I had an interesting conversation with an Uber driver this week. He was telling me how he got into driving for Uber. He started in the workforce as an accountant, while he liked his job it wasn’t inspiring for him. So, he bought a new car and started driving for Uber, it wasn’t going to be for long, only until he figured out what he wanted to do next. I asked him if he found it boring compared to his work as an accountant. He replied he loved the fact he worked half the hours for the same money, moved from an highly stressful job to no stress, from working long restrictive hours to working when he wanted, having no work life balance to having lifestyle balance. He was no older than 35 and he already knew there was more to life than slaving away and working against what his body needs and thrives on. This is a similar conversation I have had with a few of the next generation coming through. Instead of doing what society has told them is right they’re already listening to what their body needs and thrives on. How much do you love your job? I have only ever worked in a few jobs I disliked. For the first 5 years I was in the workforce I hated every job I had. My body was stressed before I even stepped into the office and it was because I wasn’t enjoying my work. Now I can’t think of anything more horrible. When I became a journalist I thrived. While there were many stresses like deadlines, I had passion and drive because I loved what I did. Same with the job I am in now, except I don’t have any stress this job, wait there is one stress... but it’s a good stress to the body. It’s called exercise. The rest of my day runs smoothly because I understand what my body needs and when. I understand when it needs to move, eat, be mentally stimulated and need mental rest. It’s called chronobiology and it’s one of the most important parts of health. Yes, more important than exercise and food. This weekend I took that step backwards in my health journey. But it was all for a good cause. I flew to Byron on Friday for a hens weekend for my sister in-law. So definitely a good cause. Personalising your health is not about strict diets and training regimes. It’s about finding a healthy balance where you can still have the things you love as well as reaching those life goals. When we arrived we headed out for dinner @themezclub I ate more then my tummy could hold and drank till I was happy. Saturday I took that next step forward with an amazing lunch put on by one of the girls staying with us. Super healthy and very yummy. But having the night out before, staying up late, plus eating outside my food range and my body was starting to scream at me. I do the cha cha at least once a month. It makes me feel alive and reminds me why good health is a far greater lifestyle. And without the little reminders life would gets quite boring. Don’t punish yourself for having fun! When I was a teenager I lived in the moment. When I was in my 20’s I lived to build a career. When I reached my 30’s it was about work life balance and how to be in my best health. I am almost 40 and already I am thinking about my legacy left on this earth. What will my message to the world be? I have been working on a personalised health project for almost two years now. It’s a health coaching program to help people learn about their body and give them the tools to implement life changes to help guide them to a healthy lifestyle . I started this journey so I could learn about myself but when I started talking to others and sharing what I had learned I found it was helping them too. I want the world to know, you are all unique. Every little bit of you. What we see on the outside is a direct reflection of your health on the inside. Research is now telling us chronobiology or the science of time plays a major factor in our health. It’s more important than exercise and nutrition alone. Health is not a 30 day challenge or a six week diet. It’s far more than that. It’s healthy relationships, vibrant communities, equality, challenging your brain at the right time, relaxation and understanding etc Good health is not one decision. It’s making the decision time and time again to eat nutritious food, exercise, be friendly to the waiter, take a nap when you need it, set boundaries when they’re being crossed and building communities with a group of like minded people. Are you an early bird or a night owl? I have always been an early bird. But waking up early means you need to go to bed by a reasonable hour. That’s normally around 9 for me, if I want to feel at my best the next day. But, as a mother I find myself pushing that time out just so I can have me time, to read or watch a television show and before I know it 10pm comes and goes. The next day I feel shattered so I drink coffee (for those who know about ph360 coffee is not great for Activators), only one or two but enough so I feel like I am buzzing all day and by the time I reach 5pm I am wired, overtired and a little cranky. All this for a couple of hours to myself in the evening. Sound familiar! The funny thing is if I listened to my body or followed my chronobiology and went to bed at 9pm, I normally sleep much better and wake up early, go for a run, feel amazing and ready to take the day head on. I get twice as much done at work because I feel great, my kids are perfect because they don’t have to deal with a crabby mother and then I don’t feel like I need to stay up late just to get away from the world. Chronobiology is so powerful and not just for sleep. It affects the times you eat food, the times you exercise and the time you are most productive during the day. In many cases it can be more powerful than the type of food you eat. It’s the base to synchrony in our bodies. I used to be one of those people who when on a health binge if I stuffed up and accidentally ate a cup cake 😉 or ordered McDonald’s my whole eating well plan was over for the whole day. That was my excuse to continually eat bad for the rest of the day because tomorrow is a new day. Right! 😩 I learned very quickly how terrible this mindset is. How it’s a mindset that gives me the excuse to continually sabotage all the good I have done to my body. What I realised over time and especially when I got into the personalised health space is that it’s ok to eat a cupcake and it’s ok to have McDonald’s... once. What makes it terrible is when I used that excuse to then continually destroy my body with bad decisions. One bad decision is ok. In fact I plan those bad decisions into my week three times. Yes three times I am allowed to eat an unhealthy meal. But once I have had that unhealthy meal or treat I then eat well again. This means I have made 18 good decisions to eat healthy and 3 bad decisions to eat unhealthy during that week. Choosing to eat healthy is not one decision. It’s many times during the week that you have to make that decision over and over. When you plan unhealthy meals into your week you can avoid the guilt and shame that goes with those decisions when they’re not planned and end in a junk food fest. Because now is another chance to get it right, this minute, this hour, this day. Not tomorrow, not in summer or when I get back from holidays. Now! You can choose now. I am a sweets girl! I love my chocolate so I am always looking at healthy ways to get my fix. Here is a great one. But a heads up while there are healthier ingredients in this recipe there still needs to be balance. 2 large Avocados 1/2 cup Unsweetened cocoa powder 1/2 cup Agave syrup, raw 1 & 1/2 teaspoons Puréed Vanilla Extract 1 pinch Cinnamon 1/2 pint Raspberries Instructions 1. Throw this all in the blender and pulse until you have a decadent chocolate mouse. 2. Pour into a martini glass if you want to be fancy or a paper cup 3. At the end of last year I lost about 5 kilos. Because I am a small person it was very noticeable. I was trialling a few things in my diet, one was the type of food I ate and the other was chronobiology, the science of time. There are some major benefits to your health when you eat at the right time or even train at the right time of day. I changed my breakfast from oats to eggs and all my other meals stayed the same. And I stopped eating any foods between the times 3-6pm. That’s it! From these two changes my body was hugely impacted. You don’t need to change you whole diet to make the changes your looking for. What do you see when you look at this body? This is a body that is unhealthy, stressed, lives in pain everyday and is exhausted. Not the answer you though your would get.. right. Because society has taught us thin is healthy and fat is not. How wrong they got it. Because it’s not about how big or small we are. It’s about putting our body into the right environment so it can thrive. At this point in my life I was working a full time job that I hated = stress, a part time weekend job that I loved but it was in another city x 6 hour drive =stress, daily headaches, unhealthy relationships and the list goes on. Ahh tricky hey, you like that one? I thought this would be a good time to talk about being social. Have you ever wondering why ‘Jack’ from work never comes to social functions. He works all day tucked away in his office, works late then heads straight home. Everyone needs a different social lifestyle and if they’re put in one that’s not right for their body it actually causes stress in their body. Jack is an introvert and a drink in front of the fire place with his partner is the perfect social night out. While Annie is the life of the party, the more the merrier in her eyes. But if Annie is left alone for too with no socialisation she actually gets depressed. We are all different, we are all unique. That is an obvious no! But, is it people that stress you out or is it you that stresses you out. We all have control of our own actions so if we are blaming others for how we feel there is a much deeper issue. You see the world is only a reflection of ourselves and if we are stressed then we need to look within to find the answer. Stress can come down to many factors in our life. While outside events can trigger stress, how we have prepared, how we respond and how we handle ourselves ultimately makes the event a stressful one or not. We can ultimately take full control of any situation in how we respond whether it be preparation in the form of exercise, going to bed early or a direct response to another person. Preparing the body for optimal health physically and socially can prepare the body for stress and how it responds. Office dynamics are the soul to any work environment. We’ve all worked in a place that was unhealthy for our mental wellbeing. It’s stressful and draining and you don’t want to go into work because you know it’s going to make you feel terrible. Can you imagine the stress on our politicians. Despite what we see in the media they are still human, they have families and loved ones who know who they really are. They don’t get the choice to have a wellbeing program to sort through the abuse and hatred that they deal with daily. Or a program where everyone is taught how to treat each other, because those people are us, the Australian public. But you have a choice whether it be in the workplace or towards our Polly’s. You have a choice to treat someone good or treat them bad. Emotional wellbeing is just as important as eating healthy, exercising and resting our mind and body. But it’s quickly overlooked in the workforce because people don’t speak out or support others when a bully is at play. Learning to know your colleagues and understand why they are who they are can play a major role in building a strong and cohesive team. Eating well is tough when those around you are in the habit of eating unhealthy. I found it especially hard when working in a corporate environment and morning teas were full of chocolates, slice and cakes. But it just takes one person to influence a culture to a healthier life. It only takes one late night for my body to be out of kilter. But I had two on the weekend. And yes I chose one of them but the other I was kept up by my little one, Miss 3. This was enough to run my body down and the dreaded lurgy to set up home. Today I am suffering nausea, headaches and a major lack of energy. Every time I do this I think to myself ‘why didn’t I just listen to my body and go to bed early, rest and recoup. I am sure many of you can relate. Even if you don’t get sick, other side effects could be feeling flat, lack of energy, foggy brain and feeling tired. Knowing your chronobiology for sleep is vital. It helps take care of your immune system and hormones etc etc. Not taking care of me means I can’t work properly, nor can I be 100% for my work colleagues or family. When this photo was taken I was working on my own schedule as an entrepreneur. It was a time I look back to and think geez life was good. I travelled and worked all over the world. Life was exciting. Not saying it's not now, but my point is when I was younger I did what I wanted and what made me feel good because I was in tune with what my body needed. The older we get the more we get caught up with society and what society is telling us to do. Have you ever considered society could be getting it wrong? or society could be getting it right but only for a % of us. We are all unique in our own way so what was and is good for me might not be right for you? Just because a report reveals tomatoes are healthy doesn't mean they are actually right for your body at this point and time. And just because Jack at the running club can naturally run marathons every three months doesn't mean that's the right exercise for you. We are all different, we all have different needs and wants. Some of us need more meat and some need less. Some of us are marathon runners and some are better at strength training. Some of us like our own company and some of us need a fulfilling social life. When you open your mind up to the possibility that you can't be put in a box and your body is changing everyday with the environment you put it in you can start to live in a world full os possibilities.
