It’s not a good plan by any means. He’s assuming he can control Predathos as if it is a sentient being like a god or a fey, and not a mindless force of pure entropy that unmakes everything it touches, which Downfall seems to indicate it is. But it explains his raw confidence and complete unwillingness to explain himself, and I don’t believe for a moment that he can commune with it, or that he would take the words of the Ruidusborn about its intentions at face value.

The first thing Soyona notices when she returns to her hotel room is the lack of Saturday's customary tea arrangement on the table.

The second is the parcel beside her bed...and the envelope on her pillow.

She steadies herself quickly, settling her tense muscles: she has been careful these past few years, but if she was made again, authorities wouldn't have waited until she returned to a place she could so easily challenge in court. And any proper enemy would have needed to pass by the hotel's security.

But the timing of this oddity is too convenient to be coincidence.

She lowers her phone and walks unhurriedly toward the bed, eyeing the other corners of the room: there's nowhere to hide in a place this small, but even the security of her former penthouse had had its flaws...

There's no question in her mind now, and no surprise when she looks down on the pale yellow envelope (the shade of her hair from three years ago) that rests upon her pillow, and sees her name embossed with familiar handwriting.

She reaches down and picks it up, turns it over: a blue sticker seals it, with a single letter: "S".

It's her.

She considers throwing it away immediately. She should. That's the past. But...

She produces a knife from the bracelet on her arm, slender and silver, and slices through the seal.

There's a fragrance as it opens, and she sees the tips of two, no, three blue rosepetals. There's a white card behind them, and two fall as she pulls it free: on the front is a trio of cheaply-drawn Ankylosaurs with a childishly cute faces and party hats, cheering "Welcome to the Club!"

Soyona scowls, hoping it won't play music; she opens it, and at the top of the inside are the words "You're a DINOSAUR now!", with the number "40".

Almost every square centimeter of the rest of the card is covered in the same familiar, professional handwriting from the envelope, from the inside of the cover to just below the card's prewritten message. She starts reading the inside of the cover:

First of all, I hope you checked this first--who knows what kind of poison I could have snuck in here? And if someone else is reading this: hi!" (The second letter has a little heart). You can hand me off to your boss, she knows this isn't poisoned. And if you opened it without checking, I'm flattered that you know my handwriting enough that it's not a forgery.

Anyway, yes, I still know how to find you--no, I'm not telling you how Hope you weren't disappointed that the buyer didn't show up in Montecarlo last month: he didn't stand you up, but he really needed to double-check who he bribed. Anyway, I just wanted to congratulate you on reaching forty. Space is running out on the card, but I'm putting another note inside your gift. Don't worry, it's not a bomb or anything, you know I'm not like that. You should take some time off work, though--I would have said 'hi' in person if you had been in your room! Anyway, Happy Birthday! Hope your work went horribly.

At the bottom, a signature:

P.S.: I took your tea. It's your birthday. Treat yourself to coffee. I left a blend in the restroom with the machine.

Soyona stands up and walks over to the bathroom: sure enough, there is a blue bag of Turkish grounds, with the filter already inserted: Soyona doesn't bother to check if there is water in the machine: she remembers.

She adds the grounds, inserts the pot, and pushes the button. As it whirs to life, she steps back into the hotel room, walking over to inspect the package on her nightstand: it's a paper-wrapped rectangle about twenty centimeters long, tied up with gold ribbon. Another cut, and the paper falls away, revealing what looks to be half of an egg carton, and another note, this one on simple letter paper:

To the Broker:

I understand that your dinosaur business has taken something of a nosedive these past few years, but I want you to know that your work has left its seeds in many places, or perhaps, inspired a number of half-baked copies. Regardless, none of them have been as challenging to dismantle, especially with Darius's help.

The last two labs we busted had leftover eggshells; Dino-Nerd was pointing out how they all had different pigmentation, so we could identify the species. I thought about your paints, so I gathered up six different species (just the shells, not the dinosaurs!) and ground them up, mixed them with some paste, and made a few unique paints: I figured you would appreciate them. They're all labeled, so you can tell which one's which. Anyway, If you feel like quitting this whole "Criminal Mastermind" business and retire to being just a painter or something, I hope this helps. Or maybe you just want to relax while you're thinking up your next evil plan. Don't worry--if it gets out of hand, I'll foil that one, too.

P.P.S: Dino-Nerd also says if I mixed something like Dilophosaurus venom into paint, it might make a neurotoxin that could paralyze or poison you--don't worry, I didn't do that. I felt a little tingly with the Compsognathus eggs, though--I don't know if that's a defense mechanism or something. I recommend a brush. Take care!

Soyona reads the letter again, seeing if there might be a code or something hidden, but there's nothing: it's straightforward, simple, even with the professional beginning. She sighs and folds it shut.

"Reliable as always, Brooklynn," she mutters, setting the note atop the card and the envelope. "And always a troublemaker."

She reaches down to the box, and opens it to inspect the bottles inside.

It wasn’t your imagination: Something was off about the food from the start.

That first glimpse of cantaloupe and honeydew, arranged in the office to welcome Helly R., played by Britt Lower, was a little unnerving: melons in jagged halves — severed! — filled with anemic, out-of-season fruit.

“Severance,” the Apple TV+ show written by Dan Erickson and executive produced by Ben Stiller, follows a group of Lumon Industries employees with chips in their brains that divide their work selves (“innies”) from their main selves (“outies”). For innies, whose lives are confined to the office, who never sleep or see the sun, a snack is a treat. So why doesn’t it feel like one?

The food on “Severance” leaves a bad taste in your mouth because it’s as fluent in doublespeak as the show’s most ambitious corporate climbers. In the show’s second season, which wraps up this week, food has acquired all the chilling, spine-tingling dissonance of upper management, refusing your request for a raise with a warm, unflinching smile.

“I always try to design the props and food to have some connection, some metaphorical undertone,” said Catherine Miller, the show’s prop master, who devised Season 1’s melon presentation to fit the “very graphic, very minimal” aesthetic of Lumon’s retro office. “I think food has the ability to define time and place and mood and overall emotional connection — it can become its own character.”

As a character, the food on “Severance” never says what it means and never means what it says. Food at the office might be packaged as an employee perk, a reward for meeting project goals, but even a stack of golden waffles dripping with maple syrup is only there to enforce compliance.

At Lumon, food is manipulation, suppression, distraction. The company barely acknowledges hunger: Vending machines on the severed floor are filled with small portions of boring snacks like dried blueberries and sunflower seeds. Food takes the sharpest edge off an appetite, but never satisfies it.

On a corporate trip, known in Lumon’s parlance as an Outdoor Retreat and Team-Building Occurrence (ORTBO), the team laughs at their manager Mr. Milchick, portrayed by Tramell Tillman, and his dramatic reading of Lumon’s mythology. Punishment is instantaneous. “The marshmallows, please,” Mr. Milchick commands. “Throw them in the fire.”

“We knew we wanted the marshmallows to be special,” said Ms. Miller, whose team made the thick, rectangular confections from scratch, printing them with images of the Lumon founder Kier Eagan’s face using food-grade ink in a precise shade of Macro Data Refinement blue. “We tend to do angular instead of circular for the Brutalist aesthetic.”

The excitement of food withheld, or deployed, at just the right moment is a tactic, an attempt to redirect characters from big, inconvenient feelings like defiance, curiosity, love or grief. The melon bar is first wheeled out to temper Helly R.’s outrage after she tries unsuccessfully to quit her job at Lumon.

Later, a more elaborate melon bar appears when Burt, the head of Optics and Design on the severed floor, played by Christopher Walken, is forced into retirement, ending his budding workplace romance with Irving, played by John Turturro. After Irving is fired, the team shares a horrific watermelon carved in the shape of his head, part of Lumon’s “bereavement kit.”

For innies, who exist only in the office, termination is death. But Lumon seems to think that melon can manage the full spectrum of their emotions, prescribing it as needed.

“Melon has been a theme over the two seasons, and each time we see it, we want to up the ante,” Ms. Miller said.

To create the eerie watermelon head, Penko Platikanov, the show’s sculptor, carved melons for a week. He used the dark skin of the fruit to form the hair, letting the white rind peep out at the nose. But each time he got down to the details of Mr. Turturro’s face, the texture was too mushy for definition, the water content too high.

In the end, Mr. Platikanov turned to lacquered foam for a realistic and unsettling wet look. Though for a scene where Dylan, played by Zach Cherry, eats some of the funereal watermelon, the team carved about 16 ears out of real fruit.

One glimpse inside the Eagan family’s home and it’s clear how their neuroses — their fear and avoidance of messy emotions and appetites — have trickled down, shaping the entire corporation’s ideology.

The penultimate episode opens with Helena Eagan, the daughter of Lumon’s chief executive, in the middle of her tightly controlled morning routine: a swim followed by a cup of coffee and a single egg, cut into six identical wedges.

“The egg was endowed with a lot of subtext,” said Ms. Miller, who trialed different tools and settled on a vintage wire cutter for the scene, which was shot with dozens and dozens of real hard-boiled eggs (before the current egg shortage). “We wanted a very violent ritual.”

She opens the severed egg on a piece of luxurious china with a menacing image of a child restrained in a chair. (That plate was a rare vintage find, Ms. Miller said, and unlike the endless supply of eggs, she only had one.)

As Helena eats the egg, in tiny bites, with great restraint, her father watches and criticizes her: “I wish you’d take them raw,” he says, in reference to Kier Eagan’s breakfast of three raw eggs. Helena is technically free, but her mornings are a warped mirror of Gemma’s, Lumon’s tortured test subject.

Gemma, played by Dichen Lachman, has her own exercise program and a daily menu of carefully curated foods. A drawer of Lumon branded pods holds all of her meals: rows of processed starches, meats and vegetables, manipulated beyond recognition.

The labels suggest flavors and textures the pods are unlikely to deliver, like “flaky dinner roll,” “rendered marrow” and “candied carrots.” Garnishes like “apple blossoms” give the final plates the look of a generic fine-dining dish from the early days of molecular gastronomy.

“She can mix and match the foods so she has a little bit of ownership, but no control,” said Ms. Miller, who took visual inspiration from some of the food-pod startups on the market today, along with the food trays in “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

These meals aren’t supposed to delight. Like that very first melon bar — would you like the green tasteless melon or the orange tasteless melon? — food maintains an illusion of pleasure and choice for Lumon’s most vulnerable captives, who aren’t supposed to experience pleasure on their own terms, or to make real choices. Not at meal time, not ever.

But a little treat obscures the full extent of the company’s control, and obscuring control is essential to maintaining it.

Nancy felt better and ready to gaslight-gatekeep-girlboss again after a ridiculously expensive spa package. She actually needs them to function…

Most people don’t know this, because she goes to great lengths to hide it, but Nancy is pretty chronically ill…

Thanks to the Passion mod STDs feature… When it was seeding STDs it picked random Sims and she was one of the unlucky ones to get “SIV.” I forgot to rotate back to her to get her quarterly treatment at the hospital, and now the mod has given her a -50 “SIV Complications” moodlet that doesn’t go away no matter what.

Honestly really worried for her, and couldn’t find any info on how this works in the game, like if it shortens their lifespan or not. Hopefully it’s just a bad moodlet. Obviously SIV is meant to be HIV, but I just pretend it’s a generic chronic illness, for storytelling flexibility, as I don’t want to misrepresent a more specific chronic illness experience. I don’t think the mod represents it very well either.

Nancy has the privilege and endless money to spend on the most expensive spa packages. They help offset the terrible moodlet. I pretend they’re treatments or therapies that are less accessible to most Sims. Also her beautifully decorated lot and comfortable expensive objects help as well.

The other Sim with this illness is Monika Morris (no complications as I’ve been on top of treatments) and Bessie Clavell (with complications — blame me. I forgot to rotate back to send her to the regular quarterly hospital treatments, and I feel so bad. I love Bessie. I don’t deserve forgiveness.)

The economic inequality in my Sunset Valley is quite pronounced… and you feel it even more when one of the poorer Sims are ill but still is pressured to work. A Sim like Nancy will be fine if she never works another day in her life… But #girlbossing is such a big part of her identity. She has trouble not working. She puts a lot of pressure on herself, and doesn’t want there to be any cracks in her image that might suggest she is anything less than the perfect productivity machine!

I created this campsite so my Sims can experience camping in their home world and catch a few fish/beetles/butterflies from the World Adventures expansion pack without the need to travel to vacation destinations. I have set this lot as a Small Park to avoid an influx of Sims visiting and placed only three Sim Scouts' Classic Camper tents ready to be used. The tents are spread out so that Sims can relax privately but I did place an outdoor fire pit as well as create a communal kitchen area for Sims to mingle with fellow campers.

Display Monster Health — Adds an indicator of monsters' health.
