Sort of an odd month, lots of series and music, but slow on movies and books.

Andor - Season 01 (2022-)

It took many months to finish this and I don’t regret forcing myself to continue it, the third act is truly something unique. I think my problem with this was that it was the wrong moment for, it demands a sort of concentration and ability to follow that I didn’t have at the time, and now I believe I didn’t know enough about the lore of Star Wars to fully understand it.

The Lying Life of Adults (2023)

This was my least favorite Elena Ferrante novel and this adaptation made me see these characters and situations differently.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2017-2023)

I don’t know how to say goodbye to this series, it made me feel so much. I’m glad we got a beautiful final season, where the end was present in every episode, we got to see the after and the before while living in the moments that change everything for her. Precious.

Ted Lasso (2020-2023)

While not as perfect of an ending as Mrs. Maisel, still a good time to end something that was nearly perfect. When you start Ted Lasso you don’t assume that it’s going to be a series about love, acceptance, and understanding until it punches you in the face and you are left with so much love to give in return.

Sanditon (2019-2023)

They did what they could with an unfinished Jane Austen novel and had to build an entirely different series after the two romantic interests of the main lady left after season one. It’s good that they choose to wrap it up as they could, focusing on the characters' growth.

Servant (2019-2023)

I’m thankful that this ended so greatly, season 03 slowed things down for me, so much so that it took me a while to watch the final season. They ended with all the elements that made me enjoy this narrative so much, sometimes even playing with our expectations, but with an ending that ties back to where it all started. We need to go through all the horror to understand grief.

Queer Eye - Season 07 (2018-)

I love them but they missed the point with a few episodes, there were so moments that I think Karamo especially went too hard at the hero, confronting when he clearly should be directing the person to a therapist. And an episode where everybody wanted the hero to change to be a better boyfriend and just not see how much he needed help with his self-image. It left me with a bad taste in my mouth, we kind of forget how wrong it is to make people’s real life into entertainment

I would have loved this as a teen. I still love it as an adult, but I don't think I'm the target demographic for it. Teens deserve love stories that are complex and horror filled. Enough with the easy dumb stuff.

Saint Maud (2019)  Directed by Rose Glass

Morfydd Clark -  Jennifer Ehle

This the kind of horror movie I love, quiet and unassuming, that has something to say about a lot of things and still makes things tense and breathtaking.

While it deals with a delicate subject, it does so with care and understanding.

Ranking of "SANDITON" Season One (2019) Episodes

Below is my ranking of the Season One episodes from "SANDITON", the ITV adaptation of Jane Austen's unfinished novel. Adapted by Andrew Davies, the limited series starred Rose Williams and Theo James:

RANKING OF "SANDITON" SEASON ONE (2019) EPISODES

1. (1.05) "Episode 5" - Tensions between the Sanditon resort creator Tom Parker and his laborers erupt during the Sanditon cricket match. Tom's guest and younger brother, Charlotte Heywood and Sidney Parker continue to clash, resulting in Sidney's ward, Miss Georgiana Lambe in terrible danger.

2. (1.02) "Episode 2" - Following their initial hostile encounter in the previous episode, Charlotte and Sidney clash again. Tensions surround Georgiana's arrival in Sanditon.

3. (1.06) "Episode 6" - Both Charlotte and Sidney arrive in London to find the abducted Georgiana. They begin to view each other in a new light.  Tom's financial benefactress, Lady Denham, falls gravely ill.

4. (1.04) "Episode 4" - The arrival of Otis Molyneux, Georgiana's forbidden love, causes Charlotte to question her opinion of Sidney. Meanwhile, Lady Denham's poor relation, Clara Brereton, witnesses a moment between Lady Denham's nephew by marriage, Sir Edward Denham and his stepsister, Esther Denham.

5. (1.01) "Episode 1" - A chance accident leads Tom and his wife Mary Parker to invite Charlotte to the former's seaside resort at Sanditon.

6. (1.07) "Episode 7" - As the Sanditon summer regatta approaches, Sidney wrestles with his feelings towards old flame Eliza Campion. The young builder James Stringer reveals his true feelings to Charlotte. With Lady Denham at death's door, the tensions between Edward, Clara and Esther finally come to a head - with surprising consequences.

7. (1.08) "Episode 8" - Romantic interests are finally resolved during the night of the Midsummer Ball, romantic interests are finally resolved. The fate of Sanditon is at stake when events conspire to leave Charlotte and the Parker family facing impossible choices.

8. (1.03) "Episode 3" - Charlotte sets out to avoid Sidney, until a serious accident forces them together, and to reappraise each other. When Tom brings a new doctor to the town, he and Lady Denham clash; while Clara makes a bold move in her bid to outplay Edward and Esther.

I remember everything: Life lessons from Dawson’s Creek by Erin Hensley and Julia Callahan [This is very readable and conversational in style, if a bit judgy at times. Spot on about Dawson being the worst. Best when giving the love to Pacey and Joey.

Buffy the Vampires Slayer: Season 8 - (The Long Way Home, No Future for You, Wolves at the Gate, Time of Your Life, Predators and Prey, Retreat, Twilight, Last Gleaming). [Good on the re-read although the issues with it being too OTT remain. It does have some excellent moments. (The opening arc, the chain), I get why it was the case, but Spike takes too long to be bought into the story and I still don’t get why you-know-who became Twilight.]

Buffy the vampire slayer: myth, metaphor & morality by Mark Field - [its a good read. A blog put into book form. It probably really needed some editing to make it more 'bookish' and fix all the "no spoilers" nonsense. But he has a good perspective on the show and i even learnt a couple of new things. For the price, highly recommended]

Buffy meets the Academy: essays on the episodes and scrips as texts edited by Kevin K. Durand

Coraline by Neil Gaiman - short, sweet in a lightly terrorfying kind of way. Cats don't need names because they know who they are.

Sweet Dreams: The story of the new romantics by Dylan Jones - very wordy, over-written (if a huge tome of mostly third-party quotes can count as being over-written), and lacking in focus. it tries to tell the story of the New Romantic era and the significant influence it had on music in the 1980s, but the use of quotes (680 pages of them!) and the overlapping (and sometimes contradictory) reminisences from a long cast of participants is a hard slog.

The Outlaws Scarlett & Browne by Jonathan Stroud - a very readable opening book of a new series. It's fast-paced, page-turner fantasy/dystopian story set in a wild Britain after some kind of catastrophe (that is not explained). Scarlett and Albert are an interesting pair, very different from one another and both with largely unexplored backstories. There is much more to explore in subsequent books.

The Sad Ghost by Lize Meddings - not my cup of tea. I get what it was trying to do re anxiety and such but I just thought the execution was really off and the message wrong?

The Boys Club by by Michael Warner - so good. a must for every AFL fan. Great game, shame about the corrupt, controlling, power hungry people that run it. The only hope is a future CEO that believes in the separation of powers, transparent governance and a genuine love of the game.

Sword of Destiny by Andrzej Sapkowski - another good read in the Witcher series, much of which is featured in the first season of The Witcher (Netflix), I did get a bit confused at times but it all comes together for a ripper of an ending.

One of us is lying - by ?? - fast paced, multi-perspective that is engrossing and intreaguing. Loved it!

One of us is next - by ?? - not as good as the original sequel to one if us is lying. Its over-written and never overcomes the fact that its not about the original bayview 4. Disappointing.

Sylvester (or the Wicked Uncle) by Georgette Heyer. The best book. I love this one so much. Read it every year. Never gets old. Perfection.

The Blood of Elves by Andrzej Sapkowski - Very good! Inspired by season 2 of the Witcher to pick the series back again and very impresses with the translation to screen. Very readable and so good to get to know the characters more closely.
