Meet the salp chain
Salps are gelatinous animals that live in the open ocean, but are closely related to the "sea squirts" (tunicates) seen in tidepools. Colonial salps often form long chains, with new animals budding off from others in the chain. They can reach up to 15m long and are one of the fastest-growing animals on the planet. Salps rhythmically contract their bodies to propel themselves through the ocean and pump water through their guts, filtering out microscopic algae and other tiny organisms for food. They play an essential role in mitigating climate change as their fecal pellets are full of carbon and sink rapidly to the sea floor, sequestering that carbon for decades or even centuries to come.
The salp chain you see here is the rarely observed, Helicosalpa virgula. It was captured on camera by our remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Doc Ricketts 282 meters (925 feet) deep.

Fife Coastal Path, St Monans to Pitemween.
Quite an intersting stretch, steeped in history, among these pics are the remains of the salt works. In the late 1700,s, after wool and fish, salt was Scotland's third biggest export, and the Fife coast was the main source of the product. Further west, at Dysart, Pan Ha' bears the name of the industry, Panning being the method used so the name came from the many salt pans that once lay nearby.
Further east on the coastal path evidence remains of the Salt Pans at St Monans, along here there is a new company, founded in 2019, that still exports salt, The Eat Neuk Salt company. Using a combination of traditional and modern methods, ENSC creates 100% organically hand-harvested Scottish sea salt flakes using the finest Grade A waters sourced from the coast of the East Neuk in Fife.
Back in the day most coastal communities that had access to coal were involved in the industry: coal was needed to heat the evaporation pans where water from the sea was boiled into sea salt. The windmill at St Monans—the last remaining windmill in Fife—was used to pump sea water into the salt pans, which were then heated by local coal.
Also in this part of the walk we have St Monans outdoor tidal pool. Hewn out of the rocky coast, the pool is ringed by man-made walls and access points which naturally replenish with a fresh cascade of seawater. The pool is no longer maintained , as a warning signs tells us, and bathers are warned they use the pool at their own risk. While I was there a golden labrador/retrriever called Ruby was enjoying the waters.
Above this point is St Monans Windmill, the interior of which is currently closed until further notice., so I didn't bother climbing the hill to inspect it further. This windmill dates from 1772 when, as I mentioned earlier, was constructed as part of a salt panning enterprise. This entailed extraction of salt from seawater, a business established by Sir John Anstruther. At this time salt was a valuable commodity used for food preservation when refrigeration did not exist.

Today on CHUNK! FUNK! GUNK! We rate
the SALP:
10/10 Chunk
10/10 Funk
9/10 Gunk
WOAh-
Look at these guys!! And I thought that the Longnose Lancetfish looked like something out of Subnautica…
They’re little jelly dudes, no bones. Technically they fall more under squishy or gelatinous than they do ‘chunky’, but not having bones gives them a lot of points (Plus I very much want to hold one in my hand). High chunk. Looking at these guys, they’re so very unique and their behavioral patterns are really interesting! High funk. Finally, they are little jelly dudes, of course they have gunk! In addition to that, they also secrete nets made of mucous in order to eat, so they most certainly are gunky. To be honest, I can’t figure out if they’re gunky enough for a maximum gunk rating. They’re definitely slimy and they definitely MAKE mucous, but I feel like a creature should secrete SLIME in order to get a full 10/10 gunk. Then again, I’m just not sure! What do you guys think?
Overall: 10/10
I want to hold one. I think they would feel like peeled grapes.
Oh! Fun fact from my research: these guys are NOT related to jellyfish! They’re actually closely related to people, since they’re in the family of “animals with backbones”.
(I mean, they don’t really HAVE backbones anymore, but nobody’s perfect.)
Oh! Btw! More photos!
vv I made this :) vv

Mermay 10 - Mesopelagic Salp Mermaid from @renthony's prompts.
From Wikipedia: A salp (plural salps, also known colloquially as “sea grape”) or salpa (plural salpae or salpas[2]) is a barrel-shaped, planktonic tunicate in the family Salpidae.
The reference for this image is an outline trace from SenshiStock on Deviantart - thanks to @stuck-in-hawkins who's Tumblr post I saw recently!
I'm trying to get over myself with references - I'm not good at drawing people and I need to learn.

Salps!
These jelly creatures are actually some of the closest relatives of vertebrates! Descended from sea squirts that became free-swimming again, all of the world's oceans have been invaded by these alien-looking organisms!
They have mastered their cloning ability to an incredible extent, with a single salp being able to reproduce and form chains of hundreds of individuals, floating in the middle of the ocean! Their life cycle is actually pretty unique, alternating solitary, sexually reproducting individuals with giant clone chains!

hi! i adore all of ur fics but especially seven prayers to seven archons it's definitely my favourite genshin fanfic ever asdjfk as someone who's attempting to do something similar but for reverse 1999, could u please give some tips on characterization?? thank you!!
Thank you so much! Characterisation is something I spend a lot of time on and take a lot of pride in, and I am immensely proud of fics like Seven Prayers and Lynette in Repose and (spoilers!) the final act of No Bird an Island. I don't have a formal process for how I do characterisation but my recommendation is focusing on character voice.
Not voice as in "how do they talk"?, but voice as in "how do they think"?. (I tend to write from within their POV.)
What mental habits come so naturally to the character that they don't notice it half the time? (Perhaps Sonetto filters everything through "what would Vertin do?". Perhaps Lisa Minci measures every decision by how much time she spends standing. Perhaps Kaeya is constantly evaluating "am I safe with these people?".)
What's their baggage? What do their thoughts constantly drift back to despite their best efforts? (Is Kazuha haunted by his "failure" to save Tomo? Is Ningguang haunted by her painful childhood?)
What do they value?
What do they think common sense is?
This isn't the whole picture for characterisation. At best it's, like, 30% of it. But it's a good foundation to start from, because it tells you a lot about how they think, how they talk, how they decide.
Reading in-game dialogue or writing from that character helps a lot. Ditto listening to voice acting — although for R1999 the EN VAs often sound like Elder Scrolls NPCs (derogatory) so I'm not sure they're given much extra insight to work with.
If @fishareglorious ever releases their damned website then that will surely be a good resource :3

@tomnookishot
These are salps btw!
Phylum Chordata (aka the phylum with VERTEBRATES... disgusting), class Thaliacea, Order Salpida
They can come in a few shapes and sizes but these are colonial creatures (similar to Siphonophores like the Man whore but each individual is actually an individual, not a poorly defined organ/organism zooid)
They filter feed and are very silly. Chains can be longer than a blue whale because of course they are.
Anyways my hatred for them is mostly silly and mean spirited but if I'm going to be known for anything in the jelly community or jellyfish fandom, it's going to be my comical hatred of salps. And maybe comb jellyfish (beroe comb jellies scare me haha)
Btw, these are Pyrosomes (also known as fire bodies):
Same class, just in Order Pyrosomatida
They have a lovely bluish-green light display very characteristic of bioluminescent organisms and are very bright (just like the Periphylla jellyfish!)
Here's the image shown in Lisa Ann Gershwin's book! It's very pretty
When the photographer isn't making an effort to make them look pretty, I think they actually look kind of stupid, haha. But isn't that the appeal of jellyfish? To look stupid?
anyways have a nice day lol
