My great-great uncle was Sgt. Henry N. Gunther, who died at 10:59 AM on 11 November 1918, the last American soldier to die in combat in the Great War. I can't claim to know his thoughts or feelings, but I am fairly sure he would be at least a BIT insulted by that gin advertisement, given how I almost went apoplectic just now when I saw it on your blog. There may be something to be said after all for how Americans tend to ignore WWI remembrances, if this is how other countries do it. Oh, man, I am so mad right now.

That’s a tragic, but also super interesting piece of family history.

The sad thing is is that there’s definitely a market for stuff like that. Supermarkets arranging pepperoni and olives on pizza to look like poppies, remembrance gin, and what often feels like an arm race to win the most extravagant poppy display competition.

There’s a real purpose to remembering those who sat cold and terrified in a trench before being sent to their deaths, how meaningless war is and how we should be doing everything to prevent it.

I feel actually remembering them and understand why they died have fallen down the list of priorities because there’s so much posturing over Remembrance Day.

We felt like 🍕 for dinner. Searched Yelp and found Sgt. Pepperoni's Pizza. Rated 4.5 stars and established in 1976, it's got to be good. And it was! The Works has pepperoni, sausage, meatball, bell pepper, onion, mushroom, black olive, and garlic. The crust was a little thin for my liking but the flavors of the sauce and toppings were amazing! Found a new favorite cider and had some delicious pizza last night at @parlorchicago ! This Pacific Pineapple cider from @2townscider was amazing- the perfect level of sweetness and the pineapple flavor paired perfectly! Motor City Brewery Motor City Brewing Works (I never call it this but this is the actual name). The best. Hands down. Limited menu options but what they do, they do VERY well. Brick oven baked. And of course, the bonus being it's a brewery. Best BBQ chicken pizza I've had and for a great vegetarian option, there's a pear and fig pizza that's my second choice.

Buddy's, I guess. I'm obligated. They made Detroit style what it is but honestly for that, I would choose Shields pizza.

Jolly Pumpkin is pretty good and it has unique pizza options. It is also a brewery lol.

A fun newer place is Brass Rail Pizza, which I haven't had but for some reason this place is hype af on weekends like it's a club or something.

My favorite place to just chill since like high school is a pizza place, bowling alley, and concert hall. The pizza place was called Sgt. Pepperoni's but I don't know if it's still open. 😕 The pizza was great! Nothing special but really good and better than you'd expect.

Not special to Detroit (I don't think, I think it originated in Chicago?) but worth mentioning, is Pizza Papalis. They're famous for their deep dish pizzas and have a signature deep dish seafood pizza that was too pricy for my household as a kid, so it was a special treat when mom got her tax refund lol.
