Fire Safety Tips!
Tumblr media
Photo of the recent fire my family members were rescued from! Thank you Fire Fighters! Due to my families recent scary brush with an apartment building fire, I have been looking up general fire safety tips and as well as tips specific to electrical outlet fires. I wanted to write and share what I found as well - this list is a mix of stuff I found online, stuff my parents taught me, and things I learned through safety videos in my various workplaces - so please spread this around! It could help save lives!
Note: This list is made by a USA resident so some things may be different in other countries. A good example is your emergency number to call in case of fire, make sure you know the right one for your country! In the USA it's 911.
Also, if I goofed up and any electricians or firefighters are here reading this, please let me know so I can fix any errors. Last thing I want is to spreading misinformation about safety, there's enough of that crap going around on the internet.
The list is below the divider!
If your house has gutters outside, clean them so flying embers can't get in and ignite the clutter.
Have an emergency bag ready for if you need to quickly leave your home. Important items often include computers or hard drives with personal work or data stored on them, identification documents like passports and birth certificates, deeds, titles, and ownership paperwork, valuable art or collections, and anything of personal value like family photo albums. Invest in an external hard drive to backup your computer, and keep the hard drive with the rest of your valuable. Also consider archiving your important files online in case you lose your computer/hard drives. Likewise, consider making copies of family photos.
Shut off your air conditioning when you're not home.
Regularly cut your grass and clean up debris in the yard.
always have some water ready to put of small fires. But be careful! Throwing water on certain kinds of fires can make it WORSE, such as with a grease fire, which can cause hot grease to spatter at you.
Buy a fire extinguisher! Be attentive to type of fire extinguisher you use. Different lettered extinguishers are designed for different kinds of fires. ABC fire extinguishers are a good general type to get.
Don't leave a stove unattended!
Don't leave your dryer unattended while it's running. Clean the lint filter regularly.
Power strips and extension cords are handy, but if you go too overboard with them they can present a fire hazard, so take it easy on them. Try to unplug whatever gadgets you aren't using at the time.
Don't leave a lit candle unattended!
Keep your kitchen tidy.
Keep space heaters away from cloth and clothing. Turn them off before leaving a room.
Test your smoke alarms monthly. Replace smoke detectors every 10 years.
Keep the area around the dryer free of flammable items.
Check all your cords and wires for damage.
Avoid blocking the air vents on a laptop. These are located on the back and sides. put the laptop on a hard surface, not cloth.
Don't place anything on top of a radiator.
Keep large newspaper stacks away from any flammable materials
If you smoke, do so outside, make sure your ash trays are sturdy, and soak your cigarette butts in water before disposing of them
Also soak matches in water before throwing them away!
Dust your home regularly.
Don't put glassware near a window, the light passing through it could have "magnifying glass" laser effect.
If you get home and smell gas, DO NOT TURN ON ANY LIGHTS. If there is a gas leak this could be enough to spark an explosion.
If you can, get an electric stove instead of a gas stove, they're generally safer.
Keep aerosols such as spray paint bottles away from heat sources.
DON'T PUT GASOLINE IN A GARBAGE BAG! This one should be obvious, but people have done it….sighs
Keep a pan lid or baking sheet nearby while cooking, if a fire starts, covering the pan might help smother the fire.
Try to use LED lighting where you can, they don't get as hot as other types of light bulbs can.
If an electrical fire starts, flip your circuit breakers and turn off the power in your home.
Don't throw water on an electrical fire!
When you unplug things, pull on the plug and not the chord. Tugging the chord itself can damage it over time and become a fire hazard. Also be mindful of this when picking up items (don't pick a laptops power brick up by it's chord, for example). Doing this can not only help prevent fires but can also decrease wear and tear on your gadgets.
Check for flickering lights or scorch marks on power outlets. if you find any, it may be a good idea to get a professional electrician to take a look at your home.
Never use an extension cord with a major appliance like a dryer.
Be careful about putting nails or tacks in your walls, if you hit a wire, that could become a future fire hazard!
On your dryer, Make sure the air exhaust vent pipe is not restricted or crushed against the wall.
Clean your pans regularly, to prevent the buildup of grease that could potentially catch fire.
Plan an outside meeting spot with your family or roommates so in the event of a fire you can all quickly gather and make sure everyone got out safely.
If a doorknob feels hot during a fire, don't open it, as it could mean a fire is on the other side. Opening it could cause an air vacuum, throwing the flames right at you!
If there is a fire, stay low to the ground to avoid breathing smoke.
Many fire departments in the USA will install a smoke detector for free! After acquiring one, if you feel unsure about your ability to install it properly, give them a call!
if your home has more than 1 floor, put escape ladders in the upstairs rooms.

I'm wondering if, as a society who cares about vulnerable people, we could stop saying "traumatize" when we truly mean "upset"?
I am sick of hearing sad books or movies "traumatize" their readers. I simply do not believe that happens. A traumatic experience might be adjacent to books (I have vivid memories of books I was reading around certain experiences and even how the contents of those books affected my processing of the experiences). But it's not caused by the book. And, y'know. The weather is Christofascist Censorship Attempts outside.
Meanwhile from the other side I continue to be surprised at just how badly people fail to understand trauma and traumatic experiences in general. Watering down the term isn't helping. Find other hyperbole to express that The Bridge to Terebithia gutted you, chewed on your heartstrings, and made you cry your first pair of contact lenses right out of your preteen eyes.
(ETA here although it's impossible to edit reblogs: over the months since this post really took off, there has been valuable discussion in the comments. I stand by the passion with which I wrote this post and with the general message, but not all the exact wording. I talk more about the way I'd re-write this post in a response here, replying to an addition that added a ton of useful context [other additions touched on similar themes, but that person had it all together in one reblog]. With that said, I am muting this post.)

Love and Obsession: The Tim Drake Way
part 2
Everyone in the Batfamily knows Tim Drake has… issues with boundaries. They’ve spent years trying to teach him what’s appropriate and what’s—well—deeply unsettling and completely invasive. To be fair, he’s learned. Mostly. He doesn’t stalk his family anymore (much), and he no longer pulls up files on every single person they talk to (okay, maybe just sometimes). But it’s progress.
But then Tim starts dating Danny Fenton. And, oh boy, a few screws come loose.
It starts small, as always. Just little things. Tim’s a detective, after all—background checks are second nature. Danny’s living in Gotham, and Gotham isn’t safe. So, really, what’s the harm in knowing a little more about Danny’s friends? And his professors? And maybe also his classmates? It’s just standard protocol. Okay?
“Tim, you’ve run a full dossier on my entire biology class?” Danny asks one day, laughing as he flips through a file on the coffee table. Tim shrugs. “What if one of them is dangerous?” “Pretty sure the most dangerous thing in that class is the midterm.”
Danny doesn’t think much of it. He’s a little flattered, even. Tim’s protective. It’s sweet.
But Tim’s mind doesn’t stop there. Danny’s too handsome. Too charming. What if someone tries to hurt him? What if someone tries to take him away? It’s not obsessive—it’s just concern. So, a tracker on Danny’s phone? Necessary. Cameras in his apartment? Standard. Monitoring his sleeping patterns and hangout spots? Logical.
Tim tells himself it’s love. And maybe a little insecurity.
“You have a tracker on his phone?” Dick asks, trying not to sound alarmed. Tim nods, like it’s the most normal thing in the world. “Of course. What if something happens to him?” “And the cameras?” “Safety.” “The background checks on his professors?” “Gotham U isn’t exactly known for its stellar staff, Dick.”
It doesn’t stop there. Tim knows everything. Danny’s eating habits, his favorite places to go when he’s stressed, his childhood allergies. Tim’s mapped out Danny’s entire life. He knows about Danny’s ghost powers too—of course he does. He’s Tim Drake. The moment he realized Danny was Phantom, it just… clicked.
Danny being half-ghost? That’s just one more reason to worry. Tim’s up late at night, watching for any signs of ectoplasmic interference. He tracks the energy spikes. He monitors Danny’s fights.
He doesn’t think Danny knows. He’s terrified of what will happen if he finds out.
But then he does.
One evening, Danny walks into Tim’s apartment and casually drops a folder on the table. Tim’s heart stops.
“What’s this?” Danny asks, raising an eyebrow. Tim swallows hard. “I… it’s just…” “You’ve been tracking me?” Danny opens the file, glancing through pages of surveillance reports, background checks, even analysis of his ectoplasmic energy. Tim feels like his world is about to shatter.
“I… I can explain,” Tim says, his voice tight. “I’m just… worried about you. You’re in danger all the time, and I—” Danny walks over, cupping Tim’s face in his hands. Tim braces for the worst.
But Danny just smiles. “Can I put a tracker on you too?”
Tim blinks. “What?” Danny kisses his cheek. “If you’re watching my back, it’s only fair I watch yours. I need to make sure you’re safe too.”
Tim stares at him, speechless. Danny doesn’t look scared. Or angry. He looks… fond. Like Tim’s obsessive tendencies aren’t a problem at all.
“I’ve never had someone care about me this much,” Danny says softly. “I trust you with my life, Tim. This? This just proves how serious you are.”
Tim thinks he’s just fallen deeper in love.
-------------------
The Batfamily? They’re worried.
Jason corners Tim in the cave. “Okay, so let me get this straight. You’ve got cameras in his apartment. You’ve mapped out his entire life. You’ve got a tracker on him and a heartbeat monitor. And he’s… fine with it?” Tim nods, a dreamy smile on his face. “Yeah. He even wants to put a tracker on me.” “That’s not… healthy, Tim,” Dick says carefully. “That’s—” “It’s mutual,” Tim interrupts. “We’re protecting each other.”
Bruce pinches the bridge of his nose. “Tim, this isn’t how relationships are supposed to work.” Tim shrugs. “It’s how ours works.”
Damian watches the whole thing with narrowed eyes. “This is deeply unsettling,” he mutters.
They try to talk to Danny. Intervention style. They invite him over, sit him down, and gently (or not so gently) try to explain that Tim’s behavior isn’t normal.
Danny just laughs. “You guys do know I’m half-ghost, right?” “That doesn’t mean—” Dick starts. “I spent my entire life being hunted by ghost hunters. I’ve had worse invasions of privacy.” Danny smiles. “Tim cares. He keeps me safe. That’s all I need.”
The bats don't quite know what to say.
-------------------
Tim and Danny, two slightly unhinged souls who think mutual surveillance is the ultimate act of love.
The bats? They’re just trying to keep up.
(“At least they’re happy?” Barbara offers weakly. Bruce sighs. “For now.”)
Gotham’s version of love was never going to be normal. But this? This is a whole new level.

2024. The year of the fire shield. 🔥
This was my second year performing with fire, and I had a lot of fun incorporating the sword and shield into my art.
A huge thank you to all the fire folks who have welcomed me until the flow community, including those at Ignition Fire troupe, Fire Camp, all my PNW flowmies, and everyone else i had the pleasure of meeting this year. It's so heartwarming being a part of this art community. 🧡
Thank you to all the photographers who helped capture the moments including EspressoBuzz, Vitz Photography, IRDeep Photography, Jason Surh, and htj2 Photography.
And, thank you to my fellow flow artists shown in these photos, including Ash Steel and Sterling Bishop.
May you all stay safe this 2025 and find inspiration in the world around you.
