The one TINY silver lining of the cashgrab fanfiction show to me is that more people, even if they didnt ship it before, are finally acknowledging the romantic subplot Sesshomaru and Kagura had in canon. For years a lot of people in the fandom acted like the Sesskagu dynamic wasn't important, wasn't romantic or just flat-out ignored it even though it's a major part of both their arcs (especially because they're supporting characters and have sporadic chapter appearances compared to the main cast). An incarnation of Naraku developing feelings for one of Naraku's sworn enemies? That sworn enemy feeling true grief and compassion for the first time because he lost her? Their relationship is still so underrated, but it's nice to see some more people appreciating it and talking about it so long after the series ended because it was always one of my favorite things from the manga
It took me a while to answer this because I was not sure if I even wanted to. As far as I am concerned Yashahime is dead and buried. The Only - and I mean ONLY - part of that show that I acknowledge is Moroha and nothing else. Never mind the fact that I block any Sessrin blog that comes up under the IY tags almost as fast as I block inucest.
But as for the shipping question...
I don't think it's necessarily right that Yashahime made more people acknowledge the idea of shipping Kagura with Lord Fluffy. Instead I think it's due to the show's damaging portrayal of sessrin. People who were once indifferent to the ship suddenly became grossed out. It's one thing to occasionally hear about a bunch of people online going gaga for what sounds like a pedo ship. It's entirely another to actually *SEE* that pedo ship on TV.
Then, there are the people who originally enjoyed the ship but now have to deal with a toxic shipping community. Which I've heard has potentially progressed into a cult since Yashahime. I can understand how that will turn fans off from the ship.
As far as my opinion about the relationship between Sesshoumaru and Kagura, I feel it's very complicated and would be way to long of a dissection to put on this post. Maybe I'll post it separately.

I am gonna throw a wild guess here: Book sales are probably down. It looks to me like Shiina is throwing a random stunt in a desperate bid for attention.
My theory as to why? Because these are not Shiina's characters, nor really his story. He only has a set number of chapters to write and he needs to justify his book deal every month.
Woah woah woah woah woah woah, THERE’S A WHAT???
Could it really be? Could my Toga/Kirinmaru actually be…canon?
Okay, maybe this is just google translate being google translate. Let’s see what DeepL has to say:

sessshomaru and rin had no chemsity but villains x heroine should enjoy bad boy inuyasha and kagome
Sesshoumaru has no chemistry at all. He's a barely three-dimensional character.
IMO, it's why he's so popular to ship with, despite every ship making him look out of character. He's forbidden fruit. An uncrossable line. A dog you can't pet. So of course his fans want to try and pet him!
The problem with Sessrin can be summed up with one name: Katsuyuki Sumisawa. He butchered Sesshoumaru into an unrecognizable character and then left Rin virtually unchanged from the literary canon. I blame this guy for all the toxic drama and enabling the sick creeps to crawl their way into the Fandom. Not the ship itself.
Inuyasha meanwhile never seemed like a villain to me? Going into headcanon territory here, but Inuyasha at the very beginning of the show just seemed like an insufferable teenager. You know the type, they think that they're grown up, know everything and don't need anyone's advice. Then, they proceed to make the biggest mistake of their life. That's Inuyasha in a nutshell.
However, Kagome is The Badass of the show. I should not have to explain why. If you don't see it, I recommend reading the manga/watching the anime again to see for yourself.

Friendly Reminder:
You can absolutely adore and cherish Moroha while completely ignoring the rest of that terrible spinoff show.
"Princess half demon? Never heard of it. I'm just here for sweet Moroha and her parents! 💕"

An Inconvenient Reminder about the 'Rin's Age' debacle.
The reason behind the belief that Rin was 14/15 when she gave birth to the twins is due largely in part to the terrible pacing of the show.
Katsuyuki Sumisawa is the main writer and the guy who pushed for this show. He's had the script for over a decade, and yet he somehow forgot to factor in the progression of time and how it affects all the characters in Hanyou no Yashahime / Princess Half demon. Which ultimately sparked this whole mess.
HQ92 has a really good breakdown of this.
In season 2, Sumisawa made matters worse with that 'She Was 18!' retcon. Because after Rin finally came out of the tree, she sounded and behaved like a child. You might think that's cute, but remember according to the flawed math, she should be in her early to mid 30s by this point. In comparison, her own daughters are more mature than she is.
So here is the whole discourse about Rin's age in a nutshell. The TL:DR being that it's a valid criticism of bad writing.

Kirinmaru’s real shock
Oh yeah! Sunrise actually had Pedomaru tell Rin to watch the fight in order to remind Kirinmaru of his daughter. So much for “She was 18″.

Are Towa and Setsuna Mary Sues?
First off: What is a Mary sue?
Wiki’s definition: A Mary Sue is a type of fictional character, usually a young woman, who is portrayed as unrealistically free of weaknesses.
In my opinion: a Mary Sue is a character who is written so poorly, that everything is either given to them or dismissed because: 1: They are just awesome! 2: The writer just can’t be bothered to explain why they are awesome.
But are the twins Mary Sues? Their story begins in the forest, dumped at the foot of a tree with a promise from Jaken that they would be raised well. We learn later they do not remember Jaken, they don’t know who their mother is, they don’t know who has been feeding them, clothing them, teaching them how to speak. Nor do they know of the deadbeat father that couldn’t find a door step to leave them on. Yet somehow they live life happily alone in the woods.
Fast forward to them being separated by a forest fire and then reunited in the modern era. You learn that Towa, the modern twin, was taking martial arts and kendo classes while also being asked to keep her powers secret. Meanwhile Setsuna, the feudal twin, is a demon slayer who was also cursed by a butterfly that stole her sleep.
You also see that Towa is so good at her secret demon powers that she can turn her broken ‘magical’ sword into a light saber. Not to mention other powerful demon attacks like the dragon strike. Meanwhile Setsuna is completely unaffected by the fact she can’t sleep. In fact, she doesn’t even seem to want to deal with the butterfly.
The reason why? They are just awesome. No other explanation is given.
Why does this make them Mary Sues? If Hanyou no Yashahime had been a stand alone show with all original characters set in a completely new world, the twins would not be so out of character.
However this show is a spin-off of a world that clearly set the rules and gave us an example of a Hanyou. So when these new characters bend and break the pre-established rules set in this same world without any real explanation as to why they can do it, then it looks very Mary Sue-ish.
In fact, it’s Inuyasha and Kagome who are the ones that make Towa and Setsuna look like Mary Sues. Just compare their back stories and character development to see for yourself. Remember: In the OG series Inuyasha and Kagome are 15 and 14 respectively.
Meanwhile Kirinmaru should have been far more powerful than Naraku, yet he was nerfed for every fight with Towa and Setsuna. Why? To skip over a huge opportunity to develop Kirinmaru’s character and just claim he’s holding back. Because the twins are just awesome.
So are Towa and Setsuna Mary Sues? Yes. Why? Because instead of being given a path of discovery or a reluctant hero’s journey the entire show focuses on how special the twins are. Going as far as punishing other characters that could easily outshine them. While never really giving much of any reason or explanation of how or why.
Mary Sues are just awesome and that is all that a poor writer will feel is necessary to say about them.

My opinion: Although I believe the IY fandom will recover after all this turmoil, I'm doubtful that the SessRin shipping community ever will.
Before Yashahime, the ship was treated like any other. Popular consensus was that the accepted headcanon put Rin as a grown woman. It also accepted the fact that Sesshoumaru would need to be very ooc for the ship to work. But that was fine and there was peace and harmony for the most part.
Then came Yashahime and it instantly turned Sessrin ugly. Between continuity errors in the timeline, Rin's disturbing lack of overall development and the fact there is new merch being released with child Rin next to her 'daughter's, the ship is officially ruined. All thanks to this terrible show.
Even normal people who have never even heard of sesshrin before are disgusted by this portrayal.
Why do I feel that the Sessrin shipping community will never recover? Because of all the Sessrin is Canon!!! (Aka SiC) shippers. They will ensure the Sessrin shipping community remains toxic for years to come. Especially the ones who keep tagging any artwork of child Rin as ship, attack other sesshoumaru pairings trying to drag more shippers down to thier level and overall cause serious drama.
Sadly, it's these insane SiC shippers who are the dominant voice of sessrin. Being drama mongers while drowning out any other sesshrin shippers who just want to return to the peace and harmony they had before Yashahime. Annoying the rest of the fandom into stigmatizing the ship for a very long time.

Every now and again I'm reminded how instead of Hanyou no Yashahime, we could have had two seasons of Inuyasha, Kagome and Moroha being a family.
#anti yashahime#sumisawafanfiction#moroha deserved better#we as fans deserved better.#inuyasha#kagome

Sounds like Hishinuma is trying to save both his career and reputation in this interview.
Going by observations here, but it looks like Yashahime caused some damage to the inuyasha brand. That is very bad, considering how beloved Rumiko Takahashi's works are.
I CAN'T BREATHE Y'ALL I CAN'T BREATHE. ANOTHER INTERVIEW AND THEY CAME WITH THE WHOLE NUKE 💥
*Dinosaur noises*

"However, I was quite troubled with Rin. With how young she is, even when you line her up next to Towa and the others, she doesn’t appear motherlike, no matter what."
Also the freaking rest... Wtf... Just don't excuse it!
You bloody shot yourselves in your dang foot! YOU PEOPLE DREW A CHILD AND YOU AAAALLL FREAKING KNEW IT.
YOU CANNOT TAKE THIS BACK NOW

A gentle reminder to those who need it.
Yashahime isn’t canon. It’s a spin off written by someone other than the original author.
Have a wonderful day!

Someone claimed that there was character growth in Yashahime, they even compared it to the origional series?
Character growth... in Yashahime.
I really needed that laugh. The world is in a very scary place right now, so any amusement or distraction is very much appreciated.

I was never one of those who saw a parental connection, but he was absolutely a guardian in the OG series. Sessh needed someone to protect and for him it ended up being orphans.
Back in the old days the running joke was that Sesshoumaru was a chibi-magnet. Thanks to Yashahime, that was all ruined.
I think another depressing aspect of this Yashahime Sesshoumaru mess is that before this show, there was one unifying thing almost everyone agreed on in regards to him.
Regardless of everyone's ships, HC's of his sexual preferences, identity, or anything else, everyone agreed that he was a character closely affiliated with the protection of children.
His character arc and development heavily involved protecting those weaker than him. It was one of his redeeming factors even people who disliked Sesshoumaru could recognise. He protected both Rin and Kohaku. He gave these orphans a place under his wing as their guardian even if it was unspoken.
What's so depressing about Yashahime is that all of that is now gone. Sesshoumaru would defend and protect two orphans unrelated to him but he'd leave his daughters unconscious on the beach??
He'd leave his infant daughters in the woods and allow them to get mixed up in a forest fire??
I don't know how much I can say this, but when a show so blatantly contradicts the OG characters actions, then blame Sunrise, not Sesshoumaru.
OG Sess:
Yashahime Sess:
Yashahime Sess is exactly what every non Sesshoumaru fan thought he was. That his ONLY redeeming quality is that he's pretty. There's a reason Sesshoumaru fans hate this sequel. It turns him into a hollow, creepy husk who can no longer be affiliated with his one strong redeeming trait, which was silently caring for his group:

'If you don't like Yashahime don't watch it!'
Look. No one is stopping anyone from liking this show. But know there are fans who wanted to enjoy this spinoff, but can't because it was ruined by Sumisawa. We have the right to complain and we will keep doing it!
'Sunrise doesn't have to listen to you!'
Remember the Sonic the Hedgehog movie? The first time they revealed that realistic looking hedgehog? Do you know why the movie was delayed a year and Sonic was redesigned to look videogame accurate? The fans complained. They had the right to complain. The studio listened and now there is a sequel coming out later this year.
Does Sunrise have to listen to Inuyasha fans complain? No. They can do whatever. But if they want a successful and profitable spinoff series, maybe they should!
