This is not a CamChase post, but, I actually do want to talk about something I feel is deeply underappreciated by fandom, which is: Cameron and Chase are actually friends.
Long before they ever sleep together, all the way back in early S1. The two of them are almost always shown to get along! Cameron sticks up for Chase the entire Vogler arc, refusing (incorrectly) to believe he would rat, or that he should be fired. Chase, noted apathetic, actually tends to go out of his way to compliment or stick up for Cameron in early episodes: he passes along her good ideas to House (Maternity), defends her from House's criticism (Detox), and compliments her good ideas in Pilot and DNR, something he notable never does once for Foreman.
They get along! They have a joking conversation about lab results and House and Foreman's fight in Socratic Method. In Paternity Chase makes a sort of borderline inappropriate joke that the patient should take his mind off his pain by admiring Cameron's boobs; Cameron laughs instead of getting offended. In Sports Medicine, he teases her about her upcoming date with House. In Hunting, before the meth hookup, Chase is openly worried about her and asks Cameron to drinks; he even offers to do extra work so she can take it easy! Chase! The laziest man alive!
But to me, the most telling example is in in Mob Rules. We're at the start of the Hameron arc, and last episode Cameron asked House if he liked her, which he didn't answer either way. And what does Cameron do? She talks to Chase about it.
CAMERON: Did House seem weird to you? CHASE: Are you expecting him to be weird? CAMERON: We spoke about how we felt. CHASE: You told him you liked him? CAMERON: No, of course not. CHASE: What are you talking about, then? CAMERON: I asked him if he liked me. CHASE: Why would you do that? CAMERON: Because⌠I like him.
They're friends! Chase reacts with zero surprise that Cameron likes House; she goes to him for advice in a moment she's feeling vulnerable. He already knows she likes House, Cameron wants his opinion. This is a conversation between friends.
In fact, this happens a few times. Notably, Cameron tries very hard to get Chase to open up to her in Cursed:
CAMERON: You know, parents are never as bad as kids think they are. CHASE: You like my dad so much, ask him out. CAMERON: [joking] Iâd make an excellent step-mom, Iâm very lenient. [pause] Heâs your father, you never see him, and heâs here. Unless heâs done some unspeakable thing, you should lighten up. CHASE: Right, thanks for the tip.
And, yeah, she clearly doesn't get it, but she's trying! She's joking around, she cares. Cameron tries to get Chase's advice in Sleeping Dogs Lie, she commiserates with him in Deception, she unilaterally defends Chase in The Mistake. They joke around sometimes, she confides in Chase when the TB guy in TB or Not TB asks her out: Cameron goes to Chase for relationship advice! More than once!
These are conversations that do not happen with other characters: Cameron and Foreman indicate they respect one another medically, but never have personal conversations; Chase doesn't open up to anyone, period. But whenever Cameron is looking for advice or to share romantic gossip⌠she goes to Chase. And Chase, for his part, likes to tease her (and she him: sex can kill you was 1000% Cameron trolling him), but honestly tends to be⌠if not automatically sympathetic, he listens, he jokes about TB Guy, he knows about her crush on House and treats it like old news. They're! Friends! I would actually argue this is probably the main reason Cameron goes to him when she decides she wants casual sex: Chase is someone she, in fact, likes. Even if that liking is not romantic. (Even the btw we should have sex, I will never love you is uh. Unless you are totally deranged that is not how you approach a fwb situation. Unless you. You know. Know Chase isn't gonna be offended because he already knows you're friends and aren't trying to drag him.)
And this actually does continue once they do date, btw. They're constantly hanging out. Chase spends entire episodes of S5 just hanging out in the ER. He still likes to tease her (Whatever it Takes), she inexplicably/hilariously still ropes him into her House drama (Ugly), but I can count on one hand the number of times they bicker or are unkind and mean it. They are friends! They always were friends. And that was the case long before they ever hooked up. In an AU where they never dated, they would still be friends. Their (romantic) relationship was badly written, no one likes it, I get it. But honestly I really do love how well they got along in S1-2, and I wish people appreciated that friendship more.
#in this fandom people will make ships out of anything#say chase and 13 are best friends based on one and a half episodes#(i'm people btw.))#but cameron and chase legit were work friends for years before hooking up and people are like nooooo doesn't exist#no she hated him. no she only pity dated him because he browbeat her. no she never liked him.#maybe slash probably dating was a mistake but they were still FRIENDS FIRST#also i'm not trying to shade foreman or those friendships but for real#these are not conversations either of them ever have with him#which makes it even more striking how often cameron DOES turn to chase to commiserate or ask relationship advice#it really is not something she does with anyone else#ugh i get so mad#the camchase friendship is the true victim of the camchase ship#malpractice posting#allison cameron#robert chase

TPN s02e08
Maaan, what an rollercoaster! We literally go from amazing to fine to incredible. Which kinda makes me angry because this is how this season SHOULD look like. Okay, fine, letâs skip Goldy Pond, but letâs make it equally amazing as this. Just in an anime original way. And this episode proves they COULD do it. Itâs a pity that it took them over a half of the season to reach this point. But letâs start from the beginning.
1. So, Peter Ratri is voiced by Yoshimasa Hosoya. I was joking with my friend that it might be the reason why the quality of the animation isnât always the best - because he took a half of the budget. Anyway, I think he is doing a good job with voicing this character right now, but I will wait with the final judgement for the Peterâs meltdown scene.Â
2. Just a fun fact I read in the manga: apparently when Isabella tells Norman that he is going to a new home, Shirai used the kanji that can also mean âcageâ.Â
3. Another thing I loved: they showed how Norman found about Vincent. Itâs shown in the extra pages for one of the volumes (I donât remember in which one right now).
4. Again, I like that the first 7-8 minutes were fully focused on Lambda. I think that this is something that anime-only people really needed (without the context, itâs difficult understand how MUCH those guys hate the demons and why). And for manga readers it was cool to see it in colour. But on the other hand, Iâm kinda disappointed that they just showed us the images of the experiments. I think adding movement and sound would make those scenes absolutely terrifying. But hey, at least they showed it!
5. So, we found out a little bit about the escape, buuuut it was nearly as much as I was hoping for. Based on the panels in the manga, we could have already guessed that they used some kind of explosives. I guess we still need to wait for another special chapter/light novel.
6. Annnd after the amazing lambda part we jump to the search... Now, do you know why this whole thing was more engaging in the manga?
Because we got her. I donât think it will be controversial if I say that the search for Mujika was really boring. Just a bunch of pictures and building up suspense by showing us that CGI demon. Speaking of that demon!
7. You know what pains a lot in this episode? SO MANY reused animations. I mean, the test solving animation, the demon, the chase, later the demons degenerating and demons eating other demons... look, I know they want to save money, but there are some limits!
8. Apparently Ray, a guy who has been living in the wilderness for months, needs a watch to tell that sun is setting. Just a minor nitpick that I had to point out.Â
9. Okay, I think we can official crown Norman as our new edge lord. I mean that monologue on the top of the rock... I know that words are from the manga, but when itâs shown like that, it looks more silly than serious. Also, the quote âI will gladly become a God or a devilâ, doesnât make THAT much sense here, because we didnât get this scene:

To me it felt like unnecessary fan service towards manga readers, but Iâm happy for you if you liked this scene. Norman is allowed to become our tiny edge lord.
10. You know what made me angry? Don and Ray shooting the demon, but Emma and Gilda not. Yes, Emma does it a second later, but it became a trend to give her badass scenes to boys. The next scene, however, made me furious.
11. Ray shoots the demon and then he and Emma share a sigh of relief. But then it turns out that the wild demon is still alive and itâs going to eat Emma. Wait a minute... I have seen it somewhere... OH, RIGHT!
Of course, there are situations where Emma is the one who is being saved. The problem is that in the anime she is always being saved by someone - never the other way around. Iâm happy that Ray is given stuff to do, but why is it that he is given Emmaâs stuff. Come on!
12. Also, how did they know that it was Norman who caused the explosion? How far did they actually went? Are you going to tell me that they were in practically the same location for months and nobody found them? Again, those are nitpicks, but they bother me a lot!
13. Also, apparently the drug is now spread through the air, and Normanâs whole gang is made out of edge lords who need to stand dramatically on the chimneys. I can imagine that during planning they had a conversation similar to: - Boss, do you know what ever genocide needs? - What? - Dramatic JoJo posing over the burning villages. - Good, good... write that down!
14. Okay, enough ranting, letâs move to the incredible stuff. First of all, the music in those last scenes really reminded me of the Witcher Soundtrack and I LOVE the Witcher soundtrack. So epic!Â
15. I actually stopped taking notes at this point, because I was so immersed in everything that was happening on the screen. The music, the tone, the colours, the expressions - THIS! This is what this anime should be from the very beginning. Making us care about the demons, and showing that they are also the victims of this system. The actual dread and thriller, the moral issues, engaging plot lines.
16. The scene with the old demon and Norman? Good anime original content? How is it possible? When the old demon asks Norman whether he is a human and he doesnât answer - because at this point he himself isnât sure. Yes, give me more of that!
17. Norman being terrified after seeing blood on his hands? Thatâs a good change from the manga Norman, because it makes narrative sense. Really, CloverWorks, how can you make such an amazing scene after those 6 mediocre and one good episode?Â
Anyway, itâs difficult for me to add anything right now because I donât feel like I have enough words to describe how much I loved that last scene. Does it mean I have forgiven this season its previous sins? No, but Iâm a happier person right now, and Iâm REALLY looking forward into the next episode.Â

Anime iâve Watched
That begin with a T (Part 2)!
Yep this is how iâm going to bring over all the anime and manga iâve watched and posted about on the old blog. Itâs not so detailed but it will have to do. Anything new I watch or read from this point on will have their own posts.
Tokyo Ghoul:
Genres: Action, Mystery, Horror, Psychological, Supernatural, Drama, Seinen
Synopsis:Â Tokyo has become a cruel and merciless cityâa place where vicious creatures called âghoulsâ exist alongside humans. The citizens of this once great metropolis live in constant fear of these bloodthirsty savages and their thirst for human flesh. However, the greatest threat these ghouls pose is their dangerous ability to masquerade as humans and blend in with society. Based on the best-selling supernatural horror manga by Sui Ishida, Tokyo Ghoul follows Ken Kaneki, a shy, bookish college student, who is instantly drawn to Rize Kamishiro, an avid reader like himself. However, Rize is not exactly who she seems, and this unfortunate meeting pushes Kaneki into the dark depths of the ghouls' inhuman world. In a twist of fate, Kaneki is saved by the enigmatic waitress Touka Kirishima, and thus begins his new, secret life as a half-ghoul/half-human who must find a way to integrate into both societies. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
My Rating: 6.5/10
Finished airing in 2014 with a total of 12 episodes.Â
My Thoughts: Loved the Manga... did not love the anime. Could not explain to you why now that it has been so long since iâve watched this... Amazing opening theme though!!
Tokyo Ghoul âA :
Genres: Action, Mystery, Horror, Psychological, Supernatural, Seinen, Drama
Synopsis:Â Ken Kaneki has finally come to accept the monstrous, flesh-craving part of himself that he has feared and despised for so long. After escaping captivity and torture, Kaneki joins Aogiri Treeâthe very militant ghoul organization that had abducted him, leading his friends to question his true motive and loyalty. As tension between the government and the ghouls continues to rise, the Commission of Counter Ghoul, the government's specialized anti-ghoul agency, has intensified their efforts to completely purge Tokyo of ghouls. This threatens the transient peace of Kaneki's friends and former comradesâthe ghouls at the Anteiku coffee shop. Aware of the dangerous situation, Kaneki faces several battles that puts his precious fleeting humanity on the line. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
My Rating: 3/10
Finished airing in 2015 with a total of 12 episodes.Â
My Thoughts: I liked this one even less than the first. You be the judge of what interests you though. Donât let me stop you from watching something! Highly suggest reading the manga!!
Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro):
Genres: Film, Adventure, Comedy, Supernatural
Synopsis:Â In 1950s Japan, Tatsuo Kusakabe relocates himself and his two daughters, Satsuki and Mei, to the countryside to be closer to their mother, who is hospitalized due to long-term illness. As the girls grow acquainted with rural life, Mei encounters a small, bunny-like creature in the yard one day. Chasing it into the forest, she finds "Totoro"âa giant, mystical forest spirit whom she soon befriends. Before long, Satsuki too meets Totoro, and the two girls suddenly find their lives filled with magical adventures in nature and fantastical creatures of the woods. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
My Rating: 8/10
A film released in 1988.
My Thoughts: My least favourite Ghibli film, though many peoples favorite. As with all films iâd say itâs worth at least a single watch!Â
Tsurezure Children:
Genres: Comedy, Romance, School, Shounen, TV Short
Synopsis:Â Young loveâit takes many unique and fascinating forms that flourish as children begin to mature into adults. From being unable to confess to not knowing what real love actually feels like, various obstacles can arise when learning about romantic attraction for the first time. But underneath all that, young love is something truly beautiful to behold, leading to brand new experiences for those young and in love. Tsurezure Children depicts various scenarios of young love coming to fruition, along with the struggles and joys that it entails. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
My Rating: 9/10
Finished airing in 2017 with a total of 12, 12 minute long episodes.Â
My Thoughts: An enjoyable little series with a just as enjoyable manga! Check them both out if youâre interested!!
Tsurune: Kazemai Koukou Kyuudoubu:
Genres: Sports, Drama, School
Synopsis:Â "Tsurune"âIt's the sound made by the bowstring when an arrow is released, and the sound that inspired Minato Narumiya to learn Kyuudo, a modern Japanese martial art focusing on archery. However, an incident during his last middle school tournament caused him to quit the sport. But soon, many factors conspire to make Minato take up the bow once again: the start of a new Kyuudo club in his high school, a chance encounter with a mysterious archer, and the support of his childhood friends, Seiya Takehaya and Ryouhei Yamanouchi. Together with his childhood friends and his new teammates, Kaito Onogi and Nanao Kisaragi, Minato rekindles his love for Kyuudo and works with his team toward their aim of winning the prefectural tournament. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
My Rating: 9/10
Finished airing in 2019 with a total of 13 episodes.Â
My Thoughts: Pretty dudes, sports and friendship! Not as life changing as something like Haikyuu!! but enjoyable all the same. I have the hots for Masaki... pretty sure everyone does.Â

149 Palm Springs (20)
150 Happiest Season (20)
151 *Metropolitan (90) itâs definitely a Christmas movie
152 Black Christmas (74)
THEATRE:HOME - 2:150 (thanks pandemic)
I usually separate out docs and fiction, but I watched almost no documentaries this year (with the exception of Dick Johnston). Reality is real enough.Â
TV Series
01 - BoJack Horseman (final season) - Pretty damned poignant finish to the show, replete with actual consequences for our reformed bad boy protagonist (which is more than you can say for most antiheroes of Peak TV).
02 - *Hello Ladies - I enjoy the pure awkwardness of seeing Stephen Merchant try to perform being a Regular Person, but ultimately this show tips him too far towards a nasty, Ricky Gervais-lite sort of persona. Perhaps he was always best as a cameo appearance, or lip synching with wild eyes while Chrissy Teigen giggles?
03 - Olive Kittredge - a rough watch by times. I read the book as well, later in the year. Frances Mcdormand was the best, possibly the only, casting option for the flinty lead. One episode tips into thriller territory, which is a shock.Â
04 - *The Wire S3, S4, S5 - lockdown culture! It was interesting to rewatch this, then a few months later go through an enormous, culture-level reappraisal of cop-centred narratives.Â
05 - Forever - a Maya Rudolph/Fred Armisen joint that coasts on the charm of its leads. The premise is OK, but I wasnât left wanting any more at the end.Â
06 - *Catastrophe - a rewatch when my partner decided he wanted to see it, too!
07 - Red Oak - resolutely âOKâ steaming dramedy, relied heavily on some pretty obvious cues to get across its 1980s setting.Â
08 - Little Fires Everywhere - gulped this one down while in 14-day isolation, delicious! Every 90s suburban mom had that SUV, but not all of them had the requisite **secrets**
09 - The Great - fun historical comedy/drama! Costumes: lush. Actors: amusing. Race-blind casting: refreshing!
10 - The Crown S4 - this is the season everyone lost their everloving shit for, since itâs finally recent enough history that a fair chunk of the viewing audience is liable to recall it happening.Â
11 - Ted Lasso - we resisted this one for a while (thought I did enjoy the ad campaign for NBC sports (!!) that it was based on). My view is that its best point was the comfort that the men on the show have (or develop, throughout the season) with the acknowledgement and sharing of their own feelings. Masculinity redux.Â
12 - Moonbase 8 - Goodnatured in a way that makes you certain they will be crushed.Â
13 - The Good Lord Bird - Ethan Hawke is really aging into the character actor we always hoped he would be!Â
14 - Hollywood - frothy wish-fulfillment alternate history. I think the show would have been improved immeasurably by skipping the final episode.

THE DIZI TAG GAME
Rules: Answer the questions and then tag people you want to participate! (Also tag it #The Dizi Tag Game so we can see everyoneâs lists)
Tagged by: @missloislane and @aslibekroglu thank you SO SO SO much! I was planning on doing it anyway even if I was never tagged because this seemed so fun so thank you for not letting me jumping off of someone elseâs post
1. your first dizi & how you discovered Turkish dramas :
So, this is a long story so TL;DR: Kiralik Ask and facebook groups.Â
Now, for the long story. It might have been 10 years ago now? probably less? I donât know, since the end of highschool I have lost consciousness of time and what a year is and when it ends. Anyway, Kiralik Ask was all the rage in Italy and in the facebook groups I was in, people were talking about this and Cherry Season a lot (Iâm pretty sure this wasnât 10 years ago but Iâm dramatic) and I became obsessed with all the videos and things and everything (of KA, I didnât care for Cherry Season) BUT I did not watch it then. Years later, like maybe three years ago? maybe 2? No idea. I discovered Vatanim Sensin thanks to @rescuemeifyoucan and her posts about it and became obsessed with that as well so, like a normal person, I searched for Hileon videos on YouTube and found every single scene they were in (only Hileon scenes) and watched a lot of those videos, probably 3/4 of the first season, stayed up all night (fun fact, I went to sleep at like 8 in the morning and when I woke up a couple hours later I got called and did my stage/started working at the place Iâm at) and that was my initiation to Turkish shows but since I did not actually watch it, only precise scenes, that is not technically my first dizi. About 2 weeks of VS and only VS I decided that it was time to watch KA (because I found a playlist of YT of every episode from the beginning with Italian subtitles and others in English subtitles if the Italian ones were missing) so technically this is my first actual turkish dizi watched, since it is the first dizi that I have seen complete episodes of, from the first episode.
2. show(s) youâre currently watching:
Technically none but also technically thousands. So, technically (expect this word to be the most used in this post) I am currently watching Menajerimi Ara (havenât watched since more than two months ago probably), Alev Alev (last watched I think last month) 50m2 (again, last watched last month), Kiralik Ask (itâs been a few years actually BUT I havenât given up on it yet and I will continue it... someday), Her Yerde Sen (last watched probably last year? Maybe start of the pandemic, maybe before that), Kuzey Yildiz (last watched I think the end of last year), Halka (I have no idea when I stopped with this honestly), Kara Para Ask (last year? maybe? Before Her Yerde Sen I think), Benim Tatli Yalanim (around the time of HYS), Kimse Bilmez (again, around HYS time). I havenât seen any of these for some time but they are all shows that I plan to continue sooner or later. Itâs all shows I loved but put aside because I found a new obsession but I do get back to them sometimes.
3. your favorite genre of dizi (romcom, mafia show, contemporary drama, historical/fantasy, etc.):
Romcom. I do like some dramas but I tend to hate almost all of the characters except a selected few and I canât handle all that hate, my liver cannot survive it.
4. the show you rewatch (parts of) the most:
I think KA? or MA? or HYS? They are my favorite shows of the ones I have started. Also Ask 101 (the only Turkish show I have actually completed and only because itâs not 10 thousand episodes long and itâs easily available on Netflix so itâs easy to rewatch again)
5. favorite Turkish actor and actress (feel free to pick multiples):
I have this problem, itâs names, I rarely know the names of actors, if I know them I forget them, I sometimes mistake the characterâs name with the actorâs name, sometimes the opposite so letâs try this and see what mess comes out:Â
Aybuke Pusat, the guy who played Demir on HYS, the two friends of Selin from HYS and the receptionist. Elcin (?) and Baris (?) from KA, Burcu (?), Alina, Kubilay, and the other kids from Ask 101, Dicle and Baris and Julide from MA, Hilal and Leon from VS, Cicek di Alev Alev, Cagatay Ulusoy (I remember his name! my beloved CaCa), The female protagonist of KPA (she was also in the first episode of MA which is the reason why I started that show), Hande Ercel, Kerem Bursin, Elcin (?), Melisa, the one who played the third main friend, the red headed girl, all from SCK, Ismail (?) and the actress of Yildiz from Kuzey Yildiz, also the three girls from there. Most of the cast of Hercai, although I hate more than half of the characters.Â
I feel so bad that I donât remember their name. I swear I love them!
6. a show you quit before finishing:
A few. First and foremost Sefirin Kizi (couldnât get past episode 1). Erkenci Kus (hated the direction it was going, which was in circles), Ask Laftan Anlamaz (hated hated hated the lie that guy protagonist said. Wanted to watch after but I canât do that to myself). Sad to say but also Sen Cal Kapimi. I loved it SO MUCH and then first he does that stupid break up thing that I hate (because it similarly happened in ALS and that is the whole reason why I never finished that show so already not a good start), then it seems to be picking up and we got the amnesia thing so yeah, nope, not doing it. Afili Ask (I liked it but not enough to continue and I have to give up on a few shows). Also probably Hercai since I enjoy how it ended in season one and never felt the urge to continue.
Technically most of the answers from the 2 question apply here as well but I do intend on continuing those, these ones, however, I will not continue.Â
7. favorite song(s) youâve discovered in diziâs:
Birakman Dogru Mu 2 by Zeynep Bastik and Anil Piyanci, heard on Menajerimi Ara and the song that started my love for pop songs made in Turkey
8. the show whose plot disappointed you the most:
Sen Cal Kapimi and Ask Laftan Anlamaz are the ones that first come to mind. And Erkenci Kus. God, Erkenci Kus disappointed me SO MUCH.
9. a show that was cancelled too soon / ran too long:
Ran too long: definitely EK. And SCK (sorry not sorry, it should have ended right before the amnesia).
Cancelled too soon: I donât usually watch shows that get cancelled soon (in the sense that I usually wait a bit before watching a show because I wouldnât want for it to be cancelled while I am passionate about it) and technically I do not yet know if they were cancelled too soon, but I would say HYS and Benim Tatli Yalanim because I was loving them and I have less than 10-15 episodes left to watch
10. favorite character(s):Â Â
The children in every drama are my favorite so Gul (Hercai), the children in Alev Alev, the child in Sefirin Kizi (the only character to save themselves in that show except for Gediz), the girl from BTY, Bulut (?) from Dolunay. Also CeyCey (EK), Baris and Dicle from MA, basically the entire cast of SCK (I might hate the direction where this is going but I do love the characters), the main characters from ALA (except for the main male protagonist, he can choke), the main characters from Atesbocegi, Suna from BTY, Reyyan (Hercai), a lot of others, I just donât remember the names.
11. your favorite romantic pairing(s):
ReyMir (Hercai), LeyEm (Erkenci KuĹ), Edser (Sen Ăal KapÄąmÄą), Defom (KiralÄąk AĹk), SelDem (HYS), Suna x Nejat (BTY), DicBar (MA), Bahar x Kaan (Halka), Ibo x Ayda (?) (HYS), YilKuz (Kuzey Yildiz), probably others.Â
12. favorite side character(s):
Cey Cey (Erkenci KuĹ), Julide (MA) (I know people hate her but to the moment Iâm at, I still love her), Ayda (?) (HYS), Burcu (BTY), again, others but I donât remember the names.
13. best kiss:
I love the fire side (?)Â kiss between Selin and Demir from HYS as well as their kiss when she thinks that he stood her up when in fact he didnât even know that he was supposed to go on a date with her and so she gets pissed off (rightfully so) and he chases after her and OMG I love them! Also the first and second kiss between Nejat and Suna. These last three I have made gifs of, and they were my first gifs, unedited, kinda ugly, but I love them (not saying that I make good gifs now because I do not, they are still ugly and unedited but not my firsts anymore).
14. an underrated show more people should watch:Â
Her Yerde Sen. And Benim Tatli Yalanim. And Menajerimi Ara (although more people were getting into it). And Alev Alev.
15. a show everyone loves that you arenât interested in:
The one with Demet Ozdemir (BOK I believe is the tag). Never was interested in it but based on gifs alone, I think they had the character who is either played by an actor whose name is Ismail or the character is called Ismail make a 180 from season 1 to season 2 and I hate it when they do this kind of things in books and series (I might be wrong though) so now I have even less interest in it. Also Son Yaz. The gifs, I love them, but I donât want to actively watch the show. Iâll enjoy it from gifs and posts about it.
16. a show you want to recommend right now:Â Â
Menajerimi Ara, Kara Para Ask, Her Yerde Sen, Alev Alev, Benim Tatly Yalanim.Â
17. the next show on your list: Â
none, to be honest. I mean, I already have a LOOOONG list of shows to finish so itâs better that way.Â
tagging:Â @rescuemeifyoucan and, for people who heve not been tagged yet, take this as the sign that I am tagging you.
#the dizi tag game#tag#this is probably way longer than it should have been#also my inability to remember names is really bad!#also definitely not 10 years ago my first knowledge of dizis#since KA started airing in 2015#my ability to understan the passage of time is as bad as my ability to remember names

Top 10 Personal Favorite Hit Songs from 2006
17 to 18 years old. First to second university year, studying History. Another slightly chaotic year, to be honest.
Itâs yet another great year for hits, even if 2005 and 2007 are both even better.
Disclaimers:
Keep in mind Iâm using both the year-end top 100 lists from the US and from France while making these top 10 things. Thereâs songs in English that charted in my country way higher than they did in their home countries, or even earlier or later, so that might get surprising at times.
Of course there will be stuff in French. We suck. I know. Itâs my list. Deal with it.
My musical tastes have always been terrible and Iâm not a critic, just a listener and an idiot.
I have sound to color synesthesia which justifies nothing but might explain why I have trouble describing some songs in other terms than visual ones.
At this point it was beginning to be clear that my mother wanted me out of the appartment as quickly as possible so staying at home was becoming more and more unpleasant. I basically spent most of my day outside or at the library when I wasnât in class, then ate dinner and slept at home. I had a few friends at university but was very unpopular (by the start of the second year, my nickname was âthe hoboâ, mostly because I was always wearing the same old black coat and bad jeans, but also because I liked to fish for coins under vending machines cause I had next to no money). I also had a brief but extremely bad relationship that year, which ended with me punching the dude back after he punched me between two classes near the end of the year.
While making these lists I found a tape labelled âspring 2006âł and nothing else. I think itâs one of the last tapes I ever made.

After listening to it, it contained:
Mr Brightside (The Killers) (whoâs surprised?)
Crazy, by Seal, but sung by a woman. No idea who that is. (Edit: Alanis Morissette! thank you purplecyborgnewt)
Alice & June (Indochine)
You And Me (Lifehouse)
A couple of seconds of Precious, Depeche Mode
Oui (Zazie)
Precious (Depeche Mode) again. A radio host states itâs the n°15 favorite song on Europe 2 that week, whichever week that was.
City of Blinding Lights (U2)
Nolwenn Ohwo (Nolwenn Leroy)
Fragment of Song to Say Goodbye (Placebo), then the entire song.
The ending of Talk (Coldplay), followed by another fragment of Talk
Juste Après (Fredericks, Goldman & Jones)
Talk (Coldplay), this time in its entirety (I can still smell the frustration more than 13 years away)
Broken (Seether)
Enjoy the Silence 2004 (Depeche Mode)
Fragment of Missing (Evanescence), followed by nearly the entire song
Jeune et Con (Saez)
A bit of a radio show I found funny
An obscure remix of Sans Contrefaçon (Mylène Farmer).
So yeah, I stopped making tapes around that time. I also only bought two cd singles that year.

Just like the previous year, some of my favorite albums from that year have exactly zero singles elligible for this list. They are Alice & June by Indochine, and Meds by Placebo. The worst part? One of the best songs on Indochineâs album is a goddamn duet with Brian Molko from Placebo. Itâs called Pink Water and itâs great. Please listen to it if you donât know it yet. What can I say, Iâm a weak and simple person, I hear a duet between two singers I adore, and I die instantly.
Anyway. Meds is kind of underrated as far as Placeboâs discography goes and Iâm especially fond of Infrared, which was one of the songs of the year for me. Indochineâs Alice & June, meanwhile, is a concept double album about two girls making a suicide pact. Itâs a bit of a mess and itâs not as tight as Paradize was but itâs still really, really good for the most part. The first eponymous single should have been elligible. But it isnât. Iâm sad.
On to the honorable mentions!
So Sick (Ne-Yo) - Usually this kind of music just sounds bland to me, but that one was really pleasant.
Miracle (Cascada) - Not as good as Everytime we touch. Still a lot of fun.
Smack That (Akon) - This shouldnât be this catchy.
Pump It (Black Eyed Peas) - Same here.
Living On Video (Pakito) - I only just now realised this was a cover. What the hell.
SOS (Rihanna) - Not her best song. Still good.
LâAmour Nâest Rien (Mylène Farmer) - Really funny lyrics, meh song.
World Hold On (Bob Sinclar) - Stay tuned for more.
Hips Donât Lie (Shakira) - Song of the summer, whether you liked it or not. Fortunately, I liked it a lot.
Chasing Cars (Snow Patrol) - Very pleasant.
SexyBack (Justin Timberlake) - That beat is just incredible.
Call Me When Youâre Sober (Evanescence) - I remember Rock Mag finishing their KarmaCode (Lacuna Coil) review with âWe hope Evanescenceâs next album will be fantastic, because this is their most serious rival yet.â And nope, Evanescenceâs album wasnât nearly as good as KarmaCode. But this song still made the year-end list, while nothing from Lacuna Coil ever crossed over. Our Truth SHOULD have been a huge hit. It had a ton of crossover appeal. One of the biggest musical tragedies of the year right there. Oh well, the Evanescence single is still good though.
Say It Right (Nelly Furtado & Timbaland) - The last cut from the list, and when youâll see what replaced it, you are going to hate me.
And now, the top ten.
10 - Everytime We Touch (Cascada)
US: #31 / FR: #5

This kicked Nelly Furtado off the list.
I am not sorry, just so you know.
9 - Ridinâ (Chamillionaire)
US: #8 / FR: Not on the list

This is a song about respecting the law and driving at a reasonable speed and cops being mad because they canât do anything against you. Heâs a gangster, just... not doing anything illegal at the moment. I absolutely adore that concept. This is the best.
8 - Crazy (Gnarls Barkley)
US: #7 / FR: #29
Iâve never met someone who disliked this song, and for that reason I have nothing to say about it. Itâs just one of these tunes, like Hey Ya, which are too perfect to argue or say anything constructive about them.
7 - Temperature (Sean Paul)
US: #2 / FR: #48
Half of this top ten 10 is made of absolute bangers with untouchable beats and you know what, I really miss that time, mostly because the current charts are morose and depressed (for good reasons, but still). This is no Get Busy, but come on, who can say we need less Sean Paul in our lives? Not me thatâs for sure.
By the way, one of the very first videos I saw on (the very new at the time) youtube was a misheard lyrics version of this song. I think you all know which one it is, the original has been deleted but it was reuploaded several times since then.
6 - Rock This Party (Bob Sinclar & Cutee B)
US: Not on the list / FR: #19
You really canât go wrong with this âEverybody dance nowâ sample, and this is one seriously kickass song, and yet another banger on a list already full of them. Also, this was possibly the best music video of the entire year, featuring three kids trying to imitate music videos from just about every popular genre. Check it out if youâve never seen it, it will make your day.
5 - Marly-Gomont (Kamini)
US: Not on the list / FR: #1
Possibly the most unexpected hit song of the decade in my country. Basically, this guy made a rap song about the tiny rural village he was living in, and a funny music video shot on a 100⏠budget to show to his friends and family. And it was well written. And it was hilarious, while still being insightful. And it became a viral sensation. And it charted! And suddenly it became the biggest hit of the year.
If youâve never heard it, here it is. There was no translation available for it on lyricstranslate, so I made an account just to translate it myself. Youâre welcome. Please give it a try. Itâs great. It was a hit for a good reason, and I promise you the music video is funny even if you donât speak the language.
4 - Slipping Away/Crier la Vie (Mylène Farmer & Moby)
US: Not on the list / FR: #15

So, uh, earlier in this post I said âWhat can I say, Iâm a weak and simple person, I hear a duet between two singers I adore, and I die instantly.â
This is a duet between Mylène Farmer and Moby, based on a song from Hotel, which, if you recall, I listened to on a loop the previous year.
My poor heart didnât need this. What did I do to deserve this. What a blessing.
3 - Over My Head (Cablecar) (The Fray)
US: #13 / FR: Not on the list

This was my #1 at some point. Then I realised the version I kept listening to was a punk rock version by A Day To Remember from Punk Goes Pop, and that I had nearly forgotten what the original sounded like. So I listened to it, and itâs still very, very nice, but itâs not quite the same.
I still bought the album, though.
2 - Nolwenn Ohwo (Nolwenn Leroy)
US: Not on the list / FR: #43
I had completely (and I do mean completely) forgotten about this song until I started to check the French year-end top 100 to make this list. Erased from my mind entirely by some sort of MiB neuralyser. And I was like âhang on, wasnât this a good song? This rings a bell. I used to love it, didnât I?â (and sure enough, itâs on that 2006 tape I found). So I wrote it down for the honorable mentions, just in case.
Before making the definitive list, I put the song on, and I felt like the critic in Ratatouille having a flashback.
Holy. Shit.
I remembered ALL the lyrics. While listening to it, in under three minutes I successively put it in the 6th spot, then the 4th, and when it ended, it was #2 on the list. I downloaded it and put it back on my mp3 player and on my playlists. Iâve listened to it about 30 times in the past week. Itâs so great. How did I ever forget this song existed. I feel so alive.
I never cared about this singer, but this is written by Laurent Voulzy, whoâs music I actually love, and heâs firing on all cylinders here. Just listen to it. Please.
It could have easily topped the list if it wasnât for the most useful and helpful song in the entire year.
1 - Pas le Temps (Faf Larage)
US: Not on the list / FR: #2

I never watched a single episode of Prison Break. This was the French version of the opening song. I donât even know what happens in the series. I donât really care.
I. Adore. This song. Itâs yet another #1 that helped me a lot.
The beat is untouchable and this rap is actual poetry. Not even remotely kidding. Hereâs a part of one of the verses.
Aussi loin que la lumière semble s'ĂŠteindre (As far as the light seems to flicker) Seule une ĂŠtincelle au fond de moi peut l'atteindre (Only the spark hidden inside of me can reach it) (...) Les dĂŠs sont jetĂŠs, rien n'est jouĂŠ (the dice is tossed, the game is set) MĂŞme le sort retient son souffle piĂŠgĂŠ dans ce sablier (even fate holds its breath, trapped in this hourglass) J'ai dĂŠcidĂŠ de ne pas ĂŞtre prisonnier (I decided I wouldnât be a prisoner) J'n'ai que ma vie Ă offrir si jamais j'ĂŠchouais (I only have my life to offer if I ever fail) Pas le choix faut y'aller (No choice, letâs go)
The line âpas le choix, faut y allerâ (no choice, letâs go) keeps being repeated in the entire song and itâs so, SO motivational. As I said before, 2006 was not as bad as 2003 but it was still a difficult year - at the end of it, I was an adult with no money, very little hope for the future, no diploma yet apart from the highschool one, still trying to NOT become a ball of anger because of a couple of assholes in class, all of this with dysphoria and a mother who wanted to kick me out as soon as possible. And I wanted to win, and punch the world, and say here I come, Iâm alive, I survived, better watch out.
Si je dois exceller, tout donner, prendre c'que j'peux (If I need to be the best, give everything, take whatever I can) Si le monde m'appartient restez pas au milieu (If the world is mine, donât stay in my way) Et si le sort est contre moi c'est tant pis (And if fate is against me, too bad) On fait des plans pour s'en sortir, ĂŠcoute (Weâre making plans to survive, listen) Pas le choix faut y'aller (No choice, letâs go)
This song defined the entire year for me. This was my fight song. Everytime I wanted to give up, it was there to give me a very simple reminder.
No choice. Letâs go.
Next up: here it is, at last, the absolute best hit song of the decade

"i feel like being bitter and listing off all the things that the 90s show changed about the original stories" as a relative newcomer to moomin-related stuff, i'm curious... what *did* the 90s show change??
*rubs hands because I love being insufferable*Â Â
(Minor disclaimer that this is mostly done in good nature. I understand almost every show that is adapted from existing content is gonna change stuff to suit their story-telling needs. But I am annoyed that some who praise the 90s anime think the new series is bad simply for doing things differently when that show, and nearly every one prior to it, has also put their own spin on things.)
There are 24 episodes of Tanoshii Moomin Ikka (plus a movie) based on the books by Tove Jansson, and I think 11 based on the comic strips she wrote. It would take a long time to cover every single detail in every single episode, so I am mainly going to discuss those that have changes I find more significant, disappointing, personally distressing, or just plain baffling.
(A second disclaimer: I have not read any entire comic stories past the point where Tove stopped working on them. There are some episodes based on strips created exclusively by her brother Lars, The Vampire and Artists in Moominvalley being two examples. I will be skipping those, as well as Bouken Nikki episodes, as I have yet to thoroughly watch each one on account of so few being based on Toveâs work and the headaches they induce lmao. Nitpicks from fans who have read Larsâ strips in full are welcome.)
Now without further ado, let the fussing begin~
01 Spring in Moominvalley: This follows the basic storyline from the first two chapters of Finn Family, but with some notable changes. Snufkin at this point woke up from hibernation along with the rest of the family, Little My had yet to be introduced, and Snork - a child like the rest of the main cast - lived with his sister and the rest of the kids in the Moominhouse. The entire subplot of him being an inventor is merely an invention of the anime.
Moomintroll, in the book, spends a lot more time in transformed body. As he believes his friends are playing a new game when they fail to recognize him, he makes up a story about being âThe King of Californiaâ. He repeatedly pretends to insult Moomin (himself), and in a touching display of devotion his own friends beat him up to defend his honour.
02 The Magic Hat: Continuing on with a scene based on the later half of chapter 2, we see Moomin rescue Snorkmaiden from the Ant Lion, and along with Snufkin, decide to trap him in the magical hat. In the original story however, Moomin and Snork trap the him. This was rather unprovoked, though Moomin cites a moment from a previous book (read all about it in The Moomins and the Great Flood!) where the Ant Lion allegedly kicked sand in Mammaâs eyes. The gang then takes the hat back inside for more âexperimentsâ, and after making a mess, the adults decide it best to dispose of the hat in the river.
Much like in the story, the hat is soon recovered by Moomin and Snufkin, though a chapter where they hide it in a cave and and end up frightening the Muskrat (who uses it as a shelf for his dentures) is absent. It then continues to the scene where Moominhouse is briefly overgrown with plants. Aside from this happening sooner than it did in the book, and the premature appearance of the Hobgoblin, and the missing Mameluke hunt, and the part where all the children play in the jungle, I think itâs pretty true to that chapter!
03 Discovery of a Wrecked Ship:Â Â First off, I wanna say Iâm mostly including this episode on my list just to make it clear that Snufkinâs random sexist comments towards Snorkmaiden and Little My are missing from the book. There is a chapter where him and Moomin go ambling up some rocks, but âthe girlsâ are thankfully absent from this scene.
So then they discover an abandoned boat and the rest of the episode is padded with scenes where they repair it. A charming spectacle, Iâm sure, but also absent from the book as the boat they find is already in pristine condition. Shame that Snufkin never got to share his idea for the shipâs name, (it was Lurking Wolf aha ha ha) but that might be for the best.
07 The Suitcase: As seen in episode 06, Thingumy and Bob arrived in Moominvalley. They bring with them stolen goods and and the mother of Grimace, who seeks to recover said goods. Snufkin, once again letting everyone down, decides that a gentle female should speak to them about the contents of their suitcase and soon Snorkmaiden is assigned to the task. Instead the book features a trial sequence, which really helps hammer in the metaphor. Everyone takes part and Sniff acts as prosecutor of behalf of the Groke, who appears and is willing to trade the treasure in exchange for the magical top hat (NOT a pretty scallop).
08 The Hobgoblinâs Magic:Â Moomin hears that his wondrous wooden woman has washed up on the shores of Moominvalley. But when he rushes to the beach, he finds nothing but sand and disappointment waiting for him. This sends him spiraling into a brief yet no less deep depression which is cured only when Thingumy and Bob share their contents of their secret suitcase. The novel was much more reasonable however. He was saddened by the loss of Snufkin who had skipped the valley for the first time, promising (as we all know) to return on the first day of Spring.
And then there is a fabulous summer party thrown by the family after the recovery of Moominmammaâs handbag. This part is true to the story, at the very least. But the party in the book is much more fantastical, with dancing, music (from America of all places), punch served in darling sea shells, and everyone - right down to the tiniest forest critter - is invited, and gets to make a wish when the magic man arrives.Â
09 An Invisible Friend / 10 The Invisible Child: I wouldnât say that these episodes, featuring the famous character from Tales of Moominvalley, have any life-ruining changes from the original story. But since no episode is complete without a bit of drama, or a pointless cameo from Snufkin, a scene where Stinky traps Ninny with the intention of having her assist in his robberies has been written in. And Little Myâs comment regarding the aunt in the English dub, where she states âI hope you told her she hurt Ninnyâs feelings!â seems uncharacteristically gentle in comparison to her asking if Too-Ticky âbashed her head inâ.
13 The Last Dragon on Earth: As mentioned in the entry above, some episodes will include new subplots or elements for the sake of drama and action. This episode is another example of that, but otherwise it has only minor tweaks. Snufkin states that âthe cardsâ have told him he should leave Moominvalley early if he catches x number of such-and-such a fish, but that storyline is exclusive to this show.
14 Our Neighbor is a Touch Teacher: This episode is based on snippets of the comic strip âMoominmammaâs Maidâ, but scraps the storyline containing the titular character from the strip, which is nearly all of it. Instead, it is entirely focused on the Moominâs new neighbor, Mrs Fillyjonk, a strict and uptight mother of three.
After the Moominâs welcome party leaves Mrs Fillyjonk fearing for her life, she forbids her children from playing with the Moomin brood. They sneak away anyway. A bunch of death defying stunts happen, courtesy of Stinky. Mrs Fillyjonk plans to leave the valley, but the kids have none of that. This is almost an original story, save for the existence of a party.
16 A Close Encounter with Aliens: Once again we have an episode based on the comics. It follows the basic plotline of the Moomins caring for a stranded Martian child. But a lot of wackiness was cut for time, including invisible Moomins pranking valley residents, a flying fire brigade, and Moomin shrinking down with Mamma, who later bites a Fillyjonk child. Time used for an inserted chase scene with Stinky (one of many across the tv series) feels couldâve been better spent on some of the fun stuff mentioned in my previous sentence.
17 A Change of Air: And yet another comic-based episode, this one taken from âMoomin and Family Lifeâ, which happens to be my personal favourite comic so this analysis may sound bitterer than others. The episode cuts the beginning of the strip, where we see a lonely parent-less Moomin contemplate suicide before being reunited with his long lost Moominmamma and Moominpappa. The comic is a completely different entity from the books and adjustments must be made, so this decision is understandable. But the following choice? Less so.
The episode instead starts with Pappa complaining that nothing exciting ever happens, and I wonât remind him of the events from episode 16 because everyone brings that up. Stinky overhears plans of doing something to entertain him, and during the night makes a set of giant footprints leading to the sea. Whereas in the comic strip, the âgiantâ prints are innocently left by Snufkin who was wearing boot too big for he gotdamn feet. He nearly perishes for this grave mistake.
Strips where Moominmamma and Moominpappa hang out in a cave, Moomin sheds a few tears tears, and Snufkin offers some half hearted words of comfort provide a basis for following scenes in the episode. But antics with Moomin and friends trying to foil Aunt Jane, who angrily travelled to the Moominhouse after being pranked by Pappa, are sadly missing.Â
24 Hurry Up Snufkin: The part where Snufkin meets and later names the forest creature Teetywoo, is based on the short story âThe Spring Tuneâ. There are many potential gripes one can have about such a brief scene.
A lot of the dialogue between the two characters reflects what is said in the short story, but what the episode sorely lacks are Snufkinâs feelings. Gone are his shouts and snaps, his grumpiness about being disturbed, his regret when he lashes out, his desperation to find Teetywoo again. His famous line âIâll come when it suits meâ is âcried violentlyâ, making me wonder how it ever became an inspirational quote (oh wait I know). In favour of portraying Snufkin as cool and chill, the anime sometimes ends up making him look more like an emotionless bump on a log.
The plotline of Snufkin being late to return because he is trying to compose a new song has been cut, on account of either his lack of talent or lack of music budgeting.
25 The Lighthouse / 26 The Day the Lighthouse Lit Up: These episodes actually combine elements of two different stories: the comic strip âMoomin and the Seaâ, and the similarly titled novel âMoominpappa at Seaâ. Lacking most of the typical shenanigans from the strips, or bleak themes from the book, these episodes feel more like a slightly above-average family outing.
The episodes seems to lean more towards the comic, where Moominpappa takes on the job of lighthouse keeper as inspiration for his writing, and Moomin is terrorised by an equally frightened ghost. Too-Ticky unfortunately is missing from the episodes, alone with the scenes where she shares some spooky suggestions with the spectre, and where Snorkmaiden fakes her own drowning to help Moomin feel brave.Â
Borrowing from the books, we meet both the former lighthouse keeper and a little boy named Toft, who apparently got very lost on his way to auditions for a âMoominvalley in Novemberâ episode. The episode scraps the element from the book of Moominpappa making the entire family miserable because he has some deluded fantasy about protecting and providing for them on his own, as well as a heart wrenching subplot involving the Groke, which I will not spoil for those considering reading it. But know this: there will be tears.Â
28 The Floating Theatre / 29 The Lost Children / 30 Midsummer: This three-parter is based on âMoominsummer Madnessâ, which is kind of an interesting book. Taking place smack dab in the middle of the series, we see it move away from the more lighthearted tones of the early stories, and begin the shift towards the less fantastical and more serious themes of the later books. But it isnât quite there yet. And being written around the time Tove still worked on the comic series, some parts of the book would not seem out of place if drawn in her strips.
The most noticeably difference between the original story and anime episodes is the change of the cast. With the number of characters and subplots happening at once in the book, it was inevitable that some unlucky sod would get scrapped from the story - three sods in fact, by the names of Mymble, Misabel, and Whomper. Sniff is inserted into the story, and references to Mr Fillyjonk, the stage manager and Emmaâs late husband, are removed.Â
Snufkin and Myâs subplot is changed and cut quite short, beginning with the element of the two not knowing each other. His assault on the park keeper seems to be done for the sake of rescuing the children more or less imprisoned in the park, but book Snufkin simply took joy in breaking the law. The episode lacks great scenes of him trying to take care of the 24 little children; doing things like making silly noises, threatening to drown himself, and exposing them to second hand smoke.Â
With a small handful of characters missing, the plot of the play Moominpappa writes greatly differs from the book. And say goodbye to the ending chapter, where the reunited Moomin family flees the police and gets chased all the way back to Moominvalley.Â
45 Moomin Builds a House: This episode is based on the comic of the same title. Although it cuts the story quite short, what is left in is relatively close to the original. Except for the insertion of Snufkin, but I am not offended because that adorable laugh made his appearance worthwhile.
59, 63, 68 Adventures of Moominpappa:Â And here we get to the episodes based on âThe Exploits of Moominpappaâ. The first few changes Iâd like to point out are a little less notable. As Mrs Fillyjonk was already more established in the show, the Hemulen aunt becomes a Fillyjonk. Edward is a silent character, the Nibling child that Pappa and co look after is absent, and everyone gets real ugly colour palettes.Â
Next, as you may know, the original books donât really follow a solid timeline and canon changes in between stories. So in an attempt to make more sense, the young Mymble that Moomin meets is Little Myâs mother, rather than her sister. But strangely, Moominpappaâs other friends are no longer the parents of Sniff and Snufkin. Why those two were still so enraptured by listening to his story is unclear.
Comet in Moominland: Finishing off the list is a movie based on the story of the same name. Being the first in what is considered the âmainâ book series, there are bound to be differences in how characters are written. But there is no difference here more worth talking about than Snufkin.
As Iâve already mentioned before, he is portrayed in the anime as more relaxed. He is the older and most mature member of Moominâs group of friends, and tends to be reserved in expressing his emotions. For the sake of presenting Snufkin as a responsible figure, he never teaches the gang his favourite game: rolling boulders down cliffs, an activity which almost results in multiple casualties. We never hear his story about disrespecting a police officer, and his subsequent prison break.
But Snufkin in the earlier books is very much a child like the rest of the main cast. He is playful and talkative, being described as bringing âgaietyâ to their adventure, and is always thrilling his friends with epic tales from his travels. He is not shy about expressing himself, he is shown to have some sadness about having no parents and cries his wee heart out upon sees the dried up ocean.
Other changes may seem more innocuous by comparison, snipping a party scene and river raft ride, and including Little My. But with the lack of a noticeable personality for a key character, and some of the action scenes, much of the movie just feels like a boring hike home.
~
In short, yeah. As you can see Iâm pretty passionate on this subject, especially when it comes to Snufkinâs characterisation. Anyone who wishes to discourse Moomins with me is welcome. Â
#ok most of this was meant to be written funny and it was fun for me#but you can probably tell which points i got more carried away#there were a few episodes i wouldve covered ex aunt jane but i dont enjoy them as much and couldnt make their entries funny#moomin#mine#Anonymous

Netflix Shifts Gears with 'Special,' a Gay Comedy About Being in a Different Kind of Closet
hereâs what you can expect from Netflixâs new (short!) comedy series âSpecial.â

"Special" signals a change may be in store for Netflix.
Based on the life and 2015 memoir "I'm Special: And Other Lies We Tell Ourselves" by Ryan O'Connell, the new comedy series, debuting on the streaming service Friday, follows a version of the 31-year-old writer. Like the real O'Connell, the character he plays, Ryan Keyes, is a young openly gay man with cerebral palsy. "Special" tracks Ryan after he scores an internship at a popular blog called Egg Woke as well as his relationship with his single mother Karen (the wonderful Jessica Hecht) as he plans to finally move out of her home.
"Special," where Jim Parsons and his husband Todd Spiewak serve as executive producers, is unlike any other comedy on TV. Not just in terms of content â the show gives a platform to a unique voice with a different outlook on life that's never been shown on the small screen before, but also when it comes to structure. In a way, "Special" feels like a throwback series; something like "High Maintenance" before it aired on HBO and lived online as a popular web series. It's a brisk comedy consisting of eight episodes that clock in at just fifteen minutes each â a first for a Netflix sitcom. That means the first season is two hours in total and plays out like the first two acts of a really long rom-com. It's an easily binge-able watch that can be done in one sitting and the season's bite-size length results in a fresh and lean show, where O'Connell writes all the episodes (he's written for TV before, penning episodes for "Will & Grace") and Anna Dokoza serves as director.
The comedy's short runtime is a testament to how smart and funny "Special" can be. It moves quickly and doesn't waste a moment. The show starts off with Ryan getting involved in a minor car accident, just before he scores his gig at Egg Woke. He's a little bruised but he uses the accident to hide his cerebral palsy from his new coworkers, effectively putting him in a different kind of closet. (This actually happened to O'Connell in real life when he was 20 and detailed the experience for the Thought Catalog at the time.) Though he's comfortable with his sexuality â talking about boys with his mom and his new work BFF Kim (a great performance from Punam Patel), the website's top blogger â Ryan is still struggling with being labeled as "a gay disabled man." He thrives for independence and acceptance but hasn't yet dealt with those issues internally.
Like all sitcoms, a lot of hijinks and tension comes from Ryan's need to keep up the ongoing lie. But the best parts of "Special" are Ryan's relationship between his mother and Kim. Hecht doesn't play Karen as a typical TV mom and O'Connell writes her as a fleshed-out woman, presumably after his own mother. Though she can be overbearing and overprotective of Ryan, she has agency and needs. And like her son, she's got a secret of her own: Karen strikes up a relationship with Phil (Patrick Fabian), her salt-and-pepper haired new next-door neighbor. One part of Karen's life that's underdeveloped is her relationship with her mom, Ryan's grandmother. In one episode, we see Karen, a nurse, taking care of her aging mother and it's an important moment that contextualizes Karen's relationship with Ryan. But she never appears in "Special" again this season, likely leaving viewers wanting a bit more.
Patel's Kim, too, is a fully realized character. A plus-sized woman of color, Kim is mostly an open book and hilarious, but also kind, willing to help Ryan settle into Egg Woke and introduce him to her own friends. The only character on "Special" that feels contrived is Olivia (Marla Mindelle), the editor-in-chief of the website, who is an updated version of Meryl Streep's "The Devil Wears Prada" diva Miranda Priestly.
At times "Special" feels like it is set in 2008; at a time when the now-defunct Gawker was one of the most important websites in the world and ruled Internet culture. Ryan says "LOL" out loud (as in, "loll") and the vibe of Egg Woke feels comparable to the fictional magazine in the 2004 romcom "13 Going On 30." That makes sense since O'Connell thrived during the rise of the blogging age but it can be jarring when a character references something modern, like the 2015 film "Room" or car-sharing services making you remember "Special" is set in 2019.
In such a short amount of time, "Special" effortlessly moves from being sweet to being nasty and even shockingly raw. An episode dealing with Ryan's virginity is brave while never getting too saccharine. The season ends on a bit of a clichĂŠd cliff hanger-of-sorts but it doesn't come close to sinking the show. With 15-minute episodes the comedy comes into its own without overstaying its welcome. O'Connell, however, recently told Vulture it wasn't his idea to do short episodes.
"I'm a half-hour bitch, okay? That's what I know. Honey, I don't go chasing 15-minute waterfalls," he explained. "I stick to the rivers and lakes that I'm used to, and that is a 30-minute show, okay? I'm actually really glad that Netflix bought it as is because if they wanted to do a half hour, I'd have to rewrite the entire series and that would not be fun.
"But for season two, mama wants a half hour!" he added.
If Netflix grants "Special" a second season, it'll still be O'Connell's brainchild and interesting if the sitcom and still feel its oats while being twice as long.

Home and Half Bios: Xerci
I got super carried away with Xerciâs bio since I was having so much fun. OTL
Because thereâs not much to say about babies, a lot of Xerciâs bio focuses on his biological parents and what heâll be like when he grows up.
Therefore, his bio is NOT spoiler-free!
Name: Xerci Kul Kogane
Age: 2.2 (Galra years)/20 months (Earth time)
Birthday: 40th of Catik, E11304 (Galra cal.)/October 13th (Earth cal.)
Height: Getting him to hold still long enough to measure is a difficult thing, but Xerci is about 24 inches tall (67 ri) currently. He will not stay this way for long.
Weight: 15.6 vit/75 lbs. A bit chubby. He wonât stay this way for long either.
Species: Half Galra, half Ixillis. Like the other two Galra children, Xerci undoubtedly has ancestors from other species across the universe, but his father, Myvon Vulis Khaez, was an unremarkable looking man who easily passed for a full-blooded Galra.
Family Story: Unlike Dulsaraâs mother and Nireshâs parents, Myvonâs ancestral line was from the near south, on the temperate mountainous border between Daibazaalâs northern desert and the frigid southern shadow; therefore, like Kolivan and many others, although he was a furred Galra, his fur was very short, to the point that in many places it might simply be mistaken for purple skin. Possessed of a mild and unambitious temperament and from a low-to-midling family in the Galra social hierarchy, Myvon was a fairly low-ranking soldier with no real interest in being part of the military. He lacked any special loyalties to Zarkon, and took employment in the armed forces only because it seemed like the easiest career to pursue after having just graduated from school with nothing more than mediocre grades to show. This is not to say that Myvon was unintelligent or incompetent in any way; rather, he was a sensitive but pessimistic young person whose drive and motivation were deeply eroded by the terrible reality of life in the Galra Empire. Why bother trying for any other career when youâre liable to end up drafted anyway? Why bother studying hard when the military will take you even if you can barely read? Why bother putting in effort to rise through the ranks of soldiers, when low-ranking soldiers get assigned to peaceful, meaningless bases far, far from High Command, where nothing bothersome ever really happens?
Despite (or perhaps because of) his lack of dedication to the Galra Empire, good luck seemed to follow Myvon wherever he went: he was accepted to a non-combat routine maintenance position immediately after graduating, on one of the most desirable outposts in all the outer rim of the empire: Ixionide, home to the ethereally beautiful Ixillis, whom not even the empire wished to attack. Although he felt like his own looks and even personality were nothing to write home about, within mere months of service on the base, Myvon found himself in the clutches of Celandine, an Ixillis woman of unsurpassed beauty but a tragically fickle heart.
As a race, the faun-like Ixillis are best described as a perfect product of their planetâs environment: Ixionide would easily suit the human definition of paradise. Prior to the Galra occupation, the Ixillis were Ixionideâs only sentient race and the only large mammalian species on the entire planet. Gently rolling hills, lush forests, and crystal clear rivers coat the landscape, locked in a seemingly eternal spring, with no deep winter to wither the flowers or harsh summer heat to crack the soil. The planet is home to no native venomous animals or poisonous plants, no towering cliffs to fall from, no volcanoes to erupt... Essentially, before the Galra arrived, the Ixillis dwelt in an extremely safe realm in which there were no natural disasters, no natural predators, no endemic diseases, and a virtually never-ending supply of food and other resources, preventing any need for conflict.
This total lack of threats profoundly affected the evolution of the Ixillis species. They are a race entirely without fearâthey simply cannot feel itâand thus they behave in ways that seem unspeakably reckless and even negligent to other races. They do not build permanent homes, trusting that there will never be weather poor enough to require a roof over their heads. They have no form of government, nor do they even have a concept of private propertyâthey simply wander wherever and whenever they like, living in and off of the planetâs endless bountiful forests. They have no need to band together for safety or to consolidate resources, and therefore maintain relatively solitary lives, greeting other wandering Ixillis they encounter like happy accidents, well-met fellow travelers on the road of life. They adopted clothing only after the Galra arrivedânot because they suddenly felt it necessary to cover up, but because they found the concept so hilariously novel. Ixillis have no need to work and therefore no form of currency. They do not barter or trade, but will happily accept gifts, up to and including the âgiftâ of a Galra baseâŚ
Unfortunately for Myvon, monogamous relationships are unheard of among the Ixillis. They fear no jealous lovers nor incurable diseases, feel no need to âmake a homeâ anywhere, and do not worry about their offspringâs futures; therefore, they drift from lover to lover just as easily as they drift from meadow to meadow. The Hippies of the American 1960s wish theyâd achieved love this free. The very idea of âsettling downâ is entirely laughable to the Ixillisâthey genuinely do not understand how remaining with one person, in one place, for any extended period of time, could possibly have any meaningful benefits.
Ixillis children experience their parentsâ carefree lifestyles from the moment they are born, and have also evolved to suit: it is extremely rare to find an infant Ixillis still in the care of its mother past one month old. At just two weeks, they can already crawl and eat solid foods, and because foraging is spectacularly easy on Ixionide, children as young as three weeks of age can typically find sufficient food on their own. Despite this prodigious ability to feed themselves, however, Ixillis children develop very slowly in all other regards. They do not need to master language, mathematical reasoning, or any higher brain functions for a long period of timeâthey donât even need to learn how to run, because thereâs nothing on Ixionide to chase them. Given that long lifespans are simply par for the course where Ixillis are involved, slow mental and physical development is of no concern. They all have time.
Naturally, none of this coincides very well with the regimented, traditional lifestyle of the Galra Empire. Myvon met Celandine when she simply wandered through the gates of the Galra base because she wondered what sheâd find inside. He was immediately taken in by her otherworldly beauty (Ixillis have plenty of time to spend making themselves pretty, since thereâs nothing much else to worry about!), but the most charming thing about her was her utterly dauntless curiosity, which no number of stern warnings could dissuade. No matter how many times Myvon tried to tell her she couldnât stroll about naked on the base, that she couldnât just ask whatever questions about their operations popped into her head, and that she most certainly could not just⌠just⌠touch without permission, Celandine could not care less about the great and terrible âEmperor Zarkonâ and the empty threats that accompanied his name.
For someone like Myvon, who lived his whole life just going with the flow, not sticking his neck out at all, Celandineâs audacity was equal measures terrifying, exhilarating, and irresistible. But although his growing admiration for her was genuine, Celandine had no special interest in changing her ways and planting roots in a dark metal military base, far from the freedom of the sunlit forests. Perhaps secretly, Myvon may have thought that having a child would encourage his flighty mate to settle, but though Celandine showed her newborn son as much affection as any Ixillis parent could, her fascination with the Galra eventually waned, taking with it any reason she could see to linger on the outpost any longer.
Xerci was less than two months old when Myvon woke and discovered Celandine was gone, wandering out of his life as suddenly and surely as she had wandered in. Faced with the task of raising a hybrid infant on an empire base without assistance, with minimal understanding of Ixillis development and needs, and at the risk of being discovered by any of the numerous less sympathetic higher-ups taking their vacations on the paradise planet, Myvon called in an favor and sent a communication to an old friend, once former member of his coalition: Yedgi Kir Ne Ven.
With Yedgiâs (and Ulzraniâs) help, Myvonâs transfer to Pishkos was approved quickly, and Xerci immediately attached himself to his new babysitter and the other Galra children on the base (much to both Dulsara and Nireshâs deep regret).
Xerciâs mental development is faster than normal Ixillis, but still noticeably slower than Galra. Unlike most Galra children, who by 20 Earth months old would already be speaking in simple sentences and forming rudimentary episodic memory, Xerci will not really have the cognitive and linguistic capabilities to form even semi-coherent long-term memories until he is at least three or four Earth years old. Unfortunately, this means he will never have a single memory of his biological fatherâor that he even used to live somewhere else before coming to the Castle of Lions. For all intents and purposes (no matter how much Dulsara tries to correct the impression), even in his earliest memories, the only father Xerci is ever going to remember is Keith.
Appearance: At the moment, Xerci resembles nothing so much as a small purple watermelon. He is a round little baby, with a penchant for curling up like an armadillo when left to his own devices, furthering the image. Currently, his deer-like ears are slightly oversized for his head, as he hasnât grown into them yet. Although he has Galra hands, his claws are notably smaller than a full Galraâs would be, and his feet do not resemble normal Galra talons at all: he has dainty little cloven hooves, just like his mother (though with his boots on, no one notices). Unlike Dulsara and Niresh, he does not have a Galra sagittal crest. Big-eyed and perpetually grinning, but with a baby fang or two still not erupted, Xerci has an air of saccharine sweetness about him that leads everyone who sees him to assume he will grow up into a short, soft, squishy sort of adult who will always have his arms open for a hug.
And they would be very, very wrong. The only one of the children to be removed from the heavy Pishkos atmosphere and limited military food rations at an early enough stage of development, Xerci will eventually achieve the height of an average full-blooded Galra male, at least seven feet tall, and in the process lose all his baby fat, trading it for the broad shoulders and whipcord lean muscles of healthy Galra adults. Yet he will also grow gracefully into the regal looks he inherited from his mother: the same shapely, curving eyes under heavy lashes, narrow elfin chin, high-bridged nose, delicate line of his neck, textbook symmetry and proportions, with velvet suede fur, a prim little tail, and a perfect crown of jet black antlers settled around his somehow artfully tussled, wisteria-colored hairâin short, Xerci is going to grow up to be devastatingly beautiful. (And thanks to Lance, heâs absolutely going to know how to use it. His white, wicked grins? They warn their girls about those on more than one planet.)
Strengths/Skills: As of right now, Xerci doesnât have much in the way of strengths or skills, unless you count being cute, which he is good at (at least occasionally, when he isnât being clingy as a purple octopus or whiny as a Warâyanian sqwogbom). But life in the Castle of Lions, with so many different sources of guidance (plenty of it conflicting) and near constant exposure to new sights, new cultures, and new customs is going to ultimately shape Xerci into a truly unique young man. Spending all his formative years leaping between alien races, each with their own complex patterns of communication, ways of expressing emotion, and senses of morality will give Xerci stunning insight into peopleâwhy they act the way they do, what motivates them, what they really mean when they obfuscate, and how genuine they might (or might not) be. Although Xerci will never be as book smart as Dulsara nor as observant as Niresh, his emotional intelligence leaves both of them in the dust, even given Dulsaraâs advantage of being slightly empathic. Xerci is going to grow up dangerously street wise, with a keen understanding of what makes people tick. Within seconds of meeting someone, heâll already know how to make them laugh, how to bring out the best in them, how to win them over (âŚor how to break them down completely). Like Lance, Xerci is a people person who loves to be in the spotlight. Nothing makes him happier than commanding other peopleâs love and aweâor manipulating that awe and respect to get exact what he wants, exactly when he wants it.
Because Xerci is cunning. With just the flash of a pretty, cleverly affected grin, he has the universe wrapped around his little finger, right where he wants them. Perilous social interactions and intricate machinations are like candy to him, and he delights in running rings around less socially adept people (up to and including poor Keith). Anyone he turns his charms on canât help falling for his guileless, well-meaning façade, his friendly touches, his casual flirtations⌠And Xerci not only enjoys the effect he has on others, but has weaponized this innate magnetism to make sure that he (and anyone he considers his own) comes out ahead in every situation. Xerci is the consummate diplomat: charismatic, refined, conciliatory, extroverted, just the right degree of self-deprecating, with a keen sense of witty humor and an evident hunger to excel. If peace needs to be made between the bitterest rivals, he can make it. (And if the smoldering embers of revolution need to be fanned back up into flames, well⌠he can do that easily too.)
But Xerci is not malicious, heâs just a born actor. Putting on a charming persona is as automatic to him as breathing, and even if his performances arenât genuine, Xerci does genuinely have fun fooling people and stealing the spotlight, so long as itâs harmless⌠or, barring that, at least done in the service of the greater good. Xerci carefully reserves his tricks for people who wonât be hurt by themâor for people who deserve to be hurt by them. Though Nireshâs stealthy ability to observe unnoticed is a prime skill for espionage, Xerciâs ability to ingratiate himself to anyone and everyone actually makes him one of the most effective spies in the entire greater alliance.
Unlike Dulsara who struggles to handle peopleâs capricious whims, or Niresh, who doesnât care to bother in the first place, Xerci knows that true power isnât fists or fighter craftâitâs who you know. Â Â
Weaknesses: Although Xerci is a natural extrovert, his friendly exterior belies a more unsettled inner-life. Xerci is actually a fiercely private person who never lets anyone get too close to his âreal selfâ (wonder where he learned that from). Heâs the type of guy youâre best friends with for ten years before you realize that you donât even know his favorite color, let alone where he actually stands on any matters of deep importance. This extreme discomfort in putting himself out there, coupled with his natural ability to throw on a distracting mask without even blinking, means that itâs sometimes hard for Xerci to actually let people in, even when he actually wants to. Frequently the team has to remind him that, as much as they enjoy his impish act, itâs okay if heâs lets it go every once in a while and just relaxes. Even more than Dulsara, Xerci despises feeling vulnerable, and heâs become so used to hiding behind an outgoing persona that anyone who gets âtoo closeâ runs the risk of being perceived as a threat. Xerciâs so-called social circle spans from one side of the known universe to the other, but as for real friends⌠he doesnât have very many. (No matter what anyone says, Keith blames himself for this, and the accompanying guilt puts a strain on his interactions with Xerci sometimes.)
Although Xerci is clever enough to avoid getting himself into trouble so deep thereâs no way out, drama is his guilty pleasure, and so, in the course of his work, he frequently ends up in the heart of political and social scandals that could make even Coran blush. And despite the fact that no one can ever quite recall Xerci having any actual romantic relationships, 90% of the alien races he meets with are convinced that none of their girls should ever go unsupervised with such a handsome rogue, a fact which has made peace talks on planets with princesses particularly troublesome many times.
At the end of the day, Xerciâs worst flaw is that he grew up being absolutely, horrendously spoiled by every single member of Team Voltron, even Shiro and Allura. Whatever he wanted, he got. Whenever he craved attention or affection, it was freely and immediately given. Nothing he asked for was ever unattainable, and if one person (cough, Keith) told him no, heâd simply work his way down the list of team members until someone finally told him yes. Although heâs less obnoxious about it as an adult, Xerci is still very used to people bending over backward to serve him, and heâs definitely not afraid to wheedle, trick, whine, and moan his way to whatever wants.
Favorites:
- Food: Ixillis children have no drive other than to ensure their own survival by eating anything and everything they come across. Xerci, despite being half-Galra, is no exception to this instinct. He is a completely un-discerning eater and will devour everything put in front of himâsometimes even when what is put in front of him isnât actually food. If it looks remotely edible, you can bet that Xerci will attempt to eat it, much to the horror of many small alien species Team Voltron came across in the early years. Ixillis are largely herbivorous, while Galra are primarily carnivorous. Â Xerci falls somewhere in-between, a true omnivore, and is therefore able to eat and enjoy a much wider range of food than Dulsara and Niresh, who are mesocarnivores. An un-picky eater, itâs difficult to tell whether Xerci has any favorite food at all, but he absolutely never turns down anything with sugar in itâthe sweeter, the better.
- Color: Cool green-blues and dove or gunmetal greys, although he also knows the value of a flashy entrance and often dresses accordingly instead. Despite the fact that it looks terrible on him, Xerci still has a soft spot for âthe crimson of House Koganeâ (or maybe itâs just that he enjoys teasing Keith about it? Hard to tell.)
- Smell: Money. >_> Okay, being serious, Xerci is definitely a lover of luxury and extravagance. With a less sensitive nose than the other children or even Keith, Xerci can put up with many bold smells that other Galra wrinkle their snouts at. Scents that might waft around the palaces of princes and queens are par for Xerciâs course: jasmine, sandalwood, patchouli, allspice, cinnamon, orange, myrrh, chai.
- Animal: As a child, Xerci was the sort of oblivious boy who could barely telling living animals from stuffed animals. They were never really big on his registerâeven growing up, he got much more enjoyment out of being near people. Xerci can be cordial with animals, particularly calm ones, but (perhaps a bit ironically) dominant and noisy animals bother him. Has a long-lasting and disproportionate grudge against Kaltenecker, who has done no wrong ever. Xerci will leave the husbandry to Niresh, thanks.
- Voltron Lion: Like with real animals, Xerciâs ambivalence toward things that cannot hold active conversations with him extends to the Voltron lions too. He digs in his heels at the Red Lionâs pushy attitude, the Green Lionâs assertive curiosity, and the Black Lionâs ever-watchful eye. Though Lance insists the Blue Lion loves Xerci and his goofball nature, Xerci himself was never able to relate to its role as the teamâs selfless emotional pillar. So, Yellow Lion it is. Still, thereâs something about the Yellow Lionâs gentle, modest nature that appeals to Xerci. Not to mention Hunk and Yellow can make the exact kind of Big Damn Entrance Xerci loves to delight people with sometimes.
- Pastime: Shopping, and he does not care at all how girly you think his hobby is. Or how many bitter tears Keith has cried over his âmysteriouslyâ emptied wallets over the years. Allura is Xerciâs worst enabler; their habit of buying each other extremely tacky jewelry is a running family joke. Unironically owns a pair of Gucci shades. Heâs on first-name basis with salespeople at twenty different space malls.
- Place in the Castle of Lions: Wherever Keith is, always. All the time. 24/7. From the time he was tiny. Naturally he grows out of this as he gets older, except⌠not really? Even when heâs grown enough to tower over everyone else in the castle, the first place anyone looks for him is wherever Keith is currently haunting. For a while, this was a source of extreme hilarity to everyone else, watching Keith being trailed by the universeâs tallest, purplest duckling. On his part, it took Keith a very long time after Xerciâs growth from bean to beanpole to realize that Xerci still wanting to spend so much time with him might look weird to other people. To Keith, Xerciâs constant pestering presence is just⌠normal. Itâs the times Xerciâs not around that feel strange.
Dislikes: - Any sort of serious verbal conflict. Getting chased out of a foreign palace by aunts wielding hatpins by incensed alien chiefs is one thing (which Xerci would call fun), but actual person-to-person arguments deeply disturb him; once the screaming and hurling insults starts, Xerci is immediately gone. His poor pacifist Ixillis heart canât take it, and being yelled at by any of the few people he actually cares about can make him physically nauseous. Â
- People who refuse to play his intricate games of aristocratic intrigue. Boring.
- Being touched by people he doesnât deeply care about. He puts up with it for the sake of his everyoneâs-best-friend persona, but he really doesnât like it. Even as a tiny child he was this way.
- Buy one, get one half off sales. THATâS NOT A REAL SALE, DAMMIT.
- Being told what he can and cannot eat. (Who cares if that might be poisonous? I want it.)
- Kaltenecker.
- The fact that he has to get every pair of pants he buys tailored because almost nobody sells Galra-shaped pants with the appropriately-sized tail hole.
- Being ignored. The face of true evil is a baby with claws who isnât getting enough attention.
- The fact that royal purple and gold donât look good on him, no matter how much he tries to dress them up.
Weirdest quirk: Ixillis, deeply attuned to nature, travel, and the movement of life energy in a planet, are always aware of which direction they are facing. Even on planets with reversed magnetic fields, bizarre alien geometry, pure and utter darkness with no light to see by, while blindfolded, after being spun around in dizzying circles⌠It doesnât matter, Xerci can always find true north instantly. Heâs essentially a living compass, an extremely useful skill to have while lost on missions. However, being partly of a wandering breed, Xerci did not inherit the Galra homing instinct, and therefore even if he knows which direction he is going, he often does not know which direction he should be going. Niresh is not helpful in the slightest, but they make frequent roaming partners. For a while Lance sewed âIf lost, please returned toâ tags inside all of Xerciâs uniforms. And you know, sometimes getting lost leads you to the very best adventuresâŚ
Just for fun: - Hogwarts house: Slytherin (A friendly Slytherin, truly dangerousâŚ)
- DnD class: Bard
- Favorite Disney movie: Aladdin
- Earth Horoscope/Chinese Zodiac signs: Libra, Fire Monkey
- Lucky number: 9
- Best Earth school subject: Government
- Earth Spirit Animal: Egyptian Mau

âTwin Peaksâ: 7 Powerful Moments When Kyle MacLachlan Barely Moves
Kyle MacLachlan is giving one of the best performances in television history, and he's barely had to move a muscle.
Recently, Seth Meyers imagined what his NBC talk show might look like if it was set in The Red Room. Despite the opportunity for easy potshots at the preposterousness of âTwin Peaks,â the two-minute segment played it pretty straight.
The original opening titles were reincorporated along with the 4:3 framing of the original seasons. There were stand-ins for Laura Palmer and The Man From Another Place, while Meyers took over the role of Agent Dale Cooper. For anyone familiar with the series, the video homage was quite fun. For anyone else, it wouldâve been quite weird.
But one thing stood out above the rest: Seth Meyers was moving too much.
Now, thatâs not a slight against Meyers. His take on Agent Cooper was about as physically restrained as possible, barring any lessons from the robotic on-and-off acting of the âWestworldâ cast. But there was still too much movement.
Thatâs how extraordinary Kyle MacLachlan has been in âTwin Peaks: The Return.â
Despite the timing of the sketch, Meyers was drawing from the scene in Season 1, Episode 3, âZen, or The Skill to Catch a Killer,â not Agent Cooper from âThe Return.â The performances are different. In Season 1, he was a first-time, part-time visitor to The Red Room. In âThe Return,â heâs been trapped there for 25 years. The former is a little more expressive; a little more fluid. The latter is stoic and stunted; trapped in a cage barely restraining his true spirit.
As fans have come to accept in Season 3, Dale Cooper is different. Heâs a man of many names; almost as many as the characters MacLachlan plays. Heâs Dougie Jones to everyone in Las Vegas, but heâs still Dale Cooper to those in the know (viewers, mainly). For a brief time, MacLachlan played the real Dougie Jones, too, and heâs still playing the mysterious Mr. C â Agent Cooperâs doppelgänger and Dougieâs creator â in addition to Dale Cooper.
But above all else, heâs still. MacLachlan has achieved so much by barely moving. Letâs celebrate that, shall we?
1. Dougie is Scared (âPart 3â)
We donât know much about Dougie, and most of what we do know is bad. Dougie cheats on his wife with a prostitute. Dougie racks up huge gambling debts instead of spending time with his son. Dougie is friends with the insurance dirtbag Anthony Sinclair (Tom Sizemore), but not that good of friends since Tony turned on Dougie at the drop of a hat.
Dougie doesnât last long, but the empathy viewers have for him in the moment above has quadrupled since it first aired. Dougie is just having an ordinary Tuesday with Jade, banging in an open house near his actual home, when he keels over and disappears. Confused and in pain, Dougie is transported to The Red Room so Mr. C can roam freely. He only sits with MIKE (Phillip Gerard) for a second, but in that brief amount of time, MacLachlan gives Dougie his humanity.
He struggles to turn his head, but itâs unclear whether heâs held captive in his chair or too scared to move. What matters is the fear in his eyes: MacLachlan takes Dougie from wide-eyed confusion to beleaguered anxiety in just a few lines. He never understands why heâs there or whatâs happening to him. Heâs just a construct, and even when MIKE tells him so, he doesnât understand. He never realizes heâs not a real person. MacLachlan informs all of that, and gives Dougie his dignity right before he disappears.
2. Cooper Sees Himself (âPart 4â)
Thereâs a lot to admire about Cooperâs first morning as Dougie Jones, but MacLachlanâs deft blending of absurd comedy and true poignancy is outstanding. After being ushered into the bathroom clutching his crotch, the audience is prepped for an outlandish first foray with the family. Janey-E is impatient. Sonny Jim is amused. Cooper, well, we donât know what Cooper is feeling.
But heâs feeling something, and thatâs what matters. Evoked in a brief, basic motion, the shot above is simple and speaks to the seriesâ ongoing fascination with duality. MacLachlan moves less than the camera does, staring intently at his own image and then the lack of connection between his hand and its mirror image. Cooper is still searching. Heâs still a seeker. Heâs still himself, but âTwin Peaksâ has changed, and MacLachlan is adapting with it, ever so patiently.
The brief scene shreds the idea that Cooper is now just someone to laugh at; that weâre just waiting for him to âsnap out of itâ and go back to his old self while he can barely control his bladder and wears a tie over his head. MacLachlan makes the above moment stick by giving Cooper as much pathos as piss jokes.
3. Mr. C Sees Diane (âPart 7â)
Please donât make me watch this scene again. MacLachlan is so unnerving in his unblinking intensity â and Laura Dern, as Diane, so angry, hurt, and unsettled â that itâs a difficult moment to revisit. Much of Mr. Câs intimidating presence stems from this moment. We know what heâs capable of because of the authority he conveys even when handcuffed behind bars (well, bulletproof glass).
His brown jumpsuit, restricted positioning, and the generous space between Mr. C and his interrogators should all dwarf his imposing presence. MacLachlan arches his back, stares straight ahead, and â of course â doesnât move an inch, and all of these choices make Mr. C as threatening as ever. Heâs one scary dude, and â thankfully â makes this scene memorable enough that we donât have to go back and re-watch.
4. Cooper Hears Music (âPart 11â)
One could easily argue âPart 11â is Cooperâs most revealing episode to date â and exemplifies MacLachlanâs best work. For one, the last half-hour is entirely Cooperâs story. The funniest scene since âMr. Jackpotsâ kicks things off (see below), but itâs the ending that really hits home. After Cooper survives another death threat, this time from the Mitchum brothers (James Belushi and Robert Knepper), they take him out for celebratory pie â the dessert that just saved his life.
But in between a toast to Dougie and serving the pie, a piano change draws Cooperâs attention. Suddenly heâs transfixed, his head quickly pivoting and his eyes remaining on the pianist until the pie arrives. Even a surprise greeting from a grateful elderly patron â the woman who followed his advice and won thousands at the casino â canât take Mr. Jackpotsâ mind off the melody.
MacLachlan looks past her while she thanks him, unwavering in his focus. Heâs still listening to Angelo Badalamentiâs âHomecoming,â and heâs still remembering a time and place long past. Heâs looking through her as an event that already transpired. He wants to go back to that place; he wants a homecoming. As she leaves and he bites into the cherry pie, itâs as though Cooper is saying goodbye to Dougieâs past and moving ever more consciously toward his future: When MacLachlan says the iconic line, âdamn good [pie],â his slight shift in inflection provides a faint hint of nostalgia and the slightest of hope.
Cooper will return. He wonât be trapped as Mr. Jackpots forever.
5. Cooper Chases Coffee (âPart 11â)
OK, this is perhaps the most movement MacLachlan does outside of taking down The Spike, but look at how restrained he is! Viewers get so much out of this brief comedic bit: For a moment, he looks annoyed. On the way in, he just looks eager. By the end, heâs back to the status quo, as if coffee is the only thing in his life that keeps him alive. And thatâs the beauty of it: An immeasurable number of texts, tweets, and posts undoubtedly used this .gif and a message equivalent to, âThis is me every morning.â MacLachlan captures the universal need for your morning Joe without abandoning Cooperâs stilted state. In short, itâs funny because itâs true.
6. Mr. C Wins an Arm-Wrestling Match (âPart 13â)
This entire scene is based around specificity of movement, so, this entire scene epitomizes Kyle MacLachlanâs intricate understanding of his charactersâ physicality. Not only does he account for the visual intrigue of his choices, but his movements are built from Mr. C and Cooperâs spirits.
Nothing changes about Mr. C during his arm-wrestling match. Heâs the same imposing force heâs always been. But as MacLachlan challenges his opponent to best him, again and again â âLetâs go back to starting positionsâ is still the most badass line ever uttered during an arm-wrestling match â his absolute control over Mr. Câs movements becomes all the clearer.
Just look at the way he shifts in his chair to approach the table. Then watch as his face, head, and neck as they remain motionless while his arm operates like a pulley on a string. Even when MacLachlan is called on to speak (gasp!) and move (wow!), he keeps Cooper and Mr. C as precise as possible: Real Cooper is a little looser; pliable in mind and body, but Evil Cooper is rigid because he knows exactly what he wants and what he needs to do to get it.
7. Cooper Hears the Name âGordon Coleâ (âPart 15â)
Listen, thereâs no telling what exactly got Cooper to do what he did near the end of âPart 15,â but it was hearing Gordon Coleâs name that forever altered his pleasant evening of eating cake and pushing buttons. As âSunset Boulevardâ popped on the TV, Cooper took note. His neutral perspective shifted into a state of bemusement, but no more so than usual. Itâs when Cecil B. DeMille says the fateful words, âGet Gordon Cole,â that MacLachlanâs expression changes entirely, Cooper gets down on the ground, and crawls toward an electrical socket making too much noise.
As proposed in Sunday nightâs review, this could be the end of Cooperâs impersonation of Dougie. Right after he electrocutes himself and collapses, a dying Margaret explains how death âis just a change, not an end.â The version of Cooper oft-referred to as Dougie could die via the same household device that transported him there in the first place, and âTwin Peaksâ will be on to the next iteration of its hero. If so, his time in the Jonesâ household was given a fitting end: a few jerky movements, some subtle adjustments in expression, and a bevy of emotional weight laid down. MacLachlan has done this with Cooper, Dougie, and Mr. C throughout âTwin Peaksâ Season 3, and each part has been deepened by the starâs contribution to it.
MacLachlan hasnât created one new character in âThe Returnâ; heâs built three brand new individuals from the ground up. And he barely had to move a muscle.

Must Read Star Wars Fanfiction Stories 2020
Searching for Star Wars Fanfiction on google and want to read amazing star wars fanfiction crossovers, then wait no further. I have some of the best Fanfiction series that you will rarely find on the internet and trust me guys these are the best fanfiction on star wars series that you will find on the internet.

So Sit back and relax and make sure you enjoy these amazing Star wars fanfiction stories and along with some collection of the star wars fanfiction lemon series that you will find below in the article.

Godlygalligan NO YOU DIDNT DARTH VADER DID HE CRUSHED LIKE THE WEAK MINDED JEDI YOU ARE

kitty cat? All of you you don't have to say Anakin Skywalker if you reply ITS OBVIOUS YOUR TALKING ABOUT HIM!

Ryan Bramble When someone goes to the darkside they usually have a trumatic experience pre-darkside. Like anakin getting most of his body destroyed and losing his lover and the opportunity to raise his children. That obviously broke him. To use the darkside you have to have some rage or sadness since that is what it feeds off.

Connor Schultz We all should know that by now. When someone goes dark side, some how, some way, for some stupid reason the person that you once was isn't.... For some reason.

acephantom903 If the republic never collapsed (which it might have with the droid armies still on patrol because half of the separatist leaders were not captured on Utapau) then there wouldn't have been the break off military group which would have allowed Snoke to get power in the unknown regions. That and he would have had the full jedi council who would have chased him down upon his first contact with the known galaxy. This is ignoring what Snoke may or may not be according to the leaks. If he is what the leaks suggest, that would only make Snoke stronger and more dangerous possibly killing the Skywalker twins before episode 4 to 6. 7-9 could still theoretically happen but things would be very different.

DANIEL M I don't think so, like he said, sometime, in the future, one of Anakin descendents might fall into the dark side, so, the films would happen, but they would be much different

Jonah Wilson True but Ben Solo wouldn't be influenced to the dark side because Darth Vader would have never existed, the first order would have no ground to build on and no resistance would be needed to counter them. Different story entirely.

JoĂŁo Farias The original trilogy could be about how Luke turns to the Dark SIde (as it was intended to happen, maybe motivated by Sidious Force Ghost) in movie IV, killing Anakin and making Yoda fled. Movie V could be about Leia + Force Ghosts x Luke and VI could be about the defeat of Luke and the final reveal of Snoke, plotting everthing from scratch.

Rachel Morris And about the objections on how Snoke would gain power.... Man... He is a millennial dark side vampire. He would find a way....

MandoG Â I believe it is incredibly rare for force ghosts to exist and they can only exist if the person passed the test of the Wills meaning they can embrace both their own light and darkness but chose the light. Here is the whole article in the canon wiki So these were our first list of some of the best star wars fanfiction and we hope you guys liked this fanfic collection.
Star Wars Rebels Fanfiction Updates 2020
The Star Wars franchise is an America based media franchise and Star wars franchise is created by George Lucas, Star Wars began as a normal Series and then gained much popularity as time passed along with many Star wars fanfiction crossover and Star wars Fanfiction lemon lovers all over the world.

訹é˛ćž if palpatine is dead than how will snoke got so many star destroyer and star killer base, those are empires weapon the super laser is constructed to be a bigger scale on the death star Bouncin Well....Vader took over the empire but he's strong and is pre-suit. If you played the game Revenge of the Sith alternate ending. So, 4-6 happens but pre-suit Vader as the new Emperor. Max217 Don't you think that the separatist movement would survive if Grievous made it clear to the galaxy that he is still alive? Once the droid army was shutdown, the people of the CIS were still alive but had no motivation to fight with all their leaders dead. But if Grievous were to show up the war would still continue and they would have a general that could lead them once again. king274 he didnt exactly care for the CIS he just hated the enemies of the CIS. So I doubt the remnants of the CIS would be the first people he'd be looking for. DJ Panda Gaming The prequel movies where made to show the easy corruption of a government and how it manipulated. The separatist army was a basic fake front to start a war, without the current conflict of war, Lord sidious would have never won the power of the people in his efforts to end the FAKE WAR. Reguardless of grevious death, the separatist leaders were being moved to mustafar, a different planet perfect for hiding murder. For all we know sidious sent them their for his plan of having his apprentice eliminate them and grevious would have been safe seeing how he was never mentioned to go with them, however obiwan surprised him by abusing him after the meeting roiking2740 stop that's the thing palpatine were supplying them money to construct the droids in thr first place some cunt actually we learn from the second episode that dooku has gathered a large group of supporting long with their own banking clans that would donate to building a Droid army, along with the abundant resources available on genenosis SkiddyGaming but palpatine hold the majority and not to mention his death at episode 3 so I'm sure most of them dropped out Intrepid Explorer Lol, Abusing. Yeah I guess Obi showing up just standing there and showing off that Grievous couldn't quickly kill the intruder was abusing. Then prying open and shooting between his chest plates was more abuse. AEM reviews it was the only way if the a genetic modified clone who was trained to kill jedi wasn't able to kill grievous the who could the rebellion wouldn't they were to weak at the time and not to mention out skilled So these were some of the best Star Wars Rebels fanfiction in 2020 that you will come across the internet and We hope you guys enjoyed reading it. Star Wars The Clone Wars Fanfiction Because of the popularity of the Star Wars Franchise, the media producers expanded the series into many film parts, tv series, video games, and theme park attraction making room for many star wars fanfiction lemon lovers to be a part of the never-ending fan base. Elderon f he managed to get the word out, I think it would undermine Order 66. Many clones would likely still obey, but there were plenty among them who trusted the Jedi and viewed them as friends. Rex would believe Fives, and I feel Cody would have been the first clone he'd have reached out to Fallen Knight Tylen That's a little difficult to be sure of. He was worried at first about the truth being spread by Fives, but he had things set up to prevent that from happening. So if Fives had been successful in spreading the word, his priority would be trying to regain command over the clones. And there are several ways he could go about doing this. Runsonhappiness But once the words out the words out. So even if he regains control over the clones the soon the entire galaxy will find out he's a sith. The republic would be split into civil war either way. Worlds would start succeeding and possibly a third faction forms in the clone wars. The real question is if it's all revealed would the sepertist fallow Dooku knowing that he was working for Sidious who was leading the republic. john smith make a good point, though Dooku does have Grievous to enforce order. If anyone disagrees with him, he can have Grievous deal with them. And let's face it, the Separatist leaders don't have a lot of courage. Vince Lumontad But here's the thing it only takes one smart courageous person to start a civil war. Plus their own civilian populist would start revolting. And who knows how Grievous himself would react hearing how everything was rigged from the beginning. Brian Anakin would have been allowed to reach his peak (on par with yoda) maybe not by the time all of that takes place but he would surely be stronger with the force than he was as Vader which is scary southparkstudio  ask the Geonosian to build the republic a droid amry and the cis buy clone from Kamin Sergio Torres Maybe the droids built by the Republic would be of far better quality, or not. It would still be interesting to see how the Republic would build their droids and what kind of cloning templates the Separatists would use. Calvin Matthews Without the Clones leading the conflict being called The Clone Wars honestly it probably would have been called the First Galactic Civil War because technically that's what the Clone Wars was, a civil war between the Republic and the Confederates. Majin Taolf I think that would be the name of it if the republic won. But if the seperatists won it would have been something ells in my opinion. Star wars the clone wars is 2008 computer-animated television series. we have many Star wars the clone wars fanfiction lovers reading this Star Wars Fanfiction updates. Star Wars Fanfiction Crossover Very few people know this that star wars fanfiction media series holds a Genius world Record of the "Most Successful Film Merchandise franchise" that makes another reason on the list why most people are interested in Star Wars Fanfiction Crossover collection and Star wars Lemon Fanfiction Collection. Sau 13 Well there are many other games and films with cool ships. Whe hawe Stargate, Warhammer, Sarship Troopers, Starcraft even Warframe joined now. I cant say the Predator mothership because it doesn't really have competition. đ¤ Illutian Kade ya a sequel would be neat hopefully they add more from mass effect besides just the Normandy and reapers they for got about a lot of ships you got to see in the battle for the citadel in mass effect 1 LudBud How about the Cylons are invading Earth and have the BSG arrive with other Battlestars from other realities to stop them. I like the Warhammer 40K universe too. Realist Dude May the emperor s light ve spreadacross the stars... By my Duty The Galaxy will belong to the righteous... By my action the Imperial Navy shall be honoured And remembred upon Holy Terra! FOR THE EMPEROR OF MANKIND AND FOR THE BATTLEFLEET GOTHIC!!!!!!! Babur Dombay it is more likley that Klingons and the covenant would Team up. The Empire would destroy them instead becoming Allies The Reapers would try to kill all of them due there idealogy that if a Race become to advanced they will eridicate them James Cassidy Its missing one certain Imperium. Tho if they did come across them, the Imperium of Man might just accuse them of heresy cuz of their advanced AIs and droid. CP i had this "problem" once the UNCS started sending ships against the Galactic empire, they stormed some of my systems because it were between their frontiers,MY GAME GOT OUT OF HAND AFTERWARDS (the two went against me for attacking their ships on my territory) Fate Weaver I managed to drag a friend of mine into a war he had no chance of winning. Up until this point, I'd been the UN to his Iraq. Giving him Humanitarian Aid, supplying him with advice on how to unfuck his economy (Only for him to refuck ten minutes later) and even helping him in his wars. I ended up picking a fight I couldn't possibly win due to forgetting that this faction had a defensive pact with one of the Galactic superpowers. Told my friend, who was relatively new to the game as this was his second session ever, that if he joined the war we'd both be able to win. My ulterior motive, though, was literally just to use him as a distraction until I could sue for a white peace. He fell for it and, upon getting my peace, I revealed to him that he'd been played like a fiddle. Man I love that game. One Punch Man is the story of Satima, a hero who is a hero just for fun and the strongest man in his universe that can defeat any opponent with a single punch. Based on Yusuke Murata's manga remake of ONE's original webcomic. Saitama strived and became a superhero after experiencing the thrill of fighting an evil villain. Putting himself on a rigorous training regimen for three years, only to lose all of his hair and accidentally become the strongest human who ever walked the Earth. Now leaving him with a new problemďźhe doesnât get to experience the thrill of battle, as any encounter with Saitama ends with one punch. One Punch Man is quite different from other action anime, as rather than watch our protagonist struggle to become stronger, our hero has already reached his goals. The series takes this plot and shows us the emptiness that follows achieving a lifelong goal. Showing us the journey to one's goal is more fulfilling than actually reaching our goal. https://youtu.be/tMblzsXwAKo
22. Terra Fromer

Terra Formars is a show that is short, violent and an action anime that is simple to understand. Terra Formars, an anime about a bunch of genetically modified humans with characteristics of powerful organisms from earth, that get sent to Mars to find a cure to a lethal disease that is believed to have originated from Mars and exterminate a race of hyper-evolved humanoid cockroaches called Terra Formars that stand in their way. Terra Formars is an action sci-fi horror anime that deals with humanity fighting insects much like the film "Starship Troopers". Plot-wise it's not the best cause they try to add so much into it, but for action, it is pretty good. https://youtu.be/KVx9GrpN5lU

20. Darker than Black
Episodes 37 + OVA| Aired Spring 2007 | Produced by Bones

Darker than Black is definitely an anime that takes you on a journey with unique characters and an unusual style of story telling. Darker than Black takes place in a near-future world where two gates appeared, Heaven's Gate and Hell's Gate. The mysterious appearance of these gates brought with them the Contractors. Contractors are people who have entered into a contract with an unknown force in exchange for their humanity and gained a unique power in return. The nature of the contract, however, requires them to give back each time they use their power, which is anything from smoking a cigarette to writing a poem, eating etc. The story for most parts follows the infamous Contractor codenamed Hei. Called "Black Reaper" in the underground world. If you like shows about people with supernatural powers and action, I think you should definitely watch this series. It's a show that doesn't give too much away in the beginning but as the story progresses you can piece the whole plot together. The characters are also brilliantly done especially the contractors that are supposed to be void of human emotions. https://youtu.be/goYEIQT5m8U
19. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
Episodes 152 + OVA| Aired Fall 2012 | Produced by David Production Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is definitely an anime that takes you on an adventure. It's a series that just keeps getting better and better. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure follows the stories of a different generation of the JoJo family, whose members have unique powers that they use to fight supernatural enemies. I personally like the way the story follows a different member of the Joestar family? It's an anime that lives up to the hype that surrounds it. Though it's an anime that requires a bit of getting used to, it sometimes doesn't take itself seriously but when it does, it keeps you at the edge of your seat. https://youtu.be/EO08vMz73YY
18. Naruto/Naruto: Shippuden
Episodes 720 + OVA| Aired Fall 2002 | Produced by Studio Pierrot

Naruto/Naruto: Shippuden is one of the longest-running and most famous international shounen. That has a special place in most anime enthusiast. The story follows the many adventures and misadventures of Naruto, a knuckle-headed ninja with a loudmouth, and his ninja pals. A problem student, Naruto was never popular or talented, especially as a ninja. This all changes when he discovers the hidden power of the Nine-Tailed Fox sealed within him. Will he achieve his dream of becoming the leader of the Village? And can he protect his friends from the countless evils that threaten to destroy all he has? Naruto/Naruto: Shippuden is an anime with a lot of characters, and there is definitely one you will feel you can relate to and you will cheer on for as the story progresses. And this feels like where the anime shines the most the ability to make us feel for certain characters. And all the while it takes us on an adrenaline-filled journey. https://youtu.be/j2hiC9BmJlQ

Brought together by chance but stuck together by choice or blackmail?, out of a debt to pay to Fuu after saving them from being executed. They follow her on a wild adventure to different places in their search for the samurai that smells of sunflowers. It's a series that takes the usual "power of love and friendship" plot most animes takes and throws it out the window. Throwing a trio of mismatch characters together and forming an unlikely team, we will all be sad to see part ways at the end of their journey together. I'm still hoping for a second season. https://youtu.be/MV9sMJau674

Trying to fit into the ghoul community, while trying to hide his new identity in the human world. Tokyo Ghoul was quite enjoyable even though I felt there was room for more improvement. 2018 Film Retrospective
This is my retrospective of all the movies I saw in 2018. This is based on UK release dates so films such as The Favourite, Vice or Eighth Grade will not appear on this list despite technically being 2018 movies as I have not yet been able to see these yet. There are also many movies that I have missed in 2018.
I will still be updating this list throughout 2019 here: https://letterboxd.com/nathan_r_l/list/2018-from-best-to-worst-3/
If you want to see where these movies fall on this list as I see them.
So, anyway here from the worst of the year to my personal favourite are all the films I saw in 2018:
 37. The Queen and I (Dan Zeff):
I only saw this film a few days ago as of writing so it may seem a little harsh to call it the worst of the year as it hasnât had any time to grow on me yet. Although I donât see this getting any better with age. Sky intended this new David Walliamsâs TV movie as a sort of Christmas present, but this must be one of the very few films I have ever seen that has actually made me angry. Nothing more than royalist propaganda that manages to completely miss the potential of the concept as well as missing the point of the sequence from Les Miserable that it decides to âpay homage tooâ.
36. Death on the Tyne (Ed Bye):
Not much to say here. Really it isnât a surprise that UKTV made a bad comedy.
35. Fahrenheit 451 (Ramin Bahrani):
I promise that I saw more than just TV movies this year, it just so happens that most of them were really bad. All of the changes that were added to the story were stupid and when they actually tell the story it is painfully boring.
34. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (J. A. Bayona):
Letâs be real, despite ranging in quality none of the Jurassic Park sequels have warranted their own existence. That being said Fallen Kingdom might be worth watching just to see how hilariously bad these films can get. Despite having the same director as The Orphanage and A Monster Calls no amount of good tracking shots can fix a script that is this ridiculous. The script comes across like two different ideas for new Jurassic Park movies were awkwardly stitched together when the best treatment for both would have been not to make either of them. Through in an incredibly stupid and unneeded twist and the most underwhelming Jeff Goldblum cameo in cinema history.
33. Grandpaâs Great Escape (Elliot Hegarty):
Oh, look another bad TV movie. Davis Walliams consistently finds himself attached to these boring BBC productions never quite capture the heart and care of his writing. Walliams is a good childrenâs author, but the small screen adaptations of his work always feel rushed and unfocused.
32. Venom (Ruben Fleischer):
The biggest disappointment of 2018. Venom is corny, bland and forgettable. According to IMDB, Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer is behind this mess but judging by Tom Hardyâs performance and the incomprehensible CGI finale no-one directed this.
31. Solo: A Star Wars Story (Ron Howard):
A soulless, lifeless film that stinks of studio interference. All of the cast feel as if they are just playing the type of character they are expected to (especially Phoebe Waller-Bridge as L3-37). There are moments in this film where it feels like there is supposed to be a joke that has awkwardly been edited or written out after Lord and Miller left the project, these moments haunt the film and make me feel like this could have been great, but alas.Â
30. Death Wish (Eli Roth):
At this point it might be time to consider that Eli Roth might be making bad movies on purpose. I went into Death Wish expecting something needlessly graphic and entertainingly violent and stupid but thatâs not what this is. For the most part the gun violence in this film is pretty tame and the dialogue is far to generic and boring to be funny. There is one scene in a garage that showcases what usually makes Rothâs films memorable, but it comes too late to bring this movie into guilty pleasure territory. I do believe that Roth is a good filmmaker but the more he releases these mindless, generic thrillers the harder it is to defend him.
29. The Meg (Jon Turteltaub):
Half of this movie is a self-aware special effects movie that is genuinely entertaining. The other half is a boring and clichĂŠ. It should be good but never quite manages to keep up any momentum that it builds.
28. Tomb Raider (Roar Uthaug):
Technically better than the 2001 Lara Croft film although I know which one I would rather watch. Some interesting set pieces and homages to the newer tomb Raider games mixed with bland dialogue and an uninteresting plot.
27. Deadpool 2 (David Leitch):
Not as funny as the first movie but has better action. Deadpool 2 is mixed bag, the satire falls short when the movie insists on upping the stakes and having its audience feel emotionally connected to the story. David Leitch is a good action director and I look forward to seeing what he does next, but I canât say that Iâm all to exited about the next instalments in the Deadpool franchise.
26. Tag (Jeff Tomsic):
I donât think that this film deserves the hate it seems to have gotten. Tag is a pretty funny movie with memorable characters and good camera work. Itâs a little corny and the ending gets way to soppy but itâs a good film to watch with a group of friends if not just for some good Hannibal Buress quotes.
25. Click & Collect (Ben Palmer):
Hey, a TV movie that didnât suck! Airing on BBC 1 on Christmas Eve this is an example of cringe comedy done well, the plot doesnât always make sense but that doesnât stop the comedy from really working.
24. Outlaw King (David Mackenzie):
A pretty good historical drama about Robert the Bruce. Thatâs all this is really a serviceable movie about an interesting topic. Not bad by any means all though a little forgettable, the performances and fight choreography are great but the writing lacks any real direction.
23. Aquaman (James Wan):
A list of other movies scenes from Aquaman made me think of:
Ratatouille
Splash
Raiders of the Lost Arc
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
Black Panther
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace
Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring
Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
How to Train Your Dragon 2
Wonder Woman
Full review coming next
22. Ant-Man and the Wasp (Peyton Reed):
Not as funny or engaging as 2015âs Ant-Man. This is a decent blockbuster with some good special effects and funny moments. A lower tier Marvel film for sure that gets completely overshadowed by the other two movies that the studio brought out in 2018 but still a fun watch.
21. Oceanâs Eight (Gary Ross):
About as good as Oceanâs 13. All of the hallmarks of the Oceanâs trilogy are present. The last 15 minuets begin to over explain what we have already seen and the name of the movie spoils and reveal at the end of the movie. A well-directed heist movie none-the-less that should be enjoyable for any Oceanâs fan
20. Ready Player One (Steven Spielberg):
This movie is at its best when it is at its most Spielberg. There is a really great car chase and a plot that revolves around kids standing against authority. It goes on for way to long and some of the references are on the nose. It certainly needs to be cut down but itâs a movie worth seeing if you know your pop-culture.
19. Searching (Aneesh Chaganty):
By far the best example of found-footage to be released in years. Having the entire film appear from the perspective of computer screens and phone calls makes the experience feel far more real and personal as if you are right there figuring out the mystery with the character. The story itself separated from its gimmick has been seen before and the twist is a bit of a reach but with its unique style it feels completely fresh. If you hated Unfriended there is a high chance that you will love this.
18. My Dinner with HervĂŠ (Sacha Gervasi):
A HBO movie featuring a fantastic performance from Peter Dinklage. The life story of French actor HervĂŠ Villechaize is told through a crazy interview based on the one that the actor had with the director in the early 90âs. Itâs a small film but one that has been made with a lot of passion from its director and star. Absolutely look this one out if you can.
17. Isle of Dogs (Wes Anderson):
Wes Anderson is responsible for some of my favourite films of all time. While his latest may not be his best work to date it is a beautiful and insanely well-crafted film full of life and wonder. Anderson has a particular style and this movie sums up exactly what makes that style work so well with every shot working perfectly.
16. Black Mirror: Bandersnatch (David Slade):
Itâs hard to tell at this point whether or not this will start a new craze for choose your own adventure movies the way that Avatar started a craze for 3D. Honestly I donât think Charlie Brooker has left anywhere to really be explored with the this concept as he dives head first into a meta-narrative all about free-will. Certainly, an ambitious endeavour for the crew of Black Mirror that has taken over the cinematic discussion for a little while. I saw this with a group of friends trying to uncover as much of the story as we could in one sitting and I highly recommend that experience if you havenât seen/played this yet.
15. Black Panther (Ryan Coogler):Â
A Marvel movie that appears to have nudged its way into Oscar conversations, regardless of whether or not I think that it deserves that acclaim this is a great film. Black Panther has some of the smartest writing of any MCU movie and one of the best villains to ever appear in a superhero movie. This is a film that will be talked about for years because of what it means for representation, it also helps that it is a really good movie.
14. Game Night (John Francis, Jonathan M. Goldstein):
The biggest surprise of the year is that the two guys behind 2015âs awful Vacation reboot managed to make one of the funniest and well-made comedies of 2018. The camerawork in this film is brilliant, one long take in particular has to be one of my favourite scenes of the year. The plot takes some logical jumps but who cares when the film is this good.
13. A Quiet Place (John Kransinski):
Sure, it doesnât all make sense when you analyse it but watching A Quiet Place on the big screen is one of the tensest experiences I have ever had. When the credits rolled after the first time I saw this film I noticed that for the past 90 minuets, thatâs the sign of some effective tension.
12. First Man (Damien Chazelle):
Chazelle has proven himself to be one of the best directors working today. While I may not love his latest as much as his previous work on La La Land and Whiplash it has to be said that First Man is a solid base hit for a great filmmaker. The third act of this film features some of the best special effects of the year mixed with one of the most emotional sequences of the year. Gosling and Foy are both brilliant and both deserve nominations as does Chazelle.
11. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (Martin McDonagh):
Slightly twisted and very enjoyable Three Billboards is a strange film. McDonagh is able to find humour in the darkest of places but never undermines the serious nature of the subject matter.
10. Incredibles 2 (Brad Bird):
Going into the top 10 it feels important to restate that these rankings are based purely on my own personal opinions on each film. Incredibles 2 is objectively not as good as the 2004 original, but it doesnât have to be, this is a very fun movie featuring some great animation, fantastically directed action sequences that only Brad Bird could pull off and do I even have to mention the Jack-Jack scenes? Brad Bird is one of the greatest filmmakers to ever work in animation and this feels like his victory lap, not his best film but absolutely one that showcases just how great he is.
9. The Shape of Water (Guillermo del Toro):
Best picture winner, The Shape of Water deserves all the acclaim that it has gotten. This âadult fairy-taleâ features a wonderful score, fantastic performances, beautiful set-design and characteristically excellent direction from one of the worldâs greatest directors! Everyone has already lumped praise on this film and so I am not left with too much else to say other than see this film.
8. The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling (Judd Apatow):
I hear that 2018 was a great year for documentaries, I wouldn't know because I only saw this one but if Three Identical Strangers and Wonât you be my Neighbour are better than this then I need to see them. Judd Apatow looks into the life of his friend and fellow comedian Garry Shandling only 2 years after his tragic death. His approach leaves no stone unturned as he dives head first into the late comedianâs mind using his own diaries and interviews with his closest friends and collaborators. As a stand-up comedy fan it is absolutely fascinating to get a look the real life of an often misunderstood legend like Shandling for it to be as neatly put together and wonderfully entertaining as this is a welcome bonus.
7. Avengers: Infinity War (Joe Russo, Anthony Russo):
For the technical achievement alone Infinity War deserves a place in my top 10. The Russo brothers managed to pull off a stunt that just a year ago I was ready to call impossible, bringing together 10 years worth of character arcs and plot points while still making an enjoyable film. Even though it has been 9 months I still donât know what to say about this film and my lack of words may be the best compliment I can give it.
6. Mission: Impossible â Fallout (Christopher McQuarrie):
If you asked me in June I would have said that the Mission: Impossible franchise had peaked with Brad Birdâs Ghost Protocol in 2014, I also would have been dead wrong. Fallout is not just the best film in the franchise but an absolute high point in action cinema. Seeing this on the big screen was one of the most visceral and intense movie going experiences I have ever had, every stunt is a nail-biter and the whole time I was on the edge of my seat. Â
5. Thoroughbreds (Cory Finley):
This is the movie that I saw alone and have yet to properly have a conversation with someone about. This film slipped under almost everyoneâs radar and then disappeared. I am telling you now find this movie it is a fantastic, quaint little film with the power to make you uncomfortable and make you laugh at the same time. Olivia Cooke and Anya Taylor Joy are both brilliant and the ending has one of my best moments of the year with a single long shot and the power of suggestion. If you missed it, which you probably did, go look it out.Â
4. BlacKkKlansman (Spike Lee):
Loud, funny, unapologetic, stylish and controversial. Those are the five words that describe all of Spike Leeâs best movies and BlacKkKlansman is no exception. With multiple Oscar worthy performances, a great score and a screenplay that shows Spike at his angriest and smartest in a long time, this film will get under some peoples skin, as great cinema should.Â
3. I, Toyna (Craig Gillespie):
Every now and then a movie comes along that perfectly sums up why I love this art form, I Tonya is one of those movies. Deeply impactfull on an emotional level while remaining hyper stylised, Gillespie manages to make the audience feel sympathy for characters that would be the villains in any other story by taking you on an emotional roller coaster through the life of Tonya Harding that leaves the viewer feeling just as broken as the titular character by the conclusion.
This film is so good I watched it twice in two days.
2. Lady Bird (Greta Gerwig):
I fell hard for this film. Greta Gerwigâs painfully honest look at growing up feels like watching a selection of incredibly well shot home movies from a real person. The real achievement of Gerwigâs directorial debut is how it manages to feel relatable even if you arenât in the same situation as the protagonist. When the credits role itâs hard to feel slightly disappointed that you canât keep watching what is going to happen to this character next and when the only criticism you have is that you didn't want it to end, the film must have been pretty good.
1. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman):
Iâm just as surprised as you are.
Somehow and for whatever reason this is the movie that resonated with me the most in 2018, this is the film I see myself going back to the most. Sometimes the best film is the most entertaining one, this film had me hooked instantly and kept me in a near trance-like state during its run-time. In donât have anything to profound to say about this film itâs just really a great film that everyone can enjoy. If this is still playing near you and you havenât seen it yet, go check it out you wonât be disappointed.

K18 The Million Eyes of Sumuru
Like Fu Manchu, but with more sexism!

General notes
So, sorry it took me like four months to get this next entry out. School got busy faster than I expected. But last time it was almost a year and a half, so at least thereâs thatâŚanywayâŚ
The Million Eyes of Sumuru is a 1967 British spy film about a scary lady and her army of scary ladies. Itâs based on a book series by Sax Rohmer, a man whose name sounds like the title of a film-noir western about a jazz musician wandering in the desert. He also wrote the Fu Manchu books, which explains a lot. Also, it was directed by a guy named Lindsey. This movie includes some celebrities (sort of- does Frankie Avalon count as a celebrity?) and was produced by our other Castle of Fu Manchu friend, Harry Alan TOOOOOWEEEEERRRRRRRSSS. Wilfrid Hyde-White is in this, he played Colonel Pickering in the movie version of My Fair Lady. (I only mention that because I somehow didnât recognize him until most of the way into this movie, even though Iâve seen My Fair Lady several times.) It also stars George Nader, from the famous and hilariously terrible Robot Monster, which weâll get to watch later on in Season 1.
The main interesting note about this episode is that Tom Servo leaves partway through the movie. Again, itâs a case of Josh needing to be somewhere at the same time they were taping. Heâs still in the host segments, because they always taped those before the movie part. Now, letâs get to Sumuru. (I donât have a link for this one because itâs not on YouTube, but you can find it at Club MST3K.)
Prologue
I donât know if I ever mentioned that I like the little tentacle things in the KTMA doorway sequence.
Oh man, continuity! Thatâs unusual for this show in general, not even just KTMA. They did a âpreviously onâŚâ sketch as the intro for The Deadly Bees [905], but that one purposefully had nothing to do with anything that has ever happened on the S.O.L. They also did general premise recaps fairly often in Season 1 and occasional other times, and some story arc recaps in Season 8 when they were forced to have a story arc. This is the only episode I know of, thought, that has a classic âpreviouslyâ bit, separate from the rest of the host segment, that recaps with a clip from the previous episode. Neat.
Also, does anyone recognize the voice-over voice? Josh or Kevin are the usual deep-voice go-tos, but this doesnât sound like either of them. The musical sting comes from Fugitive Alien (I thought it was Time of the Apes at first, which goes to show how well I donât know my Season 3 episodes).
After the clip, we join the Mads trying to get a look at Joel floating outside the satellite. They confirm for us that he is not floating naked in space, but is actually wearing underwear (which we could kinda tell from that very accurate action-figure Joel model). I had to look up what âBVDsâ were, though. I had to look at this so now you do, too:
Whatever camera theyâre using to look at Joel must have really good zoom if they can tell his cheeks are blue.
Has he been out there for a whole week? Thatâs impressive. Much later, in Time Chasers [821], the S.O.L. seemed to maybe have a Tardis-like air bubble-forcefield thing around it when it docked with Pearlâs van, so maybe thatâs how Joel managed. Of course, a week in the cold of space with no food or water doesnât really leave him very well off even if he had air, but those are all science facts. More likely this episode and the last one just take place closer together that that. (My default headcanon assumption is most episodes take place roughly in real time with when they aired, but thereâs exceptions to that for sure). But again, Iâm more than willing to relax about this kind of thing. I just speculate for fun.
The Mads are 2001-loving dorks, and we love them for it. As characters. As people, theyâre jerks.
I think this may the first occurrence of weirdly affectionate Dr. F nicknames for Joel. Weâve had a few weird insults in previous episodes, but I think this is the first of this particular kind.
I didnât know the Mads could open the S.O.L. doors from down on Earth. But I guess they control all sorts of other things from their lab, so why not the doors? Larry doesnât actually press any buttons, but Joel gets inside anyway. Maybe he pressed it under the desk.
Joel is putting on his jumpsuit as he comes onto the bridge. The bots must have left it right by the door. Why did Joel take it off to go outside in the first place? Was he in the middle of changing and got sucked out the door? Actually, a random semi-nude spacewalk doesnât seem too far outside something Joel might do on purposeâŚ
Joel also thanks the Mads for letting him inside. Itâs good to be polite to your captors, I suppose. In some episodes, rudeness does result in punishment, so probably a smart idea.
Locked you out again? How many times has this happened, Joel? Maybe you need to get another key. Although if heâs going out into space in only his underwear, he might not have a good place to keep itâŚthis is getting weird, letâs move on.
Traceâs weird expressions in this segment keep making me laugh.
The Mads are really enjoying taunting Joel this week. I like their doofy handshake. I can imagine them doing that in the halls at Gizmonic and other mad scientists just looking at them like they canât stand them.
Joelâs response is actually much more sarcastic than usual for him (outside the theater). 3-12 weeks? Whatâs he talking about there? Anyone know? Did KTMA have multiple seasons?
Poor guy, he sounds really done. Being stuck out in the vacuum of space for a while probably does that to you.
The Madsâ movie intros are starting to sound more like they will for the rest of the series. Also, Larry tells Clay to get the movie, and he does. I sometimes forget that Dr. F and Dr. Erhardt were portrayed mostly as equals during KTMA. The junior doctor/henchman thing didnât really get going until Season 1.
I never know what to make of angry Joel. It happened more often in KTMA, but still not that much. Also, his hand gestures are weird.
We didnât see the bots in this segment, probably because theyâre off hiding from Joel and their impending punishment.
Movie pt. 1
Wow, the Mads were right; this is a really washed-out print.
Joel comes into the theater dancing to the parade music from the movie. He seems to have forgotten about being angry. Maybe the bots got an earful on the way down.
4:32, time and temp: 6:04 and 67°. The episode originally aired in early May, so Iâd assume this is sometime around then, if not the exact night. I donât know if TV23 re-ran these or not.
Crow mispronounces âemperorâ at 4:39, and corrects himself, which makes Joel chuckle.
At 4:43, Tom tries to apologize for locking Joel outside, saying they âdidnât really know it was [him].â Joel understandably doesnât respond.
During the opening credits, they do a lot of ârelative of famous person with same last nameâ jokes. Those became a staple during credits for the rest of the show, especially the Joel seasons.
Servo doesnât know who the Buddha is at 7:27. Also, Joelâs Wisconsin accent really comes out when he says âBuddha.â
At 7:46, Joel starts a riff that just sort of peters out. Something about the plant in front of the camera, but Iâm not sure what he was trying to say.
8:13, Joel makes a pun and asks Crow if he likes it. Crow doesnât seem overly enthused, but he says it was cool, anyway. Tom then tells him should laugh at it, since Joelâs upset with them. He hasnât been acting too upset since they got into the theater, but maybe heâs been glowering or something.
Crow and Joel both talk at the same time at 8:31. Theyâre usually pretty good at not doing that, considering itâs improv.
At 8:35, Joel says âwhoopsâ and looks down. It looks like he was just moving out of the way of the movie, but maybe he hit Crowâs arm or something.
Movie thing: I know itâs not even 10 minutes in yet, but the editing in this is really bad.
At 11:52, Joel tells Crow a terrible joke, which he kinda laughs at, but it seems to make him a little bit sad. Joel laughs, though.
Servoâs Frankie Avalon joke at 12:27- does that come from somewhere or did Josh just make that up on the fly? Itâs very clever. Josh always has been the best of the MST alumni at off-the-cuff quips. Crow and Joel groan, though.
At 13:01, Iâm not sure what Joelâs laughing at.
Joel bats at the old man at 13:16.
Movie thing: Gosh, 60s white-people dancing is always so second-hand embarrassing. Also, along with being washed out, the sound is really bad in this, too. Iâm having a hard time understanding what anyone is saying.
I appreciate their Batman riffs at 15:43.
At 16:36, Tom makes fun of Frankie Avalon for being in the movie, but since Frankieâs hugging a pretty lady on screen at the time, Crow disagrees with his assessment. His enthusiastic follow-up about Frankieâs hand placement makes me laugh, along with Joel.
Josh calls commercial at 17:22, while making fun of Colonel Medikaâs line delivery.
The guys are talking over each other a lot this week. I guess theyâre just full of riff ideas.
Joelâs delivery at 17:45 is kind of adorable, for some reason.
All their riffs about the van starting at 18:26 are really funny, but what was that, Joel? Freeze him and make him into little bongs? Bombs? Huh?
Iâm sorry, but WHAT IS HAPPENING?!
You canât really see it because the quality is so bad, but at 19:27, Joel and the bots lean along with the car-chase cam.
Terrible pun from Joel at 20:20ish.
Some more of the Crow attitude we know and love at 22:20.
At 22:29, Servo complains to Joel about hearing voices in his head. Joel sounds a little concerned, but then Tom drops it.
Joel starts poking at Frankieâs giant chin at 22:57.
Crow just canât let the poor framing in this scene go.
Tomâs confused about the number of Sumuruâs eyes at 26:10.
Joel gives the naked woman two thumbs up at 26:52, then stands up to look down at her chest! Unexpected from him. Things are getting awfully blue in hereâŚ
Crow starts a game of tag with Joel as they leave the theater, which is cute. Joel takes a huge obvious step over Trace on the floor, and mumbles something. I canât tell whether he says something to Trace, or say something about âchaseâ. Either would make sense in context.
Host Segment 1
We go right into the host segment, skipping the doorway sequence. Itâs hard to tell with these VHS recordings whether thatâs how the episode was made, or if the person just cut it out. It does look like a little bit from the beginning of this segment is cut off.
Joel is still mad about being locked out of the ship, so heâs attached âidioprobesâ to the bots. They look like strings, and apparently administer pain while attached. That seems a little harsh to me, but Iâve also never been stuck out in space in my underwear, either. I like the way Crow sidles sideways into frame.
When Joel rips the idioprobes off the bots, you can clearly see the string on Servo, but he just pretends to grab something off of Crow. They didnât have any extra string for a prop?
After Joel removes them, Servo starts trying to give the âwe didnât know it was youâ excuse again, saying they thought it was any of several dead musicians. (All the people in the list are drummers, except for Elvis.)
Joelâs not having it, and threatens the probes again. Iâm not really sure why theyâre called probes; theyâre not really probing anything.
Tom demands a trial by his peers, and Joel says that heâd build them more peers if he could. Interesting- does that mean heâs used up all useful robot building parts on the ship already? That would explain why he stopped at four, besides the fact that four is more than enough to deal with.
Then Joel asks where Gypsy is, and the other two hem and haw and finally admit they left her stuck in the spiral-on-down, which I think is the way to the theater? I know theyâve used the term before, but infrequently. Anyway, Joelâs not happy about that, either. Servoâs defense is pretty reasonable, since his arms donât work. Crowâs in trouble, though.
Apparently you can unstick Gypsy from the spiral-on-down by pressing a button on the little control panel thing. I wonder if that unsticks her from anywhere in the satellite, or if itâs just for that one spot. Crow calls it a robo-purge button, which kind of makes it sound like the former.
I love Gypsyâs screech when she gets released.
Joel seems so done with the bots and everything by the end of this segment. He canât do anything but smile and (metaphorically) wave. The cheesy grin isnât usually his style; thatâs more of a Mike thing.
Movie pt. 2
Still 67° at 6:38 (am or pm).
Joel sings a little Sumuru song at 35:48. Iâm not sure if the tune comes from somewhere or if he was just making it up on the spot. Anyone recognize it?
At 36:20, Joel and the bots mess with the car dashboard.
37:33- Tom makes another off-color joke. I have a feeling more are on the way, given the content of the movie.
At 44: 20, Servo brings up the slant-6 Swinger car again, the one they mentioned in a few previous episodes.
He also calls commercial at 44:45.
Joelâs sounding extra sleepy in a lot of his lines.
Ah good, itâs time for the movie to dial up the sexism again.
By 51:11, Crowâs lost patience with the kissing scene.
At 52:04, Tom tells Joel he needs to leave, because he needs to go bake brownies for the Pinewood Derby. The real-life reason was mentioned at the top, but Iâm thinking in-universe, Servo was just tired of watching this movie. Joelâs fine with him leaving, as long as he agrees to show up for the sketches between the movies segments. Tom promises, and wonders if they have eggs. Just a pointless thought, since it doesnât matter how they eat (or breathe), but I always assumed either the Mads send them supply shipments, or they have some kind of food synthesizer that makes it for them. They definitely have the latter by the end of the series, since Crow mentions it in Soultaker [1001], but earlier than that, itâs not clear. Maybe both?
Host Segment 2
Joel tries to hold a trial for the bots, but, as usual, everything is a joke to them. They just wonât go along with anything heâs trying to do. The courtroom thing reminds me of Crowâs trial for cheating in Wild World of Batwoman [515].
The bots go off on another word-association tangent, which leads to a game show sketch, while Joel just looks on impatiently.
He uses the button panel as a gavel.
Even Gypsy gets in on making life difficult for Joel. It looks like maybe Josh was throwing his voice to do Gypsy from the other side of the desk. Either that or they recorded that part in post. Either way, Trace or somebody else must have been operating her.
Time and temp comes up on the host segment this time; Still 67° at 7:07. The updates are more frequent this week than last time.
Joel gives up on getting order in the court, and picks up Tom and kisses his head while misquoting Jimi Hendrix. What else can you do but give into the madness?
What is that on the desk besides the papers? It looks like an upside-down mug, maybe?
I like the weird noise Crow makes when Joel calls Movie Sign.
Movie pt. 3
As Servo mentioned, he doesnât go back into the theater with the others. Joel was holding him as they ended the last segment, so I guess he must have put him down somewhere on the way to the theater.
Joel and Crow try to move away from the spraying champagne at 55:10.
I agree with Crow at 56:27, please stop.
Man, Crow keeps saying what Iâm thinking.
At 59:45, Crow calls back to the oceanic opening credits from the Gamera films.
Oh goodness, again with the Brain That Wouldnât Die-style KPORN saxophoneâŚalso, so does security want to like, check her bag or anything before she goes in to the president? No? Yeah, see, thatâs exactly why security exists.
Wait, he did get shot? Huh? It would be nice if they would SHOW us whatâs happening! And this is the most ineffectual political security ever.
Host Segment 3
As promised, Tom is back for the host segment.
I love Crowâs flowers on his net.
Joel was out in space for five weeks? I guess it was longer between episodes than I thought. Thatâs what I get for not checking first.
It amuses me that the bots are just now asking about this, even though they obviously thought about before, since Servo did calculations. But Joelâs got a guitar and heâs ignoring their questions, sort of like how they ignored him earlier when he was trying to put them on trial.
Time and temperature again, 7:28 and down to 65°.
Joel and the bots sing us a lovely part of the theme song to remind us to just relax about the eating and breathing thing. Iâm guessing they anticipated people calling/writing in with questions about how Joel survived. As much as this episode guide exists to overthink things, that kind of science fact I am quite relaxed about, and I donât mind being reminded.
I wonder whose guitar that is. It might be Joshâs, since I know he has musical inclinations. It doesnât look the same as the guitar Larry has during the Clay and Larâs Flesh Barn song in Women of the Prehistoric Planet [104], but that doesnât mean itâs not still his. Also, do you think Joelâs really playing the guitar here? It sure looks like he is, but Iâve heard him say in interviews that he doesnât play the guitar. Maybe he just meant he doesnât anymore, or very much.
I think Crow is just moving his mouth, not actually singing. Nice harmonies from Tom, though.
Movie pt. 4
Haha, sheâs running to her inevitable death, itâs funny! These highly-trained assassins sure jog at a casual pace, donât they? I guess theyâre probably in heels.
At 1:08:21, Joel mentions that he likes a movie with lots of midriff. This one ought to make him happy, then, no midriff shortage here.
Classic âoh wowâ from Joel at 1:12:28, and another at 1:12:39. I donât know if Iâm going to note all of them. Maybe I should, and then someday someone can make a pointless compilation video or something.
Wizard of Oz reference #16 at 1:12:46. Maybe someday someone can make a pointless compilation of these, too.
Crow makes Joel laugh at 1:12:53.
The guys have no patience for Frankieâs fourth-wall-breaking joke at 1:13:01.
Wow, what a pointlessly prolonged scene leading up to nothing. They did in two minutes what they could have done in 30 seconds. Thatâs padding Roger Corman could be proud of. Â
Also, that cut. This movie canât decide if it wants to be a comedy or not. Not that itâs succeeding at comedy, but sometimes itâs sure trying.
âI know itâs bestâ because Iâm a man, albeit a wimpy, useless one. Man, just like City on Fire, this movie annoys me so much I canât leave it alone, even though thatâs not what this guide is for. (I also think itâs easy to start filling in riffs yourself in KTMA, when itâs slow.)
I just noticed Joelâs leaned way back in his chair.
He calls commercial at 1:21:07.
Sumuruâs mines are operated by switches? That seems far less effective than normal minesâŚ
Joel keeps talking about midriffs. I guess he really is a fan.Â
Iâm sorry I keep talking about movie things, but why the heck is Frankie here? Isnât his character just some rich playboy with no actual skills? Did I miss some line near the beginning that explained his extensive military training? I really might have, the sound was terrible.
Joelâs riff attempt at 1:32:26- he pauses to get his sentence in order, then still says âfoomsâ instead of âfilmsâ. I find that way funnier than I should.
Is Joel okay? Heâs having a really hard time getting over Trace on the way out, again. Maybe theyâre squished closer to the wall than usual?
Conclusion
Apparently Servoâs mouth is broken now, so Joel moves it for him and makes him sing.
Joel mentions theyâve got 900 people in the fan club. Thatâs extremely impressive for a dinky little puppet show on local UHF. Seems like people could tell from the beginning that MST3K was destined for greatness.
The fan club newsletter is called The Binding Polymer? I wonder why. Just science-y sounding, I guess.
Why does Joel need to move Servoâs mouth to talk when heâs not even onscreen? Maybe he canât talk at all if his mouth doesnât move. That seems like an odd design choice for a robot, but then again, so do most aspects of the bots. Speaking of Tomâs mouth, is KTMA Tomâs mouth the same as regular Tomâs mouth, but upside down? Iâm probably just crazy.
Crow seems shocked by Joelâs sudden button press.
As he often does, Joel looks offscreen before the camera cuts away. He really does seem tired this week, doesnât he? Hope he went home after this and slept.
Kevinâs listed under âPuppet Operationâ in the credits. Maybe that means he was running Gypsy in the second host segment.
Thoughts on the Movie
Wow. You know, after reading a little bit about it, I had hopes that The Million Eyes of Sumuru would be a little bit higher quality than the past few movies weâve seen. In some ways, thatâs true.
But overall, I have to sayâŚWHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS MOVIE?! I have so many questions: Why canât George Nader and Frankie Avalon stop being smug and sardonic and cutesy for three and a half seconds? Why did they frame shots so half the time you canât tell whatâs going on? And President Boong? First of all, Boong, really? Second of all, Sinonesia? What? Third of all, he is clearly a white guy in eyeliner and all of this is supposed to be remotely acceptable to the audience!? I mean, Fu Manchu was racist, too, but at least they made some attempt to suspend audience disbelief.
And the really big one: how do you think they fit this much misogyny into one film? Remember, even if a woman hates men and has dedicated her whole life to destroying them, she still becomes instantly smitten if touched by a man, no matter how unattractive. Also, even if she is a trained martial-artist-assassin, she will not make any attempt to stop said man from touching her, because she is a woman. Yes, women exist solely as sexual creatures who could never desire anything more than to be dominated by men, no matter what they may try to convince themselves otherwise. In fact, every human being is motivated only by sex at all times! And was that significant glance between Helga and the other chick at the end there supposed to redeem anything? Sax Rohmer, Harry Towers, Kevin Kavanagh (screenwriter on this fine, fine film)- yâall have issues.
This movie has plenty of other stupidity which Iâm not going to bother to get into. I think Iâve expressed my feelings adequately. Itâs not unwatchable in the way Castle of Fu Manchu is, but itâs plenty more offensive. Letâs just move on with our lives.
Review
This one was okay. As I said before, Josh thrives the most on the improv riffing, and the second part really starts to drag once he leaves. I still laughed out loud at several riffs, (favorite riff- Crow: Does she always make that noise when she walks?) but thereâs a lot of dead space in between. Compared to the past few episodes, it definitely has less energy, which also makes it easier to get caught up in the badness of the movie.
Overall, had good parts, wouldnât put it in my KTMA top five, by any means. Still, with every episode the guys seem to figuring out more and more the feeling they want in the movie and host segments. You can see it moving towards its destination.

Transcript Ep5 0:1:50 Character Backstories
All of this transcription was done by Critical Role Transcripts. I've merely reformatted it from closed captions to paragraphs, and added the timestamps and links. The longer Critical Role has run, and characters have developed, the clearer it is that the telling of their backstories shows some very core personality traits, beyond the mere history they tell. I hope this serves as a useful reference document for further analysis. Note: Pike's video wasn't introduced until Ep5, making it the first episode to have all of them.
If you like this transcript, especially this transcript, please consider donating to Critical Role Transcripts, @CRTranscript, to help them provide closed captioning to Critical Role. We'd like to share this wonderful show with as many people as possible, regardless of hearing ability or English language skills.

 1. Pike
0:1:50 Ashley: "Pike grew up in the outskirts of town, near the Bramblewood. Her ancestors were a family of deep gnomes with quite an unfavorable reputation. Thievery, destruction, and trickery left them with the curse of the last name Trickfoot. Sarenrae, the goddess of healing and redemption, had other plans for Pike's great-great-grandfather, Wilhand, who left his family at a young age after a dream; a dream that changed the course of the Trickfoot family. Wilhand devoted his life to Sarenrae and pledged from then on that him and his family would live a life of service and devotion.
0:02:27 Ashley: "As a child, Pike seemed to have an affinity to heal. Whether it was animals, people, or even flowers, she felt she had a purpose in making things whole that had once been broken. She studied and learned the ways to heal though divine magic.
0:02:43 Ashley: "She lived a peaceful life, quiet and simple, until one day, Wilhand was captured, and almost killed, by a group of goliath barbarians. One of the goliaths took a stand against the murder of the innocent gnome, and he himself was beaten, bloodied, and left for dead, abandoned by his herd. Wilhand went to Pike for help. She prayed and healed this barbarian as best she could, bringing him back to life. When he awoke, she discovered his name was Grog Strongjaw. After that, they were best of friends, a rather unlikely pair. Little did she know that in a few years' time, Grog would soon return the favor and bring her back from the clutches of death.
0:03:31 Ashley: "After being killed in battle, Pike felt angry. She wanted to be stronger so that it would never happen again. She spent four months at sea training with the men and women aboard a ship called the Broken Howl. Gripping her holy symbol in one hand, and her morningstar in the other, this time, Pike is ready."

0:03:53 Travis: "Right, Listen up! If you have ale, then you have a friend in Grog Strongjaw! A goliath of towering height and size, this barbarian has an appetite for the two great loves in his life: combat, women, and ale!" Chuckle, "Wait. Easily the brains of the group, Grog is often consulted for his vast knowledge of shapes, colors, and," chuckle, "shiny things! ...Also, ale.
0:04:27 Travis: "In his early years, armed with his two-handed great axe, Grog often enjoyed proving his might amongst the ranks of his family's wandering herd. But after coming upon an unsuspecting elderly gnome in the woods, he objected to the killing such an innocent life. A creature of impulse, Grog felt only pity for this... well, this terrified little thing, and his disobedience cost him dearly. Beaten bloody, and banished by the herd leader, his uncle Kevdak, Grog was abandoned and left to die.
0:05:05 Travis: "Exiled from his herd, it was then that the relative of the very gnome he fought to save, saved him. It was the kindness of a gnome cleric named Pike, that healed Grog, bringing him back from death's edge. And they have remained close friends ever since.
0:5:26 Travis: "Most nights, Grog can be found challenging entire taverns to wrestling matches! Ha! ...or accompanying Scanlan to the nearest house, where you pay for... lady favors. Also, ale!"
0:05:40
 3. Keyleth
0:05:41 Marisha: "A first Impression of Keyleth would leave you with little information on the half-elven druid. You might even think that her social awkwardness due to her sheltered upbringing is kind of sweet." Chuckle, "Of course, it would be unwise underestimate her based on first impressions. Under that unintimidating, petite frame is a vicious beast waiting to be unleashed, whose natural powers have made even the fiercest of champions pee their pants, literally!" Soft chuckle.
0:06:10 Marisha: "Born to the Air Tribe of the Ashari people, Keyleth was raised with a deep love of nature and the elemental magics. It is her peopleâs inherent duty to protect the delicate areas in Tal'Dorei where the four elemental planes begin to bleed with this realm. Since she was a little girl, she had quite a knack for air manipulation and beast shaping abilities. Well, if you consider Kittens and flying squirrels to be little beasts. Which, I do, "clears throat.
0:06:39 Marisha: "Anyways, it wasn't long before the headmaster of the tribe, her father, Kohren, realized her true prodigious abilities and she was inveterated to succeed him as the next headmaster. Just like that, her jovial childhood was stripped and replaced with endless spell memorization, teachings from ancient traditions, and exceedingly high expectations.
0:07:00 Marisha: "Every druid leader-to-be must embark on journey to seek out the sister tribes, in order to introduce and establish respect amongst the fellow headmasters. They call this the Aramente, or Noble Odyssey. When her father felt she was ready, he set her on the path to truly discovering herself. Not knowing when, or if she will ever return. As she hiked down the mountain towards Stillben, she meditated on the task ahead. Part of the Aramente is proving yourself a strong warrior, a valiant protector, and a wise and compassionate leader. With this knowledge, one thought plays in repeat in her mind: Is she even worthy?"
0:07:43
 4. Percy
0:07:45 Taliesin: "Percy was the third child of 7 children, born to a noble family who lived far to the north in the ancient castle of Whitestone. With so many siblings to share the burdens of lordship, Percy turned his attentions to the sciences, engineering, and naturalism.
0:08:01 Taliesin: "One day, a mysterious couple, named Lord and Lady Briarwood, came to court. During a feast held in their honour, the Briarwoods violently took control of the castle, killing or imprisoning everyone who would stand in their way. Percy awoke chained in the dungeon, only to be freed by his younger sister. Together they fled, chased by the Briarwoodsâ men. As they ran, Percyâs sister took several arrows to the chest and fell. Percy kept running, eventually jumping into a freezing river and floating unconscious to freedom.
0:08:34 Taliesin: "He did not remember waking up on a fishing boat. He barely remembered the next two years, as he slowly made his way as far south as possible. Then one night, Percy had a dream. A roaring cloud of smoke offered him vengeance against those who destroyed his family. When he awoke, Percy began to design his first gun."
0:08:58
 5. Scanlan
0:08:59 Sam: "Oh, you havenât heard of Scanlan Shorthalt? Well, gird your loins, ladies, because he has his eye on you. A talented musician, master of disguise, and dashingly handsome in his own mind, Scanlan sings songs almost as much as he sings his own praises.
0:09:15 Sam: "Born a poor Gnome, Scanlan used his endless charm and soaring tenor voice to croon for coin and support his single mother. One day he was discovered by a half-orc promoter, and joined Dr. Dranzelâs Spectacular Traveling Troupe where he learned the ways of the world, and honed his skills as a bard extraordinaire.
0:09:35 Sam: "A loner much of his life, Scanlan has never quite come to terms with the violent death of his mother at the hands of a Goblin invasion. While his years on the road provided many, shall we say, educational experiences with the opposite sex, deep down Scanlan yearns for the one thing heâs never known: the true love of a fellow Gnome.
0:09:57 Sam: " Still, Scanlan considers himself a lover first, performer second, and fighter distant third. On the battlefield, heâll support his allies, but rarely draws blood unless itâs to protect fellow Gnome, Pike. Count on Scanlan for a hearty laugh, a rollicking song, and a twinkle in his eye that melts hearts and makes the females swoon.
0:10:20
 6. Tiberius
0:10:20 Orion: "Greetings and salutations. I am Tiberius Stormwind. I hail from a town called Ty'rex, located in the heart of Draconia, born from a politically respected family. At the age of 15, I succeeded in passing the Sorcererâs Rite, showing prodigy-like control of my magic. The judges and the Draconian high council were amazed at how powerful my spells were for how long I had been training. At 20 years-old, I was the youngest appointed member of the magic guild in Draconian history.
0:10:49 Orion: "For the next few years, I almost went mad from the malaise of being a guild member, as itâs rather boring. However, one day I happened upon a chamber, unused for quite some time. In the room were stacks of books and maps of the surrounding cities and areas around the known world. For months, I would frequent the chamber, and learned of artifacts from legend. After a long period of research, I made a list of artifacts that caught my eye. I brought these findings to the high council and was told that all of the information in the chamber I had stumbled upon was either believed to be fiction or unsolvable mysteries, and hence were lost forever. I found those answers to be unacceptable.
0:11:28 Orion: "A year later I devised a ruse and managed to convince the city council to lend support in me leaving Draconia on a mission of peace and diplomacy for the surrounding kingdoms. Going from town to town and making friends and allies, in and for the name of Draconia. Being a red dragonborn, I had quite the task on my hands in that respect, but it was exactly what I needed so I could explore the world and find these artifacts, as I felt the truth was out there.
0:11:54 Orion: "Some may describe me as buffoonish, but I say poppycock to all that. I am much sharper than most give me credit for. I just donât pay attention to things sometimes. Iâve also been known to be rather cunning, loyal, happy-go-lucky, and well, dangerous. I canât help but show my true scales every now and then. But overall, I think Iâm quite friendly for a Dragonborn."
0:12:18
 7. Vax
0:12:20 Liam: "Never entirely welcome in the company of elves or men, Vax'ildan learned at a young age to skip past formality, preferring instead to invite himself in your door. Along with twin sister Vex'ahlia, Vax was born by a chance encounter between elven royalty and human peasantry. Raised by their mother in their early years, the twins were eventually sent off to their father in the Elven capital of Singorn. But their cool reception among the Elves there never warmed, and their time in the capital didnât last.
0:12:50 Liam: "The siblings stole away one autumn night and set out on the open road. After a few years of wandering, they eventually decided to return to their mother, and journeyed back to the lands of their youth. But instead of finding their childhood home, they returned to a pile of rubble. Their mother was gone, their home burned to ash. Pressing the townspeople for answers, they learned of the day the dragon came. With their ties all severed, Vax'ildan and his sister set out to find their fortune together in Tal'Dorei.
0:13:28 Liam: "An outsider since birth, Vax quickly learned to solve lifeâs challenges in his own particular way, often by sidestepping them entirely. And when his knack for circumventing adversity isnât enough, the way of blades the elves schooled him in more than makes up the difference."
0:13:48
 8. Vex
0:13:49 Laura: "Like so many Half-Elves, Vex'ahlia has spent most of her life suffering the cool reception of a people who donât fully accept her. Born of a human mother, and an elven father who only later in life took an interest in their existence, Vex'ahlia and her twin brother Vax'ildan quickly realized the only people they could truly rely on in this world were each other.
0:14:14 Laura: "It was at the age of 10 when the two were taken from their mother, and brought to live in Singorn, the isolated Elven city for which their father was an ambassador. He quietly took them in, but always kept an icy distance, and after too many years of disdainful looks, the pair decided to leave his indifference behind, and set out on their own.
0:14:36 Laura: "Vax took to the cities, stealing small trinkets and learning the ways of the thief, while Vex kept to the woods. She preferred the isolation. Always the keen observer, she learned to hunt and to track, to spy and to shoot. And through a series of fateful events, earned herself a companion in the form of a bear - her own stolen Trinket - to fight alongside her and protect her fiercely. Also, he is adorable, and gives expert massages.

The 2017 Hot List: InStyle's Annual Rising Stars Portfolio Of The Names You Need To Know
Bill Milner
Age: 21
Originally from⌠Surrey, UK
Youâll recognise him⌠as that kid in the hilarious Son of Rambow (Bill was only 12 when he landed the role) Heâs since gone onto to star in X-Men: First Class and Anthropoid plus this month makes his Netflix debut alongside Maisie Williams in iBoy, the streaming serviceâs first movie based on Kevin Brooksâs 2010 young adult novel, about a teenager who gains iPhone -related superpowers.
Can you remember what the first VHS or DVD you bought?
When I was 13 or 14 years old I started watching films properly. My friend and I were obsessed with Christopher Nolanâs Batman. That one of the first times I realised films could have a deeper kind of story and started to notice the difference between huge blockbusters and Indie.
Do you think Netflix is starting a whole new genre?
Yeah, the consumer is so different now. Itâs given us a great opportunity for long-form storytelling. People kind of think itâs âbingingâ if you watch three episodes on television but really thatâs like 2-3 hours, thatâs a film! And if you do that a few nights in a row youâve watched like 9 hours of a story and you are really following the characters. I would rather prefer an opportunity to do a series to really get in deep with the character. Thatâs more exciting!
What was it like making iBoy?
I was surprised how much more creative control Netflix give. They were quite happy for us to do what we wanted with regards to how far we took the language and how dark we wanted it to be.
Do you think youâre going to recognized a lot more because of its reach?
Hmmm maybe. Itâs exciting that itâs always going to be online. Like in ten years time people could still be stumbling across it.
What word do you always overuse?
Well I know that in interviews a lot of actors use word âexcitingâ which Iâm guilty of too. Like âIâm excited to work with themâ and âthis is a really exciting project!â Everything is always âexciting.â
What was the last lie you told?
Iâm much of a liar really. If I have to lieâŚhmmm I actually just avoid it. Like if someone says: âOh are you free this week?â and I just donât want to see them I just donât text them back. Itâs avoiding but also Iâm being honest.
Tell us your signature cocktail?
Whiskey sours. I made them last night. My top tip? Donât use pre-squeezed lemon juice, you have to squeeze the lemons yourself. I know itâs long but it make a big difference.
Your top three most used emojis?
That laughy-cry one. A heart. And the nail paint, for when you want to just snap someone out.
Pearl Mackie
Age: 29
Originally from⌠London
Youâll recognize her from⌠West End hit The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and BBCâs daytime soap Doctors. But youâre going to be seeing way more of her in 2017 when she makes her Doctor Who debut as Peter Capaldiâs companion.
Was acting always the career plan?
Always! Apparently when I was five my mum was washing my hair on a Sunday night before school in front of Saint Louis. Judy Garland was singing the trolley song and I turned to my mum and said I want to do that.
Where were you when you got the Doctor Who call to say youâd got it?
At home with my housemate. The whole process was mad. At the recall I read with Peter and it was all really hush hush, the whole process was like being in M15. Then my agent called me to tell me I got it. There were tears. I had to call her back and say âlook Iâve imagined that moment a lot so please can you tell me it did actually happen!â
Have you met any fans yet?
Theyâre incredible. I went to Comic Con in New York and there was a girl dressed exactly like me. The trailer I appear in is only two minutes long but she had really nailed it.
Has anyone given you any good advice?
On my first day of filming Jenna Coleman sent me a bunch of flowers with a note saying that I didnât need any advice but if she was to tell me anything it would be something that Karen has passed onto her. And that was to tell me not to eat the faggots in the canteen. They had them on the menu the other day and I was like no way!
How do you feel about Peter leaving?
Iâm so sad but Iâm just happy I got to work with him. Heâs such a generous actor. Iâm very new to camera acting and all the technical stuff and he will always check if Iâm ok. We really get into the scenes and heâs very open to my opinions.
Your go-to karaoke song?
Journeyâs Don't Stop Believing. Thatâs embarrassing.
Word or phrase you overuse?
Literally. I literally use it all the time.
Trait you value most in your friends?
Honesty. Even if I look like shit Iâd rather youâd tell me.
Monday motivation?
I love those quotes on Instagram. Mine would be âThis too shall pass.â Itâs not always going to be Monday. Just get up and go.
Go to cocktail?
Iâm a classic gin and tonic gal. I love a Hendricks with a slice of cucumber.
Blake Harrison
Age: 21
Originally from⌠London
Youâll recognise him from⌠The Inbetweeners, where Blake played the hilarious dopey Neil for seven years and last year starred alongside Catherine Zeta Jones and Bill Nighy in the cinematic remake of Dadâs Army. Next up heâs swapping comedy for drama taking on roles in ITVâs Prime Suspect prequel Tennison and BBC thriller Trust Me.
Do you still get lots of people stopping you in the street and asking you to do Neil impressions from the Inbetweeners?
Thereâs a lot. But you know, thatâs just the test of the time. I canât knock it, itâs just is what it is.
Was it hard to avoid being typecast?
Some people are so into the show that they are quite disappointed when they realize youâre not quite that character. But I feel quite lucky with my next roles. In Tennison I play a hot-tempered police officer in the 70s. And in Trust Me I play a recovering alcoholic. Thatâs really the fun of acting, playing a variety of roles with different types of people.
And now youâre venturing into directing too?
My lovely wife wrote a play and I thought Iâd love to make it into a short film. Directing was always something I had in mind but Iâm just starting and quickly learning that there is a lot more to it than I originally thought. The note sessions with my wife are interesting too!!
Whatâs your signature cocktail?
We had Christmas party last year and I made eggnog for the first time and it was delicious. I just followed a recipe off the Internet. It went down incredibly well. That was a real surprise for everyone involved.
Whatâs the most romantic thing your wife has done for you?
She tried to throw a surprise party for me but she was really rubbish at keeping it a secret. But she tried and that was romantic. I did something really great for our proposal. I made our mutual friend pretend to book a holiday to Paris and then tell us they couldnât go so did we want the tickets. Then I got my parents involved so when my wife called them to ask them to look after our daughter they were like âOh this is very last minuteâŚâ When we got to Paris I got down on one knee outside the Sacre-Coeur. She was totally shocked.
What are the most used emoji youâve got?
I donât like using them. At my age I slightly missed them. But I sometimes use the monkey covering his eyes. Maybe my vocabulary is too small but I canât think of something that describes the monkey covering its eyes in just one word.
Tom Bateman
Age: 28
Originally from⌠Oxford, UK
Youâll recognise him⌠as the violent table-smashing Robert Jekyll in ITVâs Jekyll and Hyde and as a handsome and hilarious Shakespeare in the stage adaption of Tom Stoppardâs Shakespeare In Love. Next up youâll see him playing Amy Schumerâs love interest in Snatched and he stars as Bouc in the 2017 version of Murder On The Orient Express alongside Johnny Depp.
So was acting always the plan?
I grew up in Oxford, thatâs where my fake posh accent comes from! I wanted to be a thousand different things but I didnât have the commitment to do any of them. But my family is all very creative so it stems from there. Iâve got thirteen siblings!
Hang on, what?
Iâve got a twin, weâre not identical but my baby brother actually really looks like me. And then there are 10 others. Some are half siblings.
What do they think of your career?
I come from a very modest background so when I told my parents they said: âWe canât support you but chase what makes you happy.â I think that is good advice. They were very happy that I found something that I loved doing for living.
Youâve come straight to tonightâs party from the set of Murder On The Orient Express. Whatâs it like?
Stunning! Before Christmas we were filming on a 70ft high mountain range. All the action takes place on and around the train. My character Bouc owns the train and is Poirotâs best friend. I help him in solving the case.
Youâre working with some pretty impressive co-stars?
Itâs like Hollywood royalty. Weâve got like Derek Jacobi, Judi Dench, Olivia Colman, and then thereâs Johnny Depp, Daisy Ridley and Penelope Cruz too. So itâs basically everyone! I had to do a scene which was a speech in front of the whole cast and I said âthis is like being at the at Oscars.â
In Snatched you star alongside Amy Schumer. Is she as hilarious IRL?
She is great! She is absolutely hugely intelligent and also very sensitive. A real laughing person to those around her. But she is actually quite shy if you really get to know her.
Has a co-star ever given you good advice?
You learn by seeing. Working with Judi Dench, I mean she is heaven on Earth. The way she treats people as well as acts, you think this is who I aspire to be.
Whatâs your go-to karaoke song?
I once won a competition once with Easy â Commodores.
What word or phrase do you overuse?
Probably âLots of love.â I say it to everyone!
Whatâs your go-to cocktail?
A Negroni. Go big or go home! And itâs the only one I can make.
Most used emojis?
I genuinely donât know what those are. Are they like smiley faces? I donât use those. I think theyâre shortcuts and awful. I donât really text, I like phone calls.
So youâre not into social media either?
No f**k that. I was and felt like I was selling my soul. I mean do we really need to see photos of what people are eating for breakfast?
From left â right: Sacha Dhawan, Rory Fleck-Byrne and Scott Arthur
Sacha Dhawan
Age: 33
Originally from⌠Stockport
Youâll know him from⌠24: His big James Bond moment in Live Another Day, as well as gritty crime drama Line of Duty, and the period drama for fashionistas Mr. Selfridge
When did you first describe yourself as an actor?
I used to tap dance when I was a kid and the teacher said to my parents, â His tap dancingâs not bad but he should really go into performing.â She set me up with an agent in Manchester and soon after I was cast in a childrenâs series, Out of Sight, at the age of 12. So around about then, I guess.
Does the acting bug run in the family?
No but both of my parents are singers. My Dad is huge fan of Elvis so he sings and my Mum is a beautiful Indian singer. Theyâve got more confidence to get up in front of the family than me. Because Iâm an actor, theyâre always trying to get me to do a monologue. Iâm, like, guys, no WAY.
What was the first VHS/ DVD you bought?
Making Michael Jacksonâs Thriller by Douglas Kirkland and also â this is really embarrassing â Dirty Dancing. Me and my sister used to watch it on endless repeat.
Have you ever had any on-set disasters?
Sometimes you think youâre invincible and, one time, I had to throw a guy over my shoulder. The producer said, âWeâll get you a double,â but I was insistent on doing it myself. And then I went and dislocated my shoulder.
Whatâs your go-to karaoke song?
Summer Nights from the Grease soundtrack. I might even put it on Spotify on the way home.
What word or phrase do you overuse the most?
'Imaginationâ and âmate.â I call guys and girls âmate.â It's a northern thing.
Youâve got friends coming around for drinks. Tell us your signature cocktail.
Espresso Martinis to perk everyone up a bit. Or set them up for a fall.
Whatâs the most romantic thing someone has done for you in London?
For my thirtieth, my significant other told me we were just going out for dinner. But sheâd booked a restaurant and invited all of my closest friends, which was amazing given that sheâd never even met half of them. It was perfect.
Rory Fleck-Byrne
Age: 27 Originally from⌠Ireland
Youâll recognise him⌠from films including The Quiet Ones and Vampire Academy plus this year youâll spot him starring alongside Pierce Brosnan in thriller The Foreigner.
What was the fist VHS you bought? I think it was the Lion King. I feel so sorry for adults that didnât watch it during their childhood. It is like the Lion King is our Hamlet.
Whatâs been your worst on-set disaster?
When I was doing a fight exam for a role my sword broke so I had to keep styling it out. I was trying to put it back together but couldnât. I ended up with a bit of blade in my bare hand. I think I can handle anything after that.
Has a co-star ever given you some good advice?
Pierce Brosnan. He is a very open, connected and grounded individual. He kept saying to me: âStay open, live well, be good to yourself. It was more about how I looked after myself as opposed to my career or how I acted. Just watching him was a lesson in itself really.
Whatâs your Monday morning motivation motto?
I watch Meryl Streep making her speech at the Golden Globes. That kind of shit that will get you out of bed.
Tell us your signature cocktail recipe? A Negroni. And I have just tried a chocolate Negroni for the first time. You just add a bit of Mozart chocolate Liqueur. Some mixologists think it is wrong, but I am all about it.
What are your three most used emojis? The dancing senorita, peace and the concrete face. It is so random
Scott Arthur Age: 23
Youâll recognise him from⌠his big-screen debut alongside Jack OâConnell in the harrowing The Somnambulists, and last year played the lead in Bridgend, a drama that explored a mysterious real life suicide cluster that took place in Wales. Next up he joins Shia Labeouf in Borg Vs McEnroe, that looks at the epic 1980 Wimbledon final match.
What was the fist VHS/ DVD you bought? I spent my pocket money on Wayneâs World. I loved Mike Myers as a child. And I remember going to Blockbuster with my parents and I begged and begged for them to buy the Lion King, It is my favourite Disney movie by far.
Tell us about the best advice a co-star has given you? Shia LaBeouf said to me âDo what you want and donât do anything elseâ, which is what Brad Pitt had told him. A lot of actors get told to do what ever is given to you, and as much as I think that is sound advice, I think you need to be more responsible and have your own ownership over what you do. Always do what your gut tells you, if your gut is saying no, get out of there. Your gut will always tell you what is the truth, what is real and good and what is bullshit. Donât do any old shit because you will either end up hating it or yourself in it.
Whatâs your go-to karaoke song? I am quite alternative, I like doing womenâs songs like the Beautiful South. And being Welsh, the Stereophonics. It gets the crowd going, not like there is ever a crowd!
What word or phrase do you overuse the most? In Wales we basically say the word âmunâ at the end of a sentence. So you would say something like âFor godâs sake, munâ. It is Welsh colloquialism. I swear a lot as well which is quite bad, but I read something the other day that intelligent people like to swear a lot soâŚ
Whatâs your Monday morning motivation?
I donât have my phone by my bed any more. I have an alarm clock instead. So if I am not doing anything I will just sleep and wake up when I want to wake up. If I have got work my alarm goes off, I shower, and then I check my phone. Because of this day and age, we all wake up and check our phones but I was like I canât do this any more. I struggle some times but I do it.
Whatâs your go to getting ready for a party song? If I am going to a club I quite like hip hop, maybe a little bit of Drake or Kanye West. Anything that has a good beat or base and makes you go âF**k yeah I am loving thisâ.
Hermione Corfield Age: 23 Originally from⌠London Youâll know her from⌠Mission: Impossible â Rogue Nation with Tom Cruise, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies plus war TV drama The Halcyon. This year she stars in xXx: Return of Xander Cage alongside Vin Diesel, and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, directed by Guy Ritchie.
What was the first VHS/DVD you bought? I was given Top Cat in my Christmas stocking when I was four years old. However, I remember I had actually wanted The Aristrocats but I just wrote on my list âthe cat filmâ so I ended up with Top Cat.
What has been your most challenging role? Playing Emma Garland in The Halcyon just due to the sheer volume of it. We filmed six days a week for five months. So stamina wise definitely that.
Have you ever had any funny on-set disasters? I have spilt coffee on myself multiple times. Iâm always told to wear a dressing gown and donât and then end up almost in tears saying âI am so so sorry I have done it again!â And I corpse (film slang for spontaneous laughing) a lot as well. That is a big one for me!
What word or phrase do you overuse the most? âThatâs it.â I always say âthatâs it.â My friend from Wales is like where did you pick that up from it is so Welsh?
Whatâs your Monday morning motivation? Music. I just blast it on my speakers.
Tell us your signature cocktail recipe? I am quite good at making a mescal, lime coriander and chilli thing that I learnt in Mexico.
Eoin Macken
Age: 34
Originally from⌠Dublin
Youâll know him from⌠Sixteenth Century small screen romp The Tudors, TV fantasy series Merlin, and fast paced hospital drama The Night Shift
When did you first describe yourself as an âactorâ
I still feel like Iâm learning and becoming an actor. Make sense?
What was the first VHS/ DVD you bought?
The French film La Haine. I bought the special edition and I remember being very excited, because it was hard to get your hands on.
Whatâs been your most challenging role?
Killing Jesus with Kelsey Grammer, because I was playing Herod Antipas, an unlikeable character who put the thorns on Jesusâs head. It was my job to make the audience warm to him. I tried to understand him in terms of politics, how people are put in positions and you canât always necessarily judge them.
Have you had any on-set accidents?
I cut up my wrist punching a window once. I was in character and I didnât realise Iâd actually sliced it open. I carried on filming when I really should have got it seen to. When I finally went to hospital the nurse had to reopen the wound and take the glass out. She gave me a big telling off.
Whatâs your go-to karaoke song?
Ice-Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice. It canât really fail. People are genuinely amused even if youâre terrible.
What was the last lie you told?
That Iâd be at this event in five minutes when I knew I was really half-an-hour away.
What word or phrase do you overuse the most?
You know?â Itâs in every other sentence.
Whatâs your Monday morning motivation?
Give me a pot of coffee with cinnamon and a newspaper on a Monday morning and Iâm all set.
Whatâs your go-to getting ready for a party song?
Come Together by Primal Scream
Youâve got friends coming around for drinks. Tell us your signature cocktail.
Straight whisky. Then you know who youâre real friends are because theyâll drink it with you.
What are your top three most used emojis?
The smiley face with the wink, the one where the eyes look totally perplexed and the jazz hands. Usually all at once.
Patrick Gibson
Age: 21
Originally from⌠Ireland
Youâll recognise him from⌠The OA, where he plays the terrifying Steve Winchell, the deeply troubled bully who strikes up a friendship with Prairie played by Brit Marling. Next up he stars alongside Idris Elba and Abraham Lewis in Guerrilla plus he has landed the lead role The White Princess, the highly anticipated follow-up to historical drama series The White Queen
What was the first VHS/DVD you bought? Donny Darko. It is to this day one of my favourite films. I remember I got a portable DVD for Christmas, which Iâd watch it on. Thatâs so weird because now you just watch it on your phone.
Whatâs been your most challenging role? Every role is in its own way is quite challenging, I feel like I am starting from scratch every time. It is always different approaching every character. The OA was tough in a lot of ways, physically but also emotionally which I didnât realise at the time.
What about funny on-set disasters?
This probably doesnât sound that funny, but in hindsight it is kind of. So there was a scene that we did in OA where I have my dog with me and I basically tell it to attack Prairie â which is Brit Marlingâs character. One of the dogs was extra aggressive in real life and I was told not to say attack at the end of the scene because it really would attack. It was like a three-minute scene and we got really into it. At the end I shouted âAttackâ and it did. It really went for Brit. But luckily the dog was well trained enough that he stopped mid air.
Whatâs your go-to getting ready for a party song? Itâs so corny. I didnât even realise I was this cheesyâŚbut it has got to be Drake. Any Drake tunes.
Tell us your signature cocktail recipe? I made mojitos for two years, not in my house but in an actual bar, so mojitos it has got to be.
What are your top three most used emojis? Without looking at my phone? The glitter stars one, the wave and the dancing girl in the red dress. Do you have a strategy for making it big or do you think it is all about luck? I donât know if I want to make it big in the conventional sense of being a celebrity. My strategy is hopefully to always do work that I am genuinely passionate about and scripts that I really believe in. And to think if there was no money involved would you still want to do it.
Abraham Lewis Age: 21 Originally fromâŚLondon Youâll recognise him from⌠How to Talk to Girls at Parties where he played the smooth talking Vic. Next up he stars alongside Idris Elba in Sky Atlantic political drama Guerilla.
What do your family make of your career choice?
When my mum who is an actor told my grandfather who is also an actor that I wanted to do acting too along with my sister he said âOh fuck not another one!â My dad is an actor too and he was quite cautious as knows how tough this industry is but they are all amazingly supportive now.
What has been your most challenging role? In Guerilla I play a heroin addict and had to loose 25 pounds in a month and a half to do it. And also the headspace of an addict is really weird so that left me feeling quite low at times.
What word or phrase do you overuse the most? I think everyone my age overuses the word âlikeâ. I hate it when I use it.
Whatâs your Monday morning motivation? When I was going to the gym a lot for Guerilla I started watching these YouTube videos by a guy called The Hip Hop Preacher to motivate me. He is really cool.
Tell us your signature cocktail recipe? I used to be a cocktail waiter. I make a good Dark and Stormy.
Whatâs your go-to getting ready for a party song? Young Americans by David Bowie. Whatâs the most romantic thing someone has done for you in London? Next up is a major Netflix series Gypsy and blockbuster Murder On The Orient Express.
Like Tom (Bateman) youâve come straight from the set of the Orient Express. Whatâs your character like?
I play Countess Andrenyi. Sheâs a Hungarian countess and ballerina. I get to wear some fantastic handmade 1930s costumes. Itâs all very opulent and extravagant.
That sounds pretty different from the Netflix series Gyspy youâve just wrapped in New York?
Definitely. Thatâs about a psychotherapist played by Naomi Watts who becomes too immersed in the lives of her patients. I play Alison, a drug addict. She is addicted to speed so I used to eat a lot of M&Ms for breakfast at 7am to portray that jiggy feeling and hysteria.
Did you read lots of books on psychology?
I did, Iâve always been interested in psychology and have taken classes. It helps with acting, like understanding people and why they are how they are.
Are you starting to get recognized more?
Iâm what the industry call a âplain actorâ. I have this thing where no one remembers me. Plus Iâve changed my hair colour a lot so I think that helps.
What word do you overuse?
I tend to refer to every one as âwomanâ but thatâs better than girls or hun right?
Favourite karaoke song?
I donât do it. Iâll go and support my friends but thatâs it. Iâm a cheerer. Iâll holler!
Tell us your go-to cocktail?
Aperol spritz. Every single time. Even in winter.
Whatâs your Monday morning motivation?
Iâm not a morning person. And at the moment my call time is 4am. So I just have to remind myself how much I love my job!

When did you first describe yourself as an âactor?â
My first job was a play called South Downs at the Harold Pinter theatre in the West End and an actress in the cast turned to me and said, âIs this something you want to carry on doing?â It was the first time someone had asked me that question and it made me realise that I did. Before that I never realised it was something that would pay my rent.
What was the first DVD you bought?
Matilda by Danny DeVito. My friend and I can quote pretty much every line from that film.
What has been your most challenging role?
I recently did an episode of Black Mirror (Shut Up and Dance) and played a very troubled person. Trying to understand someone who I donât feel like Iâve got any connection otherwise was tricky. But when the script is good, it makes it easier.
Have you ever had any on-set disasters?
I did a film last year called Old Boys and the character I played spends all of his time falling into muddy water or tripping over and generally being quite miserable. My memory of it was being very wet and very cold.
Whatâs your go-to karaoke song?
Abatina by Calypso Rose. Itâs got this wonderful Afro beat to it. Iâm obsessed with it.

ArinzĂŠ Kene Age: 29 Originally from: Lagos, Nigeria and raised in London Youâll recognise him from⌠The Pass opposite Russell Tovey, the Netflix series Crazyhead and this year spot him in the Shakespearean drama Some Sweet Oblivious Antidote
When did you first describe yourself as an actor? That hasnât happened yet. I have what is called imposter syndrome. I kind of think one day someone is going to come knocking on my door and say âHey man, you told everyone you are an actor, but you are just a normal bloke and you have somehow tricked everybody. The majority of the time I say to people I perform rather than saying I am an actor. It just feels weird coming out of my mouth.
What was the first VHS/DVD you bought? When I was young I looked older than I was. I remember buying a film called Crooklyn, by Spike Lee when I was blatantly only fourteen and should have been much older to be allowed to.
What was the last lie you told? On my way here the driver asked me âAre there a lot of famous people in there?â and I said no, none at all. What word do you overuse the most? Absolutely. I say absolutely way too much. I only realised it the other day when I was writing an e-mail.
Whatâs your Monday morning motivation? Meditating. I do it every morning when I wake up. I mean if you have to take a piss then do it but get right in there with the meditating afterwards.

When did you first describe yourself as an actor?
When I was 18 years old I told my teachers that I wanted to be an actor and they were like âOh that is a silly thing to want to do.â So when I landed a theatre job while still doing my A-levels I turned to them and said âIâm now an actor.â
What was the first VHS you bought? Watership Down. And I loved it. Apparently to the point where my mum and dad were like: âIf we have to watch Watership down one more timeâŚâ
Tell us about the best advice a co-star has given you? I worked with a theatre actress called Eleanor Methven who told me to never look at anyone elseâs career because everyoneâs career is different and to just concentrate on your own.
What has been your most challenging role? My character in The Fall was a schizophrenic with convulsive and delusional disorders. That was pretty hefty. For the role I did loads of research and watched a lot of documentaries about mental health and illnesses. I wanted to be really respectful to people who suffer from it too. So I felt a lot of pressure with that.
What word or phrase do you overuse the most? Class, which is a Belfast word for brilliant. I use âThatâs classâ all the time.
Whatâs your Monday morning motivation?
I just think you have got to get paid donât you? And actually, I love the shower. If I can bring myself to shower I will spend ages in there, and a good song in the shower to listen to. That will get you going.
What is the most romantic thing someone has done for you in London? Surprised me by flying in from New York.

In a film called Butterfly Kisses, which premiers at the Berlin Film Festival next week, I play a 16-year-old prostitute from a council estate who had to sleep with people to feed her younger siblings. It was difficult to be in that mindset.

I worked with Suranne Jones when I was 13 and, afterwards my work ethic changed. I canât remember exactly what she said, but she made me be a better actress.â

Believe by Cher. I got very drunk in Malaga once, got my ear pierced on the strip and sang this to my ex who wasnât there.

What has been your most challenging role?
The one I played in Godâs Own Country which premiers at the Berlin Film Festival next week. I lost two-and-a-half stone and Iâm already quite slight so I looked pretty gaunt.
Tell us about the best advice a co-star has given you?
I worked on Florence Foster-Jenkins with Meryl Streep â name drop there! I was terrified and filming started the day after Glastonbury so I wasnât in the best shape. I was visibly anxious. She said to me ânever be nervous.â It was amazing because it worked.
Whatâs your go-to karaoke song?
Angels by Robbie Williams. Iâm not a classy guy.
What word or phrase do you overuse the most?

The thinking face, the face thatâs rolling its eyes and the fire. The last oneâs an in joke and I use it a lot.

When I dropped out of uni â I was studying Media Design â I had to start calling myself an actor for people to start taking me seriously. Once you make that step, it all starts unraveling.
What was the first VHS/ DVD you bought?
My Great Uncle owned a rental VHS shop so I used to watch whatever was lying around. Jaws was probably one of the first films I ever saw. To this day, Iâm still terrified of sharks.
What has been your most challenging role?
Probably playing Bobby Moore. Itâs quite the story; battling cancer and then winning the world cup. But, throughout filming, I was hyper aware that he was such an iconic football player and such a hero to so many people, so I had to get it right.
Have you ever had any funny on-set stories?
Whilst filming Tina & Bobby, Michelle Keegan and I were driving along in a beautiful old sixties Jag. Iâm really into my music so would play stuff that was appropriate to the era. I was trying to find a track and for some reason, the Notorious B.I.G came on and my phone froze. We did have a laugh about that.
Whatâs your go-to karaoke song?
I actually worked in a karaoke bar for a year! Mine is A Little Less Conversation by Elvis. I donât know the words off by heart but I have fun singing it after a few drinks.

What are your top three most used emojis?
I use the crying with laughter one when Iâm totally stony faced. The winky face I use but I HATE the winky face with the tongue sticking out. I mean, whatâs that supposed to express? Donât answer that.
