Hi, I'm an Australian living in Ireland. I've never lived in a country that has rabies. Keep your cats indoors.

Even in countries that don't have rabies there's FIV, FeLV, panleukopaenia, dogs, and fucking cars. Even in countries that don't have rabies, outdoor cats kill wildlife at a devastating pace without you even knowing about it. Even in countries without rabies, cats displace native small carnivores. Even in countries without rabies, displacement by and/or interbreeding with domestic cats drives native wildcat species to extinction. Even in countries without rabies, other carnivores opportunistically prey on cats. Even in countries without rabies, so-called working cats kill more wildlife than they do mice and rats. Even in countries without rabies cats can get lost or severely injured or kidnapped or go feral. Even in countries without rabies the average lifespan of an outdoor cat is about 3 years vs about 15 indoors.

I've been reading so much about rabies and cats and there are so few cat owners who keep their cats up to date on rabies vaccinations and buds please keep your kitty's jabs up-to-date and please please please keep your cats inside and please treat any cat with an unknown vaccination history as a wild animal and don't try to touch it or pet it or catch it.

The most recent survivor of the Milwaukee protocol is an 8 year old girl who contacted rabies through scratches from feral cats that lived in a colony at her school.

Don't touch strange cats even if they're friendly, and teach your kids not to touch strange cats either. (For that matter teach your kids not to touch strange dogs either, but decades of stray eradication and mandatory vaccines means that the US is one of the few places in the world where cats are more likely to be rabid than dogs)

Also did you know that there's one case of transplant-acquired rabies recorded in the US? The recipient got a kidney from a donor who died in an accident and nobody was aware the donor had rabies. The recipient died of rabies, which is a bit of an extreme flavor of graft failure if you ask me. Terrifying!

Anyway. If you, too, want to have nightmares about rabies you can search my website (www.ms-demeanor.com) for "keep your fucking cat indoors" and scroll to the section on rabies and read some nightmare fuel (like the case report on the family that moved across 3 states with their 13 barn cats, unaware that one was incubating rabies).

Did you know that in 1994, 665 people in New Hampshire had to be given post exposure prophylaxis for rabies because of one infected kitten that had contact with a racoon before being brought to a pet store?

The only way animals are tested for rabies is to examine their brain tissue. The animal is killed in order to do this. If your pet is exposed to rabies they stand a much, much, much better chance of being quarantined instead of being euthanized for testing if you have kept their vaccinations current.

Please keep your pets' vaccinations up to date, and please keep your cat indoors. There's a risk of exposure even for indoor cats, so make sure they've got their shots.

The Scottish wildcat has been wiped out by breeding with domestic cats

After 2000 years of isolation, a few decades of interbreeding have rendered the animal “genomically extinct”

Though it lies in ruins on the northeast coast of England, Kilton Castle was once an imposing stone fortress, home to several noble families, and—it appears—at least eight cats. Archaeological excavations in the 1960s uncovered a well, at the bottom of which lay the bones of several felines dating back to the 14th century. The animals were an odd mix: Some were domestic cats, but other, larger specimens appeared to be European wildcats, a fierce, burly species that has inhabited the continent for hundreds of thousands of years. The two species’ closeness in death was deceptive. A study published today in Current Biology finds that even though European wildcats and domestic cats overlapped in Great Britain for more than 2000 years—including at sites such as Kilton—they appear to have almost never interbred. That changed suddenly about 70 years ago, when domestic cats began to mate with wildcats in Scotland. In the span of mere decades, the genome of the Scottish wildcat—the last remaining wildcat in Great Britain—has become so corrupted that the animal is now effectively extinct, a second study in the same issue finds. The findings could complicate ongoing efforts to save the most endangered mammalian carnivore in Great Britain...

Just read Catwoman: Her Sister’s Keeper and I adored Newell’s writing. Was wondering if they’re any details in it you particularly liked or think might be overlooked.

Such a fantastic Catwoman story (Tw for discussion of underage prostitution and rape)

I believe it was probably controversial at the time, though you can find lots of praise for it, I think people at the time were still wrapping their heads around her being turned into a prostitute, and an underaged one too. And while most Catwoman stories tend to tip toe around this dark part of Selina’s childhood, Her Sister’s Keeper dives into the bleakness and despair of this life, and the desperation to escape it

Once Selina starts training with Ted, it doesn’t take long at all for her to start jumping in to action, usually to protect Holly Robinson, an even younger prostitute that lives with her. We see that protective instinct that’s always been there come out when she finally has the abilities to fight back against her situation

Selina shielding Holly with her jacket always makes me think of Batman protecting someone with his cape

I think there hasn’t been a better written version of Magdalene Kyle since this story, the way it shows the duality between these two sisters is beautiful. One of the quotes used to open the second issue of this series is from Rudyard Kipling The Jungle Book, “we be of one blood, thou and I” but it hits even harder when you read the full quote

At the beginning of the series we see Selina in the immediate aftermath of being beaten and raped by her pimp. She is found outside of the immaculate virgin by the Nuns in the convent, including her sister Magdalene, who starts taking care of the stray cat that had kept her sister’s unconscious body company before help arrived. She prays for Selina’s safety, but knows there is none to be found on the streets of Gotham

Stan later kicks this same cat, and after months of no contact during Selina’s training with Wildcat, Selina jumps Stan in the same ally he assaulted her

Maggie heard the commotion, and rushed outside to catch a glimpse of Selina before she runs away again. Maggie goes to the detective that gave Selina Ted’s number, and asks about her sister. Finding no help she goes looking by herself

Magdalene finds Holly, who actually refers to Selina as her mother

Holly tells Selina her sister is searching for her, and Selina returns to the last place they saw each other

It’s a short reunion, Selina is clearly still scared to be around Maggie for too long, afraid the danger and bleakness of her own life might seep into her saintly sister’s. Maggie pleads for Selina to stay, Selina warns Maggie off the streets, and escapes to the rooftops. Immediately after she leaves, Stan the pimp kidnaps Maggie in retaliation for the beating Selina dealt him.

As soon as Selina finds out her sister is missing, she hitches a ride with one of Stan’s friends to his apartment, and finds Maggie’s cross

Catwoman rushes to save Magdalene, and as Maggie is dangling over the side of a ledge during the confrontation between Selina and Stan, she has the same thought her sister did

Selina begs Stan to leave Maggie alone, even offering herself to him again, but Stan won’t listen, and attempts to kill Maggie

Batman is there to save her just in time thankfully (and let Stan die)

Batman stays with Magdalene to make sure she’s alright, and Maggie kind of instantly clocks the connection between Selina and him

Directly after this traumatic experience, Catwoman has a bit of a moral crisis, knowing she didn’t intend to kill Stan on purpose, but also believing he deserved to die. She now thinks her Catwoman persona is turning her into a murderer, and confesses this to Maggie

One of the cops working the “Missing Nun” case found Holly while all this was going down and roughed her up for no real reason other than knowing Selina.

Holly goes to find Selina, and she’s furious at how Holly was treated. First she tries to speak with the detective who had helped her once, but even “good cops” will be looking out for other cops before they look out for whores

Selina drops Holly off at Maggie’s convent, and this panel right here is probably my favorite Maggie/Selina moment

“Do you really feel so much safer in there?”

“Do you?”

Batman stops Catwoman in the middle of beating up Captain Strunk, knowing her life would be over if she became a cop killer, Selina answers “as opposed to a pimp killer?”

Such a beautiful, grim annd ambitious story. I really wish modern comics could be this mature again. And even though these themes are hard to read about, they shouldn’t be watered down to make things more marketable

it was a routine survey stop until the neutrino background occlusion sensors showed something dense and geometric, buried shallowly in one of the planet’s least interesting mountain ranges. a First Expansion artifact. had to be. this system wasn’t in the databases except as an ID number, but the ancients must have done some wildcat exploration, right? they were people, not so different in range from the saints and scammers of today. except that their tech made anything you had look like toys.

the captain was the first to put boots on the ground. she said a perfunctory little speech, the records officer took a picture for the video wall, and then you all did what you came here for: excavation. hand-sized mu-cat fusion charges scythed the top of the ridge off, one of the more reproducible First Expansion technologies, clean and cheap. then it was earthmovers and jackhammers. a slog, but nobody complained. nobody wanted to risk damaging it.

slowly, a truncated tetrahedron emerged from the shattered sandstone, some kind of transport container, a type also not in the databases. it had been here a very long time to be buried so thoroughly in sediment turned to rock. excitement reverberated through the crew. survey work was for the good of all mankind, but all mankind rarely showed gratitude for confirming that a large round rock was still there. this could be it, the big score.

you were the one who cracked the last veneer of sandstone off the bronze-ish surface of the tetrahedron, worked out where to put the power cables for the hatch (at least the ancients didn’t mess around with their standards much). but the captain insisted on being the one who pressed the button. the triangular hatch folded forward to the ground, forming a ramp.

when the small shape walked down it, everybody tensed up. hands went to hips, those that weren’t already holding sidearms. the ship itself was in a long-dwell-time orbit, near overhead this spot, and you could practically feel the targeting radars for heavier weapons on the back of your neck. but the thing didn’t look particularly threatening. it looked like a little person, with exaggerated proportions.

was it a toy? had you spent the last week digging up a toy? but a toy with an independent power source that apparently hadn’t needed to be topped off since the Collapse was still worth something.

until it spoke. intelligibly.

“that was a dirty trick for Miss to play.”

the captain, caught on the wrong foot, said, “i’m sorry?”

“you needn’t be. i require only your assistance in catching up to Her. She does love Her tricks, but i should be by Her side.”

something flashed across your ocular implants. tac channel directives from the captain:

old AIs can get very single-minded. ready EM scrambler needle pulse on my mark.

“you flatter me, but i’m not that fancy. i’m just a simple doll. but you have a ship.”

“i’m sure we can work something out, in exchange for—”

you saw it move only as a blur.

it was up to the captain’s neck, but the captain’s head wasn’t on it any more. a long triangular blade glittered in one of its small hands. the other held the captain’s armored cortical recorder.

“my apologies. that wasn’t a question.”

it popped the molecular database implant backing up the captain’s mind and soul into its mouth, and chewed with some apparent relish. the body slumped slowly to the debris-strewn ground under it.

“now i have a ship. does anyone want to help me drive it? i’m afraid i’m some… eight thousand? years out of practice, and Miss preferred to do Her own piloting anyway.”

there was a flurry of small arms fire. it didn’t help. the particle beams on the ship should have discharged but didn’t, a fact you were grateful for, at least initially. you stayed your own trigger finger on some impulse you couldn’t explain. it saved your life. sort of.

you’ve been in the pilot’s interface chair for forty-seven hours now, the little nightmare holding the knife to your neck the entire time. the few other survivors are in no shape to mount a rescue, not from inside an automed casket. the “doll” seems quite certain that its “Miss” is still alive somewhere. you don’t know how long you’ll be able to say the same. □

Small shazam Idea: Training With Wildcat!

One day Captain Marvel asked the former worldwide champion boxer Wildcat to train one of his close friends.

"Why don't you train him yourself?" He asked

"I am not a good teacher, besides, you're the best man I could think of for the job" Captain Marvel smiled

And so, on the next day, Wildcat encounters a young boy in front of his Boxing Place.

"This is the friend Cap's been talking about!? A scrawny kid? He definitely needs more protein to build muscles"

Wildcat would then Train Billy how to box, but he questions why a civillian child would learn how to defend themselves, this is not like back in his day after all where Crooks and mobs are everywhere

"I know what you're thinking Mister, but I am a reporter working closely with Captain Marvel, there will be a time where he can't save me, so I figure, why not start here?" The young boy chuckled.

"Even his smile is similar to Captain Marvel.." Wildcat thought to himself, a bit saddened that a young boy like this had to take up a job, and learn how to fight in this day and age

The day would eventually get weirder when Captain Marvel knew the boxing techniques that Wildcat had shown to Billy.

"How did you know that move?"

"Oh that? Billy showed me! He said you're pretty cool!" Marvel beamed

thinking about how eiji's a pole vaulter and how ash talks about eiji "flying" and how eiji's associated with bird imagery and how eiji's free (unlike ash) and how eiji comes in on a plane and leaves on a plane and how ash cannot fly, ash cannot be free, how nyc is ash's prison, and how ash is the leopard who dies climbing the mountain, unable to live at such elevation, how he was trying to reach the sky and be free but was always stuck to the earth, how he chose to die instead of climbing back down, how he chose to die where he could see the sky and hope and freedom almost like a bird with eiji's letter right in front of him rather than letting everything go wrong and ruin it once again, how eiji's a failed pole vaulter anyway, how a bad fall ruined his career and grounded him (physically and emotionally), how it took flying to america and meeting ash and needing to save him and skip for him to try flying again, how he landed hard and harsh and still the thought of that escape compelled ash to protect eiji at all costs because if he could fly that means something to him, even if he doesn't think he can fly, how eiji is the manifestation of his hope and how when he breaks and asks eiji to stay with him a while he folds himself over his legs and weighs him down and traps him and grounds him, how ash fights like hell to keep eiji alive not because he thinks he can be like him (hopeful, flying, innocent), but because he makes him forget the gravity of his situation, and so he can see eiji fly again. how he wants to see him escape. how eiji is a bird and ash is a wildcat and how ash never once saw eiji as prey. how eiji never saw ash as a predator. how it is eiji's naivete that first endears ash to him, how it is his freedom and flight and removal from darkness and his ability to leave that darkness that really roots eiji in ash's blood as something essential to him keeping on living in this hell of nyc. how it is that distance from the violence and that hope for the future that ash chooses to surround himself in as he dies. how ash dies in a dream because he feels more than anything that he can't fly like eiji, that he can never leave. how his violence is a part of him and will be forever, how it weighs him down. how he wants to enjoy the view from the mountainside rather than looking up from the ground below. as if they can both fly. as if he is with him up there and not grounded. eye-to-eye with what he can't have, seeing eiji's homeland: the sky. how he dies trying to reach the top because he couldn't take retreating and trying again. how ash, tired and tired and tired and convinced it will go on forever if he crawls back down the mountain, chooses to close his life deluged in eiji, in eiji's insistence that they can fly together, in eiji's hope for him and for them, in eiji's beautiful dream. how ash dies without trying to realize that dream. how ash, in dying, destroys it.

The Final Four Episodes of Season 7 Confirmed

On June 1st, 2025, at the start of this month, I made it to Wild Kratts Live for the first time. It was a truly breath-taking experience to see the Kratt Brothers in person in what was essentially a very well put together live-action remake of a Wild Kratts episode.

As per usual, at the end of the show, they announced the future episodes that they worked on. For this month's show, they confirmed that they were finishing up the final four episodes of the 20-episode season. Here is a bootleg clip of the announcement from when I was there.

Anyways, here is what to expect from the final batch of episodes for the 7th season.

The fish-eating loon. This was previously alluded to in other live-shows, but essentially we'll be getting an episode on the loon, a major predator to freshwater and saltwater fish, and likely a loon-inspired Creature Power Suit.

African leopards. This was also confirmed in previous live-shows, however, this is the first instance (to my knowledge) that confirms that the leopard episode we're getting is that of the African leopard, mentioned several times with live-action footage in Season 1, and finally shown in animation in the Season 6 finale. More than definitely will we see a leopard-inspired suit to add to the roster of wildcat inspired Creature Power Suits.

Tree frogs. This animal was not previously mentioned in other WK live shows, but now we know the previously unmentioned animal whose feature episode will be included in the final batch. Martin confirms a Tree Frog Power Suit, so there is no doubt about it.

Armadillo. Another animal previously mentioned to have an episode. An interview with Martin reveals the plot for the armadillo episode, in which Zach challenges the Kratt Brothers to a bowling contest, whilst they're in their Armadillo Creature Power Suits.

Anyways, that's what we can expect. According to a current.org article, Season 7 will end in 2025, a two-year run for a 20-episode season of Wild Kratts as usual, so we can expect the Season 7 finale finale to air sometime this fall.

And now for your thoughts. Which episode are you excited for the most? Which Creature Power Suit are you excited for the most? Which animal are you excited to finally see in the spotlight? Which episode do you think is going to be the finale? And what do you hope to see in each episode?

Personally, I hope that the Tree frog episode brings back Rex. Tree frogs are endangered primarily because of habitat loss and logging. This could be a chance to finally show us what happened to Rex after Paisley's redemption and follow up on those loose threads by showing him threatening the tree frog habitat and either remaining a solo villain, or redeeming himself and getting back with Paisley to help her and the rest of the Kratts save, protect, and learn about tree frogs. Since this is going to be in the last batch of episodes for S7, I really hope they do this so that we can wrap up the Paisley/Rex story arc before the finale and establish a new status quo set in stone when Season 8 comes around (although I'm almost convinced that we won't see Paisley confront Zach, Donita, and Gourmand post-betrayal until Season 8, which I'm fine with).

I also hope the armadillo episode addressed the armadillo migration up north due to climate change, and how the one threat armadillos face in midwestern North America is cars on highway that endanger their species. It's been an ongoing thing happening in my town for the past 5 years that I think the show is very much in bound to tackle and shed light on.

Tracking their movements using GPS radio collars, we know 17 of the 19 released last June, have stayed within the project area. With some starting to settle down but most continuing to roam about the countryside, scoping out different areas.

Clinging by a Claw premieres

Clinging by a Claw, created by Saving Wildcats and produced by SCOTLAND: The Big Picture, offers an extraordinary insight into the journey of Scotland's wildcats from the brink of extinction to their return to the wilds of the Cairngorms National Park.

Narrated by Outlander star Sam Heughan, this film captures the breathtakingly beautiful landscapes of the Scottish Highlands where wildcats could have a future if they continue to receive the vital support they need.

Thanks to The European Nature Trust for their support with the making of this film, this heart-warming story takes you into the lives of these rare and elusive animals, revealing hidden moments never seen before.

Aviemore Premiere Tuesday 30 September at 7:00pm

Clinging by a Claw will be screened for the very first time at the Spey Valley Cinema at the Macdonald Resort in Aviemore at 7.00pm. The team are excited to welcome their local community to attend this free screening to show their appreciation for their support.

Inverness Premiere Tuesday 7 October at 7:00pm

The Inverness premiere is at Eden Court where it will be followed by a Q&A chaired by conservationist and TV presenter Megan McCubbin.

Edinburgh Premiere Wednesday 8 October at 7:00pm

The Edinburgh premiere is at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, where it will be followed by a Q&A chaired by TV presenter and wildlife expert Chris Packham
