Someone just tagged one of my tweedy selfies with "dark academia is problematic" and I'm just dying over here, especially since I associate my look more with riding horses than archiving at the Mütter Museum.
Anyway, "vintage style, not vintage values."

One Dress a Day Challenge
October: Silver Redux
Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries (s1 e6, "Ruddy Gore") / Essie Davis as Phryne Fisher
This stunning dress is referred to as the "Silver Lady" by @phrynefishersfrocks, who did a terrific writeup of the whole outfit with lots of attention to the coat and headpiece. For this post, however, I'm focusing on the dress itself. The material is just amazing! I've included a closeup to show the texture, embroidery, and beadwork.
Phryne seems to favor this sort of asymmetrical neckline. Compare with the purple dress from "Murder on the Ballarat Train," which has a mirror image of the construction.
By the way, here's what Miss S wore in the equivalent episode ("The Haunted Theatre").

A Vintage Halloween Experiment
Maybe because I play cinema-inspired dress up all year as a hobby, recently I’ve been drawn to less specific costumes for Halloween festivities.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This spooky-season look was a mix up of inspirations from the first two decades of the 20th century. I’m not much of a pinterest girly, but I’ve had some adorable (context-less) 1910s and 1920s costumes of bats, moths, and butterflies saved for years and have always wanted to make one of my own. I love the practicality of pairing a simple tunic or one-piece with decorative wings. Lucky me, I had this old spiderweb tablecloth that was just the right size! The next time I break out this costume, I’ll definitely make little bat ears to match!

Costume inspiration collage
As for the hair and makeup, the Italian silent-film star aesthetic is still very much my ideal, so I loosely based my hair and makeup on Pina Menichelli. Since the eras of Menichelli and the costume inspiration roughly align, I think they paired pretty well!

Of course I had to complicate matters for myself and experiment with lighting to capture the costume. What that resulted in was a handful of photos that have a distinctly 1980s vibe… Definitely not what I was going for, but fun photos to take nonetheless.

Happy Halloween all! If you dress up, what are you more inclined towards: specific people/characters/topical gags or more general Halloweenie costumes?

The fifth outfit we see Phyrne wear in "Murder & the Maiden" (Season 3, Episode 2) is a variation on her classic aviatrix look, combined with the previous outfit.
She wears the brown velvet coat from her Russian disguise over her classic black camisole with scalloped edging, black silk faille wide leg trousers, and dark heels with straps, but trades Tiana's embroidered headwrap for her aviator's cap as she hops in the plane. The coat is wide-sleeved, following a smaller silhouette than the fashionable cocoon coat of the time, and the aviatrix cap also appears in "The Green Mill Murder" (1x03), the last time we saw Miss Fisher piloting an aircraft.

I needed Crowley in a flapper dress. Now I feel like I need to do the whole outfit…
A continuation of the ineffable wives through the centuries shoes editions. This time, the 1920s! I feel like Crowley would be able to convince Aziraphale to dance. 💃

I went rogue with today's Mab's Drawlloween Club drawing.
Instead of following the theme, "alien," (although you could argue that the plot is...out of this world) I decided to create some artwork for Ithaqa.
Ithaqa is a 1920s Lovecraftian horror comic series that I illustrate, written by Michael Watson.
You can read the first two issues for FREE if you sign up for their email list.
Ithaqa will be on Kickstarter towards the end of October, please sign up here to be notified on launch day.

One Dress a Day Challenge
October: Gold Redux
Boardwalk Empire (s3 e1, "Resolution") / Kelly Macdonald as Margaret Thompson
Margaret wears this gown to an Egyptian-themed New Year's Eve party on December 31, 1922. It includes a snake-shaped bracelet for a thematic touch and an openwork gold bandeau headdress. There's some lovely beadwork around the neck and shoulders, while the skirt appears to be a solid gold base with a sheer, sequinned overlayer.
