gotta admit, i'm not a fan of lois also being instantly into clark, i like when he's instantly into her but she's too career-focused to even pay him any attention, and is also a bit mean to him (but he likes it) (bonus points if there's a bit of a rivalry going on bc he keeps getting scoops and she can't figure out how)

i'm not saying i dislike this lois, but... she's a bit too quirky and immature... :/ i get that they're younger here than in most adaptations but i mean, smallville!lois was even younger and she's perfect

the animation on this series is really not that good with expression tbh, like, the voice actors are going hard and the character is just =[]

i wasn't huge on the art style bc i thought it was too anime-like but one thing you definitely can't say about anime is that it's not expressive, so it's feeling like a lose/lose situation over here lol

ok, final impression? it's cute, it's fun, most of the issues i have with it can be answered with "it's a children's cartoon". i'm glad a new generation of kids is being given a new superman series, which is the important thing here (and i mean, the cartoon that got me into superman was fucking krypto the superdog, so). can't wait to get my little cousins and nephews into it!!

the biggest disappointment is probably lois and clois, tbh. she might even eventually develop into a more accurate version of the character, but the get-together that they're going with is definitely not how i'd prefer (and the early-on identity-porn era is my favourite for them, so it's double the :/). but it's ok, there's tons of other adaptations and comics out there that do show them that way (and more on the horizon! here's hoping 'superman: legacy' delivers, the casting is already amazing so 🤞🏻)

anyway, i'm gonna be going through the eps kinda slowly bc i'm pretty busy, so it's definitely not gonna be like my usual half-a-season-in-one-sitting liveblogs (god i miss having vacations)

I kid you not when I say that evil or criminal gays are so so important in representation and some of yall just refuse to get that. The idea that a queer person needs to be perfect flawless and infallible or else they don't deserve to be represented is a legitimately disgusting mindset that perpetuates the idea that queers need to obey and blend in to exist in "normal" society.

Straight people have SO FUCKING MANY movies of evil heartless criminals, or heist romances, or romantic supervillains, etc etc. Like the amount of times I've heard "this villain was right actually" about the fucking Joker or some shit should win me an award with how I've put up with it for so long. If your first thought when you see people celebrating queer rep of villain characters is to say "but she's bad" or get super sarcastic and insulting about it, you need to reexamine some stuff.

January to April 2004. Fans of MY ADVENTURES WITH SUPERMAN would likely enjoy this poignant 2004 miniseries by Kurt Busiek and Stuart Immonen, about a young man named Clark Kent in a world very much like ours, where Superman is a familiar — and fictional — pop culture icon. Clark grows up the butt of many jokes, but when he's in high school, he discovers that he really does have powers like Superman's, something that has no precedent in his world outside of comic books.

If this premise sounds familiar, it's because it's a lot like the origin of the Earth-Prime Superboy, before he became a way for Geoff Johns to mock comics fans (and for DC to play out its institutional hostility toward Siegel and Shuster). In the pre-Crisis era, Earth-Prime, one of editor Julius Schwartz's little jokes, was supposed to be our world, where comics artists, writers, and editors transcribed the adventures of the real heroes of the other Earths. In the afterword to the trade paperback compilation of SECRET IDENTITY, Busiek admits that the similarities were wholly intentional, and that while he didn't mention it in his proposal (and DC didn't advertise it as such), this was essentially his extrapolation of that 1985 concept by Elliot S! Maggin, Curt Swan, and Al Williamson.

After moving to New York City in his '20s, this Clark becomes a reporter — though not for the Daily Planet — and meets a young woman named Lois Chaudhari. To my knowledge, this was the first time a counterpart of Lois Lane was presented as an Asian woman (although of course she's not precisely Lois Lane).

Throughout most of the story, Clark uses his powers only in secret, but he does make himself a Superman costume. Eventually, he feels compelled to come clean with Lois:

Like Busiek's ASTRO CITY, SECRET IDENTITY is a very introspective story, less interested in action (of which there's relatively little) than in emotion and small observations of life with superhuman abilities. If you're expecting bigger dramatic stakes, you may find the series underwhelming — there are no supervillains or alien invasions, just Clark's reflections on his life and family, from childhood to old age — and the fact that the story never reveals why Clark has powers may frustrate. However, its autumnal wistfulness is appealing if you're in the right frame of mind for it. Immonen's art is gorgeous, and I can't think of a better artist for this story, which straddles the line between a real-world environment and the "heroic realism" of the modern superhero genre.

Fourteen years later, Busiek tried to do a similar story with Batman, BATMAN: CREATURE OF THE NIGHT, with John Paul Leon, which doesn't work nearly as well, wallowing in some uncomfortable attitudes about mental illness and an inappropriate though deliberately ambiguous supernatural element. Leon's art is interesting, but the story leaves a sour taste, and it does not succeed (at all) in doing for Batman what SECRET IDENTITY does for Superman, which is disappointing.

If MAWS Superboy does somehow turn out to (disappointingly) be genetically Lois and Clark's can he at least be New52 Conner and be a clone of the Jon(Lois and Clark's son) that went evil in a possible future?

They'd still be able to pull a Future Trunks that way, and they could finally use that concept for New52 Conner's return from the dead where they brought together everything they learned from repeatedly putting him in a T-shirt to make one that actually looks rad.

So after that episode my adventure with superman. There's a lot debate surrounding the love interest of superhero finding out their identity some really hated it and some think the loved one deserve to know

What's frustrating about the discourse MAWS started about "superheroes being open to their love interest on their secret identity" is that it's an inherently disingenuous framing of what happened between Clark and Lois in MAWS.

Because what actually happened is "acquaintance discovers that a guy she met less than a week ago is Superman, and she's insulted he didn't disclose that to her sooner despite her claiming to want to dox Superman" It's been 5 days. They didn't even date yet!

The problem with framing this as just "being honest" to your loved ones about your "superhero identity" is that is leaves out the fact that there is a marginalized element to Superman's identity as an alien immigrant. There's a difference between Bruce Wayne telling someone he's Batman and Clark Kent coming out as an alien to someone he trusts.

MAWS pulls a direct parallel between Clark's marginalization as an alien to that of a gay couple, allegorically likening his experience to that of a closeted person. Under that lens, doesn't it make sense why Clark doesn't trust his friends?

Despite Jimmy apparently knowing Clark is an alien but not wanting to bring it up because it "seemed like a sensitive subject", he still outed Superman as an alien on his channel, did nothing when Lois proclaimed she wanted to "force Superman to tell us all his secrets", and handed Lois the tabloids that outed Clark to Lois. Neither he nor Lois created a safe environment for Clark to feel comfortable to come out to them.

And yet the narrative sides with the entitled allies' feelings. Lois lies to Clark and Jimmy on day 1 and nearly got them fired. She even keeps lying to Clark afterwards despite promising not to! Only to turn around and say she hates being lied to because of daddy issues. The hypocrisy of this is never called out. Jimmy isn't even a little understanding that his superhero friend would miss out on a camping trip because he's busy saving people! This is part of a common trend of Vilifying Closeted People, and Clark's arc fits it to a tee.

TLDR The discourse around this arc is so messy because MAWS presented it that way. The show only recognizes Clark is marginalized when they want to lightly touch on themes of xenophobia but completely ignore it when his friends are entitled to that part of him. It's a show that can't make up its mind.

I am once again tired of seeing Amanda Waller just being a one-note villain rather than a complicated tactician who is ruthless but still surrounds herself with a team who can question her and object. Anyway, everyone should read Ostrander’s Suicide Squad run.

I have to say it is wild as shit going from the Supergirl fandom where huge swathes of it insisted that Lena was super totally completely in the right for going full supervillain and trying to kill Kara and also mind-control the entire world because she kept being Supergirl a secret from her, to the MAWS fandom where people are insisting Lois is a total bitch for daring to be a little upset that Clark lied to her about being Superman even though she'd mentioned that she has issues with people, including her dad, lying to her in the past, and Clark keeps disappearing during dangerous situations, making her incredibly worried about him when this whole time, he was Superman.
