5000 Follower Celebration: Death In A Tarot Card - Duke Crocker x Reader
Tagging: @kmc1989 @of-mice-and-mirth @bunnybarnes1917 @princessmermaid1289 @jeysbae
Companion piece to:
The Finder - Haven has away of giving you what you need even when you don't know what you're looking for.
The List - Duke makes a list of the reasons you should stay with him.
Baggage - You coax Duke to tell you about his baggage.
Everything (NSFW) - You are everything to Duke.
Love Bite - Duke loves wearing the marks of your love.
Another (NSFW) - Duke wants to make sure you forget any other man.
Come Home - Duke travels to Nova Scotia to bring you home.
Layby - Duke and you take a moment in the aftermath of everything that's happened.
Stars (NSFW) - You and Duke spend a night under the stars.
Duke hasn’t told you about the tarot card, the one that he keeps tucked in the visor of his Jeep because he doesn’t want you find it on the Cape Rouge.
When Elspeth had handed it to him, he had laughed because the Death card, it never really means what it says but then he’d seen the look in her eyes and he realised her Trouble, it’s a lot more literal than most.
“How long?” He had asked her.
“Months at most.” She’d said as her fingers traced over the illustration of his death sentence. “The cards, they don’t tend to draw these things out.”
When he makes it back to the Rouge that night, he doesn’t say anything when he steps through the door, he simply kisses you and that kiss…
It’s everything to him in that moment and Duke, he knows exactly what he has to do.
When you wake up the next morning, it’s to a cup of Earl Grey on the nightstand and an engagement ring on his pillow case. It’s an antique piece, silver with onyx stones set into the clasps. You smile as he takes your hand and places it on your finger.
“Will you?” He asks, his voice a little rough as he looks into your eyes.
“Of course.” You grin, your hands threading through his hair as you draw him back down into bed with you. He spends the morning inside you, making you sure you know exactly how much he loves you before he falls asleep tangled up in the sheets.
It’s a couple of hours later you slip away. You hop into his Jeep with the intention of heading to that bakery he likes when you pull down the visor to block out the sun and you find that tarot card and in that moment everything just falls into place.
You take your own out of your bag and study it alongside his.
Two years ago when you rolled into Haven, you’d found yourself in Elspeth’s shop and she’d given you your own tarot card. The Lovers.
“You’re going to meet man.” She’d told you as she pushed the card towards you. “A rogue and you’re going to fall in love with him, he’s going to give you a home right here on the water and for a time you’ll be happy, the happiest you’ve ever been.”
You’d met Duke Crocker the very next day, ended up living with him on the Cape Rouge.
It’s only now as you recall those words that you realise how temporary they sound.
You wonder if Elspeth had known Duke’s fate when she’d given your own card, if she’d known it would end in tragedy. You sigh as you tuck your card in alongside Duke’s underneath the elastic in the visor.
Whatever comes, the two of you, you’ll handle it together, just like a husband and wife should.

so imagine you've been talking mad shit about a guy to your new best friend, right. but it doesn't really stick, because the first time she ever meets him, he literally saves her life. so she's like "i don't really see what you see, he seems pretty chill" and you're like "whatever. you don't get it, i grew up with him, trust me, i know him better than you do and he sucks. you can't trust him, he's only out for himself." and she's like "okay" but she still hangs out with him, even though she tries to hide it from you at first.
and then that guy starts dying. you know he's gonna die, you can see it happening, he's just the most recent in a string of deaths. he is going to die, right in front of you, if your new best friend can't figure out how to help him. so what do you do? you sit with him. you hold him. you help him get comfortable. you listen to what may be his last words. and then, when he stops breathing, you realize you can't let him die. you start cpr right there, right on the stairs, and you hope and pray that your friend can undo whatever's been done to him before you break too many ribs.
and she does! holy shit, she does! he starts breathing again, and so do you.
and then he doesn't remember any of that happening.
so you continue insisting that you hate him. that you don't trust him. but you start asking for his help—or, more accurately, you get your friend to ask for his help, because she's way more likely to get a yes than you are, because of your insistence that you hate him. he doesn't let you down, not like the last person you asked for help (she helped, but left you, because the kinds of things that happen to you and your friend were too much for her.)
your friend's birthday rolls around, and everybody gets together for a surprise party. you get her a nice sweater; he gets her a necklace that belonged to her long lost mother. you do hate him for that, just a little bit. she starts spending more time with him, trying to hunt down any information about her mother, which leads to finding out exactly how he's going to die. a man with a tattoo (a stylized maze, with four figures around it like compass points) kills him. you all know it's true. it was seen by a woman who predicted dozens of deaths. you've seen the tattoo before, too—on the arm of the first in the string of deaths you investigated all those weeks ago, when you held him as he died.
your friend spends a few nights in a row on his boat, drinking and playing poker with a mutual friend and two out of towners. you think nothing of it—at least, that's what you tell yourself. more honestly, you refuse to think about it. but then, it turns out, she was actually just spying on the out of towners, who turn out to be bad guys, thieves, after something on his boat. which is great news! she had a real, unrelated reason to be there! whew, that's a relief. out loud, all you say is that she has the right to spend time with whoever she wants, even him.
he asks you for help—his life is in danger. he was double crossed, and some very bad people want him dead. he asks you to help him. but him asking you for help sends a slice of spite through you, and you get the urge to remind him of a time he hurt you. you don't often get urges you can follow through with without facing criminal charges, so you give in to this one. he asks you if he deserves to die for being mean to you in the third grade. you shrug, you let him think you won't help, and then you set up an entire sting operation and arrest the people that double crossed him. he's safe. the two of you spend some time together and, for the first time in years, it's amicable.
a couple days later, he gets a threatening visit from a man, just released from prison, with the tattoo. THE tattoo—the one that belongs on the arm of the man who kills him. he freaks out, which is understandable. but then that man turns up dead, and your first thought is of him. you say it's because you suspect him of killing the tattooed man. you find him, panicked and paranoid, with a shotgun he looks more than ready to use, but his hands are shaking and his breath is uneven and when you tell him the man is dead, he's so visibly relieved it even makes you let out a breath. he's safe, and you know he didn't kill anyone, and he's safe.
your father dies that afternoon.
that evening, you are going to die.
maybe.
there's a very real chance that, if you go with your friend to try and help someone, you will die. you ask him to come with you. maybe you remember, think about the fact that when he was dying, you were with him. maybe you don't. maybe you don't think about why you're asking at all. but when he asks you that question without speaking—why would you want him there with you?—you say you want him there for her. maybe he believes it. maybe he's forgotten everything you've ever said about him. maybe he's forgotten that you tried to keep her away from him, claiming it was for her own good. maybe he's forgotten that, not six months ago, the only communication the two of you engaged in was when you would go to his boat just to slap him with whatever citations you could get away with. maybe he cares more about her than he does about you.
he comes with you, and he stays with you. he doesn't go with her, so now you both know you were lying. he stays with you when you collapse, hanging back and leaning forward, like he wants to hold you but he's afraid. (after all, there are people around.) but your friend is the best at what she does, and she saves you. he helps you back to your feet, holds your arms, looks into your eyes to see if you're okay. the bigoted old preacher who's hated you for decades sneers at the two of you, and insists "the lamb can never lie down with the lion." you wave the comment away.
later, he helps you dig your father's grave without even being asked. (that's a poem, all by itself.) he tells you, smiling: "i'm the lion." you smile too.
and that's just the first season, plus a premiere.

I'm half way through season 3 of Haven, and here's my personal summary.
So there's this woman named Audrey who is an FBI agent, except she's not actually an FBI agent at all. She has some other woman's memories. That woman shows up and then has her memories wiped and just goes away. Turns out Audrey doesn't age or something and is actually at least 3 different people I guess.
Then there's basically her 2 love interests.
First is a saltine wafer of a man named Nathan. He's boring. He's also a cop, so in 2010 that probably made him more attractive to a general audience than it does in 2024.
He's white-boy hot, so Audrey has feelings for him for some reason I don't see.
His "thing" is that he can't feel anything -- except Audrey's touch. Since he's a pretty white man cop in 2010's, it's apparently supposed to be romatic that the main reason he likes her is for what she does for him. He brings the bare minimum to the table and is unattractively jealous of Duke (to be described later).
I think I'm supposed to be rooting for him and Audrey to get together. I'm not.
Here he is. Bland & pretty (attractive you're into that).
Then there's this god-damned smoke show named Duke who serves cunt every time he's on screen . We're supposed to think he's a bad guy because at the start of the show he smuggles alcohol and cigars. He owns a bar. He also bullied Nathan in grade school. (So I guess that makes him evil forever? Idk. Nathan can't seem to let it go even after Duke apologizes. We're constantly reminded Duke is "a criminal".)
Duke spends the whole show so far doing whatever Audrey needs even when there's no benefit to himself and trying to help other people (again with no benefit for himself). Unlike Nathan and Audrey, he's not even getting paid for it.
He's snarky and claims he's only out himself -- even though that's consistently not true.
He's got "bad boy" vibes without actually doing much bad at all. Oh, and as if they didn't already make this dude hot enough, he has an ability that's basically this show's flavor of a demon hunter (except the demons are people with powers who do damage unintentionally), but he refuses to use his powers because he doesn't want to be a killer (always making exceptions when someone else needs him to - especially Audrey).
Anyway, this face
I'm conflicted about whether I want to keep watching. Everything seems to be telegraphing that I'm going to hate where this goes.
But damn would it be so satisfying if a snarky, morally gray character like Duke "got the girl" and came out ahead. (Or rather, from my perspective as "a girl", I'd prefer more stories where "the girl" chooses the more complex, devoted guy who's most looking out for her over selfish bland, blonde white guy number five billion and three.)

Thinking about Duke frequently employing kids (to the point that people in town he’s never met like Cornell Stamoran know about it) because he knows what it’s like to be in a bad situation and be powerless to get out because you’re young and have no money of your own, and he just wants to protect the kids in town from that.
It’s probably well known at the high school that if you need money, go to the Gull and ask Duke for a job. You’ll have it and get paid under the table, but he remembers every single kid’s name and when they do make it out on their own, he’s the number one reference on all of their applications. And the references he gives aren’t just good- they’re specific. He remembers that David was great at making kids laugh and that Helena was better at keeping books than his actual accountant and whoever called him has to cut him off cause he won’t stop talking them up.
He’s like Spencer Shay except he’ll pay you and what I would give for a teen horror-sitcom set in Haven about these kids and their boss/older brother figure.
#haven syfy#haven#duke crocker#denial is a river in egypt#he’s fine okay? and he’s giving fantastic references for these kids after college#op#my thoughts

Can I have Duke Crocker x Fem reader with the prompt “I’m taking you home, we’re going home”?
Tagging: @kmc1989 @of-mice-and-mirth @bunnybarnes1917 @princessmermaid1289 @jeysbae
Companion piece to upcoming fic 'Hand Drawn Heart'
When Duke finds you it’s in a cabin in Cape North, Nova Scotia. He know you well enough to understand that if you were feeling threatened you’d take a trip over the border. There are certain regions that your husband doesn’t have reach into and here is one of them.
When he pulls up outside the cabin in his jeep, there’s smoke pluming from the chimney and the windows are aglow. It looks warm and welcoming despite the fact it’s in the middle of nowhere. He takes a second to check his reflection in the mirror. His black eye is fading, along with the bruising on his jaw. There’s more underneath his shirt but he’s been popping pain killers since he left Haven so he can barely feel it.
It was two days after you’d left that you ex-husband had turned up and tried to beat your location out of him. It had ended with Duke stabbing him in the gut with his dive knife because that man, he wasn’t going to stop until Duke was dead and he had you back under his thumb.
When you open the door you’re wearing his shirt from that day, the one you stepped off his boat in. There’s a shotgun in your hand and a fear in your eyes that breaks his heart. He holds up his hands in surrender and that’s when the recognition crosses your features.
“Duke?” You say and he gives you that smile, the one that lights up your entire world.
“Yea sweetheart it’s me.” He says softly as his palm comes to rest on the barrel of the gun guiding it down towards the floor. “I’ve come to take you home.”

Questions I still have after finishing Haven (in no particular order):
Why did Dave see Sarah as his biggest fear in 2x02? And why did Vince ask if he'd seen Lucy? Also what did Nathan see? (That one isn't really plot revelant but I'm curious)
What happened to James after the barn exploded when Nathan shot Howard? Where did he go and how did he survive? How did he then later become a baby again in the series finale? I've sort of been just assuming that the barn has de-aging powers which is how Audrey stayed young. (I know they also say she was immortal, but I headcanon her species doesn't age unless they're in their own realm, not on Earth) so the only thing I can think of is he got lost in the Void til the new barn was made and then he was healed and de-aged??
How did Audrey come back as Paige when they said she wouldn't be able to come back at all? (I'm very happy about this, but even a sentence explaining a loophole would've been nice)
How did James and Arla know about the solution of Audrey/Lucy killing the man she loved to end the Troubles? In 3x13, James tells Audrey that he and Lucy figured it out together (we can assume he then told Arla there was another way to end the Troubles.) But in 5x20, Lucy overhears Nathan tell into Garland, and then immediately meets James at the beach and doesn't tell him about it. James even says he's sad they never found a way to end the Troubles. He dies pretty much immediately after. I feel we may have to chalk this up to a plot hole but man that's a big one and it would bum me out they didn't explain it. Only thing I can think of is Nathan changed the past but that opens a whole different can of worms... plus they sort of imply that Nathan and Duke and Vince never actually changed anything in the past and it's just how things always happened.
How and when was Simon Crocker killed? He says Lucy killed him (and later I think Vince mentions helping) but (and okay I may be wrong about this) doesn't the original Lucy Ripley say in 2x11 that Lucy/Audrey came to visit her before going back into the barn and then months later Simon came asking about her? What's the timeline here? And what were the circumstances surrounding Simon's death?

you know what's FUCKING crazy is duke crocker, career criminal and occasional killer for hire, is actually too scrupulous and ethical for "straight laced" (as if) fbi agent audrey parker.
audrey is so chaotic and machiavellian that nathan's devotion to indulging her is what she wants more than anything, so that's what she chases. it is certainly not what she needs—that woman crosses so many lines, she needs someone to help her even see them, let alone stop her from pole vaulting them—but, like nathan, she doesn't care what she needs. she only wants what she wants. nathan and audrey are TERRIBLE for each other, and they don't care, because all they've ever wanted was someone to love them, and their definition of love is a little bit fucky due to all the fuckiness of their individual and combined lives. audrey thinks love means stopping at nothing to protect her, to save her, and nathan thinks love means showing any amount of affection, ever. those two are absolutely fucked up in just the right ways that meant neither of them could ever have a healthy relationship, but the relationship they have together is ideal. very much a "please never involve anyone else in whatever you've got going on" situation
like. this is something that actually really bothered me until this rewatch. audrey does not one single time show any interest in nathan romantically until he goes full throttle on protecting her from any potential backlash from killing the rev. literally not once. she has more chemistry with duke, which makes sense, because the first thing duke ever does is save her life, so she's going 👀 at duke from day one. but she doesn't give a single shit about nathan as anything other than a work partner until he expresses a willingness to protect her, up to and beyond the point she believes reasonable, impeding her from doing what she thinks is right.
this is also the last time nathan stops her from doing anything, because she kisses him, and he immediately goes "yes ma'am whatever you say ma'am i am your dog" and never exits that mode
