My media this week (27 Oct-2 Nov 2024)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
šŸ“š STUFF I READ šŸ“š
šŸ˜Š The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh (Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney #3) (Claudia Gray, author; Billie Fulford-Brown, narrator) - A really enjoyable cozy mystery in this austenverse. I did genuinely want to keep reading to find out the solution. However, I'm finding the will they/won't they/miscommunication/misunderstanding BS about Juliet & Jonathan's relationship is really starting to grate, even though the reasons for all the non/miscommunications are marginally reasonable & in character. But I was still quite annoyed with it, and I think I might be over this series for it. By the end at least J&J had talked and are on the same page about their feelings - now the obstacles are external at least, which gives me a bit more patience with it? probably my annoyance will be faded by the time the next one is published & I'll be happy to pick it up again.
šŸ˜ A Year in the Life of Sarge's Person (BlueSimplicity) - 189K, incredible post-WS recovery fic - loved how Bucky-focused this was (steve doesn't even appear until like 2/3 of the way thru the fic), loved his found family and of course I loved Sarge. Instant forever fave, stayed up until 2am reading which at my age is no small thing.
šŸ™‚ Specks of Silver (vanderloo) - 82K, lightly magical Suits fic- liked the 'small magic' style of this world
šŸ„° King & Queen (RELIC #3) (Maz Maddox, author; Kirt Graves, narrator) - dino shifters AND drag queens!!!! dino shifters AS drag queens! so much fun!
šŸ’–šŸ’–Ā +108K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved šŸ’–šŸ’–
an outlier that should not be counted (dadvans) - 9-1-1: bucktommy, 7K - fluffy, cute, very šŸ„°
Conquest (the_deep_magic) - The Eagle of the Ninth: marcus/esca, 7K - šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„
Let Me Be Your Porch Light, Baby (AidaRonan) - Stranger Things: steddie, 7K - fuck yes mothman! here for all the monsterfucking!
A Dream Through Open Eyes (neapeaikea) - 9-1-1: bucktommy, 16K - cute, cute, cute!!! love a teacher!Buck AU

Anna!!! Is it just me or has greys been completely underwhelming this season?? Maybe it's just in comparison to 911 (which I'm way more invested in in general) and station 19 (which I think you don't watch but I've been crying every episode and it's the final season) but I finish every episode and go 'okay, that was definitely.... an episode?' and then move onto s19 and 911 without thinking about it anymore šŸ˜…šŸ˜…
Honestly the most exciting thing about this season has been deciding which things could relate to 911 so I can come yell about them in your inbox šŸ˜…
Sam, baby, yeah, I feel you, it's definitely just been a season. But honestly, it's good, nothing happened yet that makes me say I will never watch this show again and that's a win considering some of the stuff that happened in previous season because it was almost a ritual kaoskoskspsksw it's been entertaining to watch but it's nothing mind-blowing, it's just there. I'm feeling very neutral about everything about it. It's mostly just stuff to imagine for other characters.

Okay but the use of Sam and Deena's argument in the hospital to build up tension to Peter being stabbed by skull killer was so well done. Watching it over again and it has to be one of my favorite scenes of the movie.
Hah, I don't know if it was a favorite of mine, but it WAS exceptionally well done! They really made use of all their tools, the really good, intense fight between Sam and Deena, which, the fight before was great as well. I do love wholesome OTP type ships, but as I've said with S19 and Happiest Season, heavier, realer conflicts don't really stand in the way of that, they create stakes and more investment.
But yeah, they start to build that argument up, and then the other tool, the fact that we would absolutely expect Peter to stick around and be shitty to Deena while Sam would tolerate it until finally the full sign of her growth would be picking Deena over him but hahahaha, instead, he's just unceremoniously dispatched like immediately! I really liked the movie's pacing.

And Morven and Jac to be friends???96. What do you think would be an interesting storyline for the show to explore?I wish theyā€™d show Jac having a full scale mental breakdown after everything thatā€™s happened to her, itā€™s almost inevitable at this point plus time be great to have more mental health rep 97. Part 2 of my answer...
Mixed representation:
ā€˜The Good Doctorā€™. Granted, I could only get through a couple of episodes of this, because it wasnā€™t really my thing. The episodes I did see, I thought were okay. There were some good aspects and some bad aspects.
I thought Freddie Highmoreā€™s performance as Shaun was quite good. The way he moved and spoke felt realistic to me.
I liked that Shaun was a whole character, not just Walking Autism like Sam on Atypical. He had a complex backstory and everything.
I liked that they made sure to specify that not ALL autistic people are savants, Shaun just happens to be one.
I didnā€™t like that Shaun felt like he was being written as a child at times. For example, thereā€™s a scene in one of the first episodes where he has to ask a co-worker about what sarcasm is. Heā€™s supposed to be in his 20s, he should have learned that already! It would be one thing for him to not know when someone was using sarcasm, but not knowing what it is, at his age, feels very unrealistic.
Also, even though they at least explained that Shaun was a rare case, I still wish he hadnā€™t been a savant in the first place. It would be more interesting to see a show about an autistic doctor who wasnā€™t any smarter than any other doctor.
I havenā€™t watched far enough to see them, but sadly I know TGD also has some very ableist episodes. Thereā€™s one where Shaun is transphobic to a patient and itā€™s blamed on his autism, which is gross, and thereā€™s another bad one written about here: http://www.femestella.com/the-good-doctor-review-recap-mute-boy-episode/
However, I havenā€™t really heard things this bad about the show in general, so I think itā€™s generally pretty okay but takes some really bad turns occasionally (not that that makes the offensive episodes fine, theyā€™re still bad, obviously).
ā€˜Holby Cityā€™. This is a spinoff to ā€˜Casualtyā€™, set in the surgery wards of the same hospital. Sadly, while Casualty does ND representation very well, Holbyā€™s reputation with it is not so great.
They have an autistic character, Jason Haynes. Jason is pretty bad representation. For one thing, he hardly ever appears. And when he does appear, itā€™s usually for Very Special Episode plots where the focus is on other characters learning how to ā€œdeal withā€ him, or for scenes exaggerating his autistic traits as a joke.
Jason isnā€™t portrayed as having much personality outside of his autism, so I havenā€™t got much to say about him. What I can say is that heā€™s portrayed as unrealistically childish, almost like he just walked out of a lab fully-grown and doesnā€™t know anything about the world. For example, in S21 E26 ā€˜Kiss Kissā€™, Jason sees his friend Zav down on one knee in front of his girlfriend Donna. Zav is holding a heart-shaped balloon, about to propose to Donna. Jasonā€™s response to seeing this is to say ā€œOh, balloons! Are we having a party?ā€, implying he didnā€™t know what a proposal is - even though heā€™s a married man.
Also, other characters around Jason tend to patronise him and treat him like heā€™s a child. Theyā€™re portrayed as nice people for doing this and as ā€œstrongā€ for putting up with Jason at all.
Another character on the show, Henrik Hanssen, is neurodivergent in several ways. He has depression, OCD, PTSD (never named in the show, but shown through symptoms), and heā€™s heavily implied to be autistic. Some of these are well-portrayed, some are not.
Henrikā€™s depression is very well-handled. Rather than being a singular depression story that was forgotten about and never mentioned again, like many portrayals are, Henrikā€™s depression is a consistent part of his character. Itā€™s not overdramatised, but not glamourised either - itā€™s just something he lives with.
His OCD is badly written. There have been a few good episodes about it (S19 E03 ā€˜Black Dogā€™ is a brilliant one), but mostly itā€™s just played off like a quirky character trait. The only sign of OCD he even shows in most episodes is that he organises things a lot. Even in incidences where he should be showing more symptoms, he doesnā€™t.
His PTSD is fairly well-written. He developed it after his sonā€™s death in 2017, and while the show has never outright called it PTSD, itā€™s made very clear thatā€™s what he has - the symptoms have lingered for a long time, as weā€™ve seen him showing symptoms and having flashbacks as recently as last year. Itā€™s not just kept toĀ ā€˜obviousā€™ symptoms like flashbacks, either - weā€™ve seen him display anxiety, dissociation, irritability, etc. It does kind of feel ignored lately, but Henrik hasnā€™t been a major focus for a while (other characters are getting all the big storylines at the moment), so I wouldnā€™t jump to saying itā€™s been forgotten about just yet.
His autism is a great portrayal and I really, really wish they would have diagnosed him in the show instead of introducing Jason. This post is getting long already, so Iā€™ll just link this page: https://lonelier-version-of-you.tumblr.com/henrik101
Near the end of 2017, the show introduced Henrikā€™s old friend John Gaskell. They had a heavily implied gay relationship (that Henrikā€™s actor later confirmed was romantic), actually, but thatā€™s beside the point because weā€™re not talking about queer representation lol. Anyway, throughout 2018, we saw that John was mentally ill. He was never given an exact label in the show, but he was shown dealing with hallucinations, self-loathing, paranoia and mood swings, among other things. Johnā€™s symptoms were used to show how ā€œcreepyā€ he was, he was portrayed as not caring about morality or ethics, and towards the end of the storyline he actually committed murder and it was blamed on his mental illness. Obviously, this was really bad representation.
Yet another character, Sacha Levy, has depression. I think this is generally well-handled. Sachaā€™s depression manifests itself in recurring episodes, rather than being constant like Henrikā€™s, but itā€™s definitely not forgotten about. And itā€™s not portrayed as ā€œattention seekingā€ or something he could ā€œsnap out ofā€ or anything.
There are more examples, but Iā€™ll stop here. As you can see, Holby gets some ND representation very right, and some of it very wrong. :/
Bad representation:
ā€˜The A Wordā€™. This is a show about a neurotypical couple whose child gets diagnosed with autism. The kid, Joe, doesnā€™t have much personality outside of autism - not that heā€™s in the show much anyway! Joe barely features. The plot of the show is just about how stressful Joe is for his family, which reinforces harmful tropes about autistic people being burdens. ://
ok i need some help here
i'm doing a presentation kinda about neurodivergence in the media and their representation, you know?
so first i know that "Atypical" is not the best representation so if someone can explain me why i would appreciate it. like i know it's because sam has like no personality apart from being autistic but is there something else?
also can you tell me some movies/books/shows with good nd represantation and other with bad nd representation
thanks i appreciate it
