and the intro scenes are a mixed bag in terms of terror

rosamund is kind of freaky with the vines and the dead princes, but then we have gerard’s, which is very amusing. pib’s is also pretty funny. mother goose’s is dark bc his son is dead, but they still joke about the gander

then we get to ylfa. and brennan and emily show the darkest and saddest origin story i have ever seen for little red riding hood. a little girl, lost in every way possible, confused and alone and scared, begging her mother to let her in, and her mother refuses. her mother says that her daughter is dead and gone and a monster stands in her place. ylfa doesn’t want to be a monster. she wants to go home. but she is different, and her home turns on her, and that betrayal turns her on them. she huffs and she puffs and she blows the family that left her for dead away

and pinocchio. pinocchio whose mother is a shadow in a doorway. pinocchio who became a boy by being good, only to lose that gift by lying to save his father. pinocchio who loves his father enough to lie, and must now keep on lying to serve a woman he has never even looked in the eyes

there’s something very fitting about the children in this fairy tale land having the most horrifying stories. those stories about children straying from the path or needing to never tell a lie or misbehave in order to be real, they’re meant as warnings. be good, children, or you’ll never have the respect that adults get. be good, or the monsters in the shadows will come for you. be good, or you’ll die

in a season that was meant to be horror but was subverted by the players knowing the theme, i appreciate even more the darker corners of the story

Gortash, who escapes the Hells after years of torture, and hires Karlach (a red tiefling) as his bodyguard because better the devil you know.

Karlach, late teens, orphaned and trying to find her place in the city, imprinting on Gortash (a thug from the Lower City, making his way up on the world) like a baby duckling, ignoring the parade of red flags.

Them working together well and getting along, despite opposite personalities and morals, because Gortash (who grew up unloved by his parents and abused by devils) enjoys being the object of Karlach's earnest, honest flattery and loyalty too much, and Karlach (poor street urchin with little to no formal education) sees Gortash scheme with politicians and criminals, design clockwork machines, and climb the social ladder with ease, and thinks the sun shines out of his ass.

If Gortash keeps the worst of his dealings hidden from Karlach, well, that's just good business sense. She's still young and green, she'll toughen up as she grows older and the reality of the world grinds her optimisim to dust. And if Karlach turns a blind eye to her boss' cruel streak, to the boxes of smuggled weapons coming in and out of the warehouses, and the dead bodies floating down the Chiontar, it's because they probably did something to deserve it, after all Gortash has been nothing but good to her.

Maybe Gortash starts to wonder if a little bit of goodwill could be leveraged to achieve more power. After all, a couple of kind words and small favours have worked wonders to ensure Karlach's loyalty. Maybe he can allow himself a kindness or two, ease the leash, raise the boot, just a smidge. Only for the harshness of reality to slap him in the face once again, the deal falls through, his enemies gain ground, he loses money and men, his plan pushed back, because he, for one instant, believed Karlach's rainbow coloured worldview.

So he tightens his grip on power even more, doubles down on his cruelty, and decides: Karlach must go. And when Zariel offers her deal, a soul for an ongoing supply of infernal steel, he sells her off without hesitation.

my thogths while reading the Yangchen novels (the legacy of Yangchen) pt 2

I admit, as obvious and cute as it was since the first book, i havent get the appeal of Yangchen and Kavik before

BUT NOW I GET IT

They are fucking adorable

Just love this part when Kavik is willing to do basically anything for Yangchen (without even thinking about it) even when Yangchen is openly hating him, he just like "its fair, at least im still here"

And Yangchen is like "of corse, he wants to swing his way to my team to get better infomation" and so (a little out of petty) puts him to follow Jujinta and "watch Jujinta's rear"

And he get SO angry

It's also funny bcs Aiwei was confirmed gay so I want every male character with the syllable "wei" in their name to be gay because that would be funny.

Gosh, night shift is really something. Interestingly enough, the night shift itself was pretty much just fine? Probably because the emergency department is a pretty active place and it's also very bright in there! But now it's 7:30pm, I've gotten nine and a half hours of sleep (woke up at 5pm), my next shift starts at 9pm, and for some reason I'm dead-sleepy once again! Pbttt.

Anyway, so far I've learned that while night shift is very definitively not my thing but also that when I prepare properly it's not anywhere near as horrible as I felt last time I had to do one (which didn't even offset me by as much as this, because it was a 6p to 4a, not a 9p to 7a). I remember getting a full eight-nine hours of sleep and still waking up nauseated.

I only have three night shifts during my month of ED peds and this is because there's legal limits to how much time we have to have between a day and night shift, they have to give us at least one day off per week (every week, which is ED-specific - normally it's "averaged across four weeks"), and because I'm in Family Medicine, I spend two full days each week doing non-ED things (1.5 days clinic and then one afternoon of didactic). In the long run this does mean that I have 4 full days more of work than the non-FM people rotating in the emergency department......... but I'll take it, because every non-FM person I've asked has 7-9 night shifts, haha. I enjoy clinic!

Also, shoutout to our hospital for opening the cafeteria from 11pm to 2am for all the night shift people. Genuinely blessed shit.

Anyway, that was the first proper overnight of my entire life! I've never even pulled an all-nighter before.
