Designing Interactions with the Earth from Interaction Design Association on Vimeo.
When we take in the number and magnitude of threats to the survival of humans as well as countless other species, the future looks grim. As we view the array of disruptions and disasters coming at us in the rush of climate change, we are apt to lose ourselves in resignation and grief. How can we find anything positive to guide us? How might we invoke technology and agency in ways that promote healing of the earth and of ourselves? In this time of daunting challenges, what does successful transformation look like? And how can designers be part of such transformations?
Brenda often reminds design students that “We can’t design from despair.” A corollary is: “hope is an active verb.” In the developments and inventions examined in this talk, we will see how hope is an essential ingredient. That doesn’t mean that everything has to be a success. When design ideas don’t work as we’d imagined, we reflect on our “interesting failures” and learn. And then we move on.
How does the planet feed 8 billion people in the face of the pollution and habitat destruction caused by industrial farming of plants and animals? How might we reframe “conservation” as restoration? How might we attenuate plastic pollution and keep fast fashion out of landfills? How can we address the drivers of deforestation? How might we design and engineer methods for slowing glacial melt and atmospheric heating? There are innovative and promising answers to those questions bubbling up in the minds of designers, scientists, engineers, and transdisciplinary teams all over the world. Brenda’s keynote will review some of those efforts, identify what they have in common, and explore how we might employ those commonalities as heuristics for designing positive interactions with the Earth.

LIAFF SPECIAL #13: Ari Aster - Fra pazzia e surrealismo
"New Mexico kid": chi è Ari Aster?
Ari Aster nasce il 15 Luglio 1986 a New York City.
Il cast, annunciato a Luglio 2018, comprendeva Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, Will Poulter, William Jackson Harper, Vilhem Blomgren, Ellora Torchia e Archie Madekwe.
Beau is Afraid: un'odissea surreale

Artist Research #6
Artists: John Willis
Name: "Recycled realities" (2006)
Date: 2006
Size: 9 x 11 inches
Medium: photography
Published in 2006 by Center for American Places, inc. Santa Fe, New Mexico 87502, USA.
John Willis received his RI master of fine arts degree in photography from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1984. John began his professional career as a professor in the same college. Later on, he continued teaching photography in various schools like Harvard University. John has supported the world of photography significantly, and a clear example of that is his act as co-founder of the In-sight Photography Project (an organization that offers free photography courses). A few of John's standout works include "Recycled Realities: Views From the Reservation," "Views from the Reservation," "Mni Wiconi - Water Is Life: Honoring the Water Protectors at Standing Rock and Everywhere in the Ongoing Struggle for Indigenous Sovereignty," and "Aging in White."
Awards:
Some of his important awards include the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial, Foundation Fellowship in Photography (2011), and 2019 Gold Medal for Best Regional Book from Foreword Indies with work "Mini Wiconi: Water is Life; Honoring the Water Protectors at Standing Rock and Everywhere in the Ongoing Struggle for Indigenous Sovereignty" and Open Society Institute Community Engagement Grant.
Physical description of the work:
The book has a hard cover to ensure durability. It is approximately 9 x 11 inches, and the cover design features related to the theme. The interior consists of high-quality photographs printed on thick Glossy paper. The layout balances images accompanying them with text. Overall, it is a well-crafted, visually appealing book with a messy but intriguing cover and black color.
I was carried away by appearances when choosing this book. When I saw this black book with an intriguing cover, I thought it could be a good selection. After reading a little of the content, it was confusing to understand the work, but it left me with a great reflection on our waste. Since recycling interests me, it got me thinking about the stories on paper, the life they once had, and the life they will have. After all, I liked just seeing the photographs: direct but simultaneously complicated since it was difficult to understand the shapes. Somehow, it was nice watching trash transform into something aesthetic and pleasant.

A woman's body was discovered in a car trunk, and a man was arrested.
A man, Matthew Switalski, was arrested for murder after a woman's body was found in the trunk of a burned vehicle in Lancaster. The suspect, Switalski, is the owner of the home where the victim, Veronica Aguilar, 27, was found. The two were believed to be dating at one point. On December 20, emergency crews responded to a fire burning at a home in the 41400 block of 38th Street West. Heavy smoke and fire came from the garage, and two charred vehicles were found inside, along with Aguilar's body in the trunk of a car. Switalski was later determined to be a suspect in the woman's death and was taken into custody on murder charges. The events leading up to Aguilar's death remain unclear as authorities continue investigating the case. It's unfortunate; may she rest in peace as justice is served.

that post about for-profit colleges is absolutely true, i went to a for-profit art school and graduated and now it’s closing, after basically failing in all it’s promises to almost everyone after charging ridiculous amounts for tuition. i worked extremely hard to get my degree despite numerous set-backs the school would not address (bad on-campus therapy, a thriving rape culture, favoritism and elitism in departments).
I am truly impressed (and a bit jealous) of the people who could really make it work after going to my school, they were working for themselves and focusing on their goals!

Audio
4/25/20.
I’m going to immediately give credit to Mariana Timony (Bandcamp) for highlighting this in their “Weekly Essential Releases” on 4/24. I really don’t know what to say about Brendan Eder. He is classical, pop, new-age (there are parts of this release that could belong on a Windham Hill release), and indie all at the same time. And I know I’m prone to hyperbole and comparison, but I challenge anyone to see another release like this in our bandcampsnoop history (use hashtags). I had a short email interview with him and he said that, “I went to a small liberal arts school called Santa Fe University of Art & Design. There I was able to stuy recording, basic composition and orchestration and play in a math rock group called Emergency Room.”
Brendan Eder could somehow make William Tell’s Overture sound like pop. He can also out chamber-pop Sufjan Stevens. He makes David Byrne sound like an amateur composer (and this is coming from someone who adores David Byrne and will always tout his “Music for the Knee Plays”). This is really that good. Honestly, I can’t imagine that someone as talented as Neil Hannon (the Divine Comedy, The Duckworth-Lewis Method) wouldn’t look at this and say, “Wow...I wish I had made this album”. In our email interview Brendan said this of his influences: “The music is inspired by early 20th century classical music, Miles Davis, Aphex Twin, [Antonio Carlos] Jobim, Fugazi, Dave Brubeck, Les Baxter, and hip hop.
Brendan Eder’s career is just starting. He is a Los Angeles, California based musician who has corralled the likes of Colleen Green (”The Spirit of”).
I rarely say this, but I sincerely feel like I’m witnessing a musical genius. I’m just not sure which genre he will consistently display his genius in.

Welp I got into me dream school, then they suspended the entire freshman class because of finance troubles and management. I also don't have a backup. FUCKING GREAT SPRING BREAK YOU GUYS. FUCKING GREAT WEEK FOR ME. Thanks Santa fe university of art and design. Thanks for letting me taste my dreams for a solid month. (It was probably that or close the school next year but I still have the right to be angry. Also they sent a list of colleges that will give processing priority to the rejected students.
