Officially forming the theory that the reason more service dog handlers don't use protective gear like boots, goggles, and ear protection on their dog is because the public becomes 3000% more unbearable when they try.

We're all used to "aaaaawwww look the the doggo" when we go out with our working animals, but getting

1. Accosted for pictures (whether folks ask or just invade your space and distract your dog)

2. Pointed at like an exhibit

3. Shouted at (OMG DOGGLES, "why is it wearing that" etc)

4. Actively followed around by strangers

Is downright fucking awful.

I know it looks cool. I know some of our gear is specialized. I know pet dogs don't usually wear/tolerate what SDs learn the wear. But for the love of whatever you deem holy, BE KIND ABOUT IT. All of the actions listed above are just fucking rude. Leave people alone. Leave service dogs alone.

STOP RISKING SERVICE DOGS AND THEIR HANDLERS.

Yesteday, while trying to access a non-pet friendly location with my seizure and cardiac alert SDiT, we were charged by a pet dog. The owners had no control over their dog, allowed it the full six feet of the leash it was on, allowed it to rush up towards my service dog, and when I was shouting "back up, back up" and moving away they laughed at the situation and at us. They gave no apologies - only a "oh guess we have to go this way" as they dragged their dog away from my service animal.

I got inside and collapsed against the check in kiosk. I avoided a medical episode by actual slivers. My service dog behaved phenomenally for this being the SECOND TIME she has been charged and or lunged at by a dog on duty this year, but i could hardly talk or think for the entire time I was at the location, trying to get something important fixed.

It might not seem like a big deal to you to bring your dog out with you. But untrained, uncontrolled pets can cause serious harm and damage not only to service dogs but to their HANDLERS. My closest medical alert contact is an hour away. If I had had a seizure that required an ambulance (anything over a minute unresponsive as per my seizure plan), it would have taken an hour until one of my people could have gotten to the hospital to collect my dog and to help me, someone with severe and extreme medical trauma. MY HEALTH AND MY DOGS SAFETY MATTERS MORE THAN YOUR WANT TO HAVE YOUR PET.

Please. PLEASE. Stop bringing your pets places they don't need to be. It is stressful for them, stressful for us, and not fun for anyone except for you. It is selfish and cruel and terrifying for the service dog handlers who leave every day wondering if today their dog is going to be hurt. ours dogs are our best friends.

Saga had an evening out today. We went on a short, puppy friendly hike where we saw some feral hogs, feral oranges, and I found some native river cane and what looks like a fragmented cane break which was super cool! After, we went to a porch restaurant for dinner and she did great for her first exposure to that sort of environment.

writing this eda-centric princess AU fic is very funny and sad, as most things about this AU are. mainly, it's the first time i've explored what luz's separation anxiety actually looks like in action. like the series has illustrated that she HAS separation anxiety and WHY she does, but this is the first installment where she Actually Is Separated from hunter. even though it's through exactly one (1) wall & she knows she can walk out to check on him at any moment so it arguably doesn't even Count

the thing making this very funny instead of just tragic is that luz's approach is to go "i do not have separation anxiety, actually. i'm not anxious at all and i don't even know what the word anxiety means and i'm going to Prove It by Not obsessively going to the window every two minutes to check that hunter still exists. i'm neurotypical and always have been. i am the Most neurotypical. i'm concentrating really well on diplomacy and being normal because i don't have separation anxiety. nobody would notice a thing wrong if they looked at me right now because nothing is wrong :) yay :) :) :)"

A fresh new infomercial brought to you by a raging Chad at my State Fair this afternoon!

1) In the US, service animals may legally be worked off leash if the leash interferes with the dog's tasks, or the handlers disability. The dog must remain under complete handler control

2) The only people legally allowed to question the legitimacy of service dogs are employees/staff/owners of businesses/venues/events. They may ask and expect answers to the 2 ADA questions. Random other patrons are not owed answers by handlers.

3) There is no specific gear required to determine the legitimacy of a SD team. Amazon vests, leash wraps, fully custom gear, vest provided by organizations, and unlabeled service dogs can all be legitimate teams under US law.

4) Accusing a service dog team you've never seen before of being fake is incredibly insulting and rude. Do not do this. People who do this are assholes.

5) If you are not familiar with service dog laws, do more research before you speak to teams about legalities and their legitimacy in public. Ada.gov is free and has an FAQ section that answers a LOT of the basic SD inquiries.
