//The Nine Houses//
All my Necromancer and Cavalier Primary portraits together in one post. Now I guess it’s time to draw them some bodies or something!
“What do Marta the Second, Naberius the Third, Jeannemary the Fourth, Magnus the Fifth, Camilla the Sixth, Protesilaus the Seventh, Colum the Eighth, and Gideon the Ninth all have in common?” You could have heard a hair flutter to the floor. Everyone stared, poker-faced, in the thick ensuing silence.
Magnus looked pleased with himself. “The same middle name!”

Not an art post (only because I don’t know enough about them yet to draw it) We don’t talk enough about how Anastasia’s cavalier is named after the literal original adversary the devil and how she’s named after a murdered princess (who is often mythologized to have escaped her fate)

Hey, western North Carolina needs any help you’re able to provide. I know there are a lot of pulls on peoples wallets and attention, but I figured I’d boost this anyway!
Thankfully I’ve heard back from most of my friends as people are starting to get service back, but so many folks have lost everything.
#I only lost a tree and a hunk of fence#also remember cash is storm prep too— one of my friends is unable to get gas or food because he doesn’t have cash at the house

How's everyone recovering from Helene?
I was lucky enough that the worst of it just barely missed me. Although, other places were less than lucky.
Here are some resources to help with the devastating flooding happening right now. I hope everyone stayed safe!

appalachia is devastated. towns i loved, towns i visited all the time, are gone. not damaged, GONE. they are leveled to the ground. there is nothing left but rubble and ruin. people are dead. appalachia is poor to begin with and relies on tourism for a lot of its income, and multiple of those tourist locations are just...gone.
my town is okay, but it's flooded and wrecked. trees are blocking all but one way out of our neighborhood. power lines are hanging limp in the roads. we've been without power for over 24 hours and will continue to be without power for likely another 24+. disabled people and poor people are GOING to die from this. gods save appalachia.
#my home has some minor damage#a big tree is down#but we are so blessed compared to the rest of WNC#PLEASE donate if you can to the folks who got it worse#I will post any resources I come across#I’m not doing well mentally about this btw so I doubt there will be more art or posts from me for a while

a protection medallion— and if the gorgon’s head doesn’t work, you will always have your teeth.
Personal art inspired by trauma and the many gorgons in the Met Museum open access collection (my favorite being a pottery stand signed by Ergotimos from 570BC).

FYI they patched her ears back in.
The Ringleader
Every game should have a necromancer drag queen ringleader of an interplanetary circus from now on. Peak fantasy. GOTY.
Based this a little more on some of VA Daniel Jacob/Vinegar Strokes looks because the in game model wasn’t giving enough face OR hair OR glitter for my personal preference.
Also isn’t it weird that Lucretius has rounded ears but the game calls them a high elf but they have the same staff as Ethel??! Hmmmm

whats with the whitewash
Usually I don’t take crit or commentary from anonymous posters seriously. But what I do take seriously is my responsibility as an artist to avoid whitewashing, and would never want someone to feel like I was disrespecting any person by lightening their skin tone.
Because of your vague comment I’m not entirely sure what this in regards to, but I’m assuming it’s my Vinesh/Cam doodle as it’s the only art with people in it that is getting notes rn.
So I’m going to go over my process in choosing colors when drawing a real person, and let you decide whether or not to continue consuming my work.
First, I search out multiple different reference pictures of the person, specifically looking for a couple things— different clothes/days (ideally different seasons if I can) different backgrounds at least mid/light/dark, and a pic in comparison to other folks. With athletes like Vinesh, she’s often under white stage or gym lights from above which is nice as an artist because it keeps that variable a little more consistent.
Skin tone is something that changes A LOT based on environment and time of year even with white folks, so you can’t just pick from one image—especially if you’re doing a different color bg in your final image. Below were mine. I knew I didn’t want to fuss with a bg since this was supposed to be a quick warmup, so I specifically looked for the bottom right one with a close-to-white bg (though it does have a bit of a red cast from something off screen)
Then, I decide how many colors I want for whatever I’m drawing— longer paintings I’ll color pick about 5 to start, but for short things like this I’ll go for 3. I also find comparing to other people helps me personally isolate the undertones of my subject. Thankfully Vinesh has plenty of wrestling pics I can use like this one against Japan’s Yui Susaki.
I usually like color picking from the neck or upper arm as these have less color variation than the face, joints, or hands. I find blurring areas of the image helps me get a more accurate/average color pick of each area.
Now for this doodle I did omit the darkest darks and lightest lights, but you can see below with the saturation removed the colors I selected are very close in value. especially in my white-ish BG pic. I’ve hilighted the areas of darkest darks where I chose to just use the mid-dark at the edges of these shadows. Adding those darkest shadows would definitely give more form to the image, but for a quick sketch I didn’t feel they were necessary.
Below is the pic with the darkest darks added in— figured if I was spending this much time showing my work I might as well add them.
Ultimately, it’s not my place as a white artist to absolve myself, or decide whether or not I’ve done harm with this drawing. Whitewashing and colorism are rampant in the art world, and I understand being on high alert for it. However, I hope you can see my thought process when choosing values, and that I did not choose lighter colors for the drawing than the reference pictures of the athlete herself.
