Better the devil you know than the angel you don't
#hellsing#integra hellsing#walter c dornez#alucard hellsing#alucard#walter is ANGEL of death#alucard is Zamiel a devil and personification of death#theyre both death in different ways#that makes hellsing something close to God since they kept both angel and devil#they act like the devil and angel on integra's shoulder#walter's hand covering his mouth so we cant tell if he have fangs or not#alucard would always shows integra his fangs tho#the idiom also fits them#forgot to mention but did anyone see the hair falling across integra's left pupil#i love sliding hint towards her losing an eye into art where she have both eyes#came back to say i intentionally depicted both walter and alucard boyishly looking#i have a feeling about the characters that integra is kind of more emotionally matured than the twos#despite her being the youngest in chronological age

Thinking of like, the Jedi and other natborns being just as confused by the clone trooper idioms as the clones probably are by their idioms.
Like a Jedi will say a mission is a piece of cake (a padawan probably, most of the knights know not to challenge the Force like that) and their troopers are just. So confused?? What is cake? Why is a mission a sweet? Or they'll say they're feeling under the weather and the medic will be like "that's a condition??"
But troopers will insult each other like "your tube was boiled" or make comments like "wtf did they put in his tube?" "Salt that's why he's blond and a bastard" and laugh and anyone nearby is Very Confused.
I do however think that becasue Kamino's weather is Like That, they know at least 30 different idioms for "it's a fucking downpour" from the trainers.
#the salt comment is a reference to the soft wars series#idioms are really hard to translate because if you translate literally your reader will probably be some degree of confused#but if you use a comparable idiom or say what they mean your leaving out the language and what they're actually saying#and you have to know what they mean in the first place#linguistics#clone wars#clone troopers#jedi#idioms

Italian idiomatic expressions
Just heard this from the news (sport) Loved the use of similar words in this sentence so I thought about making a short post about it
"Vedremo se il nostro velocista di punta riuscirà a spuntarla"
-> di punta = top, best, primary (out of a team)
-> riuscire a spuntarla = "being able to make it/to succeed *despite/against difficulties or against odds*" idiomatic expression (spuntare = lit. to check, to trim) Similar to "riuscire a farcela" (more literal translation of "being able to make it"). "Spuntarla" suggests more of a tight battle against others as in a sport competition (implied info since the video was about this sprinter going to compete against others). Maybe "end up being successful" could be a more literal translation?
Translation: "We'll see if our best sprinter will be able to make it"

misogyny in linguistics
everything containing “ 女 “ (female) in chinese character etymology means something negative, cunning, devious, dark, or to indicate a servant. studying and knowing all those characters sickens me to the core. confuscianism furthered this in east asia weakening women’s rights - before confuscianism, korean dynasties had female kings and some property rights.
though we often use different chinese characters in each cases, china - korea - japan
screenshots source
the origin of the “female” character is a woman kneeling
in other explanations in confuscian texts, it says it is an image of a person kneeling with their neck in a pillory
on the contrary, the letters for “man” 男 is a person with the power 力 to feed 10 十 (shi) 口 (gou) mouths= family
Wife as housemaid
a woman outside a home(under her husband) is not safe
women with other women are always plotting
a man is allowed to have multiple wives, especially if she does not bear children: but he does not generally need justification. a women should never be jealous, jealousy (contains chinese character for female) is one of the 7 sins that husbands could banish, or beat their wives for
women + hands = servant
add fire onto the mix of the same characters of “servant”, you got “anger”
a lot of negative emotions in chinese characters are associated with symbols of women
“Power” : women subjugated under a weapon
fraught mentions of female inferiority
남존여비 is a word often brought up in korean culture, as in males are precious and respectable “ 尊 ” and females are inferior by birth “ 卑 “ . Men are high, women are low. Gentlemen comes first
https://bild-lida.ca/educationalsociolinguistics/uncategorized/womens-oppression-and-chinese-characters/
嫌 for extreme “hate” = women
adultery = dark cunning thing that women do
not all chinese characters with “women” have bad meanings! Some have positive meanings soch as detailing women’s looks or her docility
there are few if not zero chinese characters with the male “ 男 “ used inside a character contrary to the female “ 女 “ as a descriptor.
#i wanted to put chinese idioms here but guess that some idioms are same in every country#theres the exact same word for word ancient saying in chinese#korean italian and russian#you should beat women once in a while to subdue them#if women get power the world crumbles#etc#the tidbit about hens crowing bringing the house down#(cuz roosters aka men should rule not women=hens/cats#are the same in scottish proverbs?#Asian languages on the other hand? Uh good luck understanding a single word...#misogyny#mine

One of the Burmese sayings I keep thinking about nowadays is this: ဆင်လည်း ဆင့်အထွာနဲ့၊ ဆိတ်လည်း ဆိတ်အထွာနဲ့ (my translation of this: the elephant measures by the elephant measurements and the goat measures by the goat's measurements). This phrase is used in many contexts but the core meaning of the saying is "it is different for everyone."
Of course, an elephant might look at a tree and think it small while a goat may look at the same tree and think it big. An elephant might eat a colossal amount of food compared to the goat, but for the elephant it is a normal amount of food.
During these worrying and turbulent times, it is imperative that we realize all of us are going through life but we are not going through the same life. We have to have empathy and sympathy for fellow humans. You have to be kind to yourself as well. If you're a very productive person because you have a lot of energy, you can't blame someone who isn't energetic as you are. Their achievements might look small to you, but for them it's big. For you, an insult might be easy to shake off, but for others it might be a life-long traumatic memory.
This must apply to any sort of comparison and criticism you make in the world. Are you sure that person is the same as you are? Maybe you are an elephant to their goat? Are you a goat compared to that elephant? And does it matter if you can't measure up to someone else's expectations?
An elephant will never turn into a goat. You just have to make peace with the fact that everyone is living their own version of life. Understand this, apply this to as many things as you can and take life in stride (in your own pace of course)
#burmese#burmese language#myanmar#myanmar language#myanmarese#< I don't like that word (it doesn't roll off the tongue well) but people use it a lot so#ဗမာစကား#ဗမာစာ#မြန်မာစကား#မြန်မာစာ#idioms#sayings#studyblr#langblr#helenstudies

Top ten Danish sayings according to me
My ten favourite Danish sayings/turns of phrase (in no particular order), just because I love language. I say all of these regularly. Enjoy!
goddag mand, økseskaft – hello man, axe handle
This one is used when someone answers a question you asked in a nonsensical way or just in general when someone has said something foolish or nonsensical. you can read about the origin in Danish here.
det kan ske, det kniver med gaflerne – it may spoon it knives with the forks / it happens that the forks are in short supply
Not used in any specific situation other than when someone says det kan ske 'it happens', because ske 'spoon' and ske 'happen' just so happen to be homonyms. Additionally kniv 'knife' and knibe 'be in short supply' are almost homophonous, especially if kniv was a verb.
fra folk og fulde børn skal man høre sandheden – from people and drunk children you will hear the truth
This is not actually the saying, it's supposed to be børn og fulde folk, but it's more fun like this. Originally, this refers to the fact that neither children, nor the drunk tend to think too hard before speaking, thus they tend to tell the truth.
det haster ikke mere end det jager – it's no more urgent than urgency
Excuse my creative liberties here, as both haste and jage mean 'be urgent'. It is more or less synonymous with "take it easy, no rush" – a sort of Danish hakuna matata.
To me, as someone from Western Jutland, jager should always be pronounced jawer ['ja.wʌ] in this saying.
stå med håret i postkassen – to have gotten one's hair stuck inside the mailbox
A metaphor for when you are in some sort of trouble or problematic situation where you feel like you have no power to change your unlucky situation. Often used when you are disappointed as a result of being cheated somehow.
det kan noget – it does something
My best approximation of an English version is "it's got a certain je ne sais quois", because that's literally what it means. It does something for you, specifically, but you're not entirely sure what exactly it is that it does – but it works!
man kan æggehvide, hvad man æggeskal – one egg whites what one eggshells | one cannot know what one should not do
Another pun, I am sorry for being your literal dad, I guess. Basically æggehvide 'egg white' sounds like ikke vide 'not know' and æggeskal 'eggshell' sounds like ikke skal 'should not'
ikke nå nogen/noget til sokkeholderne – not being able to reach someone/something's garters
When someone/-thing is not nearly as good as someone/-thing else. You know, it barely reaches above their knee!
hvor der handles, der spildes – where stuff gets done, stuff gets lost
Exactly what it says on the tin. Its English cousin is "you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs".
fanden og hans pumpestok – the Devil and his pump stick
Yes, this is as vulgar as it sounds. This one is used last in lists of things that are excessive, e.g, vi skulle støvsuge, slå græs, fjerne spindelvæv, dampe gulvtæppet og Fanden og hans pumpestok 'we had to vacuum, mow the lawn, remove cobwebs, steam the carpet and God knows what else'.
Honourable mention for this one that I learnt while looking stuff up in the dictionary:
[ID: A screenshot from Danish online dictionary ordnet.dk of the entry for the saying 'anbringe bagdelen i klaskehøjde'. It explains the saying and additionally recommends the entries for smæk and øretævernes holdeplads. End ID]
Translation:
to place one's backside (ass, bum) in smacking height.
TRANSFERRED MEANING cause oneself to end up in a situation where one might very easily be exposed to criticism and negative reactions from one's surroundings – e.g., by speaking openly about a certain case USE informal
SEE ALSO spanking | the whoopings' parking space
#literally googled 'euphemisms for getting beat up' to find a translation of øretæver that i liked#the literal translation is ear beatings#but its about ~the vibes~ as is the trend for translations#anyway heres a post!!!#danish#danish language#langblr#Danish langblr#language#idioms#sayings#vocabulary#original

I really didn’t want to stir the hornets nest again but I’m translating the first chapter of mdzs for release and I’m at that 青梅竹马 portion between wwx and jc. the more I’m researching and reading about the lore behind the idiom I’m like: MXTX WHY THIS IS SO SUS

So.... that new Billie Eilish album's got a song 'birds of a feather' which I propose is a shuake song. For your consideration:
#im thinking goro pov for this one#“i'd never think i wasnt better alone” is a very roundabout way of saying “im better alone” because of the double negative#which i like to think was his reasoning for not revealing that he's alive in the true ending#that he wants to solve his issues first on his own#which is still heartbreaking tbh#also 'birds of a feather' is a close enough idiom to 'two sides of the same coin'. shuake can collect all the idioms about pairs ok#shuake#my post#persona 5#persona 5 royal
