Saw some art of sewn tongue!Anastasia and I agree it's likely the Ninth is the house of the jawless skull because John sewed her tongue after her failed ascension, but I've also been thinking about this recently because of ongoing discussion about saint relics and how quite a few relic skulls are jawless because, well, as I am intimately familiar with at this point, the mandible is only connected to the skull via joints and soft tissue. On a bare skull you'd need to pin or wire it. So a jawless skull is missing a part of itself, yes, but it's also missing what you could view as external support... or external interference. Fitting for a house that insists on standing on its own.

Not an art post (only because I don’t know enough about them yet to draw it) We don’t talk enough about how Anastasia’s cavalier is named after the literal original adversary the devil and how she’s named after a murdered princess (who is often mythologized to have escaped her fate)

She never walked West Stave alone. With the Dregs at her side, she could stroll by the Menagerie without a glance toward the golden bars on the windows. But tonight, her heart was pounding, and she could hear the roar of blood in her ears as the gilded facade came into view. ... Inej forced herself to look at the Menagerie as she passed. It’s just a place, she told herself. Just another house. How would Kaz see it? Where are the entrances and exits? How do the locks work? Which windows are unbarred? How many guards are posted, and which ones look alert? Just a house full of locks to pick, safes to crack, pigeons to dupe. And she was the predator now, not Heleen in her peacock feathers, not any man who walked these streets. As soon as she was out of sight of the Menagerie, the tight feeling in her chest and throat began to ease. She’d done it. She’d walked alone on West Stave, right in front of the House of Exotics. Whatever was waiting for her in Fjerda, she could face it. A hand hooked around her forearm and yanked her off her feet. Inej regained her balance quickly. She spun on her heel and tried to pull away, but the grip was too strong. “Hello, little lynx.” Inej hissed in a breath and tore her arm free. Tante Heleen. That was what her girls knew to call Heleen Van Houden or risk the back of her hand. To the rest of the Barrel she was the Peacock, though Inej had always thought she looked less like a bird than a preening cat. ... Inej’s vision blurred. Trapped. Trapped. Trapped again. ... Move, her mind screamed, but she couldn’t. Her muscles had locked up; a high whine of terror filled her head. ... Inej stood frozen, shaking. Then she dove into the crowd, eager to disappear. She wanted to break into a run, but she just kept moving steadily, pushing toward the harbor. As she walked, she released the triggers on the sheaths at her forearms, feeling the grips of her daggers slide into her palms. Sankt Petyr, renowned for his bravery, on the right; the slender, bone-handled blade she’d named for Sankta Alina on the left. She recited the names of her other knives, too. Sankta Marya and Sankta Anastasia strapped to her thighs. Sankt Vladimir hidden in her boot, and Sankta Lizabeta snug at her belt, the blade etched in a pattern of roses. Protect me, protect me. She had to believe her Saints saw and understood the things she did to survive. ... The run-in with Tante Heleen had left her shaken, and the heft of the daggers in her hands wasn’t enough to soothe her rattled nerves. She knew she should get used to carrying a pistol, but the weight threw off her balance, and guns could jam or lock in a bad moment. Little lynx. Her blades were reliable. And they made her feel like she’d been born with proper claws.

Saint Anastasia of Sirmium 275 - 303 Feast Day: December 25 Patronage: weavers, widows, martyrs, those suffering from poison
Saint Anastasia the Pharmakolytria, “Deliverer from Potions” was a Roman citizen. Her father was a pagan but her Christian mother secretly baptized and raised her Christian. St. Chrysogonus was also her teacher and advisor. After her mother’s death, her father gave her in marriage to a noble Roman named Publius, a pagan who abused her after he found out she was Christian. After Publius's untimely death she distributed her property to the poor and visited and cared for Christian prisoners. She was captured, imprisoned, condemned to death and burned alive during the Diocletian persecution. She is one of the 7 women mentioned in the Canon of the Mass and in Rome today, the second Christmas Mass is celebrated at St. Anastasia parish. {website}

Today we celebrate the Great Martyr Anastasia the Deliverer from Potions. Saint Anastasia was born in Rome to a pagan father and a secretly Christian mother. She was educated in the medical arts by a pious Christian named Chrysogonus. After her mother died, her father organised her to wed the pagan Publius. Anastasia consented but on their wedding night, she feigned illness and preserved her virginity. At night, Anastasia would often dress herself as a beggar and would visit the Christian prisoners, feeding them, attending to their medical needs, as well as even ransoming many. When Publius found out about this, he beat here severely and locked her up at home. After the death of her husband, she distributed her wealth to the poor and suffering. She then continued to visit the Christian prisoners from city to city. Because of her excellence in the medical arts, she was given the title Deliverer from Potions (Pharmakolytria), often healing many from the effects of poisons, potions, and other harmful substances. One day, when Anastasia had gone to one of the prisons, she found nobody there as the Emperor Diocletian had ordered the execution of all of them. She began to weep loudly and the guards realised she was a Christian and brought her before the prefect. The prefect attempted to entice her to deny her faith but she remained steadfast. A pagan priest was brought to defile her, but as soon as he touched her, he became blind and died soon after. Anastasia was then condemned to death by starvation, however some of the Martyrs she had acquainted would visit her every night and gave her courage. After sixty days, Anastasia was brought out and stretched between four pillars and burned alive. Her body remained unharmed by the fire and a pious Christian buried her relics.
