Every month we will pose a question and collate responses as a fun and informal little exercise in getting to know each other and spark discussion. This month's question is:
“How do you come up with your fic titles?”
Sicily: Tbh, I pick words or sentences that are commonly known in the fandoms I write for (this is boring I know, but its what I do :D)
Prush / @proosh: they mostly appear to me via divine manifestation. otherwise I select a thematically resonant word or concept :D
Tama / @delgumofics: Either the idea comes into my head pre-named or I struggle to come up with something [...] I should start naming all my fics like Light Novels
kalashlobo / @kalashnikovlobotomy: It's either a joke about the fic content or song titles/lyrics🤸♂️ you can pry them out my cold dead hands
Netherzon / @netherzon: Something thematically relevant, found during my research if it’s one of those fics, or song lyrics (also thematically relevant). It really depends on the type of fic for me
WhiteWings / @smuttyandabsurd: I'm a thief of lyrics and song titles myself, but sometimes my own genius is almost frightening
@folightening: Either the title comes with the idea or hits me while I'm writing. If it doesn't I have no idea what to title it. Trying to come up with something for most of my fics feels like I'm trying too hard so I'm trying to let myself be lazy about it.
Didi / @teaedon: mostly thematic, other times from lyrics, song titles. hetalia fics enable me to make titles in other languages and feel no remorse
ciel / @torontofetish: for most of my fics, i try to identify a central theme around which the fic is built, and then i either use a word or phrase that invokes imagery of that theme or a word or phrase from the fic itself that encapsulates that theme. with my hetalia fics specifically, i'm having a little fun by doing mostly this same thing, but in the native/official language of my pov character (or one of them, if there are multiple—it's vibes-based in that case).
Yukihitomi / @arthurhonda: I usually try to make it sound like a 2000s anime episode name
Mossman / @one-more-mossman: I pinpoint a main theme in my fic and search for cool songs about it. Then I steal the coolest sounding line
Lacy: usually writing fics and putting titles for me comes in three forms: 1) i finished the fic and i can randomly comes up with a name i am satisfied with, 2) i finished the fic and i cant come up with a name so i dig thru the songs i am currently obsessed with and use their lyrics, 3) i write the fic because of a few songs/quotes/poems so i try to find a title from there. Usually i dun directly name a fic after the song titles (cause i think it shows up when searched? ) either way its a chore to come up with titles 🙂
@billowingangel: Usually I do it based on the tone or feeling that I want to portray with the writing or how I felt writing it. If that makes any sense

Drew some Whitewings, as I do not draw her nearly as much as I should.
Here are some thoughts I had about each individual doodle while drawing them:
Doodle 1: Whitewing is one of the more calm cats in Thunderclan, with her almost never losing her composure emotionally. Thought it would be funny to play with in a situation where she wasn't for a change. She's overhearing rumors about her Birchfall being mates (they just got together and are trying to figure things out in private) and needless to say, she's not happy. It definitely doesn't help that her own apprentice spread those rumors and won't stop pestering her about her relationship during training...
Doodle 2: Birchfall confessing and her reaction :>
Doodle 3: Whitewing emerging victorious from a battle after one of her kits was being threatened, said kits are looking at her with awe. She's not a warrior to be underestimated, she did kill a badger as an apprentice after all.
Doodle 4: Her reaction to Shrewpaw's death. It's one of the more overlooked friendships from the books I think, but she was very close to both Shrewpaw and Spiderpaw as apprentices. No doubt his death hurt like hell.
Doodle 5: Whitepaw looking for her parents (with Brackenfur) when they were kidnapped, searching for hours yet finding nothing. Brackenfur ultimately ends the search, and Whitepaw fears the worst.
Bonus WhiteBirch: I could not resist, they're my favorite couple lol. Including very Self-indulgent headcanons: Birchfall is Omniromantic Asexual and Whitewing is Gender-Non-Conforming Asexual.

For anyone wondering what I have spent my whole day one-
Have my reworked, half canon, family tree for WC. It is very large so keep that in mind (a whole 306 cats!!). Mostly for me but I also feel like it’s fun to look at. I’d suggest just searching specific cats it works out the best.
Family Tree
The Name Changes
Sparkpelt to Sparkfire
Nightheart to Nightshade
Finchlight to Finchflight
Mosskit to Mosspelt
Violetshine to Violetshade
Twigbranch to Twigsprig
Tigerheartstar to Goldenheart
Ivypool to Ivyclaw
Breezepelt to Breezestrike
Pebbleshine to Pebblepad
Stormtail to Stormgrowl
Snowfur to Snowstorm
Whitetail to Ospreytail
Finchflight (ShC) to Roachflight
Odder Changes
TreeVioletDragonfly polycule purely taken from @bonefall ‘s big brain
Ivyclaw and Rosepetal. Came to me while doing the tree and now it’s on there. Don’t ask about how they have kits the litter is just theirs alright?
WillowHeatherHollyCinder polycule will stay no one can stop me they are all lesbians and dating
Mille situation. Briarlight and Blossomfall are the slightly older siblings of Bumblestripe and non Graystripe kittens. She was just expecting and had them soon after joining Thunderclan and then a few moons later had Bumblestripe.
JayPoppy. I had a lot of trouble finding a pairing that worked as the parents for Spotfur and Sorrelstripe since I needed to move them out of the big LionCinder litter so they were tucked there. Poppyfrost just says their hers and no one is to question this.
AlderVelvetPuddle polycule and also Velvet as a church cat. Idk I liked them a lot. Also needed a change to Pouncestep’s parentage bc I wanted just Lightleap and Shadowsight as GoldenDove kittens so she’s secretly Velvet’s kitten that Dove adopted at the church.
Brokenstar. Just Brokenstar. He needed kittens and Fernshade wanted them too so the pair had Badgerkit and Batkit but once Fern saw what he was doing she tried to get them out, Batkit did and was left at the Thunderclan border soon to be swept up by a patrol but Badgerkit didn’t. He died as just a kitten in the fate Fernshade feared. Displeased by his heirs gone Broken and Newt paired up to have Rowanclaw.
Heatherstar is now the sister of Palebird and mother of Onestar. Her only kitten to survive, and we’ve seen she likes more on the nose names so she named him Onekit. Windclan has a bloodline based leadership thing going on. Onewhisker had his one-sided divorce with Firestar and got with Smoke to have Darktail and Heathertail, Smoke refused to let him abandoned her entirely and made him take Heather. He then to save face has another litter with Whitewing being Harestar and Kestrelflight
AshHawkReed bc I said so. After the death of Hawkfrost, Reedwhisker still wanted a family so he had one with Duskfur being Curlfeather and Podlight.
CrookedBlue rights. Bluestar is still aro and she gives all three of her kittens to Crookedstar at the border, Mosskit barely surviving. Moss goes on to be Mosspelt a permanent queen! CrookedWillow is still canon with Silverstream

Urchin and the Heartstone
We’re going back to Mistmantle, baby!
Today’s review is The Mistmantle Chronicles, Book 2: Urchin and the Heartstone. This was published in 2006, written by M. I. McAllister and illustrated by Omar Rayyan.
Content warning: this review will mention vomit and ableism (again)
This is the first sequel I’ve reviewed. I was not very detailed about the plot in my first review, but this one will get more in-depth. I’m also not going to explain the premise as much since I covered that in the last book.
In this book, the protagonist Urchin is kidnapped and brought to another island called Whitewings. All the while, the Heartstone that Mistmantle needs to crown a king is missing.
I really liked this book’s focus on the difficulties of running the island. The Heartstone is missing because of the bad guy from the last book. And some of the problems on Whitewings are caused by all the soldiers that Mistmantle exiled at the end of book one. It felt like the right balance between new challenges and connecting to the first book. It’s not as simple as replacing a bad king with a good king.
This book had two issues that the first book also had. For one thing, the middle bit is kind of boring. There’s a lot of “character A B C finds out that character X Y Z is doing something”. And we have to talk about the number of characters.
During this book, I started writing a character guide on a bookmark. It was simple things like “Whittle, training as lawyer and historian”. By the end, my scrap of paper was running out of space, with 18 characters, and I was still having double-take moments near the end of the book.
I wonder how this would go over as a visual format. Comics, TV shows, etc tend to be able to get away with more characters.
One other issue I have is with the A and B plots. For a book called “Urchin and the Heartstone” it’s not really about Urchin doing anything with the Heartstone. It’s moreso a book about Urchin, which also has some parts about the Heartstone. Because we had Urchin kidnapped on an entirely different island, it was very hard to care about the Heartstone search on Mistmantle. It sort of just deus ex machina’s itself into appearing, once he’s back home.
And speaking of deus ex machina, the bad guys' castle sinks into the ground at the end. There's no final confrontation.
Urchin is kind of a MacGuffin in his own way. People on Whitewings want a Marked Squirrel, so they take Urchin because his fur is mostly white. He's central to the plot because the bad guys decided he was central to the plot. It does make me wonder why the cover doesn’t show him that way, though. He’s pretty obviously a plain red squirrel on the cover.
All that said… I loved this book. It’s an excellent sequel to an excellent book!
So, let’s list some of the great things.
For one, the reunification at the end of the book really is delightful. Too many characters or not, I love this cast. And it’s so heart-warming to see the whole island celebrating the heroes’ return. After he spends so much of the book trapped alone in a tower, Urchin “was back among animals who hugged you and squashed up beside you and didn’t mind much what you smelled of”. D'aww.
Another cute image is children making snow-squirrels with tails that fell off.
I also think it’s very notable that this book doesn't have many evil disabled people. So often in children’s books, especially in animal books, villains have scars or mental illnesses. There is some of that, but it’s much better than the average story in my opinion.
Ableism, or generally fear of difference, is always a villainous trait. Urchin is called a freak on Whitewings, even though his fur is just a different color.
There’s also a pattern where the priests of islands have some kind of disability, like Brother Fir on Mistmantle having a limp. Juniper is another priest-like squirrel. He was hidden away from the culling because of his turned-in paw, and he also has a lung condition.
Generally, I admire that McAllister tells a solid good-versus-evil story. There’s powerful imagery of dust, decay and death for the bad guys. But, there are still gray areas, such as Scatter the squirrel deciding to be loyal to Mistmantle instead of Whitewings. That doesn’t mean she’s automatically innocent, though. The book doesn’t put everyone into a box of either good or evil, and it doesn’t completely ignore someone’s problems if they’re on the side of good.
I do feel obliged to address the inter-species biases… But frankly, I think this book handles them excellently! There’s a moment early on where a squirrel says otters and moles would rather be in the water, or underground, than rule the island. That got my hackles up.
But, after a second reading, it’s not the text itself saying that. It’s the characters. They’re not treating that opinion as fact.
Later, there’s an attempted coup by hedgehogs. I was very surprised about how firm the book is about their “hedgehogs are the only ones who should be in charge” rhetoric. Basically everyone, hedgehog or not, shuts them down immediately.
I appreciate that because, in real life, there are biases. There will be prejudice, and it’s more realistic to show people working through it than to show none at all.
Also, it’s cool that the dynamics vary over time and in different places. Whitewings has moles, hedgehogs and squirrels, but no otters.
A cool piece of worldbuilding from this book was the way the Heartstone works. It jumps out of your hands unless you’re worthy. Also, the reason people can take mole tunnels between islands is that the tunnels predate the water. Cool! Wind Waker made me love anything where the current world is just a flooded version of the old one.
This book had swans, like the last one. But here they are basically mounts. I don't even think we directly hear dialogue from them, even though last book had an island ruled by swans. Weird.
Also, I am pretty sure these guys are human-sized with human lifespans. But, they mention a dead sparrow on a kind of stretcher, at one point. Not sure what that means. Are sparrows the same size as the people? A human doesn't need a stretcher to carry a dead sparrow.
One final note, since I talked about it in the last review: an early chapter of this book had a squirrel throwing up. Wow… they don’t just have human abilities of language and tool-making, they can also vomit like us…
My rating: 4
Overall rating: 4

Outside The Flames - 4k Words
A fire starts in Thunderclan camp. Brambleclaw and Leafpool can do nothing but wait for their family to emerge
Tw: fire
Just a few minutes ago, a fire had started in Thunderclan territory. For the second time in his life, Firestar had to lead his clan away from flames and towards safety. Running through the smoke and embers had felt horrible the first time, when he only had one life to lose. It felt a so much worse now, when he three more to give.
They've all run towards the lake. Normally, when the camp was compromised, Firestar woukd take his clan to thd abandoned twoleg nest. Byt the risk if the fire spreading northwards was too great to riskm At least here, the water will provide some safety.
"Is this everyone!?" Firestar asks as he jumps onto a rock, looking over his cats best he can. The clan had just come to a halt behind him, some cats accidently skidding into the shallow ends of the lake in their panic. The smoke and darkness are both making it hard to see everyone, but he's counting them the best that he can. His clanmates are starting to huddle into a large lump of cats, all tending and comforting to each other the best they can. Seeing that, so far, no ones been seriously injured makes the leader feel a little bit better.
He squints against the fire light and darkness, identifying each cat as well as he's able too. Firestar runs through a lost of names in his head, trying to find all of them. Maybe they should do a roll call. Maybe Brambleclaw, who he can see weaving around the groups perimeter, is already doing that.
Leafpool's checking for injuries, Brightheart is trailing behind her. Hazeltail and Mousewhisker are huddled into one, same colored blob of fur, Mousefur is leading Longtail closer to the lakes edge. Dustpelt is fretting over Foxpaw and Icepaw, so are Spiderleg and Birchfall. Daisy and Millie have all five of the kits huddled near them-
"I think so!" Sandstorm calls up to Firestar, his mate's voice startling him. She and Graystripe are also doing their own headcounts, apparently of their own accords, circling around the edge of the group like snakes. They seem to be double checking for their leader and deputy. Brambleclaw is padding over to them now, bringing up the rear of their group, his own roll call seemingly finished. Firestar feels a sudden rush if gratitude for these cats, knowing he wouldn't be able to keep track of so many cats without them.
"Has anyone seen Jayfeather!?" Leafpool calls out next, worry for her apprentice clear. Firestar scans the crowd around her, eyes darting quickly. He does not see the gray tabby tom, nor does he hear that snappy voice answering back.
"He should be with his littermates, I saw them guiding him." Whitewing news, sniffing their air for the aforementioned cats scent. Hollyleaf's distinctive black pelt, which is so easily spotted in a crowd, is nowhere in sight. Firestar hopes the three of them are just lagging behind.
"Hollyleaf! Lionblaze!?" Brackenfur calls out, his former apprentices name being the first off his tounge. Poppyfrost sits next to her father, tail switching worriedly for her friends. Her two sisters, who had been standing nearby, move to start searching the crowd when neither warrior awnsers them. Firestar feels a spike of fear piece his heart.
"Firestar!" Brambleclaw yowls suddenly, running toward his leader. Ferncloud runs behind him, expression panicked. The leader can't help the way his gut twists upon seeing her face. Something else is clearly wrong. "We can't find Ashfur!"
Firestar swears under his breath. That's one missing warrior, and possibly two more. Plus a medicine cat. The fire rages on menacingly in the distance, and he can't help but wonder which of his clanmates might be burning under its ire. If his grandchildren are in there, suffering as he stands there.
Sandstorm runs up to him next, tail flicking wildly behind her. Graystripe has stayed with the rest of the clan, and seems to have gathered the senior warriors around him, instructing them. Good, it seems like the clan will need them tonight. "Squrrielflight's also missing!"
"Mouse dung." Firestar hisses, lookinh out towards the clan again. His eyes land on Leafpool, who has moved too far to overhear them; still checking on her clanmates despite her distress. When his eldest kit meets his gaze, Firestar beckons her over with a flick of his tail. He'll leave it to Sandstorm and Brambleclaw to fill her in, there's three more warriors he needs to find fast.
"Honeyfern! Cinderheart! Any sign of Hollyleaf and Lionblaze?" Firestar yells, jumping down from the rock he'd been perched on. He prays and prays, that while he was distracted, the three siblings have shown up. He doesn't know what he's going to so if they haven't.
It doesn't take long for the two she-cats to make their way out of the small crowd, bothing practically springing towards the distressed family. That also means it doesn't take long for the bad news to reach them either.
"They're not here!" Cinderheart wails, her ears flattening in distress. Her eyes are wide with fear, anxiety, and something else that Firestar cannot name. Something like familiarity shining in them. (He has to wonder why she looks so much like Cinderheart did back then, treating her injured clanmates as the forest burned around her and Bluestar disowned Starclan on her other side.)
"Neither is Jayfeather!" Honeyfern adds, turning to look over their clanmates again. Like she might have missed them somewhere in the chaos. The golden warrior does not find what she is looking for, and was never going too. Not tonight.
Firestar feel his heart sink down to his stomach. His daughter and her kits are missing. One of his warriors is missing, and there is a fire burning down their home. Beside him, Leafpool let's out a wail, one as powerful as grieving mother's. Brambleclaw moves to comfort her, and probably somewhat comfort himself. Though the comfort will be wasted. It's hard to feel reassured when your loved ones could be burning alive, and you can do nothing to help.
"Oh Starclan." Sandstorm mutters, pressing herself against a panicking Ferncloud. The gray queen lets out a sound of distress, or grief, and hides her face in her friend's side. Battling her own worries, Sandstorm can only offer comforting licks.
Firestar looks at the fire, and so badly wants to run into it. He wants to run into the danger and save Ashfur, save his kin. He could probably do it too, that's the worst part. He could so easily run in there and save them all, only at the cost of one life. Maybe two. Especially if three out of five of them are still together, like Whitewing said they should be. He could run in there and save them all and still be here to help his clan recover in the morning. And that is the worst part.
But he stays, and does not run into the fire. It's Sandstorm that keeps him here, her fanatic glances between the crying Ferncloud and the fire that holds her duaghter inside it. It's Leafpool and Brambleclaw, two cats usually unaffectionate with each other, staying so close as they do nothing but wait and wait for the embers to die down. It's the wail Leafpool had let out that keeps him locked in place. He cannot leave his daughter now, cannot risk his lives now, not when she is in so much distress. Squirrelflight would probably scold him for trying to save her, anyways. She always been too independent for her own good. Even if she really did need saving....
The news has spread to the rest of the clan, it seems. It feels like all of them have moved closer, as if saying that they were here. That they were worried, too. Dustpelt keeps looking over at Ferncloud, but cannot (and does not want too) leave their terrified kits. He's trusting Sandstorm, an old friend, to be there for the love of his life. All the new warriors, ones that had been apprenticed with Lionblaze and his siblings, are twitching in worry. Their friends are in that fire. Their home is burning. There is little their parents and former mentors can do to comfort them. Graystripe is keeping the clan together, but can't help but shoot worried glances at his best friend. The other warriors mutter their concern and prayers for Squirrelflight and Ashfur.
Cloudtail goes to sit beside Firestar without the leader even realizing it. His nephew leans against him, and mutters something about the fire in their old forest home. Something about how devastating it was and how many lives it took. Firestar retorts that he remembers, and hopes no one is pulling a Yellowfang this time. The laugh that gets out of Cloudtail is dry and caked with years old grief.
Sandstorm sits next to her mate at some point, and lets him birt his head in her fur. She takes Ferncloud with her. Cloudtail goes to his foster sister's side, and does not leave until they see her brother again. Brambleclaw and Leafpool go to wait just at the edge of the forest, so they will know when their loved ones are nearby. Usually, Firestar would tell them to stay bear the water, near safety. He finds that he cannot do that. Cannot deny them this.
The fire rages on around them for what feels like an eternity, and it truly is going to be a oong night.
___________________________________
Brambleclaw sits at the edge of a burning forest, waiting for his family. Leafpool paces beside him. They don't speak much, while they wait, only in passing. They have already been waiting for what feels like centuries.
"Do you think they're okay?" He asks, needing something to fill the silence. It's stretched on for too long. Heating nothing but the fire is just making him worry more.
"I hope so." Leafpool says, her voice tight with worry. She stops pacing, and sits down next to him, tail tucked over her paws. She looks into the fire, and doesn't look away from it for a long long time.
Silence falls over them once again. The clan watches them, but does not bother their deputy of medicine cat. They simply leave them to sit there. Maybe they know trying to drag them away from the fire would be a futile effort. Even Firestar lets them be.
"Squirrelflight's with them." Leafpool mews into the silence. Her eyes haven't moved from the inferno in front of them. She sounds confident, like Starclan told her that themsleves.
"How do you know that?" Brambleclaw asks, glancing towards her curious. For all they know, Squirrelflight is lost in there by herself. Or the three are still back at camp, or they're with Ashfur. Anything could be happening in there, and they wouldn't know what. It's the worst part about wanting like this.
Leafpool simply shrugs, like her awnser is the most obvious one in the world. Like even a kit could figure it out. "Where else could she be?"
"Alone, or with Ashfur." He mews, watching the fire dance over the trees for what has to be the millionth time. All of them could be separated in there, or trapped under falling trees, burning, dying-
"Or she went back for her kits." Leafpool points out, finally moving her gaze from the forest. She looks at the deputy pointedly. And....yes, that did seem like something Squirrelflight would do. Even injured and recovering like she currently is.
"That is exactly what she would do." Brambleclaw sighs. Leafpool's right, she probably is with their kits. And if not that, his mate is probably trying to make her way towards them. She most likely doesnt know Ashfur's even in there with them. "She's brave like that."
"She's stupid, that's what she is." The medicine mutters, sounding more upset than before. Leafpool looks back to the fire, her eyes themsleves seeming to burn with the same intensity it does.
Brambleclaw looks over, suprised. It was unlike Leafpool to act like this. The fire must be getting to her more than he'd thought. "Would you not run into fire to save your kin?"
"I would." She sighs, curling her tail around her tighter. The inferno crackles in front of them again, and her ears flick towards the sound anxiously. "But I'm worried for my sister."
Brambleclaw nods in understanding, remember the few times Tawnypelt, his own sister, had been in such serious danger. He rememberes how worried he had been, how he would've done anything to save her. Leafpool is closer to her sister than he is with his. What he felt back then is probably only a fraction of what she's feeling now.
"She's strong." Brambleclaw mews. He's trying to comfort Leafpool, but also himself as well. He doesn't think it's doing much for either of them, but it's better than voicing the worries running rampant in his head. "She'll be okay."
The medicine nodd at him, and the two cats go back to watching the fire roar. It seems to be calming down just a bit, but not enough for any living creature to get out. Brambleclaw has to wonder how much destruction has come to their home, how many trees have fallen over and what the hollow could look like now. He almost doesn't want to know what's been destroyed, and what still remains.
"This is a dumb question," He says, looking back over at Leafpool. Still, all this time later, her eyes have not moved from the raging forest fire. They still blaze the same way, too. "But how are you holding up?"
"How do you think I'm holding up?" Leafpool asks, sarcasm dripping from her tone. Sarcastic, another thing their medicine cat is usually not. Sometimes he thinks being a bit meaner would benefit more, when it came to certain paitents. But maybe not as mean as Jayfeather...
"Like I said, dumb question." Brambleclaw mews, jerking his thoughts away from his missing son. "I'm doing horribly." He adds, in case Leafpool was wondering. He doesn't think she was. At least it filled the silence and didn't sound like burning.
"My whole world's in the fire right now." Leafpool says honestly, the sarcasm leaving her voice as quickly as it had appeared. "I feel like my heads been sliced off."
(If her whole world sounded like more than just her sister, Brambleclaw will not question it. She had always loved their kits like they were her own, anyways...)
___________________________________
Ashfur is the first to return from the fire, not too long after they discover him missing. And not long after raindrops start to sprinkle down, either. The spotted gray warrior comes badgering out of the foliage, eyes wide and breathing panicked. Leafpool stops pacing at the forests edge, and rushes over instantly. Ferncloud and Brambleclaw are hot on her heels.
"Ashfur!" Ferncloud yells, sprinting towards her brother, and over taking Leafpool in the process. She nearly crashes into him, almost sending both of them to the ground. He's pretty sure Ferncloud could care less about that.
"Oh, Ash you're okay!" She purrs, rubbing her cheek against him. Ferncloud presses herself closer to her brother, their pelts bending together into one. The gray she-cat is grateful she still has her brother, and has not tragically lost him as well.
Ashfur smiles, and touches his nose to her ear affectionately. His voice is still sounds shaky from whatever had just happened in that fire. "I'm fine, Fern. I'm okay."
Brambleclaw runs after the gray queen and their medicine cat, coming to a halt infront of them. Leafpool is right infront of them, already checking Ashfur over for any burns.
"Ashfur!" The deputy asks, glad that at least one of their missing clanmates is okay. Though there are still four cats on his mind..."Did you see Squrrielflight? Or our kits?"
"Yes, I did," Ashfur nods, his bkue eyes wide with some kind of emotion. It looks vaguely like worry. "They were trapped behind a tree branch, but me and Squrrielflight got them out. They should be here soon."
"Oh Starclan, thank you Ashfur!" The deputy purrs, relief swamping him. Ferncloud purrs again, calling her brother a hero. Leafpool, who hadn't found any injuries on the gray tom, purrs her thanks as well. She says she couldn't be more grateful to him. Ashfur just says it was the least he could do.
As if on cue, Squrrielflight comes barreling out of the bushes. Her three kits were following right behind her, Lionblaze bringing up the front of the group. Hollyleaf, who padded right behind her brother, had her flank pressed against Jayfeather's; guiding her youngest littermate through the woods. He seemed to shaken up to say anything in protest.
"Squirrelflight!" Brambleclaw exclaimed, running towards his mate, all thoughts of Ashfur and his heroics momentarily forgotten. His mate, as well as they're kits, are alive and safe. That's all that matters for now.
"Jayfeather!" Leafpool runs over with him, immediately circling around her former apprentice. Her tail lashes with emotion behind her. "Are you okay? Are you burned anywhere?"
"I'm fine, Leafpool." Jayfeather mutters, all the usual snappies gones from his voice. If they hadn’t just run from a fire, his kin would he concerned. But instead, they just chock it up to shock. "How is the clan?"
"Everyone got out unharmed." She mews, once she's sure Jayfeather is actually unharmed like she said she is. Then, she towards his littermates with tge same worry in her gaze. "And what about you two?"
"We're both fine, Leafpool." Lionblaze says dully, glancing over his shoulder. The fire is slowly being put out, the rain coming down heavier and heavier by the minute. The clan starts moving away away from where they had take refugee by the lake, and into a more covered part of the forest. The rest of them would be smart to follow.
"Thank Starclan." Leafpool sighs, and turns to find Squirrelflight. Ashfur and Ferncloud have already run back towards the clan, leaving just the deputy and his kits remaining. And they will join their clanmates soon, but only after their father checks on them of course.
Brambleclaw ushers all three of his kits close to him, covering them all in loving licks and nuzzles. Lionblaze let's out a low purr in response, and can't help but hide his face in his father's fur. Like he is a kit once again.
"I kept them safe, like you taught me too." The golden tabby mutters, breathing in Brambleclaw's scent. There was a moment back in the fire, where he thought he'd never see his father again. Now that he is seeing him, Lionblaze doesn't even know if the cat who raised him is his father. Does he even know about the secret Squirrelflight, his own mate, had revealed? Or was he in the dark like the rest of their clanmates?
But, even if they were not kin, he'd done exactly what the dark tabby has raised him to so. He'd shoved Jayfeather out of camp, when the fire reached them, kept their little brother between him and Hollyleaf; guiding him away from the flames. He'd led the three of them after Squirrelflight, and away from danger. He had protected his littermates.
"You did splendidy." Brambleclaw muttered, proud and sincere. He gives Lionblaze and affection nuzzle, one full of so much love it's sickening, and then turns to check on his other littermates; second born still hiding in his fur.
Jayfeather makes a small face at the affection, but does not protest it much like he normally. Only finding a way out of it, and consequently out of the rain as well. "I have to go help Leafpool now." He mutters, sounding despondent. Brambleclaw decides to let it go. He had been trapped in an inferno, after all.
"Of course" He mews, and watches his son pad away, and towards their clanmates. It leaves him with just Hollyleaf and Lionblaze. And one last kit to check up on, Lionblaze no longer hiding his face. He seems to he feeling a bit better now.
"You look upset, Holly." Brambleclaw mutters, giving his daughter a concerned look. She's staring back at the fire, hef green eyes burning like Leafpool's had just minutes ago. The resemblance was uncanny. If Brambleclaw didn't know any better, he could almost believe they were mother and kit.
"I'm fine." She mews reassuringly, giving her father a tight smile. But there's still something dark hiding in her green eyes, something Brambleclaw can't identify. "Just shaken from the fire"
"Okay." Brambleclaw mews, giving her and Lionblaze one mast lick behind the ears. "Come join the clan soon yes? I'll be sending out hunting patrols soon. You two need food and rest." His two eldest mutter their agreement, and then the deputy pads back over to the rest of their clanmates. But sister and brother are bit alone for long, two more familiar cats replacing Brambleclaw almost as soon as he leaves.
"Sandstorm! Firestar!" Hollyleaf says, both her grandparents running up to her and her brother. Lionblaze says nothing, just lets the leader and her mate curl around them worriedly.
"You three are okay, aren't you?" Sandstorm asks, sniffing over them. Like Leafpool hadn't already asked, and like she wouldn't be worrying over them like a mother hen as soon as Squirrelflight's injury was accounted for.
"Yes, we're fine." Hollyleaf nods, her smile still tight. She appreciates the concern, but it is hard to accept it like she used to. Now that Hollyleaf knows that these two cats might not even be her real grandparents...
"I'm so thankful Ashfur was there to help save you." Firestar says, casting a grateful glance over his shoulder, to where the gray warrior is talking with Ferncloud and Cloudtail; his head bows as he repeats the story of their "escape."
Lionblaze stiffens upon hearing the gray warriors name. But Hollyleaf manages to keep it together despite herself. "...Yes, it really was a miracle he was there." She mews. The black she-cat doesn't know what story that mangepelt had told the clan, but she was going to go with it for now. At least until the three of them had more information on their....family history.
"Where’s Jayfeather run off too?" Her grandfather asks, scanning the crowd of cats for his youngest medicine cat. There's still worry in his eyes, worry that comes with leading cats for seasons.
"He's gone to help Leafpool." Hollyleaf tells him. She puts a comfortable tail around Lionblaze's shoulder. Her brother is being oddly silent. She can't blame him for being shaken up. Not after what her and her littermates have just learned..
"She's checking on Squirrelflight, yes?" Firestar asks, scanning the crowd yet again for his daughters. Like he is scared the dying fire had reclaimed one of them, and taken the other with her this time.
"I think so." Lionblaze muttered, his amber eyes glancing back towards the clan. He looked like he longed to join them, to rest comfortably surrounded by his denmates. He must be exhausted from the escape.
"Good." Sandstorm purrs with relief, her shoulders finally able to relax. "I was worried about her wound opening up."
"Come on," Firestar says, starting to leading his grandchildren back towards the clan. "Let's get you two out of the rain and someplace to rest." Sandstorm mutters her agreement, and nudges Hollyleaf and Lionblaze along. They follow the two older cats, pawsteps falling heavily against the ground, dragged down by the things they have learned...
While every cat had greeted the three siblings, Leafpool ushered her sister away from everyone else; needing to check her still recovering wounds, and make sure that none of them had reopened. She tells Jayfeather to go check on the kits again, make sure they're not in shock. Her apprentice just grumbles, but does what he's told.
It was lucky she did too. Though Jayfeather would want to hear what his mother had to tell his sister, she's sure he wouldn't like it. In fact, it probably the last thong he would want to find out.
"Leafpool, they know." Squirrelflight whispered, Leafpool checking over her wound, reapply whatever she needed to with whatever herbs she had.
"They can't." Her sister mewed, horrified. She stopped working unconsciously, paws frozen where they hovered over Squirrelflight's flank. It was the worst news the medicine cat could've ever received. Her sister wished she didn't have to be the one to tell it.
Then again, the only other option was Ashfur, and whatever he would do was certainly unwelcome. Especially after his murder attempt he'd tried only mere minutes ago...
"They do." She mutters, touching her muzzle to Leafpool's comfortingly. Her sister will not be able to resume her work for a few minutes, the shock rotting her paws in place. "We have to talk later."
Once Leafpool is sure she's okay, she let's her sister go, and goes to double check Hollyleaf and Lionblaze. Squirrelflight leaves reluctantly. There is so much she needs to share with her sister, so much they need to discuss. But with the clan like this, there are too many listening ears nearby, and no good chances to sneak off.
Plus, their parents, Firestar and Sandstorm, were already trotting over to see her. And she couldn't run off without them seeing her. It wouldn't be fair.
Squirrelflight buries her face into his mother's warm fur for the first time since she was an apprentice, and Sandstorm has no idea why. She thinks it's because if the fire, of being trapped within it, that had scared her so much. Squirrelflight wishes it was just that.
She wishes what had happened back in that fire could've been so simple as just a falling tree.

I'm thinking I may have to change the prophecy to be that "the kin of tiger will hold the power of the stars in their paws" bec I can't come up with a good reason for Hawkfrost and Whitewing to have kits...
In RoC Hawkfrost/star is going to be one of the big bads of po3 and he will be peak evil at the point that, whoever Dove and Ivy's mom is, would get pregnant. So I can't see Whitewing having an affair with him at that point, she knows he's a bad dude. Also I don't see why Hawk would go out of his way to have kits with a cat from another order (making them more likely to be born and raised in a different order) when he could have them with an outsider or cat from River order. I can def see Hawk being motivated to have kits in his order as he would want to create possible successors to his leadership that he could mold. So if anything I think Hawk would want to have Kits with another River Order cat.
Plus I kinda want Hawkstar and Ashfall to become mates (and with the new succession rules thats how Ash is made Hawk's Deputy). Tho I suppose that wouldn't stop Hawkstar from being unfaithful lol.
...
Sooooo I'm thinking my idea for Jay misinterpreting Firestar's dream is pretty much the same. Fire has the same dream i described, the ancient cat has come to warn Firestar that his daughter was the one to birth the 3, and Jay assumes that the prophecy is that Firestar's daughter will birth the 3. But in truth the prophecy is that Tigerstar's kin will be the 3 and Firestar's dream was ment to warn Fire that his daughter had birthed these prophecised kin of Tigerstar.
The 3 eventually learn the truth and their minds are blown to find out that the prophecy wasn't that they were kin of Fire but kin of Tiger instead!
Maybe Jay and Falcon don't learn this until they start searching for the true 3rd cat. And they overlook Dove for a while because they assume the 3rd will be a kin of Firestar. Idk but I can work with this 🤔
New plan for the Po3 prophecy!
Instead of Jay knowing the full prophecy (which is this au is that “the Kin of Fire and Tiger will hold the power of the stars in their paws”), he only knows part of it.

heyo dear mutual, I love the way you make the cats patterns, do you have any tips? I'm trying to help a friend but I'm not very good at explaining
thank you sm!!!!
half of it is just fuck around and find out, the other half is taking specific inspiration from either part of the name, their personality, or some sort of thing they did in canon (with some amount of inspiration from their canon description, some are more like how their described, for others i completely disregard canon)
———
for the name related inspiration, sometimes it manifests relatively plainly (ex: whitewing on the left) or its more abstract (ex: icewing on the right)
both cats have the suffix -wing but i wanted to represent them in different ways. for icewing i searched up birds in the cold and looked at the images for a bird that inspired me, which ended up being the downy woodpecker. for whitewing i wanted her to be simple and cute, so i ended up giving her the simple wing pattern.
its all really off of what makes me go “yeah that works”!
personality inspired designs are less common but i still do them occasionally. purdy is a kind old man that everyone loves so i just. covered him in hearts, not much deeper than that
action inspired designs are again less common, i only really do it if its iconic for the character, such as the fire scene for ashfur, so thats what i used as inspiration for his designs
———
i dont know if i over-explained or didnt explain enough, please let me know! if nothing else id say just have fun, mess around until it looks right!

what do you think would‘ve happened if Bluestar had developed feelings for Thrushpelt upon seeing how good he was with her kits?
Alas, it changes nothing to the Thistleclaw situation. She has to give up the kits.
However we might think she would trust him enough to put him in on the plan and she gets him to help her carry them. Mosskit is saved.
For narrative parallels purposes, the Erins give Silverstream three kits who will be apprenticed to Mistyfoot (Featherpaw), Stonefur (Stormpaw) and Mosslight (Willowpaw).
Feathertail and Stormfur are not each other's whole kin since they've got another sibling (let's say Willow is female and warrior name is Willowbark). Stormfur doesn't go with Feathertail in Midnight. There's no Chosen One to get back to Riverclan after Feathertail's death. Willowbark and Stormfur are now each other's whole kin, which means Stormfur will not stay with the tribe.
Mosslight's survival also means Hawkfrost is not the first in line to be temporary deputy. She becomes temporary deputy and leads search patrols. When Mistyfoot is freed, she resigns from deputyship and lets Mistyfoot get her role back.
Everything else happens, except Stormfur is not kicked out of Riverclan. Mosslight becomes Mistystar’s deputy, but is killed in the Great Battle. Mistystar then choses Reedwhisker and the rest is history.
Now what would be interesting is if, after she became a leader, Bluestar had a second litter, this time with Thrushpelt. I don’t think she would, because of the guilt of having abandonned the first. But let’s say she does. Three kits. Named Moonkit, Rainkit and Eaglekit because of family links and whatnot. They’ll be refered to as Moonfur, Rainfall and Eaglefeather later on.
Three more warriors in Into the Wild. Maybe more if they have kits. No need for Rusty. Bluestar decides she won’t take the risk to take in one more mouth to feed, particularly a kittypet kitten, and will seek Fire somewhere else.
Then we have two possibilities stemming from here.
- Rainfall discovers Tigerclaw’s treachery and basically takes Fireheart’s role in the plot with a few deviations. They also discover that they have half-siblings in Riverclan.
- No one is the wiser and Tigerclaw takes controle of Thunderclan.
The first one is basically an AU where Fireheart is Bluestar’s son so I won’t take it. The second I don’t like either because it feels like just too much to explain in all the possible ways.
So let’s think up a third.
Moonfur and Redtail get together. Moonfur becomes Sandstorm’s mother.
Seeing a red kit be born from her blood (particularly with the fact it makes no sense dna-wise but... erins amirite), Bluestar suggests that they call her firekit and is now convinced Sandstorm (or, rather, Firestorm) is the One.
And so she treats Firestorm like she treated Fireheart.
Dustpelt and Firestorm are made warriors early. They are given apprentices early. Ravenpaw is slaughtered by Tigerclaw and Graypaw, sloppy as he is, becomes a warrior at the same time as Swiftpaw, around Forest of Secrets (the only reason Swiftpaw didn’t get his warrior name before Brackenfur, who was younger than him, was because he wasn’t there during I don’t know what battle, but his absence was due to FIreheart’s decisions, which Firestorm doesn’t take the same way). Swiftpaw becomes Swiftheart.
No Gray x Silver because of the timing of their first meeting. Let’s say Cinderpaw still gets hurt. But no Cloudkit/paw/tail.
Firestorm is none the wiser until she goes to check on her grandmother during the rogues attack and prevents Tigerclaw from killing her. Bluestar exiles him and starts spiraling down. She names Firestorm her new deputy. Gives her Fernpaw as her apprentice (and, on Firestorm’s suggestion, Ashpaw to Dustpelt).
As for the new couples here’s a brief summary:
Swiftheart x Brightheart (will have Whitewing)
Thornclaw x Ferncloud (will have all of DustFern’s canon kids)
Firestorm x Dustpelt (will have the FireSand canon kids)
(yes I tend to consider that the mother gets the kids when I change the pairings)
Anyway.
It goes basically like in canon. Sandstorm was not any less smart than Fireheart, and was actually more socially/emotionally intelligent, so there’s no reason she doesn’t figure out the whole dog pack and windclan thing etc. Actually that emotional/social intelligence gives her the advantage here: when she stands in for Bluestar after the fire, and Tigerclaw arrives all “i’m head of shadowclan now”-y, she actually tells everyone that the storm is here to support here not to silent her, since she’s is named -storm. She tells everyone what’s going on. Shadowclan probably still supports Tigerstar because... Starclan approved of him, and they’re still too weak to be left alone without leadership.
But his close guard, Blackfoot and others, don’t trust him as much as they did before. Actually it could be the start of self reflection for Blackfoot. Realizing he betrayed his clan without realizing it by bringing Tigerclaw in. Realizing some things are true while not being perceptible by him and so on. Boulder might think it best not to mention Blood Clan. Also... maybe Leopardfur/star is not going to trust him so easily, now.
Bluestar dies.
Firestorm becomes leader under the name Firestar.
She choses her mate Dustpelt as her deputy. He doesn’t die and neither do Whitestorm (who only died so that Graystripe could become deputy).
They get SquirrelLeaf. Skyclan is never revived since Firestorm would listen to Starclan and not go. I know Sandstorm did go but she was going with her mate and leader, she didn’t have to take, herself, the decision to tell Starclan to go eff themselves and to leave her clan for who knows how long.
She does the same deeds as Fireheart did basically. No Darktail because no Skyclan means no Alderheart going and all.
That alas means Alderpaw keeps being fascinated by Needlepaw and even when a full medicine cat, they keep meeting. Needletail ends up giving birth to Alderheart’s kits and refuses to give the name of the father, which is not as accepted as it was for, say, Silverstream or Bluestar, because Needletail is known to be lackadaisical with the warrior code’s application. Everybody suspects a father from out of the clan, but no one has any proof.
Alderheart’s kids end up being called Violetkit and Twigkit and might become the heroines of their own prophecy or something, with the same complicated relationship to kin they have in canon. But here they’re together and have less damage as they had when both split and one of them in the Kin and the other changing clans all the time.
TL;DR: If Bluestar had developped feelings for Thrushpelt along the way, Sandstorm would have been the Fire to Save the Clan, and Needletail would have been Twig and Violet’s mother.

All of Whitewing's art I have saved. I sent this through a private post initially but then realized you can send pictures through the ask box now and this is much more convenient.
The first nine are Across Space and Time series. The last two are misc pieces that I remembered and was able to locate. I think there might be one or two more I'm forgetting though.
Hello everyone! Long time no see.
I know I haven't posted on here in ages -- to be honest, life has gotten in the way of things, and my interests and focus have changed somewhat over the years going through and out of college now. I would love to return to working on this blog project again one day, but for now, I sadly have to say I'm going to put it on hold indefinitely. I'm very sorry for the few submitters who have been waiting for me to reply for eons! If I ever return to doing this, I will look at your submissions first thing (unless your interests have moved on at that point too -- I totally get that).
With that said, I wanted to make this final post since I realized I never reblogged this. It was brought to my mind due to @dazais-guardian-angel - I just saw that you sent me a message back in August about this (sorry for not seeing it sooner!).
Back in the day I made a post asking for people to help me find WhiteWings. She was a wonderful artist who made beautiful fanart for Blumiere and Timpani. Her original account is gone now sadly; I heard she had made a new account back in the day to get away from some drama, but so far, I haven't been able to find it.
HOWEVER, kind souls like @disneydreamlights and @spacedimentio (hi again, fellas!) sent me some of her art that they had saved. You can see Dreamlight's message to me above -- there are a few more with more art I will post momentarily.
Anyway, I hope that this helps you collect her art, Dazai, as well as anyone else who remembers WhiteWings and wishes to see her art again. I hope she is doing well, wherever she is!

cloudtail’s daughter au
so i decided to do a full write-up of this au instead of doing a second post to cover books 4-6 and then everything will be self-contained.
the essence of this au is pretty simple: dovewing does not, imo, fulfill the prophecy by being the granddaughter of firestar’s nephew, because that’s at least 3 “kin” away from him. so while i think she’d actually have to be princess’ daughter to fit, i’ll let her be firestar’s grandniece and call that “close enough” because it’s better.
anyway, there’s no real reason for this to change anything, but i think given who cloudtail and brightheart are, and how close dovewing and ivypool are to whitewing, it would probably change quite a few things.
[4k words. 15 minute read. proper section headers.]
this is a big summary so i’m sure i’ll forget things, i’ve already had to add in the events caused by the dovewing/tigerheart romance/conflict that carries through the first three books, and that cloudtail being an atheist has a major effect on ivypaw. i know i wrote a detailed summary of the first arc, where i didn’t forget any of that, but nothing exists for the second arc. anyway this au is tagged cloudtail’s daughter and apparently i have a lot to say about it so i’m sure if you click on the tag you can find info about it. assuming this isn’t the first thing i post. which it might be.
section one: things that don’t happen
so i don’t want this to be a po3 rewrite, which means i’m going to take a moment to explicitly discuss what doesn’t change.
first, po3 stays pretty much exactly the same. i want jayfeather to be a warrior too. i also want him to be dovewing’s brother. but the au where brightheart gives birth to dovekit, anxiety child, and jaykit, blind, and feels like a failure despite the fact that its not like her half-blindness is genetic, is not this au. that is another au.
anyway, hollyleaf does keep herself more together, because she needs to be alive for some family drama. she’s in background character hell (BGCH) for a while, though, especially the first book.
she still goes to the tunnels, mind, she just comes out sooner.
but otherwise, despite my personal tastes, i’m not changing po3 very much.
section two: brightheart’s litters
okay so cloudtail and brightheart have four children, i believe, and my choice is either to replace whitewing, or to replace the others. now, i don’t particularly care for either of these options, but i’d rather they have their second litter younger, so we’re replacing amber/dew/snow. this still lets you have old queen drama, but not so much that you’re like “brightheart how on god’s green earth did you have 3 children with no issues”
instead, she’ll have dovekit and ivykit at about the same time whitewing had them.
now, for complicated cat genetic reasons, cloudtail could have been a black cat. now, here me out: what i mean is, if he wasn’t white, he could be black. basically, white is a masking color in cats, it goes on top of whatever pattern they would have displayed. both he and brightheart would have to inherit one dilute gene (princess was not dilute, so she had to carry it), and then either dovewing or brightheart are tortie, and that’s the best i can do for keeping dovewing grey.
i, personally, lean towards tortie brightheart, because i always pictured her that way, but i have seen some pretty cute tortie dovewing.
ivykit inherits red from her mother, and is tortie either way, because tortie ivypool is cute.
in fact, i’ve been tinkering with the idea that ivykit and dovekit have kind of mirrored grey and cream spots. not, like, perfectly mirrored, because that’s not how tortoiseshell/calico (they would technically be calico, since they have white) works, but close enough to be cute.
section three: arc one (summary)
these books are going to have six protagonists (dovekit, lionblaze, cinderheart, hollyleaf, jayfeather, ivypool, in that order) with a secondary character who gets less chapters but the most important b-plot (ivykit, hollyleaf, lionblaze, jayfeather, cinderheart, dovewing).
arc one focuses on “two braincells” i.e., dovewing, lionblaze, and cinderheart (sorry bb, ur not like the other two, but i’m putting you somewhere) and the main theme is dovepaw learning to manage her power. it’s a tug and pull between dovewing: glass canon, and dovewing: can’t do shit.
cinderheart and lionblaze also have a romance going on, which irritates ivypaw, who has a bit of a catalyst with the dark forest in the middle/end of the arc (like in the original). we only get this through external perspecives, though, because when this happens, lionblaze is in the secondary position.
one of the ways to fix this book series is to decouple it from ivy and dove, much as i love them. both the beavers and the dark forest make up a b-plot in this arc, while the quest for the third prophecy cat, as well as growing tensions between clans, take center stage, and lionblaze and cinderheart work in the second and third book to give us the adult perspective of the tension that dovekit and ivykit can’t in the first book.
mostly, this is fairly low stakes. part of that is because characters are having stakes appropriate for them, rather than smeared around in a book. (looking @ u, flametail buddy). so dovekit/paw spends her first book worried about apprentice things and doesn’t get to narrate again until the end of the series.
section four: book one — growing shadows
i think the fourth apprentice is a stupid name, okay?
so book one is dovekit and ivykit, for pretty obvious reasons.
although actually i’m pushing off the beavers in this to book two or three. i’m not 100% sure where i want that, yet.
so anyway, dovekit is born and wow is she anxiety child. (i call dovewing anxiety child a lot, because, well, she is? i feel like it’s sort of implicit in the books and i’m making it explicity.) anyway, she’s in sensory overload like 100% of the time. see, she was born late, and so she didn’t have her powers kick in over time like lionblaze and jayfeather. nope. she got the adult version right away.
so she spends a lot of time hiding with cloudtail because he’s big and fluffy and not complicated to look at. cloudtail and brightheart are understandibly pretty worried about her, because no one really knows what to do about it. she’s skittish and distractable and extremely sensitive. she hates going out in the rain, hates bright sun, etc.
(side note: dovekit’s powers extend to pretty much all her senses. she can see, hear, and smell much farther than she should, and she can taste and feel much more strongly than an other cat.)
ivykit doesn’t feel unloved, but she does know her sister is getting more attention, and that always kind of hurts, even if you’re understanding.
cloudtail and brightheart work to try to help dovekit get on her feet, but they’re not super successful. she learns to cope enough to be able to function as a kit, but she’s always kind of a strange, quiet kit. she doesn’t know how to talk about seeing too much because she doesn’t realize its too much.
dove is given to cinderheart, because lionblaze is a terrible mentor for small anxiety child, and ivy is given to lionblaze. this will also create drama later, just wait.
so the main plot of this book is keyed into dovepaw learning to hunt. the stakes are pretty low, honestly. they’re mounting around dovepaw and ivypaw, but the girls are too young to properly understand everything.
dovepaw is initially successful hunting due to some luck and being good at spotting prey, but she can’t replicate it. ivypaw only trains with her a bit at first, and she sees this success, and feels like her parents’ attention on dovepaw made dovepaw better than her.
this gets ivypaw into the dark forest. this is the b-plot: ivypaw training, realizing she made a mistake, and not knowing how to get out. plus, she doesn’t have to mind her sister. (ivypaw is raised by an atheist, so while she’s smart enough to eventually work out that these cats are evil, she doesn’t have a sunshine and rainbows view of starclan. that’s the only way i can justify her not being smart enough to nope the fuck out of there, even if she is really young and really angry.)
in clan life, ivypaw knows she needs to look out for dovepaw. she doesn’t mind, but she gets to experience a life without that in the dark forest.
dovepaw does mind how everyone treats her like she’s made of glass. she sees cinderheart talking to brightheart and jayfeather and firestar and feels like everyone thinks she’s useless. so she decides to go out on her own and prove she can function.
dovepaw starts sneaking out at night and she finds the tunnels. her senses dampened, she panicks, running deeper and deeper, getting lost. fallen leaves will find her, and help get her strength up and then get her out. kind of like with hollyleaf, who is out of the caves by now.
ivypaw sees everyone searching for dovepaw and starts to feel guilty about wanting more attention, and the fact that part of why she wants dovepaw back is so people pay attention to ivypaw again. she also feels responsible for this.
cinderheart is distraught, because she really did care about dovepaw, and it’s been three days, her scent tracked to the tunnels but it was raining and no one has seen her since, so she’s probably dead.
ivypaw, grieving, refuses to accept that dovepaw is dead and she hunts outside the tunnel mouth until she thinks she hears something.
dove and ivy reunite and return to the clan. ivypaw’s convictions that dovepaw needs to be protected are strengthened, and dovepaw knows she failed in her goal. everyone is happy to see them.
we get some fretting about how washed out everything is, how the rain didn’t even stick because the soil is so dry. that’s a cue to the drought, which will be a bigger deal next book.
section five: book two — fading echoes
honestly i’m not attached to book titles, but this works here too.
so this book is split between lionblaze and hollyleaf. i’m pretty sure hollyleaf is out of the caves by now, but i haven’t decided if she’s rejoined the clans. she feels strongly for fallen leaves: they’re listed as mates on the warrior cats wiki, and if hollyleaf and jayfeather are both going to have ancient dead ghost mates, she’s at least going to visit hers. her end goal is to get him to starclan so they can be together after her death.
anyway, this is beavers book. i don’t have a ton to say about it because it’s pretty much the same, except hollyleaf goes with dovepaw and cinderheart and she’s our pov as dovepaw falls for tigerheart because (and this is my understanding of her logic in the books to begin with): “big fluffy tom is safe fluffy tom.”
lionblaze feels the disconnect between him and ivypaw, but he can’t help that cinderheart is away. ivypaw is clearly preoccupied, but he can’t tell with what. his larger conflict is in finding the third cat.
this isn’t a filler book, per say. the tree falls and that happens, and lionblaze gets thrown into rebuilding camp. ivypaw feels doubly abandoned. lionblaze tries to win her affection, but he doesn’t know how.
beaver crew gets back. dovepaw has stars in her eyes. ivypaw is close to passing her warrior assessment, but lionblaze can tell she’s holding back because she doesn’t want to leave dovepaw. dovepaw can hunt by now, but she can’t really split her attention.
she’s scared of going into battle.
after a border skirmish where dovepaw just freezes, ideas of her being a medicine cat are raised.
ivypaw sees tigerheart in the dark forest, and she goes all bluefur being like “snowfur ur bf has rabies” on dovepaw, who is not happy with this. ivypaw pushes dovepaw to be a medicine cat because of this. the sisters are squabbling and barely talking.
book ends.
section six: book three — distant whispers
again not 100% sold on the names.
so this is cinderheart’s book, and she’s going to figure this out, because dovepaw and ivypaw are falling apart, and dovepaw deserves to be a warrior. so she convinces firestar to let her and lionblaze take ivypaw and dovepaw to the mountains. she believes, well, i’m not sure i haven’t worked that part out.
anyway, they go.
the tribe is like “yeah the world sure is a big place with a lot to look at. that’s why only half of us look.” (i know that’s not exactly how cave guard’s work but close enough.)
cinderheart is like “hm. what if, dovepaw, just a thought, what if you just, you know, avoid battles? i know it’s part of clan life but judging by the two souls crammed into my body, i’d say there’s been very few major conflicts over this and, reasonably, you should be able to avoid being chosen for battle control.”
dovepaw says, “but cinderheart, i’m a main character! unless i’m being punished or taught a lesson about duty, i’ll be automatically registered for every battle patrol until i die!”
cindheart says, “you’re right, i’m so sorry. hey ivypaw, [whoops yeah ivy and lion are here too sorry i forgot to mention that] what if you two learn to work as a team.”
dovepaw says, “i don’t want to work with her.”
ivypaw says, “that’s a great idea.”
because dovepaw talks very quietly (she forgets not everyone can hear as well as her), ivypaw wins.
they spend at least a month in the tribe, maybe longer, i’m not sure. eventually, they decide to go back. dovepaw is never happy in the tribe, it’s way too loud all the time, but she does manage to sort out her hunting issues, and so fighting is left.
so there’s still a big push for dovepaw to consider maybe being a medicine cat.
but that is not this au. this is the jaywing/dovefeather au where they basically switch roles. there’s a really good fic where dovepaw goes to riverclan for a while that i love and anyway this au is a as-close-as-possible to canon au for me to rectify my issues with dovewing in canon (nominally, i don’t have any, but i think her character was displayed…curiously, and i’m mad about the prophecy.)
ivypaw is team medicine cat. cinderheart and lionblaze are struggling. cinderheart eventually teaches dovepaw an extension of the techniques of the tribe, and they work out that dovepaw can kind of, track the cats she’s with to anchor herself in battle. this means dovepaw no longer is tied to ivypaw for her success, and so they both become warriors.
while they’re still in the tribe, ivypaw has time away from the dark forest and lionblaze finally puts two and two together, and that basically makes up the b-plot for the back half of the book, lionblaze trying to get ivypaw to admit what’s going on and then trying to help her.
dovewing’s senses begin to return but since they come back slowly she’s able to manage them. so she quickly excels in hunting.
ivypool cottons on to the dark forest breeding loyalty between its members, not to their original clans, and realizes that this is going to threaten all four of the clans.
end book with a bang, end first arc. we will now turn to the actually-have-more-than-two-braincells crew (sorry cinderheart, you don’t deserve to be in this group, but your prefix doesn’t end in -y, so you can’t be with jay/holly/ivy in the brainy crew.)
section seven: arc 2 (summary)
so this arc is when the main conflict (dark forest battle) becomes obvious. dovewing’s problems have been sorted out, so she’s pushed into BGCH for a little bit while the smart adults sort things out.
book three ends with ivypool realizing the dark forest isn’t a personal problem, but a clan-group (like, all of the clans together? not sure how to call it) sized problem. ivypool, jayfeather, and hollyleaf together manage to sort out a lot of the dark forest’s eventual plan, and they try to sort out a way to solve it. then the battle happens. that’s basically the summary?
in here, the clans start working together way sooner and the prophecy comes out way faster.
section eight: book 4 — the forgotten character
alright, hollyleaf is liberated from BGCH. actual title is still the forgotten warrior.
hollyleaf and ivypool start to bond, and hollyleaf is convinced all the clans need to know about what’s up.
ivypool disagrees, and they talk about it like rational people.
hollyleaf and fallen leaves are still cute.
jayfeather has his timetravel thing in this book so he can do flametail’s job in the next book. he gets to talk to hollyleaf and fallen leaves about it.
i don’t think i’d mess with jayfeather and briarlight’s relationship in this au, because i think it’s sweet in canon as is, but you know i have thoughts about half moon and briarlight. anyway, jayfeather gets his book next, this is about hollyleaf.
fallen leaves helps hollyleaf learn to control, idk, spirit dream travel? jayfeather helps with this too. hollyleaf has to share extra hard with jayfeather because she took up a disproportionate amount of time in lionblaze’s book.
so anyway, hollyleaf is learning to travel into the dark forest. similar to the way dark forest cats leave it? but in reverse. this is the main plot.
like the second book, it’s not really filler, so much as lower stakes, and like the second book, i don’t have a ton to say about it because the plot is self evident. unfortunately, hollyleaf has the two “chill” books. sorry bb.
anyway, this is building into jayfeather going all angry old man yells at sky at starclan next book, so the biggest conflict in this book is hollyleaf realizing she can just, leave. she can go back in time the way jayfeather did, but on purpose, save fallen leaves, and they can be alive.
i mean, that wouldn’t actually work, not the least because i’m not keen on hollyleaf being a reincarnation, espcially in the reincarnation-lite universe, but also because she can’t save fallen leaves, then he wouldn’t be a sharpclaw, not really, and like a whole host of other issues but anyway
at the end of power of three, hollyleaf runs away from her problems. this book is about her standing up to defend them.
i don’t know if she explicitly breaks up with fallen leaves, but they have a falling out that won’t get resolved until after the great battle. this is a mutual/not mutual thing where they both know that fallen leaves is stopping hollyleaf from fully committing to helping her clans now, but they love each other.
relationship conflict that isn’t forbidden romance.
speaking of, ivypool getting close to hollyleaf means that the two of them start to reconnect with their siblings. hollyleaf’s actions alienated her from jayfeather and lionblaze and she kind of just was sad and apologetic but they didn’t want to forgive her.
(sorry hollybush, says jayfeather,
that’s not my name, says hollyleaf,
oh, says jayfeather, guess i forget. well anyway, i have a new sister now. her name is dovewing.
dovewing?, says hollyleaf. but you don’t like her.
it’s okay, says jayfeather, she never tore my family to shreds and then abandoned me to deal with the fallout.)
(jayfeather and hollyleaf always seemed closer to me than lionblaze and either of them, until hollyleaf’s whole event. anyway he remains petty about everything and lionblaze stands by him because, well, he’s not wrong, also dovewing is important to cinderheart so he feels like he should be on her side on this which means jayfeather’s side. even though cinderheart is friends with hollyleaf look i said lionblaze is a loveable dumbass already, didn’t i?)
so anyway hollyleaf is sad and ivypool sees that and is like “hm maybe i shouldn’t be a petty bitch for no reason” and this is fine until after this series is over when dovewing and tigerheart are like “bitch we gon b together”
dovewing’s emotions get jayfeather to, well, not go back on his actions, but recognize hollyleaf is the most effective person to work with. because lionblaze and dovewing are just. so dumb.
and yeah this book ends with things feeling almost hopeful.
section nine: book 5 — sign of the moon
i cannot overstate how little i care about the titles of these books.
anyway, jayfeather and cinderheart.
i don’t have a ton of thoughts about this one. jayfeather reunites starclan, cinderheart helps convince ivypool and dovewing to work together. this is the book where clans find out about the propechy but not the dark forest that is for next book
they know something is coming, but everyone agrees not to give ivypool away yet. they like her, you know, alive.
anyway, i don’t have much to say because it’s pretty obvious what happens, because this is just a bunch of events from other books crammed into this book, now, and they’ve been written and i don’t see the need to make many changes.
cinderheart and lionblaze have kit drama, maybe? cinderheart counsels dovewing about tigerheart, maybe? my point is it’s not super important.
the book ends with the two warriors to every camp. and dovewing, jayfeather, and lionblaze, are going to get split up.
this is my biggest change so far imo because it’s the most plot relevant.
dovewing is going to shadowclan with ivypool. jayfeather is going to windclan with…i’m not sure yet? i don’t want him going to riverclan because leafpool has ties to riverclan and, well, i want jayfeather to get a chance to stand on his own. and lionblaze goes to riverclan, with either cinderheart or hollyleaf.
jayfeather is super grumbly about this, but admits that it’s important as a show of unity, and also, he’s pretty functional in wind clan? like they’re all playing to their strengths.
jayfeather learns to navigate pretty quickly, dovewing appreciates quiet and also not being that-strange-cat who everyone is super careful around, and lionblaze is big and gregarious and enjoys riverclan being chill and friendly. so yeah, people get a chance to chill and be happy.
ivypool is in position to be angsty next book.
end book.
section ten: book 6 — the last hope
despite my claim that the biggest change is sending the three to different clans, i don’t have a lot to say about it.
basically, well, okay
first, we see ivypool and dovewing again. reminder that last time we were in one of their heads, they were apprentices. in book one.
dovewing couldn’t even hunt last time we had her pov.
so there’s a few chapters to some characterization that happens. dovewing is no longer anxiety child. she’s somewhat shy, she’s soft spoken, but she’s not skittish. you can’t surprise her. and she’s intense. she’ll just stare at you with wide eyes if you come talk to her until you say something she wants to respond to.
ivypool sees why dovewing and tigerheart are good together. she’s still not supportive, but, like, he understands her. he doesn’t treat her like she’s fragile, but he also is kind and forgiving and soft to her.
plus he’s a total simp for dovewing. that helps.
anyway, ivypool gets along fairly well in shadowclan. i don’t have ton of thoughts about this.
ivypool, hollyleaf/cinderheart, and jayfeather’s companion, as well as half of the other cats away on missions, are acting as messengers between their host clans and their home clans. that’s how ivypool gets to find out about info. they meet on the island every morning. or something.
anyway, this bit is where i most hate the set up of this with two pov per book hard cap because it’d be cool to see into everyone else’s head but that’s for novellas and side stories.
the battle happens.
everything sucks. dovewing has basically committed to tigerheart, but bramblestar’s storm messes with the timeline.
and that’s pretty much it.
section eleven: what’s next?
so i swore i wasn’t starting new fic and then i thought of this and now i do want to write it so, maybe?
the most important thing is:
tl/dr: the reason dovewing shouldn’t have been a prophecy cat is because she’s not the kin of firestar’s kin.

The Three AU
Ivypool turned to look at her sister as she took in the sight of the wrecked camp. Dovewing was gripping the ground tightly and her eyes were looking around frantically. “I feel like I'm going to die Ivypool,” she whimpered. Ivypool wrapped her tail around her. “It's probably nothing, you're just nauseous after the battle.”
Dovewing shook her head and went still.
“What more could I have done for the clan?” she murmured. Her eyes began to close and she collapsed. Ivypool let out a shriek of horror, and shook her sister. Her chest wasn't rising, she wasn't breathing.
She was dead.
She looked around, horrified. Lionblaze and Jayfeather had fallen too, and Leafpool and Squirrelflight swarmed their bodies in horror.
“They've lost all their kits,” Ivypool thought, her legs going numb. She was vaguely aware of Whitewing and Birchfall around her, but all she could look at was Dovewing's body. She looked so peaceful, her legs spread out as though wings. Why were they dead? They weren't wounded badly enough. They certainly weren't sick either, so why would StarClan call them up so early? None of the three did anything wrong, so why?
Ivypool wasn't aware the words were pouring out of her mouth until she felt the stares of her clanmates burning her pelt. She stared back wordlessly, and bolted to the camp exit, and her paws seemed to know where she was going.
The Moonpool. StarClan would have the answers, and if they didn't, she'd get them from Dovewing herself.
Au where the three died immediately after the great battle. They were no longer needed alive, and were a threat to StarClan's power.
Ivypool immediately grows spiteful of StarClan and searches for her sister's spirit to right the wrongs the stars inflicted

"Alm, have you been to archanea?"
The question felt like it came out of nowhere, but Alm none the less was eager to answer it, lips turning to a simple smile as he recalled how he had come to go to the country proper. “It was a little after the war ended that I went, you know? Once, and without really dropping by anywhere considered… important. We were just escorting the Whitewings to port, you know.” Raising his left hand, he rolls his wrist in a ‘so forth and so on fashion’. “They had to head on home, and we weren’t about to let them leave without seeing them off! But at the pier… there was a man standing there. A merchant. He hailed us all over, informed us it was dangerous to cross the waters now.”
He pauses for a brief moment. “There were a lot of pirates, so he wanted to ask us to escort his ship. Well… we figured if it was that dangerous, we couldn’t just send the Whitewings by themselves and be on our way… so we all went. Celica, Mathilda, the sisters… all of us just piled on in.”
He laughs, remembering how odd it was to just suddenly be stuck together in a single ship, no matter how large it was. Sure, it wasn’t the whole army, just those close to him and Celica, but it had still been quite the trip. Still, his expression turns serious after.
“Our stay… wasn’t for very long, we arrived to a place called Furias after… a lot of fighting; that man wasn’t kidding at all. But in the port we found… a little something about a place the locals called Thabes Laberynth. A name I only vaguely remember from Rigelian scriptures from Duma— and I wished I had paid attention then. Supposedly, there was treasure inside, and many a young man had gone in search for fortune… but only few had gotten out. We were curious, of course— something like that could mean there were bandits hiding there, making off with the lives of the youth. So we went.”
Alm’s gaze, which had remained steady until then, fell to his hands as he quieted.
“What we found there was…”
“… It was unlike anything I ever saw.”

Group Profile: The Shooting Star
In a day and age where media is as accessible as breathing, news coverage is a hot business. The Shooting Star is a group who covers news on trends and current events happening in the Reject Cites. They stay as bias free as possible but they do try to lean to covering news that leaves a much more positive impact, yet don’t shy away from exposing the underbelly of society. Key Members are listed under the cut. (All Character designs featured are not final. Profile pictures currently made with Picrew)
Tora Yama, a former freelance reporter who now solely writes stories for Shooting Star. He has a good grasp on the world around him and isn’t afraid to toss critisim as needed no matter who his target is. Due to his reputation as a sharp tounged reporter however, he’s regularly chased down by people who oppose his approach with threats of violence. As such, Tora enlists the aide of the remnants of Black Flag to accompany him to interviews as to break up any would be assaults to his person.
Starlight Movement's sudden gain in popularity was partly due to his mocking nature of the group in an article. He didn’t believe their mission was possible and could have serious consequences for everyone involved, until another key member of Shooting Star joined them.
Lucy Whitewing, Shooting Star’s owner and one of it’s main speakers. Having experience in the music industry, she mainly covers it in her podcasts and videos for the group. She, much like Tora doesn’t have much faith in Starlight Movement’s goal as their approach didn’t seem feasible in her eyes. She always has something to criticize about Shintaro in particular as her belief that “A child’s view of the world at large can only be trusted if they’ve seen all it has to offer”. She understands more of why Shintaro does this when she herself saves an escaped Grail City resident.
(Pre-Makeover)
(Post Make-Over)
283 aka Flint, a former Grail City resident. Flint never really took to the mental conditioning that his fellow residents underwent, but out of fear for the contaminated cities below he feigned it for a good portion of his life. Present day, when he’s only 18, Flint got into a terrible accident with the car manufacturing plant he was assigned to. The resulting explosion killed a lot of his fellow workers but as if by pure chance, he survived. He was taken to a hospital but it was found out during that time, that he wasn’t under the affects of the Grail City’s influence.
In his fleeing to prevent himself from being killed, he finds Lucy who he begs to protect him. Hiding him in her home, she learns from him about the horrors much like Shintaro did from Clover.
Knowing that he’d be hunted down, Lucy gives Flint not only a name but a total make over. Flint then becomes her new co-host on her podcast to help get more information out about the horrors of the Grail Cities. Flint, while soft spoken is highly intelligent, learning a lot about the city he lived in to the point that he provided an escape route to another resident out of fear of being killed.
Koibito Unmei, a photographer and cameraman. Being tasked with covering other idols, Kobito has formed a close relationship with several ones he’s filmed which can be concidered to be bad. A particular one is an idol by the handle of Crescent, who’s rough attitude is for the most part hated by the rest of Shooting Star, even Flint.
Koibito has a hard weakness for cats, and Mochi, the cat belonging to Crescent is the only motivation he has for doing interviews with him.
As focus shifts to Starlight Movement, all members of the group start to cover the group’s influence while also doing digging of their own.
But as they keep searching, Lucy and her team find something out about the leader of Starlight’s rival and rebellion co-leader Xio that they all wish they hadn’t found out.
