At the end of last term, the voting form included the possibilities of the Roulette Categories for this term, and we have taken the top choices for both Fanart and Fanfiction:

The Fanfiction Roulette Category for this term will be Best Character Development. This is defined as: The craft of giving a character a personality, depth, and motivations that propel them through the story. Includes how a character evolves throughout the course of a story. Must include specific character.

The Fanart Roulette Category for this term will be Best Coloring. This is defined as: An illustration filled with hues, shadows, highlights, and intensity that bring the picture to life.

As a reminder, we added a Roulette Romance category for both Fanfiction and Fanart. This term the pairing chosen will be Best SessKagu Romance (Sesshomaru x Kagura). This will be a category for both Fanart and Fanfiction.

For Fanfiction, it will be defined as: Stories that have developed a believable romance between Sesshomaru and Kagura. My thoughts on IY ships:

Sesskik: OTP. objectively the best ship. best themes. Go read The Rift Between Auras. It also has the best art and the best fandom.

KogKag: Personal favorite. Love the pure unadulterated passion of it. And theres lots of good content on it. And admittedly….I think it's the sexiest relationship.

InuKag: Wonderful ship, Canon, good, nothing really to say.

MirSan EDIT nope, screw this ship, Inusan is best!: best. It makes sense. I always have some misgivings (Sango deserves better after the shit she’s been through, and Miroku’s antics get unfunny at times, and I like strong women), it sometimes feels a bit disrespectful. But I admit there's a genuine bond; they’re a decent couple. Heck, even the more sexist elements make sense. It’s feudal Japan, literally, the 1500’s even if it’s a fantasy setting. The fact they have 3 kids immediately makes sense. Not bad, but I feel like she deserves better.

EDIT: and it doesn't help that the author basically locked in mirsan from the start with not even the slightest consideration for other possibilities. It's basically a forced ship, for good or bad.

Inusan: UPDATE: I am really starting to like this ship, it suffers from having very little content, but what does exist is intriuging, and its starting grow on me. I would love to see it explored more. Its definitely moved up to one of my top ships.

InuKik: really good ship, it's deep and complex, even in canon, but personally I find it a really good pair with KogKag. Two pairs where everyone is happy!

Sesskagu: a spicy couple, the most common theme being they end up being a sassy couple of assholes, revelling in each other’s evil, but with the undertone of a deeper emotional bond.

Sesskag: I don't like it. one of the more popular ships that I actually have genuine grips with. I can’t get aboard, I don’t like it. They don’t fit well. And I get the feeling that it’s the “sesshomaru fangirl-self-insert ship”. The “badass guy going with the bubbly semi-normal girl.” They don't fit. It almost feels a bit....predatory?

Koh/rin: A really cute relationship, childhood friends.

KagSan: Love their interaction they’re really good friends, and I would love to see more interactions between them. But taking it to the romantic level also is would be great.

Kagkik: would have loved to see more interactions between them, there’s so much chemistry. I like it both as friends and even romantic partners. I just want them both to be happy and get past their angst and issues.

KaguKik: I can definitely see the dynamic, and this one would be 90% romantic. Two lost souls finding a bond with each other.

EDIT: a few extras.

AyaKag: makes no sense, but there's one tumblr Artist that makes really cute art of it. Thumbs up.

InuKog: I can respect it. full disclosure, I'm a guy, so I never was into M/M ships, but I can respect it, probably the most reasonable M/M ship.

Naraku X anymone: nah,, Naraku is "pathetic evil", he's the type that you can't even like for being a "dark badass". He's just an all-around looser, he's literally an Incel. So I don't care for it, but whatever floats your boat.

InuSess: just.....why? And all the content involves some form abuse/rape/nasty stuff.

InuYasha was the thing that got me out of so many suicide attempts. It comforted me after many assaults. And the Sunrise decided to be like, "Well! Let's make an un-canon sequel, even though the show ended itself nicely and closed off."

Making one of the VERY BEST characters a pedophile. Are you SERIOUS?!

Imagine my surprise when I learned that Sesshomaru, a 900-something-something-year-old demon, who revived and took in a little 7-year-old girl, ENDS UP MARRYING HER??? AND THEN MAKES HER HAVE KIDS??? THEN LOCKS HER IN A TREE??? AND SHE'S ONLY 18??? SHE LOOKS 13 AT MOST.

He literally adopted her in the original show and manga. She was a little girl. He was an adult man. Even if you put it in human years, if he were 19, SHE'D STILL BE A LITTLE GIRL.

Even when I was five or so I knew that the Sesshrin ship was disgusting.

It seems rather paradoxical that Ken Narita first indicated that he felt Sesshomaru was and might only be compassionate toward Kagura, then disclosed that he struggled to properly interpret Sesshomaru’s love for Kagura while acting, in the very same conversation. (https://m.weibo.cn/status/4840906711107187). It sounds like Sesshomaru loved and did not love Kagura at the same time.

The reason is when Narita mentioned Sesshomaru’s compassion, he was talking about his own opinion toward Sesshomaru the character, whereas when he played his role, he was acting as Sesshomaru himself. Narita as a Sess fan likes the idea of Sesshomaru being alone, with slight tend to see him and Kagura together. When it comes to the anime he voice-acts Sesshomaru in, in the mentioned scene, the character Sesshomaru holds love for Kagura, and that is nothing Narita can or will change. To put it simple, it is Narita’s personal opinion that Sesshomaru at least sympathies with Kagura, but it was the canon plot that there was love from him to her.

 Yes, it was in the official publicity that Sesshomaru and Kagura were a couple in romantic sense, just as the other canon CPs – Miroku and Sango, our hero and heroine (https://m.weibo.cn/status/4840929313167896). Before and during the running of Inuyasha Final Acts, SessKagu always appeared CP in the advertisement. That was why in the famous Yamaguchi-Narita interview they admitted that Sesshomaru loves Kagura. We can still find those official placards showing Sesshomaru and Kagura were in love with each other. The one TINY silver lining of the cashgrab fanfiction show to me is that more people, even if they didnt ship it before, are finally acknowledging the romantic subplot Sesshomaru and Kagura had in canon. For years a lot of people in the fandom acted like the Sesskagu dynamic wasn't important, wasn't romantic or just flat-out ignored it even though it's a major part of both their arcs (especially because they're supporting characters and have sporadic chapter appearances compared to the main cast). An incarnation of Naraku developing feelings for one of Naraku's sworn enemies? That sworn enemy feeling true grief and compassion for the first time because he lost her? Their relationship is still so underrated, but it's nice to see some more people appreciating it and talking about it so long after the series ended because it was always one of my favorite things from the manga

It took me a while to answer this because I was not sure if I even wanted to. As far as I am concerned Yashahime is dead and buried. The Only - and I mean ONLY - part of that show that I acknowledge is Moroha and nothing else. Never mind the fact that I block any Sessrin blog that comes up under the IY tags almost as fast as I block inucest.

But as for the shipping question...

I don't think it's necessarily right that Yashahime made more people acknowledge the idea of shipping Kagura with Lord Fluffy. Instead I think it's due to the show's damaging portrayal of sessrin. People who were once indifferent to the ship suddenly became grossed out. It's one thing to occasionally hear about a bunch of people online going gaga for what sounds like a pedo ship. It's entirely another to actually *SEE* that pedo ship on TV.

Then, there are the people who originally enjoyed the ship but now have to deal with a toxic shipping community. Which I've heard has potentially progressed into a cult since Yashahime. I can understand how that will turn fans off from the ship.

As far as my opinion about the relationship between Sesshoumaru and Kagura, I feel it's very complicated and would be way to long of a dissection to put on this post. Maybe I'll post it separately.

(3/3) one concept i thought was fascinating is how naraku is an entity of his own, and wants to form his own identity outside of onigumo. mirroring kagome's struggle to define herself beyond kikyo. so he is repulsed by onigumo's feelings for kikyo (even though onigumo shares a mind and body with him). but the idea of sesshomaru (who shares some similarities with kikyo) being naraku's first attempt at love, fucking it up immensely, but at the very end being affirmed to having existed as a person by the man he very much still loves, would probably get a laugh and then some bitter tears from him LOL.

Hehe dont worry sesskagu is also one of my fave sesshomaru ships and they have their own messy verse.

You're right about Naraku and Kagome struggling with identity and wanting to be separate individuals from their past selves. I'd never thought about it before and its very interesting. While kagome dislikes being constantly compared to kikyo and is held to high standards/exceptions previously set by kikyo (with no training might I add), naraku wants to rid himself completely from onigumo just bc he views his feelings as a weakness and liability. It's quick the foil.

And your ending for sessnara is so bittersweet. Imagine the joy of finally have your feelings affirmed and shared by your loved one, but not being to experience the joy of finally being together bc you're fading away. It's so heart wrenching 😭🤧

And I can definitely see naraku taking it ironically and sniggering through bitter tears as he dies.

And poor sesshomaru 😰 I know he found love and comfort with rin and inuyasha, but I know it secretly pains him in the inside and there's a hole in his heart from losing naraku. It gets better with time, but still, the emptiness remains...

I'm so happy to hear you love sesskagu too! They're my fav canon iy ship and yes, they're just as messy and tragic. I most have a thing for angsty ships... slown burns too.
