High Expectations

For those who don't speak German, it roughly translates to self-reliance. It's not uncommon to see young kids in Germany preparing their own meals... using public transportation... and walking themselves to school. In Scandinavia, 5 and 6-year olds attend forest school where they learn to whittle and carve with knives as well as start cooking forest. We understand that this might sound daunting -- even terrifying to think of your kids doing that -- but at Makoto we believe ability comes down to expectations. 

Do you think a four-year old can help bring in groceries... pull weeds,,, or make the bed? Could a 6-year old vacuum? Or a 10-year old make their own dinner? Developmental experts say the answer is "yes" to all of those things. Most American parents, unfortunately, don't expect their kids to do such things as preparing meals. But why?

Parents might say... "Well, they might hurt themselves," or the all too common "It's just easier (and quicker) to do it myself." At Makoto -- and the Martial Arts Studio -- we have a saying... "If you can do it, we expect you to do it." You see, kids love to please us and show us (as well as themselves) that they are capable of doing many, MANY things. So if we expect them to make the bed, they will. But we have to expect it. We have to give them the opportunity to rise to the occasion.

Now, giving them that occasion may be hard. It can be a struggle for us parents to completely stay out of it and let them do the chore/responsibility all themselves. (After all, we realize that in the beginning we will most likely have to re-wash the dishes that they do). But the end result -- the increase in their confidence, capability, and self-worth -- will totally be worth it. 

At Makoto, and The Martial Arts Studio, we always have high expectations for your kids. Because we know that they can do many, many things. And, with work and guidance, rise to every occasion and flourish. Your son or daughter is more capable than you think.

Hello Lovelies! Today was Quadriceps, Hamstrings, and Abs day! I took the last 3 days off training. The weekend I had planned because @Best_girl_tylar and I wanted to spend time together relaxing, cleaning the basement and working on getting some cosplay-related stuff ready. The 3rd day was because I had to spend Sunday night and Monday morning in the ER. Everything is fine; follow-ups are planned and we are keeping an eye on things. You’d think with spending a night in the ER the night before I’d be exhausted. I’m grateful that I’m like my dad and able to sleep in awkward positions vs. my mom who has trouble sleeping even in her own bed lol ^^; I had some trouble with my Dumbbell Squat to Shoulder Press. I think it didn’t help that on the 2 planned rest days I ate like a gremlin again lol. I think I gained a little less than 2lbs from my indulgent food days ^^;. Today I’m just having protein and veggies for lunch ^^;. Later today I gotta find time/energy to do meal prep for the last 3 days of the week #Setupforsuccess I want my muscles to pop as much as possible for my Mirko at Sakuracon lol Thank you for all the love and encouragement, friends. Supporting my son looks like a yellow bath today. He was outside and I asked if he would like a yellow bath. He repeated the words “yellow bath” and walked inside. As an autistic person he struggles with sensory experiences and baths/getting dressed is something that can be supported in many ways. This works for us because he’s particularly attracted to colours.

Make your own bath salts with 1/4 cup Epsom salts, 1/4 cup baking soda and a few drops of your child’s favourite colour. Add a few spoons or the whole lot to one bath. Salt is a great natural healer and that’s why we choose to use it.

Today’s purposeful moment is digging up three tomato plants that had self seeded in our vege garden. It’s autumn here now so they shall die shortly if not moved to a greenhouse. Hopefully we get tomatoes throughout the winter, and hopefully we can move them to Whakangā Farm as well.
