So so so excited to share this character!! I drew this back in early August when I got to do a session 0 for a post-apocalypse IRL setting (...MERICA) kids (adults) on bikes campaign!

This is my character, Terry, bigender canto-canadian from Montreal. There's a running joke that we should all just play ourselves since it was a real world setting but I was like how about me a little to the left? Ok long ramble ahead but speaking of Pyro and gender, even before I fully knew what tf2 was I remember the whole "...he's not here, is she?" line sticking so firmly in my head that it is unreal

I must have been like 13 at the time so idk how I even stumbled across the whole "what exactly is Pyro's gender" part of tf2/the fanbase without knowing much of anything else about the game but I was absolutely fascinated with how in that clip from meet the Pyro, Scout seemed to just effortlessly switch pronouns, and the resulting confusion and mystery the switch caused in my mind

I'd always been fascinated with androgyny, especially the idea of women who were seen outwardly as men and just kinda lived like that, not denying that they were women but also not correcting those who thought otherwise. It felt like a big cool secret to me that a woman could just do that (back when I was like 13 before I knew much more about tf2 I actually was a firm "Pyro is secretly a woman" believer)

Well I always thought it was for feminist reasons that I liked the whole "I am no man"-type reveal but there was this continuing fascination with gender confusion that seemed to extend beyond "girl power" idea. I remember making an oc with an ambiguous gender and alternating he/she pronouns (ironically he wears a gas mask and is never seen without it by anyone just like Pyro but she actually was inspired design-wise by the visuals in the song Q by Powapowa-p which is part of the reason his name is Q as well) and feeling that it was the coolest thing ever

Anyways now that I'm older I realize that I was always envious of that kind of thing because of my latent desire to be seen as a man while also being seen as a woman. I don't really know where I was going with this besides just an exploration or explanation of something that has always intrigued me, but I feel that now, as someone who's played the game and tries her best to keep up with the lore, I've kinda come full circle by getting involved in tf2 for real this time and it's kinda emotional for me especially considering my own gender journey earlier this summer that was basically also spurred on by tf2

It's convoluted but if it weren't for tf2 I would have never discovered my love for the song Do You Believe in Magic and the band Lovin' Spoonful. I never would have seen their lead singer John Sebastian and as a result might not have felt so dysphoric about not being the kind of man he seemed to be, which made me realize I was bigender. I mean jesus christ I saw the guy in concert a few days ago and there was a reason I cried so hard at his mere presence that wasn't just "I'm a huge fan"

It's odd and weird but this isn't the first time some strange form of media has made me realize some deep truth about myself (thanks problem sleuth for making me bi lol) but I dunno tf2 is just really special to me now for these reasons and I'm so glad I was able to find it again and enjoy it in full :)
