The Ink Demonth 2023 - Day 12. Angel

Day 12. Angel Crossover: W.I.T.C.H. (comics) This could be true, if it weren't for the fact that Joey is probably canonically gay (but I'm not sure if it's a fact).

And now a bit of history. Comics W.I.T.C.H. in Poland were published for about ten years from 2002 and were extremely important to me. I bought this newspaper from the first to the last issue - I skipped maybe 3-4 issues when I was on vacation and couldn't find a shop that had the current press (I'll fill these holes someday). For me, this series was extremely important and played a big role for many reasons - firstly, it was how I learned to draw human figures and my style still somewhat resembles the style of W.I.T.C.H. Secondly - reading this comic coincided with the moment when I first started to suffer from depression and reading about magic, about friendship that works and that friends don't stab you in the back - made it easier for me to cope with reality. Finally, thirdly - I was then very into magic and I was looking for it in a more interesting form than the one presented in Harry Potter (where magic, by the way, is very boring and monothematic). In each issue, apart from the next part of the comics, there were interesting horoscopes from different parts of the world, methods of fortune telling and interesting facts about various magical things. This was the beginning of my collection of myths, spells, creatures and magical plants. But then the comic stopped being published, and then that nasty French series came out, which is one big abomination - and I completely forgot about W.I.T.C.H. for many, many years... But then, some time ago, my dad, who was cleaning out my old room (where he has his "office"), found a huge pile of my magazines and decided to bring them to me - among them were all my issues of W.I.T.C.H. magazine. When my daughter saw it, she was immediately delighted and asked if I could read it to her. Reading comics is difficult and unattractive to the listener, so I thought she would get boring quickly - but no... we're halfway through the first saga (about Merdian) and Ursa keeps asking for more. And when I read it to her, I take a sentimental journey back to my childhood, I'm moved again by the stories, I laugh at the jokes, I discover that I look at the characters differently, but like them the same, although for completely different things.

That's why I decided to include such an important element that made me who I am now in this year's Ink Demonth - and the slogan Angel seemed more than appropriate. Interestingly, the previous entry also fit here, and in order to include the Phantom of the Opera, I had to find another place for it, because - yes - it lost to W.I.T.C.H. However, this inconspicuous comic book for teenagers had a greater impact on me, my character, interests and who I am today - than the musical I saw several years ago or the book I read only this year. Sad but true.

I must admit that I had fun drawing and colouring this. And if someone asks: my favourite character is Will - not only because she is redhead and is (like me) a Capricorn, but many threads from her story were similar to mine. This hasn't changed. However, today I look more kindly at Cornelia, whom I once disliked, and a little less favorably at Irma, whom I once liked very much (the way she treats Martin at the beginning is terrible). While drawing them, I realized how unfairly Hay Lin is treated - her guardian outfit is the worst and least highlights her charms. However, after upgrading the outfits, she gains the most, while Cornelia's and Will's outfits are terrible. By the way, Taranee, what did they do to your hair, tell me? By the way, it was even fun to do something similar to the SATIM comic - was this comic always so electric yellow? It was very difficult for me to adapt to this...

Linnn thank you for your questions and don’t apologize for rambling! We’re in the same funky hyperfixation boat, so you can imagine how thrilled I was to wake up to so many questions in my inbox!!

Let’s get into it :p

1. Fav characters (teen/adult timeline)

For the teen timeline, I’ve said it before: it’s Lottie. Always my perfect angel, my complex girl with a tiny disorder, my cutesy axe murderer. On a serious note, I love her character on so many levels, and Courtney is so incredibly talented. My love for her only grew in S3—oh dear…

Also, a close favorite is definitely Mari (what a shame).

Now for the adult timeline… that’s a little tricky. My gut instinct is to go with Misty, because let’s be real, she’s carrying the story, both with her comedy and her genius. My girl is singlehandedly moving the plot forward … Her development is amazing to watch 2.

However, I really really enjoyed adult Taissa in season 1, back when she still had the politician/divorce era going on. And I could never forget Van. She adds so much to the adult timeline. I think making her a survivor is one of the best things the writers ever did tbh. While I do have some criticisms about her storyline, I’m actually in love with Lauren, so I won’t say any more.

2. Opinion on Shauna

I meaaaan. Oh man. I really can’t defend her anymore… but I still love her. Could never hate her. At this point she could kill all the girls in cold blood and I’d be like…. Remember when she literally looked at us and asked why we couldn’t hear her baby cry? Yeah, that’ll do it for me every time.

She’s traumatized, probably deep in PPD that maybe never left. She really gets on my nerves in the adult timeline specifically, but hey. Could never forget what happened to her. She’s also super interesting from a character standpoint!

3. LottieNat vs MistyNat vs TravNat

Oh Natalie, my lovable, shippable baby.

I’ll be quick with this:

LottieNat – Surprisingly, I’m not really into it. Maybe in the adult timeline, but meh. (sorry majority of the fandom)

MistyNat – Good, good soup. Adult timeline, season 1, really confirmed this for me. So much potential.

TravNat – Yes. Their relationship makes me cry. Teen timeline has so much angst for them, which I eat up. They truly deserve each other.

4. Transfem/nb Travis

“The shrooms made him gay” I’m crying.

I mean, hey.. everyone can headcanon what they want. I don’t really see it, simply because I think his masculinity was such a big part of his plotline.

However, he is a pretty princess, so please go ahead.

5. Storyline/plot point I wish was explored more

Pff, sadly there are a lot, and S3 just made it worse. But I’m gonna go with my favorite and I think the fandom agrees:

Taissa’s entire storyline.

I’ve been rewatching with my sister, and it hit me again how amazing her setup was in season 1. She was truly my favorite to watch. She had all these things going for her: the senator plot, sleepwalking, creepy sacrifices, divorce era, and Sammy. They really set it all up and then… well, they just made her revolve around Van.

I was happy to see she was still leaning into the “sacrifice for Van” thing in season 3, but mhhhhh Other Tai was handled so poorly. That scene where she talks to Other Tai? It was so corny when it could’ve been so interesting 😭

6. Favorite/least favorite death

Okay. Least favorite, this one’s widely agreed on, Lottie and Nat.

The adult timeline deaths were really, really weak. Both characters had so much more to offer, and it was a huge mistake to write off these insanely talented actresses.

Natalie’s death felt so meaningless. like, an accident?? A fucking overdose?? That’s actually sick.

And Lottie… it felt like they only killed her off so the other adults had something to do. The reactions were lacking, and while Callie being her murderer was a good idea, the scene should’ve been way longer. At least Lottie seemed at peace in the end. My poor Angel.

Now maybe this contradicts everything I’ve ever said, but my favorite death as of late is Van’s. Not because I wanted her to die, obviously, but because the scene was so aesthetically perfect and just… ugh.. it fit.

Yes, Van would get stabbed and bleed out slowly on the floor after saving the love of her life and a friend, because she couldn’t kill Melissa while Radiohead plays.

Of course Van would survive the plane crash, fire, wolves, possibly cancer—and die because she’s too kind.

I’ve been meaning to talk about her plane scene too!! So much to analyze..

The episode was recorded on 24 September, before the death of Gavin Creel. The hosts are Andrew Chappelle, who worked with Jonathan on Hamilton, and Cody Rigsby. Highlights:

Jonathan talks about Cody Smith, his first boyfriend, and says they are still close. They met during 'Bat Boy' and Cody is six years older. "And I love him."

Jonathan talked about his plans to transform '& Sons Steakeasy' (currently a restaurant) back into the gay bar where Barbra Streisand first sang (previously discussed in an interview). He would change the name of the restaurant to 'The Lion' (its original name) and make the upstairs a gay bar and call it BARbra. He has never met Barbra.

Cody talks about meeting Ru Paul that day. Jonathan says he would love to be on Drag Race. He also said he was with Cody (a Peloton instructor) 'on' the bike, crying, during Covid "you are a light".

Jonathan went on a silent meditation retreat after 'Merrily We Roll Along' closed. He has now done three Vipassana meditation reteats in Quebec, Lava Hot Springs Idaho and Massachusetts and gave up his phone for the duration. "With your breath, your demons, a lot of things and yourself... giving shared bathrooms and roommates... The presence you get from being silent, and just with your breath all day is kind of incredible." Jonathan agreed that it was one of the hardest things he had ever done.

Jonathan says he still deletes text messages after replying to them. He says it started from a break-up when he was 24 or 25 [likely Gavin Creel] "and I kept Googling this person, I kept re-reading our texts over and over and over again and I was like, 'Groff, you've got to let go of re-reading everything over and over again. The good, the bad and the everything in between. I need to delete this chain. Let it go.' And then I thought, why am I holding on to any conversation?" He says he's slow at getting back to people, but usually responds (but can respond to a joke a month later).

Andrew says he is the most un-Hollywood person, and Jonathan had warned him about moving to LA. "The alone time is very quiet there, or was for me at least. The tumbleweeds." Andrew said he wanted Jonathan for the podcast and said he would reach out to his publicist, but was concerned when Jonathan said he could just text him, as he may not respond quickly (but he did respond).

Talking about the Bobby Darin project 'Just in Time', Jonathan said: "I'm so excited... It's something I've been working on for about seven years... This guy is fire. He talked about his relationship to the audience. For example he would wear a condom on stage in case he ejaculated. [A video clip of this part has been released.] He was a primal, primal, profound, epic, epic live performer. Sammy Davis Jr said the only person he wouldn't follow was Bobby Darin... The magic of him, and of his essence, was his live interaction with the audience." He brought Alex Timbers on originally because of the 'environment' he creates.

He then describes the conceit of the show [around 23:45, will not be discussed/spoilered here]. But he talks about wanting to evoke Darin's primal energy as a love letter to entertainment and the relationship with the audience.

Jonathan talked about the opening night gift he gave the off-Broadway Hamilton cast and crew [apple cider donuts?] before he was officially announced as being part of the show, even to the cast. Lin-Manuel Miranda told him he had one song and it would be pretty easy, and he was given sheet music and the script but no further information or a video.

Jonathan says King George was the hardest thing he had done because you on stage so briefly, come out cold, sing through your range and then leave. Merrily was easier because he was on stage the whole time.

Andrew said Jonathan as the King made himself available to the cast in Hamilton, and not all people in the role could do that.

In tech for Broadway, Jonathan and Andrew would sit in the mezzanine, and one of Andrew's favourite memories involves sitting with Jonathan and watching Renee Elise Goldsberry in a dispute with the crew about her wig. Jonathan: "And these gays are dying for it. We are loving it so much." [Both cracking up with a lot of cackling.]

Andrew ditched college for three days to see Jonathan in 'Spring Awakening'. They discuss the false rumour about Lea Michele and Jonathan says Lea can read. Jonathan talks about how he was cast in Glee after Ryan Murphy said he would write a show for Jonathan and Lea, and Ryan wrote the role of Finn for him. Jonathan was asked to sign a seven year contract and declined, and Ryan then wrote the guest star role of Jesse St James for him.

They discuss Looking, Raul Castillo and Murray Bartlett. Asked if he hooked up on the show, Jonathan said there was some hooking up on the show but not with the core group. Andrew then discusses Jonathan's cameo in 'Blindspotting' with Emmy Raver, filmed in San Francisco.

Asked about the rumored kiss at Battle Hymn on Pride this year, Jonathan said he did attend and make out with someone. Jonathan said he has gone a couple of times to Battle Hymn by himself. He says he shot a movie in Berlin and learned from friends he had met there the joys of going out all night and dancing all night. So when he came back to New York he wanted to "scratch this itch of going out". The first time he was at Battle Hymn he was in line during Pride ("in my harness, in my shorts") and Oak Onaodowan called him. Asked if he cared about the kiss being made public at Battle Hymn, Jonathan said "It makes me laugh. I'm not bothered by it. It's OK." He said in his early days he would have been scared to even walk past a gay bar due to career ramifications and the thought of being considered gay.

Around 55 minutes Jonathan said he is very lucky to be an out actor at this time, and that he came out publicly because Spring Awakening had been everything he ever dreamed of and wanted, and then he fell in love due to Gavin Creel. He said he was such a fan of Gavin's, they started dating, and then he came out publicly at the march on Washington. He remembers thinking at the time he would rather be in love and be out publicly than have a career if he was giving up movies and television.

Asked if it was difficult to date an actor, Jonathan agreed that "it's been a thing" when work was the priority over a partner. Andrew said Jonathan has dated a lot of peers, and mentioned an ex of Jonathan's has a new series out. Jonathan: "ZQ [Zachary Quinto]? Love ZQ. We are still very close. Love me some ZQ."

Andrew said he still wants Zach and Jonathan to work out as he found them together visually pleasing, and Jonathan said "No, we're friends through and through at this point... It's lovely to... however much time you spend time together as partners, and then you separate, and then you maybe come back together as friends, and the sort of beauty of coming back together as friends, and being reminded of why there was that spark. Reminded why... that connectivity..."

They hosts then ask him to play Marry, F..., Kill with his characters and shows.

Jonathan says a lot of Looking was based on his experiences, for example the uncut d... discussion was based on his talk with the creators about being insecure, and the douching talk was based on his previous boyfriends.

Patrick, King George, Jesse St James: He says he would marry Patrick because he has shown growth, and personal growth is a huge thing in someone he would marry. He would f... the King because there would a lot of rage that would be interesting and a unique experience, and he would kill Jesse St James.

Hamilton, Merrily, Spring Awakening: He would kill Spring Awakening because it was so underage, f... Hamilton because “Hamilton is my sexuality because I was so attracted to every person in Hamilton" and would marry Merrily.

Glee, Looking, Mindhunter: Kill Mindhunter because there is so much depravity there, f... Glee and marry Looking.

Asked to pick between people, he starts with Lin, then Michelle Obama and finally Beyonce, including over Lea ("she would understand"). He saw the Beyonce movie twice and says "she is everything".

Asked for a scam, Jonathan said he doesn't think standing ovations are overdone ("Why not? What's life? Let's live. Let's celebrate.") He discussed drag queen story hour, the protests in Lancaster, the celebration in Lancaster the week before, and said he remains frustrated by drag queen story hour being considered wrong and how hate and discrimination has localised to story hour protests.

Sammy's Little Problem, Chapter 21

Sammy let Lindsay hold her hand as she followed her downstairs. It felt strange at first, but given her morning, she needed to feel closer to Lindsay.

And what a morning it was.

Sammy tried to process everything that happened in the few minutes she’d been awake. Having Lindsay see her like that, sleeping in her crib—and even worse, onesie—was deeply embarrassing. She must have looked just like a baby!

How could she ever look Lindsay in the eye again and think of herself as an equal, and not some diaper-filling Little? It was one thing for Allie to see her like that. Allie was always like a big sister to her.

But Lindsay was much more than a friend. She always thought of Lindsay as a sister. And now she’s here babysitting her. Sammy couldn’t put into words how it felt to go from Lindsay’s best friend, someone she shared everything with, to being so helpless that Lindsay was now in charge of her.

It was humiliating enough to have Lindsay change her diaper earlier. Sammy never felt more little than at that moment, listening to Allie give instructions on how to properly change her diaper. All Sammy wanted to do was disappear.

Yet, she was glad Lindsay was there to help. It may be humiliating, but so is being a Little. It was better than going to the Adoption Center to have some random Caregiver adopt her.

Sammy saw Allie had already set the table for lunch. She assumed Allie must have been super busy, because she never served take out. But to her surprise, there was a bag of McDonald’s waiting for them.

“I hope you guys don’t mind, but I didn’t have time to make anything. So, here’s to hoping you like McDonald’s!” Allie said, with noticeable embarrassment in her voice.

“Oh stop, Allie, McDonald’s will do great,” Lindsay laughs.

“Sammy, honey, I got you some chicken nuggets, apple slices, and some apple juice here,” Allie says, pointing to Sammy’s spot.

McDonald’s chicken nuggets were Sammy’s guilty love. She always tried to eat healthy, but chicken nuggets were the exception. Of course, when she went, she’d get a large Diet Coke with it. She doubted Allie would ever let her have one of those again. Another privilege lost to being a Little.

Sammy sat down next to Lindsay, hoping she wouldn’t mention her sippy cup.

Ten minutes later, lunch was done. Lindsay never mentioned the sippy cup to Sammy’s relief.

“Okay, well, I need to head out,” Allie says to both of them before turning to Lindsay, “I should be back before, but if not, Sammy’s bedtime is at 8. Make sure you put her in her nighttime diaper before you do. You should have everything you need in the meantime.”

Sammy blushed again having her bedtime announced so casually. She hated her bedtime. It was so early.

“I got this, Linds. Everything is under control.”

Allie smiles, turning to Sammy. “I want you to behave for Lindsay, okay, Sammy? You two can have fun, but you need to listen to what she says. She’s in charge. I don’t want to hear you were misbehaving.”

Sammy just nods, feeling like a toddler being chided for misbehaving.

“Do you want your paci?” Allie asks her.

“Okay,” Sammy concedes, allowing Allie to clip her paci onto her shirt before putting it in her mouth.

With that, Allie leaves. Sammy turns to Lindsay, unsure what to do next. Would Lindsay act like her friend or babysitter? What would Linsday let her do? As she looked at Lindsay, she wished she hadn’t wanted her pacifier, knowing it only made her look more like a little.

A slow smile grows on Lindsay’s face. For a split second, Sammy thinks it’s a bad sign.

“Soooo…this is awkward,” Lindsay jokes.

Sammy smiles, happy that Lindsay broke the ice. “Definitwy” Sammy lisps through her pacifier, causing Lindsay to break down laughing.

“I’m sorry, Sammy, but that was just too funny! I’m not laughing at you!” Lindsay admits.

Sammy spits out her pacifier, letting hang on her shirt, face red with embarrassment. She knows Lindsay isn’t making fun of her, but still.

“What should we do?” Lindsay asks, “I kinda want to see what the wreckage of that is.” Lindsay points to the Legos.

Sammy blushes, remembering her tantrum last night. “Well, it’s supposed to be the Millenium Falcon. At least it was until I broke it,” Sammy admits sheepishly.

“Well, why don’t we start over? You always loved your Legos, even when I made you play with Barbies every time. So, sounds like it’s time I play Legos for once! I owe you!”

“You do! Do you know how many times I had to pretend Barbies were fun growing up? And you always made me play with Ken!”

It was Lindsay’s turn to blush. “Sorry! I just loved it and wasn’t good at sharing yet!”

“It’s okay, now you have to play with Legos!”

“Sounds good to me!” Lindsay laughs, “and speaking of Ken…” Lindsay hesitates, realizing she should avoid telling Sammy about boys.

“What about Ken? Ken from school?” Sammy asks, interested.

Lindsay panics, wishing Sammy wouldn’t have put that together. “Oh, it’s nothing. Let’s build some Legos!”

“What about Ken, Lindsay? I want to know! You always had a huge crush on him!”

Lindsay knew she was in trouble. Allie wouldn’t want Sammy hearing about parties and boys. And she definitely didn’t want Sammy to be jealous that she was out going to parties and finally kissed Ken, especially when she had bedtimes and diapers instead of freedom and fun. How was she going to get out of this?

“Tell me, Linds! I know something happened! Don’t think just because I’m a Little now doesn’t mean I don’t know how you look when you have a secret!”

“I don’t know, Sammy. I don’t think it’s really appropriate to talk about now.”

Sammy looks both scandalized and hurt. “W-why not, it’s me, Linds!”

“Sammy…you know I want to tell you, but its not something I’m comfortable talking about with a Little. It’s not fair to you and it’s a bit too mature for Littles.”

“That’s not fair! I’m not a baby, Lindsay! I’m your best friend!”

“I know you aren’t a baby, Sammy,” Lindsay replies hesitantly, “its just…you are a Little now. These things aren’t supposed to be heard by Littles. You don’t need to worry about them!”

Sammy was on the verge of a tantrum. She knew it but was torn. The last thing she wanted to do was act like a tantruming Little in front of Lindsay. But, this was ridiculous. They’d spent hours talking about this stuff all year. How could she say it was inappropriate now?

“Just tell me, Linds! You’re being stupid! I can handle an ‘adult” story!’” Sammy demanded, putting up sarcastic air quotes when she said adult.

Lindsay sighed. “Look, Sammy. I don’t think its appropriate, okay? You can yell at me, but my decision is final.”

“Oh, so now you get to decide everything?”

“Yes, I do, Sammy. Just drop it, please!”

Sammy was seeing red. “No, that’s dumb! You don’t get to tell me what to do! This is bullsh*t.”

Sammy knew she went to far, but didn’t care. She had to tell Lindsay what she thought.

“I really didn’t want to do this, Sammy. But I think it’s time for a timeout. You can’t yell at me like that—and especially not use that language. You can go into timeout now or I’ll have to call Allie to tell her what you just said.”

Tears welled in Sammy’s eyes. This was so unfair. Lindsay was putting her in timeout? Her best friend? Yet, she didn’t want her to call Allie, she couldn’t handle Allie’s disappointment.

Lindsay walked over to Sammy, putting her pacifier into her mouth before giving her a hug. They embraced each other for a minute before anything was said.

“I’m sorry, Sammy. I really am. But I have to put you in timeout. Can you go stand in the corner for ten minutes? If you behave I won’t tell Allie about this, okay?”

“O-kay, Windsay,” Sammy sobs, walking to the corner.

Sammy couldn’t believe she was back in timeout again. She never got in trouble at school, but here she was being sent to the corner by her best friend. At least this time, Sammy promised herself, she wouldn’t throw herself down on the ground. She’d stand there like an adult. Even if she didn’t feel like it.

Lindsay watched Sammy as she stared at the corner. She hated that this was all her fault. She never should have brought Ken up. If she hadn’t, they’d be perfectly happy building Legos together.

Once time was up, she walked towards Sammy. She wanted to apologize, but she knew she had to check her diaper first. She hated that she had to do this. She wished Sammy never needed this. But it didn’t matter now, it had been too long since they changed her diaper, she needed to know how wet she was.

“Sammy, it’s been ten minutes, are you ready to play?”

She could see the ghosts of tears on Sammy’s face, though she was noticeably calmer. “Yeth, Windsay,” Sammy whimpers.

“Good, I’m sorry for needing you to go to timeout. Let’s not do that again, okay?”

“Okay.”

“But I need to check your diaper, Sammy,” Lindsay says, trying to sound casual as she pulls down her jeans, checking Sammy’s diaper. It’s wet, but not full.

Sammy shivers in embarrassment. Her best friend just checked her diaper like it was nothing.

“It’s wet, but not ready to change,” Lindsay says, “now can we start playing?”

responding to this before I hit the hay, hi hi and thank you ^_^ uhmm the names don’t stray too far but what I have so far is

Alex = Alexandria (Alexa for short and Alex for even shorter, she also just says her full name is Alexander because Alexandria is a little embarrassing)

Jay = Jaylin (This is unchanged by the way, jaylin is the full name I picked for both my genderbent Au and my usual interpretation for jay! Both actually go by the nickname “Lin” but that’s reserved for family)

Brian = Brianna (Bri, for short)

Jessica = Jesse (His nickname, believe it or not, is also Jay but he only is called that by family and it’s supposed to be the literal pronunciation of the letter J)

Amy = Ammerick (Rick.. for short. Yeah, I know but it’s a little endearing?)

Tim = Tahlia (Literally only jay can call her that, nobody else, and only sparingly. Other than that she only goes by Tim and Jay rarely ever calls her by her full name)

Sarah = Sam (Sammy is a nickname he uses!)

Seth = Eden (It felt fitting to have her be named Eden? Idk why? But yeah)

5/26/24 EDIT: This keeps getting notes and I have no clue if people will see this but 3ish months back they released a wallpaper with the girls showing Lucia as possibly taller than Cloud, if not at least the tallest of the girls, so it can be assumed that the scaling for the FS characters might be off due to being modeled separately.
