A REDEMPTION ARC is an ARC: Tommy Kinard & Tyler Durden.

I keep seeing this argument in defense of Tommy Kinard, and it’s bafflingly wrong,

Tommy's redemption arc happens on screen. Even when they thought he was only going to be in one episode, we see him going from being antagonistic to Hen to shaking her hand and complimenting her at the end of the episode.

It's minor, because Tommy was just a side character then. But it is very much shown on screen and intended as a redemption.

It’s wrong. A “Redemption Arc” is an ARC. It has stages. And a big part of it involves the character struggling with their own flaws and coming to recognize they hurt people, wanting to change, and then doing better, including owning the harm they did to others. On TV/Film, it cannot be done IMPLICITLY, off-screen. And the signs that others have accepted the change can’t be the result of coercion.

In the case of workplace bullying/harassment, when there are penalties to the victims speaking out and seeking justice/restitution, it’s not enough to say, “Look, the victim shook his hand at work” to demonstrate that perpetrator has done anything to redeem himself. And when coworkers spend time together outside of the office, it’s very tricky, because they remain colleagues within organizations with hierarchies.

To be more specific, the oft cited “Bobby Begins Again” (2.16)

Look at how Hen is sitting at the table with Chim and Tommy. She’s smiling, yeah, but her body language— legs outside and not under the table, body turned—is poised to leave. She’s also on the far end of the table, so the camera has to move between her and Tommy.

When Bobby arrives and pulls up a chair, Tommy says, “Didn’t expect to see you here, Cap.” And Bobby responds, “Wilson-ah-Hen invited me.”

Chim smiles and says, “Oh did she now.”

Then the waitress arrives and Hen and Chim have a wordless back and forth exchange that Tommy is NOT a part of.

Then they discuss scars. And after showing theirs to each other, Tommy says, “I don’t want to die without any scars.” When Hen looks baffled, Tommy says, “Tyler Durden” and Chim adds, “C’mon, Fight Club?!”

Heads up? Tyler Durden is NOT a good guy. He’s not a hero. He’s the embodiment of Toxic Masculinity. Yet Tommy—like a lot of men— doesn’t know that.

Notice in the book that the body before scars is a “cherry”? It’s virginal. It’s a waste till it’s been used, violently. Not by making love but by collision. Notice that someone without scars is “like a woman”? And that hazing (improperly called Buddhist) is a method of testing whether you deserve entry to the club?

Notice that in the film, the scar quote is set within a fight scene, which Tyler sees as necessary to being a man?

This is a man who still has no idea why he was wrong. You think Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear picked that movie accidentally?

i did actually attend a catholic school as a kid because it was the only school within walking distance and my parents worked all week so they couldn't drop me off elsewhere and while i was there one of the other kids stabbed me through the hand with a pencil during a fight so i guess i'm like. 1/5th stigmatic.

healing scars

so bit of an angsty headcanon with these:

he can't touch them--and by that I mean he shouldn't

because then he gets instantly reminded of the pain of being ripped open "like a can of tuna".

I do also think he still has that memory suppressed because the pain was so horrible, and touching where Puppet's magic had healed him would more or less unlock that memory. QwQ

Remember how at the end of The Dragon Reborn, Ishamael wrapped Moiraine in black lightning and she screamed and Ishy hurled her across the room into a column where she lay unconscious for the whole duration of the book's final confrontation and then that was just never mentioned again and she was completely fine ?? Not on my watch 🤨

i honestly don't think grian betrayed scar in the finale at all, even by final killing lizzie and jimmy

grian was abundantly clear from the start who his alliance was with: scar, and scar alone. he outright told scar on multiple occasions not only that his friendship didn't extend to scar's allies, but even that he still intended on killing jimmy as revenge. scar knew full well where grian stood with his teammates; if he didn't know, it was because he was being intentionally ignorant about it.

grian kept his promises. the closest he gets to a betrayal is when he first sets up the trap and says "we could get a triple kill," but even then, he doesn't. he goes to great lengths not to kill scar; after scar has lost his final life, he laments as to how the bloodlust made it so so tempting to just kill scar, but he couldn't because their alliance was "too strong." grian avoids using the bambunker trap until after scar is dead, and says "my only issue with this trap was that i was going to kill scar."

grian didn't betray scar. he went out of his way not to. he lived up to every single promise he made, and he didn't even force scar to feel it. because he knows how badly it hurts to watch everyone you love die in front of you. so he made his intentions clear, and in the end, he even managed to spare scar the survivor's guilt that clings to his hands like blood and gunpowder. a small mercy that was, perhaps

Jason content is the one thing I can do and will continue to do which speaking of jason am I the only one conflicted about jason with scars like on the one hand it's a cool design but if the insinuation is that he got them before he got thrown in the pit then I don't care what excuses you come up with the pit should have healed them I do not care
