Day 4: House Stark

Arya, the lone wolf, still lived, but the wolves of the pack had been taken and slain and skinned.

there’s something so special to me about the casual intimacy (both physical and emotional) of the stark family. robb carrying bran to his horse. bran holding robb’s hand to comfort him. jon ruffling arya’s hair and pushing her around and her laughing and pushing him right back. ned hugging sansa and arya in front of the entire king’s court. they’re always thinking about each other and missing each other. the kids cry and fight and play and are kids, and ned and catelyn are kind to one another, and it’s beautiful. it’s so warm, so human, in contrast with the coldness of other familial relationships in the book.

one egregious thing the game of thrones show misses out on is that the stark kids are CONSTANTLY thinking abt each other!! there isn’t like a single POV chapter from any of them where they don’t long for their siblings!! Jon wants to have a son and name him Robb!! Bran wants to be a bird so him and his siblings can live in a nest together!! Sansa prays for her siblings every night and makes the Winterfell castle and then gets upset bc there’s no one to throw snow at!! Needle IS Jon!! Arya’s list is her own prayer for her siblings, she doesn’t care that Joffrey is dead bc Robb is too!! Every single one of them believes that their big brother will come to save them!! there’s sm love and tenderness there and GOT missed out on lots of it bc it tries too hard for the grimdark angle without realising that the center of the stark’s story is their love for each other. anyways.

Bran's love for climbing is well known to his family way before the his "accident" happens. The passage below beautifully demostrates how powerful Bran feels while participating on this favourite activity of his:

The rooftops of Winterfell were Bran's second home. His mother often said that Bran could climb before he could walk. Bran could not remember when he first learned to walk, but he could not remember when he started to climb either, so he supposed it must be true. [...] When he got out from under it and scrambled up near the sky, Bran could see all of Winterfell in a glance. He liked the way it looked, spread out beneath him, only birds wheeling over his head while all the life of the castle went on below. Bran could perch for hours among the shapeless, rain-worn gargoyles that brooded over the First Keep, watching it all: the men drilling with wood and steel in the yard, the cooks tending their vegetables in the glass garden, restless dogs running back and forth in the kennels, the silence of the godswood, the girls gossiping beside the washing well. It made him feel like he was lord of the castle, in a way even Robb would never know.

AGOT, BRAN II

None of his siblings shows the same interest in climbing. However, it's interesting that when two of his siblings are forced to climb (Jon in ACOK, Sansa in ASOS) they bring their little brother in their mind.

First we have Jon, who after joining Halfhand's team beyond the Wall, has to scale the Skirling Pass in order to capture some free folk enemies.

Jon doesn't enjoy climbing on such a harrowing enviroment and draws strength from the memory of his brother who he considers so much braver than him.

Up they went, and up, and up, black shadows creeping across the moonlit wall of rock. Anyone down on the floor of the pass could have seen them easily, but the mountain hid them from the view of the wildlings by their fire. They were close now, though. Jon could sense it. Even so, he did not think of the foes who were waiting for him, all unknowing, but of his brother at Winterfell. Bran used to love to climb. I wish I had a tenth part of his courage.

ACOK, JON VI

On Asos, when Sansa is leaving King's Landing, she has to climb down a cliff in order to escape.

At first, she's afraid of the prospect because if Bran who always loved climbing had an accident, what are the chances of her who never climbed before to make it?

"We must climb down," Ser Dontos said. "At the bottom, a man is waiting to row us out to the ship." "I'll fall." Bran had fallen, and he had loved to climb.

ASOS, SANSA V

In the end, she agrees out of necessity.
