce about the rest of Seokjin’s bizarre suggestions: Charlie’s Cooks (to his defense, you did have a substitute mentor named Charlie), Gourmetbusters, Pecanpuff Girls, The Three Sausagees (more like two sausages and one bun). You’ve always cringed at the last one.
Despite your trio’s antics, Rafa considers himself the third wheel more than anything. Rafael was not oblivious to the crush on Seokjin that you’ve been harboring for months.
It was the day of your graduation from the short course you’d taken - the three of you decided to have a celebratory wine party at Seokjin’s rented apartment. That same night was when you found yourself drunk on pinot noir and Seokjin’s lips. The rest was history.
Finding the bed and the rest of his apartment empty the next morning, you took your leave and fared your walk of shame along the streets of Paris with teary eyes and a bruised heart.
Your Mr. OGF also turned out to be Mr. One God-Tier Fucker. Or perhaps the title also belonged to you, Ms. One Gigantic Fool, who thought that maybe she could have been more than a one-night-stand between two colleagues whose relationship could never be more than a professional one.
Colleagues. The apparent ‘label’ lets out a boisterous laugh at your face. Gosh, you’re a pathetic fucking fool.
Thankfully, your flight back to Korea was scheduled that day as well,, so you wouldn’t have to see Seokjin’s pretty face any longer or rather - what you wouldn’t admit even to yourself - you wouldn’t be able to confront the face of the truth you wanted to hide deep beneath the recesses of your heart.
At least, that’s what you thought.
Tumblr media
One and a half years after you got your certificate in Paris, you had finally saved enough money to start your business - a gourmet restaurant situated in the heart of Gangnam. You already had patrons from the restaurant where you previously worked, and the opening of Canapé had garnered more customers than you initially expected.
Business had been thriving for a year, that is, until someone decided to erect a new gourmet restaurant just beside yours. Having a rivalling establishment wasn’t new news to you, neither did it truly bother you as to no longer having the monopoly in gourmet restaurants located in this part of Gangnam.
A week after the opening of your neighbor’s Ambrosia - you decided to bring over a friendly bottle of wine you had shipped straight from France with the hopes that you can become acquainted with your fellow restaurateur.
As you move along the crosswalk and reach Ambrosia’s podium outside intended for the maitre d’, you shift your weight between your legs, an unconscious habit that only Seokjin took notice of. Ridding your thoughts of the man who shall no longer be named, you let your mind wander off to your own worker’s description of the alleged owner.
Out of all your staff’s depiction of Ambrosia’s owner, it’s your sommelier’s and manager’s descriptions that have struck you the most.
Yoongi, your timid sommelier, tells you that the owner was a stout man in his mid-forties with Caucasian features, while your manager, Jinhee said he was a man around your age with a face and built that could easily pass for a K-Pop idol.
You were leaning towards Yoongi’s description because Jinhee would have most likely mistaken a real idol for the owner since there were plenty of celebrities who hung out in Gangnam and would meet up in restaurants like yours. Either way, celebrity look-a-like or not, you were determined to meet your neighbor.
Tumblr media
“There’s someone outside, Hobi,” a busser informs the maitre d as he wipes the last table for the day. Three pairs of eyes look at you through the glass.
You continuously peer from the outside as you can’t see much from due to the darkness inside, where only a few dim lights are on. “Go on then, Hobi,” the owner states, nudging the maitre d towards the door.
Hoseok takes a glimpse of you through the glass panel and faces the owner. “Hyung, she seems pretty. Why don’t you do it? You ought to have a proper girlfriend right now. It’s about time you move on from your love interest in Paris! Plus you’re the owner of the restaurant!”
“Hobi, I still have to do kitchen check, remember? And for the record, I have moved on from her. Chop chop.” Hobi gives him an incredulous look, highly doubting his boss had already forgotten about her. “Right away, Mr. Seokdon Ramsay.”
You’re drawn from your thoughts when you hear the melodic sound of the bell as the door opens and a man with a bright smile comes out. “Hello! My name’s Hobi, can I help you with anything?”
“Um..hi! I’m from Canapé just across the street… are you, perhaps, the owner of Ambrosia?”
“Oh! I’m not the owner…I wish I was though if I had someone pretty like you looking for me…” You laugh awkwardly in response, unsure of what you should reply to such a line. The two of you remain standing there, staring at each other. “Um...is the owner there then? It would be nice if I can speak to him or her or them…” you let out a small cough, looking away.
“Right! Of course, sorry about that! I’ll tell him to come out.” Hobi scurries back inside and soon you hear incoherent yelling and laughter from inside the restaurant.
“Hyungnim! Hyung!!” Hobi calls out once more, eyes searching wildly for Seokjin. “What now?” Seokjin emerges from the kitchen with the busser in tow. “Hyung! She’s fucking hot! And I feel like I’ve known her from somewhere…plus she says she’s from our neighboring restaurant! I told you, you were the one who should’ve gone out there. By the way, I think she’s calling wine o’clock too – and the bottle she’s holding looks like expensive French Cabernet Sauvignon!”
Seokjin narrows his eyes at his maitre d, “You seem to have been spending a lot of time with that sommelier from across the street.” The owner of Ambrosia shakes his head at his friend, who pushes him towards the door. “Hurry! You wouldn’t want to keep a pretty girl waiting!”
You’ve been waiting patiently outside, shifting your weight from one foot to the other as you watch people come and go. The streets of Gangnam was always lively, and it still surprises you at this point that you had decided to put up a restaurant in the midst of the hustle and bustle of a city like such because you’ve always wanted to erect one by the countryside with the whole organic theme going on. Nonetheless, you were happy with your decision of establishing one in Gangnam.
The bell dings again, and as you turn on your heel to check the much-anticipated owner of Canapé, you nearly drop the pricey bottle of red wine in your hands. It’s Mr. man-who-shall-no-longer-be-named. You’re stood there shell-shocked, mouth agape at the man in front of you.
He hasn’t changed one bit, well, except for the more handsome features. He’s changed his hairstyle too, now opting for an exposed forehead instead of those bangs he’d impulsively cut by his own in the middle of the night. His shoulders remain the same, miraculously; just an inch wider and he could’ve been a great replacement for a meter stick at Encore, the clothing store that offered bespoke clothing just down the road.
“_________?”
Seokjin starts to speak, yet you can’t seem to bring yourself to do the same. There’s too much you wanted to say, ask , and rant about that your mouth remains hanging open awkwardly – almost as if you’re squawking. You bow in embarrassment, apologizing for your behavior and run back to your restaurant.
Tumblr media
The Gourmet Chefs Association of East Asia was holding its annual even today at The Andaz Seoul and you just had this gut feeling Seokjin was going to be there. With yesterday’s discovery that your neighboring, rivaling, restaurant was owned by none other than Kim Seokjin himself, you already had an inkling he was invited to GCAEA’s event tonight.
Your suspicions had been confirmed as one of the event’s producers sent you an email earlier this morning, that which contains the list of nominees for the title of GCAEA’s Chef of the Year – the same title that was bestowed upon you just last year. Seokjin was the first nominee for this year’s awarding ceremony.
Kudos to him. Despite knowing that your hatred for him was fueled by more personal reasons, you knew deep down inside the recesses of your brain that he was a really, really talented chef. Probably just as good as you – of course, you can easily admit that you’re still lacking in plenty but you don’t think your pride will allow you to accept defeat from Seokjin just like that after all he’d done.
You only had the chance to look at Seokjin for a good seven seconds yesterday, but it had taken you at least seven hours, a tub of ice cream, and a Captain America movie marathon to reassure yourself that having seen him so close yesterday wasn’t just an actual nightmare.
As much as you hated to admit it, he remained just as handsome as he was three years ago. What you couldn’t get over with though, was how he actually smiled at you yesterday. That little fucker had to audacity to show his perfect little pearly whites at you! All over again, you’re reminded of how he left you in his room the morning after, or how much of a fucking fool you were for having believed that the two of you could’ve been something more than friends.
Rearranging your dress for the nth time today, you take another look at the mirror, twisting and turning to see if there might be some thread hanging off the hems of the dress. You’re starting to question your decided outfit for the night. You had a dress done just for this event – or more specifically, what sort of dress Jinhee had ordered to be sewn just for this event.
It hugged your curves perfectly – the dress a perfect merger between modest and seductive. It had a nude-illusion base with silver sequins sewn onto the thin fabric and a low-cut neckline that gives everyone a lovely view of your cleavage.
This one could easily pass as an evening gown for a Miss Universe candidate. You felt confident, beautiful, and sexy but at the same time you felt like you wanted to just huddle yourself up in your duvet in the corner of your room and eat ice cream. You weren’t uncomfortable with showing skin from time to time, but having been clad in a double-breasted jacket on a daily means it felt strange having your neckline displayed in public.
Your phone dings, indicating a text message. Yoongi had offered to be your chauffeur for this evening, of course, after being coerced and bribed by Jinhee into doing it.
[yoongles 🍷 ] 6:43pm
hurry up, or i’ll leave you behind
[you] 6:43pm
yoongs
It’s MY car WE’RE using
you don’t even have my keys yet
[yoongles 🍷 ] 6:45pm
u get the idea, woman
dont keep me waiting
“Well maybe if you won’t stop texting, I’ll be quicker,” you grumble to your phone, placing it inside your purse so Yoongi won’t bother you any longer. Doing one last twirl in the mirror, you grab your necessities you’ve gathered on your bedside table and sweep them into your purse.
Tumblr media
“You clean up nicely, boss.”
Squinting your eyes at Yoongi with his words, you send him a grateful smile nonetheless. “I’m gonna take that as a compliment.” This was the closes thing to an actual compliment that you were ever going to receive from Yoongi in your entire lifetime, so you were sure to keep his words close to your heart.
Taking your car keys from your purse, you toss them to Yoongi who catches them deftly with one hand. “Ooh, you looked cool when you did that.”
“What are you talking about?”
“You gave me a compliment, so I’m going to give you one in return. As a token of gratitude.”
“Remind me never to say anything to you ever again.”
“Hey! You talk back like that to the woman who’s giving you money for your daily needs?! And you won’t even open the door for me?” you ask your past neighbor-turned-sommelier-turned-close-friend. “It’s called a salary, Ms. _______. And I receive that as compensation because I give you my services in exchange for it. Plus, I’m already seated here,” Yoongi shrugs, adjusting the rear view mirror.
Rolling your eyes, you begrudgingly open the door to your backseat, exerting much effort in swinging one leg after the other with your incredibly tight evening gown. And, of course making sure the short train won’t get caught between the car doors.
Yoongi checks if you’re all good through the rear-view mirror and once he sees you buckle up, he lets the engine roar to life. You take out your phone from your purse to see if you’ve received any other emails, only for the phone to get flung from your hands – including you.
The car surges forward all of a sudden and Yoongi steps on the breaks just in time. You hear Yoongi curse under his breath, looking over his shoulder to check if you’re okay. “Shit! I forgot you drove a Maserati!”
“I think the more appropriate thing to do is to ask me if I’m still okay…Also, it doesn’t matter what kind of car I drive, because I think you forgot how to actually drive at all.” You complain, adjusting the seatbelt across your chest, the sudden jolt leaving a diagonal red mark just by your collarbone.
“Well, you aren’t dead, so technically speaking, you’re okay.” Unbelievable. You let out a loud scoff, unable to think of anything wittier to say. “Just please get me there in one piece, Yoongs.”
Tumblr media
You manage to get to the hotel in one piece. Thank heavens.
The small talk you made with Yoongi on your way to the hotel had temporarily taken your mind off the jitters but now that he’s left you standing by the entrance of the hotel, the nerves had definitely returned, tenfold. You’re also unfortunately dropped off at a spot where a standee of yours holding the Gourmet Chef of the Year award is staring back at you. God, you hated that photo. They did not give your eyebrows justice, at all.
You exhale all your nervousness away as you take the steps to the lobby. “_______!” Someone calls out, the voice too familiar to miss out on.  “Sunbae!” You turn around to see one of the most revered chefs in Korea, and definitely one of your favorite mentors, Choi Jiyoung. The woman nearing her fifties extends her arms out in greeting and you give her a tight hug. You had worked under her supervision in the past, and she had taught you almost everything you knew about Korean cuisine.
“Ah, it’s been too long darling! Look at you! You’ve grown into such a beautiful woman!” Misun praises as her grip on you tightens and pulls you by the elbow, “Surely, there’s a lucky man that has swept my sweet _______ by now!” Your senior adds, punctuating her sentence with a wink at the end.
“I’ve been pretty busy these days… and dating hasn’t really crossed my mind recently.”
‘That’s because the last man I’ve wanted to date was three years ago and he’d just considered me a one-night stand and now after I’ve struggled to burn his existence from my memory and to be very frank with you, I really haven’t gotten over him and now he just so happens to be the owner of the restaurant beside mine. Also, he’s stealing my customers.’ Comes your real answer inside your head, but you’ll never tell anyone that.
Jiyoung pouts at your answer, but taps your forearm, “We’ll talk more about that inside. Come on darling, the event is starting.”
Tumblr media
Seokjin sees you finally enter the lobby, eyes scanning the few people scattered around the area as you look for a familiar face you could approach. All eyes are on you, yet you don’t notice, like always. You don’t realize how beautiful you are, blushing furiously under the simplest compliments. You’ve got this certain charm that certainly draws people towards you, all the more when they get to know you better, just like what you did to him.
Seokjin remembers the first time he’d actually seen you – on the television. He’d been scrolling aimlessly through the channels, trying to look for something to watch as he waits for the water to boil for his ramen. He’d accidentally stopped by Channel K99’s ‘Choi Jiyoung Kitchen Specials’ reruns during midnight when he checked his phone after it dinged, alerting him of a notification on his email: just another alert to renew his ‘KOREA’ magazine subscription, where he’d secretly get new recipes, try them out, add a little twist, and serve them to his customers at his parent’s restaurant.
As he was about to press the off button on the remote, you enter the frame as the camera pans out when Choi Jiyoung introduces you as her new assistant and protégé. For some reason, this show just got all the more interesting for Seokjin, who’s clearly drawn to you and not the scrumptious seafood platter that Chef Choi was preparing.
He’d followed you on all his social media accounts after that night, even going as far as turning on his notifications for each post you made. He was unsure what had drawn him to you in the first place – whether it be the fact that you were probably the first female chef he’d seen in Korea that was just about his age (that or he really just didn’t pay any attention to women in the same field during the early years of his career), or that you were unbelievably skilled at such a young age with apparently, a lot of culinary awards and certificates under your belt.
Funny enough, Seokjin wasn’t really one to delve into the world of pastry but judging from your most recent Instagram posts during those days, you had taken interest in patisserie, which only caused Seokjin to attempt baking his own first croissant. He finally understood your enthusiastic devotion for it ever since. Then came Les Coulisses Du Chef, where Rafa, an exchange-student-turned-friend of his from his culinary school days had secured him a slot for a semester at the prestigious school of gastronomy in Paris to get a certificate on French pastry.
He wasn’t expecting you though, out of all people, to join the official list of the class as well, last minute.
It took him three weeks before he finally spoke to you, much to Rafa’s exasperation. Seokjin would keep nagging the French man, telling him how much he wanted to talk to you, yet he can’t seem to grow some balls to do so. In annoyance, he’d told Seokjin that the best way to break the ice was to tell a joke – this time, much to Seokjin’s chagrin. He’d never thought secondhand embarrassment was a thing until Seokjin actually heeded his advice and told you about the ‘impasta’. Surprisingly enough, it worked, so voila!
If only you knew how nervous Seokjin was during that time, clammy hands and all. In fact – if only you knew how jittery Seokjin was whenever he was near you. He’s pretty sure he’d ruined his credibility and career after busting out that lame ass joke Rafa had told him, but it turned out to be the only way he actually got closer to you so he was partly grateful for Rafa’s advice – reputation be damned.
Just like tonight, the moment his eyes fall on you, he feels like he’s being drawn back to his room, eyes trained on you as you diligently followed each of Chef’s Choi’s directions, or that time he’d first spoke to you back in your French patisserie class. He diverts his gaze elsewhere from the fear that you might catch him staring.
“Hey, man. Isn’t that ________? The girl you’ve been crushing on since forever?” Minjae asks, elbowing Seokjin at the waist. The latter grimaces slightly in pain, before reluctantly letting his gaze settle on you once more.
Jungkook returns from the bathroom, joining the duo by the reception. “Wow, who’s that?” the younger man asks, nodding towards your direction. With Jungkook being a fairly new member of the association, curiosity is getting the best of him with all the faces he’s seeing.
Similar to a little kid at a toy shop, he’s constantly asking his hyungs if the people he was seeing were the actual people he’d seen on the internet or on the television. Minjae, who indulges every question of the maknae of their small circle of friends with great enthusiasm, answers Jungkook. “That’s _______, Kook.”
“No way! That’s her?! As in the _________?” The only female chef in Korea who received her first Michelin star in her twenties?! As in ________ Choi Jiyoung’s protégé?!”
“Yes, Kook, that’s her alright. And also the same ________ who will hear you soon enough and will find you weird if you don’t keep your voice down.”
“She’s also the same recipient of the award your Seokjin hyung is nominated for this year,” Jiwon adds, wriggling his eyebrows at Seokjin.
“That’s so cool!” Jungkook exclaims as their whole group watches you approach the infamous Choi Jiyoung. “Hyung, do you think she’s single?” Jungkook asks to nobody in particular, considering they were all his hyungs. Minjae and Jiwon glance at Seokjin who returns their glances with a light glare.
“Why don’t you go find out after the party then?” Seokjin suggests, ignoring that certain pang of jealousy that blossoms in his chest at his own proposal.
“Tell me you’re kidding, hyung.”
“Huh?”
“Come on! That’s your girl! You’re going to let go of her just like that?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Kook.”
“Hyung. I may be the maknae, but I am neither blind nor dumb. Anyone with two eyes and a functioning brain will know you have the hots for her.” Minjae and Jiwon snicker at the younger one’s comment. Seokjin, albeit being second to the youngest, gives them a glare the makes them cower behind Jungkook.
“Am I really that obvious?”
“Well no. But every time we go out, the only notifications that pop up in your screen are her posts on Instagram. Don’t you think that’s a tad bit…pathetic, hyung?”
Ooh and aahs  come from the two other men, who are reveling at the harsh bluntness of Jungkook’s words. It’s the maknae who receives Seokjin’s side-eye next. “Need I remind you who’s the older one here?”
“The point exactly! We’re not getting any younger, hyung. Better ask her out now…before I beat you to it.” Seokjin’s mouth falls open in astonishment, while Jungkook just smiles at him in return. “Come on hyung, they’re calling us inside.”
Tumblr media
“Well, well, would you look at that stunner over there?” She comments, nodding her head towards someone over your shoulder. There he was, the infamous Kim Seokjin, clad in an all-black ensemble, a single silver chain necklace hanging on his neck. His hair is swept to the side, revealing a bit of his forehead.
“Oh boy.” Jung Chungae fans herself as your greatest rival turns sideways, showing off his side-profile while animatedly telling a story to a fellow colleague seated with them. “Oh how I wish we could just go back to our golden years for just one night!” The rest of the table laughs at Chungae’s comment.
“I personally think you and that man would make a great couple.” Jiyoung says, leaning towards you.
“The other man sat on his right doesn’t seem to think that way though,” Chungae says, picking on her dessert, whispering ‘cute guy from same table’ discreetly. As if on cue, the rest of the ladies, you included, turn your heads towards Seokjin’s table. True to sunbae Chungae’s implications, there was another man beside Seokjin who was staring back at you. You believe Jungkook was his name… nevertheless, you get shy under his stare, averting your eyes back to the presently attractive flower arrangement at the center of your table.
The servers pile inside in pairs, approaching each table to take your dessert plates. You see the host rise from his chair and take the stairs to the stage. He taps the microphone, checking if the audio was working, “To announce this year’s Gourmet Chefs Association of East Asia – Chef of the Year award, may I call on Ms. _________.”
Minjae nudges Seokjin as you stand up from your seat. “Hyung, quit it before other people see you.”
“Come on now, get your ass up and walk her to the stage!”
“She can perfectly walk on her own though?”
“Come on, it’s plus points both for her and the crowd! Give these oldies a show, idiot.”
“N-“
“Hyung, if you won’t do it, I will.” Jungkook says from across the table, eyeing you as you excuse yourself from the other ladies in your table.
Seokjin stares at Jungkook and purses his lips. He discards of the napkin on his lap at once, lightly throwing the piece of cloth on the table. As he stands up, few murmurs of curiosity follow him as he approaches you.
“Ms. ________, may I?” You’re surprised when somebody suddenly appears on your side, offering his arm out for you to hold onto. You hear sunbae Jiyoung quietly cheer you on, nodding her head once to accept Seokjin’s display of manners. The rest of the audience likewise cheers the young man on with a few men whooping and a number of ladies cooing at the sight.  Frankly, it wasn’t even that long of a walk until the stage but a part of you was grateful, knowing for yourself that you truly weren’t used to wearing long dresses like these.
As you both reach the stage, with your hand hooked around Seokjin’s elbow, he places another hand atop yours for extra support. The action seems to have the opposite effect. Suddenly all too aware of the proximity between you two, a shiver runs through your spine, secretly hoping the gulp that you make at the sensation goes unnoticed. At the end of the stairs, you give him a curt bow and say your thanks, unable to look him in the eye.
The emcee hands you the microphone and an envelope, containing the name of the awardee. You tap the mic once, then twice. “This is on, right?” The audience laughs in response. “Woops, sorry,” you apologize meekly before starting your half-impromptu, half-practiced speech.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank, first and foremost, the board of judges who have bestowed upon me this same award this time last year, and now I have had the greatest honor to announce the awardee later on. I would also like to send my gratitude to all those who have been my mentors here in Korea and overseas – for I have taken your pieces of advice to my heart and they have guided me wonderfully throughout these years, especially sunbae Choi Jiyoung, who has molded me into the woman and chef that I am today. Also, here’s a special mention to Chef Lee for having prepared this wonderful course for us this lovely evening – I absolutely admire how he manages to make Korean staples like Kimchi Jjigae and Pajeon so…flavorful like it’s been made with his entire heart and soul poured into each detail. Wow. Could we have a round of applause for Chef Lee tonight?”
The audience complies quickly with your request while Chef Lee gives you a bow of gratitude by the doors of the event hall.
“Lastly, I would also like to acknowledge the presence of a beloved mentor of mine, back when I took patisserie classes back in Paris – Mr. Frank Boucher, who had, by the way, also prepared his signature Apple Tarte Tatin for our dessert tonight. So without further ado, the Gourmet Chefs Association of East Asia – Chef of the Year award goes to, drumroll please!” Your tongue feels like it got stuck in your throat, but you pull yourself back to reality quick enough so no one else notices.
“Kim Seokjin! Congratulations!”
Seokjin had just barely gotten back to his seat when he hears his name being called. He stands up, beautiful facial features twisted into one of confusion. “You won Chef of the Year bro! Congrats!” Minjae pats Seokjin’s butt briefly before pushing him back towards the stage.
As you hand him the trophy, you give each other a small smile, likewise posing for the cameras. The photographer gestures for you to scoot closer to each other with his hands. It’s getting harder to fake your smile. You wanted nothing more but to go home. Or maybe you could pass by Canapé and take a bottle of wine home for yourself
Thankfully, the awarding the Chef of the Year signals the nearing conclusion of the event, and as soon as you get back to your seat, you send a text to Yoongi, telling him that the event will be over in a couple more minutes.
The event ends quicker than expected, and you find yourself bidding goodbye to everyone else as soon as the emcee officially ends the ceremony. You badly wanted to go home and rest, with only a few hours left for sleep before another work day starts.
You see Yoongi pull up by the entrance after a few more minutes. “How was the party?” You tell him what happened during the event, completely leaving out Seokjin’s appearance and antics. “Let’s just drop you off by your apartment first then I’ll go drive back to the restaurant to grab something.”
“I can go with?”
“It’s fine Yoongs. Besides, we have work in a few hours. You already sleep during work, what more if I keep you awake for an extra couple of minutes tonight?”
Yoongi just shakes his head at you, saying nothing else in reply. He finds you uncharacteristically quiet after a big event like this and wants to ask you about it, but you seem too lost in your thoughts that he doesn’t want to bother you any further. You arrive at his place shortly and as you get down from the car to switch places, you give him a hug and thank him for being your chauffeur. “Oh, and _______? Your French Cabernet Sauvignon is at the third row from the top. And drink at home, please. See you tomorrow.”
Tumblr media
Passing through the main entrance of your restaurant, you turn on a few lights by the wine rack to aid your search for the alcoholic beverage. You make a beeline for the wooden structure attached to the wall. Third row from the top… reaching out, you grab on a bottle, reading out its name, ‘Chateau Pichon Longueville 2015 Pauillac’. This will most likely do the trick.
All of a sudden, a knock comes from your door, startling you out of your wits. Quickly, you scurry to the kitchen, looking for something that can protect you in case this person means harm. Your extensive collection of knives is what comes into your mind first, but you wouldn’t want them to be considered murder weapons, in case the worst scenario comes into play.
So you settle for the rolling pin, clutching the cylindrical utensil tightly in your hands. “Who’s there?” you call out, hoping the fear wont seep through your words. “Um, it’s Frank. Frank Boucher. Is that you inside, _______?”
Letting your hands fall to the side, you cautiously near the door, still clutching the rolling pin in your hands. You can’t be too sure nowadays. You sneak a glace through the glass panels to confirm his identity. Breathing a sigh of relief when you see it really was your mentor back in Paris, you set aside the rolling pin and unlock the door.
“_________!”
“Ah, and to what do I owe this pleasure, Chef Boucher?”
“I wanted to talk to you back at the event, but I’m guessing you left early…”
“Um, yes…still a lot of work to do tomorrow.”
“Can I get you anything, perhaps? I- I grabbed a bottle of wine just now… would you like some? Or water maybe?”
“Wine is always a great choice, _______. Also I’m here to tell you something important, but I’ll let you grab two glasses first, for our usage.”
“Of course! Please feel free to sit anywhere you like.”
“Quaint restaurant you have here, ______. This is the same Canapé you told me in your email right?”
“Yep! Would you mind a few crackers and goat’s cheese to go with the wine?”
“That sounds perfect, though you really don’t have to bother yourself with all of that…” You shrug off his comment, reassuring him that it was the least you could do after having taught you so much when you were back in Paris.
You finally get everything ready, one hand holding a plate full of crackers and cheese, while the other holds two wine glasses. As soon as you get seated, Frank takes upon him the honor of opening the bottle, pouring a sufficient amount of the beverage onto your glasses. “I meant to give this to you personally earlier, but I could no longer find you after the party ended.” He hands you a white envelope with your name and Canapé’s address printed at the back.
“You’ve been invited to the Asian Gourmet Conference in the Philippines next week.” You choke on the wine you’re drinking, embarrassingly turning into a coughing mess in front of your mentor. He looks at you expectantly as you open the envelope.
“Wait. This is real?! No way!” Frank laughs at your reaction, excitement evident in your voice as you skim over the words indicated on the paper. “Oh my goodness! This is such a great event! And the opportunities! Please bring the wine home, Chef Boucher! It’s on the house.” The French man laughs harder at your offer, but he doesn’t decline.
“I’m glad you’re this excited, because you’re going with Seokjin.”
Immensely thanking the heavens that you were looking down the whole time while reading the document, else your mentor would’ve seen the instantaneous scowl that graced your face at the mere mention of the-man-who-shall-not-be-named.
You force a smile onto your features before looking back up at Frank. “Kim Seokjin? As in Kim Seokjin who just won GCAEA’s Chef of the Year Award earlier?”
With slumped shoulders, you lean farther backward in your seat. The Asian Gourmet Conference was one of the most anticipated conferences in the whole of Asia. It was an event highly awaited by many in the culinary field, especially one of its main events where they invite gourmet chefs from all parts of the world to compete for the best dish ever and a $200,000 prize.
The contest was another thing though, because two representatives will be vying for each country, so the winning pair will get to come home with $100,000 each. You really wouldn’t have put any thought into who your partner would have been if you were.
Your head fills with dread at the thought of having Seokjin as your partner. It was bad enough that he owns the gourmet restaurant next to yours, and that he’d attended GCAEA which caused more unwanted interactions with him.
“Yes him. From what I’ve heard, people say he’s a rising star, and that his newly established restaurant was getting a lot of good reviews.”
“It’s the restaurant next to mine, chef.”
“Ha! Seems like you’ve finally met your match, darling. Pretty sure that can apply romance-wise as well…”
“Why does everybody keep shipping us?” You wonder, subconsciously vocalizing your thoughts.
“You two look like you have his-…I think… you two would just look great together!”
“Ship? You know what ship means?” You look at him incredulously.
“It’s when you like the idea of two people together right? My daughter says it all time because of these Korean boys with bright hair – actually, when she knew I was going here to attend GCAEA as a guest she kept on nagging me to buy her albums and these sticks…”
“Sticks?”
“Yeah, the lightning ones?”
“Lightning?” You stifle a laugh. “You mean lightsticks, right?”
“Whatever they’re called, _______.” Frank Boucher gives you his infamous glare.
Nearly snorting at the sight of your mentor looking physically and mentally exhausted with trying to keep up with his fangirling daughter, you offer him another bottle because he seems like he needs it more than you do.
Your conversation falls into talking about your current lives and the stresses of running a restaurant, with Frank eventually leading the conversation about the person you’d least likely enjoy talking about. He tells you about your neighboring rival, how he’s done just as well with his own place like what you did with yours. He’s proud that both of his students had established their names in Korea’s gourmet society even at such a young age.
The clocks finally hits ten thirty and Frank takes this as his cue to get going.“Great! Your plane ticket and hotel booking has probably already been sent by my secretary to your email. The convention is only for three days, but the two extra days are on me. Take it as a gift for Canapé’s opening. Go enjoy yourself, _______”
Forcing another bright smile onto your face, you bid your goodbye to your mentor, locking the front door of your restaurant as he leaves.  Five days with Seokjin. May the gods have mercy on you.
The four-hour flight to the Philippines had been excruciatingly awkward. To say the least.
You hadn’t talked to each other for the most part. In fact, the only time you had interacted with each other was when you’d waken him up because you had already landed at the airport. The both of you had barely spoken to each other even on your way to the hotel. Occasionally he’d ask you questions that only warranted monosyllabic responses from you.
You’re glad that weariness passed as the only excuse for the lack of interaction. The moment you’d met up at the airport, fatigue had already been evident in both your faces, so your pair had ended up with alternating sleeping schedules during the length of your flight and up to the taxi ride to your hotel.
Only a few words were shared between you when you’ve finally arrived in front of your rooms – something along the lines of ‘good night’ and ‘see you tomorrow’. As you let sleep take over you that night, you pray that everything will go smoothly for the entirety of your stay.
“Lovely afternoon to all of you present here today at this year’s Asian Gourmet Conference!” Excited applause falls amongst the crowd, cheering on different countries, even though they screamed the most for Team Philippines. The host greets the audience and the participants one more time, before proceeding to the guidelines of the event.
“For the first challenge of our main event, we’d like the chefs to cook two staple dishes from their respective home countries – but with a twist! Our chefs will have to use Filipino ingredients only! This is where we put their creativity and talent to the test. To our chefs, please be reminded that we will be giving you an hour to prepare your fusion dishes. While you guys are cooking, I’ll be going around to interview almost fifty chefs who have come from all parts of the world just to join us today.”
You start brainstorming with Seokjin the moment the host leaves the stage. “You’ve been to the Philippines a few times right? You’ve tried some of their food?” your partner asks, turning to you. You’re surprised he even remembered…if you had recalled properly, you had only mentioned it once back in Paris that you did visit the Philippines on occasion.
“Um, yes…I’ve been here a couple of times,” you reply, racking your brain for any Korean dishes that might hold any similarity with Korean staples. “I only remember Sinigang, and Adobe…”
“I’m pretty sure they call it Adobo here Seokjin,” you make no attempt to suppress the giggle the escapes your lips as he mistakes computer software for food.
“But the challenge is only to make our home country’s staples with Philippine ingredients… so this shouldn’t be that big of a fusion problem since rice is also considered a vital part of their meals here…”
“You think good ‘ole Bibimbap will do? Pretty much all the ingredients are available here…What else could we have?” Seokjin asks, taking a notepad and a pen from his jacket. “We can have tteokbokki for the appetizer and bingsu for dessert.”
You get to cooking right after you and Seokjin agree on the ingredients you were going to use. Maybe working with Seokjin wasn’t so bad after all. Not even fifteen minutes into the competition, you see a few girls cheer Seokjin on, ceaselessly calling your partner “Seokjin oppa!” They screams only seem to spur Seokjin on, who’s now showing off his knife skills. You roll your eyes as you shake your head, crushing the garlic a little too hard against the board.
“Jealous much?” your partner asks. You can feel Seokjin smirking beside you.
“You wish, Kim Seokjin.”
“Whatever floats your boat, ________,” he sighs, “If only my partner could also send me words of encouragement rather than staying silent the whole time,” he mumbles to himself, thinking it wasn’t loud enough for you to hear.
“You and I both know this mouth is better at something else.” You turn to him, giving Seokjin a playful wink before setting the ingredients to the bibimbap on one side. He nearly drops the knife he’s holding at your comment, obviously scandalized by your innuendo.
Even with the time racing against you, everything was still going as planned, you just needed to hurry with the final parts of the dishes and you’d be able to beat the buzzer which was bound to ring in less than twenty minutes. That is until the salt container placed on top of this tall arrangement of pots topples over the shaved ice you’ve prepared for the bingsu. You see the ice melt before your eyes, and you quickly move to the container, removing some of the ice that was turning into water.
“Shit! Sorry ________!” He drops the pans he held in his arms onto the sink, scampering to your side afterwards. “Can I help –“
“No! I…It’s fine, Seokjin, just…just go back to whatever you were doing earlier. And please be careful next time.” Seokjin nods curtly, before going back to clean the pans. “______, why does it smell like something’s burning?”
“Fuck!” Cursing under your breath, you hurry towards the pot where the rice was cooking. As you remove the cover, the smell of burnt rice and a failed dish wafts through your nose, causing you to take a deep breath as you attempt to calm yourself down.
Reluctantly, you scoop out the rice that wasn’t burnt and place it onto the stone pot and start plating your bibimbap. Seokjin likewise helps you finish plating the tteokbokki and bingsu in silence.
Needless to say, your burnt rice didn’t make it through the first round. It didn’t mean that you were disqualified from the competition though, but in order to win the cash prize, you will have to make it through all three challenges of the event. That same evening as you take the cab back to the hotel, the despondence in the air is thicker than ever.
“See you tomorrow, ______.” Seokjin says, giving you a small smile as he stops in front of his door.
“Right. See you tomorrow, Seokjin. Sleep well.”
It’s ironic how it was you who actually needed that phrase and not Seokjin. You’ve watched the clock tick away, turned on the television for something to watch on the local news channels which were thankfully spoken in English, you had also resorted to Netflix on your phone, but all to no avail.
Admittedly, you had finished an Iced Americano in fifteen minutes earlier this morning but you figure it’s the entire ‘burnt rice’ accident that’s keeping you awake at this hour. Heaving a deep sigh, you lift the covers off your body, put on a hoodie and headed outside.
You pause by Seokjin’s door momentarily, with the strong urge to knock on his door and apologize for your lack of professionalism earlier this afternoon. Seokjin didn’t really mean to pour the salt over the ice at the event, and the way you reacted was unnecessarily rude.
Seokjin was probably asleep though, and you didn’t want to further embarrass yourself by waking him in the middle of the night. Retracting your hand that was merely inches away from his door, you turn on your heel and decide to apologize to him first thing in the morning tomorrow. Maybe even get him an extra something to show the depth of your regret and guilt.
After having asked the receptionist for directions towards the nearest convenience store, you’re suddenly regretting having worn shorts on your way out – the exposed skin of your legs prickling as the chilly evening air bites at it. Spotting 7-Eleven just across the street, you walk quickly towards the convenience store, desperate to feel warmth in this cold night.
The mellifluous sound of the bell echoes throughout the small store as you enter, that particular smell of convenience stores wafting through your senses. You decide to explore the shop a little, trying to look for something to eat.
Quite ironically, you’ve cooked nearly a thousand dishes in your lifetime, and having to cook another shouldn’t be that much of a burden but when your mind is swirling with thoughts just like tonight, you can’t seem to bring yourself to cook even the simplest dish – like it’s too great of a task to burden yourself with.
So during times like this, you turn to instant noodles, the ultimate lifesaver since your culinary school days. Hopefully no one from GCAEA or the AGC finds you like this, a dignified gourmet chef who’s starting to establish her name in the culinary field, crawling convenience stores in the middle of the night and slurping instant noodles away like it’s her last day on Earth.
You finally get to the noodles section, where you see a man in a hoodie, likewise skimming through the same aisle as you. The receptionist had told you to be wary of sketchy-looking people especially during the wee hours of the morning so you hurry with your own search as you look for a certain brand of cup noodles. Shin Ramyeon.
It should be here somewhere… As far as you’re concerned as a consumer, it’s being exported to over a hundred countries now so it must be here. Going over the entire aisle one last time, you finally see the red cup, reaching over the lone cup of Shin Ramyeon left on the shelf. The problem was, you weren’t the only one who was reaching for it.
Why do those fingers look insanely familiar?
Your eyes widen gradually as you slowly trail them up to see the owner of those hands. Of course, who else could it have been? You call out each other’s name at the same time.
“Seokjin.” “________.”
“You can have it.” You spoke in unison again.
“It’s fine really, you can have it. I’ll just look for another brand,” you tell him, handing over the cup with perfectly controlled reluctance.
“Would you mind if we shared, perhaps?” You stare at him, completely taken aback by his offer. “Or not…I mean- forget I even said that… Here take it.” He hands the cup to you and starts to leave.
“Jin! I- I don’t mind sharing.” Biting on his lip, he attempts to hide the smile that slowly etches into his face as he hears the nickname only you have for him. He turns to face you again. “Okay.” Seokjin gives you a smile, grabs the cup noodles from your grasp and orders you to look for seats while he pays for your shared midnight snack.
Slowly, you trudge towards the limited number of seats they offer at the convenience store and find a spot by the windows. Seokjin arrives at your table a couple of minutes afterwards.
It was now or never. You owed Seokjin an apology after having rudely declined his offer of help during the event, even when the whole fiasco was just an accident. You figure if you don’t apologize for your unjust behavior, guilt is most likely going to eat at you for a very, very long time. Seokjin’s dejected yet still beautiful face will haunt you in your dreams.
As Seokjin busies himself with adding the ingredients onto the paper cup, you take this opportunity to speak up. “Jin,” you start, the nickname sending Seokjin’s heart into another frenzy. “About the bibimbap earlier, I’m sorry.”
“You don’t have to apologize, ________. It was my fault anyway. I should be the one apologizing right now, but…hold that thought for a moment…” He looks away, letting out a sneeze. “….it’s the powder seasoning, sorry… As I was saying, I’d also like to apologize about what happened earlier, I mean if I didn’t try to carry so much, the salt wouldn’t have toppled over.”
“Hey! I should be the one apologizing right now! Stop stealing my thunder!” You pout, begrudgingly taking the small carton of milk Seokjin bought to go with the ramen. You can’t say you aren’t pleasantly surprised at how he remembers this habit of yours too. For some reason, he remembers how you always have milk ready whenever you eat something spicy.
“Anyways… I also wanted to apologize for my rude behavior towards you back at the event. It was an accident, yet I reacted badly and declined your assistance. It was only after the event that I realized that we’re supposed to be helping each other, and not treating each other poorly.”
“Don’t worry yourself too much about it, ______. Besides, we still have two days to redeem ourselves right?” Seokjin sends a warm smile your way, one you cannot help but return.
“What else are you waiting for? The ramen is getting cold and lonely.”
“You sure you aren’t talking about yourself?”
“You know, I’m thinking maybe you should get your own instant noodles,” Seokjin comments, fingers curling around the paper cup.
“Okay, okay, geez.” Throwing your hands up in defense, you thank him for paying for the noodles and the milk before pulling your chopsticks apart and digging in. As you take your first bite, Seokjin suddenly speaks up.
“Is it just me, or I am really very anxious right now…what if someone might see us?”
“Last time I checked, there’s nothing wrong with eating inside a convenience store.”
“No, no. But we’re like… owners…of restaurants…that serve gourmet food…yet here we are, at half past twelve in the morning, sharing cup noodles like it’s the last meal in the world due to a zombie apocalypse.”
“I get how you feel, but I don’t think we’d agree on the zombie apocalypse part…”
The conversation flows naturally between the both of you, like two friends casually catching up with each other’s lives. Seokjin was in the middle of talking when you hear the pitter-patter of rain outside. Tiny droplets of water slide down the glass panels, slowly turning into heavier ones.
You look at each other. “Should we?”
“We can wait this out if you’d like…” Seokjin proposes, though he isn’t so sure he wants to go with his offer either. The sudden downpour doesn’t seem like it was going to stop anytime soon. “Forget what I said, we should leave before this gets worse. Wait here.” Seokjin stands up,  goes through each aisle of the convenience store, and returns to where you’re seated. “Damn, they just ran out of umbrellas.”
“We could just run back the hotel…it’s just one crosswalk away.”
“You sure about that? What if you get sick?”
“Let’s just hope we won’t then.” Seokjin gives you a nod in approval. “Before we go out though,” he pulls his hoodie off his torso, giving you a slight show of his abdominals as he raises his hands. You abruptly look away, before nasty thoughts overcome you.
Placing his hoodie over both your heads, Seokjin peers down at you. “Ready when you are.” The quick sprint back to the hotel has you both screaming and laughing at the same time. You weren’t surprised that Seokjin’s hoodie barely served its purpose. You were both drenched from the neck down, attracting unwanted attention from people with your appearance.
Tumblr media
With less than a few more steps before you reach your hotel rooms, you feel trepidation bubbling in the pit of your stomach. What’s going to happen now? Were you supposed to forget what happened between the two of you three years ago just like that? Was your midnight ramen run officially a clean slate?
Seokjin has his back facing you, the thin, white material of his shirt clinging sinfully to his skin. Every second spent with Seokjin was the best form of punishment in both ways “Are you going to sleep?” You don’t think that was going to happen anytime soon, now that you’re once again blessed with his visuals and perfectly sculpted body.
Seokjin turns to face you, waiting for your response. You shake your head no, eyes unabashedly staring at the outline of his six-pack. The man lets out a cough, drawing you out of your reverie. “Wanna keep warm for a bit and talk over hot chocolate?”
Why do you get the feeling it’s not just hot chocolate that’s going to keep you warm tonight?
“Sure.” Your voice comes out small, swallowing loudly as he unlocks the door to his room.
The tension in the air is so thick that you’re actually having difficulty trying to breathe normally. Seokjin sets his wet hoodie on the floor before meeting your eyes, pupils already dilated. He momentarily holds his stare, eyes raking all over your equally drenched body. He points a finger sideways, “Hot chocolate.” Subconsciously chewing on your bottom lip, you nod, unable to form any coherent words in your head.
As he heads towards the kitchenette, you rub your face with your hands, before placing a hand over your chest. “Calm down, girl. It’s not like you’ve never seen abs before.” This is like Paris all over again, and you weigh the possible outcome of this situation. If you’re reading the signs right, Seokjin is clearly just affected as you are. Are you really willing to wear your heart out on your sleeve like this one more time? You rack your brain for answers, yet all it does is betray you with images of the rippling muscles underneath Seokjin’s shirt.
Ah, fuck it.
“Jin?” you call out as you reach the wall separating the kitchenette. Just as you peek through the divider, Seokjin rakes a hand through his temple, his hair now pushed back and forehead visible. You practically hear your resolve shattering into pieces.
Taking initiative, you close the distance between the both of you, connecting your lips with his in a feverish kiss. He tastes spicy – just like the ramen you’ve shared just minutes ago, but god, your favorite ramen and Seokjin’s lips; if that ain’t the hottest combination in the world – both literally, and figuratively.
You kiss Seokjin fervently like you’re going to crumble if his lips aren’t connected with yours. One hand of his raises to get rid of the scrunchie holding your hair up in a ponytail, and he lets his fingers card through your wet hair gently. The intensity of his kiss practically devours you, his hands grabbing hastily at your clothes. He’s itching to take them off your body, yet you feel the hesitation in his actions, waiting for that sign from you before he can do so as he pleases.
Pulling away to take a breather, you tug your hoodie up and off you, with Seokjin helping you with the task. "You don’t know how much I’ve longed for this, fuck." He seizes your mouth with his once more like a man starved.
Seokjin groans as he finally gets a view of the amount of lace you’re wearing underneath your hoodie. “I’d love to have you in your lingerie another time, but for now, let’s get you naked for me, hmm?” You’re barely allowed a second to fully comprehend his statement about lingerie and another time before Seokjin discards of the red lacy bra you have on and attaching his lips to one of your nipples.
Gasping at the sensation, you arch your back so that you’re practically pressing your chest against his face, greedily asking for more. Hooking a finger inside the waistband of your gym shorts, Seokjin easily tugs your shorts down along with your underwear.
He grabs you by the waist and lifts you up to the counter for his convenience. You shiver slightly when your ass comes in contact with the coldness of the marble. As if on instinct, your legs spread wider, seemingly inviting him to come closer to you.
“You’re so fucking hot, you know that?”
“Mhmmm,” your words are muffled as you ardently kiss him. Seokjin brings his lips back to your breasts, biting and pulling at one while the other gets kneaded under his palm. Equally just as impatient as you are, Seokjin lets a hand trail in between your bodies, tentatively brushing against your core to gauge your reaction.
Your body quakes in anticipation, and Seokjin teases you even further by slowly rubbing the pad of his finger on your clit. “Jin, please,” you beseech. “Gotta prepare you first, baby girl.” Letting your head fall back at the sensation (and the pet name!), Seokjin decides to give you what you want, seeing as though you were wet enough that taking his cock right now won’t be a problem. He finally slides a finger inside, your body trembling at the intrusion. God, it’s been too long.
Okay, honestly speaking, you really didn’t take interest in another man when Seokjin entered your life three years ago, and now that you’re back here in this compromising situation with his finger sliding in and out of you languidly, you feel like you could just cum at the thought of it alone.
Seokjin adds another finger, continuing the pace. You moan wantonly as Seokjin curls his fingers, your velvety walls clenching around his digits. He can tell you’re getting close, but he knew it wasn’t enough.
Without having to slide his fingers out of you, Seokjin grabs at one of the chairs and pulls it towards himself so he can sit.
He hooks his arms under your thighs and pulls you closer, merely centimeters away from your cunt. Your cheeks are set ablaze at his brazen action, opening your mouth to say something, falling speechless yet again as Seokjin’s lips come in contact with your nether lips. The man licks a bold stripe along the length of your folds, your hands instantly finding purchase on his hair as you’ve got nothing else to hold on to. He repeats the action all over again, this time adding his fingers to slide in and out of you and toy with your clit. A few more licks and a particular curl of his digits, Seokjin makes you cum for the first time again in three years, so hard that you’re body’s trembling even after he sets your legs down
You’re breathing heavily, resting your forehead on Seokjin’s temple. “Mind taking a shower with me? It’s important to bathe after running the rain” Seokjin looks up at you, eyes pleading.
“I would, if I’m still able to walk.”
“Who said you were going to walk?” Seokjin maneuvers you on top of the counter, placing his hands under your knees and on your back, carrying you bridal style towards the bath. As soon as he settles you down onto the tub, he turns the faucet on and leaves you there for a moment, telling you that he was just going to grab something from his luggage.
You rest your head against the edge of the tub as you wait for Seokjin. You slowly feel exhaustion taking over you, but when you hear Seokjin’s muted footsteps against the carpeted floor, your eyes pry open only to see Seokjin in his boxers, holding a bath bomb in his palm. You gulp. This was going to be one hell of a night.
Just like before, Seokjin has you cumming thrice in the bath, once when he took you from underneath, making sure that the water fell perfectly on your clit for added stimulation as he slid his length in and out of you. He’d made you cum when you rode him as well, water sloshing everywhere at your naughty shenanigans in the bath. Even after two orgasms, Seokjin just won’t quit, having bent you over as you faced the wall, pounding you from behind.
Seokjin, with his libido seemingly running 24/7 tells you he wasn’t done with you just yet, saying he’s still got three years worth more of fucking to give you. He wanted to give you the most unforgettable sex of your life, and boy, was he adamant about it.
Seemingly not having had enough of you yet after helping you scrub almost the whole expanse of your skin, he finds himself getting hard again at the sight of you in just his shirt and nothing else.  You meant to sleep by that time, but as soon as Seokjin spooned you, you’d felt his clothed erection already grinding against your ass. You no longer kept count of how many times he made you cum.
The sunlight peeks through a tiny slit through the curtains, the heat perfectly hitting your face, causing you to wake up. Your body is sore all over, and as you roll to the other side while stretching out your limbs, you spot next to you empty.
Of course. You’re a fucking dumbass.
Hastily grabbing your clothes strewn across the floor, you head out of his room, tears already brimming in your eyes. Your vision is getting blurry by the second, and you angrily swipe at your cheeks as you feel a singular tear roll down. As you curse Seokjin under your breath, you bump into none other than the devil himself. “Oh! You’re awake?”
You don’t answer, stepping aside so you could go back to your room and rethink your life decisions.
“Where are you going, _______?”
“Out of your room, and hopefully out of your life as well.”
“Wait - ______! What are you talking about?” Seokjin extends his hand to grab your arm.
“Don’t fucking touch me, Seokjin.” The venom laced with your words makes him reel, retracting the arm he had held out to reach you. “I really never meant anything to you, hm? Fuck, I have probably reached desperation to return back into your arms that easily.”
“Desperation? That’s all it was last night? And the one three years ago?”
“I should be the one asking you that question!”
“What?”
“What do you mean ‘what’? Are you really that fucking dense, Seokjin? You were the one who left me alone in the room that morning, and now you’ve done it again. Congratulations on having a new notch on your belt. And I’m a fucking fool for even thinking you felt otherwise!”
“You think I left you that morning?”
“I’m not done yet—what did you say?”
“You were the one who left that morning!”
“I did not! When I woke up, you weren’t there, nor were you anywhere inside your entire apartment! Do you know how embarrassing that was!” You pause, lips trembling, “F-For someone who actually meant something to you only seeing you as just some one-night stand?! Someone who you could use to get your dick wet?!”
“You like m-“
“You’re missing the entire point here, Kim Seokjin!”
“What’s happening here?” A raspy voice asks, the familiar mop of curly hair coming into view. Rafa?
“Oh my god! You like me, fuck! I could just kiss you right now!” Seokjin doesn’t even hesistate, already leaning towards your face and connecting your lips. You almost melt into his arms at the sensation, but you pull away just as instantly, tears freely rolling down. “Am I really just a joke to you, Jin? Have you ever even taken into consideration my feelings, even once?”
“______, darling. This is all a misunderstanding. Well, I did leave that morning, but I just went out to Rafa next door to shower. I—you looked so peaceful as you slept that I really didn’t want to bother waking you up to tell you that I can’t shower with cold water and it’s like déjà vu all of a sudden and…wait!” Seokjin drags poor Rafael who’s still looks like he’s half-asleep. “Rafa can verify the truth!”
Rafael sighs, once again caught in the middle of something he no longer wants to be a part of. “It’s true, ______. This guy’s pretty much in love with you. It’s just an unfortunate fact that this same guy has plenty of annoying habits that gets him in trouble most times. Just like not being able handle water that is below 26 degrees Celsius.”
You’re looking back and forth Seokjin and Rafa, trying to study their features if they’re being questionable or not. Finding no trace of mirth in their eyes, you turn to Seokjin. “You really didn’t leave me that morning and… today?”
“No. I could never. I’m a fucking dumbass for not thinking about what you could’ve felt that time and today…or telling you that I was just heading out to Rafa’s to shower because for some reason my heater isn’t always functioning…”
“Glad to know you’ve finally acknowledged that you’re a bloody idiot.” Rafa speaks up, narrowing his eyes at Seokjin, taking a sip from his mug. Since when was that in his hands? Rafa sees you stare at his mug, and answers your silent question, “Was planning to drink this while it was hot earlier but I don’t see anything wrong with drinking cold coffee while watching a live action soap opera.”
“Funny how a night of fucking like wild rabbits can do so much to people,” Rafa adds, scoffing as he retreats back to his room. You lean your head towards Seokjin’s chest, embarrassed out of your wits. Seokjin puts an arm around your shoulder pulling you closer to him. “Don’t mind Rafa. He’s just jealous.”
“I can perfectly hear you, Kim Seokjin!”
spun sugar (written for the ironstrange fanfic challenge)
Summary: He didn’t feel like going out, but he needed a distraction. Nothing would be able to take his mind off of the phone call he was waiting for, the call he knew would never come. Not even a double date to the carnival with Anthony, Hope, and Christine kept him focused today, and he was actually starting to need a distraction from his distraction.
a/n: just a heads up that this fic is on the heavier side of angsty so please be careful and safe! tw: for homophobia/mentioned use of slurs, outing, death (drowning), and family issues, and i think that’s it
Today felt like the world’s longest deja vu episode. It felt like standing in line at a carnival for hours, only to spin endlessly on one of those teacup rides. Everything was an unbreakable cycle of doubt, confusion, anger, and the old familiar self loathing. So for Stephen, it was just Thursday.
She didn’t forget.
She probably forgot!
She didn’t forget. She didn’t call on purpose.
She knows what today is.
She doesn’t want to talk to me.
I don’t want to talk to her either, and yet I still wish she’d call. Maybe then I could pretend that things are sort of okay.
Stephen sighed, completely tuning out his professor. He hadn’t been paying attention all class and wasn’t going to start now. There were more important things to be thinking about, like the nap he was going to take when he got home, or the fact that it was Victor’s birthday.
It was Victor’s birthday, and Stephen wanted to plan some sort of surprise call and later invite his brother to visit him in the city. Eugene immediately took to the idea and offered to help plan it and reach out to more of the family, but there was a catch. Of course Beverly had to be involved in some capacity. Even if she didn’t want to be associated with her older son, her younger one was near and dear to her heart and she wouldn’t hesitate to do anything for him. Except this, apparently, because that would involve speaking to Stephen. The med student didn’t expect to hear back from his mother and truthfully never expected a lot from her generally, but his hopes were still up.
Waste of time. She doesn’t need me.
She doesn’t even want me.
Stephen checked the time again. His lecture would be over in 15 minutes, and the next one started in half an hour. That gave him enough time to grab a coffee and call his dad on the walk across campus, and to make the time pass now he’d organize his inbox.
Most of his messages weren’t surprising (they were mainly just calendar invites and the occasional email from Anthony with an article Stephen might like) or even worth reading, but Stephen was a bit surprised when Eugene called him first. He had a solid relationship with his dad, but it was still unfamiliar for Stephen to have his family approach him first. Usually it went the other way around.
“I was just about to call you,” he said. “What’s going on? Mom never told me when the family call is”
“That’s the bad news,” Eugene replied. “Your mom changed the plan.”
“So she shut me out? Again? Is that what I’m supposed to understand?” Stephen asked, his voice cracking like the thinnest sheet of winter ice under heavy footfalls. “I didn’t do anything.”
Eugene sighed. “I’m sorry.” That was all the confirmation Stephen needed.
“What happened?” He asked. “She would do anything to make Victor happy, even if it means acknowledging me as part of the family.”
“Which you are,” Eugene argued.
“Not according to Mom, and you know that,” Stephen replied. “Please just tell me what happened, my next class starts soon.”
“Your aunt called to wish Victor a happy birthday and then was chatting with your mom about the family, as they do. I think she asked your mom how you were doing and how your love life in school was going, but at that point I wasn’t really listening. You know that your aunt is one of my few in-laws I actually tolerate, maybe even like, and today she proved exactly why. Claudia said something about you, and based on your mom’s reaction it wasn’t what she wanted to hear,” Eugene explained. “She knows you’re gay and is really happy for you, against your mom’s expectations and wishes that she’d be ashamed.”
“That was the first time they’ve talked about my sexuality, right? Because I never came out to her. I assume Maxwell brought it up for some reason because I came out to him years ago. Why he’d bring it up now, I don’t know,” Stephen replied.
“As far as I know, this is the first time Claudia brought it up. I assume if they’d talked about it before, your mother would’ve gotten angry or cut her off. She wasn’t happy today,” Eugene said bluntly. It wouldn’t do any good to sugarcoat the truth when Stephen already knew all of this.
“Great! Mom’s already mad enough at me for coming out and being proud of myself. I bet I ruined her relationship with Aunt Claudia because I blabbed and Maxwell clearly takes after Mom since he outed me for no reason!” Stephen snapped. He took a deep breath, his head spinning. “Sorry for yelling, Dad.”
“I don’t need you to apologize. You have every right to be hurt, for a lot of reasons,” Eugene said. “But to make a long story short, she told me flat out that she wouldn’t be talking to you today and then left for work at the same time she always does.”
“Can I talk to Victor at least? I don’t care if she doesn’t want to talk to me, but I can’t ignore him,” Stephen pleaded. “I can’t not be there for him on his birthday, that’s cruel!”
“I know you want to be there for your brother, it’s okay. That’s the good news and why I called you. Give me a minute,” Eugene replied.
Stephen mumbled some kind of response, slowly but impatiently shifting his weight from side to side. He was thinking about blowing off the rest of his classes for the day, emotional exhaustion overtaking him. He could usually power through things like this, as he was used to his mother steadfastly refusing to accept him. Today she and her hatred actively prevented Stephen from wishing his little brother a happy birthday, and that was too damn much. The fact that his cousin suddenly outed him almost three years after Stephen came out was only making him angrier. Stephen always tried to do the best that he could for his family, especially his younger sibling(s), and was even more protective of Victor in the wake of Donna’s death. All he wanted was to look after everyone he cared about, and his sexuality didn’t negatively affect his protective oldest child instincts. If anything it made them stronger because Stephen always wanted to be an ally for his siblings. He would always stand up for them when they needed.
Sometimes he felt like he failed Donna, despite his best efforts to keep her safe and make her happy. Stephen couldn’t fail Victor and let their mother’s actions come between them. He wouldn’t. He looked at his phone to distract himself, editing his coffee order to include a latte for Anthony. He was usually home around this time and would more than likely appreciate the surprise coffee.
Thinking of his boyfriend, the love of his life and his person, made Stephen smile just enough to prevent him from sobbing in the middle of Starbucks.
Two (2) minutes that felt like an eternity later, Victor came to the phone. “Hello?”
“Happy birthday Vic!” Stephen forced a smile, hoping some cheer could be detected in his voice.
“Thank you,” Victor replied with an emotion that Stephen couldn’t place.
“Sorry I couldn’t be there today or join the family call. I wanted to be part of the call at least, but…”
“It’s okay. I know you care, and I know you wouldn’t forget my birthday just because you’re busy.”
“Right… busy!” Stephen’s laugh was forced. “I would never miss your birthday, and not just because I have a flawless memory.”
“I was just starting to miss you until you said that. Damn shame.”
“Not only is today your birthday, it’s apparently also the start of you acting like the smartass you‘ve grown up to be,” Stephen quipped. Eugene’s noisy laughter could be heard even over the phone.
“I didn’t come into this world as a smartass like you. I had to learn from you, unfortunately,” Victor replied. “And I’m glad to see you’re amused, Dad!”
“I taught you everything I know, and this is how you thank me?” Stephen asked.
The barista called out Stephen’s order.
“Hey I have to get going, but you and Dad should come visit me in New York sometime soon,” Stephen offered.
“That sounds nice, but you can also just call me. Contrary to popular belief I do want to talk to you on days that aren’t holidays,” Victor replied. “But New York sounds fun.”
I wish we could talk whenever, like we used to when I was welcome under her roof.
“I want to go to the city, I’m sick of the neighbors,” Eugene added. “We’ll have to plan a trip, but for now we’ll let you get ready for class.”
“Thanks Dad. Love you both, and I hope you have a great birthday, Vic!” Stephen hung up before they could reply, grabbed his coffees, and dragged his feet the rest of the way home.
Anthony was in the kitchen, serenely flipping through a magazine and eating lunch when Stephen trudged in. He paid no mind to the door opening at first, dipping his grilled cheese into the steaming cup of soup beside him and continuing to peruse the pages.
Stephen smiled fondly at the sight of him, the tiniest bit of joy finding its way to his heart.
“I got you a latte,” Stephen said, setting both drinks on the counter.
Anthony gasped, curiously ignoring the coffee completely and standing up to hug Stephen. “Thank you cuore mio.”
“I figured I’d surprise you since I’m home early,” Stephen replied. He relaxed into the hug, slouching in Anthony’s arms.
“I appreciate that, but I’m much happier to see you. We both left at weird times this morning so we didn’t get to talk and get ready for the day together like we usually do,” Anthony said, a little pout on his face.
“Well we’re both home now, and I’m really tired.” Stephen was beyond tired and beyond annoyed, swaying a bit in Anthony’s arms.
Anthony hugged him closer and tighter to steady him. “Let’s go sit. Did you have lunch?”
“No, I just got coffee and came right home,” Stephen replied.
Anthony handed over the other half of his sandwich. “Take this then, I just made it. There’s tomato soup too, since Bucky made me go to Panera with him earlier.”
Stephen was about to object, stopping himself only when he saw the mirthful light in Anthony’s eyes. “What?”
“I mean I don’t mind either way, but I’m giving this to you so you don’t swipe it from me like the mischievous, overgrown British shorthair you are,” Anthony teased. “You’re not subtle.”
“If I was a cat, we both know I’d be a calico,” Stephen replied.
“I disagree. What are you doing for the rest of the afternoon?” Anthony asked.
Stephen shrugged. “I kind of want to nap. Preferably with you, under a blanket, and in front of the fireplace.”
“That sounds nice,” Anthony murmured, reaching up to softly caress Stephen’s cheek. “Let’s go, then.”
As soon as they were settled, Stephen rested his head on Anthony’s shoulder and practically melted into his side.
They made idle chatter and finished their lunch, Stephen glancing at his phone every now and then.
It’s stupid to hope something will change.
He knew his mom wasn’t going to call him, and that still stung no matter how much he tried to move past it. Stephen also knew she wouldn’t ever accept him again, and she’d continue to use his identity against the rest of the family who he loved and who loved him in return. Be it immediate family or the most distant relatives, Beverly was determined to exile him completely, erasing her oldest son from the family story.
Victor probably suffered the most from this, aside from obviously Stephen himself. Contrary to what their mother thought, Victor deserved to talk to whoever he wanted on his birthday, including Stephen. Being the middle child, Victor was the link between cautious Stephen and carefree Donna. The three siblings were incredibly close growing up, and their sister’s death took as much of a toll on Victor as it did on Stephen. Stephen almost left home for good a few days after Donna’s funeral, almost leaving his little brother behind. It was impossible to forget anything about that day.
Stephen knocked on his brother’s door.
“It’s open!” Victor was sitting on the floor building a Lego castle.
Stephen sat on the floor across from him. “This looks really good, Vic!”
“Do you want to help me finish it?” Victor asked.
“I can’t today. I actually came in to tell you that I might be leaving home for a little bit,” Stephen replied. He rested his head on one of his hands.
“When do you leave?” Victor asked, still not looking at him.
“Tonight or early tomorrow. I’m going to New York to help Anthony move,” Stephen said, making up a reason as he finished answering. It was true that he was going to New York to see Anthony, but he couldn’t tell Victor the real reason why. He’d already been through enough the past few days, he didn’t need to know that Stephen and Beverly weren’t on speaking terms as of today. He didn’t need to know that their mother was trying to kick Stephen out.
Victor just sat quietly and nodded, not registering his brother’s distress. “So you have time to help me build then. Can you hand me that brick, please?”
Stephen smiled sadly and obliged.
They were quiet, just working together like nothing was wrong until an overwhelming clamor filled the farmhouse.
“Dad’s home,” Stephen remarked.
“Are he and mom arguing?” Victor asked. “Why?”
Stephen knew why, but he held his tongue and just shrugged. “I’m not sure.”
Victor nodded and went back to building. “Make sure you follow the directions, I want this to be perfect.”
They continued to work diligently, not saying much to each other but listening to the argument from the kitchen. It wasn’t easy to make out what Mr. and Mrs. Strange were saying, but their mutual anger hung in the air long after the conversation ended. The whole house felt different, its welcoming energy replaced with something sinister.
And then someone knocked on the door. “Boys?”
“Hi Dad!” Victor said. “You can come in, Stephen is helping me build the castle set that you gave me!”
Eugene walked in, standing in the doorway and watching his sons work for a minute. “Stephen, can I talk with you for a minute? Sorry to tear you away from your building, but you can finish up later. I also brought home dinner. Victor, go eat with Mom before it gets cold.”
“Cool, thanks Dad!” Victor stepped cautiously over his castle and headed downstairs.
Stephen was still on the floor, Eugene sitting at Victor’s desk. He didn’t know what this conversation was going to be like, and fear made him snatch the first words without giving them much thought.“Dad, I fucked up.”
“I’m going to be honest, I don’t see it that way,” Eugene said.
Stephen had been staring at the carpet until then, looking sharply up at his father. “What?”
“I said I don’t see it that way. You didn’t mess up,” Eugene repeated himself.
“Mom wants me to go,” Stephen mumbled. He hung his head again, looking at the carpet. Victor’s room was the only carpeted one in the house, and no one knew why.
“Your mother also wants me to stop leaving my computer in the dining room since that’s apparently ‘her space,’ but last I checked this is our home and she doesn’t have a monopoly on that room,” Eugene replied.
Stephen was quiet for a minute. “She says it’s not my home. Not anymore, anyway.”
“That’s what we were arguing about,” Eugene said. “I came home from work and she told me what you talked about and how she felt. I don’t agree with her.”
“I wanted to tell you myself,” Stephen muttered. “She had no right to tell you, that’s not what you’re supposed to do!”
Eugene didn’t say anything, unsure of what he  could say to make this better.
“I didn’t time this well, I know, and I’m sorry. I should’ve given Mom more time to process losing Donna, and—”
“Stephen, I think your mother would’ve responded the same way if your sister was here. It’s nothing to do with the circumstances and everything to do with her,” Eugene said.
Stephen nodded slowly. “Are you upset with me Dad?”
“No I’m not, and I don’t think you should go,” Eugene replied.
“I probably should, for a few days,” Stephen said. “Anthony’s in New York, and I know I just saw him but I wanted to go visit again before he leaves for boarding school.”
Eugene nodded. “As long as you’re back at least a day before your school year starts.”
“Mom isn’t going to want me to come back, but I don’t want to leave Victor! I can’t abandon him!” Stephen said.
Eugene shook his head. “It’s not up to her. You’re our son, mine and hers equally, and I want you to be home with us while you finish high school. Besides, you and Victor need each other especially now. Your mom isn’t the only one who decides what family means. You are both our sons, and though our family might be a little smaller, we’re still family.” Eugene grabbed a box of tissues from Victor’s desk, handing them to Stephen as he began to cry.
“Thanks Dad.”
“It’s going to be okay. What day are you planning on going to New York?”
“I booked a flight for early tomorrow morning, Ant said anytime in the afternoon he’d be around.”
“And are you going to finally stop pining for each other and tell him how you feel while you’re there?”
“Dad!” Stephen hesitated before continuing. This was unfamiliar territory, discussing his love life with his father. Eugene knew Anthony and could obviously tell how Stephen felt, but it was weird to talk about this. Still, curiosity got the better of him. “Do you think I should?”
To make a long story short, that’s how they ended up here, in the apartment they shared with three of their friends while Anthony repeatedly nudged Stephen with his elbow.
“What do you want?” Stephen muttered, failing to even pretend like he was annoyed.
“Scoot over so I can go to the kitchen!” Anthony said, the slightest hint of a whine in his voice.
Stephen shifted and grumbled a little protest as he stood up.
Anthony smiled and kissed the top of his head. “I’ll be right back, then you can cling to me as much as you want.”
Stephen sighed, half in teasing exasperation, and looked at his phone again. He was staring daggers at it when Anthony returned, letting it go when he was pulled into a hug.
“Did you hear back from her yet? What time is the call?” Anthony asked gently, beginning to stroke Stephen’s hair.
“She hasn’t called yet.” That wasn’t a lie, but Stephen was too upset to give Anthony more details right now.
Anthony hummed, kissing his head again. “She will.”
“I don’t— yeah. She will,” Stephen mumbled. Also not a lie, as he was still clinging to the thinnest shred of hope that his mom would change her mind.
She won’t.
It doesn’t matter how much she loves Victor and values his happiness, I’m dead to her and that’s final.
“How was your day?” Stephen asked, eager if not desperate to change the subject. “Did you present the business plan you were telling me about? How did it go?”
“I did! Honestly it went really well, I wasn’t nervous like I usually am,” Anthony replied.
Stephen yawned. “I’m so happy for you. Every time you practiced presenting it to me, you were amazing.” He was physically and mentally weary, exhaustion dragging him into a midnight blue haze, but he was never too tired to give Anthony the praise he deserved.
“Thank you,” Anthony murmured. His eyes were closed, but Stephen could practically hear Anthony’s soft smile.
“I mean it,” Stephen said. “Love you.”
He was surrendering to the exhaustion, to the warmth of the fire and the blanket and Anthony’s embrace. Sometimes knowing that Anthony loved him and feeling the manifestations of his love made Stephen feel a little better. This was reprieve, and he was going to revel in it until reality came back to kick his ass.
Anthony still sounded like he was smiling. “I love you too. Get some rest sleepyhead.”
++++
Anthony woke up first, his phone ringing loudly from the carpet below. He was going to just ignore it, mistaking the notification for an alarm, until he came to his senses a little more and realized Christine was calling.
“Your boyfriend is bad at answering his phone,” she’d said.
“Hello to you too, Christine. He’s sleeping,” Anthony replied. “We both were, actually.”
“So sorry to have interrupted your mid afternoon nap,” Christine drawled. “But I’m glad you were resting. Stephen seemed really off today during class, and as much as I hate to admit it I was a bit worried.”
“You’re too much of a helicopter parent friend to pretend like you’re not concerned,” Anthony said. “I can see right through that.”
Christine just laughed. “Anyway, I know you could talk about Stephen for probably years but I called for a reason.”
“What’s up?” Anthony asked. Stephen was still asleep in his arms, and Anthony tried his best not to disturb him. “Everything okay?”
“Oh yeah I’m fine! I was just gonna ask if you two wanted to go on a double date with me and Hope later? It’s the first night of the carnival,” Christine said. “Sam and Bucky aren’t planning on going until tomorrow because they’re boring, and we want an adventure.”
“Going out on a Thursday night counts as an adventure?” Anthony asked.
“Why wouldn’t it?!” Christine protested. “Let me know what you decide to do and just text me or Hope, we can plan to meet up later. I take it Stephen isn’t going to class but I am, so I’ll talk to you later.”
“Sounds good, bye Christine!” Anthony rolled his eyes in amusement, opening a game on his phone and holding Stephen closer.
It wasn’t more than twenty minutes later when he woke up, checking his phone and trying to hide his disappointment when his mom didn’t call.
What did I expect? She made up her mind.
She doesn’t want to talk to me.
Why am I pretending she cares, hoping she’ll call?
Stephen huffed out a sigh, more angry with himself than anything else.
“Nothing yet?” Anthony asked gently.
“No,” Stephen replied. He felt anger boiling in his system, unease taking over as he continued to lie and hope that something would change.
“I’m sorry,” Anthony said. “The day is still young.”
“I guess that’s true.” Stephen didn’t know if going along with what Anthony said was helping or hurting at this point. “I have a ton of missed calls from Christine though.”
“Oh yeah, she invited us on a double date with her and Hope since it’s the first night of the carnival,” Anthony replied. “You in?”
“Not really.” Stephen answered without even giving it much thought.
“Okay.” Anthony was always so amenable, sensitive, and empathetic, even at the expense of what he wanted. Sometimes Stephen’s heart ached at how selfless Anthony was and how much he cared for people. It was a privilege to be someone Anthony loved, but Stephen had to remind him constantly that relationships were a give and take. He didn’t want to drain Anthony’s kindness, not the way people in his past did. He wanted and tried to be as giving and loving to Anthony as Anthony was to him.
He didn’t even sound upset about not going out, but Stephen’s anxiety kicked in and convinced him otherwise. “Well wait Ant, what do you want to do?”
“It might be fun, but—”
“Why not go, then?”
Anthony was stunned by how fast Stephen changed his mind, trying to read his face for things his words left unsaid. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine… just a little jittery waiting for this stupid call. A distraction might help, and you’re right! It probably will be fun. Plus I don’t want to selfishly keep you from being out with friends, that’s not fair to you.”
“Nope, you stop that right now,” Anthony admonished gently. “If I wanted to go with our friends, I would. I want to spend time with you tonight, whatever that looks like, and we’re both allowed to want things. They don’t have to be the same thing, and you’re not selfish or controlling for disagreeing with me. Believe me?”
“I wish I could, because I know you mean it. I just feel like a failure since I can’t be there for Victor the way I want,” Stephen replied. “And I know it’s not my fault, but…”
“But it still hurts.” Anthony gently cupped his face and leaned in to kiss him. “Right?”
Stephen nodded, whispering a pained “yes,” into the kiss. It hurt more than Anthony knew, more than he was ready to discuss.
“You’re not a failure. You’re just trying to make everyone happy even when the most fucked up circumstances  get in the way. It’s not a bad thing to prioritize yourself, and in fact it’s a good thing to give yourself the kindness you give to others. You have to,” Anthony said, protectively wrapping his arms around Stephen.
“I’m glad you listen to my advice enough to repeat it back to me, at the very least,” Stephen quipped.
“Yeah yeah, I know I sound like a hypocrite since I—”
“Since you’re not nice to yourself, even though you deserve to be,” Stephen finished his sentence. “I just want to be able to make someone happy today. I want to make you happy.”
Anthony smiled sadly and kissed him again. “I love you so much, you idiot. You always make me happy, and I’m always here for you.”
“I know you are. I love you too,” Stephen replied. “A distraction honestly might help me deal with the waiting game, though.”
“It could!” Anthony nodded, playfully adding, “I’ll make it worth your while.”
“Oh yeah? How?” Stephen played along.
“We can start by getting your favorite sushi,” Anthony offered.
Stephen genuinely smiled at that, attempting to hide it by burying his head in Anthony’s shoulder. “Really?”
“Why not?” Anthony replied. “It’s been awhile since we went to that restaurant anyway.”
“It’s been too long,” Stephen corrected him. “I’m not sure if I’m feeling up to being out for dinner and then going out later, though. I feel bad because you’re trying so hard to plan something fun, and—”
“You don’t have to feel bad. It’s not a problem, we can just order in and stay home until later. That’s what I was planning anyway,” Anthony said. “And if you don’t feel like going out tonight, we really don’t have to.”
“I want to, but I also don’t,” Stephen said. “You know what I mean?”
Anthony nodded. “Yeah, I do. I’m fine with whatever though, it’s up to you.”
“Let’s go then. I’m still kind of on the fence, but I’m leaning towards yes.”
++++
He was just being himself, but Anthony was making good on his little teasing promise to make the fair worth Stephen’s while. He had some magical effect where his smile made anyone’s heart sing, and his spell was especially powerful on Stephen. He was truly having fun, for the most part. His motion sickness didn’t flare up at any point, which meant he could spin a bit faster than normal on the teacups ride. It was exhilarating and just dizzying enough that he leaned slightly into Anthony’s shoulder while the group decided what to do next. Stephen found he was oddly at peace with himself and the evening, probably because of Anthony’s spell.
“Okay, here’s what I want to know: what the hell is a hall of mirrors?” Anthony asked.
“How do you not know?” Christine replied, her eyebrows racing up towards her hairline.
“Never in my life have I been exposed to anything that would entail being in a hall of mirrors,” Anthony muttered.
“Surely you’ve been to a carnival before, right?” Hope asked.
“Yes, and amusement parks! But again, I have no idea what it actually is,” Anthony said. “I’ve never seen one until right now.”
“It’s just as it sounds, Ant. It’s a room full of mirrors, almost like a maze I think, and some of the mirrors are distorted. It’s hard to explain without seeing it, but it’s kind of funny,” Stephen replied. “You’re the only person in life who ever gives me an answer,” Anthony half-joked, linking arms with Stephen. “The only person.”
“Rude, didn’t I just tell you the other day about—”
“Hope I love you but I made my point very clear,” Anthony teased. “I need to see these mirrors.”
Stephen smiled. Anthony was so full of an almost childlike wonder, he was kind of like the human equivalent of a ferris wheel… somehow… the comparison made more sense in his head. “This is going to be adorable.”
“Can we go?” Anthony was almost bubbly with excitement.
Stephen couldn’t say no to him, and right now he didn’t want to. “Yeah, come on.”
“It’s this way, let’s go!” Christine pointed vaguely to her left and led the way.
Stephen didn’t know what Anthony expected to see in a room that was literally just Full Of Mirrors, but his every reaction to it was more endearing than the last.
“Could you imagine decorating an entire house like this?” He asked, looking around the room.
“You mean you haven’t?” Christine teased.
Stephen rolled his eyes. “I can barely stand to look at myself for five minutes, this is like hell on earth. Don’t give Ant any ideas about redecorating our apartment, Christine.”
“She doesn’t need to, I wouldn’t do it,” Anthony replied. “Even I don’t need to see this much of myself.”
Christine laughed at their antics before chasing after Hope and giving them a moment alone. There weren’t many other people around, so Stephen had an unobstructed view of several of his reflections checking their phones.
Anthony was still standing beside him, taking everything in. “You okay?”
Stephen (and all of his clones) nodded. “Yeah, I guess. Still no updates though.”
I can’t even be honest with him. I can barely be honest with myself at this point.
“I’m sorry Steph.”
“It’s okay! I’m probably more anxious than I need to be, it’s really fine.”
Anthony frowned slightly but didn’t push him. “I feel like there should be at least one control variable, just a basic full body mirror at the beginning and/or end of these things.”
“There usually is at the end,” Stephen replied. “At least I think. It’s like when you leave home and take another glance at yourself to make sure you look decent. You’re the one who can, and you do, spend five minutes in front of any mirror, so—”
“That’s absolutely not true and you know it. The longest I’ve looked at myself in the front hallway mirror specifically is three minutes tops”
Stephen rolled his eyes. “Whatever you say, babe.”
They continued their walk around the winding hallways, coming to a stop at a standard mirror just in front of the exits.
Christine and Hope were chattering outside, looking at a map of the fairground that they’d found somewhere (Stephen hadn’t a clue where, seeing as he wasn’t paying attention at the time).
“We look cute,” Anthony remarked.
“You do, I don’t,” Stephen said.
“No, we both do!” Anthony’s stubbornness was coming out to play, it seemed. “I mean I know you only keep me around because I’m adorable, but I’m probably the luckiest guy in the world to be yours.”
Stephen blushed and looked at his shoes. “Yeah, I’m only with you because you’re hot and not at all because you’re my best friend who I happen to be madly in love with.”
“Aww.” Anthony smiled and squeezed Stephen’s hand, leaning up to kiss his cheek. “I love you too, you asshole.”
Stephen looked up, staring at their reflections and different expressions. His smile was tired and clearly forced, while Anthony’s was genuine and bright. He couldn’t help but sigh, disappointed in himself for not matching his boyfriend’s energy.
“You sure you’re okay?” Anthony asked.
“I’m trying to be,” Stephen replied. “That’s the best answer I have, and it may not seem like I’m trying very hard, but I am.”
“I know. Stress and anxiety don’t just go away when you ignore them, unfortunately,” Anthony reminded him. “Attention whores that they are.”
Stephen laughed, surprised as always by Anthony’s sudden dry delivery and humor. “I feel like you’re what ‘sugar and spice and everything nice’ means, you can go from sweet and calming to making me laugh within the same breath.” He shuffled forward a bit, dropping his head on Anthony’s shoulder.
“Well I don’t like the implication that I’m nice,” Anthony huffed jokingly.
“I didn’t really imply it, I’m telling you that you’re nice,” Stephen replied.
Anthony just rolled his eyes. “That’s your opinion.”
“I wouldn’t say it if it wasn’t true, you know I don’t like lying,” Stephen said.
Except for the fact that I’m so in denial about Mom not calling that I actually am lying to Anthony. He doesn’t deserve that.
Anthony just shrugged as Stephen looked up at him again. “So when you said that I’m not good at carnival games, that was—”
“That was me trying to encourage you, and while you clearly needed it I don’t think it helped,” Stephen quipped.
“Rude but true. At least there weren’t a lot of people—”
“Move!” A boisterous group of children who couldn’t be older than 13 ran past, shoving past them on their way to the door.
Stephen stumbled and fell back against Anthony, which caused one of the group to say something particularly rude.
Anthony glared at the instigator. “What?”
“Don’t, it’s not worth it,” Stephen said.
The same kid laughed, having the audacity to repeat himself before catching up with the rest of the bullies.
“I don’t know where someone who looks like they’re barely eleven years old learns to talk like that, but they can fuck right off,” Anthony said.
“You’re right. Honestly I would be more upset if worse things hadn’t happened today, but it’s all relative,” Stephen replied. “I’ll tell you about it later, we should go find Hope and Christine.”
Anthony nodded, a scowl still on his face when they found and rejoined their friends.
“Are you self-obsessed idiots done looking at yourselves?” Christine teased.
“You literally heard me say I can’t stand looking at my reflection for more than five minutes. We were just talking,” Stephen said.
“Why do people have to be so goddamn ignorant?” Anthony muttered, kicking the dirt in front of him.
“What happened?” Hope asked.
“Really nothing, just some middle schoolers being stupid,” Stephen replied. “It’s not a big deal. What are we thinking about doing now?”
“I want a snack, I think,” Christine said. “Does anyone want cotton candy?”
“We should get cotton candy!”
Donna had boundless energy, a zest for life, and a fun-loving mischief about her.  She ran into each day like it was a new adventure, sometimes reckless but always under the protective watch of her brothers.
“If that’s what you want, Donna, I’ll buy you some.”
“What about me?”
Victor didn’t come into the world with a smartass attitude, but he quickly adopted some of Stephen’s mannerisms. He learned how to assert himself and how to be fair, which meant he knew when and how to argue on his own behalf.
“Of course Vic, I’ll get you some too.”
“I want the bubblegum flavor!”
It was the end of summer, and the Strange family was spending an afternoon at the zoo. Donna loved animals more than almost anything in the world, and all she’d wanted was to spend the day with her family sharing random animal facts and learning as much as she could. Stephen was the one to plan the excursion, the trip occurring the day after he returned from California. He was visiting Anthony for just under two (2) weeks then, that summer their last as ‘just friends.’
Donna was elated when Stephen came home, her little face lighting up when he announced the family outing.
Outing was an interesting choice of words.
That day trip was the last time the Strange family was whole. That day was the last day Stephen was worth something in his mom’s eyes, the last time he read his sister a bedtime story after pretending that he didn’t want to. All Stephen did was plan a surprise afternoon for Donna and buy her cotton candy, and she was the happiest he’d ever seen her. It was, in the most tragic sense, the perfect last day. She drowned in the lake the next morning, and Stephen felt like he lost control of his life. Desperate to take it back, and against his better judgement, he came out a few days later. He hoped his mom would be supportive, understanding, and maybe even encouraging, but he was as good as disowned by her that day.
“Hey… Earth to Steph.” Anthony softly caressed his face. “Stephen?”
He snapped out of his flashback, probably looking like a deer in the headlights when his eyes met Anthony’s. “Sorry.”
“I thought you were gonna pass out for a minute,” Anthony said.
“I’m good. I just zoned out,” Stephen replied. “It’s not even motion sickness, I genuinely stopped listening to whatever you guys were talking about.”
“So you didn’t hear me ask if any of you wanted cotton candy?” Christine asked.
“That I did hear.” Stephen heard the sudden brittleness in his voice and steeled himself, subconsciously reaching for Anthony’s hand.
“I forgot you don’t like sweets that much, sorry man,” Christine replied.
“That isn’t the problem,” Stephen said. “And that’s not even true.”
Christine just shrugged. “Alright.”
Stephen sighed, ignoring the confused look Christine gave him and running his free hand through his hair. He sighed again. “Sorry Christine.”
“You’re forgiven, Stephen. It’s fine, and sometimes you just have a bad day,” Christine replied. “It’s not like I’ve never gone off on you before.”
“I wouldn’t call that going off, I’ve used all of my self restraint today,” Stephen said. “But thanks.”
He sighed for the third time and leaned against Anthony’s shoulder.
“You okay?” Anthony asked gently.
Stephen looked at his phone again. “Still no updates.”
Anthony frowned, concern and understanding written all over his face. “That’s shitty.”
“You’re right about that,” Stephen replied, laughing despite himself at how direct Anthony’s delivery was. “Rollercoaster?”
“Damnit, I thought I was enough of a thrill for you,” Anthony teased.
Stephen rolled his eyes. “You are, you dumbass. I just thought it’d be fun.”
“I’m not disagreeing! I’m in,” Anthony replied.
“The line isn’t too long, y’all should go now,” Hope said. “We’re getting popcorn, and then we can ride the teacups again before leaving if you guys want?”
“Sure,” Anthony said.
Stephen just nodded. He’d had a good time, but honestly just wanted to go home and pretend like today didn’t happen.
“We can hold your shit too, if you want,” Christine offered.
“Thank you for not bringing up the Great Adventure mishap,” Anthony replied, handing Christine his bag.
“Not sure if I’d call forgetting to take off your sunglasses a mishap,” Stephen quipped, also handing over his bag.
Maybe I’ll get lucky and she’ll have called by the time we’re back.
If I asked a magic 8 ball what the chances were of that happening, I think it’d tell me to go fuck myself.
“What would you call it, then?” Anthony asked indignantly.
“Unfortunate, and a consequence of you not listening to me when I said not to wear them,” Stephen replied.
“You’re both wrong, that’s just Ant’s smooth brain energy hard at work,” Hope said.
Anthony rolled his eyes. “I’m sorry that wearing sunglasses is such a big part of my personal brand! Whatever, see you two in a bit!”
Hope and Christine probably rolled their eyes as Stephen and Anthony went on their way, but all in good fun.
Stephen was starting to feel a little better while they queued for the rollercoaster. He’d always liked them and they never made him dizzy which really helped. Coasters were sort of like a spontaneous thought process in his mind. There were digressions, breakthroughs and thoughts that were best left alone, and something to look forward to at every corner. Stephen felt like there was less time for self loathing on a rollercoaster, less time to hone in on certain things while he was moving so fast. He definitely preferred rollercoasters to tilt-a-whirl type things, even though he didn’t hate the spinning teacup ride they ended the night with. There was just more sitting still involved somehow, which meant more opportunities for self loathing. The pattern of the ride mirrored the circular thought process he slipped into, almost like he was cycling through stages of grief. Stephen wasn’t sure if he was angrier with Beverly for how she treated him or with himself for hoping she’d call, and he hadn’t even made it out of the denial stage. To his expected disappointment, there were no calls from his mom when he checked his phone on the ride home.
I don’t know what I expected.
I keep telling myself that I’m dead to her and it doesn’t seem to sink in.
I know it’s true, and all of this might hurt less if I just accept that.
Christine and Hope were bickering about something in the front of their car, and Stephen didn’t have a clue what it was. He’d tuned them out again, despondently resting his head on Anthony’s shoulder as Christine navigated the traffic.
“Ant?” Stephen’s voice was hushed and straining as he tried not to cry.
Anthony hummed. “That’s me.”
Stephen smiled sadly. “She’s not going to call, Anthony.”
“The night is still—”
“No! No, I mean she’s… I’ll tell you when we get home.” Stephen was trembling now, overwhelmed with everything that he was feeling.
“Okay,” Anthony murmured, softly kissing his head. His heart broke as Stephen  started crying into his shoulder. “I love you.”
Stephen barely fought back a sob. Sometimes he needed reminders that people loved and cared about him, but he was always ashamed to ask. He was getting slowly better at asking for affection, but verbal reassurance was a completely separate beast. When it came to dealing with his mother, he needed to hear that he was loved and valued for who he was to try and combat the self loathing that followed their conversations. He needed help getting his confidence and self assurance back. He didn’t like to be so vulnerable, but Stephen couldn’t deny that sometimes he just wanted to feel loved and safe. Anthony, affectionate and protective and caring and sweet, always knew when Stephen needed these loving affirmations and always provided them. “I love you too.”
“It’s okay. We’ll be home soon, mia vita,” Anthony soothed. He reached for one of Stephen’s hands, holding it in both of his own. “Ti amo con tutto ciò che sono e con tutto ciò che sarò.”
He loves me…
There was always something sweet about coming home to a loud house. The noise could be jarring, a pleasant consequence of 5 relatively loud friends living together, but it served as a welcoming of sorts. Today it was even louder when Stephen and Anthony got home, thanks mostly to an argument between Sam and Wong. Standing between them, Bruce was acting like a moderator of sorts.
“The lovebirds are back!” Wong announced, interrupting what looked like a heated rebuttal from Sam. “How was the carnival?”
“It was good! I tried to win one of those balloon dart games,” Anthony replied.
“Keyword is ‘tried,’ guys,” Stephen added.
“I was too busy thinking about what prize to win since I wanted to give Steph something cute, but it didn’t really go to plan,” Anthony said.
“Next time babe, I believe in you!” Stephen cheered as brightly as he could. He was tired of faking a smile, tired of hoping his mom would come around.
She’s never going to change her mind.
“Maybe we should’ve gone tonight, I feel like it’s going to be more crowded tomorrow,” Sam said.
“I think it depends on when you go,” Anthony replied. “Speaking of going places, you know your man dragged me to Panera with him earlier.”
“I told you! Nothing comes between Bucky and a bread bowl,” Sam said, rolling his eyes. “What time do you think is the best to go tomorrow night?”
Stephen shrugged. “Probably 8? I don’t know. Most of the lines move relatively fast so you should be fine.”
“Don’t worry Sam, if the grumpiest boy on the Eastern seaboard says you’ll be fine, you’ll definitely be good,” Wong teased.
“That’s rich coming from you.” Stephen turned on his heel and left, retreating to the comfort of his bedroom.
“Did I upset him?” Wong asked, mostly addressing Anthony. “I didn’t mean to.”
“Something is bothering him,” Anthony replied. It wasn’t his business to go into detail, nor was he the gatekeeper of what problems Stephen chose to share with their friends. “He should be okay, but I’m gonna go keep him company.”
Anthony headed for his bedroom, bringing the conversation to a halt. Stephen had closed the door, which wasn’t unusual but Anthony still didn’t want to just open it in case Stephen wanted to be completely alone.
He knocked quietly yet audibly to avoid startling Stephen. “Hey, it’s just me. Can I come in?”
“Yeah, ‘course,” Stephen mumbled. He was curled up on their bed, trembling as he looked up at the ceiling.
It was warm in their room as per usual, so Anthony knew Stephen wasn’t shivering from cold.
Stephen felt the bed dip as his boyfriend sat beside him, and he closed his eyes as Anthony began to gently massage his scalp.
“Wong and Christine are probably angry with me,” Stephen said after a while.
“Wong didn’t mean to upset you,” Anthony replied. “Neither did Christine. And I think they understand that you’re not purposefully antagonizing them.”
Stephen sat up, the intense mix of emotion in eyes burning a hole in the ceiling as he leaned against the headboard and a pile of throw pillows.
Anthony shifted just enough to rest his head on Stephen’s shoulder, silently reminding him that he wasn’t alone. He offered one of his hands, Stephen holding it gently. He drew figure eights on Anthony’s upturned palm as he thought, the motion soothing as he started talking.
“Before I came home today, when I went to Starbucks, I got a call from my dad,” Stephen began. “Mom changed the plan for today, he said. I don’t know what she did specifically but all that matters is that she rearranged the family call so I couldn’t join. That was her way of telling me she’s mad at me without having to burden herself by speaking with me.”
Anthony shifted to straddle him, comfortingly resting his hands on Stephen’s arms. Stephen didn’t meet his concerned gaze.“I’m sorry.”
“It gets worse. When I said earlier that I’ve dealt with worse things today than some homophobic children, all of this is what I mean.” Stephen was still staring upwards, as if their ceiling had an answer he didn’t. “I got to talk to Vic, which was most important to me. We didn’t talk for very long since I was planning on going to my next class at that point, but I got to wish him a happy birthday and apologize for not being able to join the call. He wasn’t upset with me, he understood and we left things on the same good terms. I didn’t tell him why I couldn’t join, but I’m sure he knows. I’m sure he’s figured out why Mom and I don’t talk, he knows enough of the story to figure it out.”
He was crying now, all of his emotions boiling over. He was livid, devastated, and afraid for some reason, hiding his face in his hands.
Anthony was silent, taking both of Stephen’s hands and letting him cry until he’d somewhat calmed down.
“Sorry,” Stephen mumbled. He rested their joined hands in his lap and turned his teary gaze on Anthony. “I've not even finished the story and I’m already a mess.”
“It’s okay Steph, you don’t have to be.” Anthony brushed a few stray tears off Stephen’s face.
Stephen sighed. “I knew by the time I got home that she wasn’t going to call me. That’s why I came back, honestly. I didn’t want to sit through my classes thinking about it, thinking about how I’m… thinking about how she wouldn’t call. I tried to make myself tell you earlier, but I can barely come to terms with all of this in my own head. I wasn’t trying to lie to you when you said she might call, I promise. I was just holding onto the smallest wisp of hope that maybe she’d change her mind.”
“I don’t feel like you lied to me,” Anthony replied, one of his hands again finding its way to playing with Stephen’s hair. “I’m sorry I was so insistent in saying she’d call. I was trying to reassure you.”
“I know,” Stephen said. “It helped a little, especially since I was trying to convince myself that she’d end up calling. But she never did, Anthony, and she won’t. Dad said she told him directly that she wasn’t going to talk to me, so why am I such a fool and still hoping she’ll come around? I’m dead to her and I should be able to understand that!”
“I imagine you’re trying to make yourself accept it so you can move on, right?” Anthony asked.
Stephen nodded frantically, his eyes shut tight as he began to cry again. “I know that’s not the best way to deal with things, but I don’t know what to do. I don’t expect her to accept me anytime soon, and I know my family isn’t going to ever feel whole again. But I ruined Victor’s birthday by not showing up for him with the rest of the family! I would’ve joined the call if she wasn’t mad at me, and I didn’t even fucking do anything!”
Stephen was crying more out of anger than sadness, resting his head on Anthony’s shoulder and subconsciously pinching his forearm.
Anthony hugged him, both to reassure Stephen and to keep him from hurting himself in anger. “You haven’t failed him. You did what you could and made the best out of an awful, fucked up situation.”
Stephen just nodded, hearing Anthony’s message but not fully listening “Speaking of fucked up, and this is actually probably the thing I’m most upset about, you know my cousin Maxwell?”
"Yeah.”
 “He took a page out of my mom’s book and outed me to my aunt.”
“Jesus Christ.” Now Anthony looked as angry as Stephen felt, a storm brewing in his eyes.
“I’m lucky because my aunt Claudia is great, and she’s really accepting but that obviously pissed my mom off so now she’s mad at her sister and at me,” Stephen said.
“That’s good about your aunt, but why the fuck would your cousin do that?” Anthony asked.
“He might have thought she already knew, I don’t know. It’s not okay that he did it, but it’s a relief to know that at least she took it well. I was worried she’d make fun of me since she always likes to prank and make me the butt of the joke, and even that would be fine compared to my mom’s response,” Stephen replied. “If I got over this faster I wouldn’t have taken all the fun out of tonight.”
“Hey, stop that,” Anthony murmured. “You didn’t! I like being around you no matter what mood you’re in, and I’m always here for you. That includes when things aren’t going well, by the way. My love for you isn’t conditional.”
Stephen looked up enough just to see Anthony’s face. “Do you think she’s ever going to come around? And not just today, but in general?”
“I hope so,” Anthony replied. “You don’t deserve to deal with this from her, or from anyone but least of all your own mother, and I hope she understands that sooner rather than later. But I can’t say with certainty what she’s going to do.”
“I just want today to be over,” Stephen said with a sigh. “I mean I did have fun tonight, but spending the entire day attached to my phone and trying to ignore what I already know wasn’t really nice.”
Anthony nodded. “Why don’t we get ready for bed then? We can put it all behind us and start over tomorrow.”
“That sounds good,” Stephen whispered. “I know I won’t ever forget this, but just for now I want to set it aside.”
++++
The day should’ve ended there, with slight banter and falling into bed with the person Stephen loved most in the world. But of course it didn’t, of course the powers that controlled his life had to have the last laugh. He’d just closed his eyes and was starting to slip away, content as Anthony pulled up one of their nighttime playlists and hummed along to whatever song was playing. Stephen was the little spoon tonight, feeling loved and secure and safe in the dark of their bedroom and Anthony’s arms. He was finally starting to relax, and then the phone rang.
He didn’t expect it and was annoyed when he heard the first notes of his ringtone, but he answered anyway thinking it was one of their friends. Thor especially had a tendency to call people earlier in the morning or later at night. “Hello?”
Despite having called him, the person on the other end of the line responded with a hasty “I must’ve misdialed. Don’t call back.”
Oh my god.
The cold, familiar voice ringing out over the speakerphone made Stephen’s heart stop.
SHE CALLED!
“No Mom, wait! I didn’t think you were going to call.”
“I don’t consider you my son, I don’t know why you keep calling me your mother,” Beverly replied. “I told you, I misdialed. I wouldn’t go out of my way to speak with you, not after you continuously cast shame onto my family.”
“Not even today? On Victor’s birthday?” Stephen asked.
Beverly scoffed. “No, and don’t even say his name! You and Victor aren’t brothers anymore, you decided that for yourself, and I’ll not have any outside influences corrupting my only son!” She hung up before Stephen could defend himself, the dial tone uncomfortably loud.
Stephen wasn’t sure what to do. A sharp, stabbing numbness seized his body and he curled in on himself to escape the onslaught of emotion hanging over his head. He turned onto his other side, burying his head in Anthony’s chest and failing to keep himself from crying.
“None of what she told you is true,” Anthony said. “Not a damn thing. You—”
Stephen shook his head. “Anthony, don't talk. Please, I’m sorry, I love you and I love your voice but I can’t… it’s too much…”
Anthony shushed him softly, carding his hand through Stephen’s hair again. He wanted to say something, to tell Stephen that he didn’t have to apologize, but that wouldn’t do any good. Instead, he just hugged Stephen tighter and gave him a soft kiss. Sometimes love was best conveyed in actions.
This is just like when I left after the funeral, when we hid from the outside world together. No one makes me feel at home the way Anthony does.
Stephen was too used to crying in Anthony’s arms because of things his mother… because of things Beverly told him. He knew he could run and hide from this or any problem with Anthony, and he’d always be safe and accepted and home. The thought was comforting, especially to the part of Stephen’s mind that was loath and afraid to confront the truth.
Eventually I’m going to have to process this fully and give myself the time to do it. I know myself, and I’m not going to change for anyone. Why should I have to?
Stephen shifted closer to Anthony, wrapping his arms around his boyfriend. He rested his head on Anthony’s shoulder, the tiniest smile on his face.
How does he already have bedhead? Adorable.
Despite saying that he wasn’t tired, Anthony was already falling asleep. “Need anything?”
Stephen shook his head and softly kissed Anthony’s cheek. “I’ll be fine. I’m just as tired as you, if not more.”
“Doubtful.”
“I’m going to ignore the fact that you just scoffed at me.”
“I didn’t!”
Stephen rolled his eyes and leaned up to kiss Anthony’s cheek. “I love you. Thank you.”
“I didn’t do anything, really, and I love you too,” Anthony replied with a yawn.
“You’ve done more for me than you realize, and I think you know it,” Stephen murmured.
Already falling asleep, Anthony didn’t respond verbally. He just hugged Stephen closer, again saying much more than words ever could.
