The Bear vs Platonic

i think the show platonic has a good depiction of a platonic friendship and can act as an example of why SydCarmy aren’t platonic.

quick summary: Sylvia (Rose Byrne) and Will (Seth Rogan) were long time friends then they didn’t speak for several years. they eventually reconnect after Sylvia sees on socials that Will is getting divorced and reaches out.

essentially the show depicts a friendship where neither of them are romantically interested in each other. they confide in each other and see each other in a way that their spouses* don’t. which at a point makes Sylvia’s husband feel jealous. the show creates a conversation about what is appropriate to share with your spouse vs your best friend and when (esp when everyone involved is cishet but that’s convo for another time).

*at the start of the series Sylvia is still married and Will is getting divorced but when he was married his spouse also expressed annoyance (for lack of a better term) about their closeness

to me, when i watched platonic, i never felt like i would see Will and Sylvia cross a romantic line.

none of these (⬆️) ever give that they want to be together romantically and/or sexually. (i could barely find any other media of this show and i wasn’t gonna be the one to make it lmaoo). when you remember that Seth Rogan and Rose Byrne had good chemistry when they played a married couple it still doesn’t change how platonic their closeness in this show is.

somehow.

some way.

even when upset with one other. they are close.

their actions at their base can be seen as platonic. friends give each other gifts, friends starts business together, friends argue, friends even get jealous.

but these “friends” seem to maneuver with a closeness and swiftness that you would make you assume they’ve been close for a long time (potential friends to lovers). were once close in an intimate way (former lovers). or might be intimate later (oblivious to love)

Leatherhead makes it to a movie and it's Rose Byrne?! I like the change actually, it shall be interesting and it means more female characters so yup I'm on board.

Not so much for Seth Rogen sneaking in as Bebop since they are usually played/voices by black actors and he's drawn/animated as a black man when human....

I don't really know Hannibal Buress and I only know Natasia Demetriou is in What We Do In The Shadows but I don't watch it. Also the characters are less familiar to me so I'm interested to learn more.
