and good night! this is like 12 days overdue lmao... do forgive me. since u asked for three I’m gonna have to go under the cut:

first, hanakou! I’m gonna say it does make sense, doesn’t compel me. I think like. I can see the bones of it—kou clearly cares for hanako, and his belief in him is to the point that he’ll stand up to his own brother about it. and this isn’t just bc he likes nene! it’s bc he cares about hanako in his own right. I think I really enjoy kou’s perception of hanako… there’s this line in the red house where he’s like. it would be easier if hanako was just an evil spirit and that’s always stuck with me. it’s also cool how hanako, for some point in time, is the only person other than kou who even knows about mitsuba. they’ve both got their own repression issues huh? where they just do things without explanation. the reason it just doesn’t compel me is like. I don’t have any real incentive to see it romantically? like. hanako’s relationship with kou is interesting to me in part because of how kou’s relationship with nene and mitsuba affects his relationship with hanako. his love for the both of them and wanting to “save” them aligns with how hanako wants to save nene, only hanako’s operating with a much higher degree of cynicism (and, some would say, realism). so i think it’s interesting to have this friendship between the two in the middle of that, and I don’t really feel an impetus to make it romantic.

aoinene on the other hand… it does makes sens and does compel me! aoinene’s so fascinating to me because like. they clearly adore each other and they’re like. girl best friends yknow. only nene doesn’t tell aoi about the whole ghost thing for the longest time and aoi doesn’t tell her about her issues with her hand. nene kind of idolizes aoi as this perfect popular pretty girl and I think, in some ways, aoi treats nene the same way? but her perception is of this naïve good-spirited kid she can’t quite be honest too. so like. that’s compelling, that they both love each other, but their understanding of the other lacks. and from the first chapters we see that nene’s like, dazzled by teru’s shine and such… she’s obviously kind of taken by this façade and also this very thin and minimal crush that’s not really love, right. so I feel like I could see aoinene be really interesting because aoi absolutely has her own version of this façade. we get into lots of fun stuff about honesty and what’s real and such. so this could definitely compel me romantically even though I haven’t thought about it much.

and tsukkiyama!!! does make sense and does compel me are you kidding me. what more do you need than pride!!! gonna lay down forever about it. tsukishima and yamaguchi are a really fun longtime-friends dynamic because they like. change? their relationship evolves but it doesn’t make them not important to each other, even if the shape of themselves and their interactions change. which is why that bond feels so strong. they both think each other is kind of the coolest actually. I’ve never really had the need to read much fic abt them tho? maybe I’ll look again sometime but its just like. man. their relationship in canon is so good to me already… ch 86-89 my beloved. the manga does a really good job of like… their relationship always feels real and solid but they’re also 100% individual people. and it’s such good development too. neither of them becomes a crazy genius but they develop as people. I love how hands-off tsukishima’s growth over canon is… like he’s a genuine good kid that just thinks a lot, and I don’t think he’d respond so well to people steamrolling over him with their own assumptions yknow? anyways tsukkiyama’s good. works in a sorta understated way where it being not too emphasized makes it work more, yknow. I loved reading haikyuu!! and thinking like why does a guy like tsukki hang around someone like yamaguchi? and then understand. oh. they’re both so earnest.

On Valentine's Day, Hinata, Suga, and Yams team up to make chocolates for everyone, but Noya crashes the party and secretly spikes the goods. The next day, the whole team gets so drunk, they black out and end up waking up in front of Tokyo Tower with Cupid headbands, Nekoma jerseys, and no clue how they got there

Deciding that Karasuno needs a mascot, Suga and Shimizu hold auditions for someone to be 'the Karasuno Crow.' Noya dares Hinata to do it, so he dons the uniform and steps up. However, during his tryout, he nails Kageyama—who came to watch the idiot make a fool of himself—in the face with a volleyball. Let's just say that was the first (and last) time mascot tryouts occurred

Noya loves horror movies—like loves loves them. Once, the team came over for a sleepover and Hinata and Asahi got so scared, they had to go home

Once Asahi got gum stuck in his hair and was terrified he would have to cut it, but Noya came to the rescue and got it out with a little mayonnaise. Asahi was so grateful he actually cried

Kags and Hinata end up attending the same college so they can keep playing volleyball together. While there, they rent an apartment together and one night Hinata shows up with a puppy. Kageyama's immediate response was 'hell no' but after Hinata told him the dog loved milk, he was part of the family. (They named him Moo)

Kenma once stayed up 24 hours straight playing Five Nights at Freddy's before finally rage-quitting at 4 in the morning and belly-flopping on top of a sleeping Kuroo to sulk

Kags once took Hinata and Natsu to Zao Fox Village and the siblings were so fascinated they ended up staying there the whole day. (Kageyama fell asleep on a bench at some point and woke up surrounded by foxes)

For Kageyama's birthday, Hinata got him a box full of Kasugai Milk no Kuni. He was so happy he cried for literally 2 hours—and that was before he found out Hinata also got them tickets to travel to Fuji Milk Land

The first time he watched Finding Nemo, Hinata cried. A lot. (Natsu even made fun of him a little)

Yams is a closet anime/manga fan. Tsukki is the only one that knows, and he usually buys him manga as birthday/holiday gifts

Karasuno once got into a snowball fight and word got out (*cough cough* Hinata told Kenma, who told everyone else *cough cough*) and soon Nekoma, Fukurōdani, Datekō, and Seijō all showed up and turned the fight into an all out war. It ended with half the participants in a snow coma and the others at a cafe celebrating their victory with hot cocoa

Hinata loves giving Kags surprise kisses during matches, like right after they nail a quick, he'll just pop up and boom give Kags a kiss on the forehead. Daichi considered forbidding it, but it rattled the other team (and was goddamn adorable) so he let it continue

Once, someone from another team called Hinata a dumbass and Kags went ballistic on them. ("I'm the only one that can call him dumbass, dammit!") Tsukki took a video and refuses to let him live it down, though Hinata seemed touched

Once Kags found Hinata sobbing on the kitchen floor at 4 in the morning in a pool of egg yolk because he dropped his Tamago gohan

Hinata's the type to totally fall head over heels for a person when he gets a crush, and Kageyama once discovered that he'd covered the inside of his notebook in 影山 翔陽—Kageyama Shōyō. (He actually fainted)

One time Hinata sprained his ankle and was forced to miss practice for 2 weeks. Kageyama recorded every single session for him and went over every day after practice to watch the videos with him so he didn't feel left out

Haikyuu characters and ships while quarantining headcanons

Hinata and Kageyama

they are absolutely devastated by the fact that they can’t play volleyball at a gym or outside anymore

... so they play inside. they no longer have any valauable objects

they have to do interviews for sports channels sometimes but they’re on opposing teams so they have to make it look like they somehow don’t share an apartment. it doesn’t work. everyone knows now

Kuroo and Kenma

kenma is SO HAPPY about the fact that he doesn’t have to go outside anymore. the few in person meetings that he had were all canceled. he’s thriving

kuroo on the other hand... very much isn’t. he has a ton of zoom calls per day and he’s so exhausted by the end

he misses his friends a lot too but he’s enjoying spending time with kenma

most of their days are spent together on the couch with kuroo doing work on his computer and kenma gaming and they’re very happy

doesn’t stop kuroo from constantly whining about the lack of bokuto in his life tho

Bokuto and Akaashi (+ Tsukishima and Yamaguchi)

... Bokuto gets the virus. but the night before he starts showing symptoms he gets drinks with tsukishima

so tsukishima gets it too. he’s distraught for multiple reasons, one being that he thought he was too smart to get covid and another being that he got it from bokuto of all people

yamaguchi and akaashi realize that the best way to handle it would be to have tsukishima and bokuto quarantine together in the bokuaka apartment while akaashi and yamaguchi stay in the tsukkiyama apartment for 2 weeks

upon hearing this news tsukki almost wishes that the virus would kill him

but he and bokuto actually end up getting along and don’t have the worst 2 weeks (except for the fact that they’re incredibly sick)

yamaguchi and akaashi however have a terrible time because they’re very worried about their boyfriends so they spend all their time visiting them to drop off food and facetiming them

eventually bokuto and tsukishima get better so they go back to living with their own boyfriends except now they have this thing uniting them unfortunately

Suga and Daichi

poor suga he’s an elementary school teacher. he spends the entire day at his kitchen table teaching children on zoom and he is SO TIRED. he comes close to quitting no less than 16 times but daichi is always there to remind him why he loves it

daichi’s a police officer so he still has to go to work in person which just adds to suga’s stress

but overall they’ve actually had a lot more time to spend together and make sure to eat breakfast and dinner together every day so their relationship is going strong they’re happy

Oikawa and Iwaizumi

Oikawa is actually in argentina and iwaizumi is in japan when the world goes into lockdown

they’d been doing long distance for a while but were supposed to see each other soon

so for a while they just video call all day but oikawa eventually decides to risk a plane ride home

after quarantining for 2 weeks oikawa is incredibly happy to be living with iwaizumi. they’re living their ideal domestic life that they didn’t have the chance to before due to being in different countries. oikawa knows he’ll have to go back to argentina soon but he’s enjoying this while he can

Noya and Asahi

noya and asahi are traveling the world when the pandemic hits. unfortunately, they get stuck in the united states

they use a huge chunk of their savings to rent the worlds tiniest apartment in nyc once it becomes clear that they’re going to be stuck in the us for a while

the us is a hot mess

they both desperately want to go back to japan but are worried that the risks of going on a plane aren’t worth it, so they try to get used to living in the us

they’re both shocked at the fact that masks are political in the united states and decide that they’re much safer inside their apartment because not everyone’s wearing a mask

come summertime japan is starting to go back to normal so all of noya and asahi’s friends are happy and the us is going back to normal too... except their number of cases hasn’t gone down. so they decide not to risk it and still stay inside and they’re incredibly frustrated with this stupid country

HQ Ships I Associate With Taylor Swift Songs

this is entirely self-indulgent but i don’t care. also this will contain manga spoilers, be warned

Dorothea and Kagehina: I could write an essay on why this song and this ship work, but I’ll keep it short and maybe make everything else into its own post. I see this song as mainly from Kageyama’s perspective - what really sells it on his POV is “if you ever get tired/of being known for who you know/you know you’ll always know me” is just so reminiscent of how Hinata knows so many people. This song also has the whole “friends to one watching the other from a distance while still being entirely loyal” theme that is just so incredibly Kagehina, as well as the way that the narrator describes their high school experience.

Lover and Bokuaka & Matsuhana: For Bokuaka, I mainly associate this song with them because I want them to be happy SO BADLY. But also I think that “can I go where you go?/will we always be this close” line is very Akaashi, while “swear to be overdramatic and true to my lover” is very Bokuto.

For Matsuhana, the lines that make me think of them are “i’ve loved you three summers now honey,” as they’ve known each other for three years, and “swear to be overdramatic and true to my lover/and you’ll save all your dirtiest jokes for me,” because that’s honestly SUCH a them line. (Can you tell that both of these are my favorite ships)

Enchanted and Bokuaka: The basic premise of “I was enchanted to meet you” could go for every haikyuu ship because all of them are kind of built around how the characters influence each other, but 1) Bokuaka deserves this song, 2) their whole thing is quite literally love at first sight (chapter 331) and 3) the lyrics are very Akaashi. “There I was again tonight, forcing laughter faking smiles/same old tired, lonely place/walls of insincerity/vanished when I saw your face” might just remind me of Bokuaka because I’m a sucker for rich and not very happy about rich culture!Akaashi but I also think that it applies to what we know from canon. “I’ll spend forever wondering if you knew/I was enchanted to meet you.” I think that Akaashi feels anxiety over what he means to Bokuto, and this line is kinda that. The theme of this song being love at first sight as well as wanting this person to really know you fits Bokuaka SO WELL.

Mary’s Song (Oh My My My) and Iwaoi: childhood friends to lovers!!!!! I see this song from Oikawa’s POV, with lyrics like “said you’d beat me up you were bigger than me/you never did” and “I dared you to kiss me and ran when you tried” it’s just very Iwaoi yknow? If you want to add some angst, it’s Oikawa looking back on their relationship as he leaves for Argentina :)

Message In a Bottle and Tsukkiyama: Message in a bottle came out literally today so I haven’t analyzed this as much but. “And I became hypnotized by freckles and bright eyes” is so incredibly Tsukki to Yams. This song’s whole message of feeling separate from your crush but wanting to reach out just feels a lot like them, so I associate it.

Gorgeous and Sakuatsu: This song/ship association is so important to me for no reason at all but I’m going to do it justice. This song is definitely from Sakusa’s POV, from specific lyrics to the way that it’s implied that the person singing is more introverted. To start: “you should take it as a compliment/that I got drunk and made fun of the way you talk” is just. Atsumu accent. Yeah. “You should think about the consequence/of your magnetic field being a little too strong” is most definitely their relationship dynamic from Sakusa’s POV, along with “You’re so cool, it makes me hate you so much.” In general, I like when this ship is portrayed with the “i want to kiss him. ew” type feeling, especially when one of them starts realizing Feelings, so “you're so gorgeous/I can't say anything to your face/'cause look at your face/and I'm so furious/at you for making me feel this way/but, what can I say?/you're gorgeous” really holds up. “Guess I’ll just stumble on home to my cats” I just think that Sakusa is a cat person. This paragraph is getting really fucking long so I’ll be quick: outside of the lyrics, the vibe of this song-music, rhythm, etc just feels very Sakuatsu to me, for some reason.

State of Grace and Kagehina: This is from Kageyama’s POV, I mean, “I never saw you coming/and I’ll never be the same” hello? This is like. The first episode and every single one after that. “You come around and the armor falls” really reminds me of how Hinata was the one who taught Kageyama that it doesn’t all rely on him; Hinata took away that “armor” of superiority. “This is the golden age of something good and right and real” is very much how these two changed the team for the better.

13. What is a subject matter that is incredibly difficult for you write about? What is easy?

oooh i have a really hard time writing action scenes. like, anything in same stars is a trial to write bc i just think, ok, the action happens, let's move on. because what's fun in one medium (a first-person shooter video game) can be really hard to translate into another (a longform fic about my OC, Miranda, who i am down to talk about at any and all hours). just... any long-form action scene.

this will probably not be a surprise, but it's easy (well, easier) for me to write dialogue (witty banter? sign me up!!!!) in most any form. i also love a good angst with a happy ending.

17. Talk to me about the minutiae of your current WIP. Tell me about the lore, the history, the detail, the things that won’t make it in the text.

YES YES YES YES THANK YOU FOR THIS YES!!!!!! these will all be about my current wip that i am working on/publishing, i wish to be found. these bullet points below may have some mild spoilers, so the rest of this answer is below the cut!!!!

though this is an au of you've got mail, i changed most everything but the central premise because i don't actually like the second half of the movie that much anymore.

this essentially follows the lore history that i set up in the world will follow after, where yamaguchi and tsukishima don't meet until adulthood. tsukishima's backstory is the same as it is in that au, and yamaguchi's is changed to make it so he was born and raised in tokyo working for his mother's bookstore.

in the world will follow after, yamaguchi mentions off-handedly that he wants to tattoo his right arm with constellations as well. in i wish to be found, a slightly older yamaguchi has actually gotten all of the tattoos he details wanting in that fic.

originally, there was going to be more kagehina, but i chose to cut them in order to focus more on the tsukkiyama, kuroken, and bokuaka storylines.

if yamaguchi and tsukishima are elizabeth and darcy from pride and prejudice, kenma and kuroo are anne and wentworth from persuasion. these are parallels i want to delve into more in a kuroken-specific side story.

speaking of storylines, i got the name for yamaguchi's store and for the bookends company name from fantasynamegenerators. emily is a godsend. their story - that suga was a bookends competition winner that got together with his assigned editor - is mentioned in passing for backstory.

i briefly considered adding a daisuga getting-together subplot, but decided against it for the same reasons as reducing the amount of kagehina.

i look up and save the floor plans/zillow listings for every home location in my stories.

suga's character traits/info in my draft doc is literally just

in the final scene of chapter 1, tsukishima refers to his meeting about the next bookends location as "business as usual." in chapter 6, yamaguchi uses the same phrase during their fight.

the café fight was the first scene i wrote for this story.

tsukishima's message to yamaguchi, "find me when you're ready," is a direct homage to the title, "i wish to be found."

this is a slight spoiler for the chapter i haven't posted yet, but the fantasy world tsukishima creates for his bookends submission is the same homebrew world i created for a D&D campaign that fizzled out. the characters he uses are all NPCs i made for that campaign, too.

i mentioned this in some comment replies, but suga has 100% written, posted, and received commissions from volleyball players to write volleyball RPF. but he only writes about folks who have said they don't care about it. it is the worst-kept secret in the league. everyone thinks miya has read them all, but he swears he hasn't. sakusa has read them all. suna has performed multiple live readings at volleyball parties.

though not all songs i put on my writing playlists can make it into the fic, three that i'm actually bummed i probably won't be able to include are "bruises" by train ft. ashley monroe, "falling slowly" by glen hansard and marketa irglova, and "closer" by joey contreras and brian russel carey.

while this is an au of you've got mail and there are a ton of references to pride and prejudice, this story also ended up having a lot of parallels with the story/musical daddy long legs. both feature characters who fall in love over exchanged messages, with one person aware of who the other is and the other not. i highly recommend listening to it!! yamaguchi references the lyrics to one song, "i have torn you from my heart" ("yes, you've got your freedom, daddy / but you don't have me") when he muses on tsukki's absence in his life ("I have the store. But I don’t have you.") those same lyrics were originally the chapter title for chapter 6.

i also reference the song "the man i'll never be" when tsukishima realizes that yama and yamaguchi are the same person, thinking, "And yet. And yet. Kei could think of nothing more cruel or unkind than leaving Yamaguchi sitting there, alone, waiting for the version of himself Kei pretended to be."

the green sweater yamaguchi wears when he meets tsukishima at bookends is the same one he wears to meet tsukishima in the coffee shop in the world will follow after.

the bokuaka theme for this fic is "stranger" by riley roth.

the kuroken themes for this fic are "right where you left me" and "this love" by taylor swift

tsukkiyama have a theme, but that will be revealed in the epilogue!!!!

Tsukishima fights an intense ler mood at practice one day when he sees Yamaguchi and Nishinoya messing around.

Tsukishima could barely focus during practice that day, and it was all Yamaguchi’s fault.

The blonde barely uttered a word that afternoon, even when his fellow teammates addressed him directly. They figured he was finally taking the game seriously for once, not wanting to get left behind as the rest of them soared to greater heights. But in truth, volleyball was the furthest thing from his mind.

His thoughts - and his heart - were set on his childhood best friend, whose antics that day made it impossible to focus on read blocking, on spiking, on anything. All because of that stupidly infectious laugh of his.

While Tsukishima was taking a quick break, his steely eyes fixated on his freckled friend as he got ready for another round of serving practice. Lately he'd been flopping most of his jump floats, so today he had dedicated almost all of his time to perfecting them. He was working harder than almost anyone else, which earned him Tsukishima’s respect even though he never said it aloud.

However, instead of heading to the court to take his place, Tsukishima saw him walk towards Nishinoya with cheeks ablaze. His ears perked up as he caught the tail end of their conversation, finding it difficult to pull his attention elsewhere.

“Hey, uh… Nishinoya?”

“What's up?”

“Can you… umm… do ‘it’ again?”

Nishinoya tilted his head in confusion, but beamed with joy when he realized what Yamaguchi was asking.

“Ohh, you want me to do ‘it’ to help you relax?”

“Uhm, y... yes, please!”

“Alrighty! Lift up your arms! Hehehe…”

Tsukishima had a gut feeling about what was coming next and turned away before anyone could notice the blush creeping across his own cheeks. 

A couple seconds passed before an all-too familiar laugh rang out through the gymnasium, capturing the attention of all but one blonde haired blocker who refused to look. An unfamiliar emotion swirled in the pit of his stomach, one he couldn't put a name to until much later when the two of them were alone.

“-Aheeheehaha! Gaaaaah!”

“Stop moving around so much! You’re making it difficult!”

“I cahahahahan’t!!”

Their fun was soon interrupted by the team captain, who was less than pleased to see his juniors messing around once again. As soon as the two underclassmen heard Daichi’s stern voice yelling at them from the court, they froze up and stood at attention.

“Stop fooling around you two! Yamaguchi, get out here and serve already!”

“Right! Sorry!!”

The pinch server regained what composure he could before racing out to the court while Nishinoya zoomed over to the other side. Tsukishima watched in disbelief as his friend took a deep breath, got a running start, and then successfully completed a perfect jump float, one that even Nishinoya couldn’t receive. 

So that ‘it’ thing really worked, huh? He tried his best to fight the smile creeping across his face, kicking himself mentally for being so soft. Seeing that unfold before him was so lame, so ridiculous, so undeniably and indisputably...

…adorable.

Nishinoya ran up and gave his teammate a double high five, then poked him in the ribs to throw him off. Yamaguchi doubled over, clutching his sides while his high pitched laughter floated through the air. 

Tsukishima pretended not to notice.

He saw it happen again later, while Yamaguchi was sitting next to Suga on the bench during break. The third year was much more subtle about it, doing sneaky things like poking his side repeatedly and whispering mean teases in his ear. Tsukishima could make out a few words here and there scattered in between Yamaguchi’s tittered giggles. The first year was doing his best to stay quiet, clamping a hand over his mouth while he squirmed in place, probably to save himself the embarrassment. 

Tsukishima glanced over his shoulder, trying not to make it too obvious he was watching.

“...does it tickle here?”

“Pfffft, bahahaha!”

“...here… or what about here…?”

“Eheheheehee! Sugaaaa!”

He couldn’t tell which was worse. Suga’s soft, yet sadistic teasing, or Yamaguchi’s breathless begging. Watching his nose scrunch up, bunching the scattered freckles across his face together while he threw back his head and finally erupted into full blown belly laughs. It was all too much for the middle blocker. In his head, a single sentence repeated itself over and over again like a mantra for the rest of his time at practice, one he couldn’t ignore no matter how much he tried to repress it:

I should be the one getting him.

When the sun began to dip under the horizon, the two of them left the gymnasium together and walked side by side as they headed home, like they always did after practice. Tsukishima was as quiet as ever, still mulling to himself while Yamaguchi tried making small talk. He didn’t really register what he was saying, as his mind was still replaying the scenes from earlier. He was so deep in thought that he barely heard his friend calling his name.

“...Tsukki? Earth to Tsukki! Helloooooo?”

The blonde perked up, finally coming back to reality. Yamaguchi was staring at him with his big, brown eyes, like a puppy dog seeking attention from its master. He thought about the way he squeezed them shut when Nishinoya tickled his sides, and then how sweet his giggles sounded when Suga was poking him. He thought about how much he wanted to hear him laugh like that again, right here, right now.

He couldn’t deny it any longer. He really, really wanted to tickle Yamaguchi.

Without saying a word, Tsukishima slapped the back of his neck and began to give him gentle squeezes. 

“Aaaaaah! Tsukkiiiii!”

Yamaguchi’s reaction was as predictable as always. He raised his arms to try and grab Tsukki’s hands, leaving his midsection wide open for an attack. The middle blocker jabbed into his sides, the corners of his mouth turning up slightly in amusement while Yamaguchi tried to fight the tickles from both ends. It was funny how much those subtle touches affected him. No wonder everyone else on the team enjoyed teasing him so much.

“Are you still spending the night tonight?” He asked, keeping a straight face as he feigned ignorance to Yamaguchi’s suffering.

“Ahahaha! I already said yeahahahaha!”

He gave him a few more rapid squeezes before letting him go. Yamaguchi let out a few more breathy laughs, then immediately started to whine, but it went unnoticed by a brooding Tsukki. He was still unsatisfied, but this little taste was enough to blow him over until they reached his house. Maybe then he’d feel a bit more bold.

As soon as they got back to Tsukishima’s place, they kicked off their shoes and went straight for the couch to watch some stupid TV shows. It was a Friday night, and they basically had the place to themselves since the rest of his family was out of town. Yamaguchi sat on one end of the couch, shoving fistfuls of cheese-itz into his mouth while Tsukishima sat on the other end, looking bored as ever as some dumb cartoon episode played on the screen. In reality, he was using all of his willpower to fight back his embarrassing little urge. His fingers twitched in place, tapping against the arm of the couch incessantly as if relieving pent up energy.

“Hey,” he said after an hour or so of silence.

“Yeah?” Yamaguchi mumbled with a mouthful of cheese.

“What was up with that whole ‘it’ thing earlier,” he asked casually, hoping his curiosity wouldn’t betray him.

“Huh?” Yamaguchi gulped down his cheesy snack. “Oh! You mean…”

He trailed off, the end of his sentence barely audible. Tsukishima noticed a pinkish hue forming on his cheeks as his gaze fell to the floor. It complimented his freckles quite nicely. God, why did he have to be so cute?

“Uh, well… Nishinoya suggested it ‘cause I kept getting nervous, and he said it could help me relax…”

“Uh huh. Did it work?”

“Actually, yeah! I felt like it helped loosen me up.”

“Uh huh.”

There was a brief moment of awkward silence that fell between them before Yamaguchi spoke up again.

“Uh, why do you ask?”

“You know,” Tsukishima said, leaning over his friend who was sprawled out across the cushions. “You can ask me. If you ever want ‘it’.”

“Wha, what?!”

Tsukki grabbed both of his wrists and held them down firmly, with little resistance from the pinch server who stared at him with a dumbfounded look, as if he hadn’t expected this to happen at all. He donned his most convincing poker face, hoping it was enough to mask his nervousness. His heart was beating so fast, it felt like it was climbing up his throat. There was no going back now.

“Tsukki…? What, what are you doing?!”

“Do you like it?”

“...Huh? Like what?”

Tsukki flashed a knowing smirk before he asked his next question.

“Do you like being tickled?”

There it was. He managed to spit it out, after all, as much as he hated saying that word. It looked like it bothered Yamaguchi just as much, who was already writhing beneath him.

“Whahahat?! Me? Wh, why do you ask?!”

He was giving  himself away with his nervous laughter and skittish babbling. Tsukishima hadn’t touched him at all, and he was already so worked up. His smirk turned into a grin as he shuffled the trapped wrists into one hand and hovered the other over his head. 

He was really going to enjoy this.

“You didn’t answer the question.”

Yamaguchi pulled weakly at his trapped arms, not really trying to get away but not surrendering either. He wiggled with what little room he had, and the sight made Tsukishima even more eager to get started. He noticed that the hem of his shirt had ridden up, exposing a bit of his belly button, and snuck his hand underneath so that it rested against his bare skin. It felt warm in his palms, and it twitched a lot just from the slight movement of his hand.

“Ehehehe, Tsukki!! Wait!!”

“Not gonna answer? Mmmk.”

Unable to hold out any longer, Tsukishima wisped the tips of his fingers against Yamaguchi’s stomach. His skin was soft to touch and quivered like jello. The freckly-faced boy squealed loudly, arching his back and pushing himself further into Tsukishima’s hand. The blonde couldn’t help but smile; only he knew how weak his friend was to light tickles, and he was going to exploit that fact for as long as he could.

“Tsukeeheeheehee!! Wahahahahit!!”

“It's really obvious that you like it,” Tsukishima stated matter-of-factly, continuing to spider in a circular motion around his navel. “You were so shy about asking, and you never said stop.” He moved towards his side, raking the entire length of his waist as Yamaguchi shrieked, squirmed, and protested. His torso bounced up and down like he was on a trampoline, contorting himself as much as he could with what little room he had to move. He accidentally brushed against his hip and remembered how bad it was there once Yamaguchi shrieked in ticklish agony.

“Ahahahaha, nghhhh, noHOHOHO NOT THEHEHERE!!”

“Not where? Here? You mean your hips? You’re really weak there, aren’t you?”

Tsukishima proved himself by tickling that hyper-sensitive area, putting his thumb in the crease of his thigh while his other four fingers dug into the side of his hip. Yamaguchi bucked his hips in response, involuntarily trying to shake him off but instead pushing himself further into the blonde’s grip once again. His laughter was bubbly and wild, jumping through multiple octaves until he lost his energy and fell into silent laughter. That’s when Tsukishima knew he was getting to him. He eased up, still stroking the waist of his shorts but at a much slower pace so he could catch his breath.

“Such a big reaction from a little touch,” he whispered, ghosting his fingers up his chest until they reached his collarbones. He fluttered against them with a feather-light touch, relishing Yamaguchi’s small squeaks and flinches. He climbed further, skittering the backs of his nails against his neck while the pinch server shook his head from side to side. He tried fighting back his giggles, but they burst through despite his best efforts.

“NgghhaahAHAHAHAHA! Pleeeeease! Tsukeeheehee!”

Tsukishima moved up to his ears, jumping from one to the other as he nearly tickled his friend to hysterics. Every time he turned his head, he’d just go to the other, making it impossible to shake him off. Yamaguchi was unable to form words, once again succumbing to silent laughter. 

“What’s wrong? Can’t talk? Maybe this will help,” Tsuki poked one of his underarms and nearly got bucked off the couch from how violently Yamaguchi thrashed. After grounding himself a bit more steadily, he focused his efforts on this new spot, poking the center of his pit again and again while his friend convulsed beneath him. Tears pricked the corners of his eyes as he tried hiding his face in one arm, perhaps from shyness or embarrassment. That just made Tsukki poke his other armpit, which elicited another goofy cackle from the trapped server.

He kept it up for several more minutes until Yamaguchi’s face was bright red and his giggles turned into wheezes. Tsukki gave him a few seconds of respite, allowing him to catch his breath before things got too intense. He put his hand on his stomach again and lazily traced random patterns into his trembling skin.

“I don't think it's lame, by the way,” he said, tracing a line from one side to the other while the brunette snickered from the light touch. “You can ask me whenever.”

“Aheeheehee… aha! ...I… I cahahan?”

“Yeah. Just don't be weird about it,” Tsukishima released him at long last, taking a moment to enjoy the blushing, disheveled sight that was Yamaguchi. The guy had curled himself into a ball in case Tsukishima decided to attack again and was still giggling, even now when Tsukki was at least a foot away.

“So… you don’t think I’m lame?” he asked, sounding genuinely concerned about what his friend thought of him. The blonde shrugged his shoulders, acting nonchalant while his insides fluttered like butterflies.

“Nah. You’re a pretty cool guy. I guess.”

Yamaguchi sounded a bit hoarse, so Tsukki went to the kitchen to fetch him a glass of water. He chugged it down so fast he started coughing, and Tsukki rubbed circles in his back until he was breathing normally again. 

“Wait… why were you watching me so much at practice?” the brunette suddenly asked while staring at his friend, who looked quite taken aback from the unexpected question.

“I wasn’t. I just…”

“Hold on! You were jealous, weren’t you? Did you wanna do ‘it’ to me at practice? Did ya? Did ya?” Yamaguchi poked at his friend’s ribs, moreso to annoy him than get a reaction, and luckily the blonde was able to stifle his own vocalization. He slapped away his hand and furrowed his brows in a fake display of annoyance.

“Stop. And how bold of you to assume I was focusing all my attention on you, dummy.”

Seeing him don a shit-eating grin only spurred Tsukki’s irritation on. He felt his own cheeks burn with humiliation now that he’d been discovered. It wasn’t often that Yamaguchi got the best of him, and when he did, he made sure to rub it in as much as he could. 

“Awww, Tsukki!! If you wanna tickle me that bad, you can just ask too!”

“Shut up. And don’t say that. It’s embarrassing. For you, I mean.”

“Hehe, what's the matter Tsukki? Can't say it? You can't say t-EHEHEHEHEE NOOOOOO! Please no I'm sohahahahree!!!”

Yamaguchi spluttered out pleas for mercy through more wild laughter as Tsukki latched onto his sides, tickling with much more ferocity than before. They stayed there for a while longer, just enjoying their closeness now that both of their little secrets were out in the open. Yamaguchi’s laugh rang out like musical notes, filling the house with a wonderful, heartwarming sound.

And for once, Tsukki actually laughed along with him.

I’m really proud of some of my improvements these last few months! This AU has been bouncing around in my head for ages haha so I’m slowly drawing out the story. Maybe one day I’ll properly write it! Also ik it’s unlikely for an air representative to have such fancy clothes but idc yams in flowly robes gives me life uwu also most air nomads have shaved heads but since Tadashi came from the water tribe he wouldn’t be expected to shave it until receiving his airbending mastery tattoos, which he will never receive bc he eventually defects and runs away with Kei before finishing his training. Anywho read on for more details on each piece, tho two are still in progress felt like it would be fun to post some together. Also there is a specific reason why Tsukki carved yams a betrothal necklace and not vice versa

This AU starts in Avatar Roku’s time around 20/25 years before the air nomad genocide. Tadashi and Kei were both born in the Northern Water Tribe and were childhood friends. Kei comes from a very prestigious noble water bending family, a very recognizable one at that with very uncharacteristic fair white or blond hair as a result of a strong spiritual connection central ancestors had, in addition many members are predisposed to having a powerful bond with the moon. They are a very small clan, but very powerful, and they are often found in important occupations like taking care of the spirit oasis. Akiteru is the heir to most of the family’s titles, giving Kei decent leeway to do what he wants, though there are still many expectations as a member of such a traditional clan. He will be expected to be highly educated on local and global affairs and expected to partake in a politically beneficial arranged marriage later in life as is customary in the northern tribe.

Tadashi on the other hand is an only child of a small family of no import. His mother and father ended up working for the Tsukishimas so he was around the place a lot, and being the same age meant the two became fast friends around the age of 7. Tadashi’s earnest goodnatured attitude was a candle to Kei’s more icy exterior. They become really close friends, both pariahs in their own right. Kei could be popular on his family name and his burgeoning waterbending talent, but his rude attitude and disdain for expectations make him disliked but grudgingly respected. Tadashi is derided for his lack of bending and lack of status. Before befriending Tsukki he was often picked on. Finding comfort and understanding in their odd symbiosis, they lived in their own little world.

A huge shock came to their friendship when they were 12, Tadashi discovering his airbending abilities. Turns out his mother was once an air nomad, born and raised, but with fairly weak bending abilities, thus never receiving mastery tattoos, who choose to abandon that life when she fell in love with a water tribe man when a journey threw her off course. Because marrying across nations is very uncommon and slightly stigmatized, especially during the tumultuous decade before the start of the Hundred Years’ War that marked increased division. Thus Tadashi’s mother completely abandoned her old identity in order to fully assimilate into the culture of the Northern Water Tribe and never mentioned it to her son in order to protect him from any additional scorn of being the result of a internation couple. Since her airbending abilities were so weak and her husband was a non bender she figured it would never be important.

Quite a shock when Tadashi’s abilities suddenly bloom at 12, fairly late for bending to manifest but likely a result of not growing up amidst the spirituality of air nomad culture that is so essential to airbending practices. Some sort of minor public spectatcle occurs due to Tadashi’s uncontrolled new abilities, leading to the tribe’s leadership demanding he be sent to the northern air temple to become an air bender. Another result of expectations for a harsh division between nations due to the polarization of the Fire Nation’s aggressive actions leading up to the hundred year war. Kei is upset because his only true friend is leaving and does what he does best and decides to get icy and push him away. Tadashi is terrified to leave behind the only culture and family he has ever known to go to a completely new place, and he is hurt. They leave on these complicated feelings. Kei continues his waterbending training and his studies full force to avoid his feelings, and a complex relationship with his brother and family further drive him to avoid expanding his social circle as expectations loom. Tadashi travels to the air temple and is very nervous about the whole thing. Determined to move on and make the best of things, Tadashi is pleasantly suprised by the fun loving nature of the air nomads. He quickly bonds to his mentor Shimada, and becomes fast friends with fellow new air apprentices, Hinata from the Fire Nation and Yachi from the Earth Kingdom, who also discovered a hidden nomad heritage when their bending abilities bloomed. Tadashi trains, and while he is no bending genius he works hard to improve. He pays particular attention to his studies and this makes him a prime candidate for later diplomatic missions as tensions worsen between the four nations.

The Party:

This is the earliest chronologically, basically representing the first meeting Yamaguchi and Tsukishima have after many years apart. After 6 long years Kei and Tadashi meet again when a diplomatic convoy of air nomads is sent to the Northern Tribe. There is a big party with diplomats from each nation. This is about 7 years before the start of the war. The fire nation is there on formality and treated with the most distrust while the other three nations are fairly friendly and willing to let loose with each other. (The fire nation convoy will consist of some other characters, possibly Kageyama and Oikawa? Still working that out) I’m thinking that Asahi and Daichi might be an earth kingdom princes with bodyguards Noya and Tanaka, who become good friends with waterbender Suga. The diplomatic trip is meant to last around 8 months. Anyway this drawing is meant to represent Yamaguchi and Tsukishima’s first meeting at 18 after so many years. Fancy clothes, endless formalities, both considering the other insanely attractive... and they are both drawn in by each other’s familiarity and confidence. This is the first spark of something new between the witty remarks and coy glances. They have no clue what hit them.

First Kiss

Jumping ahead of a lot of yearning... I mean truly a ridiculous amount of dancing around each other for maybe 3 months they finally kiss. Complicated by the impending arrangement of Tsukishima’s marriage to another prestigious young waterbender, Kiyoko, who Tsukishima greatly respects but is in no way attracted to. They keep their blooming romance a passionate secret to prevent political disaster for the nomads and Tsukki’s family. It’s really hard for them to keep their hands off of each other and there are plenty of close calls. There is some jealousy on both sides due to the uncertainties of their relationship. Yamaguchi discovers a betrothal necklace Kei is carving and is painfully reminded of the marriage expectation. Luckily both make strong connections to new friends and slowly their relationship becomes known to this close circle. For a bit they worry about what would happen if Kiyoko finds out, but later they discover her affair with the earth kingdom bodyguard Tanaka so she gets it.

The Proposal

wrote this out and then tumblr didn’t save it so y’all get the quick version bc it is almost 7 am and no I have not slept. Now they are in the Northern Air temple for the tail end of the diplomatic mission. Kei carved the necklace for Yamaguchi, not Kiyoko as he had assumed. In a secluded garden on the island Kei proposes to Yamaguchi with the betrothal necklace. Though made for and worn by women, their relationship already defied infinite traditions and Kei knew how much it would mean for Tadashi to have their relationship carved into stone. They agree to run away to be together after wrapping up the diplomatic mission. Then more stuff happens I have not gotten to yet lol. There will def be a lot of side ships. If anyone has any ideas for side ship plot lines def come chat! I’d love to hear if ppl like this AU idea

“Yeah, Tsukki?” Yamaguchi looked up towards the bed and unexpectedly made eye contact with Tsukishima. He expected to see him peering down towards his phone or reading one of the books scattered across his room; he wasn’t particularly expecting to have Tsukishima peering directly at him. How long had he just been watching him? Yamaguchi immediately shifted his gaze back towards his game, a slight blush dusting his cheekbones. 

“Have you done anything besides play that game?” Tsukishima raised an eyebrow while he subconsciously shifted his body towards Yamaguchi. 

“Tsukki, you don’t understand. I’ve been waiting for this game to be released for two years, and now that I have it, of course I’m going to want to play it!” 

“I just don’t understand the hype. You’re just some random mayor-”

“Resident representative.”

“Of some town-”

“Island.”

“And all you do is catch fish, bugs, and dig yourself further into crippling debt to a raccoon... How is that even fun?” 

“Tom Nook is an honest business man and doesn’t even charge interest on his loans!” Yamaguchi playfully raised his voice, a laugh trailing at the end. “But here, let me show you.” Yamaguchi untucked his legs from underneath him and lifted himself from his boyfriend’s desk chair. He promptly sat on the bed and found his way into Tsukishima’s lap. “So first, here is what my town looks like!” Yamaguchi tilted the screen so Tsukishima could easily view it without craning his neck at odd angles to see around the boy in his lap. Subconsciously and without realization, Tsukishima wrapped his arms around the other boy and linked his hands together on Yamaguchi’s stomach, not even noticing he had vaguely pulled him closer as he rested his chin on his shoulder. Displayed on the screen was a character with a wide smile, oval nose, big brown eyes, and shaggy messy brown hair. “I had to timeskip to unlock that hairstyle,” Yamaguchi explained despite the lack of questioning. Tsukishima quirked an eyebrow only to remember his boyfriend could not see his face, so instead he clicked his teeth with a brief ‘tch’. To anyone else, it may have come across as vague annoyance, but Yamaguchi knew the subtleties in his body language and voice too well after spending the past seven years or so by his side and knew it was just a confirmation that he was listening. 

“It’s true! Apparently you unlock the ‘bedhead’ style after not playing for, like, a week,  so I skipped forward and back again to get it since it’s the closest to my hairstyle.”

“Ah,” was all the other boy replied. Yamaguchi pushed the left joy-con stick as his character began to move around. He talked as he showed his boyfriend the cobblestone streets he had designed and placed, the layout he so expertly figured out after spending way too many bells and hours to count, and briefly showed the villagers he had accumulated. 

Finally, he stopped outside the museum. “I thought you’d find this the most interesting, Tsukki!”

“And why’s that?”

“You’ll see!” Yamaguchi softly giggled to himself, vaguely teasing. He walked into the museum, and the screen briefly went black as the game loaded. Yamaguchi smiled to himself, turned his head to the side, and left a brief kiss on the corner of the other boy’s mouth. He saw the blonde briefly role his eyes, but the slight pink on his cheeks was unmistakable. Yamaguchi smiled and turned back towards his game.

“Who’s that?” the blonde mumbled.

“Oh!” Yamaguchi said, “That’s Blathers! He’s the museum curator. He really loves dinosaurs and fossils.” 

“He has good taste.”

“I figured you’d appreciate that.”

Tsukishima hummed in response. Yamaguchi continued to explain every bug and fish he had caught up to that point. Despite the lack of direct confirmation of interest, he continued to ramble knowing that, despite his boyfriend’s exterior of indifference, he was contently listening. 

Suddenly, Yamaguchi stopped talking, and Tsukishima noticed they had made it back to the main entrance of the museum.

“And I’m assuming this concludes the tour-”

“Nope! I’ve saved the best for last.” Yamaguchi flashed a smile as he made his way towards the back of the museum and entered the fossil section. 

That’s a-”

“Oh look, a trilobite. That’s pretty neat. I didn’t know you could dig up fossils in this game.” Tsukishima cut off Yamaguchi.

“I figured you’d find this the most interesting, Tsukki.”

“Shut up, Yamaguchi.” The smaller boy stuck his tongue out in retaliation, causing the other to roll his eyes as he tried to stop the vague smile from appearing on his face.

“Tsukki, you should tell me about these fossils and such.” He paused. “I mean- only if you’d like.”

“Shut up, Yamaguchi.” he mumbled as he planted a chaste kiss on his neck.

Yamaguchi smiled. “Here, you should control the character so it’s easier.” He placed the Switch onto his lap as he unhooked Tsukishima’s arms from around his waist and had him grip the controller. He leaned back and nestled into his boyfriend’s chest and let out a content sigh. Tsukishima rolled his eyes but, again, couldn’t help but smile.

“Well this is a trilobite. They could be smaller than a millimeter or even bigger than 70cm.” Tsukishima hesitated before moving the character, but soon continued to explain the other fossils in the first room. Soon, he was making his way into the second room. 

“That’s an archelon over there. ‘Archelon’ actually means ‘ruling turtle’ and they were about...three and a half meters long. And then across from it is a Diplodocus which is...missing a piece of it’s torso…”

“I haven’t been able to find it yet!” 

“Anyways, they were around 26m long. They’re actually the longest dinosaur we’ve found with a near complete skeleton. It’s possible other dinosaurs might be longer, such as the Supersaurus, but it’s hard to estimate since we haven’t found enough of a skeleton yet. Diplodocus was also probably one of the slower, if not slowest, dinosaurs because of how far back the center of gravity was since they were so long.

“And then, over here is obviously a T-Rex. One thing that’s sort of interesting and cool I guess is that they may have practiced cannibalism.”

“Tsukki, I think we have different definitions of what constitutes ‘cool’.”

“Oh? And what, Yamaguchi, would you say is ‘cool’?”

Yamaguchi hummed in contemplation, sarcastically placing his hand on his chin in a mockery of thinking. “Well… I guess I’d have to say… That one thing I think is cool is…” Yamaguchi trailed off.

“Please, Yamaguchi, the suspense is killing me.” Tsukishima retorted dryly. Yamaguchi laughed softly in response. 

“You.”

“What?”

“I think that you would constitute as cool.” Yamaguchi smiled, obviously very proud of himself.

“Oh my god.” Tsukishima groaned as he buried his head in the other's shoulder, hiding the fact he was vaguely flustered.

“Aw, I can’t believe I flustered the one and only cool and stoic Tsukishima Kei.” Yamaguchi laughed again. “And people are intimidated by you.”

“Shut up, Yamaguchi.” Tsukishima mumbled, scowling into his shoulder.

“Sorry, Tsukki.” Yamaguchi couldn’t help but continue to laugh, but unbeknownst to him, his laughter just continued to fluster his boyfriend more. “Tsukki,” he playfully whined. The only response received was a grumble and the warmth of his boyfriend’s breath on his shoulder. Yamaguchi turned his head once more and placed a kiss to the side of the blonde’s head. 

“Okay, come on. Please continue, I’m having fun listening to these facts.” He raised his shoulder in an attempt to get Tsukishima to move. He sighed in response and continued, only pausing to place soft kisses on Yamaguchi whenever he had the urge to.
