"who can hear a whisper hear?"
no one. not even Kaz, but you know what he can hear? Inej. no, he doesn't hear her movements. he doesn't hear her footsteps, or even the way her body moves through the air. he hears her silence. he feels her presence, yet hears the way she hasn't yet chosen to speak to him. he wants her to speak to him. he cherishes every word out of her mouth, every interaction he gets to have with her. he loves her, and he's always looking out for the next time he gets to see her again

Why did it never occur to me until now that in this scene there may have been a moment, like just a truly singular second as Nandor was raising his hand, that he was thinking of wiping Guillermo's tears away ?

Barry: "Sorry, sir, this ride had to be shut down temporarily"
Shadow: "Why? It looks perfectly fine to me."
Barry: "Some idiot tried to use it as a grind rail and got himself stuck in the supports"
Shadow: "Oh. Good luck to him, then." looks up "Wait. That's my idiot!"
Shadow: *looks up a little higher* "Oh my Gaia..."
Sonic: "HEEY BABE, LOOK HOW HIGH UP I AM!"
Shadow: "HOW THE F*CK DID YOU GOT UP THERE! NOW YOU STAY THERE AND DON'T MOVE!" *makes his way up to Sonic, mumbling and grumbling to himself*
Sonic: "Okay! :D" *almost slips and falls to his grave*

(alan wake-gravity falls crossover) man i love that character. you know, the deeply paranoid author who made a pact with a dark entity that ultimately ended with him stranded in another dimension separated from his loved ones for years at a time? takes place in the pacific northwest? has twin imagery associated with him and a reoccurring specific piece of symbology related to the unfortunate situation they're in? doesn't ever explain the reasoning behind his actions and instead just kinda goes "bro trust me"? yeah he also wears an outer layer of clothing with elbow pads on it, that one.
#my art#stanford pines#alan wake (the man)#ford pines#gravity falls#alan wake#remedyverse#SAtT au#i am. normal about the crossovers i make up.#what do you mean the esoteric weird horror game about stories and the disney cartoon about family dont have a shared audience. sounds fake.#anyways the comic on the right is in honor of a joke i had to scrap in my fic wip due to a perspective switch.#rip that joke i thought you were pretty funny. i like the idea of alan critiquing his own manuscript pages upon the events happening.#oh i should probably do a warning since theres that crunchy image of the aw2 alan death screen huh. uh#blood#aw2 alan death screen my beloved. literally made me go ''oh god'' out loud in shock and horror when i first saw it#anyways did you know theres an au to this objectively already an au crossover. i call it ''bill cipher gets sent to the shadow realm''#bill doesn't show up a lot in this au he gets one scene where he taunts ford abt alan being a danger#with the implication that the dark place/presence genuinely freaks him out. but in this self indulgence of a self indulgence#alan essentially manages to trick bill into swapping places with him and bill ends up trapped in the writers room/the dark place.#lmao get yötön yö'd idiot. YOU are aleksi kesä now.#also i like the idea of zane and bill meeting as well as door and bill meeting. i think they might scare bill a little bit.#just like how zane scares me <3 what a cool character what the fuck is his deal#also you may be wondering why alans in his aw2 look and not aw or awan look despite the fact that lines up closer#to when gravity falls happens-ish. well the answer to that is 1: the crossover uses a lot of the elements from aw2#and 2: i like alans long hair and suit and beard. i like the pathetic sopping look when his hair is in his face

My Favorite New Manga and Graphic Novels I Read in 2023
It's time to take a look at the comics and manga I read this year! I read  a whopping 78 manga and graphic novels in all. Here's a link to my Goodreads year in books (the manga is at the beginning, the novels start with Siren Queen) and my storygraph wrap up.
I also read 36 novels! If you want to see my favorites, check out my reviews here!
And finally, I've got the continuing manga series I've enjoyed this year here, so check that post out too!
Tumblr media
The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen
This is a tale about a first-generation Vietnamese-American boy struggling with coming out to his mother. He connects with his mother through fairytales-- she uses them to express her journey as an immigrant, and he uses them to explore his queerness and identity as a Vietnamese kid growing up in America. It's an absolutely gorgeous book full of Trung Le Nguyen's signature stunning art. The fantastical, ethereal fairy tales are weaved beautifully into the lives of the characters. The book explores how fairy tales can form connection, can express culture, can tap deeply into something real and true, and can offer tragedy and catharsis. The protagonist uses fairy tales to write his own story, and the ending is lovely and moving.
Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles by Mark Russell and Mike Feehan
You may know Mark Russell from his darker, socially aware re-imagining of the Flintstones, which made quite a splash on Tumblr with this post. Well, I had pleasure of meeting him at a local convention, and I finally got his comic re-imagining of Snagglepuss, also of Hanna-Barbera. He re-imagines the titular pink puma as a closeted gay playwright in the 50's dealing with McCarthyism. It's as wild as it sounds, but also really digs into the politics of the time, the struggle of standing against oppression and how art fights through suppression and censorship. It's tragic, hopeful, poignant and full of historical references. I enjoyed it ! Definitely be cautious if you're deeply disturbed by homophobia and suicide.

The Summer Hikaru Died by Mokumokuren
A story about a teenage boy, Yoshiki, who realizes that his best friend and crush Hikaru has died and been replaced by a strange eldritch being who is imitating him. But, missing his loved one and desperate to cling to any piece of him, Yoshiki decides to keep on having a relationship with this mysterious entity. This book's horror is visceral and sublime, especially the bizarre, creepy, beautiful body horror involving the being who replaced Hikaru. It's an exploration of anxieties involving grief, relationships, and sexuality that hits just right, and the atmosphere layered with dread is top notch. I love me some messed up relationships and unknowable queer monsters, and this book delivers.
Chainsaw Man, Look Back and Goodbye Eri by Tatsuki Fujimoto
Chainsaw Man needs no introduction, but I did end up really enjoying the story of the doggy-devil boy hunting other devils. It got so tragic and intense at the end, with lots of great surreal horror imagery and darkly funny moments. I'm impressed it went so hard, though the random powers that kept piling up made what was happening hard to follow at times, especially in fights. I'm also enjoying the current weird arc starring a class-A disaster girl and the demon sharing her body.
Look Back
I really do enjoy how Fuijimoto writes messy pre-teen/teenage girls. They ring so true. The manga follows the fraught friendship between two girls as they create manga, exploring the struggle of art mixing with real relationships, and how someone keeps creating after tragedy. It's a little hard to follow at times (especially since I have to differentiate the leads based on hairstyle), but it's a good read.
Goodbye Eri
Probably my least favorite of the three, but it's a fun read- a weird ride that examines the thin line between fiction and reality in art and makes good use of Fujimoto's cinephile background and signature gaslight gatekeep girlboss characters.
Is Love the Answer? by Uta Isaki
Tumblr media
The story follows a teenage girl, Chika, who has always struggled with not being attracted to anyone. When Chika enters college, she meets queer people all across the spectrum of asexuality, and starts exploring her own identity. As an ace, this is the best story about asexuality that I've read. It was a nuanced look at asexuality and queerness and all the variations. Chika's journey and how she found her community was moving and poignant. It's a honest, moving look at relationships and identity, and how complicated and hard to define both of those things can be. I loved the moments of Chika imagining herself as an alien to explore and cope, and how she bonded with people through magical girl shows and other geekery. My favorite new manga of the year, it really connected with me!
The Girl that Can’t Get a Girlfriend by Mieri Hiranishi
Oh girl, I've been there. This is a fun autobiographical comic about a butch4butch lesbian's struggles finding a partner in a word that favors butch/femme, and it's just an honest look at the messiness of loneliness and relationships. I also appreciate that crushing on Haruka in Sailor Moon and becoming a HaruMichi stan was the beginning the author's queer awakening because uh...same! She has taste, and is truly relatable.
Qualia the Purple: The Complete Manga Collection by Hisamitsu Ueo and Shirou Tsunashima
See my review of the light novel here for my general thoughts on the story, since it's adapted pretty faithfully. I do think the manga is overall the best experience though, because the illustrations break up the detailed explanations of quantum mechanics a bit, and it includes a bit of extra content that fleshes things out, especially withthe ending.
The Single Life: 60 year old lesbian who is single and living alone by Akiko Morishima
Just like it says on the tin, this focuses on a 60-year-old single lesbian. And definitely the shortest thing on here, since only one 30 page chapter is out.  It's a grounded story about a woman looking back on her journey to finding her identity, touching on sexism in the workplace and other challenges. It paints a portrait of a proudly gay elder who's still perfectly content being single and feels fulfilled by the life she had rather than regretting past relationships. I definitely want to see more.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm by Hiromu Arakawa
Arakawa's latest, the story is about a boy who lives in a small village with his little sister is imprisoned and has to carry out a mysterious duty...but then the village is attacked, supernatural daemons awaken, and everything he knows might be wrong. I'm enjoying this fun romp so far! It delivers an really nice plot twist right out the gate (and an excellent subversion of the usual shonen "must-protect-my-saintly-sister" narratives). It boasts Arakawa's usual fun cast and interesting world (and cool ladies). There's some slight tone and pacing issues in the first part- there's so much time spent explaining mechanics the lead doesn't really get to react to his life turning upside down. But it starts smoothing out by the second volume. I'm excited to see what's next!
Superman: Space Age by Mark Russell and Michael Allred
This is a retelling of Superman set throughout the late fifties to early eighties that has Superman interact with the political and social upheaval of the time and question his own role in things. It explored the Superman mythos through a lot of cool new angles, and has a good Lois (why yes she would break Watergate) which is how I always measure a Superman adaptation. My one complaint is, while I liked some of the things it did with Batman, the ending with the Joker was pretty weak. The ending of the overall comic will also be bizarre for anyone not uses to how weird comics can get, but I think I dug it.
#DRCL by Shin'ichi Sakamoto
A manga retelling of Dracula that focuses on Mina as the protagonist and imagines the characters at an English prep school. It adds a lot of  diversity to the characters  and has exquisite, evocative art. I'm curious where it will go and what it  intends to do with all it's changes (especially Lucy), because right now it's mostly vibes and creepiness and the direction isn't clear.

I still have a lotta lore questions about these two besties. DE, answer these, or I will send a decapitated Excalibur plushy head on an Erra body- Red Wedding style- to your office. Your actions have consequences and I will be fucked with a chainsaw before I let my questions go unanswered (for the long run) 😎
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. So, with Shadow being besties with ol man Hugh, have his ideologies about the Orokin changed? I mean, Hunhow must've rubbed some of his anti-fascist opinions onto him, surly...
2. Using the idea that he's a sentient Warframe, does he remember his past? Does he know what Mr AssBalls did to him? Is he thinking about finding his dust particals and doing the warframe equivalent of t-bagging them?
3. Will we get him as a playable Warframe in the future, considering that he and the Drifter aren't too hateful of each other?
4. If Shadow is just someone in a transference loop... whomst be he? We know he was a low guardian, but just how low can he go? Was he a Limbo master?
5. Do they be fuckin?
Tumblr media
I have more questions that must be answered- especially about this duo- but for now, I shall ponder in silence and art...
I await your response, DE...
Also, this post was inspired by this post right here :3

I love that the shades you put on Mega Man look like Rockman Shadow's shades.
Tumblr media
Oh, wow… Thanks, but to be completely honest, I didn’t even realize lol
But that is a neat coincidence!
Actually, I based Rock's visor off of this box art for Megaman 10…
Tumblr media
…and the visor design for Megaman in @miserymet’s comic Megaman Manufactured, which inspired SS!Rock having the visor to begin with (screenshot taken from the comic itself; I recommend reading it, it’s pretty cool)
Tumblr media
But again, that is one neat coincidence!
Thanks for the question/comment, @chirin-chironup!

The Sonic Crew, 40 Years Later-
Just one of many possibilities, of course, but I challenged myself to imagine what Sonic's crew and Team Dark might look like when they're older. Long post beneath the cut:
Sonic
The one who changed the least
Still an absolute daredevil with a heart of gold
All that running and frequent injuries did a number on his knees and he started using knee braces and a cane/crutches in his late 20s
(it took him a while to be okay with this, but he's over that now)
(He can still run if needed, but he'll be hurting for a few days after.)
Gets his need for speed by racing cars, motorcycles, the Tornado, and by skydiving
Still LOVES helping people and spends a lot of time volunteering
Yes, he's still signing autographs
He's got a permanent home now, mostly to store the Tornado and his other vehicles. He took over Tails' workshop when the fox left for greener pastures and likes keeping the place fixed up.
He's been reading a lot more. Now that he's got a permanent place, his library collection is massive
He's just taking it one day at a time, man. Always has, always will
Tails
The one who changed the most
He owns a garage in the city now, with a sign on the door that says "Prower's inventions and tinker shop"
He always knew that he wanted to sell the things he made, but he had absolutely zero interest in the business side of things outside of running social media accounts
So he's gone indie! He's almost more of an artist and influencer than a world-class inventor, but don't let that fool you
He's still selling his patents to top companies and making a crapton of money
(he's the second most well-off of the friend group aside from Rouge.)
So how's he changed?
He's lost a lot of his childlike innocence, become increasingly more focused on people's perception of him and making online content
and ultimately, he chose technology over the outdoors
Sonic kinda knew that sort of thing was inevitable, but it still hurt when Tails decided to move to the big city and stop exercising as much
But he's very happy where he is and how he's living, and he and Sonic still catch up with each other frequently
Knuckles
Still guarding the Master Emerald!
But he's really learned how to do more with his life despite staying on one island for most of his time
Tails finally convinced him to install enough technology to keep him connected to the world below
Since then, Knuckles has become the number one expert on Echidna anthropology/archaeology in the world
He's written several books using speech-to-text technology
(it's been difficult work- he's not the best reader or writer, but he put the effort in and now he's a published author!)
When he's not writing or giving talks on Echidna culture over video call, he's still taking care of Angel Island, growing his own food, and making more discoveries about ancient Echidna culture. That much hasn't changed
Ever since the defeat of Eggman, he's more willing to take vacations off of Angel Island, but it's still a rare occurence
He usually notifies the friend group via group chat whenever he plans on coming down for a visit, often resulting in reunions
Amy
Amy absolutely "settled down" and opened the bakery she's always wanted to open
Unlike Tails, she LOVES the business side of things along with the actual baking
Her bakery is one of the most famous in the city she lives in now
She loves the thrill of commanding the kitchen staff and managing all the tasks that go into producing good pastries!
She also developed a love for children, and spoils any child in her vicinity rotten
And she has kids of her own, duh
She helps organize and moderate the group chat for the old friend group
And she loves coordinating visits/reunions
Her house is always open to anybody and everybody. She loves entertaining guests, especially if they're old friends
Her house is SO cute and homey it's almost overbearing
When her kids have kids she is going to be the sweetest grandma ever
Rouge
Already detailed in this post here!
Shadow
He's matured a lot, finally having enough wisdom to act as "the wise immortal"
He's become a nomad, sort of like how Sonic used to be, except he takes things at a much slower pace
(he retired from GUN and absolutely had a midlife crisis. this is the result)
He keeps diligent journals of every place he visits, food he tries, people he meets, and so on
He's picked up on Sonic's hobby of learning languages due to his travels
He's gotten much better at socializing with strangers but still prefers solitude
. . . but he still carries a phone on him and participates (albeit rarely) in the old friend group chat
(Rouge and Omega have him on speed dial, of course. He'll drop everything at their beck and call, even if it's a simple "I miss you")
He's gotten more interested in some more esoteric stuff that would've made his younger self cringe, like poetry and spirituality
The world knows him as a bit of cryptid, lol
Omega
Unlike Shadow, he's not retired!
He left GUN and became a freelance operator. Kind of a mercenary, except he has just a touch more discretion than that
(His version of a midlife crisis happened when he finally killed Eggman circa 30 or so years ago. Those were some messy, messy times, but since then he's made peace with his continued existence)
He is still Angry, of course, but he's a lot more chill than he used to be. Sometimes this throws Shadow for a loop.
His ego, though ever-present, has been tempered by age
Mostly because he kinda thinks his younger self was a bit cringe??
Mention the word "Meatbag" and he'll get stoically embarrassed about it
Anyways, he's also a nomad, traveling the world to do jobs and stopping by Tails' garage for repairs
He stops by Rouge's house often, and meets up with Shadow at least once a month
("YOU ARE THE FOOLISH ORGANICS THAT CONVINCED ME OF THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP. YOU ARE NOT GETTING RID OF ME SO EASILY.")

If Moth drinks what does he drink and how does he get when drunk?
No need to answer just curious
(Also I love the boi🥺)
@mr-1-2-3-4 gonna be a long one because i've talked about it before on the discord-
Short answer: Cocktails, no hard liquor. Not necessarily flirty, but considering he already praises people when sober he doesn't understand that it's interpreted differently when drunk. He doesn't really drink.
Medium answer: He shouldn't drink since he's a lightweight. Moth stopped any alcohol consumption once joining Shadow Company but one time the rookies got him drunk and yikes. Big cocktail fan, loves a good Piña Colada. He's more likely to be caught drinking mocktails than straight up alcohol out of the bottle (he likes the flavour). Dude loses his filter a little but also gets really emotional and sobby when prodded.
Long answer: Okay, so, he's a mess.
Moth doesn't drink for various reasons e.g. religious, social and personal beliefs. However, he kept on being gifted wine once.
He drank a bottle and a bit once when his former captain helped him move and- uh- ramp that praise up to 100 and see if you can tell if he's flirting or not. Really.
He's one to sing someone's praise when drunk - "Your eyes are- are so beautiful-" "You-... ☺" - and already it's worse because you know he means it platonically most of the time but GODDAMN.
As reference for how much he flirts accidentally is too much on the drunk compliments, one time pre-Shadow Company he accidentally brought a person to his hotel room from a bar, himself being inebriated as hell.
Things were said that he didn't know could be interpreted that way that resulted in this, bawled because he didn't actually want to do stuff with them, apologised five hundred times over because he thought he led them on and gave them $30 so the person could get a taxi back to their place. He wanted to watch Star Trek and sleep.
Hold someone's hands, sing some Sinatra, try to keep his balance. Proceed to topple.
Badly-done waltz, "In other words: hold my hand-... In other words: ... nno that sounds wrong actually wh-where are the words-... Fill my heart with song-"
Moth's drunk behaviour includes holding someone's hands oh so tenderly, swinging them slightly and singing whatever comes to mind with his face reading "☺😊"
Sometimes though he's incredibly emotional. Incredibly.
Once all is said and done and he's intoxicated he's probably going to be in a corner somewhere crying because his brain isn't working like he wants it to. Or he misses someone.
Often gets his old superiors mixed up with his new ones. Sometimes that's fine. Sometimes, "Sarge are you alright- the captain's over there, what do you mean you want him?" "I want my captain-" "-Sir? Sir??? You can't say that about him-" "🥺😢"
How do we know this?
The His rookies got him drunk and recorded it.
Very important distinction his are less disciplined the others.
And as always, if any of the recruits that are under him get in trouble with his superiors, "No, it's my fault, I brought alcohol to make tiramisu. Yeah. My bad. I'll... make them do pushups or run laps or something. After the hangover."
Moth avoids alcohol because he knows what he's like when absolutely intoxicated.
