Es war schon länger hergewesen, dass Samantha in Manchester gewesen war, trotzdem fühlte sie sich jedes Mal wieder wie zu Hause. Das Grundstück ihrer Verwandten war ordentlich, jedoch ein bisschen staubig und so hatte sie die letzten Tage damit verbracht alles etwas zu säubern, bevor sie sich in die Bücher vertiefen konnte und so weiteres Wissen ansammeln konnte. Der Staub war nicht sonderlich verwunderlich, denn die wenigsten fanden sich mittlerweile hier ein oder hatten gar einen Schlüssel für das Anwesen. Aber die Bibliothek und die Aussicht, dass sie sich mit Simon treffen würde, hatte gereicht, dass sie wieder einige Tage hier verbringen würde. Vielleicht auch etwas länger. Genug Urlaub und Überstunden hatte sie definitiv angesammelt.

Bevor Sam das Haus verließ, warf sie noch einen letzten Blick in den Spiegel. Wie so oft, blieb sie ihren Motto was Kleidung betraf treu „All black everything.“. Schwarzes Crop-Top, schwarze Cargohose, schwarze Dr. Martens und eine schwarze Winterjacke. Geschminkt hatte sie sich nur leicht und auch ihre Haare waren einfach offen und hingen glatt und dunkel über ihren Schultern. Dann bekam sie die Nachricht. Ihr Uber war da.

Samantha verließ das Haus, stieg in das Auto ein und lies sich zu dem Pub fahren, wo sie verabredet waren. Die letzten paar Meter ging sie zu Fuß, hatte die Kapuze dabei leicht ins Gesicht gezogen, sah Simon jedoch schon warten. Erst hatte sie noch die Hoffnung, dass sie sich auch noch eben eine Zigarette anzünden könnte, sah jedoch bereits, dass er seine wegwarf und wollte dann fürs erste auch nicht noch länger draußen stehen.

„Hey.“ grüßte sie ihn mit einem freudigen Lächeln zurück und erwiderte die Umarmung kurz. Natürlich war sie deutlich kleiner, aber das war nicht schlimm. Sam war kleiner als viele, denn auch mit ihren knappen 1,60m gehörte sie eher zu den kleineren Frauen. „Ach, alles gut. Wir gehen rein, da ist das Wetter egal.“ sie zwinkerte ihn kurz zu, öffnete dann schon die Tür zum Pub und trat ein, wobei ihr Blick direkt umher glitt. Als sie einen freien Platz entdeckte, griff sie Simon einfach kurzerhand am Arm und zog ihn mit sich herüber, bis sie vor dem Tisch standen. Dort lies sie ihn wieder los, zog ihre Jacke aus, hängte diese über den Stuhl und setzte sich. „Weißt du schon, was du trinken willst?“

# Kapitel 2: Eine neue Jagd

Dean Winchester saß in dem abgenutzten Ledersessel des Motelzimmers, das er und Sam für die Nacht gemietet hatten. Er konnte nicht schlafen. Immer wieder tauchte das Bild von Elisa vor seinem inneren Auge auf – ihre feurigen roten Haare, die entschlossenen braunen Augen und die ruhige Stärke, die sie ausstrahlte. Sie hatte ihnen das Leben gerettet, und das konnte er nicht einfach vergessen.

„Was denkst du nach?“ fragte Sam, der auf dem Bett saß und in sein Laptop tippte.

„Über Elisa“, antwortete Dean und starrte an die Decke. „Sie war gut, verdammt gut. Und ich will wissen, wer sie ist. Sie hat sich einfach aus dem Staub gemacht, ohne wirklich etwas zu sagen.“

Sam nickte. „Ja, sie war beeindruckend. Aber wir haben unsere eigenen Probleme, Dean. Dad ist immer noch da draußen, und wir haben keine Ahnung, wo er ist. Wir müssen ihn finden.“

Dean seufzte. „Ich weiß. Aber irgendetwas an ihr... Ich weiß nicht, ich hab einfach das Gefühl, dass da mehr ist. Vielleicht hängt es irgendwie zusammen.“

„Wie auch immer“, sagte Sam. „Ich habe ein paar neue Infos über einen Fall in einer alten Psychiatrie gefunden. Da scheint es ziemlich heftig zu spuken. Vielleicht sollten wir uns das ansehen, während wir nach Hinweisen auf Dad suchen.“

Dean nickte widerwillig. „In Ordnung. Lass uns morgen früh losfahren.“

Währenddessen saß Elisa in einem kleinen Café, vertieft in ihre Recherchen. Sie hatte es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, alles über den gelbäugigen Dämon herauszufinden, der für den Tod ihres Vaters verantwortlich war. Phillip hatte seine letzten Worte damit verbracht, sie zu warnen und ihr zu sagen, dass dieser Dämon mächtiger war als alles, was er je gejagt hatte.

Elisa blätterte durch alte Zeitungsartikel und durchsuchte Foren im Internet. Plötzlich stieß sie auf einen Bericht über seltsame Vorkommnisse in einer alten Psychiatrie in der Nähe. Menschen berichteten von Geistererscheinungen und unerklärlichen Vorfällen. Es klang nach einem neuen Fall, den sie untersuchen musste.

„Das könnte eine Spur sein“, murmelte sie und notierte sich die Adresse der Psychiatrie. Vielleicht würde sie dort auch Hinweise auf den gelbäugigen Dämon finden. Sie war entschlossen, die Wahrheit herauszufinden und den Dämon zu töten, um den Tod ihres Vaters zu rächen.

Als sie das Café verließ und in die Nacht hinaustrat, spürte sie eine seltsame Unruhe. Die Begegnung mit Dean und Sam hatte etwas in ihr ausgelöst, eine Erinnerung an das Leben, das sie einmal gehabt hatte. Doch sie durfte sich nicht ablenken lassen. Sie musste fokussiert bleiben, um ihren Vater zu rächen und die Welt vor den dunklen Kreaturen zu schützen.

Dean und Sam erreichten die alte Psychiatrie am nächsten Morgen. Das Gebäude war riesig und sah verlassen aus, doch die Geschichten, die sie gehört hatten, ließen keinen Zweifel daran, dass es hier spukte.

„Also gut“, sagte Dean, als sie vor dem Haupteingang standen. „Lass uns herausfinden, was hier vor sich geht.“

Als sie das Gebäude betraten, fühlten sie sofort die Kälte und das bedrückende Gefühl, das von solchen Orten ausging. Sie begannen, die Gänge zu durchsuchen, als sie plötzlich eine vertraute Stimme hörten.

„Dean? Sam?“ Elisa trat aus dem Schatten und sah die beiden überrascht an.

„Elisa? Was machst du hier?“ fragte Dean erstaunt.

„Dasselbe wie ihr, nehme ich an“, antwortete sie und hielt ihnen einen alten Zeitungsausschnitt entgegen. „Ich untersuche die Vorfälle hier.“

Dean konnte sich ein Lächeln nicht verkneifen. „Scheint, als könnten wir wieder deine Hilfe gebrauchen.“

Elisa nickte. „In Ordnung. Aber keine Ablenkungen. Wir haben einen Job zu erledigen.“

Die drei Jäger machten sich gemeinsam daran, die Geheimnisse der Psychiatrie zu lüften, nicht ahnend, dass ihre Wege in Zukunft noch öfter kreuzen würden – und dass ihre Schicksale enger miteinander verwoben waren, als sie es sich je hätten vorstellen können.

This year: put a Book on EVERY Bed

Dear Readers: Every year at Christmastime, I delight in promoting a Book on Every Bed. I do so in memory of my mother, Jane, who raised her children to understand that if you have a book, you are never alone.

The idea originally came from historian David McCollough, who recounted the Christmas mornings of his youth, when the very first thing he woke up to was a wrapped book at the base of his bed, left there by Santa.

The most important part is what happens next: Family members reading together.

That’s it! That’s the whole idea!

Over the last ten years, working with my local literacy partner Children’s Reading Connection (childrensreadingconnection.org), this campaign has grown to include schools, libraries and bookstores, who have donated scores of books to families that might not have access to them. The goal – and our dream – is that families will experience the intimate and personal connection of diving into and sharing stories, the way my mother and I did throughout her life.

Over the years, important literacy advocates, such as the Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden and LeVar Burton, and bestselling children’s authors Brad Meltzer and Peter Reynolds, have endorsed and helped to spread the good word.

This year is different. So many of us are alone, hurting, and separated from family and familiar holiday routines.

All of us – not just children – need a good book on our beds.

I have broadened the scope to include specific recommendations for books spanning all ages. I’ve reached out to some of my favorite writers, literacy advocates, and independent booksellers across the country for their special picks.

Whether you purchase a book or share an old favorite, I hope you will be inspired to put A Book on Every Bed this year. It is not necessary to make a Christmas deadline – this idea is one to sustain people throughout what might shape up to be a very long winter.

Following are recommendations for all age groups.

“You Matter,” by Christian Robinson is a bright and elegant book that takes children on a journey around the world to make it clear that everyone matters, and perhaps more importantly, reassure them that they matter, no matter what they look like or where they are from.

“The Suitcase,” by Chris Naylor-Ballesteros: This beautiful story about immigration, is full of heart and humanity as it teaches our littlest ones about hope, tolerance and kindness.

“Home in the Woods,” by Eliza Wheeler: This stunningly beautiful picture book has fast become a customer favorite. A story about starting over, of overcoming! A story of family, love and joy of being and growing together.

Middle Grade Readers: From Becky Anderson, co-owner of Anderson’s Bookshop, in Naperville, Illinois (andersonsbookshops.com):

“Ways to Make Sunshine,” by Renee Watson: Watson writes her own version of Ramona Quimby, one starring a Black girl and her family, in this start to a charming new middle grade series about spirit, kindness, and sunshine.  Ryan, a fourth grader, finds the positive in difficult situations and when trouble strikes. She is that character to love and bring in the sunshine!  Grades 3-6

Skunk and Badger by Amy Timberlake, illustrated by Jon Klassen: Winnie-the-Pooh and Frog and Toad meet in a fresh take on a classic odd-couple friendship.  Klassen’s illustrations add much to a story of an unlikely friendship that proves that opposites can see the good in one another. The first in a series.  Grades 3-7

“The Silver Arrow,” by Lev Grossman: Kate’s humdrum life is transformed when her eccentric Uncle Herbert brings her a colossal locomotive train, the Silver Arrow, as her eleventh birthday gift, leading her and her younger brother on a mysterious journey.  The train will remind readers of the Hogwart’s Express. A story that is environmentally aware and calls readers to action. Perfect for fans of Roald Dahl and The Chronicles of Narnia.  Grades 3-7

YA Readers: Danielle Kreger, Blue Bunny Books, Dedham, MA (bluebunnybooks.com):  "One of Us is Lying" by Karen M McManus: An edge of your seat mystery that takes place in Bayview High school during detention. Simon, a so-called "outcast," never makes it out of detention alive. What follows is a tale of twists and turns that has the reader questioning the reliability of the characters, and the secrets they keep.

"The New Kid" by Jerry Craft: A spot-on graphic novel about navigating a new school, new friends and identity. Jordan Banks is in seventh grade when he is sent to a rigorous private school and grapples with staying true to himself- his love for creating cartoons, how to maintain his old friends and how he fits in in a less than diverse new school. A totally lovable and relatable character!

Adult Non-fiction: From Alex George, the author, most recently, of The Paris Hours, founder and director of the Unbound Book Festival, and the owner of Skylark Bookshop, in Columbia, MO (skylarkbookshop.com)

“Wintering,” by Katherine May: This is a deeply personal, quietly beautiful book, written with grace and immense thoughtfulness. We all go through difficult times; by mulling over her responses to her own misfortunes, the author offers insight as to how we might think differently about low points in our lives. Instructive, inspiring, and ultimately profoundly hopeful.

“The Book of Delights,” by Ross Gay: This utterly charming book of micro-essays by Ross Gay, a beloved and renowned poet, is a perfect gift for – well, just about anyone. Gay set himself the challenge of finding one thing that delighted him each day for a year, and then writing about it. The result is a quirky, brilliant book that you can dip in and out of, always finding something to make you smile, and think. A guaranteed lifter of spirits.

“Intimations: Six Essays,” by Zadie Smith: I’ve always loved Zadie Smith’s nonfiction work, and this small but powerful book shows her talents at their finest. Written during the pandemic, these six pieces are sharp, and funny, and thought-provoking. Smith’s deeply personal reflections on this strangest of years is essential reading. If ever there was a book for these strange times, it’s this one.

Adult Fiction: Mark LaFramboise, Senior Book Buyer at Politics and Prose in Washington, DC (politics-prose.com)

“The Butterfly Lampshade,” by Aimee Bender: This is a beautiful story of mental illness, the bonds of sisterhood, and the liveliness of a child's imagination.  Francie is 8 years old when the book begins, the daughter of a single mom.  This is the story of her odyssey after her mother is committed to a mental hospital, and she is sent to be raised by an aunt and uncle.

“Luster,” by Raven Leilani: Edie, the young protagonist in Luster, Raven Leilani's debut novel, is daring, sexy, hilarious, super smart, and drop dead beautiful.  Her affair with a married man takes a turn for the strange when she meets and befriends the man's wife and daughter.  Edie is whip smart because Raven Leilani is whip smart and her voice propels this beguiling novel.

“What Are You Going Through,” by Sigrid Nunez: Sigrid Nunez writes so beautifully that plot feels irrelevant.  The writer's confidence and authority are apparent from the first page.  Ultimately, it's the story of a woman who is asked by an old college acquaintance to be with her when she takes her life, after a cancer diagnosis.  But, like her previous book The Friend (about a woman who inherits a large Great Dane), it doesn't matter what story she tells because her words bristle with life.

“Apeirogon,” by Colum McCann: Two fathers, one Palestinian and one Israeli have both lost their young daughters to violence but have decided that reconciliation, not revenge, is what they needed to seek. In the process, they became best friends. McCann describes the insanity and senseless violence bred in the Middle East, the Occupation under which the Palestinians are forced to live, but also the beauty of the country, the migration of birds, the many ways humans overcome adversity and find solace in the natural world and each other. In a series of 1001 fragments, McCann walks us through his imaginary polygon, the Apeirogon of the title, containing an infinite number of sides, an infinite number of gorgeous sentences, and ultimately an infinite number of ways to view the human condition.  

“All the Way to the Tigers,” by Mary Morris: Travel writer Mary Morris’ book, written in small chapters, was in some ways similar to reading Colum McCann's, Aperagon, also written in small bits (in his case 1001, in Mary's -- 112 chapters). Morris travels to India in search of the elusive Bengal tiger, but in so many ways she is searching for herself and her place in the world as she recovers from a serious ankle injury that leaves her debilitated but determined.  

In her short vignettes, she quotes Rilke, Wendell Berry, other writers she admires and reminds us how important it is to listen intently to others as in active listening we are rewarded with deeper understanding.

“The Chair Rocks,” by Ashton Applewhite: From childhood on, we’re barraged by messages that it’s sad to be old. That wrinkles are embarrassing, and old people useless. Author and activist Ashton Applewhite believed them too—until she realized where this prejudice comes from and the damage it does. Lively, funny, and deeply researched, This Chair Rocks traces Applewhite’s journey from apprehensive boomer to pro-aging radical, and in the process debunks myth after myth about late life. The book explains the roots of ageism—in history and in our own age denial. Johan Renck erzählt in seiner HBO-Serie davon, was in den Tagen, Wochen und Monaten nach dem Reaktorunfall in der Sowjetunion passiert ist. Dabei verbindet er mithilfe der bedrohlichen Klänge von Hildur Guðnadóttirs Cello (die bei Johann Jóhannsson Erfolgsprojekten mit Denis Villeneuve ebenso an Bord war wie zuletzt bei Todd Phillips »Joker«-Verfilmung) klug individuelle Erlebnisse mit der großen politischen Erzählung, indem er die Katastrophe aus der Perspektive verschiedener Figuren erzählt, die entweder in politischer Verantwortung stehen, wissenschaftlich beraten oder zu dem millionenschweren Heer an Menschen gehören, die die Reaktorkatastrophe auf die eine oder andere Art und Weise ausbaden müssen.

Leonid Toptunov (Robert Emms) und Alexandr Akimov (Sam Troughton) im Kontrollzentrum des Atomktraftwerks kurz vor der Explosion des Reaktors Die überwiegend in Litauen gedrehte Serie hat auf den einschlägigen Review-Datenbanken überwiegend begeistertes Feedback erhalten, in der Filmdatenbank IMDB wird sie derzeit mit 9,4 von 10 Sternen bewertet, bei Rotten Tomatoes mit 96 von 100 Prozent bei den Fachleuten und 98 von 100 Prozent beim Publikum. Das kommt nicht von ungefähr, wenn man im Blick behält, dass es sich um eine fiktional zugespitzte Mini-Serie handelt. Getragen wir die Erzählung von Stellan Skarsgård als sowjetischem Innenminister Boris Shcherbina, Jared Harris als Valery Legasov, führender Kernphysiker des Landes, sowie Jessie Buckley, die die Ehefrau eines der Feuerwehrmänner, die den brennenden Reaktor löschen sollten, spielt. Sie begleitet das elendige Sterben ihres Mannes Vasily, der innerhalb von wenigen Tagen an den Folgen der ausgesetzten Strahlung im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes krepiert (hier hat vor allem die Maske ganze Arbeit geleistet, die den körperlichen Verfall derjenigen, die der tödlichen Strahlung des Reaktors schutzlos ausgeliefert waren, in schockierender Weise nachvollziehbar macht) und steht danach symbolisch für die Langzeitfolgen der Reaktorkatastrophe.

Lyudmilla Ignatenko (Jessie Buckley) begleitet ihren Mann Vasily (Adam Nagaitis) bei seinem grauenvollen Sterben. Shcherbina und Legasov führen den Kampf gegen die Zeit an vorderster Front, vom Geheimdienst überwacht und ständig mit neuen Herausforderungen und willkürlichen politischen Entscheidungen konfrontiert. Unterstützt werden sie von der Kernphysikerin Ulan Khomyuk (Emily Watson), die in den geheimen Archiven der sowjetischen Wissenschaft recherchiert, um herauszufinden, wie es überhaupt zu der Explosion kommen konnte. Denn dass ein Reaktor überhaupt explodieren kann, wusste nicht nur keiner der Verantwortlichen im Kontrollzentrum, sondern auch sonst niemand. Khomyuk ist von einem guten Dutzend Figuren – Feuerwehrmänner, Wissenschaftler, Bergleute, Militärs, Apparatschiks und einfache Bürger –, die die fünfteilige Serie mit ihren individuellen Geschichten schultern. Laut Renck beruhen die in seinem Film erzählten Ereignisse vollständig auf verbürgten Tatsachen. Was schon unter normalen Umständen eine starke Aussage bei einem dramatischen Kunstwerk ist, wirkt bei so einem politisch brisanten Vorfall natürlich doppelt. Zumal Aussagen wie »Jede Lüge, die wir erzählen, geht zu lasten der Wahrheit« die Latte der Erwartungen hoch legen. So ist es kein Wunder, dass sich seit Ausstrahlung der Serie (die im vergangenen Jahr auf dem Bezahlsender Sky gezeigt wurde) die Kritik an dieser Behauptung aufhängt. Dem Film wird dramatische Überhöhung, Effekthascherei und Übertreibung der Unfallfolgen unterstellt. Bedenkt man aber, dass es sich hierbei nicht um einen Dokumentarfilm, sondern um eine fiktionale Verarbeitung der Ereignisse handelt, die Höhepunkte und Cliffhanger produzieren muss, dann relativiert sich diese kritische Einschätzung. Zumal Renck den Fokus nicht auf die wissenschaftliche Aufarbeitung der Ereignisse legt, sondern auf die Folgen des Atomunfalls für die einfachen Menschen. Er zeigt, wie eine Katastrophe von jetzt auf gleich jeden treffen kann, unabhängig von der Stellung in der Nomenklatura der Partei, dem Rang, Beruf, Alter und Geschlecht.

Valery Legasov (Jared Harris) und Ulana Khomyuk (Emily Watson) im wissenschaftlichen Austausch. Die Serie überzeugt in ihrer erzählerischen Wucht, und das aus zwei Gründen: Zum einen wissen Johan Renck und sein Kameramann Jakob Ihre um die Macht von Bildern. Vor allem in dem besonderen Kontext, als dass sie eine Geschichte erzählen, um deren Bedeutung die Zuschauer wissen, die beteiligten Figuren jedoch nicht. Ob die vor Radioaktivität glimmende Rauchsäule, der auf die schaulustigen Anwohner von Prypyat niedergehende Feinstaub oder der durch die umliegenden Wälder wehende Wind – diese an und für sich symbolischen Aufnahmen haben angesichts der unmittelbaren Bedrohung dieser Katastrophe eine immens starke Wirkung. Zum anderen ist der aufklärerische Aspekt immens. Craig Mazin ist es mit seinem Drehbuch gelungen, die wissenschaftlichen Fakten in begreifbare Bilder zu übersetzen. Insbesondere der letzte Teil der Serie, der von Valery Legasovs Aussage im Strafprozess gegen Chefingenieur Anatoly Dyatlov (Paul Ritter) getragen wird, werden (dem Format geschuldet natürlich auf Kosten wissenschaftlicher Komplexität) nicht nur die Vorgänge innerhalb eines Kernreaktors verständlich, sondern auch das System der Verheimlichung und Vertuschung wissenschaftlicher Forschung, um das Bild der überlegenen Sowjetunion aufrecht zu erhalten. Das propagandistische Lügengebäude von Chernobyl fällt in »Chernobyl« vor unseren Augen in sich zusammen.

Valery Legasov (Jared Harris) und Boris Shcherbina (Stellan Skarsgård) müssen ihr handeln vor Ort politisch rechtfertigen. Nicht zuletzt veranschaulicht die Mini-Serie wie kaum eine andere das Verhältnis von Politik und Wissenschaften im Katastrophenfall. Das betrachtet man angesichts der weltweiten Corona-Pandemie natürlich mit einem anderen Auge. Die Expertenrolle von Valery Legasov hat in Deutschland aktuell der Berliner Virologe Christian Drosten inne (wenngleich Drosten seine Funktion als Experte in einer demokratischen Gesellschaft deutlich offensiver nach außen tragen kann), die von Boris Shcherbina könnte grob formuliert die von Jens Spahn sein. Anhand des Verhältnisses von Shcherbina und Legasov kann man nun beobachten, was es heißt, wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse in politische Aussagen zu übersetzen. Kompromiss und die Wahl des zweckmäßigsten Mittels – insbesondere bei fehlenden Alternativen – sind hier die Zauberworte.

Polyband Medien 2019. 312 Minuten. 12,99 Euro (DVDV). 19,99 (Blu-ray) Zudem wird deutlich, dass Wissenschaft – vor allem im Katastrophenfall – nur durch nüchterne Analyse und Kooperation funktioniert. Man kann nur hoffen, dass Drosten – dem die ihm medial unterstellte Heilsbringer-Funktion selbst unangenehm ist – aus seinem fachlichen Umfeld ähnliche Unterstützung erreicht wie Legasov während seines Einsatzes in Chernobyl. Ulana Khomyuk repräsentiert als fiktive Symbolfigur zahlreiche Wissenschaftler, die Legasov nach dem Reaktorunfall berieten. Hätten die ihre Ableitungen und Erkenntnisse in den Tagen und Wochen der Katastrophe nicht geteilt, wären die Ausmaße und Folgen der Reaktorkatastrophe in Chernobyl noch einmal völlig andere gewesen. Menschen wir diesen Wiwssenschaftlern, aber auch den unzähligen namenlosen Personen, die sich – wissend und unwissend – unmittelbar oder auf lange Sicht geopfert haben, setzt dieser Film ein Denkmal.

Ausgabe 44 des Film- und Medienmagazins CARGO enthält ein umfangreiches Gespräch von Christian Petzold und Simon Rothöhler über »Chernobyl«. Was ist der Preis der Wahrheit? Diese Frage steht am Anfang von Rencks Serie, die damit beginnt, wie Valery Legasov seine Beobachtungen und Erkenntnisse der Ereignisse in Chernobyl auf Tonbänder spricht. Am Ende seiner Aufnahmen, die in der Sowjetunion unter Wissenschaftlern kursierten, fragt er nicht mehr nach dem Preis der Wahrheit, sondern dem der Lüge. »Jede Lüge, die wir erzählen, geht zu Lasten der Wahrheit. Doch die Wahrheit verschwindet deshalb nicht. Der Wahrheit ist egal, was wir wollen oder brauchen. Sie wird für alle Zeiten auf uns lauern«, hört man ihn am Ende von den Bändern sprechen. Erinnerung und Zukunft haben eines gemein(sam). Beides endet im Staub.
