Just Down The Street
word count: 1050 || avg. reading time: 4 mins.
pairing: post-time skip Ushijima x chubby!Reader
genre: fluff
warnings: spoilers
request: watching Goosebumps with caramel popcorn, dressed as a pirate || fluffy, going trick or treating with crush Ushijima
Being a cool aunt came with a whole lot of responsibilities. Most of it was the usual of showing up at school plays in outfits that would put any opera-goer to shame, covertly slipping the kids extra pocket money, or rolling up in your freshly polished convertible to pick them up from soccer practice when their parents were busy. But around the holidays more tasks emerged, like taking your niece and nephew trick or treating while their parents were stuck at a work function.
The boy was dressed as Pikachu and his older sister wore the black dress and blank expression of Wednesday Addams. You joined your niece as Morticia, with a long black evening gown that clung tightly to your curves and your corgi by your side dressed as a fish befitting his name.
Originally, you would have left your dog at home to enjoy some peace and quiet after the long hours of playing with the kids but even though you loved him dearly, you didn't trust that sly weasel with an empty home filled with decorations and possibly easily reachable chocolates stashed by not so innocent children's hands.
It was late afternoon and typical for Halloween the sun had already gone down. The first groups of children and chaperones wandered along the sidewalks next to the neatly trimmed lawns of your neighborhood. The street was mostly inhabited by lawyers and doctors and architects, in short, plenty of potential prospects to make your mother ask during every phone call if there was someone on the horizon for you. Usually, you ignored that question, opting instead to silently ponder about the man living in house number 15 with the gorgeous Japanese pine out front and a large pool in the back. You had seen him around the grocery store every so often, inspecting the fresh shiny produce or loading up on a new sack of rice that he effortlessly lifted into the cart. A few times before, he had helped you get something off a high shelf with a polite nod and once at a coffee shop he had paid for your new drink because you dropped the first one just outside the door. And maybe, once or twice, you had stood by your kitchen window, absently nibbling on an apple, waiting for him to run past your home on his morning jog.
When you had seen him on TV during the Olympics this year you had let out a short yelp that had Fish look at you in concern.
The unmovable and kind Olympian neighbor quickly became your crush and you racked your brain trying to think of ways to ask him out.
“Okay munchkins, be cool.”, you told the kids as you headed up the short walkway to number 15’s front door.
They both nodded and your niece rang the bell.
A few moments later the Ushijima Wakatoshi opened, dressed comfortably in dark sweatpants and a gray shirt, holding up a large bowl of what seemed to be expensive French pralines.
“Trick or-“, but before the kids managed to get all the way through the short phrase, Fish spotted a black Shiba Inu strutting down the corridor behind his owner and tugged his leash out of your niece’s hand. In an admirable attempt to catch your dog, your nephew ran after him into Ushijima’s pristine home, and your niece right behind him to get both of them back outside. You and Ushijima just gaped after the chaotic procession racing left into the living room, back out into the corridor, and then right into the kitchen.
Quietly to himself Ushijima had hoped you would stop by today. He had seen you around the neighborhood with the two children plenty of times and although the sight had filled him with a numb lump of disappointment at first, it quickly disappeared once he overheard them calling you their aunt. He asked Tendou to send him some chocolates just in case you’d ring his bell and had kept them in a separate bowl by the door.
He couldn’t help but let his eyes wander for a moment over your tightly fitted dress before calling his dog. The little shadow raced around the corner, tiny paws making scratching sounds on the wooden floor and came to a halt in front of him. Fish’s turn wasn't as graceful. He slipped into the adjacent room before trotting back out, niece and nephew on his tail.
“Sorry.”, both kids bowed as they passed Ushijima Meanwhile, Fish made one last attempt to get the Shiba Inu to play but one stern mention of his name and he hopped over the threshold to be by your side again.
“I am so sorry.”, you also said, bowing as deeply as you could without the dress becoming a distracting issue.
Ushijima smiled and shook his head, dividing the pralines equally among the children whose eyes grew big as saucers at the bounty.
“No need to apologize.”, he said calmly.
With a nervous laugh, you turned the end of Fish's lead in your hands. “This would be so much easier if I had an extra arm. You know, one for each kid and one for the dog.”
“Oh, alright.”, Ushijima took a jacket from a hook and slipped into a pair of sneakers.
“What are you doing?”
“You said you need an extra hand.” And as if to drive his point across he raised both of his.
You blushed. You really didn't want him to think that you were guilt-tripping him into helping out. “This is not necess-”
“I was just about to take him for a walk anyway.”, Ushijima nodded to the well behaved pup still sitting at his feet, then looked back at you, “If you wouldn’t mind some company…?” He let the question hang in the air for a bit, wondering if the “subtle insinuation”-approach Tendou had taught him was not too vague.
“Oh!”, you said, “No, not at all! The more the merrier.”
Followed by his dog he stepped outside into the crisp fall air.
“Who are you dressed as?”, your nephew asked, frowning up at your neighbor about his non-existent costume.
The man was perplexed and halted as he fixed the collar of his jacket, then said, “Ushijima Wakatoshi. - Nice to make your acquaintance.”

Jason: Did I ever tell you about the time-
Thalia: stop right there.
Jason: why?
Thalia: whenever you say that phrase, I know that I’m about to hear the most horrific thing ever and I need to mentally steel myself.
Jason: I was just saying that when I was 5 I went for a swim in the river and it was really fun
Thalia: that was… surprisingly normal
Jason: and then I got caught and in trouble and got sewn into a sack of weasels and tossed into said river. Which is kinda extreme, because the normal punishment is bad but not that bad. One of the kids said they hope I drowned so I think the ye just wanted to kill me… lot of people really wanted me to die from ages 3 to like 7 to be honest

Waking up Buggy with morning head. It’s something you all agreed towards beforehand and he was especially exited at the prospect, so imagine his delight when he one day wakes up to gentle kisses that start at his balls and end at the head of his cock. Amazing.
He spreads his legs a little to accommodate his cocksucking alarm clock a little bit more, feeling a hand reach up to gently cradle his sack a little before taking him in deeper. His hand fists into the dishelved, slightly greasy bedhead under the cover.
He feels like an emperor. No! Like the King of the pirates himself, as he slowly starts bucking up into that warm, hot mouth. You casually light a blunt for him and hand it over. Could this morning get any-
- Wait.
Your eyes meet and you smile at him. You, sitting next to him in bed and handing him a joint, you, currently NOT blowing cock right now.
He throws away the covers to see who’s currently sucking at his foreskin oh so sweetly, only to be met by the teasing gaze of a redhead. The bane of his existence ever since they were kids, the dumbest guy he ever met, the annoyingly optimistic, affectionate red haired tomcat that somehow managed to weasel himself into his and your shared bed for a little ménage à trois ever so often.
„Shanks arrived at shore just yesterday.“ You say casually, lazily tracing circles on your clowns chest. „He said that he’d bet 1000 berries that he could make you cum before you woke up.“ the man between Buggys legs makes an exaggerated popping noise as his lips leave Buggys dick. „Yepp. Seems like I lost.“
You lean over conspicuously „I bet 2000 berries that you could make him come without even touching his dick. Think you can help me win?“
Both you and Buggy leave the bedroom 3000 berries richer that morning, along with a very satisfied captain of the red force, who somehow regained most of his stamina in about ten minutes and is now already getting on Buggys nerves. „Come on it’s not that far away!“ „Some of us have THINGS to do you burnout.“ „Come ooon, it’ll be just like old times!“ „Oh? With you not paying YOUR TAB?“ and so on and so forth.
You snort and roll your eyes as head below deck to set up a kettle for coffee. Seems like today would be fun.
WOAH. ANON.
An agreement like that really is win-win-win. And this was a possibility when everyone agreed...
WC: ~250 Warnings: nsfw, buggy x shanks x gn!reader, oral - m receiving, implied sex
Would Buggy ever voluntarily ask for a threesome with that red-headed annoyance? No, but he would be more than willing to reap the benefits. Shanks is always disgustingly eager to show how to pleasure the clown captain.
Sometimes just the memory of Shanks' hand on the back of your head, and your mouth full of dick was enough for Buggy to get off on his own.
Shanks could have definitely gotten Buggy to cum before waking up. Unfortunately, the bet did not have a clause preventing you from milking the pirate clown's balls dry the night before.
As for the second bet, Shanks was more than okay forking over 2000 berries for all the sweet and salty attention he could squeeze from you and Buggy. He'd gladly listen to you goad both captains, walking the line between teasing and innocent comments. He'd take all of the delicious praise Buggy wrapped in snark.
"Ooh, listen to his voice get higher when you touch him like that."
"That's such a slutty noise. You really want me to know how good you feel, huh?"
"Mmh, you're gripping too hard, Shanks, it's coming off as desperate."
"He is desperate- Look, his mouth is busy and he's still whining."
Yup. What a good way to start the day.
Follow it with a heavy breakfast (brunch by this time) and spiked drinks, and the next few days were going to be just as messy and fun.

Petronius Maximus --- The dipshit Roman emperor who caused the sack of Rome because he was an arrogant dipshit.
Petronius Maximus was a wealthy Roman politician born in 397 AD to old Roman money. Like many wealthy Romans he went into politics and throughout the early 5th century climbed the ranks of Roman government until he became one of the most powerful men in the Western Roman Empire. He was crafty and he was ambitious. He was also a dipshit and an asshole.
By the 450's P. Maximus had a clear plan, to create a power vacuum in Rome that he could cunningly fill. He began by turning the emperor at the time, Valentinian III, against his magister militum Flavius Aetius. As magister militum Aetius was commander of the Roman Army, and had proven himself a master tactician and brilliant diplomat. Through military victories and diplomacy Aetius was barely holding a crumbling empire together. Maximus convinced Valentinian III that Aetius was looking to usurp his throne. Thus in 454 Valentinian summoned Aetius to his palace and personally murdered him with his sword. Maximus had organized the death of the most talented Roman official in the empire, which in the grand scheme of things was probably a big mistake. With Aetius dead, Maximus expected he would take Aetius' place as magister militum. However Valentinian refused to appoint him as magister militum. Thus in 455 AD, Maximus had him assassinated, hiring two of Aetius' bodyguards to do the deed as revenge.
Several powerful Romans claimed the Imperial throne but Maximus managed to beat them all to the punch by taking over the Imperial Palace and immediately marrying Valentinian's widow, Licinia Eudoxia. Licinia didn't know Maximus had murdered her husband at the time but had suspicions. He also forced her daughters, Placidia and Eudocia to marry his sons. Through deceit and murder Maximus had managed to weasel his way into the Roman Imperial family and was now creating his own Imperial dynasty. Thus Petronius Maximus had become Emperor Dipshit, ruler of the shiny turd of what was left of the Western Roman Empire.
Problem was, when Emperor Dipshit married off Placidia and Eudocia to his sons, he canceled Eudocia's arranged marriage to Hunneric, who was the son of Geiseric, king of the Vandals. The Vandals were a Germanic tribe that had set up a prosperous kingdom in the former Roman province of North Africa, and were constantly raiding the Italian coast. Valentinian had arranged the marriage of Eudocia as a peace offering to Geiseric. Geiseric had received a letter from Eudoxia informing him that Maximus had killed her husband and was canceling the marriage of Eudocia. Geiseric was enraged at Empror Dipshit for canceling the marriage, and sent a Vandal fleet and army to Rome in response. "No problem" said Emperor Dipshit, "we got the Roman Army".
Except there was no Roman Army. Not really. After the death of Aetius the remains of the standing full time professional army had collapsed almost completely. Even Aetius was very dependent on mercenaries and allies. Nobody wanted to enlist in the Roman Army in the 5th century, with Romans going so far as to cut off their own fingers to avoid conscription. The Roman economy was a mess, the Imperial bureaucracy was riddled with corruption, the life of the average Roman was miserable, and by the 5th century most Roman emperors were snobbish, over-privileged, incompetent out of touch dipshits. The empire was dying and everybody knew it. Few believed it was worth saving, and nobody wanted to die for a dipshit emperor such as Emperor Dipshit. By 455 AD what was left of the Roman Army consisted of militia units called "limitanei" who acted as border patrolmen far away from Rome. For more complex military operations the Romans were fully dependent on mercenaries and allies. Emperor Dipshit attempted to enlist the help of the Visigoths, but they were like, "LMFAO nooo, you made your bed now lie in it!" I speculate they knew Maximus was a dipshit who was probably gonna get them all killed.
Emperor Dipshit knew it was a hopeless situation, so he made an announcement to the Roman people to flee and save themselves, then he too turned tail and fled. He was spotted by a large group of Roman refugees, who formed a mob and beat him to death. Good riddance. Emperor Dipshit's glorious reign lasted 77 days.
As far as sackings go the sack of Rome in 455 AD wasn't too bad. The Vandals were Christians, so the Pope was able to convince them not to do the more horrible things like rape and murder civilians, or burn down the city. So for the most part the Vandals refrained from bloodshed and arson. However they did take as many Romans into slavery as they could fit on their ships, and they also looted the city of almost everything of value. Even the bronze tiles on the roof of the Temple of Jupiter were pried off and carted away. Also Geiseric carted off Eudocia and married her off to his son Huneric.
The Vandal's sack of Rome in 455 is where we get the term "vandalism" today. Also did I mention that Petronius Maximus was a dipshit?

The weasel kicked off his boots at the front door before opening it. As much as he couldn’t really help it, he didn’t want to cause Cat or Cooler any inconvenience with blood on the floor.

Here are some of my favorite fics from @lcdrarry 2024. Listed in alphabetical order.
Black Sheep by shushu_yaoi_lj / @orange-peony [10k]
“You know, Potter, maybe all you need to win is a little—incentive, let’s say.” “An incentive?” Harry asks, his interest piqued. He takes a step closer to the fence, and then another one, until he’s standing so close that he can smell the intoxicating scent of Malfoy’s expensive cologne. “Shall we say that if you win, you can have whatever your heart desires?” Malfoy replies with a smile. “Anything.”
A Ferret, a ScarHead, a Weasel, and a Baby by trishjames [91k]
They say becoming a parent is an unparalleled, priceless joy. Draco Malfoy finds himself putting that theory to the test when the star witness in his dangerous illegal potions case entrusts him with a powerful wish: protect her newborn baby at all costs. Now, it's up to Draco to fulfill that wish despite the looming threat of criminals hunting for the child. To think, just the day before, he was fretting over his inappropriate feelings for his annoying, bespectacled git of a housemate—not the mechanics of changing nappies! Thank Merlin it takes a village to raise a sack of flour, ah, child.
first, she fell by luminae [1k]
Harry's wife is dead. No one knows quite what that means.
Love Will Abide by @dodgerkedavra [39k]
Harry and Draco survive the apocalypse. This is what happens after.
Obscuro by stratigraphy [35k]
Draco is grieving. His conversation partner is here against his will. It's a shameless rip-off of an insipid Muggle reality dating show. Hardly the occasion for true love, if you ask Draco. feat. a cat named Marmalade, a bird named Mumble, Lee Jordan's answer to Love is Blind, and two best friends who only want their dads to be happy.
this strange effect by harDeehar [30k]
Harry hated his job, his cousin, and his inability to figure out how to fit into the boring, depressing world around him. He kept his peace until Draco Malfoy turned out to not be dead like Harry thought he was. Deadly, though? Harry was going to figure that out.
I hope you enjoy these stories as much as I did!

Being Human – Part 2
Pairing: Alec McDowell x F. Reader
Summary: Your life made sense before Alec slipped his way in. He unravels your threads without even trying. He frustrates you as easily as he weasels back into your good graces. But you soon realize that this man is worth the challenge.
AN: Thank you for your lovely responses on Part 1!! I'm very excited to bring you the next chapter of Being Human.
Chapter Summary: You know that Alec is hiding something, and it’s more than the fact that he’s been dating another girl behind your back. [Set during 2.11]
Song Inspo: “Sailing” by Avant
Word Count: 6,200
Tags/Warnings: 18+ only. Angst, two-timing (don’t worry), mentions of Manticore’s training (torture), hurt/comfort, mega feels, smuttishness.
💜 Series Masterlist
Part 2: The Only Place
Alec showing up at your door unannounced isn’t anything new.
This time, however, he comes bearing a raw chicken in a plastic bag and a sack of potatoes. Your eyes go wide as you let him into your apartment.
“Where the hell did you find that,” you gesture at the chicken. In this economy, it might as well have been a five-pound lobster with a side of caviar.
Alec waggles his brows at you and flashes his familiar grin.
“Farmer’s market,” he says. “I fought some rich lady and her Pomeranian for this.”
You extend “gimme gimme” fingers at the bag as you lick your lips. You two are going to eat good tonight. You can even use the bones to make soup for the rest of the week.
Still, something niggles at the back of your mind.
“But this must’ve been so expensive. You didn’t have to do this,” you say, looking up from the bag of goods to your boyfriend’s face. He gives you an easy smile as his arm hooks around your waist.
“Don’t worry about it. I won a few pool game bets off Sketchy. Not to mention a couple of his paychecks,” Alec says.
His smirk makes you shake your head, but you wonder if he’s telling you the truth. He always seems to have cash to spare, despite the fact that he’s only been working at Jam Pony for a few months—barely making minimum wage.
Regardless, you start to prepare the chicken with what seasonings you have in your pantry while Alec peels the potatoes for you. You glance at him out of the corner of your eye.
Not for the first time, you wonder how he really lives. You’ve never been to his apartment before. Despite being friends with Max (there seems to be history there), he just got to Seattle a few months ago. And as for family, he claimed he had to leave home.
“It was what you’d call…an unstable environment,” he’d said.
That, you could understand. Your own father had died when you were fairly young. After the Pulse, a virus had swept through and ravaged your hometown in rural Massachusetts.
Unfortunately, a shortage of antibiotics at the local hospitals left your mom without much help to fight off what ailed her body. You’d spread her ashes in the Charles River, where she used to love to paddleboat with you when you were a kid.
Then, you’d packed up what little you had and left the East Coast to make a life for yourself out here, alone. The city had been a challenge for you at first, being a smalltown girl at heart, but the hustle and bustle distracted you in a way you’d needed.
Now, Seattle has become your home, for better or worse.
Alec knows all of this about you. He knows about your guilty pleasure of fried eggs, rice, and Vienna sausages: one of the ultimate struggle meals. He knows you love ice cream so much, you’d eat it for breakfast if you could.
He also knows you wanted to be a veterinarian, of all things, before the pulse. Now you have no hope or prayer of ever affording college, even if you tried.
But Alec…he still largely remains a mystery to you, no matter how deep he’s wedged himself under your skin.
“You’re really concentrating on that chicken,” Alec says, but his voice startles you, as it’s suddenly very close to your ear. You jump slightly as his arms wrap around your frame from behind.
You giggle a little, but you tilt your head to allow him access when his lips find your neck.
“Have I thanked you for this yet?” you ask. “I can’t remember the last time I had honest to God poultry…that also didn’thave a 50% chance of being radioactive.”
You feel the shape of Alec’s smile against your skin.
“No, as a matter of fact, but feel free to express your gratitude sexually,” he rejoins.
You have to laugh in earnest at that. You wash your hands in the sink before you turn in his arms and take his face gently in your hands. You bring him down to you for a sweeter kiss than he expected.
“Thank you,” you whisper against his lips. “It’s nice, having someone who thinks about me.”
His brows furrow a bit at that. He didn’t think bringing you an unexpected meal would be all that impressive, but…he also knows how long you’ve been alone.
For reasons he can’t tell you, it makes a twinge of guilt hit him behind the ribs.
All throughout dinner, and afterwards, Alec is hooked on the familiar soap opera playing on the TV in the living room. You both are sitting on the couch, but you’re half watching him, amused by his reactions. He’s absolutely glued to an episode you’ve already seen.
“You’re even more obsessed than I am,” you tease.
Alec spares you a wan look. “I just wanna know whose baby it is.”
A teasing smile forms across your face as you shift onto your knees and lean over to him, as if whispering a secret in his ear.
“And it’s actually twins,” you tease.
His expression of enrapture shifts with a wry edge.
“Twins, huh?”
That seems to take him out of his enjoyment, somehow.
You frown a little. “You okay?”
“Always,” he responds, glancing at you. He visibly lightens up, pulling you into his lap with a muttered, Come ‘ere.
You giggle at his manhandling and oblige him with a few stolen kisses.
You feel bold enough to push him back to lie on the couch, and he actually lets you. His hands find your hips while you move to straddle his. Your fingertips drift down his chest as you consider him with a tilt of your head.
“Why haven’t I ever been to your place?” you ask. You draw an imaginary pattern across his chest, grazing him with your nails. His skin prickles under his clothes, but he stares up at you and shrugs without giving into your distraction.
“What, do you live above a strip club or something?” you add, smirking.
Alec’s expression matches yours as he squeezes your hips. “I like coming to you.”
Letting out a breath through your nose, you lean down and try plying him with slow, nipping kisses down his jawline, then his neck.
“Hmm, I still think you’re evading,” you say between kisses. “Tell me. Why haven’t you invited me back to your apartment?”
“Aren’t you getting demanding,” he teases back, even though his breath hitches when you nip a bit harder, just under his ear. Your deft hands run over his chest, toying with his senses. Already the scent of the soap you use has invaded his nose, like it always does. Jasmine.
“You knew this about me,” you say against his skin. He feels the movements of your lips like an added tease.
“Yeah,” he acknowledges. His smirk deepens. “Not gonna lie, I kinda like it.”
You smile. “So answer the question. Or do I have to punish you?”
Fuck, sweetheart, be my guest, Alec thinks. But he forces himself to focus on your words, reading between the lines of what you’re really fishing for.
“My place isn’t all that safe,” he says.
You snort. “Safe is relative in this city. Besides, I thought you said my apartment was questionable at best.”
“I said you needed better security.”
“You’re my security.”
Alec’s smirk returns at that. “Is that all I’m good for?”
“Better than a doorman,” you joke, leaning down to him again. “You deliver right to my door.”
“You think you’re so clever,” Alec says. Your lips find his in a kiss, and they lure him back into the pull of you. How easy it would be, just to let you “catch” him. Every night. Every day.
Your arms cage his head as you finally lay down on top of him, slowly rolling your hips against his. Both of you feel his hardness twitch against your thigh. You smirk against his lips.
“And right on time,” you quip.
“All right, that’s enough outta you,” Alec says, and he claims you with a more demanding kiss. His fingers sink into your hair tightly.
But you press your hand to his cheek, making him pause for a moment. The amusement fades from his eyes the longer he stares into yours. You’re not teasing or joking anymore.
You lower down and kiss him with meaning. With tenderness.
You don’t know how it makes that coil of guilt grip him like a vice.
“You’ve gotta be shitting me,” you mutter.
Your exasperation has reached an all-time high.
You’re really trying not to clock this bitch in the throat. When she grabs you by the hair, however, you have no choice.
Your punch lands squarely up the bridge of Marina’s nose with a crack that makes even Original Cindy wince.
You feel sick to your stomach.
Not just because your coworker and former friend Marina has stumbled to the floor, looking up at you with ire and a bloody nose. But because you just found out that you and Marina have somehow been dating the same man.
Alec had been standing off to the side with a semblance of concern behind his eyes (but mostly shock). You turn to him next, and he freezes. All the nearby Jam Pony employees watch the scene as you grasp Alec’s arm and warn him with only your eyes—it’s in his best interest to follow you to the lockers.
He acquiesces, even though his shifty eyes say he wants to bolt. Cindy’s shaking her head with a flat expression. Max is outright glaring at him. Sketchy is grinning, shoots him a thumbs up as the two of you pass by.
Alec heeds your unspoken demand, but he crosses his arms once you let go of him.
“Apparently, Marina claims you’re her boyfriend,” you accuse. You press two fingers into his chest. “Despite the fact that you’ve only been dating her for what, two weeks tops? A relief to me, since I thought we’d been dating for almost two months.”
Alec laughs nervously and rubs the back of his head. “Well, you know, we never did say that we were exclusive—”
“Did you sleep with her?” you ask.
He falters at the look on your face. So incredibly hurt, but still holding out a sliver of hope.
The longer he stays quiet, the more that too starts to dim.
You can’t help yourself. You slap him across the face.
Alec takes the hit, making it look like it actually hurt him in the way he snaps his face to the side. He’s more shocked than anything, though he knows he doesn’t have a right to be.
Your lower lip trembles, but you also gasp with a wince and hold your hand, because somehow his face felt like a slab of iron. Shit! Does he have a metal plate in his head or something?
Alec sighs. “You okay there?”
He reaches for your hand, but you back away from him.
“Don’t touch me. Never touch me again,” you say shakily, through tears.
You don’t want to admit that your heart is breaking. You fucking idiot. You should’ve known your instincts would be right about Alec McDowell.
You grab your clipboard and your forgotten backpack from the floor by your locker, and you walk away from him before your tears start to fall.
In the aftermath of the fight, Normal raises hell about the fact that Marina’s quitting. You can’t really give a shit, but you’re not about to follow suit. You’ve never, and will never let a man get between you and your money.
You take your deliveries for the morning and start on your route.
And if you have to park your bike in an alleyway to cry without the prying eyes of your coworkers, then that’s your right as a woman.
Alec hides it well, but inside, his chest aches the way his face should. He doesn’t altogether know or want to think about why.
So he worms his way into a delivery run with Max to distract himself (and to escape Jam Pony HQ). Max gives him hell, as expected, but he tries to ignore her and get this job over with so he can drink himself into a stupor at Crash tonight.
…Or try to. Getting drunk is a difficult feat with his genetics, not to mention a very expensive pastime.
Right now, he and Max are riding their bikes through the richey rich side of town, so at least it’s cleaner. Manicured hedges and tall gates surround every house here. It’s almost kind of familiar, though he’s too focused on following Max to care much.
“I mean, it’s not like I intended to date ‘em both at the same time,” he defends himself. “And then when it turned out I was dating them both at the same time, it’s not like I didn’t intend to tell both girls about the other one. …You know, eventually.”
It’s like the universe itself calls himself out on his lie when the front tire of his bike skids. He pulls to a sharp stop in front of an iron gate and falls over onto the asphalt, but his reflexes are quick, and he picks himself up with a forced spring in his step.
“But let’s be real for a moment, shall we?” he says. “I mean, suppose I did tell them. What would happen, huh? Same thing. Big fight. Lots of anger and resentment and recriminations, and then who wins? Nobody.”
Max continues to watch him with a deadpan frown. “Well, at least in this case, you won.”
“Exactly,” Alec smiles, though it doesn’t reach his eyes. His expression falls anyway. “Well, no. Seeing as though neither of them will be likely to speak to me, which makes any kind of sex a virtual impossibility…at least for a couple of days.”
Max rolls her eyes. “Clearly both of them lost their damn minds to even give you the time of day.”
Alec has a witty retort on the tip of his tongue, but it’s waylaid by a memory that used to make him smile. It now just settles heavily in his chest.
Two Months Ago...
Just then, the bartender slides you a beer you’ve already ordered. You thank him and give Alec a smile.
“Got it covered, thanks,” you reply, sipping the froth off your drink.
Alec sighs and crosses his arms. “When are you gonna stop putting the freeze on me?”
“When I’m not part of your internal checklist of Breasts on Legs,” you answer.
Alec scoffs and holds his chest.
“That’s hurtful,” he claims. “It really is.”
But he shifts toward you in his seat, cutting off your smile. You tense up and blush at his proximity, making his grin deepen.
Damn, she smells good, he thinks.
“Besides,” he says, “I always save the best for last.”
He knows he’s making you nervous in a good way. He can sense it, though you eye him wryly. He means to go in for the kill, but he’s thwarted when Original Cindy slides into the seat on your other side. She tosses you a wink, the way women do when they have their own unspoken language.
You then smirk in Alec’s face.
“Keep trying. Maybe someday I’ll lose my mind,” you say, with a teasing raise of brows.
He’s still amused as he shakes his head. “You’re unbelievable. Insulting, yet, still somehow endearing.”
He means it. Every time you turn him down, he’s genuinely disappointed.
But if you ever change your mind, he’ll be right here waiting.
That memory falters as Alec stares up at the familiar mansion. He just doesn’t remember that he’s been here before—not until he rings the doorbell. That sound dislodges a fragment in his mind.
One that makes him hide from the surveillance cameras on instinct. It has him throwing the package over the gate and grabbing Max to guide her away from the house before they’ve been able to get a signature.
And a name rings through all the clutter. A name that was once seared into his mind is wrenched open like a badly sewn wound.
Rachel.
You don’t see Alec for a few days. Which is good, because you’ve been avoiding him.
Until he finally shows up for work, and somehow, he looks off. He lacks the jovial, devil-may-care attitude he wears like a second skin.
He glances at you down the line at your locker, catching your gaze.
You still can’t bear it. You turn your head away, feeling like a coward. You hear his locker door slam loudly and he leaves without even getting his schedule from Normal.
You rest your head against the cool metal of your locker.
“Where the hell’re you going, mister!” Normal calls after his former favorite employee.
Despite your better judgment, you sigh and push away from your locker to face your boss.
“He’s got a stomach bug. Real nasty,” you call out.
Normal’s frown deepens, but his expression softens from his hardened edge.
“Oh. Well…that’s all he needed to say,” he sniffs. He hands what would’ve been Alec’s load of packages onto Sketchy, who gives him a flat look.
“Go, get to work. Bip, bip!” Normal points a finger at him, then dismissively at the door.
Sketchy rolls his eyes, but he makes sure to send you a “thankful” look before he heads out. You give him a sardonic smile. Serves him right for taking Alec’s side in this whole messy situation, like the man children they both are.
Original Cindy comes to your side and lightly bumps your hip. She’s a strong support as always, and you give her a small smile.
“Come on, boo. I’m buyin’ your drinks at Crash tonight,” she says. You loop your arm through hers.
“Thank God for you, OC,” you breathe, though with a smile that feels a little more like yourself.
“Ladies night, it is,” she snaps playfully.
And if that’s what tonight is, then you’re going to look good. No ratty jeans and boots meant for walking. After work, you dive into the depths of your closet and find an old favorite of yours: a black leather skirt and a lacey top, open-backed and a sweetheart neckline. You complete the look with a pair of heeled ankle boots and the only shade of red lipstick you own.
You just don’t count on Alec wanting a night out too.
He hangs out at Crash all the time. You can’t be surprised, you remind yourself, when you spot him at the bar. Except he doesn’t wear his usual suave confidence. No, he’s hunched over a glass of whiskey as he sits alone in front of the bartender. He doesn’t even notice you, Max, and Cindy as you guys claim your usual table in the back.
You can’t help it though. Your eyes keep drifting back to him.
Both Max and Cindy catch you, with something like sympathy on the latter’s face.
“I’ve never seen him like this before,” Cindy remarks. “Anguished, and all Heathcliff-like.”
She’s right, you think. He’s been like this for days.
Max seems to know him better than anyone. You turn to her in askance.
“This isn’t just because of…what happened, is it?” you say.
Max sighs and shakes her head. “No. I don’t think so.”
But she’s either unable, or unwilling to give you any more to go on.
…Goddamn it, you think, as you contemplate doing something stupid, like going over there to talk to him. You know you shouldn’t give him the time of day, but God help you, you still care about this asshole.
You heave a sigh. “I’ll be back in a few. And if not, I give you full permission to haul my ass out of this bar.”
“Don’t do it,” Cindy advises, with the tone of someone who knows you’re not going to listen.
You get up from the table and give your friends a placating hand. You roll your shoulders and force your feet to move—towards the bar.
The seat to Alec’s left is empty, and you take it. His gaze slides toward you, and he’s forced to do a double take. His familiar once-over has you almost smirking, but even that is missing something. It’s like something sucked the life right out of him.
He gives you a haphazard smile that doesn’t reach his eyes.
“Thought you weren’t talking to me,” he says.
“How many of those are you going to drink?” you ask, gesturing at the third glass of whiskey in his hand. He glances down at it, then at nothing as his gaze travels away from you.
“Until I can’t feel the burn anymore,” he replies. Even his voice isn’t like him, dull and wry.
You hesitate, but you surprise even yourself by offering an olive branch.
“Look, if you want to talk about what happened…or anything else—” you try, but he cuts you off.
“I’m sorry,” he says, finally looking at you again. “I should’ve made it clear from the beginning that I wasn’t looking for anything serious.”
Your heart plummets. Your mouth works past shock and fresh hurt. You fight the sting in your eyes as your mouth flattens.
“So, you and I were just casual,” you confirm. “None of it meant anything to you?”
He looks over at you and pins you there. There’s a glimmer of something behind the cool green of his eyes. Like maybe part of him wants to rebel and give you hope.
He stays quiet.
So with tears in your eyes, you close out your tab, and you leave the bar to go home. You can’t even bring yourself to look over at your friends. You’re too embarrassed.
Meanwhile, Alec focuses on the contents of his glass, even though he knows nothing will ever be enough to numb him.
Now that Manticore’s psychological reprogramming has crumbled, now that he remembers what happened two years ago—and what he did—nothing will make his fractured, bloody insides feel like nothing ever again.
Max and Original Cindy see the entire scene play out from across the bar. Cindy shakes her head with a hum of disappointment that black women have perfected.
Max’s answer is to get up, with much the same reluctance as you had, albeit for different reasons.
“I know I’m gonna regret this,” she sighs.
“Take your time,” Cindy says. She already has her flirtatious eye on another woman by the pool table.
Max smiles in amusement and leaves her friend to her business. She goes to her fellow transgenic and slips into the same seat you occupied moments before. Alec barely looks up at her.
“Call me crazy but I get the feeling you’re in some kind of jam,” she says. “More than just about your messy ex situation, though that was a nice cold shoulder you gave her.”
“Okay, you’re crazy,” he replies, raising his glass back to his lips.
Max presses her luck, asking about the locket Alec has always kept. At Manticore, he’d kept it in his shoe. He’d pull it out at night and try to remember why it was important, but he never could. All he knew was that it made him feel better, and he’d go to sleep easier.
Max saw it on him days ago. And now they both know it had belonged to Rachel Barrister, daughter of Robert Barrister. The man Alec was once sent to kill.
He’d both failed and succeeded.
“Curiosity killed the cat, Max,” Alec says snidely. “Stay out of my business.”
“Fine,” she says, but part of her still worries about him. And she worries about you. “Look, I know we don’t always get along—”
“Nicely understated,” he cuts, and sets down his glass a bit too hard on the counter. The bottom of it fractures. “Barkeep!”
“But if you’re in some kind of trouble and you need my help, then you should ask now, and not when it’s too late and everything’s all messed up, like you usually do,” she says.
“Well, I appreciate the offer, Max. I really do,” he says dryly, “but you don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Then explain it to me.”
“You know, I would, see, but…you wouldn’t understand,” Alec says. He points out that Max and the rest of her little X5 friends left Manticore (escaped) when they were kids. The truth is, she has no idea what he’s endured ever since.
Manticore cracked down on the next series of X5s like him, and every series afterwards—they all paid the price for what Manticore saw as the failure of Max’s unit. Lax training. Traitors. Deserters.
Alec didn’t see it at the time, not completely. He now knows just how deeply fucked up he was.
And is.
There’s no fixing it, like there’s no use trying to fix a broken toy.
So Max eventually walks away from him, just like you did. Just like he should have done for Rachel.
He knows he hurt you, but he also thinks it’s working out better this way. Better that you walk away from him, before he gets you hurt even worse.
It happens in stages, the way Alec’s memory unlocks.
It sorts through the psychological methods of torture and erasure Manticore used to try and scrape the Barrister assignment from his mind. Not only did it not work, but Manticore still won. No matter what he does, he can’t block out the pain or the rush of memories. He can’t not feel.
It’s a frustrating state of being for a soldier.
Alec’s laissez faire way of coasting through life after Manticore burned down was his version of stoicism, of surviving.
But if this is living, then he doesn’t want it.
That’s why he loses focus. He runs headlong into the trap his rational mind is warning him of—into that mansion, where Robert Barrister has led him with the torturous siren song of Rachel’s favorite piano sonata. The very same one he taught her, just two years ago.
Alec wants to rip the notes out of his head, but he still goes to the house.
Somehow, a fifty-five-year-old man gets the drop on Alec, a soldier. A transgenic.
Barrister knows who and what he is. He’s been in the game long enough against Manticore to know who he used to sell his products to, but he can’t quite pull the trigger on that gun, even though Alec goads him on. Shouting at him to do it. End his misery.
Rachel.
Max saves his ass again. It’s a frankly embarrassing number she’s racked up on that count, as she stuns Barrister and knocks him out before he can deliver the kill shot directly into Alec’s temporal lobe.
Alec doesn’t care.
He doesn’t care.
He doesn’t care, until Robert tells him where she is, upstairs in her room. Alec travels down the familiar corridor, and he sees her again.
Rachel. Oh God…
She’s wrapped up in wires because of him; in a coma, slowly dying for the past two years. She pulled her father from the car that was meant to explode and end his life. Rachel fell.
Alec sinks down into a chair beside her bed. For a moment all he can do is stare at her pale face.
Because of him. His job. His mission, that he couldn’t complete, because he tried to save her. It was too late, she paid the price, and it was all because of him.
Because he couldn’t fight the training drilled deep into his mind. He couldn’t fight his captors, not hard enough.
She paid the price.
Alec sits at her bedside for as long as he can. He slips her locket back into her cold hand. He holds her as close as he dares, and begs for forgiveness through near-silent tears.
“I didn’t understand,” he whispers brokenly. “I didn’t understand…how much I loved you.”
Alec attends Rachel’s funeral, a few weeks later. He stands almost a quarter of a mile away, but he can still hear the service. He goes to her grave, and he accepts the caustic words from her father.
“Never come back here,” Robert hisses. “I wanted to kill you. I hated you that much. But I’m still her father. I want her to be proud of me…and I don’t want to be like you.”
Alec silently accepts this. He knows what he is. Now, he knows what he’s done is unforgivable.
He also knows it’s time to let her go.
So he says a silent goodbye before he walks away from the grave and the cemetery. He intends to go home…
He doesn’t quite make it there.
Alec is forced to walk through a torrent of rain. He barely feels it beating down on his head, back, and shoulders.
Somehow, he ends up dripping wet at your apartment. His tall frame takes up your doorway when you open it to him.
This feels familiar, you think, as you take him in. Once again, you’re dressed in just your pajamas of choice: a loose shirt over a pair of shorts. Your hair is tossed into a bun.
You aren’t sure if it’s rain or tears dripping down his wet cheeks. His eyes are red enough to convince you of the latter.
“What’re you—”
“I’m sorry,” he says. His voice is a hint unsteady.
Your mouth falls open the slightest bit, but eventually, you sigh.
“Alec,” is all you can say. Go away, are words you can’t force past your lips, even if you have every right to say them.
“I’m sorry,” he repeats. “I uh…I don’t know why I’m here.”
“You don’t know?” you repeat, your eyes widening incredulously.
He shakes his head, but he aims to leave. This was a mistake, he thinks.
You don’t know what to make of him right now. Hasn’t he hurt you enough?
He seems different though. He looks like he’s one step shy of falling apart, and you’ve never seen such rawness in his eyes.
Something inside you breaks, and you grab his wet hand before he can escape down the hall. You’re persistent in leading him inside your apartment, where it’s warm. You offer him some dry clothes he left behind last month.
After he gets changed, he sits on your couch with you. His silence is so confusing, you’re not sure what to do.
“What’s wrong?” you ask.
“Me,” he says, chuckling humorlessly. “I’m what’s wrong. I uh…I should go.”
He gets to his feet, all twitching nervous energy, and again he tries to leave. You feel compelled to stand with him and follow him to the door.
“Wait,” you say, holding the door closed. Your hand lands on his arm, imploring with everything you have. “Alec, just tell me what the hell is going on. You’re scaring me.”
His eyes drag up your body, and slowly meet yours.
I didn’t understand…
Alec can’t help it; he raises a gentle hand to touch your cheek. You don’t deserve someone like him wrecking your life. He can’t be fixed, and he doesn’t want to break you too.
You hold his hand to your face. “Alec. Talk to me, please.”
In your face, he finds concern and the threat of tears, and his heart continues to hemorrhage.
There’s still room for you there. You’ve carved out a place in what’s left of it, without him realizing. He’s getting better at seeing the warning signs.
You let out a shaky breath. “Just tell me the truth. Are you in trouble? Are you here because you have nowhere else to go, or—”
“Honestly, yeah,” he finally admits.
You deflate in response. What the hell?!
Now you’re just about ready to push him out of your apartment and warn him that he better not come back. His grip on your arms stops you.
“This is the only place…” he continues, his jaw working. “Can’t seem to move my feet anywhere else.”
He means what he says, even if it’s not coming out right. After seeing Rachel’s prone body in her bed, coming back to face you is one of the hardest things he’s ever done. And yet, there's nowhere else he could go that felt right. He meets your eyes and notices the way you’re holding your breath.
“Uh, I kinda lied to you before,” he confesses. Your brows raise at that.
“When?” you challenge.
He licks his dry lips. “At the bar. Last time we met.”
“So when you said,” you struggle to articulate it, because just the thought of it still hurts. “What you and I had…that it didn’t mean anything…”
His hands slide down from your arms, to hold your hands in his.
“I was an idiot. I didn’t know what it meant,” Alec says. “I do now.”
Your eyes flood with tears as you let go of a heavy breath. Alec releases your hands to hold your face with shaking hands. In turn, you hold his wrists steady.
"You really hurt me, you know," you say. Your voice is a near whisper, but your words cut into him all the same.
"I know," he replies, as his thumbs caress your skin. "I'm sorry about that. About everything...which is why we probably shouldn't do this."
He really says that, even as his hands drift down to your neck, where he can feel your pulse beating and picking up speed. Alive.
“What?” you ask, with genuine confusion. You pull away from him a little, frowning up at him. "Then what are we doing right now? Either you want to be with me, or you don't, Alec."
His eyes meet yours.
You’re so real, so honest. Alec starts to think, to understand that this is what lured him in. It had him coming back to you every time you turned him down. It kept him coming back to you when you were his.
She can still be yours, he thinks. It’s a selfish thought, but here he is.
So he draws you in and kisses you deeply.
He doesn’t know how this can still feel right, even though his chest pulses with pain. But maybe, being with you is a different kind of pain. Maybe it’s not pain at all.
You asked him for the truth though. He can’t give you everything, but he can give you one piece of the puzzle; perhaps the only one that matters. He parts from you, opening his eyes to find your face. Your eyes are still closed, and when you open them, you start to blush.
It almost makes him smile, but his brain is still warring with his heart.
“I’ve only ever cared about one person in my life…and I lost her,” he says. “I’m not good at this.”
“How,” you ask, a bit hesitantly. “How did you lose her?”
His throat is tight. It’s all so fresh, he doesn’t even know how he gets out the words.
“She died,” he admits.
Your expression falls, and you shake your head.
“I’m sorry,” you reply, holding onto his shirt. “I’ve lost people too.”
He thumbs at your cheek. He sees your sympathy so clearly across your face, though he doesn’t know how you can still give that to him. It goes against everything he’s ever been taught, and everything he’s learned in order to survive.
He can’t help but let you back in, just like you’re about to do for him.
“It’s really this simple. If you want me to forgive you, if you really want to be here, with me, exclusively…then all you have to do is stay,” you say at last. Your lips press together for a moment. “But if you play me again, Alec, I swear to God—”
“No. No swearing’s necessary,” he says, and kisses you again. He’s surprised he’s able to smile, just a little, and he does so against your lips.
You break from him to grip his shirt and glare up at him. “You understand me?”
Alec’s smile deepens a fraction. He brushes your hair away from your face.
“Indeed, I do, Miss Ma’am.”
It takes you a beat, but you roll your eyes, despite a lingering blush.
“Ugh, don’t call me that.”
“Why not?” he starts to tease. “You seem to like giving out orders, I just thought you’d like a title change to go with it.”
You slap his chest half-heartedly. “Shut up.”
“See? More demands,” he quips. “I don’t know if I can work in this environment—”
You pull him down for a kiss to shut him up indefinitely.
And like it so often has, it leads into your room with the two of you falling haphazardly into your bed. He situates himself between your legs and traps you underneath him as he kisses a wet path up your neck. You arch against him and your hands dive under his shirt to help him wrench it off.
It’s all very fast, and a bit frantic until he has you naked underneath him.
His hand finds your cheek, touching softly, like he’s afraid to break you. There’s pain in his eyes that you’ve never seen before. Your brows furrow, though you caress a hand up the back his neck. He shudders when you unintentionally brush his barcode.
“Alec, what happened?” you ask.
He shakes his head. He wishes he could tell you. He wants to tell you…everything. It scares him, because he also wants to run out of here, putting as much distance between himself and you as possible.
But again, he’s selfish. This time, he understands why his heart is pulsing with both pain and longing when he stares into your eyes for too long.
“I can’t,” he says. “Not tonight… Can we just focus on the good part here?”
Despite yourself, you smile with a small huff. You take his face in your hands and bring him down to meet your searing kiss.
The good part, indeed.
AN: And here's an angsty Part 2! lol Let me know what you think! 💜
You might want to buckle up for where we're going next...
Next Time:
He takes one corner of your towel and peels it off you slowly, until your body is bare for his gaze. His eyes take in every inch of you before they make it back to your face.
He smiles, taking down the messy bun from your head to have your hair fanning wildly across his pillows. Your hands move across his chest and further down, but he puts a stop to your exploration. He grasps your wrists and pins them down to the bed with a strength you can’t escape.
You raise your brows. “Alec?”
“Trust me,” he says, dipping down to kiss your neck. “Let me take care of you tonight.”
You suck in a breath. Far be it from you to argue with that.
“Is this one of those sexual favors?” you tease. He laughs against your skin.
“You’re about to find out.”

Targaryen restoration au
Imagine if the following happened.
Rhaella lived through childbirth and got to take care of Dany and Viserys
Elia, Aegon and Rhaenys were able to escape to Dorne before the sacking of King's Landing
Arthur Dayne took a pregnant Lyanna to Starfall to find proper care to deliver Jon. But let's say in this au Rhaegar told Arthur the Prince that was promised must be named Daeron III
Jon Connington is called and returns to serve his lord's children
At some point they all link up and begin to plot to restore House Targaryen and take what is rightfully theirs. With Fire & Blood
With Rhaella, Ser Willem, Elia and Arthur around. Viserys never descends into madness and becomes more well adjusted.
Lyanna survived childbirth. Lyanna could not return home. She's too ashamed after her actions led to the deaths of Rickard and Brandon and she knows if she returns with her son, Robert would kill them. Arthur and Lyanna raised Daeron together. One thing led to another and they fell in love.
With outside forces preventing the crown from finding them(Doran, Varys and Illyrio) the Targaryens are never found.
Dany has a happy childhood and while they move every often, she has happy memories with her mother, brother and cousins.
With Rhaella, Doran, Oberyn Arthur and Jon Connington around, Aegon, Rhaenys, Viserys and Daenerys all grow up well versed into politics. Arthur and Oberyn properly turns Aegon, Daeron, Rhaenys, Dany and Viserys into warriors.
Because of Arthur's presence, he would not allow or tolerate Jorah Mormont.
With the vast wealth of Illyrio and Varys influence, an army of sell swords are at their disposal. They have the Golden Company, Windblown, Second Sons, Unsullied, and Storm Crows
With an alliance with Dorne, Aegon is betrothed to Arianne, House Tyrell are known Targaryen loyalists. Daeron is betrothed to Margaery and Daenerys is betrothed to Willas, The Targaryens could reach out to the Greyjoys and promise revenge and plunder. Viserys is betrothed to Asha.
I don't know if the dragons would factor into this au. Maybe there is a ritual, magic via the red priests/priestesses or something they found that could hatch the dragon eggs. If so the dragons are given to Rhaegar's children because prophecy. Aegon's Dragon will be named Visenya(Drogon) Rhaenys' dragon will be named Meria(Rhaegal) and Daeron's will be named Ghost(Viserion)
The War of the Five Kings turns into the War of Kings & Dragons.
Renly runs back to Stannis after he finds out the Tyrell's true allegiances. The brothers put behind their grievances and stand together.
When Cat goes to treat with Renly, she is surprised that Stannis and Renly stand together. They offer Robb a choice, join us. The Lannisters must be dealt with and then deal with the invading Targaryens.
Battle of the Blackwater ends with the Stark-Baratheon alliance victorious. Robb rescues Sansa and Joffrey is executed. Cersei is executed and Tommen is fostered at Casterly Rock by Tyrion. Tywin falls in battle.
Littlefinger is executed and Varys escapes in time to meet with the Targaryens.
The Targaryens arrive. They are met with Dorne, the Ironborn and the Reach.
All out war.
The Targaryens obviously win. But they are smart. They give their enemies the chance to bend the knee.
Then the Targaryens, Starks, and Baratheons unite their forces and marches North. to face their true enemy.
Aegon VI's small council
Hand of the King:Jon Connington
Grand Maester:Marwyn
Master of Whispers:Varys
Master of Laws:Oberyn Martell
Master of Ships:Mace Tyrell
Lord Commander of the Kingsguard:Arthur Dayne
Meanwhile I can see Euron return and hire a Faceless man to kill Willas Tyrell. Euron tries weasels his way into Dany's good graces. There are two ways we can play this. Dany sicks the Kingsguard to kill him or he slowly begins to corrupt her. Blame Viserys and cause Targaryen infighting. And after Viserys is out of the picture. Euron helps Dany take the throne and cement the Targaryens and the Greyjoys alliance through marriage, let the Long Night kill her cousins and they can rule the Iron Throne together and he has the means to bind the dragons to her will.
In the scenario where Dany stays loyal to her family. Euron is captured and is awaiting his execution. With no dragons to burn him. Dany has him executed by Wildfire. "Dracarys"
Ending 1:Rhaegar's prophecy is true and his children save the realm from the Long Night

I know this definitely isn’t a new concept, but what if the Greek demigods were Roman and vice versa?
How would Jason’s life, and his very self, be different if he wasn’t basically raised in the army, but in a comparatively chill camp? Not always having to prove himself, not having to always be perfectly behaved or else face horrific punishment. But also, how would he feel having the identity of “forbidden child” for his entire life? Not expected to be a powerful leader just because of his parentage, but always seen as a mistake and an omen of doom? Maybe he would still feel the need to always be perfect and special, just to make up for existing.
How would Jason and Hazel feel, all alone in their respective cabins? How would Frank feel, living with the Hermes kids, in a place where knowing your parent is even more important than at Camp Jupiter? Would Luke feel less abandoned at Camp Jupiter, where you’re not restricted by who your parent is?
Would Leo’s creativity and hyperactivity be stifled at the militaristic Camp Jupiter? Would he be utterly miserable? Maybe he’d gain renown as a master weaponsmith and onager maker, and be allowed to be a little strange and a little disobedient because of the creations he brings to the table. Or maybe he’d get sewn in a sack of weasels before the first week is over. It’s a toss-up.
What would it be like for Reyna, not having to deal with the responsibilities of leading the camp, but merely with looking after her cabin? Would Octavian be a less awful person if he didn’t have his position as augur and all the power going to his head?
Annabeth would be a Praetor, no question. What would that be like for her? What would Thalia think of Camp Jupiter? It doesn’t seem like her style. What would Camp Jupiter think of Percy and his sass and rulebreaking? Would he get the weasel sack? For sneaking off on quests he’s not part of, definitely, if not something else first.
I know I’ve considered the concept of Grover at Camp Jupiter already, but how different would he be if he had lived there with the other fauns his whole life? How different would his very personality be, growing up expected to amount to nothing? Would he still care so deeply about the Wild, or Pan, or his friends? What would he learn to be like?
What about Piper and Nico and Will and Tyson and everybody else???
I have no answers, only questions.

Overthinking: Welcome to Camp Nightmare
Welcome to Camp Nightmare is the 9th Goosebumps book in the classic series, released in the summer of 1993. It's also one of the first I read and an all-time favorite from my childhood. I remember seeing it at a grocery store (remember when grocery stores sold books?) and begging my mom to add it to the cart. I remember bringing it with me to read in the tent the first time I went to a sleepaway camp.
I also remember hating the ending.
Of all the books I've read so far for this Goosebumps re-read, this is one I was nervous about revisiting. What if it was disappointing after all this time? Well, I'm happy to report that I still really enjoyed this one...and maybe I'm warming up to the ending, after all.
First, the Plot:
We meet our narrator, Billy, on the bus to Camp Nightmoon, an all-boys summer camp (with a sister camp across the lake for the girls). The bus is filled with a bunch of rowdy, excited kids, including rough-housing Jay and Colin, the girls Dawn and Dory, and the nervous Mike.
The bus pulls off to a platform in the middle of nowhere and leaves the kids there, disembarking for parts unknown, and we're thrust immediately into action. A number of unusual, vicious-seeming weasel creatures approach the platform, and the kids are coming up with a plan to ward them off when help appears in the form of "Uncle Al," the camp leader, and his posse of counselors.
The girls are shipped away to their side of the lake, and the boys are assigned their bunks. Each cabin come with its own counselor, and Billy (who is bunking with Jay, Colin, and Mike) gets Larry, who's kind of a breezy disaffected douche from the moment we meet him.
Camp Nightmoon swiftly earns its name of Camp Nightmare, because bad things start happening as soon as they arrive. Mike's bed has snakes in it, which bite him before Billy is able to wrap them in a sheet and chuck them outside. Mike's hand swells, but he just has to put a bandaid on it and ignore it because there is no nurse on staff. There's a "forbidden bunk" that you're not supposed to approach, and some creature named Saber who lurks around outside. Kids are instructed what to do when a bear attacks, which apparently happens with alarming frequency.
During a game of "scratchball" (which is like baseball, but weird), Larry and Colin have a beef and Larry hits him with a hard pitch to the back of the head, which sends Colin reeling. Larry insists it was an accident, but Billy's not so sure.
Jay and a kid named Roger go to investigate the forbidden bunk, and Jay comes back screaming that some kind of creature came and ripped Roger apart. But nobody else seems to have heard or seen anything, and the counselors insist that there's no record of anyone named Roger ever being here.
Later, Mike and Colin also go missing, replaced with two new bunkmates, and nobody can explain to Billy where they've gone. He tries to call home but the phone is a fake prop phone. He discovers that the letters he wrote home are all sitting unopened and undelivered in a sack. And he even gets a frightened message from Dawn and Dory, who have snuck across the lake to tell him that bad things are happening in the girl's camp, too.
Before Billy can act on that info, though, he's sent on a special canoe trip with his new bunkmates and Larry...who falls overboard and has to be rescued. Billy drags him back ashore and they find their way home, but there's no sign of the missing new bunkmates, and Uncle Al doesn't seem overly concerned about finding them, though he IS mad about the lost canoe.
He's ALSO big mad about escaped campers from the girl's camp. Dawn and Dory have escaped and are hiding in the woods, and Uncle Al seeks to solve this problem by handing out (tranquilizer) guns to every boy in camp and instructing them to go hunt them down. This is the last straw for Billy, who refuses and turns his gun on Uncle Al. Al threatens him, but he holds firm, even pulling the trigger...
...and then Al starts to laugh, and congratulates him for passing the test.
People step out of the woods - all the missing campers. Everyone is smiling and congratulatory. Even Billy's parents show up! They are all so proud of him. Dazed, Billy asks what is going on, and it's revealed that his parents (who we already knew were scientists) are going on a very dangerous mission and wanted him to come with them, but first he had to pass a test at a government facility. So everything that's happened at camp has been a simulation designed to test him, all the campers are actors, and he's passed with flying colors! Good job, Billy.
One last question, though. Where are they headed?
Oh, just a very dangerous little planet called "earth"...
Overthinking It:
As Goosebumps twists go, the ending of Welcome to Camp Nightmare is honestly better telegraphed than most. He plays fair all the way through. You know from the first chapter that Billy's parents are scientists who go exploring. There are ample hints that the story doesn't take place on earth - the "yellow sky and red earth" in the opening paragraph, the weird weasel creatures, the mention of cities that don't exist, the existence of scratchball. You hear about "prairie cats" and "prairie wolves" and see trees with gray bark and a purple sky and you think, sure, Stine is just being poetic here. But no.
And it's honestly also pretty clear that it's all a setup. It's a little too convenient that Billy is at the center of EVERYTHING that happens, isn't it? It really shouldn't be all that shocking that this whole thing was a test.
And yet.
I don't remember whether this was my first rug-pull ending I encountered in a book. But I remember finding it achingly unfair. This book was setting up some REALLY scary, dangerous stuff with real stakes! Here was a book where somebody was RIPPED APART BY A MONSTER! But, no, none of it was real, and the betrayal of that stung as a reader, much as I suspect it must sting for poor, traumatized Billy.
Incidentally, Billy is a great protagonist. A lot of Goosebumps narrators are kind of passive (like in Let's Get Invisible) or actively kind of shitty people (like in The Girl Who Cried Monster) but Billy is proactive, heroic, kind, and just all-around a good person.
Which is, of course, the point.
Time and again he's confronted with challenges and proves his mettle. He takes a leadership role, protects his fellow campers, even puts his life on the line to rescue Larry despite Larry being shitty to him throughout the entire book. And then, of course, he stands up to Uncle Al, because Billy knows right from wrong.
R.L. Stine once famously joked that he wrote Goosebumps specifically to write kid's books with no moral message. And I think that is actually broadly true. But Welcome to Camp Nightmare actually does have some instructional value, I think. It's a book that teaches kids about bravery -- when to follow orders, and when to disobey them. More than that, it is ultimately a book about authority, and the moral imperative to stand up to corruption.
(yeah, I'm not surprised either that this was my favorite)
John Wolfe is actually currently doing a Goosebumps reread, and I really liked his analysis of Welcome to Camp Nightmare so I'll link that here.
John makes a great case for Welcome to Camp Nightmare as a study of toxic masculinity and I think he does it really well so I won't restate that case. But it's worth a watch.
What strikes me about Goosebumps as we proceed through the series is how often these books are about gaslighting. Which does make sense. Part of being a kid is having your experiences dismissed and disbelieved. And these books, time and again, do a great job of capturing the horror of being completely at the mercy of adults -- adults who are clueless, who are malevolent, who are secretly monsters.
Stine may not have wanted a moral message in his books, but "Adults might want to harm you, and you'll need to stand up to them to protect others" is a pretty damn good lesson to take to heart, even (especially?) 30 years later.
If You Liked This, THESE Will Really Give You Goosebumps:
The "we're not actually on earth" twist ending is, of course, one familiar to Twilight Zone fans, specifically the episode "Third From the Sun" based on a Richard Matheson story. The actual plot is quite different - it's about a world destroying itself with nuclear war before fleeing to a new planet (ie, earth) - but it's a classic.
John Wolfe made this recommendation first and I think he's spot on: M. Night Shyamalan's The Village has a ton in common with Camp Nightmare, from the twist ending to the monster manufactured to demand compliance from people who don't know what's going on.
Summer camp is, of course, a frequent setting for horror movies, thanks to the Friday the 13th franchise and Sleepaway Camp, which has the added bonus of also being a study of masculinity and untrustworthy adults....sort of.
Repeatedly while reading, I was reminded of Child's Play 3, wherein a teenage Andy goes to a military camp and must face-off against toxic authority figures while protecting younger campers from Chucky. This time, when you go to hunt your fellow campers with guns, you do so with live ammunition!
I'm struggling to think of more examples, but I'm sure there are some. If any of y'all have recommendations for other stuff to watch to cash in on the excellent Welcome to Camp Nightmare vibe, hit me int he comments/reblogs!

(warnings ahead for murder and implied, attempted assault, please take care of yourselves)
*.*.*
Rani grew up with neglectful parents and a little brother who was treated like he could do no wrong. While she was often tasked with looking after him, receiving the blame for any and all misbehavior, her brother was given pats on the head for being such a strong willed rascal.
It wasn't the easiest time growing up and as soon as she was able, she spent every minute out of the house, helping the miller with carrying sacks of flour, holding horses still for re-shoeing at the blacksmith's smithy and in the evenings she was wiping down tables in the tavern.
Any excuse to stay away and earn some money was pounced upon without hesitation. She was soon known around town as the girl who accepted any job so long as someone paid her for it.
No matter how rough and tough it was, she lifted her chin stubbornly and no matter how hard it became, she was determined to prove people wrong when they doubted her.
She learned who in town was corrupt and to be avoided, she learned who would attempt to exploit her and she learned how to recognize the glint in people's eyes that promised nothing but pain and misery on her end.
She learned just how hard she had to hit to take someone down, heart pounding with terror and adrenaline as she stood in a dark, damp alley. A stone smeared with blood was in her hand as she stared down at empty eyes.
She learned just how deep she had to dig a hole to ensure no wild animals dug the body back out, painful bruises blooming on her skin.
She learned fast and she learned well. Her hands grew rougher than any other girl's her age, she became stronger than many of the boys and she turned into a ruthless negotiator with a sharp intuition for those who wanted to trap her into agreements that demanded too much of her.
Her parents rarely saw her, but the few times they caught her sneaking back home, they were scolding her for being a terrible daughter who was never around and she ought to hand over some of her hard earned coin, they had housed and fed her for years after all.
Rani moved out of her childhood home as soon as she was old enough and the blacksmith flagged her down for an apprenticeship right away. It was hard work, but Rani was used to that and in the evenings she still went around, doing odd jobs for a bit of extra coin.
"I heard that unruly brother of yours got tangled with some unnatural folk," she heard her master say one day, almost half a year after having moved out of home.
They had some massive horses in today and they behaved well under her steady and reassuring hands. She had learned early on that animals liked it when she gave them a feeling of comfort and security, that they liked her calm and quiet words.
"I genuinely don't care," Rani answered, the black mare snorting and finally relaxing, lowering her head and her ears perked.
She was a sweet one, but a different blacksmith had once badly hurt her while shoeing her and now she got worried and scared easily. It was understandable, in Rani's opinion.
The blacksmith hummed, a low noise that seemed to rumble in his barrel chest. "No one's seen him in a week, people think he ran into the Blood Lords."
Her hands stilled for a moment. Everyone knew of the Blood Lords, of the monsters that called the cursed city beyond the forest their home. Endless rumors surrounded that place, one worse than the other. Anything and everything could be bartered away in that place, from souls to blood and even someone's own children.
The Blood Lords never left their cursed city and while some speculated it was because they couldn't, they didn't need to either. Not when there were people desperate or foolish or arrogant enough to seek them out anyway, thinking they could weasel out a deal in their favor.
Rani had always thought that even her hardheaded brother knew better than to tangle with creatures which knew neither pity nor compassion.
"He'll be back soon, I'm sure," she said, though a part of her was sinking like a stone headed for the bottom of a lake. "He's old enough to start adventuring away from town. He's probably trying to get to the king's city and he'll turn around when he realizes it's a bad idea."
The blacksmith hummed, low and sceptical and Rani felt just as doubtful of her own words. What if her brother had been stupid enough to go to the cursed city? A place shrouded in eternal fog and with the taste of death so prominent in the air it made all but the most foolhardy or desperate flee in terror.
At least, it was like that according to rumors.
Rani focused on her work, but once she was sent away by her master, instead of seeking out one of the people who usually needed an extra hand, she headed to her childhood home. It had been the first time since she had moved out that she had gone back.
She half expected her brother to pop out, scaring her half to death and laughing at her face and the angry but secretly relieved lecture she'd give him. She half expected the little shit to have been hiding somewhere, watching as people fretted and worried, giggling to himself.
What she found were her parents crying their eyes out. Even before they looked up and spotted her in the open door, their hopeful faces falling with disappointment upon seeing that it was her and not her brother, she knew the truth.
Her brother had, indeed, been stupid enough to tangle with the Blood Lords.
"You must save him," her mother began, tone half accusing and half an order, as though she blamed Rani for this situation.
Rani turned on her heel and strode away, angry and worried in equal measure. She had always ended up stuck with cleaning her brother's messes. Had always had to face the anger of anyone he had played a prank on, getting scolded and told to keep him in line, because her parents slipped away from their responsibilities whenever they could.
She was sick and tired of being dragged into their problems, into being blamed. Her parents were two perfectly healthy adults, they should handle this.
She stomped all the way home, to the tiny little apartment over a general goods store she had rented. She passed by the alley where she had fought that terrible man, the rock she had used still lying where she had dropped it. Any blood on it had long since gotten washed away.
No one had ever found out what had happened to that man.
She owed her brother nothing. In fact, she had told him multiple times to be more careful with his pranks and jokes, that one day he'd bite off more than he could chew. That he had sought out the Blood Lords was as laughable and nonsensical as a louse trying to tear out a wolf's throat. What had he been thinking?
She told herself that it was most likely already too late to save him. The Blood Lords took everything they wanted, they were considered even worse than the fae knights that rode through the forest during full moon nights, luring the prettiest lads and lasses out of their homes to whisk them away for forever.
The Blood Lords lived off of blood and souls and the screams of the anguished and tortured, their veins filled with dark magic and malice. According to rumors at least.
But there was always a kernel of truth to rumors, wasn't there?
Rani stared into her cramped little space, gritting her teeth, until an enraged snarl ripped free and she grabbed her cloak and shoved some things into her satchel before stomping out the door again.
