(review w spoilers under the cut)

- IT WAS SO UNAPOLOGETICALLY COMICBOOK-Y HOLY SHIT FINALLY SOME GOOD FUCKING FOOD!!!!!!!!!!! i mean i really did like the dceu a lot (well, most of it anyway)!! and, honestly, most of the time the tone didn't even really bother me, it never seemed like they were actively ashamed of having comics as the source material (like tdk so obviously was), just like their focus was telling these characters' stories through films. but this was another level!!!

like, the most obvious example is the "justice gang" fighting an interdimensional imp right outside clark's window and he just shrugging it off, but like. all of it. the way they talked so casually about certain things, without even lampshading how silly they sounded, it just feels like an established superhero universe in a way i don't think any live-action adaptation ever has??? and it's not just because they skipped the origin story (more on that later), because this has been the case with plenty films before (like literally all live-action batmans besides tdk) and none of them ever felt like this.

like, some of it did challenge my suspension of disbelief. the people's reaction to any news report were a bit too immediate and unanimous (and apparently the only dissonant voices before that were angry pocket universe monkeys, which i'm pretty sure is a jab at the website formerly known as twitter and its 75% bot activity so i'll let it slide). and i don't think a single civilian - or squirrel - was killed during the entire thing (which is hilariously contrasting to the last superman solo film), but that's the thing with adapting the marvel and dc comic universes: you can either be faithful or you can be realistic. this was basically the thesis of my final essay at university, where i argued animation was a much better medium for that (only partly due to this), and i think it's telling that james gunn envisioned the dcu as something where live-action and animated properties have an equal weight

- tangentially related, all the references to comic entities!!!!!!! big belly burger, chocos, the metropolis meteors, whatever the hell else!!!! and i remember the set photos from street shots had a bunch of small references in things like street names, i really wish dvd features were still a thing bc i'd eat up a behind-the-scenes video with the set designers talking about things like this

- THE CHARACTERISATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! EVERYONE WAS SO ABSURDLY GOOD OH MY GODDDDDD I NEED AN ENTIRE FUCKING TV SERIES SET IN THIS DAILY PLANET PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASEEEEEEEE or maybe we can just replace the maws writers with james gunn

jimmy was a bit weird but my friend was super excited about an aroace interpretation so he gets a pass

- and lex!! man i'm so glad my favourite big screen lex isn't kevin spacey anymore. he's an entitled whiny baby with a psychosexual obsession with superman, just as god intended! he reminds me so much of elon musk (except actually smart) and i need to know if this was intentional

- AND MR TERRIFIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i actually don't know anything about him tbh but OH MY GOD I LOVED HIM IN THIS FILM, HE'S SO GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- i need more lois though... like, don't get me wrong, her characterisation is SO GOOD, but i wish we'd gotten more action out of her, both physically and as a journalist. this isn't even about her not appearing much in the third act - because i get that writing the article itself is both the culmination of a reporter's hero work and also the most boring part (though i wish they'd have inserted a line about how jimmy should type the article bc lois would write everything wrong and they had no time for editing, i love my dyslexic queen </3) - but about the first two. what he saw of her doing the "investigative" part of investigative journalism was just casually connecting dots on her desk or begging superpowered people for help and then taking the backseat. she didn't even get to beat anyone up! mr terrific got all the action in that gotg-esque action shot while she was stuck in a hamster ball >:c

- which brings me to my biggest problem with this film... i know the whole intention was to throw us in the moving cart, which is an expression i just made up, but i'm not personally a fan. i'm ok with meeting a hero already late in their career (like dceu bruce, or cwverse clark, or spider-verse peter b parker), but i feel like if you're doing them early on you just got to show an origin story. sorry. i know this is an unpopular opinion nowadays, but i feel vindicated in it already by the fact that they tried to do this with spider-man in the mcu and then had to basically walk it back and do uncle ben's death but with aunt may three movies in

and i don't even necessarily mean the basic "dyin- wait. hold on.

that. the literal first page from the literal (according to james gunn) main comic that inspired this film. i don't even mean that bit, exactly because it's easy to tell with a quick montage. i mean things that are more unique to this particular universe - like the justice gang, krypto, kara, the glasses, lois finding out/being told...

my first instinct was to say the film felt too short for all that it wanted to introduce and explore, but i think the real problem was that it kind of looked like a sequel. like i walked in in the middle of a story, with the introduction part already done. there's so much about the characters, their history, and their relationships with each other that i feel like i'm missing out on. it even affected my emotional reaction to certain scenes... i honestly just couldn't get behind clark's relationships with the kents, and even the clois stuff had a huge help from how obsessed i already am with them and rachel/david's amazing chemistry. the interview/argument scene was great, but i really needed some more development for the actual romance y'know.

idk, it might just be a personal preference thing. i absolutely love origin stories, it's always my favourite part of any superhero adaptation. and i specifically adore superman's origin story. i once spent weeks just reading any comic retelling of his origin story that i could find (and i'd do it again!). and i already tend to have a hard time getting into ships when they're introduced as already being an item, but also i'm obsessed with pre-relationship clois. clark falling fast and hard, lois taking a while to warm up, the work rivalry, the identity porn and eventual reveal... my biggest grip with them in the dceu was always how they skipped this part, and it was what i was looking forward to the most in this version... i genuinely cried after finding out (via a james gunn interview) that they'd be together already. it's part of why it took me so long to go see the film :/ i hope it at least gets told in a tie-in comic or whatever, even if that takes the actors' chemistry out of the equation. honestly, any prequel type of thing they do for any character in this i would eat it up.

- speaking of disappointments though... i was SO excited after those photos of david in character as clark came out. i mean, you can see it in this very blog. i thought finally. finally they're taking the secret identity serious! finally they're showing people (again! *blows a kiss to the sky for christopher reeve*) that it's not just about him wearing glasses!! it's also about hair, clothing, posture, voice depth, speech patterns, body language, public narrative, societal attitude!!!!

and then it was just the glasses. they're hypnotic or whatever now. he barely even changes the way he talks as clark, if at all. 🍅🍅🍅 i have no idea why this particular bit is where they decided to pander to skeptical losers who unironically tweet things like "bruce wayne should just use his money to make gotham better" when the rest of the film does such a good job of steering very clear away from this vibe

- but anyway KRYPTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CUTE ADORABLE LOVELY BABY BOY, THE LITERAL CHARACTER WHO GOT ME INTO SUPERMAN, I LOVE YOU DEARLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! why the fuck is he kara's though. like, i know he's a companion of sorts to her in woman of tomorrow, but i don't think he was ever hers?? i'm pretty sure he's always been clark's dog???? and this is streaky erasure!!!!

- i'm really looking forward to see what they do to kara though. i've been very casually getting into her lately, so i'm at the point where i like the character enough to want to see more of her, but not enough to have super strong opinions on different takes yet (which is probably the best place to be). i'm REALLY into her dynamic with clark. she's definitely less fluffy than cw kara, which is much appreciated, but i don't think she's ever been a party girl? i do have such a weak spot for party girl characters though... and dogs... so even if i'm not sure about either of those things being applied to her, i'll probably enjoy the end product. i just need to not get too into the character in the meantime. though i do gotta read wot to see if anything bad happens to krypto in it

- and i'm hoping we get flashbacks in her film at least, because kara has a much less cemented (or wildly known) origin than clark does. and i need to know how tf did she have no idea about jor and lara's intentions (or maybe she did but didn't want to tell clark? maybe that's part of why she's drinking so much? how is her relationship to krypton? is she even from krypton or was she born in floating argo city? how long has she been on earth? how close are her and clark? who else does she know? does she have a secret identity? did she ever try to? etc etc)

- as for the plot twist itself... i don't think i really care about it? i think something similar was done in smallville, and i didn't enjoy how they handled it there, but it's not that clark's biological parents being dicks bothers me - i have no attachment to their characters, they're narrative devices more than anything. the important thing is how this affects clark, and in this film he got over it and didn't let it get to his head so it's whatever. it might have a lot of impact on kara's story, though, so we'll see.

i'm more interested in krypton as a jewish metaphor. with clark's origin being based on moses, it's theoretically a stand-in the land of the enslaved israelites - so a hopeless group of people whose suffering comes from forces beyond their control. in the context of how it was first written (as in, by jewish sons of immigrants, in the middle of ww2), it obviously makes sense to talk about the survivor of a doomed people trying to honour their memory. in today's context, however, it also makes sense to talk about the emotional conflict that comes when the cultural heritage that's always been so important to you gets tangled up with atrocities (intended to be) perpetuated by your people. i'm not super sure this was the intention, but considering the main plot, and the fact that james gunn has jewish heritage, i'm guessing it might be? if the language they were speaking was something based on hebrew i guess this would confirm it, but i'd probably have seen comments already if this was the case. i know they use esperanto in maws, so it might be something in that vein.

also. bradley cooper sure was a jumpscare.

- so hm. i guess this leads to the main plot. which is where my opinion might differ from a lot of the takes i've seen.

first of all, though, one must commend the courage of a man who, when tasked with making a critically acclaimed superman film that kickstarts a successful franchise, decides to go "hey what if we made something similar to what tanked the only time this ever happened?". because what i watched today, my friends. was superman iv but good.

i mean, superman abuses his power to interfere in an international conflict, then has to defeat a superpowered clone of his that lex created using a strand of his hair, and fight radiation poisoning in the process? ...i'm just saying

but anyway. said abuse of power. look, i appreciate the intention behind the film. it makes me so happy to not only see a superhero film be unabashedly political, but also be praised for it. it's very hard to happen when the usa military has such a huge influence on them. which i guess is why this film simply. does not address the usa military. in fact, the only usamerican combatants in this conflict seem to be the four metahumans. acting as rogue agents, bypassing any and all formal procedure or treaties, and just inserting themselves in the middle of a war that has nothing to do with them in order to spread freedom and democracy!! *bald eagle sounds*

i guess you could take it as a commentary on how desperate people will embrace any force who helps them when they're being completely demolished by a much more powerful invader, and how the blame for this lays on the invader, and not the desperate people. but i really don't think this was the intention. i mean, there was not a single named character from jarhanpur. there were no political leaders, no armed resistance (besides a few knives), nothing. just a bunch of people hanging around by the border crying for superman to help them, like perfect victims.

and when lois points out that it's fucked up for superman to not respect international law, she has a fucking point!! because sending armed troops to another country claiming your intent is to help liberate these people from oppression is literally what boravia was doing!!!! like, sure, we know the metahumans had actual good intentions, but 1. this doesn't translate to actually knowing how to best deal with the situation, and 2. this is how propaganda works. meanwhile, the only representation of usa political entities in all of this was the most ✨diverse✨ room in the entire film calmly telling this billionaire fella that he was sounding kinda shady as if he had some secret financial interest in this war and no way son, that's not how we do things here in the u.s. of a!! meanwhile, the real - and much more white and male - people running the usa government and most powerful private companies (which are basically the same thing) are very much funding the palestinian genocide for profit. and not even being discreet about it.

and god, don't even get me started on how boravia isn't a stand-in for israel at all and instead very clearly modelled after russia (specifically putin's russia. i mean, the horse painting??). which would all be fine and good - there are, after all, plenty of similarities between what's going on in palestine and in the ukraine, and mixing both conflicts into one in order to criticise them through fiction makes perfect sense - if it wasn't for the horrid penchant liberal usamericans have for blaming all of their problems on russia.

yes, putin is awful. i don't disagree with anyone who calls him a monster. no, this doesn't mean he's secretly pulling the strings of every evil asshole in washington, or even just the orange idiot in chief. sometimes you just need to accept that the call is coming from inside the house. maybe you're the baddies. fucking work on it.

i mean, looking at left-leaning usa discourse from the outside is fucking dire, sorry. there's barely anything to salvage in it. and i say this both as someone who considers herself center-left and not only speaking for myself, because this is openly discussed and basically universally agreed-upon in all the leftist brazilian spaces i frequent. usamerican exceptionalism and cold war propaganda have so deeply poisoned your brains that most you are completely disconnected from reality at this point. sorry. i'm sure there's some few sane people, but it's just so so far from mainstream discourse. safe to say i don't think james gunn is one of them.

but, as shallow and misguided as the political commentary in this film was, at least it was there. and it was a good film!

ok so, even beyond the visual, not super happy with how wanda and pietro were handled. felt very mcu-y. "these (white) teenage twins from a vaguely eastern europe location were experimented on and basically brainwashed to serve an evil organisation". at least it's not nazis this time around. and i know the 616 maximoffs also come from some fictional eastern europe-y location, but i highlighted this as a similarity to the mcu because, in both of them, it's the part that's made relevant as opposed to the fact that they belong to a persecuted racial minority. and in both of them they look a lot paler than their current mainverse model.

i'm giving deniz camp the benefit of the doubt irt the handling of their racial background, because i've misjudged his approach to social issues before, but the colouring is... not a good sign. i know he's not the one responsible for it, but i feel like if certain things were priorities for him it'd be harder for them to get lost along the way.

idk man, i feel like it could've been so much better if not for the fucking events. i know spencer said the last arc was actually the one he'd been wanting to write from the start, but i really feel like having to incorporate the specifics of the doom event really messed with it. and then there were a lot of things that look like loose ends (like the betting thing) that we'll never know if it would've been addressed bc the book is ending in order to be relaunched as another event's tie-in (as much as i might end up enjoying it). i also think spencer ran to fill it with as much of his interests and experiences as he could because he knew it'd be a short run, and it ended up just being too much to fit. maybe a more experienced writer could've done it in a more natural way, i kinda wish he'd had a co-writer here like he did in waller vs wildstorm (which, admittedly, i'm yet to read). i could see him handling well something like an origin story retelling, or an out-of-continuity thing (again, like wvw), but i think an ongoing iron man book crossovering with a huge event was a bit more than he could chew by himself this early in his career. but i hope he gets to write tony again in the future!

bc if the usa is gone (🙏🏻) and the american continent has been divided into "the north american union" and "the society of south america", one would assume at some point people would start using "north american" and "south american" instead of the older nationalities. so it's pretty weird that characters in this comic (and not just wakandans) keep using "american" to refer to (i assume) people from what used to be the usa.
